Lavenham, Suffolk — One of Suffolk’s most anticipated annual community events is returning this August Bank Holiday weekend with a bumper display of automotive history, live entertainment, and local food. The Lavenham Classics Motor Show will take place on Sunday, August 30, 2026, from 11 am to 4 pm. Now entering its third decade, the landmark show will transform the scenic cricket fields at the Recreation Grounds on Bridge Street, Lavenham (CO10 9SH). Visitors can get up close to a spectacular lineup of more than 150 classic cars, spanning decades of motoring heritage. Stepping into the driver’s seat this year is returning event organizer, Margaret Hare. She is working tirelessly to ensure the historic show retains its status as a firm village favorite while delivering a vibrant, festival-style atmosphere. “We are incredibly proud to reach this three-decade milestone,” said Margaret Hare, Event Organiser. “We are working hard to ensure this event includes all our absolute favorites—from incredible live music to a fine range of food and drink supplied by brilliant local businesses. While admission remains free for all visitors, we do ask for a minimum £3 donation to support the event and our charity, the Lavenham Community Council. Every single penny raised goes directly back into supporting our local village community.” Alongside the motoring displays, visitors can enjoy live entertainment from acclaimed vocalist JD The Soul Machine, bringing a soundtrack of classic soul hits to the fields. A high-quality, local food and drink village will keep attendees fueled throughout the day, featuring: • Suffolk Smash serving up premium, locally sourced burgers • The Creperie Shack offering delicious sweet and savory crepes • The Roll Stop providing freshly prepared gourmet rolls • A dedicated Coffee Truck for specialty hot drinks • The Backyard Bar serving refreshing alcoholic and soft beverages Supporting Local Causes & Event Parking The event is run entirely in support of charity, with all funds raised going directly to the Lavenham Community Council to help fund vital local needs, facilities, and projects across the village. While admission is free, paid visitor car parking is available and can be booked in advance via Eventbrite. Organisers are also encouraging visitors to leave their cars at home to reduce village congestion by taking advantage of improved public transport options. Under the campaign slogan “Catch the bus, much less fuss,” attendees can use the extended 753 bus service, which now conveniently runs via Lavenham on Sundays and Bank Holidays. News from RDA Shelley The final weeks of the Summer term at The Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding are the ‘show’ weeks. Almost all of the riders participate in one or both of two competitions – Countryside Challenge and Dressage. We are indebted to Mary Thornley who kindly gives her time to judge these classes. Mary is well known as a dressage judge and in the local equestrian world, having The Countryside Challenge includes given a great deal of her time riding through the trees – pictures taken by John Boyle. in recent years to the Pony Club. Countryside Challenge is similar to what some riders will recognise as the Riding Club or Pony Club competition of Handy Pony. In the Shelley Countryside Challenge the arena is set up with a course of obstacles that simulate a trail ride. Riders may take part with their horse led, including with the support of side walkers if required, or unled when in the arena. The aim is to specifically display balance, steering, accuracy technical knowledge and safety. The course includes elements such as opening and going through a gate, posting a letter and crossing a ‘bridge.’ We are very fortunate at Shelley to be able to use the opening a gate element to then leave the arena briefly and ride through an area of trees, where the rider is also given marks for correct position when riding uphill and then downhill. Although in recent years it’s been difficult for the Centre to take horses and riders to external events, some groups are able to take competitors all the way to the RDA Countryside Challenge National Championships. Following the Countryside Challenge we then have our Dressage Week. In fact neither competition only takes a week as the horses and ponies would get bored doing exactly the same thing for each session of the day and may start to anticipate the tests – which could give Friday’s riders an unfair advantage if the horse has learned the test by then better than the rider or their helpers! This year, due to the hot weather, at time of writing some of the dressage tests are still to be completed. Many of our riders take the competition weeks very seriously and (like some pictured here) wear formal showing attire to take part. Taking a long holiday abroad There are many dates of importance within the Government’s Social Security Act and two of them are worth noting. They are:

15 May 2019 and 28 July 2016 The first date was the introduction of mixed age couples. Mixed age couples are defined as one being of working age and the other being of state pension age. The second date introduced a reduction in the time spent outside of the UK and retaining benefit entitlements, from 13 weeks to 4 weeks. It is also necessary to note that travel to Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man is still considered being abroad for the purpose of many benefit regulations, even though these areas are within the UK.

Now here we have a mixed age couple. Paul, in receipt of a state pension, has also been claiming pension credit (PC) for himself and his partner who is still under pension age, since 2018. They are also getting housing benefit (HB). In October 2025 their son paid for them to visit him in Australia for a family reunion and holiday. They were away for 5 weeks. The maximum period for which PC and HB can be paid during an absence from the UK is 4 weeks. They are away for 5 weeks and as a result their entitlement to both benefits ends. On their return they cannot requalify for either PC or HB until Paul’s partner reaches state pension age. The financial loss of benefit entitlements can be very significant. I never cease to be inspired by discovering the various origins to the words we use and the history behind them. I recently bought a book by Caroline Taggart called ‘Humble Pie and Cold Turkey’ which I found fascinating. I am sharing a selection of these facts with some extra background. Just as you get a jetty that sticks out into a harbour and was originally designed to protect it, this is traced back to the French word jeter to throw. The expression to describe something, maybe a secret that has been overheard comes from the word eaves the part of a roof that projects at the side of a building, that catches dripping rainwater from the roof. County Cllr Simon Dowling, Hadleigh Division (Green Party Group) Hadleigh, Kersey, Whatfield, Layham & Raydon Protest at county administration’s reversal of climate emergency. The Green Party group has condemned the reversal of Suffolk County Council’s climate emergency declaration, which was first made in 2019 and reaffirmed in 2023. At the full council meeting on 16 July, a motion to reverse the declaration was passed as Reform UK holds the majority of votes in the chamber. Reform UK also intends to review all environmental projects at the council with a view to making financial savings by scrapping any such schemes that cost the council money. But the council has in fact saved money with its carbon reduction programme since the declaration, including £4.8 million a year by reducing energy use. Green councillors argued that this was both a poor decision and a backwards step for the council, and that it ought to be setting an example to Suffolk residents by doing whatever it could to minimise its impact on our environment and climate. Dozens of local protesters gathered outside council HQ before the meeting to hear speeches by Adrian Ramsay MP and local councillors, as well as by representatives of local union branches. Bus services for all parishes or only some? The Green Party group proposed in the recent council meeting that SCC introduce the goal of a minimum five day a week bus service for all Suffolk parishes. We argued that Suffolk residents need better bus services to access employment, education, shops and health care. Two out of five Suffolk parishes have no bus service to the nearest town during commuter hours. Despite being supported by every other political group, the motion was voted down by the Reform UK administration. This rebuff came as we learned that SCC has secured £564,000 in new Department for Transport (DfT) funding to conduct a full feasibility study into bus franchising across the county. The funding means Suffolk can carry out all research at no cost to local taxpayers. The feasibility study will include consultation with residents, bus companies, district and borough councils, businesses and other stakeholders. Post-16 Travel Policy agreed for 2026-27. The council has confirmed the Post-16 Travel Policy for the academic year 2026-27 with no changes for the second year in a row. The charges therefore remain: • £1,050 for a mainstream seat • £780 for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) • The 50% discount remains in place for students from low-income families receiving Free School Meals and for students with an EHCP or SEND (including those without an EHCP but unable to travel independently due to disability) who also receive Free School Meals. Some post-16 education providers also provide bursaries which can assist families on a low income with travel costs, and cheaper travel may also be possible via public transport in some cases, so parents and carers are recommended to look into these options too. £3.6 million investment in new fire engines. Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service has invested in a new fleet of fire engines across the county. The eleven new vehicles are in addition to the existing fleet and have been bought as part of the service’s ongoing fleet renewal programme to make sure fire engines are up to date and reliable. Suffolk Against Fraud partnership launched. Suffolk Trading Standards has teamed up with Suffolk Constabulary and businesses in the county to launch Suffolk Against Fraud. They will work together to investigate, share information and prepare campaigns to raise awareness and protect vulnerable people and small businesses. Residents who think they may have been a victim of fraud should report it at www.reportfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040. If money has already been transferred, they should contact their bank immediately. Adult Social Care service again rated ‘Good’ by Care Quality Commission. Following an assessment by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), Suffolk County Council has again been awarded an overall rating of “Good” for the quality of its Adult Social Care services. Whilst the report is very positive overall, CQC has identified some areas where improvements are needed, including reducing waiting times in parts of the system and ensuring reviews are consistently person-centred. 14

Suffolk County Council plans £18.9m investment to expand SEND support. Suffolk County Council is set to invest almost £19 million of government funding to create hundreds of new specialist education places for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The number of children and young people with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) has increased by 17% in the past year, from 10,292 in April 2025 to 12,018 in April 2026. The proposed investment would provide: • 168 new specialist places in existing secondary schools through specialist bases • 80 additional places through satellite provision connected to existing special schools • £2 million to support inclusion in mainstream schools • £2 million for adaptations and improvements to mainstream schools • £1 million to develop specialist post-16 provision across Suffolk. The programme will focus on areas where demand is highest, particularly for children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and Communication and Interaction needs, including autism. Residents invited to have their say on future of children’s health services. Residents are invited to have their say on the future of Suffolk’s Healthy Child programme. The public consultation covers proposed changes to the Family Nurse Partnership, Young Parents Pathway, School Nursing and Health Visiting services. Support will continue, but some services may be delivered in different ways. Under the proposals: • The Family Nurse Partnership and Young Parents Pathway would no longer run as standalone programmes, with support for young parents instead provided through health visiting, early help services and wider support networks. • School Nursing would move from an open-access model to a more targeted service, focusing on those with the greatest need. • The Health Visiting service would be strengthened, with more support led by Health Visitors and greater continuity of care for families. The consultation closes on 18 Sep 26, with all feedback considered before a final decision is made later this year. Peter Holland turned to writing historical fiction in 2018 after completion of his MA in early modern history (1500-1800) during which he found inspiration for his stories. Our June meeting began with the very pleasant task of presenting St Elizabeth Hospice with a cheque for £1,000. This money was raised from our Annual lunch and we thank all that supported us in raising this money for such a worthwhile cause. This was followed by the very sad news that we had lost Lorna Hill, a member of our committee who sadly passed away a few weeks ago at the hospice. She was a very valued member of the club and will be sadly missed. Our meeting then continued with our usual format, a demonstration from Elaine Boobier from Maldon who gave us some lovely arrangements depicting a Night at the Musicals. We now have a break in August but will be back in September when our demonstrator will be Doreen Robinson with her title of Times Past. The meeting will be on September 8 at 7.30pm as usual at the URC. Hope you all enjoy the summer break and look forward to seeing you back in September.

The Hadleigh Historian Issue 95 (August – September 2026)

An organisation after my own heart is Hadleigh Official Town Guides, who spread the word concerning the town’s wonderful history, including arranging themed walks with a costumed guide. For example, ‘Miss Lawrence goes shopping’ visits High Street at the turn of the 20th century and ‘The rector’s wife, 1844’ centres on St Mary’s Parish Church and associated buildings. For Heritage Open Weekend on 12 and 13 September, the guides will be out in force and on the Sunday, there will be a costumed presentation entitled ‘Working lives of the past’, which focuses upon Hadleigh households and their servants. The front cover of The Hadleigh Historian Issue 95 shows the presentation’s costume made by Jane Snowdon for Toppesfield-Hall housemaid Florence Goymour, whose story is one that will be told. New contributor Kevin Page is welcomed to the magazine with ‘Privileged lives, yet touched by tragedy: a family at Friars’ Hall for fifty years’. Overlooking the town from the north-west and now a care home, Friars Hall was once the home of the Wilson family, of whom Kevin is a descendant. As corn merchants, maltsters, millers, farmers and brickmakers, T W Wilson & Sons was once the largest employer in the town and the family was probably the mostwealthiest. However, they did not remain aloof but contributed considerably to the local community as Kevin shows. Part 3 of ‘Frederick Barnes: architect of Hadleigh’s Victorian public buildings’ brings to an end the story of this Ipswich man’s engagement in the town with his last two schemes. When the original architect employed on the Town Cemetery failed at the first post in 1855, Frederick stepped in to oversee the work on a less-ambitious but nevertheless, important project. In 1862, when John Ansell planned to build a British School in Market Place (now the Ansell Centre), he had no further to look than at Frederick’s earlier work for the National Boys’ School in Bridge Street (now an Arts Centre). These schools are in different architectural styles and show the versatility of this man’s designs to meet their briefs and their budgets. In ‘Looking up in St Mary’s Church’, Roger Kennell invites us cautiously to crick our necks and ponder on openings above the springing of the chancel arch. He explains how important they were in the building as access to a superstructure over the chancel screen that stood there in late medieval times. However, there is currently no indication as to how these openings were reached but Roger solves this conundrum. During the 1850s, the Ipswich and Suffolk Freehold Land Society bought three areas in Hadleigh with the idea of dividing them into plots for sale in order to extend the male franchise. (The ability to vote was based on ownership of real estate.) Neither project at Gallows Hill nor that at New Cut were particularly successful and ‘The estate that never was’ looks at the third plan for land, tucked away in the far south-east corner of the parish, which never got off the drawing board. Free Wellbeing Walks in the Dedham Vale

Footpath Explorers is running a series of free Wellbeing Walks across the Dedham Vale, thanks to funding from the Dedham Vale National Landscape Sustainable Development Fund. These gentle walks are around 1–2 miles and are aimed at people who are new to our walks. They offer a relaxed way to enjoy the beautiful countryside, meet others and explore the local area at an easy pace. Walks finish with the option of refreshments at a local café or pub. Some walks include free community transport, while others are timed to connect with local bus services, helping more people enjoy the Dedham Vale without needing to drive. Amblers shortened their walk along Felixstowe promenade as it was so hot, though the coastal breeze was very welcome, unlike the masses of ladybirds. The coffee and cake were much enjoyed in the Wool Baa. Some took advantage of the nearby shop to stock up on items we used to purchase from Partridges. Plans have not yet been made for the next amble on the 4th. Brantham Bull did us proud last month and this month Viv has booked the Lunch Bunch into the Anchor in Stratford St Mary on the 13th. Bookworms read books of their choice either written by or about Jane Austen. This month we will be reading The Authenticity Project by Clare Pooley, meeting to discuss it on the 27th. We continue to support the charity Love Grace in memory of Grace who was murdered in New Zealand in 2018. She loved handbags and we collect preloved handbags filled with toiletries and little luxuries, which are passed on to victims of domestic abuse in Essex and Suffolk by her mother and cousin. We also continue to collect blister packs (one bin bag per week!), white plastic bottle tops and egg boxes for recycling. Contact Sheila Webb if you have donations for any of the above. Last month Erik Punaks returned to give an absorbing talk about Banjo Paterson the famous Australian author of Waltzing Matilda. This month we are welcoming Michael Bacon talking about his forty years in journalism before becoming a suspense thriller writer. HADLEIGH’S “NEVER-CAME” CANAL

PART THREE

If the canal idea had been successful – where would it have been? When you read this section, please bear in mind that these notes are compiled from a hand-drawn map that may date from Rennie’s first survey in the 1790s. Since writing the second item in this series Suffolk Records Office have found another document Ref B/105/12/8.1 enables me to explain some details of the route they actually expected to take through Hadleigh. I believe the map was prepared solely to get Parliamentary Approval for the route – (probably in 1833) and shows very little other detail. It is very small-scale and of doubtful accuracy, Calais Street for instance is strangely shaped and has almost disappeared under the red ink-line marking the route: Bridge Street is not shown at all. The High Street at that time was probably little more than a loose-stone road carrying only equestrian traffic, so the canal crossing it may not have caused as much disruption as we imagine!

The canal was then scheduled to cross the High Street. As it approaches the High Street it straightens for a short distance before crossing it – somewhere between the Calais Street/Bridge Street road junction and the former “Shoulder of Mutton” Pub (Now “The Shoulder House”) There is no real detail, but “best-guess” is that it was to have been close to the former Blacksmiths workshop at the end of High Street. There is nothing to show how he intended to maintain access to Calais Street or Bridge Street. (Bridge Street is not shown on the map anyway.) Even these small canals were substantial! The “cut” itself might have been about 3 metres wide, plus banks, a towpath and edging strip it would have added up around 7 to 8 metres.

So - a fair “gap”somewhere at the very end of our High Street. A Letter from a Bewildered Suffolk Ratepayer Dear Fellow Residents of Suffolk, I write to you from the comfort of my armchair, clutching my council tax bill and wondering whether I have accidentally subscribed to a comedy channel. It appears that Suffolk County Council has decided that, having just endured the expense and upheaval of the planned Local Government Reorganisation, what we really need is to spend even more of our money challenging the outcome. How thoughtful. Of course, this challenge will not be free. No matter how often politicians speak of “processes”, “reviews”, “consultations” and “legal considerations”, there remains the awkward reality that somebody has to pay for them. That somebody, dear reader, is us. We are told the costs will come from reserves. Excellent news! Except reserves are rather like the biscuit tin in the cupboard: if you keep taking biscuits out, eventually someone has to buy more biscuits. When budget time comes around, will we hear that reserves need rebuilding? Will services be squeezed? Will charges rise? Will council tax continue its upward march? One suspects the answer may be yes. So let us be clear. We appear destined to pay either way: through higher bills, reduced services, or a delightful combination of both. But wait—there’s more. Not content with reopening the debate on local government structures, councillors have now voted (on 16 July 2026) to rescind Suffolk’s Climate Emergency Declaration, originally adopted in March 2019, and commission a comprehensive review of climate, net-zero and environmental programmes. Another review. Because what Suffolk surely lacks is not affordable services, maintained roads, social care funding or efficient governance. No, what we really need is yet another commission, investigation, reassessment, reconsideration and reflection. Once again, officers will need to be deployed. Reports will need to be written. Meetings will need to be held. Consultants may need to consult. Papers will need to be produced for committees tasked with deciding whether previous committees were correct. And once again, somebody will be paying. Spoiler alert: it’s us. Meanwhile, residents struggling with rising household costs may be forgiven for asking whether this endless cycle of political pointscoring, revisiting settled decisions and commissioning reviews represents the wisest use of scarce public funds. There is a growing sense that Suffolk’s leaders have fallen in love with the rear-view mirror. Instead of focusing on delivering services, they seem determined to refight old battles and reopen old arguments. One might almost imagine a political handbook somewhere entitled “If in doubt, challenge it, cancel it, review it and then challenge it again.” Residents should pay close attention. Because every legal challenge, every review, every commissioned report and every piece of administrative theatre comes with a price tag. It may not arrive immediately, but sooner or later it lands on our doormat. The bill, as ever, comes to the taxpayer. So if your council tax rises, if your local services shrink, or if you are told that difficult financial decisions must be made, remember that money does not simply disappear. It gets spent—sometimes on things that directly improve residents’ lives, and sometimes on what previous generations would have called plain old tomfoolery. Residents need not agree on the merits of local government

reorganisation or climate policy. What we should all be able to agree on is that every pound spent on challenges, reviews and revisiting old decisions is a pound that cannot be spent on the services we rely upon.” Yours, in bewilderment and with one eye on the council tax demand, A Suffolk Ratepayer “Warning: Further reviews may be commissioned whilst reading this letter.”

Hello to all our readers, I hope as always you have been keeping well. As of last month’s news, not knowing if we would have signed for the new land, again here I am writing for August edition and still waiting to know what is happening while I write this, stressed to the hilt is an understatement. In our photo is dear little Coco and Ethel. As well as for all of us in this summer’s heat the animals are also affected by it, so I try to do as much as possible to help them, our animals have 24hour access to all of their shelters which have hay and water inside and is a cool place for them to go into out of the sun. With no grass at the moment because of the scorched grounds, we make sure they as always have adlib hay provided for them, along with fly repellents and the horses have fly masks on, we have a couple like Coco who gets his off, naughty little boy that he is. The flies are all over them especially in their eyes, which can cause eye infections. Our horses have their eyes gently cleaned every day, to avoid eye problems. When I am driving out and about and see horses out in the field in 30 odd degrees with no tress or shelter and see them standing with their heads down with nowhere to shelter from the sun it stresses me out, as I feel for them, so please take them into consideration in this heat, which looks like this is going to be the norm for our summer months. When we do finally find a new base for my Charity, I will need a lot of hands and muscle to help us move, I will put any updates on Frenchs Care Havens Facebook page. I also need your help finding someone or a business that would sponsor us for some good advertising in return, have a think as you may know someone. We also need a fencing company and a company who does ground work, plus someone in the tree service who can cut and mulch some bushes and broken trees for our laminitics area. If you would like to come and meet our animals and choose one to sponsor that would be nice for you and for the donkey, pony or horse you would be helping, please do contact me if you would like to come along and meet our beautiful rescues. Hadleigh Society: A new talk and a NEW VENUE !

Tales of witches have long held a fascination for many people and, in his talk “Witches in and around Suffolk”, Pip Wright will present many anecdotes. In one, a Philippa Munnings of Hartest was tried for witchcraft in 1694 at Bury St Edmunds, following a row with her landlord. She had predicted “Thy nose shall lie upward in the graveyard before Sunday next”. Unfortunately, this proved to be true and the locals accused her of causing his death by her witchcraft! Pip, a retired teacher from Stowmarket, and author of a number of books, draws most of his tales from Suffolk, including the trial of 117 presumed witches presented to court by Matthew Hopkins, selfappointed Witchfinder General, in 1645. This talk will also mark an important change in the venue used by the Society. This, and future meetings of the Hadleigh Society will now be held at the United Reformed Church, a short hop across the Market Place from the Guildhall, which has been used for many years. The change of venue is due to the increasing popularity of the Society’s meetings and the restricted capacity of the Guildroom. The URC can accommodate over one hundred people in comfortable seating and offers many facilities. We look forward to seeing you there! 8pm Wednesday 19 August United Reformed Church, Market Place.
