Forty years of friendship, inclusion and community spirit This year marks a remarkable milestone for Sudbury’s Avocet Swimming and Social Club, which celebrates its 40th anniversary. A testament to the power of community, inclusion and the joy of swimming together. Founded in September 1986 by dedicated volunteers and parents who recognised the value of social swimming for children and adults with disabilities. Avocet began life at Sudbury’s open‑air pool and the response was immediate. What started as a simple idea quickly grew into a thriving weekly gathering, offering exercise, confidence and connection in equal measure. When the Kingfisher Leisure Centre opened later that year, Avocet found its long‑term home. Every Sunday since, the centre has welcomed the club for an hour of swimming, supported by managers and staff who understand the importance of accessible activity and the social benefits it brings. Some of the original committee members: Steve, Alan and Liz remain at the heart of Avocet today. Their dedication has helped shape a warm, supportive environment where members feel known, valued and understood. With around 60 members currently attending, many have been part of the club for years, forming friendships that extend far beyond the pool.
Avocet’s impact reaches beyond weekly swims. Members have taken part in swimming galas with great success, supported by the NASCH Foundation, which provides guidance and insurance for disability swimming groups. The club also nurtures its social side with summer BBQs, New Year meals, discos and regular meet‑ups, strengthening the sense of belonging that defines Avocet. We also like to support other charities in the local area. Every year members undertake a sponsored walk on Good Friday and this year the Charity we chose to support was Sudbury Sporting Memories. From family history to strange cures
I have been delving into my family history again during these past few weeks to keep me occupied, yet cool in our rather hot summer. As always far more questions than answers. My grandfather was the thirteenth out of fourteen children. Cecil and his brother George were the only boys to survive. There were five more boys, three died within their first year, the other two only lived until they were three. This made me wonder, why didn’t they survive? Was there a genetic disorder? Why did so many children die in the nineteenth century? Some of the common causes of death in the nineteenth century were; Typhoid Fever, Scarlet Fever, Cholera and Tuberculosis. Not so common although evident was Leprosy. Fortunately, now that children are immunised and vaccinated against illnesses such as whooping cough, measles, tetanus and smallpox, it is extremely rare for a child to experience any of these. The cures and treatments for these childhood ailments were handed down for generations back to the early Egyptians and passed on mainly through travellers. My mother was advised by some friendly travellers that we would see regularly as my mother would cycle with me strapped on the back from Rodlet into Watford (This was in 1949). I was very sick with Whooping cough; they advised my mother to cook a mouse, make me eat it and rub my feet with melted lard mixed with garlic. Thankfully, all I was subjected to was the garlic ointment on my feet. So, what other strange cures were our ancestors advised to administer? Don’t continue to read this if you are eating! Suggested cures for Whooping cough, all the following cures were recorded as being administered in Suffolk. Roasted mouse was quite popular. Laying a live fish on the child’s chest, the fish would then take the illness away. It had to remain there until it died, which shouldn’t last too long. If several children in the family were all sick then hair would be cut from the eldest sick child, cut into tiny pieces and immersed in warm milk. The youngest child would drink this cure? Then it was repeated with the other children. In Monk’s Eleigh they would catch a frog and hang it in a net in the chimney. They believed that the frog would remove the infection. Another cure, not quite so revolting was to make the sick child crawl through a slit in the stem of a young Ash tree. Snails were another suggestion, pass a handful of small snails through a child’s hand then hang them on a string and suspend them in the chimney. It was a common practice to use leaches for so many different ailments, however these were applied by a doctor. So, a common cure for gout, flue and a fever was to swallow a small spider and piece of its web that would be placed inside an apple and eaten by the patient. Another alternative was stale ale, mixed with mustard seeds and ground nutmeg. If you suffered from joint pains, then sheep dung placed on the offending joint was supposedly quite beneficial. I think I will stick with paracetamol. Sue Ayres

Plans are now well underway for Sudbury Rotary Clubs’ Christmas Tree Festival to be held in early December at St Gregory’s Church in Sudbury. Details of days and times will shortly be sent to all previous participants. This annual celebration is always a joyful event, bringing magic to the start of the Christmas season. Anyone can book a tree and decorate it as they choose, whether a school, church, local company, voluntary/charity group or private individual. It’s a great way of bringing to the attention of all who visit the festival what you do in our community. The catastrophic earthquakes in Venezuela reduced buildings to rubble within minutes and killed at least 1,700 people, leaving thousands more injured and in need of medical care. In response to the Venezuela Earthquake Appeal, Sudbury Rotarians were on duty on 15 August in North Street. The street collection raised £164.89; with additional donations the total amounted to £431.34 and will be passed on to the Disasters Emergency Committee. Donations by members of the British public will be matched by the UK Government up to the value of £2 million. Sudbury Rotary is grateful to all those who added to the donation boxes at the street collection, to Lipstick and Locks for kindly providing a chair to one of our members and to the kind lady who offered to provide refreshment. September speakers will be David Martin from ‘Go-Start’ on Monday 7; Beth Condie from Parkinsons’ UK Support on 14. The normal business meeting will be held on Monday 21 and on 28 members of Kelvedon Rotary Club will use slides to recount a year of activities in the life of their club. The Gayer-Anderson brothers, Major Robert Gayer-Anderson (1881–1945) and Colonel Thomas Gayer-Anderson (1881–1965), were remarkable figures whose lives combined military service, scholarship, collecting, and a passion for history. Best remembered today for their outstanding collections of art and antiquities, the brothers also played significant roles in the British Army and left a lasting legacy in both Egypt and England. Born in Listowel in Ireland, the brothers spent much of their childhood in England before both going on to pursue military careers. They both trained at Sandhurst and were commissioned into the British Army at the turn of the twentieth century. Their early service took them across the British Empire, where they developed a keen interest in the cultures and histories of the countries in which they served. Following service in WW1, Major Robert Gayer-Anderson remained in Egyptian government service, where he became deeply immersed in the country’s history, archaeology and artistic heritage. He learnt to speak Arabic and was highly respected by Egyptians and Europeans alike. He mixed with the great and good of the British expat community in Cairo, becoming friends with some of the era’s most celebrated figures, including T. E. Lawrence (“Lawrence of Arabia”) and the archaeologist Howard Carter, discoverer of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. Robert’s knowledge of Islamic art and Egyptian antiquities earned him an

international reputation as an authority and collector. One of his most important pieces was the bronze statue of the Goddess Bastet. It dates from the Late Period of ancient Egypt around 600 BC and is now an exhibit at the British Museum and is considered one of the museum’s greatest masterpieces. His dedication to Egypt was recognised by King Farouk I, who in 1942 bestowed on him the honorary title of Pasha, one of the highest civilian distinctions of the time. In 1924, the brothers travelled to the Suffolk village of Lavenham to find a country home for themselves and their widowed mother, with Robert planning to spend summers there away from the heat of Egypt. Captivated by the village’s exceptional medieval architecture, they purchased what is now known as the Great House. They later discovered that the purchase also included the adjoining Little Hall. At first, Little Hall did not appeal to them because its exterior had been pebble dashed. However, once inside, they saw the impressive internal beams and realised the building was historically significant. They decided to make Little Hall their Lavenham home and began a full restoration of the medieval building, a project that took more than ten years. In 1936 they finally moved in and sold the Great House to their friends, the renowned photographer Humphrey Spender and brother, the poet Stephen Spender. This marked the beginning of the brothers’ lasting impact on Little Hall and Lavenham as Thomas (the Colonel) also became involved in campaigning to preserve Lavenham’s array of medieval buildings, thus protecting the historical legacy we still enjoy to this day. The Gayer-Anderson brothers’ lives spanned continents and cultures. As soldiers, scholars, and collectors, they combined military achievement with a lasting commitment to preserving history. Their legacy continues to inspire historians, collectors, and visitors in both Cairo and Lavenham. Volunteers are the lifeblood of The Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding. During term time, when the centre is open, each riding day will have a team of helpers who get the horses and ponies ready for the sessions and support the riders. Their help is invaluable and the centre is always keen to hear from people who want to be involved in this way. But helping with the riding and other equine-led therapy sessions isn’t by any means the full picture. Our maintenance volunteers and those who come to help with specific jobs are just as valued and in this piece we shine the spotlight on corporate community volunteering – a great team-building exercise. Over the summer The Shelley Centre has been fortunate to welcome some teams of insurance workers who are able to volunteer with the charity for a day, with the blessing of their workplace. The enthusiastic group were soon involved in a variety of tasks. These ranged from clearing tree debris from fields, preparing fencing, clearing weeds and planting numerous bulbs that will make up our memorial area in the banks around the riding arena. Writing from the Rectory Near Death Experiences: Signposts of Hope?
Every so often, a topic comes along that captures both the imagination and the heart. Michael Zigarelli’s recent exploration of near-death experiences (NDEs) does just that, inviting us to reflect afresh on life, death and the possibility of God’s gracious presence breaking in at the edges of human experience. Zigarelli begins with a striking observation: for centuries, people across cultures have described remarkably similar experiences when close to death — tunnels of light, a sense of peace, encounters with spiritual beings. Even the Renaissance painter Hieronymus Bosch depicted such scenes 500 years ago. Far from being a modern curiosity, NDEs appear woven through human history. What makes this field especially intriguing is the sheer number of people who report such experiences. And while these accounts don’t prove life after death, they do form a pattern that’s hard to ignore. Many who return from an NDE describe profound transformation: less interest in status or wealth, more compassion, less fear of death, and a renewed desire to live generously. Some even change the entire direction of their lives — atheists becoming pastors, hardened criminals becoming social workers. The most compelling stories, however, are the “veridical” cases: moments when people report details they could not have known while unconscious — a serial number on a machine, a shoe on a hospital roof, or events in another room. These accounts, carefully verified by medical staff, raise thoughtful questions about whether consciousness might continue beyond the body. Of course, there are objections. Some neuroscientists argue these experiences are simply the brain under stress. Others say NDEs reflect cultural expectations. Zigarelli acknowledges these concerns but notes that they don’t fully explain the verified cases, nor the surprising reports of people encountering figures they never expected — including Muslims and atheists who claim to have met Jesus. For Christians, NDEs aren’t Scripture and shouldn’t replace it. But they may be signposts — gentle hints that the God who is light and love is nearer than we think. Zigarelli concludes that while NDEs don’t settle every question, they make belief in an afterlife more reasonable than disbelief. Perhaps, in God’s kindness, these stories are reminders that death is not the end, and that grace often meets us in places we least expect. Revd Andrew

As a summer of sunshine and socialising draws to a close, residents are being urged to ‘Circle September for friendship’ and prioritise their social lives before winter sets in. With social opportunities often dwindling as routines change and the evenings become darker and shorter, Sudbury Oddfellows is encouraging local people to strengthen existing friendships and make new connections ahead of the colder months. To help people achieve this and to mark Friendship Month in September (1-30 September), the group is opening its doors through a programme of free and low-cost taster events. The invitation is backed by a recent Oddfellows survey which found that nearly two-thirds (62%) admit they have lost touch with a good friend because they stopped meeting up in person regularly. Sudbury Oddfellows, part of the Bury St Edmunds and Colchester District Lodge, has over 1100 members across the district and organises regular social events, activities and meetups in the Sudbury area. Helen Patel, Social Organiser of Sudbury Oddfellows, said: “Summer is often full of opportunities to get out, meet people and spend time with friends and family. But as winter approaches, many people find they have fewer social plans and can start to feel isolated. “That’s where groups like ours can help. We provide easy routes to meet other local people.” “We’ve lots of opportunities coming up during Friendship Month, and the friendships formed through groups like ours can have a real and lasting impact on wellbeing throughout the year.” Oddfellows taster events taking place during September include a Friendship, Coffee, Cake and Chatter, starting at 10.30am on Wednesday 2 September at Painters in Sudbury. There is also a Bingo with Fish & Chips Event, starting at 10.30am on Wednesday 16 September at Sudbury Masonic Hall (there is a cost for this event) and a speaker event on Wednesday 30th September at The Masonic Hall. The talk ‘Burlesque, Me and the WI’ will be given by WI President Lindsey Barrell and will start at 10:30am. Dr Anna Machin, evolutionary anthropologist and friend of the Oddfellows, says regular face-to-face contact helps friendships grow stronger, making it important to maintain social connections during the colder months. Anna said: “Friendships need regular contact to thrive. The key is consistency, regularity and proximity. As winter approaches, making time for regular catch-ups can make a significant difference to your wellbeing.” As part of Friendship Month, Dr Machin will also host a free friendship webinar on Tuesday 13 October at 7pm. Welcome from Linda and Kathy, Centre Coordinators What a scorcher!! Some like it hot but this summer has been amazing breaking all the records it will certainly be one to remember like the summer of 1976. On the negative side, our gardens and green spaces are all suffering with the hosepipe ban and drought conditions. Our little courtyard has very few flowers but still needs some care and attention. If you would be interested in helping us out for an hour or so a week, we would be very grateful for someone to come and do some light gardening duties. Please do get in touch or call in for more details. We we have been busy freshening up our rooms over the summer ready to go into Autumn with bright clean and inviting spaces to hire. Thank yous As always we like to thank our wonderful team of Volunteers and Trustees who without their support the Christopher centre would not be able to run as it does. What’s on We have lots going on every week including, Chair Yoga, Otago, Play on Words Play Reading group, Life Drawing, Weight Management groups, The WI, The Christopher Choir, C’ Art Class, AA and NA groups. The Christopher Centre Volunteer Hub has taken a well earned break over the Summer and is now back with new Hub Coordinator Sarah at the helm. If you would like to find out about local volunteer opportunities, call in to the Centre on a Monday between 12pm and 4pm for a chat. We also run the Volunteer Hub Open Afternoon at the Centre on the second Thursday of the month,1.00pm to 3.30pm. Call in and meet local charities and groups searching for volunteers. The Cancer Support Group with Helen Brucher every 4th Tuesday of the month 2.15pm -3.45pm supporting those dealing with cancer and those supporting friends and family. Our Menopause Support Group Facilitated by Nurse/Menopause Specialist Ruth Bescoby. This friendly, informative group will be back on the 3rd September from 7.00pm to 9.00pm. Our gust speaker this month will be Nicola from Dance with Nicola low impact and feel good dance. (wear comfy clothing and shoes) All welcome. The Monday Drop in Group is also a very friendly group, meeting every Monday from 10am-12pm for tea, coffee, cake and 12pm to 2pm for a hot meal. All Welcome. The Christopher Singers – We are recruiting. We are a community minded singing group, one of the many community projects that are part of The Christopher Centre. I am happy to let you know that we have finally secured our new land and in the process of preparing to move, hopefully by the end of this month. We are under pressure and are going as fast as we can, but as people generally know, nothing is always straight forward in life. The new home at the time of writing this is not ready to accommodate our animals, due to all the work and preparation needing doing first, to make it safe for them. So at the moment it is impossible to move until we can make it safe, which we are presently going as fast as we can and are full on doing. Then we have the major task of moving, here is where we need help from the local community, if you have a trailer or van, truck anything that could help us take our belongings over please call me, we need team work and HELP! Also just to let all know, our website is down, because Weebly who we were with have sold squarespace and while doing so they have lost our website, we have been trying for weeks to get it back, but you can never speak to anyone and if you can get them on chat, they just say “we cannot find your details” plus they are in the USA and it looks like all of our website pages have gone! It has been a nightmare, as we have lost everything, even our back up has gone. We still have our Facebook page, but not our lovely website. Another part of the team we are looking for is a website designer, do you know someone or can you help us? Our animals still need lots of daily love and care, so you are welcome to come and give them some TLC alongside our regular volunteers, who do a great job, bless them, as they have all learnt to deal with my tendency towards excessive orderliness and perfection, with the cleanliness around our animals and the best daily care they need and to me they must have.
