The study of languages is a key element of a well-rounded education in our globalised society, especially in today’s world where multilingualism is the norm. Languages can extend students’ ability to communicate and strengthen their understanding of the nature of language, culture, and the processes of communication.
Students taking Chinese (Background) or Chinese (Non-background) will need to have successfully completed studies of the same subject in Pre-Senior or have approval from the Head of Chinese.
The Background course prepares students for VCE Chinese Second Language and Second Language Advanced. The Non-background course prepares students for VCE Chinese Language, Culture and Society.

Assessment
Students complete a range of speaking and writing outcomes, and listening & reading tests throughout each semester. There will also be an oral and written examination at the end of the academic year.
