2017 Sudbury Memory Walk In October 2016 One Hundred and Fifty Two walkers of all ages stepped out in memory of all of the families living with or having lost someone with dementia and we are delighted to report that since the 2017 event was launched we have already had 45 sign up to join us this year. The walk will take place on Saturday 7th October 2017 starting and finishing at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre, Sudbury. This year’s walk is dedicated to Kate who sadly died just two week before last year’s walk. Tracey Loynds, Chief Executive for South Suffolk Leisure says “we are proud to be working to become a dementia friendly business and working with Jerry on the Sudbury Memory Walk has been so rewarding. Care UK and Babergh District Council have played a huge part in making both this year and last year a huge success.” Jerry and the team invite you all to join them on this year’s walk. A new ½ mile distance has been added to this year’s walk to encourage families living with dementia to join the walk with their loved ones. There will be seats along the route to take a well-earned rest and a rest station at the 1/4mile turn around point. The other routes will be 1mile, 3 miles and 5 miles. Vintage cars and other vehicles proved a big attraction as Newton Green Golf Club celebrated its 110th birthday in style. Members and guests turned out on a sunny afternoon to enjoy the sight of rare vehicles all owned by members and their friends. Although not the oldest vehicle on display, the 1934 Austin taxi which for decades was used to transport Sudburians – along with Royalty and Winston Churchill – to important engagements, proved a popular attraction. The vehicle, which is still in the ownership of its original family, has 522,523 miles on its milometer, and golfer Di Cunningham won £50 as the person closest to guessing the reading. With music from the Victory Jazz Band, a display of golf memorabilia and cream teas, the day provided a splendid opening to the club’s annual golf week.

This Time.....A Quilt Show with a Twist! Eighteen years ago, I opened a class for patchwork and quilting. Every two years since, we have held an exhibition in aid of the Essex Air Ambulance to show the beautiful work that the members have produced. The classes have gone from strength to strength and this October will be our eighth show! This time, alongside our own work, we are diversifying and opening our doors to other skilled artisans in a variety of beautiful handmade decorative arts which will make the exhibition even more exciting than ever! There will be displays and demonstrations in wood carving, pottery, journal making, miniature painting, and so much more! Venture Quilters will of course be displaying their fabulous work and since our last exhibition we have been making some new textile items which I am really looking forward to showing for the first time. There will be a craft stall and our favourite fabric shop, And Sew On Fabrics are joining us again this year. A workshop will take place throughout the exhibition to try out some amazing pens which Vedulka from Iveren is bringing. These will also be for sale. There comes a time when all good things come to an end and I have decided that this will be my last exhibition although the classes will continue, probably until they carry me out! In the meantime, we are pulling out all the stops to make this the biggest and best.....and there will be tea and cake! The show will take place at Venture Centre, Lawford CO11 2JE on Saturday 7th October 1 - 5pm and 8th October 2017 10 - 4pm Admission is £2 with accompanied children’s entrance free.

Country Threads Workshop Keeping a charity shop stocked with hand crafted gifts is quite a commitment but one the Country Threads craft group takes very seriously. In addition to their light-hearted Wednesday get togethers in the URC room, organisers Mavis Gordon and Lin Slaughter, also arrange several Saturday workshops throughout the year. These craft sessions are dedicated to making eyecatching items for the Day Centre shop at the St Elizabeth Hospice which is part of their Made with Love Project. The most recent workshop yielded a collection of unusual gifts which were so attractive it will be hard for anyone visiting the Hospice Shop to resist. Mavis and Lin will personally deliver the goodies as this gives them an opportunity to meet some of the Project’s volunteers and find out for future workshops which items are in demand. Have you spare time on your hands? Are you a little lonely? Do you want to meet people and chat? Perhaps you would like to be part of a team and make new friends, have new experiences, learn something new. What about working in a wonderful environment, surrounded by beautiful furniture, fine paintings and friendly people. If this appeals then you are just the person we are looking for to join the Room Guide volunteers at the National Trust property Melford Hall, Long Melford. Melford Hall is a beautiful country residence, with an eclectic mix of styles. It has history, trials and tribulations in bucket loads. What better place to spend a few hours a week. We are looking for more Room Guide volunteers to join our current team. We open from Wednesday to Sunday, plus Bank Holidays, from 1.00pm – 5.00pm, from late March to the end of October. It will involve talking to our visitors, eventually answering their questions and sharing the stories surrounding the house. Each week you will be in a different room so there is plenty of variety. Don’t worry you will not be thrown in the deep end, as as much help and guidance is given as you wish. Although a National Trust property you do not need to be a member to join our volunteers, and claims for travelling expenses are covered. So perhaps you love art, or history, or an appreciation of fine antiques, or keen on ensuring our heritage properties are maintained for future generations, whatever, you will find it a fun way to while away a few hours. Your support will be adding to the enjoyment of our visitors who are from all over the country as well as many from abroad. Our team are friendly and welcoming, of all ages and backgrounds, so why not come along and meet them. We are having an Open Day on Monday 11th September from 10.00am-3.00pm, with introductory talks on the hour. If it appeals, who knows you could be joining them very soon. We certainly hope so. We’ll get by with a little help from our friends We may have just finished the summer holidays, but our thoughts are already turning to a magical Christmas organised by The Christmas Present Trust. Now in its third year, the trust offers a full traditional dinner and afternoon’s entertainment on Christmas Day for those who, for whatever reason, are unable to be with family or friends. In addition to the TSB, who have adopted the scheme as a local organisation worthy of support, we also have the backing of The George pub, The Co-op, Adnams, Morrisons and Hadleigh Maid. Because we know we can cover the catering thanks to the generous support of these local businesses, we are now focusing our attention on specifics to make the day go with a real swing. Our first aim is to widen the publicity for the event. It is important to reiterate that The Christmas Present Trust is not affiliated to any religious, political, charitable or cultural organization. However, we are indebted to local media, especially the amazing team at Hadleigh Community News. This year we are trying to reach out to the local villages around Hadleigh to ensure all those who would benefit from the event are aware of what is going on. The best way to do this is through word of mouth, and this is where you come in. Please can you pass the word about to friends, organisations and clubs, or get in touch with us if you know of someone who may benefit. No questions are asked, no assumptions drawn. In addition to this, we want to ensure that all those who wish to celebrate with us on Christmas Day are able to do so regardless of mobility. To this end, we are inviting any volunteers who may able to assist with transporting guests to and/or from the event to get in touch. We may also have funds available to hire community transport and private vehicles. Please do contact us if you think you may be able to help. Our third aim for this year is to ensure that our guests and our volunteers have a wonderful afternoon of festive fun. We have been fortunate enough in the past to have highly accomplished musicians, and last year we had VIP Balloons to provide seasonal cheer. If you can sing, play an instrument, provide comedy, magic or indeed any other form of suitable entertainment, and you are willing to give an hour or more of your time over the Christmas period, we would love to hear from you. If you want to volunteer we need helpers on Christmas Eve to decorate the new look Ansell Centre, on Christmas Day to greet, serve and chat with our guests and on Boxing Day to clear up. Should you wish to make a financial donation these can be accepted by the lovely people at the Hadleigh branch of the Ipswich Building Society. However, without guests the event is pointless, so do get in touch if you or someone you know wants an invitation. Sudbury to the Sea (S2C)
Sudbury to the Sea (most commonly referred to as S2C) is a very popular event that takes place this year on Saturday 9th & Sunday 10th September 2017. The event is limited to 300 craft and we are now taking bookings (£20 entry fee per craft). Participants navigate the 24½ miles (37km) of the River Stour, from Sudbury to the Cattawade Barrier, enjoying its many delights and seeing parts of the local countryside that are inaccessible by foot or road. All craft navigating the river and taking part in S2C must be registered to do so and all participants will be expected to abide by the rules of S2C. Experienced and novice paddlers travel from all over the UK (and sometimes further afar!) to take part. The River Stour Trust provides help and advice along the route, a safety boat following all craft, and checkpoints at various points along the navigation. Participants must provide their own craft, personal safety equipment, transport at either end of the event, accommodation for the Saturday night (a camp-site at the midway stage), and food and drink. However, there will be some food and drink available at various places along the route. Proceeds of the event go to the River Stour Trust, a registered charity (No. 257806), seeking to restore and conserve the River Stour Navigation for the benefit of all. Paediatric Physiotherapist Ruth Dunstone joins the Hadleigh Physiotherapy team We are very excited to introduce our newest member of the team, Paediatric Specialist Physiotherapist, Ruth Dunstone BSc (hons) MCSP. A children’s physiotherapist specialises in treating children from birth up to the age of 18 and has additional knowledge of childhood diseases with the expertise to assess and devise management programs suitable for varying stages of development. Ruth is HCPC registered and is an active member of the Association of Paediatric Chartered Physiotherapists (APCP). Whilst she has a keen interest in the early years and neurological conditions, she has a wide breadth of experience across the field of paediatrics. Ruth qualified from Glasgow Caledonian University in 2008 and has specialised in Children's Physiotherapy since then. Initially, working for Capability Scotland, a charity supporting children with complex needs, she worked under fully certified Bobath therapists and she herself completed the introductory course. She further trained in paediatric splinting, manual handling, hydrotherapy and rebound therapy. Whilst working for the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow with the respiratory and neurology teams, she gained a huge amount of experience rehabilitating children with conditions such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, cardiac and neurological complaints. Whilst living in Gibraltar she gained further experience and expertise treating children with musculoskeletal, sports, chronic fatigue and obesity issues, to name but a few. Ruth loves the outdoors and can often be seen in the countryside walking or running and after having had a baby last year she is getting back to her other love of Yoga. Bildeston History Quarterly For over two hundred years, one branch of the Squirrell family lived and worked in Bildeston. Starting out as watchmakers and passing through other occupations such as liquor merchants, auctioneers, publicans, millers and maltsters to corn merchants, they have lived at various properties throughout the village and employed many local people. Their last place of business is remembered in the naming of the site as Squirrell’s Mill Road when developed for housing. In the 1520s, when Richard Stansby was appointed bailiff of Bildeston manor, he saw the position as an opportunity to ‘feather his nest’. He was already the second wealthiest tax payer here and living in a large house in Chapel Street. However, as the earl of Essex, the manorial lord, lived elsewhere, Richard began taking into his own hands real estate belonging to the manor as well as that belonging to other villagers. Eventually, the archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Cranmer and Thomas Cromwell (he of Wolf Hall) became involved. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk At this time of the year, as our towns and villages come alive with visitors, we are reminded of the importance of tourism to our local communities and economy. The constituency reaches from the undisturbed coastal beauty of the Shotley peninsula in the east, to Clare, one of our most distinctive wool towns, in the west. I have been working with groups from across South Suffolk who are coming together to raise the profile of their area. In Shotley, residents have been fundraising to regenerate their 122-year-old historic pier. As Suffolk's only remaining railway pier this project celebrates our coastal trading history and holds an ambitious vision for its future tourism offer. On the other side of South Suffolk, I recently attended the launch of the 'Visit Clare' initiative. By highlighting the wool trading history of Suffolk's smallest town, and linking with our other best preserved wool towns - Lavenham, Long Melford and Hadleigh - they are increasing the footprint of our area in the tourism market. Due to enormous wealth that surrounded the trade of wool in the 12th -15th centuries our wool towns are lined with timber-framed buildings and boast elegant churches. More recently, one of these streets famously made it into the final Harry Potter film. Now a major tourist attraction, the De Vere House in Lavenham is currently heralded as the second most photographed door in the UK, proceeded only by No.10! When you add these projects to the fantastic planned development of Gainsborough's House in Sudbury it is clear that our tourism sector is extremely vibrant. As a county, we are already attracting a high level of tourism with data showing that an estimated 52,000 holiday visits were made to Suffolk in 2016 by tourists from abroad. Compared to Norfolk for example, where there were 36,000 holiday visits in the same period, Suffolk is clearly working hard to attract individuals from around the world. In 2016 overseas visitors spent £62 million in Suffolk alone. In addition to our guests from further afield we also attract many hundreds of thousands of domestic tourists each year. By working together it is crucial that we continue to promote the bountiful and unique attractions of our area.

New one-stop shop for private healthcare opens in Hadleigh A newly converted private healthcare centre in Hadleigh town centre is opening this month. Day 1 – London to Dunkirk 6.00am on the 19th July after a night of thunderstorms 133 nervous but enthusiastic cyclists set off from Blackheath Common. Passing through the outskirts of London it wasn’t long before the cyclists were on quieter roads which lead them into rural Kent and onto Tonbridge, then across the hills of the North Downs to Dover for the ferry crossing, everyone appreciated the time out of the saddle after cycling 85 undulating miles. Once docked at Dunkirk there was a short cycle ride to the overnight accommodation, a good night’s rest was required ready for the early start of day 2. Day 2 Dunkirk – Cambrai This was the longest day in the saddle but the terrain was mainly flat. The route passed through small villages and farmland towards the Belgian border, then through the region where there was a great deal of WW1 action. This area used to be part of Flanders, many place names were more Flemish than French. The days ride finished heading southeast; there were a few hills before reaching Cambrai. After cycling 104 miles into a headwind the ride had proven harder than imagined. Day 3 Cambria – Soissons A shorter distance today but hillier terrain with the headwind still present, the route passed through small villages and then onto wider boulevards through historic towns with striking churches and town halls. The final section of the ride passed through an area involved in the WW1 battles of the Aisne and many villages had cemeteries and memorials to the fallen. Then there was the most challenging hill of the ride, this didn’t prove pleasant with the accumulation of mileage in the legs. Fortunately the ride into Soissons was a wonderful descent which meant the legs had the opportunity to spin out after cycling 70 hilly miles. Day 4 Soissons – Paris The final day of cycling headed southwest with a few short sharp hills then the roads rolled gently along as busier roads approached. It was then the suburbs of Paris were in sight with the Eiffel Tower and the Sacre’ Coeur standing out on the skyline. Reaching the suburb of St. Dennis then approaching the River Seine following its northern esplanade in the shadows of the Bois du Boulogne. At this point the cyclists were grouped together to ride to the Pont d’lena and finished beneath the lofty arches of the Eiffel Tower. We did it! What a team with 350miles cycled and £280,000 raised for Alzheimer’s Society including £2,500 personally, thank you to everyone that donated and supported me along my fundraising and cycling journey for this worthy cause. Layers The turning of the seasons is something that occupies discussion between us Brits as much as tea and the forever divided pronunciation of the word ‘scone.’ I’m sure I remember Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter having much clearer distinctions and occurring at the correct time of the calendar year. But these days it feels as if we can experience any of these at any point and often, it seems, on the same day! Even within our own county there appear to be microclimates particular to each town or village. On a day where we, here in mid Suffolk, may be enjoying a gloriously sunny day, relatives on the coast are shivering in downpours of icy hail. I think this lends us rather well to layers. Before duvets came along we were a nation of sheets and blankets allowing accurate control of temperature depending on how many layers we add or peel off. Today, we are now accustomed to doing the same with our clothing. Heading out on a walk it would not be unusual to set off in vest and shorts and arrive back in jumpers and raincoats or vice versa: cardigans on, cardigans off, cardigans on…surely this is exercise in itself! Talking of heading out for a wander it is now the time of year for brambling. A wonderful pastime of combining a nice walk around our country side and foraging fruit along the way. Despite finding myself up to the eyes in jam, having an abundance of fruit from the garden, I still feel a lure to head out and snaffle a few extra blackberries from the hedgerows. And this, surely, as much as anything is a sign that the seasons are on the turn. There is a feel of Autumn in the air now (although my husband swears it is still summer and is steadfastly refusing to change from shorts to long trousers) and I welcome it as it is my favourite season. But I know others find it less pleasing for it heralds the approach of winter. Each season has its downsides but abundant pleasures also and it is those niceties, such as the beautiful colours, smells and tastes of fruit, veg and flora at this time, that are to be savoured.

How can you help speed up the process of buying a house? They say there is nothing quite as stressful as moving house – and it’s true, the process can be long and arduous. There are several aspects to the deal that can cause complications: Is there a chain? Are you buying with a mortgage? Are you buying a leasehold property? However, there are a number of practical tips that you can employ to quicken the transaction and reduce unnecessary irritation. How does the buying process work? Buying or selling a house can be a bit of a jigsaw puzzle – each piece has to fit into place before the transaction is complete. Once the buyer and seller have agreed on a price, your solicitor will receive the details of the purchase from the estate agent, make contact with the seller’s solicitor, examine the sale and purchase contract, perform the necessary searches and if necessary raise any enquiries with the sellers Solicitor. Your solicitor will then advise you when it’s time to sign on the dotted line, before agreeing a date for the exchange of contracts and for completion (move in day). Your deposit will be sent to the seller’s solicitor, along with the signed contract. On completion day, your solicitor will pay the balance to the seller’s solicitor and, once the money is received, the keys are yours. An average conveyancing transaction takes 8-12 weeks from start to finish. How can you help speed up the process? Ways that you can help quicken the transaction include: • Once your offer has been accepted, advise your solicitor immediately. • Communicate with the estate agent and your solicitor any holiday dates early on in the transaction - this will enable your conveyancer to send you anything that requires a signature. • Get the searches on a purchase paid for and ordered as soon as your solicitor receives draft contracts. • If you have any specific enquiries about the property, make sure you tell your solicitor immediately. What about if you are selling? You don’t need to wait until you find a buyer for your property to start the conveyancing process. It will help speed up proceedings if you start filling out the standard forms and collating all relevant supporting documents as soon as your property is placed on the market. Having these documents completed in advance means that when you accept an offer, your solicitor is able to send out the contract pack to the purchaser’s solicitor immediately upon receipt of the agents particulars. WW1 Battlefield Tour for members of the Porch Project

On August 8th & 9th the Porch Project were fortunate enough to be able to take seven young people to France on a two-day WW1 Battlefield Tour. This was made available to us by Mark Brennan and the Hadleigh Great War Centenary Fund. What a wonderful opportunity for local young people to witness first-hand the great sacrifice and bravery of their local forefathers. After the excitement of the Eurotunnel, a new experience for many involved, we headed into Belgium for our first stop at a small cemetery. The whole trip focused around Hadleigh men who had fought and lost their lives in the Great War. Mark had fantastic information about each man, photos, letters home and postcards, which made it ever more poignant. We placed a small cross at each grave we visited to commemorate the Hadleigh men. Our next stop was Ypres (or ‘Wipers’ to the British soldiers) and the Menin Gate. This was a good chance for everyone to soak up the culture and grab an ice cream. Here we found one of the young people’s Great Great Great Uncle’s name commemorated on the Menin Gate itself. A hugely important monument for fallen soldiers in the region. Back on the bus we headed toward our accommodation in the Somme region. Even the building we stayed in was a former British officer’s headquarters complete with trenches. Fed and watered we bedded down for the night, well eventually after numerous “lights out” requests. Our second day involved travelling down the western front visiting various Commonwealth Cemeteries. This really bought home just how many people across the world were and still are affected by the Great war. After a spot of well-earned lunch, young Tyler Hansen volunteered to dress up in full WW1 soldier gear and we learned a little more about the conditions the men had to fight in. If you’ve ever used the phrase “kick the bucket” go on google and find its origins. As we meandered back North nearer to Calais and home we visited another few key areas, one of which being an 80-foot-wide and 60-foot-deep bomb crater, that was a sight to behold. We then concluded our trip in Thiepval. Here stands an enormous Memorial to the missing, listing the names of over 72,000 British & South African servicemen who died during the battles of the Somme. The whole trip and all of its emotions culminated here. The sheer size and presence of the place certainly had a powerful impact on all the young people. It has to be said there was a few of us moved to tears. What an amazing way to end this trip, we really had all learned so much and firmly placed our thoughts and feelings alongside those few Brave Hadleigh men that gave so much for us all. Great memories for all involved and the biggest thank you to Mark Brennan

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre The start of a new year for our school age riders, we are so excited to see you all again and to hear about your new classes. Even our adult riders are embarking on new challenges, some of them aiming to get more qualifications, some of them trying for certificates, and some just wanting to enjoy the contact with horses again after a long summer break. For those of you who are new to Shelley, a big welcome! I write my blog from the ‘quiet room’ in which I am firmly anchored, facing the yard that I can spy through the door. It is an interesting position to be in; my sister simulator Babs is much older and smaller than me but she works just as hard because she is easier to mount for some of our older riders who use the hoist. We may be machines but our action replicates that of a real horse. As I am more sophisticated than Babs I actually look rather handsome, (see the photo of me) and my riders can use the normal aids to make me change pace etc. So if you are coming up to the yard for any reason please come in to our room and meet us, we love to show off. As is always the case, we should love to have more human help too. If you are suddenly an empty nester with your darling last child safely launched, or your big four year old starting school this term, do think about doing a couple of hours a week here with us, you will be surprised at how good it feels to be helping the Shelley team do what we do! You get training on the job, so people who don’t usually ‘do’ horses are as welcome as anyone else. If you don’t ‘do’ people either, why not join the maintenance team and be out on your own in the fields listening to the kestrels? It’s a tough choice I guess; luckily for me riders and volunteers come to me so I don’t have to stir my stumps to get involved. Come along to the Grand Opening of Hadleigh Hall Nursing Home Former world boxing champion Barry McGuigan will be celebrity guest at the grand opening of Hadleigh Hall Nursing Home from 11.30am to 2pm on Tuesday, September 26. Local people are invited to come along to the event at Kingsley Healthcare’s newest home, in Friars Road, Hadleigh, to meet the former featherweight and share memories of his famous fight nights. Manager Emma Beckett said: “We are thrilled to have secured the services of such a popular celebrity. “So we can know numbers for catering, it is essential that people contact the home by September 19 if they wish to attend. This year’s Gayford Flyer, Hadleigh Cycling Club’s annual sportive, will take place on 10th September. There are two signed rides of 62 miles (100km) and 31 miles (50km). The sportive is supported by The George, The Pedal House, Crockatt Garage, Sunny Day Cycleworks, East of England Co-op and Rattlesden Gliding Club. HCC is also raising money for the Brendan Oakes Trust. The Club’s annual Go Ride Race day was a terrific success, with over 20 young cyclists taking a part in a range of activities at the High School. Riders are invited to gentle social rides starting at 8am from The George on Sundays, weather permitting. Adults and “capable children accompanied by an adult” are all welcome. Summer Sunflower Competition Closes 30th September During Dementia Awareness Week, in May, the HDAA were out and about in our community raising awareness and understanding of Dementia and how by understanding a little can help families to live well in our wonderful community of Hadleigh. This year we celebrate 25 years of animal rescue at Leavenheath, culminating (big word for a little dog!) in our Open Day and Fun Dog Show at the end of July. Ex SESAW dogs returned with their owners to show us how well they were doing and the magnificent sum of £4650 was raised. Everyone was completely shattered but very happy by the end of the day and more dogs have since been rehomed. Grateful thanks go to all who supported SESAW and to the hard working volunteers who made it all happen. The money raised will help care for many residents at SESAW including a newly arrived pair of Kune Kune pigs. Although their owner died, Peggy and Bob settled quickly, in time to meet the Open Day visitors. 64th Burstall Show Saturday August 5th was a fantastic day in spite of having a short heavy rain shower just after the opening of the Show. A good very happy crowd came again to support our Village Show and the exhibitors had entered some excellent exhibits in all Classes.. Hugh Richards was a worthy winner of the Open Vegetable, Vegetable Grown for Pleasure, and Flower Classes, with Rupert Catlin winning the Best Vegetable exhibit in the Show with a pair of superb Cabbages and also the Burstall Vegetables Trophy. The Best Flower Exhibit.was won by Jane Fiske for her House Plant. The Flower Arranging Class was won by Jane Steele and her arrangement of the theme ‘Wedding Bells’ was justly awarded the Best Exhibit from strong competition in this class. There were very strong entries in the Preserves, Cookery and Handicrafts sections, and these were much praised by the Judges. Jane Sago from Bramford, a long time member of Burstall WI and currently the President of the East Suffolk Women’s Institute, was the worthy winner of the Homemade Preserve Class, with Ann Day winning the Burstall Cookery Cup, and Hayley Mann from Sproughton winning the Open Cookery section. Anna Cooper from Burstall won the Open Handicrafts Class, and also a new Best Handicraft Exhibit Shield very kindly given to the Village by Mike Branton in memory of his late wife Janet (nee Beaumont). This was an exceptional piece of needlework designed and crafted by Anna and was much admired by the Judges and visitors. The Men Only Entries Class was won by Richard Sago from Bramford. There were good entries in all the Children’s Classes, and the enthusiasm of those competing augurs well for the future. Cara Crisp, Sophie and Charlie Woolf, and Paige Debman won the trophies for their respective age groups. The best exhibit in these classes was won by Ben Phillips for his ‘On Holiday’ Photograph, and the Children’s Potato Challenge was won by Fran Pratt, and the Adult’s by Pat Smith. The Children’s Biggest Spider Plant entries brought success to Charlie Evans and Katie Cooper in their respective age groups. Trophies were presented by the President of the Show, to these very worthy prize winners. Live, but rather wet at times, entertainment was provided by the Hoxen Morris Dancers and by a traditional ‘Punch and Judy’ show. Several Classic Cars, Motor Cycles and other Vehicles were on show and brought back happy memories to many. Ken, Mel and Kim Seager from Sproughton very kindly masterminded and organised a most enjoyable and well supported Fun Dog event – a great success in this new format. The Woolf family arranged for three pens of their farm livestock to be present - a Red Poll cow, two sheep, and a sow with suckling piglets which enhanced the wide range of stalls and side sows that were present in both the village hall grounds and the meadow behind. Such a happy day does not happen by accident. Much hard work was expended by many people to achieve yet another great success. Thanks go to all who kindly and cheerfully helped contributed and supported the Show. Special thanks to the sponsors, stewards, judges and exhibitors of the Flower Show, to donors of Grand Draw Prizes, bottles for the tombola and other items for sale on the stalls. Thanks also to those who prepared the showground, organised, erected and helped with side shows, and last but not least to those who contributed food and served refreshments throughout the day, and to those who washed up and cleared up at the end. The standard of food continues to be excellent and, as always, is a marvellous credit to the limited resources of the small parish of Burstall. Those who worked so hard to provide and serve lunches, teas, BBQ food, ice creams, cakes and drinks throughout the day really do deserve special praise. Our small village has the continuing responsibility for maintaining its fantastic Village Hall for the benefit of all our residents both now and in the future. With the tremendous support we have had from our 64thShow, we hope we are well on the way to raising sufficient resources to fund it’s future in the tradition that has been inherited by us all. We are very grateful for the support given to this annual community event, and believe that all who visited and contributed to the Show had a very happy day out. Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday August 14th 2017 Well, what an evening we had! Our last meeting was the Garden Club's contribution to the Hadleigh Festival of Gardening and Art being held this year, with three personalities from BBC Suffolk making up a panel for our own version of Gardeners' Question Time. Our well qualified experts, from left to right in the photo, were Matthew Tanton-Brown, Karen Kenny and Graeme Proctor and they were certainly presented with some challenging questions - as ever the best questions seemingly the simplest ones. The threesome worked well together- they had clearly done it before - and answers were both informative and humourous. They certainly weren't fazed when asked at the very start to identify an ailing leaf which looked like something to be smoked ( it wasn't!) and we were all impressed by tips on tree growing, pest control and Karen's flag waving for mulching. We all went home entertained and much better informed. And next up on Monday September 11th At our next meeting we welcome back Rod Tibbs, who earlier this year proved to be an entertaining speaker on patio planting. This time he turns his attention to growing vegetables and making compost, certainly both are subjects most gardeners will have grappled with but possibly with varying degrees of success. We look forward to learning more and picking up some tips, do come and join us if you can the meeting will be held at Hadleigh Town Hall (entrance opposite The Ram) and starts at 7.30pm. Down to Earth ...with Dave With the very changeable weather we have been having in August you have to feel a bit sorry for the farmers trying to get in their harvest and all the school children away on their holidays. But for us growers the weather has been ideal, with enough rain and warm sun to keep everything growing nicely. The downside is that the weather is also perfect for the weeds. Just turn your back for a day or two and they are everywhere. The hoe is in constant use, as the soil is moist the weeds are easily removed. All the potato tops have been cut off and disposed of at the tip, this should stop the spread of any blight. I just don't like the idea of putting them on the compost. The potatoes are being dug up as soon as possible but will be okay for a couple of weeks and then stored in paper sacks back at home. All the onions have been lifted, dried off and also stored at home. We seem to have had a bumper sized crop this year, possibly due to the weather. The gladioli have again been brilliant, with the house full of colour, not only from them, but also from the loads of wonderful flowers given to my wife to wish her a speedy recovery from her recent knee replacement surgery. This is a very painful operation and it will take time before she is fully out and about. I did manage a little time off from my carer's duties to visit the Burstall annual show at the beginning of August. This is a truly old fashioned show with tents full of local crafts and produce. Despite some heavy rain it went very well and I could be tempted to enter some of the classes next year. I did check up and you don't have to live in Burstall to enter the competitions. At the recent very successful 'Gardeners' Question Time' the subject of used mushroom compost as a mulch was raised. I have long been a fan of this medium, and over the years have used bags and bags of it at very low cost, both on the garden and allotment. I was pleased that all three experts on the panel agreed with me. The one cautionary note given was that as it is a bit acidic it should not be allowed to come into contact with the base of any trees as it could cause some burning. Another advantage is that the compost has mycorrhizal fungi in it and this helps build up a strong root structure. Keep on dead heading, try to keep the weeds under control with a sharp hoe and, if you can, sit back and enjoy the sunshine. A couple of points of interest to end with - the rather extravagant plan to put a bridge of plants across the river Thames has finally been abandoned. This after a staggering cost of thirty million pounds. Finally the creator of Fullers Mill Garden at West Stow, Bernard Tickner has been awarded an M.B.E. for services to horticulture and wildlife in Suffolk. Our garden group met this lovely old gentleman when we visited his wonderful garden last year and I wrote about him in the October news. That's all for now, Dave

They were particularly popular with sewers in the 1920's and 30's when they could be joined together at the edges to make quilts. The technique has seen a revival in the last few years with many children in the 70’s and 80’s given toys made from puffs threaded onto elastic. “ This activity, supported by the Big Lottery Fund’s Celebrate programme, is part of the Museum’s 50th anniversary celebrations, marking its original opening in 1967. We have already worked with local Embroiderers Guild groups to create “Fabric, Fields and French Knots” an exhibition of new textile works displayed across our site that “Celebrate East Anglia in Stitch”. Our Longest Suffolk Puff Caterpillar attempt will allow anyone and everyone to get involved with the sewing theme as well as being part of our spectacularly Suffolk Guinness World Record attempt. The Bentwaters Cold war Museum is holding a special Open day on 17th September 2017 to celebrate both the 10th Anniversary of the museum and the unveiling of the A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft exhibit following restoration to the colours and markings whilst it operated from RAF Bentwaters. The base was in operation from 1944 to 1993 with initially the RAF and then the USAF from 1951, RAF Bentwaters played an important role in both WWII and the Cold War. The museum was opened in 2007 in the USAF Command Post and had grown to include a number of aircraft types that represent the Cold War. Of great significance was the acquisition of the A-10, affectionately known as the “Warthogâ€?, in early 2016. The USAF stationed 6 squadrons of A-10s at RAF Bentwaters and the nearby base of RAF Woodbridge under the command of the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing which was the largest wing in the USAF at the time in the 1980’s. It was a familiar sight in the skies of Suffolk and many locals often speak with fondness of this iconic aircraft. The Open Day will include an opportunity to view a special exhibition of the museum history. Other attractions are a display of classic American and British cars, military vehicles, fire engines, re-enactors in combat uniforms, USAF police vehicles, Birds of Prey display and hot and cold refreshments. Opening times are 10.00 to 4.00 and admission is the normal museum entrance fee of ÂŁ5.00 for adults, children free and concessions ÂŁ4.00. This is a great opportunity to see the A-10 and relive the past of Bentwaters and Woodbridge.

The Glyn Morgan studio sale Residents of Hadleigh and its environs will have the rare opportunity to purchase a piece of the town’s rich artistic heritage when the Glyn Morgan estate is sold at Reeman Dansie Auctioneers on September 27th. Glyn was one of scores of artists who came to Hadleigh to study at The East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing (often known as Benton End School), an independent Art School established by Cedric Morris and Arthur LettHaines at Benton End Farmhouse. In 1943 Cedric Morris visited Morgan’s home town of Pontypridd to judge an art competition and 17 Glyn Morgan oil on canvas year old Glyn’s potential was 'Egret et Les Viviers' spotted. Glyn was prompted to Estimate £300 - £500 attend Benton End, first visiting in 1943, just two years after the School became established in Hadleigh, following earlier incarnations at Higham and Dedham. After 1943 Glyn attended the Art School as often as time would allow, particularly during its hey-day in the 1940s and 50s. He duly became one of Benton End’s most celebrated alumni, alongside such artistic greats as Lucien Freud, Maggi Hambling and John Skeaping. Although much of his career as artist and teacher was spent in Buckinghamshire, Glyn remained an advocate for the legacy of the Benton End School. In 1985 he organised a retrospective exhibition of Benton End works, and in the mid 1990s Glyn and his wife Jean retired to Hadleigh. Retirement for Glyn didn’t curtail his painting; the September auction includes works spanning a career of over 70 years of artistic endeavour. The Glyn Morgan collection is offered as it was discovered in his artist’s studio, featuring over 250 paintings by the artist, together with unframed and sketchbook material and also including art work by Cedric Morris, John Nash, Lucy Harwood and others in the artist’s circle. Glyn’s easel will be sold; previously owned by Cedric Morris, this was discovered in his garden studio and on it was a partially completed oil painting by Cedric Morris depicting Irises. This rare work not only reflects Cedric Morris’s dual stellar career as plantsman and artist, but ably demonstrates Morris’s unusual self-taught painting technique, often described as ‘knitting’, starting in one corner of the canvas and continuing until the painting is complete - observers claim he never returned to correct or embellish a part of the painting. Benton End students were encouraged to work free from influences and develop their own style, despite this, an in-house style, derivative of Cedric Morris, predominated and Glyn Morgan’s early work conforms to this also, in time however, Glyn developed a highly original hand. His studio collection includes both monumental and intimate works, his oeuvre contrasts ethereal landscapes imbued with Welsh myth and legend, portraiture and anatomically precise botanical watercolours, with pre-sale estimates ranging from £50-1,000. Glyn Morgan’s work is represented in the National Museum of Wales, The Welsh Arts Council, The Ipswich and Colchester Museums Collection, and numerous further important institutions and private collections. The Glyn Morgan collection will be offered as part of Reeman Dansie’s bi-annual dedicated auction of East Anglian Art celebrating our Region’s rich artistic tradition, other artists featured will include Alfred Munnings, Edward Bawden, Thomas Churchyard and many others, spanning over 200 years of artistic production. Crime Fiction and East Anglia by Kate Jewell Stoke-by-Nayland WEA presents a series of 10 Lectures starting on Thursday 28th September 2017 in Stoke-by-Nayland Village Hall at 7.30 pm. The evocative East Anglian landscape has long been an inspiration to tellers of stories of murder and mysterious death. This course begins with an exploration of the rise of crime as the source of entertainment for the masses. Then, using three novels by some of the greatest crime writers of the twentieth century, this course examines the genre of crime fiction in detail, particularly its use of East Anglia. Kate Jewell is an experienced tutor who has taught across East Anglia. Awarded a PhD in Medieval East Anglian Festive Culture in 2014, Kate now teaches courses ranging from Reading Old Handwriting to Drama Before Shakespeare. Are you in pain? (again and again?) September's thoughts by Hadleigh Osteopaths The summer holidays are over and we are returning to work or school. As we return to the same routine the old aches and pains return. Over the years the types of injuries and conditions that we see have not changes all that much, but the causes of these aches and pains has evolved considerably. When the practice first opened in Hadleigh in the early 1990s, we were treating quite a lot of agricultural workers who undertook heavy lifting and manual tasks, and quite a lot of factory workers . These people did lots of repetitive actions in the course of a day, and presented with strain patterns to their backs, shoulders and necks as a result of this. Times have changed and whilst we see patients with similar aches and pains from overuse or repetitive actions, it's fair to say that these are less likely to be caused by repetitive manual tasks, but now include postural overloads from sitting in the same position at a desk, or new actions and activities such as sitting with a laptop or tablet and playing games or browsing the internet. Years ago a mouse was a creature your cat came in with, not an essential piece of office equipment that gave you a repetitive strain injury in your shoulder or forearm. We see people holding a mobile phone and texting or talking everywhere we go now. Many people are constantly balancing their phone between a shoulder and an ear or staring down at their device. The human head can weigh 5kg and once the head is bent forward to look down at a device, often at up to a 60° angle, the neck muscles have to support five-times this weight. Long-term consequences of this activity may include neck discomfort, neck pain, stiffness, and headaches, and “text neck� predominantly affects the younger, otherwise healthy generation. Whatever the cause of your discomfort, the correct help and advice can stop these problems becoming recurrent. Heavy rain cleared, and the Masons’ home at Connies Cottage filled with supporters to enjoy a Vintage Tea Party. Chattering groups gathered around small tables set out in corners of their beautiful garden, while others socialised inside. The Masons team served out cakes and pastries, and poured endless cups of tea, many of the goodies were provided by village cooks. A vast raffle, including a Brand New Kitchen Sink, donated by Hadleigh Build Base, swelled the funds. The work behind this event, and the effort made on the day, is to be congratulated. The Mason Team, are quite a driving force! Laughter and fun filled the afternoon and St. Margaret’s thanks them for the Donation of £450.

Kersey Mill Newsletter Works have continued this month to the Hurst Frame restoration, concentrating on the repair and instalment of some of the brick structure underneath which over the years have become loose and in bad shape. The majority of the Northern section of the Hurst Frame timber structure had completely rotted away so with intricate work cutting away old rotten wood and reinstating with oak to match the original. Locally sourced oak from Thetford is being used. Fortunately the majority of the front side timbers have been repairable and pictured here are some magnificent scarf joints expertly delivered by Bill Griffiths. The machinery has painstakingly bees striped down & cleaned from many years of rust and freed from its seized state, all ready for the reinsertion once the timber repairs are complete. We have again this month had quite a few visitors to the mill including the Historic Buildings Club and The Dedham Art group who have capture some moments in time and around the mill. Kersey Mill will be hosting Jaguar day on Sunday September 3rd from 10am until 4pm. All public are welcome to come along and some beautiful classic and vintage Jaguars. Refreshments and raffle are being offered. A more scary thought - Christmas is four months away. We are already getting calls enquiring as to the date that tickets for Santa’s Workshop 2017 will be released. The Planet can be seen close to Mars on the 16th and 17th of September. Venus Is blazing away still in the morning sky at magnitude -3.9. It enters the constellation of Leo by the end of the month. Mars Is magnitude 1.8 and can be seen in the morning sky 2 hours before sunrise. The Moon is close by on the 18th. Jupiter Is magnitude -1.7 as it descends into the western sky at dusk. A crescent Moon is close by on the 18th. Saturn Is magnitude 0.5 in the evening sky. The Moon is close by on the 27th. September Sky I thought that this month we'd venture outside with our binoculars and locate a star cluster that is getting on a bit in years and is in fact, one of the oldest star systems you can see without large fancy telescopes. It is designated as M15, the M indicates it was first documented by the French astronomer Charles Messier in his catalogue of objects that resembled Comets. Jean-Dominique Maraldi is the first credited to have seen it way back in 1746. The object shines at magnitude 6.2 meaning even low-powered binoculars will pick it up and it is known as a globular cluster, that is to say, a large group of stars held together by gravity in a spherical shape orbiting around a galactic core. It lies at a distance of 32,600 light years and is dated to be 12.0 billion years old. It's physical width is some 175 light years across. The stars combined have a total luminosity of 360,000 times that of our Sun. The cluster homes 100,000 stars and contains over 100 variable stars and even 8 pulsars and a double newton star system. Another thing you'll notice from the image is the vast amount of red stars. This is a clue as to the age. As stars age they change colour. Our very own Sun will become a red giant star in around 5 billion years (this will spell the end of Planet Earth I must add as we are consumed within the outer layers of the Sun's atmosphere). So get out there on the next clear evening and look at a piece of real space antiquity. Until next month clear skies. Hilda Rule Rose competition Stoke by Nayland Lady Vets played the Hilda Rule Rose Bowl Medal on Monday. Despite the driving rain the match was well supported. The Rose Bowl was presented by Joce Mallett, a past Lady Vets Captain, to Elaine Davidson with a nett 77, 2nd was Maryan Griffiths with 81, and 3rd was Nora Hutchinson with 83. Our social members joined us for a well deserved lunch, where they shared their memories of times past.

There will be 96 competitors from over 20 different countries, including 15 WPGA members, comprising winners from the WPGA’s One Day Series and the remaining places secured via a qualifying Order of Merit. Fifteen places will also be allocated to the leading English amateurs decided by England Golf, recognising LETAS’s commitment to providing an important link between elite amateur and professional golf. Success for the Men’s team at Hadleigh Tennis Club The HTC men’s team successfully completed their program and won their division in the Summer League. They will therefore move up a division next Summer. We are looking for more men to play league tennis both next Summer and in the forthcoming Winter Floodlight League where the Men’s team won promotion last year. If you are interested in playing competitive league tennis why not come along to a Club Play session (see below) to find out more. In September we have the annual match against Bildeston which was initially held well over one hundred years ago. Hadleigh have been successful in recent years but it has been getting closer. The venue alternates and a good match is anticipated at the Layham Road courts in Hadleigh on 10 September. Prior to that we have the Club’s Ladies doubles on 3 September. The Club Play sessions during British Summer Time are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sundays from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. The Club Play continues in Winter on Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings. There are 3 floodlit all weather courts located on Layham Road next to the rugby club. RETAIL MOTOR INDUSTRY FEDERATION
It was a busy 2016/17 season for our swimmers with galas, open meets and championships aplenty. We are very proud that athletes from Hadleigh Swimming Club represented us at Development, County and Regional level this season with many personal bests and medals achieved – well done to all those swimmers and thanks to the parents for all the support and ferrying around! Pictured are some of the team who represented our club at the Suffolk ASA Summer League Grand Final, held in July. The annual Summer League takes place over three rounds, held at pools across the county and is a great opportunity for young swimmers to compete against other clubs and support their team – it’s usually quite a noisy affair! All the swimmers who took part gave it their all and lots of fun was had. We also hosted an in-house 25-metre race night to raise funds for the club. This was a great chance for all sections of the club to come together and swim fast and furious races with a delicious buffet afterwards – thanks again to all involved. Looking ahead to the new season we are excited about our trip to the London Aquatics Centre to train in the pool where many of our swimming heroes competed in the Olympics and European Championships, as well as attending open meets, galas, improving our fitness and technique and of course achieving new personal bests. Swimming is excellent for all-round fitness and is accessible to all. Learning or training with Hadleigh Swimming Club is a great way to establish a long-term healthy lifestyle as well as making new friends and offers the opportunity to compete, or not, as you wish. Hadleigh Bowling Club The 2017 outdoor league season in coming to a close with just a few matches to be played. All in all it has been a very successful season. Our BE Mixed Triples team are currently top of their league and are in the semi-final of the league play offs. The BE Men’s Triples team have secured promotion to Division 1 of the Ipswich and District League. The Federation “A” Team need a good win in their last game to also secure promotion. The other teams are having a reasonable season with finishes generally mid table or above. We offer congratulations to Clive Joseph for winning the County Novices Final and Kyle Leeks for winning the County Under 18 Final. Kyle went on to the All England Finals where he battled through 5 rounds to reach the Final whereupon he was beaten on an extra end. It was cruel luck, however he should be justifiably proud of his performance. We wish him well in the All England Under 25 Finals next weekend. Di Miller, Barbara Bourner, David Kemp and Peter Miller won the John Furnish Trophy at East Bergholt on Sunday 13th August so our congratulations go to them also. On the home front our internal competitions are getting to the final stages which will be held at the club on Saturday 9 September. Now that the League commitments are reducing we have our annual John Ward Trophy starting on Friday 18 August with 8 teams of 6 bowlers taking part over a 2 week period. It is always a popular competition and is guaranteed to produce some shock results.

More than 500 entrants over six days again made the annual Jonathan Lambert Festival of Golf a big success at Newton Green Golf Club. The week was given a major send off in the form of a veteran vehicle show, specially staged to mark the 110th birthday of the club. It was followed by a wide range of social golf matches aimed at embracing the whole club. It finished on Saturday night with golf week chairman Dora George hosting a presentation party after more than 120 golfers had taken by the Jonathan Lambert silver salver. A record 92 players for a shot gun start at Newton opened the 18-hole events for Tuesday’s Delaney Scramble, and a contingent just short of that number battled round as rain dominated the following days Stableford competition. With a justifiably unfavourable forecast for later in the day, a Foxes and Rabbits event had already been cancelled. The clouds gradually lifted for the rest of the week, and 12-handicapper Tim Richardson, with 42 points, put his name on the Saturday salver after previous near misses in other years. Generally, a blustery wind and a testing course set up, made scoring tough, although Alex Iveson managed to take the junior award with 39, including 26 on the back nine, and Gwyneth Ferreira the women’s best score with 35. In the gross score division, Carl Amos came home first with a creditable 72. Cross Country: 14 Gareth Evans, 12 Doug O’Hara, 11 Steve Knappett.
