by Sherry Blevins Here’s to those who came before, Whose sweat and tears stain every floor, Floors where my feet also tread.
Here’s to dreams that started here, They thrived on hope and not on fear. That hope still echoes in these halls.
Here’s to those who paved the way, Who molded lives like molding clay, Who carried our dreams while they gently led, Who carried our dreams.
Here’s to those wanting more Who work even harder than before To find a future that started here, That started right here.
And their legacy will live In every brick and stone; And their legacy will be felt with every beating heart.
And our legacy will live In every brick and stone; And our legacy will be felt with every beating heart.
It will stand the test of time And remind us once again That one day the legacy will be our song.
It will stand the test of time And remind us once again That one day the legacy will be our song.
Composer's Notes It seems apropos that “Legacy” is in Tom Shelton’s choral series because both Tom and I studied music together at UNC-Greensboro and we both had the privilege of being taught and mentored by our dear choral professor, Dr. William Carroll. As many UNC-G students will attest, Dr. Carroll’s legacy lives on in the work he continues to do and in the work of his former students as we aspire to his greatness in our own work whether it is leading and conducting choirs, nurturing emerging composers, or ensuring that the world continues to be supplied with choral music of quality. We owe him a debt of gratitude. William P. Carroll served as Editor for Hinshaw Music for more than two decades, cultivating relationships with leading choral composers worldwide. With vast musical expertise, he has conducted workshops, led honor choirs, and served as an adjudicator. In 2001, he received the Lara Hoggard Award for his outstanding contributions to choral music in North Carolina. Carroll, now Editor Emeritus with the Fred Bock Publishing Group and Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro School of Music, previously held positions including Associate Dean and Director of Choral Activities during his 29-year tenure. He holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, along with degrees from Southern Methodist University and Millsaps College. — Sherry Blevins

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost (1874 - 1963)
Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year. He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.

Composer's Notes On January 1, 2019, CBS Evening News announced that Robert Frost’s poem Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening had become public domain and that it would now be available for anyone to use on t-shirts, coffee mugs, and for composers to set to music. I immediately went to the piano and wrote the last six measures of this piece, “and miles to go before I sleep,” then promptly put it away for a few months. The poem is iconic in American literature and always one of my favorites. Steve Hendrix of the Washington Post wrote “The poem, with its moody pondering of mortality, was born in a flash of inspiration midway through Frost’s life of professional acclaim and personal loss. In the summer of 1922, Frost was struggling with a long poem at his home in Vermont. He had been working all night in the kitchen, frustrated and thwarted. He crumpled up his efforts and went out onto the porch in time to see the first glow of dawn. Somehow, the sunrise of a dry summer morning evoked in his tired writer’s mind the evening of a snowy winter’s day. Almost a “hallucination,” he would say later. He turned back to his pen and one of the century’s great poems was born “without strain” in Frost’s words. In 20 minutes, he had drafted the whole thing. Extreme, shocking simplicity, that’s where Frost was at his greatest.” It wasn’t until late summer of that year that I finally went through my own struggles of setting this great poem to music, often wondering how to do it justice. My intentions were to create the scene in one’s mind of the snowy day, the horse shaking his harness bells, the gently falling snow, all culminating with the awe of the beauty of the forest and of the moment. Having that in mind, in preparation for performance, do not be afraid to interpret tempos, dynamics, and intensity with a great amount of flexibility! Rubato, dynamic contrast, tone differentiation, and emotional content are your friends here. Stretch them to their limits. Strive to create the image that Robert Frost so masterfully created. —Randy Jordan

Thou art my lute, by thee I sing,— My being is attuned to thee. Thou settest all my words a-wing, And meltest me to melody. Thou art my life, by thee I live, From thee proceed the joys I know; Sweetheart, thy hand has power to give The meed of love—the cup of woe. Thou art my love, by thee I lead My soul the paths of light along, From vale to vale, from mead to mead, And home it in the hills of song. My song, my soul, my life, my all, Why need I pray or make my plea, Since my petition cannot fall; For I’m already one with thee!
About the Composer: Richard Waters (b. 1973) is Director of Choral Activities, Voice Area Coordinator, and Professor of Music at Eastern Kentucky University, where he directs the university’s choral ensembles, teaches courses in conducting and choral literature, and oversees the graduate choral conducting program. Choirs under his direction have toured nationally and internationally, and have been invited to perform at several state and regional music conferences. In the fall of 2022, a member of the Brigham Young University Concert Choir died by suicide after a prolonged battle with mental illness. Shortly before his death, the young man authored a poem which forms the basis for this piece. His words ask the question: has God left us adrift and alone as we journey through this life? He then answers that query with the reassurance that just as God will provide for the sparrow, he will surely provide rest for us as well. “Find in Me Your Rest” is a musical setting of this beautiful poem, composed as an offering of hope for those who may be struggling with the weight of depression, anxiety, or other mental health challenges.
Find In Me Your Rest
(Original title: “His Eye Is on the Sparrow”) by Zachary Mongie, adapted by Brent Wells
Did God make woman, child, and man but didst not make them homes? Hens have their coops, sheep have their folds, are we then, left alone? Yet found within His Testaments the Lord himself declares: “the sparrow’s house, the swallow’s roost, her young she may keep there.” His voice is calm, a golden song; the voice I long to hear. Lo, from His mouth, a phrase flows out, so pure, so true, so clear: “For in that blessed day wherein you find in Me your rest, your brittle bones, your molting wings shall finally find their nest.” Copyright © 2025 Gentry Publications. Robert Frost (1874-1963)
Nature’s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf’s a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.
Composer's Notes I was one semester into my master’s degree at Texas Tech University when I wrote this piece, and because of that transitional period, composition took a back seat in my life. I had not written much if not anything at all that fall, so while I was traveling in Natchez, Mississippi for a singing gig, I worked on an extremely out of tune piano in the basement of a rectory during any moment of free time. It had recently reached freezing temperatures there and the trees were all barren, so I found Robert Frost's "Nothing Gold Can Stay" fitting for my surroundings. Frost’s short poem is about the transient and fleeting nature of life. Full of simpler textures and beautiful harmonies, the music brings about a somber mood and depicts this fading landscape. – Patrick Vu
About the Composer Patrick Vu (b. 1998) is a Vietnamese-American composer and conductor from Allen, Texas whose music has quickly gained attention across the United States. Patrick was awarded the 2023 ACDA Raymond Brock Prize for Student Composers for his piece “On the Hillside.” He has received commissions and performances from professional organizations including VocalEssence, Chor Leoni, Chorus Austin, Young New Yorkers’ Chorus, Fort Worth Opera, and more. While Patrick remains mostly self-published, his choral music is published by Gentry Publications, Hinshaw Music, Galaxy Music Corporation, Carl Fischer, Hal Leonard, and Alliance Music Publications. In 2022, Patrick graduated with a BM in Music Composition and a BME Vocal Music Education from Texas Christian University. In 2024, Patrick received his MM in Choral Conducting from Texas Tech University. Please visit patrickvu.com for more information!

Cool is the wind, for the summer is waning, Who's for the road?
Sun-flecked and soft, where the dead leaves are raining, Who's for the road?
Knapsack and alpenstock press hand and shoulder, Prick of the brier and roll of the boulder;
This be your lot till the season grow older; Who's for the road?
Up and away in the hush of the morning, Who's for the road?
Vagabond he, all conventions a-scorning, Who's for the road?
Music of warblers so merrily singing,
Draughts from the rill from the roadside up-springing, Nectar of grapes from the vines lowly swinging, These on the road.
Now every house is a hut or a hovel, Come to the road:
Mankind and moles in the dark love to grovel, But to the road.
Throw off the loads that are bending you double; Love is for life, only labor is trouble;
Truce to the town, whose best gift is a bubble: Come to the road!

Love Came Down at Christmas by Christina Georgina Rossetti (1885) Love came down at Christmas, Love all lovely, Love Divine, Love was born at Christmas, Star and Angels gave the sign.
For promotional or clinic purposes only. Performing or copying from this book is prohibited by law.
Worship we the Godhead, Love Incarnate, Love Divine, Worship we our Jesus, But wherewith for sacred sign? Love shall be our token, Love be yours and love be mine, Love to God and others, Love for plea and gift and sign.
Composer's Notes In this composition, the angels offer worship and praise through simple Korean phrases that float over Rosetti’s poem: Ososeo Immanuel (Come, Emmanuel) Young-gwang, Young-gwang (Glory, Glory) Sarangui wang naui Yesu, ososeo (King of Love, Jesus, Come). These angels sing and chant endlessly to welcome the King of Love. The choral introduction and recurring musical motifs in this anthem evoke the sound of snowfall, symbolizing the quiet, humble arrival of King Jesus into our human world as a baby in a manger. — Mina Choi

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in my heart) i am never without it (anywhere i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done by only me is your doing, my darling) i fear no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true) and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant and whatever a sun will always sing is you here is the deepest secret nobody knows (here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows higher than soul can hope or mind can hide) and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart) About the Work It is a special occasion when I am able to create a new work for a friend and colleague. Carolyn Minear was a good friend, mentor and champion for everyone she came into contact with in her role as Fine Arts Supervisor for the Orange County (FL) public schools. These words of e. e. cummings seemed the perfect way for us to express our affection for her. e. e. cummings wrote in an unique poetic language with unconventional use of punctuation, syntax and typography. It is evocative, enigmatic, playful, quirky, and profound in its direct simplicity. The words of this poem are intimate, full of delight and wonder, a softly whispered affirmation of love. About the Composer David L. Brunner, professor emeritus at the University of Central Florida, is a well-known conductor and composer whose expertise embraces singers of all ages, from young singers and emerging choirs to university, community and professional choruses. He has appeared as conductor, composer, workshop clinician, conference presenter and adjudicator in thirty-four U.S. states, Canada, the UK, Europe, Japan and Australia. An ASCAP award-winning composer annually for twenty-five years, David Brunner is one of a prestigious group of American composers named the Raymond W. Brock Commissioned Composer by the American Choral Directors Association, their highest honor for American composers. The New York Times has noted him as a “prolific choral writer whose name figures prominently on national repertory lists," his work having been performed and recorded worldwide. His writing styles range from harmonically rich and lyrical to bold and asymmetrically rhythmic. In each instance, he is committed to texts that resonate and connect with singers and audiences of all ages. Boosey & Hawkes, Walton Music and Hinshaw Music have published over one hundred twenty of his works. A complete resource of David Brunner’s music can be found at davidbrunner.com. 105

About the Piece Langston Hughes’ poem “In Time of Silver Rain” was featured in the 1947 collection of Fields of Wonder poems. With everything happening in our world today, this poem portrays an optimistic outlook on life. Although there is no consensus on the meaning of “silver rain,” here it represents the idea that, as in life, something good can come from both gentle and heavy rain. It also symbolizes winter’s end and spring rain’s arrival. For all who are navigating the ups and downs of life in every season, take comfort in knowing that spring will come, bringing new beginnings.

André J. Thomas, composer Other settings by the composer of other Langston Hughes poems include: Hold Fast to Dreams (Hinshaw Music) and I Dream a World (Heritage Music).
In Time of Silver Rain (1947) In time of silver rain, the earth puts forth new life again, green grasses grow, and flowers lift their heads, and over, all the plain, the wonder spreads Of Life, Of Life, Of life! In time of silver rain, the butterflies lift silken wings to catch a rainbow cry, and trees put forth new leaves to sing in joy beneath the sky as down the roadway passing boys and girls go singing, too, in time of silver rain when spring and life are new.

In measures 56 - 69, singers divide into 5 equal groups. Singers begin their part in a whisper and gradually crescendo towards meaure 70. As singers crescendo, they gradually add more body to the sound. The more chilling and creepy sounding, the better - brew the cauldron until it bubbles over at measure 70. (Singers may also add stomps, claps, snaps, howls, screeches, and other noises to the tempest.)
