Since the founding of our company, Halbach Medical has been closely involved in the recording of electrocardiograms. Initially as a supplier of ECG recording paper, and for several years now also as a supplier of ECG electrodes.
We understand better than anyone how important proper registration is and how crucial the accurate recording of the heart’s electrical activity can be. The signal must be as clear as possible and free from artefacts. After all, it provides essential information about the condition of the heart and plays a vital role in patient monitoring and in establishing an accurate diagnosis.

Whether for short- or long -term monitoring, stress testing, 24 -hour ECG recording, or use in an MRI environment, we always provide the appropriate electrode. They are produced exclusively for us and our German parent company under the brand name Clinical. What is the difference between ECG monitoring and a diagnostic ECG?
During ECG monitoring, heart rhythms are continuously displayed on a screen or monitor. This is used for surveillance, for example during a surgical procedure. Monitoring can be requested in the emergency department, in the operating room, in the ICU, or during hemodynamic or imaging procedures (such as MRI).
A diagnostic ECG is usually performed on an outpatient basis in the cardiology department and may include a resting ECG, an exercise ECG, and/or a longterm ECG. The ECG signal can be observed on a screen, printed out, saved and audio-recorded. It is a detailed measurement of the heart rhythm that allows the physician to assess the condition and function of the heart and make a diagnosis. A resting ECG can also be performed in the emergency department, the ICU, or before a surgical procedure.
What is the difference between ECG electrodes with solid and liquid (“wet”) gel?
Electrodes with liquid gel wet the skin, contain a lot of water and immediately reduce the skin resistance. They are recommended for diagnostic ECG purposes. Although the skin should be well prepared in order to achieve the best ECG curves, in most cases little or no preparation of the skin is sufficient with liquid gel electrodes.

Solid gel electrodes are often used because they are easy to apply, do not moisten the skin and leave no residue when removed. They are typically used for monitoring porposes. However, with solid gel electrodes, it is important to prepare the skin properly to ensure optimal signal quality.
What is the best way to prepare the patient’s skin before applying the electrodes?
1.The area where the electrode will be placed must be clean, dry, and free of skin oils so the electrode can adhere properly to the skin.
2.If necessary, excess hair should be removed by shaving the area. 3.The best signal quality is achieved by lightly abrading the skin before applying the electrode. Special abrasion pads are available for this purpose.
Why are there so many different types of electrodes, and how do I choose the right electrode for the specific application?
Various ECG electrodes are available to optimize signal quality, patient care, and ease of use. ECG electrodes should be selected carefully, taking the following criteria into account for each clinical application:
1.Electrode size:
Extra-small electrodes are available for babies and children. Sizes for adults vary and depend, among other factors, on the number of electrodes used during the procedure and their adhesive strength.
2.Carrier material:
For most ECG examinations, electrodes with a foam backing are used. For long-term studies, a backing material made of breathable, microporous fabric may be required.
3.Gel type:
Solid gel is usually used for monitoring, while liquid gel is often preferred for diagnostic procedures.
4.Type of connection:
Many ECG electrodes have a stud connector, but Clinical also offers electrodes with other common connector types, for example for a 4 mm banana plug connection.
5.Shelf life:
Solid gel electrodes generally have a shelf life of two years, while liquid gel electrodes have a shorter shelf life, sometimes only eighteen months.

Why are there different types of connectors?
Clinical ECG electrodes must be compatible with different models of ECG devices and help optimize procedures. Therefore, there are electrodes with stainless steel stud connectors (for monitoring), carbon stud connectors (for monitoring during X-ray procedures and MRI), and 4 mm banana plugs (for resting ECGs).
Can Clinical ECG electrodes be used during X-ray examinations?
Yes. This is possible when using electrodes that are specifically designed to be radiolucent, allowing them to be used during X-ray or MRI examinations.
How can I prevent the gel from drying out before the electrodes are used?
The electrodes should ideally be kept in their packaging until the moment of use to prevent the gel from drying out. Once the package has been opened, it can be resealed using the zip closure.

What are the advantages of repositionable electrodes?
Repositionable electrodes can be used for all monitoring applications and for all types of patients. This type of electrode can be repositioned and used multiple times on the same patient. They feature a soft, conductive adhesive surface and are ideal for patients with very sensitive skin.
How do I use each of the Clinical ECG electrodes?
Follow the instructions provided on each ECG electrode package. These contain all information about use, safety guidelines, precautions, duration of use, storage, and the proper method of removal.
Which advantages do disposable ECG electrodes offer compared to reusable solutions?
Disposable electrodes are hygienic and help prevent cross-contamination and hospital-acquired infections. They adhere well to the skin, ensuring an optimal signal. As with reusable electrodes, additional contact agents are no longer required.
