Are we ready for a Festival?

Village Edition

Hadleigh is a great community to be part of, isn’t it? How lucky we are to live here, especially in this crazy, uncertain world. We can go for a walk along the river, the Railway Walk, up Constitutional Hill or through Wolves Wood to see the beauty of nature. We can enjoy the Christmas Market and feel part of something bigger than ourselves. At HEAT (Hadleigh Environmental Action Team), we think it’s time Hadleigh came together ÖÜÖÞã ÖãÙ ìÚąÙ áÞàÚ éä ØÚáÚ×çÖéÚ éÝÚ áäëÚáî ÍÞëÚç ½çÚéé éÝÖé Ĝäìè éÝçäêÜÝ äêç éäìã ìÞéÝ Ö river festival. All festivals need to be fun and get everyone involved, so this will be a festival for the whole of Hadleigh, and especially for children, young people and families. We’re also thinking of all the people on our new estates. There’s a lot to organise, so it won’t be until the summer of 2027, with events leading up to a weekend carnival and fun activities. The kinds of things people are suggesting include games, puppet making, theatre performances, music, singing and dancing, painting and photography exhibitions, poetry workshops and essay competitions. We also plan to hold volunteer sessions to look after the river and its banks, nature walks, talks and displays on the history and ecology of the river and town, and talks by national experts. Hopefully, Hadleigh sports clubs will join in and organise some games too. There’s no shortage of ideas. There’s lots to think about, lots of decisions to make, and lots of people, groups and organisations to get on board. With your help, we are Continues overleaf

Hadleigh Walkers Our walk on Saturday 10th January is a 10 mile circular one starting and ending at the Six Bells pub at Preston St Mary (CO10 9NG, What3words coordinates ///asserts.powering.sedative). Please park in the large car park at the rear of the pub. We will meet at 9.30 am and proceed taking in Hill Fm, Valley Fm, Great Hasting Wood, Park Fm, Castle Hill, High House Fm and back to the Six Bells at around 2 pm even allowing for 2 refreshment breaks along the way. As usual, we aim to maintain a not-too-demanding 2.5 mph (4 km/hr) however remember that on the day any weather is possible so strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground will be muddy or rough in places. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. As usual, route maps can be requested from the website. As we are beginning a new year, everyone is reminded that we walk every month on the second Saturday. The group had a small residue of funds at the year end and will, again, donate the excess to local charities. More details next month. Friends of Lavenham Library The Friends of Lavenham Library were very busy last month with two very successful fundraising events. Friends of Lavenham Library fundraiser christmas wreath making workshop Thank you to everyone who came to our Christmas wreath making event in December. A fantastic afternoon was enjoyed by all with so many amazingly creative ideas! Special thanks to our wonderful volunteers Diane, Jean & Gill for organising such a fun and successful fundraiser for our library, which raised over £200 for our Friends Group, which will help support future community events for the library! Father Christmas visits Tot Rock! Thank you to all the parents and grandparents, toddlers, babies who came along to our festive singing - 21 in total! Thanks also to Sue & Gill for volunteering your support was essential! A BIG thank you to Father Christmas who took time out of his busy schedule to visit us and spend time with the children, giving them an early Christmas gift! It will be open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 24 January, with free entry and a warm welcome to anyone from Hadleigh and the surrounding villages. The main aim of the day is to provide an opportunity to try out activities in taster sessions run by professionals in the health and wellbeing sector; there will also be talks about places to volunteer and a change to chat informally with local organisations. Our picture perhaps makes you think of the phrase – the "world is your oyster" – why not come along and meet people ready to lend a helping hand. Please read on for full details. Who is Aurora? A group of volunteers who came together via a peer support group for mental health and now have self-funded the Aurora Well Being Fair to showcase more positive methods to improve life through being active. What to expect at the Fair? A welcome desk in the Ansell Centre – with receptionists able to explain the chart of sessions taking place during the day. Lavenham Carpet Bowls Club Wishing everyone a happy New Year from the Lavenham Carpet Bowls Club. Our sessions restart at Lavenhan Village Hall on Wednesday 7 ÅÖãêÖçî Öé åâ ÖãÙ ÏÝêçèÙÖî $ ÅÖãêÖçî Öé #åâ Hopefully you will be able to see our new coloured bowls which were obtained with a Community Lottery Grant. They look great on our blue and green carpets, and will make playing much easier to see which team’s bowls are closest to the Jack. ÒÚ ěãÞèÝÚÙ áÖèé îÚÖç ìÞéÝ äêç Þã ÝäêèÚ competitions for the Doubles and Singles champions, and will start the New Year with Triples competitions. We only do these competitions once a year, and not everyone wants to enter, but it is great to see how everyone has progressed through out the year and of course, trophies and medals are presented. But we also continue to run our usual sessions, keeping some mats for regular play. Hadleigh Old School Plans for 2026 As this publication goes to press, we are about to host two more performances of Sherlock Holmes Smells Evil by the Common Ground Theatre Company. The run stands to break house records with over 300 people watching live theatre in our Bridge Street venue. Thank you to everyone who attended, we appreciate your support. The Common Ground players are one of the last touring companies in East Anglia, producing original work, without subsidy, with their success based on telling stories with a great cast of actors, musicians and writers, in a tradition that goes back to the touring troupes of Shakespeare’s time. Looking ahead to 2026 we are pleased to announce that this Easter, Hadleigh Old School will be staging a major art retrospective dedicated to artist Joan Warburton, some 30 years since her passing. The friend of Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines was a mainstay of their East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing in staying with them at The Pound in Higham and at Benton End in Hadleigh. Joan Warburton was considered one of the most distinct and individual of the art school alumni and her painting compared to Morris’s by the Tate Director in 1984. Co-curated by journalist and editor, Lindsay Fulcher, and Hadleigh Old ÎØÝääáąè ÄÖã ÂçêéØÝěÚáÙ éÝÚ éÞéáÚ äÛ éÝÚ èÝäì Þè Ą¾äâÚ Þãéä éÝÚ ÂÖçÙÚã Maud’, a quip Arthur Lett-Haines made shouting up to Joan who was looking out from a bedroom window at The Pound, his home with Cedric ÈäççÞè ¼ÛéÚç éÝÞè èÝÚ ìÖè ÖáìÖîè àãäìã Öè ĄÈÖêÙÞÚą ÏÝÚ ÚíÝÞ×ÞéÞäã Þè being staged with the kind permission of the O’Malley Estate (including Joan Warburton’s son, Twig, and her great niece, Carolyn Jenkins) with provenance provided by the family’s long-standing agent, Sally Hunter Fine Art. Lavenham Fireworks 2025 It’s now a Lavenham tradition that each year in November many local businesses and individuals join together to help raise money for our village pre-school and primary èØÝääá The Lavenham Fireworks, known previously as The Small Night Out, ÝÖè ×ÚÚã äçÜÖãÞèÚÙ èÞãØÚ $ ×î the Friends of Lavenham School and Lavenham Pre-school. Each year the event has grown bigger as more people have joined us on the night for a fantastic display of ěçÚìäçàè ÚãßäîÚÙ ÖáäãÜèÞÙÚ ÜçÚÖé ÛääÙ ÖãÙ âêèÞØ This year saw our greatest attendance yet, helping us to raise muchneeded funds for these local educational settings. We would like to thank everyone who has supported the event as the money raised has a huge positive impact on children’s learning and ÙÚëÚáäåâÚãé This year Lavenham Pre-school will put all of the money raised towards renovating and resurfacing our back garden to give children an ÖÙëÚãéêçäêè ÛçÚÚ Ĝäì ÖçÚÖ Lavenham Primary School will be working on developing a new learning area within the school grounds, with proceeds from the Lavenham Fireworks going directly towards this important project. Owls Class enjoyed an exciting three-day residential trip to Norfolk Lakes, a renowned facility in the Norfolk countryside. During their stay, the pupils had the chance to develop new skills and participate in a variety of activities within the purpose-built indoor activity centre. In addition to these indoor experiences, the children also spent time on the water, where they took part in raft building and kayaking. Robins Nativity Robins Class delighted both their families and members of the local community with their Nativity performance of the Sleepy Shepherd at Elmsett Methodist Church. The children took to the stage with enthusiasm, sharing this Christmas story.

Forest School Day Forest School is an enriching experience for all our pupils, taking place throughout the year. Our younger children regularly venture into the woods each week, where they engage with nature and take part in a variety of outdoor activities. For our older pupils, the Forest School experience is extended further, as they spend a whole day in the woods each half-term. This new facility would not only secure the long-term future of the Men’s Shed, but also provide a versatile and welcoming space for other likeminded community groups to use and enjoy. The proposed workshop, studio and kitchen will be ideally suited to a wide range of handson and creative activities, including arts and crafts, woodworking, model-making, woodturning, needlecraft and knitting, repair cafés, mindful making, cooking lessons, adult education and more. Hadleigh Garden Club Happy new year to everyone. Êêç çÚØÚãé èåÚÖàÚç ¾ÝçÞè ËÖçěéé ×çäêÜÝé Ö breath of spring with his lovely photographs of beautiful gardens in Cornwall. It was a trip through many well loved and visited gardens such as Trebah, Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project, as well as smaller less well known gardens. His knowledge of Cornish history such as the China Clay industry and Tin Mines kept us enthralled together with captivating photography. As we start the new year our January speaker is Lynne Moore with a talk entitled “What’s in a Name”. The competition is a house plant, so bring along your favourite - it’s only for fun. Although Spencer’s life and career are largely synonymous with his native village of Cookham in Berkshire, he also spent a great deal of éÞâÚ Þã ÎêĚäáà âäèé ãäéÖ×áî ÒÖãÜÛäçÙ ÖãÙ ÎäêéÝìäáÙ äã éÝÚ ØäÖèé ÃÞè association with the county spanned four decades, initially through the ÚíåÚçÞÚãØÚ äÛ ÝÞè ěçèé ìÞÛÚ ÃÞáÙÖ ¾ÖçáÞãÚ $$% %! A talented painter in her own right, Hilda had worked as a Land Girl in Wangford during the First World War. In 1924 Spencer, Hilda and other members of her family stayed there for a painting holiday. Along with their two young daughters the couple moved back to Cookham, but Hilda was increasingly absent, visiting her ill brother. During this time, ÎéÖãáÚî ×ÚØÖâÚ ÚãçÖåéêçÚÙ ìÞéÝ Ö îäêãÜÚç ÖçéÞèé ËÖéçÞØÞÖ ËçÚÚØÚ $% %"" ÖååÖçÚãéáî ä×áÞëÞäêè éä ÝÚç çäâÖãéÞØ ÖãÙ ÖçéÞèéÞØ åÖçéãÚçèÝÞå ìÞéÝ ¿äçäéÝî ÃÚåìäçéÝ $% %#$ Infatuated, he began to spend increasing sums on jewellery, clothes and perfumes for Patricia and by 1935 had become seriously indebted. ÃÞáÙÖ áÚÛé ÝÞâ ÖãÙ Þã % " ×ÚÜÖã ÙÞëäçØÚ åçäØÚÚÙÞãÜè ¼ÛéÚç Ö ÙÚØçÚÚ absolute was granted in 1937, Spencer married Patricia. Spencer followed a few days later, but very quickly realised that his new marriage was a sham and felt that he had betrayed Hilda. Seeking comfort and solace by returning to the source of his earlier ÝÖååÞãÚèè ÎåÚãØÚç äãØÚ ÖÜÖÞã éçÖëÚááÚÙ éä éÝÚ ÎêĚäáà ØäÖèé çÚëÞèÞéÞãÜ familiar landmarks and would write movingly of being able to reestablish Ö ØäããÚØéÞäã ìÞéÝ éÝÚ áÖãÙèØÖåÚ ÖÛéÚç ÝÞè ÙäâÚèéÞØ ÙÞĝØêáéÞÚè ÏÝÞè juncture of his life, with its complicated domestic environment, is çÚĜÚØéÚÙ ìÞéÝ Ö Üçäêå äÛ ìäçàè äÛ ÖãÙ ×î ÃÞáÙÖ ËÖéçÞØÞÖ ÖãÙ ¿äçäéÝî These include Spencer’s striking and intimate Nude portrait of Patricia Preece (1935). Catching a bus to Southwold each day from Wangford, Spencer produced one of his most popular paintings, Southwold (1937). The scene will be familiar to visitors today, featuring a glimpse of a blue beach hut in the left-hand corner, while the foreground is dominated

It is a scene that initially looks full of joy, but closer inspection suggests that the viewer – or indeed Spencer – is distant, removed, and çÚĜÚØéÞãÜ äã ìÝÖé âÞÜÝé ÝÖëÚ ×ÚÚã ÏÝÚ ÚíÝÞ×ÞéÞäãąè éÝÞçÙ ÖãÙ ěãÖá èÚØéÞäã ÚíåáäçÚè Ýäì ÎåÚãØÚçąè áÞÛÚ and loves were at the heart of his visionary imaginative paintings. The immense upheaval in his personal life served as grist to his creative mill. Many of the paintings made at this time, and subsequently, were intended for a vast, unrealised scheme called ‘The Church House,’ or ‘The Church of Me’, with side chapels dedicated to the principal women in his life. Important works from the collection of the Stanley Spencer Gallery, including Beatitudes of Love: Contemplation % $ At the Chest of Drawers % " ÖãÙ Ö Üçäêå äÛ ĄèØçÖå×ääàą drawings, illustrate Spencer’s vast imaginative project, and show how he fused biblical stories, childhood memories, romantic relationships and his beliefs about heavenly and earthly love, in a series of visionary paintings. Sarah Tubb and the Heavenly Visitors (1933) is an example of how familiar places and spaces could ×ÚØäâÚ èØÚãÚè äÛ éÝÚ ÙÞëÞãÚ ÏÝÚ painting relates to a story told to Spencer by his father, in which Old Stanley Spencer (1891-1959). Perhaps as a visual call for the viewer to open their own eyes to the hidden spiritual world all around us, Spencer shows the elderly woman comforted by angels or 'heavenly visitors'. ÇäëÚ ÇÖãÙèØÖåÚ ÎéÖãáÚî ÎåÚãØÚç Þã ÎêĚäáà has been generously supported by the artist’s family with the loan of personal items that have never been previously displayed, including Hilda Carline’s wedding suit. Bildeston Primary School Learning and Growing Together Christmas at Bildeston Primary – A Season of Joy and Togetherness This Christmas at Bildeston Primary was truly magical! Our Reception and Key Stage 1 children shone in their Nativity performance, bringing the story of Christmas éä áÞÛÚ ìÞéÝ ØäãěÙÚãØÚ ÖãÙ ÚãéÝêèÞÖèâ ËÖçÚãéè enjoyed the show after sharing tea and mince pies—a perfect way to celebrate together. The pub crawl along Benton Street The Hadleigh Historian conducted by Mark Lawrence The Hadleigh Historian continues with the Flying Chariot, Issue 91 December 2025 - January 2026 Price £4 now Nos. 92-94. Mark not only looks at the attractive building – one of Hadleigh’s delights – but also relates its ownership and occupancy over the years. Listed Grade II* and described Öè "éÝ ØÚãéêçî Þã äçÞÜÞã Ö çÚØÚãé architectural report tells that part is at least a century earlier. However, it is the mid-17th century carvings featured on the façade that make the Flying Chariot stand out and it is thanks to Kit Glover that photographs of these fascinating decorations accompany Mark’s most interesting story. Hadleigh Local Studies Workshop is currently researching biographies to accompany the memorials in St Mary’s Church. After a busy life at Ipswich, in 1734, watchmaker and goldsmith Tobias Searson retired to Hadleigh. Apparently, he was involved in setting up the church organ ÖãÙ ìÝÚã ÝÚ ÙÞÚÙ ÖÜÚÙ $ Þã #"# ÝÚ áÚÛé ÝÞè âêèÞØ ÖãÙ ØÝäçÖá èÚééÞãÜè for publication, which would suggest that he had been the organist and choirmaster. Hadleigh Tennis club The winter weather has not stopped the hardy members of the tennis club from getting their exercise on a Sunday morning and Tuesday evening. Only rain or frost will stop us from getting down to the tennis courts and having a run around and a few sets of competitive tennis. Pick up your racquet and come and join us, from 9.30 am on a Sunday, " åâ äã Ö ÏêÚèÙÖî The ladies team are enjoying their Saturday morning league matches and are currently in a mid-table position in their division. Members and friends enjoyed a Christmas social evening at the rugby club, which was a great chance to meet up and have a chat which we don’t always get round to while playing. At the time of writing members are looking forward to enjoying some mince pies to brighten up a Sunday morning before Christmas and on Boxing Day, weather permitting, when we hope to blow away the cobwebs with a few games of tennis. Citizen scientists have been celebrated for carrying out vital work to improve Essex and ÎêĚäáà çÞëÚçè ÀèèÚí ÖãÙ ÎêĚäáà ÍÞëÚçè Ïçêèé (ESRT) held an awards ceremony éä âÖçà éÝÚ ěçèé ÖããÞëÚçèÖçî of the Essex RiverWatch, a collaborative citizen science project that has seen 70 volunteers take monthly samples from their áäØÖá çÞëÚçè ÖØçäèè ÀèèÚí ÖãÙ ßêèé äëÚç éÝÚ ×äçÙÚç äÛ ÎêĚäáà They test the water to monitor indicators of river health such as nitrates, phosphates, temperature and turbidity, as well as record wildlife. This crucial data is then collected and analysed so groups can deliver the right interventions in the right places. The evening’s keynote speech was delivered by Mark Lloyd, CEO of the National Rivers Trust charity. He said: “I’m delighted to be able to celebrate our volunteers. With the limited amount of money we’ve got, we really rely on local people to take action locally, to speak the word, to get people on side and get people taking action. “The amount of data we’re getting from volunteers is a success. We have the information now to make decisions about how our rivers should be improved.” A growing movement for river recoveryThe Essex Rivers Hub catchment partnership is made up of organisations including ESRT, Essex Wildlife Trust, Anglian Water, the Environment Agency and many community groups. ESRT hosts the partnership and delivers RiverWatch as part of its mission to restore, protect, inspire and build resilience in local rivers. ESRT hopes to hit 100 volunteers over the next year so they can build an even bigger picture of the country’s waterways. ¿ç ¿ÖãÜÚçěÚáÙ èÖÞÙ “We’ve already seen how powerful communityled data can be.
