Amblers enjoyed the return to Needham Lake in August followed by the repast in the Duck and Teapot Mix cafe. We go to pastures new this month when we visit Alton Water on the 2 September. Lunch Bunchers were well catered for at the Brantham Bull and look forward to Fish and Chips (or other choice!) at the Ferry Boat Inn at Felixstowe Ferry on the 10th. When we meet on the 24th Bookworms will be discussing The Authenticity Project. Our book for September is a romance, Small Pleasures by Clare Chambers. We are extremely grateful for the continuing donations of preloved handbags and also for the generous contribution of toiletries and luxuries with which they are filled before distribution to organisations supporting victims of domestic abuse. Blister packs, white plastic bottle tops and egg boxes are being recycled as always. Michael Bacon’s talk in August about his experience as a journalist and latterly a thriller writer was very entertaining. A representative from Suffolk Recycling will be coming to our meeting on the 15th. We meet on the third Tuesday in the seminar room of the library. Until we are able to find a bigger room, unfortunately we are unable to enrol new members. Who doesn’t love a bit of bunting? Decorating our lovely town is a priority for the River Brett Festival next year and bunting along the High Street will be a key feature. We are already getting down to bunting business. On the last Sunday of every month our bunting workshop meets at the Leisure Centre. It is a hive of activity, chatter and laughter reflecting the aspirations of the Festival itself. The focus may be on creating colourful fishes and yellow ducklings, but the best outcome is meeting new people, sharing stories and anecdotes and in some case, learning new skills. Happily, all this social interaction has not affected production. The current number of fishes and duckling is over 2000. Their appearance along two sides of the High Street will herald the start of the Festival next June and stay there for the duration. However, we still have a way to go so if you would like to join this busy, friendly group why not come to the Leisure Centre on Sunday 27th September from 10 am to noon and help us reach our goal of 5,000? Lavenham Carpet Bowls Club
We are always looking to introduce Carpet Bowls to new players here at Lavenham Carpet Bowls Club, offering all equipment and advice to get started. We also have members from other clubs who play at Lavenham Village Hall, as well as their home clubs. Some clubs only have a ‘roll up’ session once a week, and often this is practising various shots, rather than playing a game. So if, like them, you would like to play on another day, you are welcome to come and play at Lavenham on a Thursday evening at 7pm. We have less attendees on Thursdays, as apposed to Wednesday afternoon at 2.pm. We have four mats available too, so you will probably get four bowls in each game. So whether you are new to Carpet Bowls, or would just like to play more, we look forward to welcoming you to Lavenham.

Our walk on Saturday Sept 12th will be a circular one of 9.5 miles starting at Somersham. We will meet at the Duke of Marlborough pub (IP8 4QA, What3words ///prime.aliens.pixel). We will depart at 9am and proceed in a clockwise direction via Willisham, Baylham Stone, Nettlestead, Lt Blakenham Hall, Tye House, Flowton and back to Somersham. We should be back around 1pm and will have two refreshment stops along the way. Please note that in future, our all our walks will start at 9am. In the summer heatwave a coach full of keen gardeners visited East Ruston Old Vicarage gardens in Norfolk. We were pleased to have many members of U3A and friends to join us to make the trip possible. With 32 acres to explore every turn brought a new vista from a sunken rose garden to a box parterre. Mediterranean areas and woodland, each a garden in themselves. The gravel garden and sub tropical areas were inspiration for ideas to try in our own gardens with high temperatures set to be the normal in years to come. The many seats in shady corners were a welcome stop as was the cafe for lunch or just an ice cream. September 21 meeting has Jim Payne talking on “ Botanical Gardens - A Grand Tour”. The competition is a single Dahlia in a vase. Do come along to the Guildhall at 7.30 am. A warm welcome awaits at a cost of £2 members , £4 visitors followed by refreshments and raffle. Private Art Dealing Service for Collectors
A
Hadleigh Old School is a former 19th century boys’ school which art dealer Ian Grutchfield runs as a gallery space and events venue hosting around four art shows and four theatre productions a year (the latest touring show being ‘The Phantom of Friar Street’). Next year a major retrospective of Richard Bawden is planned. Specialising in Modern British paintings, especially those by artists who lived and worked in the North Essex and South Suffolk, Ian Grutchfield manages the sale of selected works for the Suffolk gallery, handling private transactions and coordinates placements with institutional collectors, such as art societies and museums. The venue provides a showcase, such as the prominent exhibition ‘Come into the Garden, Maud’ which was organised at Hadleigh Old School specifically to display the work of Joan Warburton. Following the show, collectors are invited to negotiate and select works directly through the gallery’s private channels (email hadleigholdschool@gmail. com, follow on Instagram @ hadleigholdschool). Work is not regularly listed online to keep it fresh and prevent digital staleness - and as pictures are better seen in person. Enquiries are welcome with the gallery having exclusive access to a range of artworks not on display, for example this gouache on paper by Joan ‘Maudie’ Warburton painted in 1970.

We were delighted to run a team building evening for Matthew Douglas and his staff which Matthew reported a huge success; a lot of fun, food, and some scarily good bowlers some of whom were inspired to consider joining. An idea other companies might want to think about. The observant among you will have noticed in the photo that bowls are scattered quite widely round the white target jack but let me explain: bowling is a very strategic game with bowls tactically and carefully placed. Although to be fair, for some bowlers other explanations are available. On to applauding our champions, Gillian Barnes who won Bowls England County 2 Wood Ladies Singles, and Sue Saunders who won Bowls England County 2 Wood Ladies Singles Over 55’s, plus Shearers who won their 2 Wood league and will be promoted next season. Malcolm Higgins was runner up in the Bowls England County Men’s Novices tournament, and our Wednesday Federation 3 Wood and Thursday 2 Wood both came second in their leagues. Congratulations and fireworks all round, or maybe not till we get plenty of rain. The Club is flourishing with 21 new members which meant an extra print run for the handbooks and as ever, Jason and his team at Avis helpfully produced them quickly and efficiently. And finally the indoor short mat season is almost upon us with the first casual roll-up on 8 September and the first league game on 24 September. Hadleigh’s own version of the Last Night of the Proms comes to St Mary’s Church on Saturday 24th October. The Hadleigh Orchestra and local singers of all ages will re-create this interactive evening of music, singing, flag waving just like the Albert Hall event without having to travel to London. Music varies from Mendelssohn’s emotive Hebrides Overture (Fingal’s Cave) to the stirring title music from Thunderbirds. There will also be an opportunity for the audience to join the singers for a rendition of Jerusalem, Rule Brittania and Land of Hope and Glory. The fascinating story behind Little Hall
The Gayer-Anderson brothers, Major Robert Gayer-Anderson (1881–1945) and Colonel Thomas Gayer-Anderson (1881–1965), were remarkable figures whose lives combined military service, scholarship, collecting, and a passion for history. Best remembered today for their outstanding collections of art and antiquities, the brothers also played significant roles in the British Army and left a lasting legacy in both Egypt and England. Born in Listowel in Ireland, the brothers spent much of their childhood in England before both going on to pursue military careers. They both trained at Sandhurst and were commissioned into the British Army at the turn of the twentieth century. Their early service took them across the British Empire, where they developed a keen interest in the cultures and histories of the countries in which they served. Following service in WW1, Major Robert GayerAnderson remained in Egyptian government service, where he became deeply immersed in the country’s history, archaeology and artistic heritage. He learnt to speak Arabic and was highly respected by Egyptians and Europeans alike. He mixed with the great and good of the British ex-pat community in Cairo, becoming friends with some of the era’s most celebrated figures, including T. E. Lawrence (“Lawrence of Arabia”) and the archaeologist Howard Carter, discoverer of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. Robert’s knowledge of Islamic
art and Egyptian antiquities earned him an international reputation as an authority and collector. One of his most important pieces was the bronze statue of the Goddess Bastet. It dates from the Late Period of ancient Egypt around 600 BC and is now an exhibit at the British Museum and is considered one of the museum’s greatest masterpieces. His dedication to Egypt was recognised by King Farouk I, who in 1942 bestowed on him the honorary title of Pasha, one of the highest civilian distinctions of the time. In 1924, the brothers travelled to the Suffolk village of Lavenham to find a country home for themselves and their widowed mother, with Robert planning to spend summers there away from the heat of Egypt. Captivated by the village’s exceptional medieval architecture, they purchased what is now known as the Great House. They later discovered that the purchase also included the adjoining Little Hall. At first, Little Hall did not appeal to them because its exterior had been pebble dashed. However, once inside, they saw the impressive internal beams and realised the building was historically significant. They decided to make Little Hall their Lavenham home and began a full restoration of the medieval building, a project that took more than ten years. In 1936 they finally moved in and sold the Great House to their friends, the renowned photographer Humphrey Spender and brother, the poet Stephen Spender. This marked the beginning of the brothers’ lasting impact on Little Hall and Lavenham as Thomas (the Colonel) also became involved in campaigning to preserve Lavenham’s array of medieval buildings, thus protecting the historical legacy we still enjoy to this day. The Gayer-Anderson brothers’ lives spanned continents and cultures. As soldiers, scholars, and collectors, they combined military achievement with a lasting commitment to preserving history. Their legacy continues to inspire historians, collectors, and visitors in both Cairo and Lavenham. From family history to strange cures
I have been delving into my family history again during these past few weeks to keep me occupied, yet cool in our rather hot summer. As always far more questions than answers. My grandfather was the thirteenth out of fourteen children. Cecil and his brother George were the only boys to survive. There were five more boys, three died within their first year, the other two only lived until they were three. This made me wonder, why didn’t they survive? Was there a genetic disorder? Why did so many children die in the nineteenth century? Some of the common causes of death in the nineteenth century were; Typhoid Fever, Scarlet Fever, Cholera and Tuberculosis. Not so common although evident was Leprosy. Fortunately, now that children are immunised and vaccinated against illnesses such as whooping cough, measles, tetanus and smallpox, it is extremely rare for a child to experience any of these. The cures and treatments for these childhood ailments were handed down for generations back to the early Egyptians and passed on mainly through travellers. My mother was advised by some friendly travellers that we would see regularly as my mother would cycle with me strapped on the back from Rodlet into Watford (This was in 1949). I was very sick with Whooping cough; they advised my mother to cook a mouse, make me eat it and rub my feet with melted lard mixed with garlic. Thankfully, all I was subjected to was the garlic ointment on my feet. So, what other strange cures were our ancestors advised to administer? Don’t continue to read this if you are eating! Suggested cures for Whooping cough, all the following cures were recorded as being administered in Suffolk. Roasted mouse was quite popular. Laying a live fish on the child’s chest, the fish would then take the illness away. It had to remain there until it died, which shouldn’t last too long. If several children in the family were
all sick then hair would be cut from the eldest sick child, cut into tiny pieces and immersed in warm milk. The youngest child would drink this cure? Then it was repeated with the other children. In Monk’s Eleigh they would catch a frog and hang it in a net in the chimney. They believed that the frog would remove the infection. Another cure, not quite so revolting was to make the sick child crawl through a slit in the stem of a young Ash tree. Snails were another suggestion, pass a handful of small snails through a child’s hand then hang them on a string and suspend them in the chimney. It was a common practice to use leaches for so many different ailments, however these were applied by a doctor. So, a common cure for gout, flue and a fever was to swallow a small spider and piece of its web that would be placed inside an apple and eaten by the patient. Another alternative was stale ale, mixed with mustard seeds and ground nutmeg. If you suffered from joint pains, then sheep dung placed on the offending joint was supposedly quite beneficial. I think I will stick with paracetamol. Sue Ayres

The Joy of doing things slowly at Orchard Barn There are times when it feels as though the whole world is speeding up. Faster communication, faster travel, faster decisions. We seem to have become rather good at hurrying. At Orchard Barn, we spend time doing things that modern life might consider wonderfully inefficient. We make string from nettles, sharpen old saws rather than buying new ones, repair timber frames instead of replacing them, and build with earth, timber, straw and lime – materials that have served us well for centuries.

It would certainly be quicker to do many of these things another way. Yet, when we slow down, something unexpected happens. We notice more. We learn from one another. We value skills handed down through generations and take greater care, not just of the task in hand, but of the people alongside us. Perhaps slowing down isn’t really about doing less. Hadleigh Tennis Club
Hadleigh tennis club has continued to play throughout the hot weather and is now turning its thoughts to some of the traditional events we celebrate in the autumn.

One of these is the annual tennis match we play against Bildeston. Hadleigh tennis club is one of the oldest in the country and can trace its origins back to 1881 when a match between Hadleigh and Bildeston was recorded in a newspaper article. Hadleigh were victorious on that occasion. This tradition was revived in 2011 and has continued as an annual event ever since. Hadleigh tennis club currently hold both the men’s and ladies trophies, see this space next month for this years results. The match will be on September 6th at Bildeston. The after match refreshments are eagerly anticipated. The ladies winter league entries are being made and the team are looking forward to some enjoyable Saturday morning tennis, hopefully without too many weather related disruptions. Do come and join us at Layham Road, Tuesday evenings 6.30pm to 8.30pm and Sunday mornings 9.30am to 11.30am. we look forward to welcoming any newcomers. County Cllr Simon Dowling, Hadleigh Division (Green Party Group) Hadleigh, Kersey, Whatfield, Layham & Raydon Residents invited to have their say on future of children’s health services Residents are being invited to have their say on the future of Suffolk’s Healthy Child programme. A public consultation, running until 18 September 2026, covers proposed changes to the Family Nurse Partnership, Young Parents Pathway, and School Nursing and Health Visiting services. Demand for support has increased significantly in recent years. The service has increasingly been responding to complex and ongoing needs that are often better supported by other services. This has reduced its ability to focus on what it was originally designed to do – providing early help to children and families and preventing problems from getting worse. The council is therefore proposing to refocus the service on its core role, making sure support is available where it can make the biggest difference and that children and families get the right support from the right service at the right time. Support will continue, but some services may be delivered in different ways. Under the proposals: • The Family Nurse Partnership and Young Parents Pathway would no longer run as standalone programmes, with support for young parents instead provided through health visiting, early help services and wider support networks. • School Nursing would move from an open-access model to a more targeted service, focusing on those with the greatest need. • The Health Visiting service would be strengthened, with more support led by Health Visitors and greater continuity of care for families. These changes would be supported by wider improvements to services for children and families in Suffolk, including stronger early help, better SEND support and more mental health support in schools. While this would not replace everything that may change, alternative support is being put in place so families can continue to get the help they need. The consultation closes on 18 September 26, with all feedback considered before a final decision is made later this year. The consultation can be completed online at https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/council-and-democracy/consultationspetitions-and-elections/consultations/healthy-child-servicesconsultations Printed copies and accessible formats are available on request. Budget outturn for 2025-26 financial year Cabinet has reviewed the council’s financial outturn for the financial year ending 31 March 2026 (when the previous administration was in power). The council overspent last year by £15m overall, a figure which will need to be taken from its reserves to balance the books. The main areas of overspend for the council are in care purchasing for Adult Social Care, and children in care placements. Other areas in adult care did exceed their savings targets for the year, but the increase in demand was still greater than the money saved. The Dedicated Schools Grant (DSG), a ‘negative reserve’ where the council holds its debt for overspending on Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), increased by £70m over the year. The government recently announced it would pay off 90% of councils’ DSG debt in autumn 2026, but this will still leave Suffolk County Council with £16m of DSG, which will continue to rise until the government takes over SEND funding from April 2028. Major Incident stood down at Dunwich Heath — but people must continue to stay away The Major Incident declared in response to the Dunwich Heath wildfire has been stood down as of 10 August 26, following the latest fire risk assessment. However, Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is stressing that the incident itself is not over, and people must stay away from Dunwich Heath. Firefighters will remain at Dunwich Heath, continuing to damp down the affected area, monitor for hotspots and respond to any further fire activity. Fire crews brought into Suffolk from across the country during the height of the incident, under National Resilience 26

Preventing wildfires There have been several other fires in the open across Suffolk over the past few weeks. All residents and visitors are being urged to avoid any activity which might start a fire: don’t light barbeques and campfires, dispose of cigarettes and matches safely, put all litter in a bin so that it can’t act as fuel for a fire. To help protect your home from a wildfire, remove all flammable debris such as wood, dead leaves and long grass from around any buildings, and clear dead leaves from guttering. Make sure that any flammable materials like fuels, fertilisers and pesticides are stored away from your house. Energy efficiency loans available for Suffolk residents Homeowners across Suffolk can now apply for a loan to help fund energy efficiency improvements to their homes, thanks to a partnership between Suffolk County Council and Lendology. The Warm Homes Suffolk Loan scheme offers eligible homeowners access to loans from £2,000 to £15,000 at a fixed interest rate of 2.2% Annual Percentage Rate (APR) with repayment terms of up to seven years. Borrowers may also repay their loan early without penalty, subject to eligibility and loan terms. The funding is designed to support residents who want to improve the energy performance of their homes while spreading the cost of installation over a manageable period. The loan can be used for a range of energy efficiency measures, including: • Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems • Solar battery storage • Solar thermal systems • Ground source heat pumps • Air source heat pumps • Double and triple glazed windows and doors • Loft, wall and floor insulation • Ventilation systems when installed alongside insulation measures Installing energy efficiency improvements can help homeowners reduce their energy bills and create warmer, more comfortable homes. A well-insulated and energy-efficient property can also have positive benefits for residents’ health and wellbeing, particularly during colder winter months. Hello to all our readers, I hope as always you have been keeping well. I am happy to let you know that we have finally secured our new land and in the process of preparing to move, hopefully by the end of this month. We are under pressure and are going as fast as we can, but as people generally know, nothing is always straight forward in life. The new home at the time of writing this is not ready to accommodate our animals, due to all the work and preparation needing doing first, to make it safe for them. So at the moment it is impossible to move until we can make it safe, which we are presently going as fast as we can and are full on doing. Then we have the major task of moving, here is where we need help from the local community, if you have a trailer or van, truck anything that could help us take our belongings over please call me, we need team work and HELP! The land is in Hadleigh, so we hope our regular volunteers from surrounding villages will be coming with us on our new journey going forward. Also just to let all know, our website is down, because Weebly who we were with have sold squarespace and while doing so they have lost our website, we have been trying for weeks to get it back, but you can never speak to anyone and if you can get them on chat, they just say “we cannot find your details” plus they are in the USA and it looks like all of our website pages have gone! It has been a nightmare, as we have lost everything, even our back up has gone. We still have our Facebook page, but not our lovely website. Another part of the team we are looking for is a website designer, do you know someone or can you help us? Our animals still need lots of daily love and care, so you are welcome to come and give them some TLC alongside our regular volunteers, who do a great job, bless them, as they have all learnt to deal with my tendency towards excessive orderliness and perfection, with the cleanliness around our animals and the best daily care they need and to me they must have. John Smyth’s passing, at the age of 83, is deeply felt by everyone at Hadleigh Cricket Club. Our thoughts are with Gloria, Robert and all his family at this very difficult time. John was not only a legend of our club, but one of the great characters of Hadleigh – a local lad who became a long-time employee of Partridges, and loved the town where he lived. What John didn’t know about heavy duty agricultural machinery wasn’t worth knowing, frankly. Through his work at Partridges he was an ever present at local agricultural shows, and won numerous long service awards, including one presented by the Duchess of Gloucester at the Suffolk Show. He was even given the honour of being profiled in the Community News in 2009 in its ‘Hadleigh characters’ series. John played for the cricket club for over 50 years, one of a very select few who could say this. After joining at the age of 14, he played mainly in the 2nd team but also for the 1st team at times. He scored 9,007 runs and took 284 catches, keeping wicket for a good part of his career. ‘Smudger’, as he was affectionately known, was a reliable batsman, never getting too flustered with what was going on around him, and utilizing his inimitable ‘squat cut’ to score plenty of his runs. Such was this shot’s legendary status that in his book to mark the club’s Bicentenary, Richard English made it the subject of a humorous piece, imagining that the MCC had recognised the shot in all ‘future coaching manuals’! John was still going on our tours to Norfolk and Kent in his later playing years, entering fully into the spirit of those excursions, and was proud to be the club’s umpire when we had the distinction of playing at the Nursery Ground at Lord’s in 2010. John was a kind and gentle soul who would often reduce his teammates to stitches with a wry comment, never took himself too seriously and was much loved by everyone who played with him. But John’s contribution to Hadleigh Cricket Club was so much more than this. He didn’t just serve on the Entertainments Committee for over 40 years – in many respects he was the Entertainments Committee, promoting the club’s many functions and selling most of the tickets! Fundraising through social events was incredibly important during this time, and John played a huge part in helping the club improve its facilities. Chances are if you lived in Hadleigh between the 1960s and 2000s, and frequented Partridges, John would have tried to sell you a Cheese and Wine ticket, as well as the latest Massey Ferguson! John was also a keen footballer for Hadleigh United, and was part of the team that won the Suffolk Senior Cup at Portman Road in 1969. He was proud to see his son Robert follow in his footsteps and play cricket at a high level for Hadleigh and other local clubs. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Gary Wiles
