Data Analytics

Subject Guide

Data is fast becoming the commodity of the 21st century. Organisations of all sizes collect vast amounts of data about their customers and business operations. Students develop skills in collecting, analysing, manipulating and interpreting data. They embark on a large, studentdriven project to investigate a research question of their choice and present their findings as an infographic or dynamic data visualisation. These skills prepare students for dealing with complex data and communicating their findings to a target audience.

Data Analytics provides students with the opportunity to engage with data and develop skills in identifying patterns and trends that can unlock hidden potential and make businesses ‘smarter’. Students will further enhance their skills in collecting, analysing, manipulating and interpreting data. Students use the skills they have developed in analysing data to answer a research question and present their findings visually.

Unit focus areas Pre-requisites

Unit 3 - Data analysis and design

This area of study focuses on building fundamental skills in using software to extract data from large repositories, manipulating the data to reveal patterns and trends, and presenting the findings through a visualisation. Students explore principles of design to assist them in creating visual representations of the data that are simple, logical and easy to understand. Students frame a research question and embark on a real-world project to investigate the question and use design theory to communicate their findings.

Unit 4 - Development, evaluation and cybersecurity

This area of study provides students with an opportunity to complete their real-world project by utilising creativity and innovation to build an infographic or dynamic data visualisation.

Students explore the issue of cybersecurity and examine the types of threats faced by data-driven organisations in a globally connected world.

Data Analytics Units 3 and 4 is open to Years 10, 11 and 12 students.

Students can study Data Analytics Units 3 and 4 without having completed Applied Computing Units 1 and 2.

Note: VCE Data Analytics is running in online mode only, subject to numbers. This subject is not available to Pangea students.
