Latest community investments is child’s play Playgrounds, a leisure centre upgrade and a children’s library are amongst the community projects set to receive a share of more than £745k from Babergh District Council this month. The awards, including an investment of nearly £500k in Belle Vue Park in Sudbury, are thanks to the latest round of funding from the council’s Community Infrastructure Levy. CIL payments are legally required from developers when building residentials sites across the district. Monies collected are then redistributed by the council to go towards local community projects to ensure they can keep up with housing growth. Belle Vue Play Area Belle Vue Park receives a total of £490k to cover the increased costs of the new toilet block and accessible facilities, plus upgrading the play area to create a more inclusive space for young visitors and complements the council’s plans for a new café. A further £55k will go towards improving the play equipment at Aubrey Drive play area – also in Sudbury – with £76k for improving the play area at the Calais Street recreation ground in Hadleigh. In each case, proposals include upgrading facilities to create more inclusive play equipment that is designed to support children with disabilities, incorporating sensory play features and ground‑level activities as well as features to ensure safe and accessible fun for all. Meanwhile, Hadleigh Leisure Centre receives £101k towards a project to increase the capacity of the fitness suite and repurpose a ground-floor room into a community space – and Great Cornard Library receives £19k to add a children’s library within its existing space to attract younger visitors and their families. Cllr Sallie Davies, Cabinet Member for Heritage, Planning & Infrastructure at Babergh District Council, said: “When housing grows at the rate that it is currently, it is really important that the local community infrastructure can grow at the same pace and CIL funding is one of the ways in which this can be achieved.

40 Years Anniversary
As many Sudbury people may know, The Avocet Club is a local swimming organisation to support those people with disabilities. They will be celebrating their 40th Anniversary this year (July). One person who was there at the initital concept and start of the club in its early days is Alan Cecil. He has been ‘hands on’ and also a member of the small committee group. He quotes the benefits of the club as being ‘A swimming and social club accessible to all and to enhance the quality and enjoyment of life’. Alan and other volunteers meet every week throughout the year and give their time to those people both young and old. Most of the volunteers are qualified life guards. The Avocet Club does not have financial support from government or local council but occasionally received donations from money raising events. This was a small, local initiative which has flourished for 40 years and hopefully will continue to do so with volunteers of the future. A small group of Sudbury Rotarians recently visited Tudor Road School in Sudbury to see the woodland garden which the Club has sponsored. This area is used by the children in Early Years every Friday and was badly in need of refurbishment. A grant from the Rotary Club has enabled new planters to be installed, in which the children will grow herbs and vegetables, and for bark chippings to be laid. Sudbury Rotary Club had supported this project several years ago when the garden was first set up, and the storage box they provided then is still in use. Deputy Head, Emma Ince, said “As some children do not have gardens at home, this area provides a special experience for them”. She then invited some of the children to meet Rotarians and talk about their garden and the plants they planned to grow. Pictured are Emma Ince, Deputy Head, with Dorothy Slatter, Tony Platt and Sue Ayers and some children from the reception class. At the end of June, the annual presidential handover took place, at the home of Rotarian Mike Burch and his wife. Retiring President Sue Ayers welcomed incoming President David Ball to the role and everyone enjoyed a picnic lunch in the sunshine alongside the River Stour. President-elect for the coming year is being shared by Dorothy Slatter and Lesley Ford-Platt. Guest speakers during August include Mark Heselden from Bates Wells and Braithwaite on Monday 3 and, on Monday 10, Sudbury’s former Mayor Andy Welsh will recount some of the walking tours which he and his wife Janet have completed in recent years. Sudbury Rotary meets at Newton Green Golf Club (12 noon for 12.30 pm. start) on the first three Mondays of each month and would be delighted to welcome potential new members, individuals or as corporate members, to become part of this international humanitarian organisation. Visitors, of all ages and backgrounds, are welcome to join us. More details of our meetings, speakers, time and place are on the Club web site (sudburyrotary.com). Hello to all our readers, I hope as always you have been keeping well. As of last month’s news, not knowing if we would have signed for the new land, again here I am writing for August edition and still waiting to know what is happening while I write this, stressed to the hilt is an understatement. In our photo is dear little Coco and Ethel. As well as for all of us in this summer’s heat the animals are also affected by it, so I try to do as much as possible to help them, our animals have 24hour access to all of their shelters which have hay and water inside and is a cool place for them to go into out of the sun. With no grass at the moment because of the scorched grounds, we make sure they as always have adlib hay provided for them, along with fly repellents and the horses have fly masks on, we have a couple like Coco who gets his off, naughty little boy that he is. The flies are all over them especially in their eyes, which can cause eye infections. Our horses have their eyes gently cleaned every day, to avoid eye problems. When I am driving out and about and see horses out in the field in 30 odd degrees with no tress or shelter and see them standing with their heads down with nowhere to shelter from the sun it stresses me out, as I feel for them, so please take them into consideration in this heat, which looks like this is going to be the norm for our summer months. When we do finally find a new base for my Charity, I will need a lot of hands and muscle to help us move, I will put any updates on Frenchs Care Havens Facebook page. I also need your help finding someone or a business that would sponsor us for some good advertising in return, have a think as you may know someone. We also need a fencing company and a company who does ground work, plus someone in the tree service who can cut and mulch some bushes and broken trees for our laminitics area. I never cease to be inspired by discovering the various origins to the words we use and the history behind them. I recently bought a book by Caroline Taggart called ‘Humble Pie and Cold Turkey’ which I found fascinating. I am sharing a selection of these facts with some extra background. Many old houses from the fifteenth and sixteenth century were built with the top story larger than the ground floor, producing an overhang known as a jetty. Just as you get a jetty that sticks out into a harbour and was originally designed to protect it, this is traced back to the French word jeter to throw. So, the defining feature of any jetty is that it juts out from something. Therefore, we have a jet of steam from a boiling kettle, and the thrusting of a jet engine. The expression to describe something, maybe a secret that has been overheard comes from the word eaves the part of a roof that projects at the side of a building, that catches dripping rainwater from the roof. This word eave or to eavesdrop dates back to the ninth century. The person standing underneath could get quite wet whilst listening in to a secret conversation. Shakespeare uses the idea in Richard III, when the king haunted by ghosts on the eve of the Battle of Bosworth, wants to check the loyalty of his troops: ‘Under our tents I’ll play the eavesdropper. To see if any mean to shrink from me’. In the seventeenth and eighteenth century, a smartly dressed gentleman or lady would wear a wig. The Egyptians were the originators of a wig in 3,400 BC; they would shave their heads to keep cool and wear a wig for special occasions. The best quality wigs were made from human hair. Samuel Pepys refused to wear a new wig made from human hair during the plague, as it could have been taken from an unscrupulous wig maker from a victim of the plague so changed to horsehair. Today wigs are still worn in British Law Courts, and some Town Clerks wear as our Town Clerk wears his when it’s appropriate. A wig today can be purchased for between £600 up to £2,642. The saying ‘To pull the wool over somebody’s eyes’, comes from a curly woollen wig being jerked over a person’s eyes, to rob them or lead them astray. The saying ‘To let your hair down’ goes back to the days when all women had long hair, that was kept in a tight bun or chignon. From the Middle Ages until the sixteenth century married women were expected to keep their hair covered under veils, wimples or cotton caps, this was a strict social custom. So, a lady only let her hair down in the privacy of her bedroom. Now the expression applies to everyone meaning to relax and have a good time. As a young nurse in the sixties, I had really long hair, which was very difficult to keep under control beneath my cap; so, I decided when having a morning free prior to a late shift, to have my hair cut. I rashly decided to have a Twiggy haircut. On arriving on the ward at the beginning of my shift the Ward Sister glared at me and ordered me into her office. A junior doctor much admired by the nurses happened to be in there. Sister said, “What on earth have you done to your beautiful hair?” I gave my reason, only to be told that “A woman’s hair is her crowning glory how stupid of you”. The young doctor smiled at me with sympathy and said, “I think Nurse Bennett looks very attractive” Sister glared at him and told him to get out of her office immediately. Those were the days when the ward sister ruled the roost with a rod of iron. At least I had far less hassle with my cap, even though I was very embarrassed at the time. Sue Ayres

News from RDA Shelley The final weeks of the Summer term at The Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding are the ‘show’ weeks. Almost all of the riders participate in one or both of two competitions – Countryside Challenge and Dressage. We are indebted to Mary Thornley who kindly gives her time to judge these classes. Mary is well known as a dressage judge and in the local equestrian world, having The Countryside Challenge includes given a great deal of her time riding through the trees – pictures taken by John Boyle. in recent years to the Pony Club. Countryside Challenge is similar to what some riders will recognise as the Riding Club or Pony Club competition of Handy Pony. In the Shelley Countryside Challenge the arena is set up with a course of obstacles that simulate a trail ride. Riders may take part with their horse led, including with the support of side walkers if required, or unled when in the arena. The aim is to specifically display balance, steering, accuracy technical knowledge and safety. The course includes elements such as opening and going through a gate, posting a letter and crossing a ‘bridge.’ We are very fortunate at Shelley to be able to use the opening a gate element to then leave the arena briefly and ride through an area of trees, where the rider is also given marks for correct position when riding uphill and then downhill. Although in recent years it’s been difficult for the Centre to take horses and riders to external events, some groups are able to take

competitors all the way to the RDA Countryside Challenge National Championships. Following the Countryside Challenge we then have our Dressage Week. In fact neither competition only takes a week as the horses and ponies would get bored doing exactly the same thing for each session of the day and may start to anticipate the tests – which could give Friday’s riders an unfair advantage if the horse has learned the test by then better than the rider or their helpers! This year, due to the hot weather, at time of writing some of the dressage tests are still to be completed. If they choose to wear what they usually wear for their riding sessions, that’s fine as it’s important for them all to feel comfortable. At the end of June we said farewell to our Yard Manager Abi who has decided to move on. Abi brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the centre and always made our horses’ welfare her highest priority. She leaves with our thanks and will be missed by horses, riders and volunteers alike. News from the Hive Community Hub, Sudbury
Hive is pleased to report that more grant funding has been offered by the Suffolk Community Foundation (Private Fund - JA Grantmaking Programme) to meet the cost of re-painting all four of the front entrance doors to the former Church, and also to help meet the cost of having three-phase electricity installed in readiness for future work on the building. Hive is delighted to have this further support from the JA Trustees. The final lunch-time concert at Hive will take place on 11 August when Pauline O’Brien, Mike Thomas and Pat Ling will be our guests. They perform acoustically a variety of songs from the traditional folk, Americana, music hall and other genres, playing guitar, banjo, concertina, Appalachian dulcimer and autoharp. You will hear some of the loveliest music from this trio. Entry is free, but there will be a retiring collection. Evening ticketed concerts continue. On 22 August, Piano a Deux return, (Linda Ang and Robert Stoodley). They say, “Come, join Piano à Deux with Rachmaninoff, Poulenc and Borodin on a journey taking you as far as Australia. Savour exquisite music, fun and fantasy, and even a’ Fiddler on the Roof’.” Surprisingly, Robert and Linda met on a dating website and not through music. They married in 2008 and “Piano À Deux” was formed in 2010. They have performed in the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Finland, Singapore, and the USA. So far, they have recorded four CDs. their début CD ‘Strictly Not Bach’ (2011) was highly praised. Through this, £2,000 was raised for various charities including WorldVision. ‘France Revisited’ includes Onslow’s Op 7 Duo Sonata, his six solo pieces, Debussy’s ‘Petite Suite’ and songs by Poulenc. Their third CD: ‘Porgy, Preludes & Paris’, with their arrangements of music by Gershwin, and their latest CD “France Revisited 2” (released in April 2026), have had glowing reviews. They had standing ovations at their concerts in Finland (Summer 2025) and the USA (April 2026). Another visit to Finland took place in Summer 2026. Sudbury will be delighted to welcome back these outstanding musicians. Their concert will begin at 7pm. Doors open at 6.30pm and there will be a licensed bar. Tickets, priced £15 (£5 for under 16s), will be available from Sudbury Town Hall Tourist Office, Peddars (39 King Street), Friars Clinic (Friars Street) in Sudbury and on the door. There has been a change of date for the September visit of jazz quartet The Djangoliers, who will now be in concert at The Hive on Sunday 13 September, from 7pm. Sudbury bus station set for improvements after council secures £250k funding
Improvements will be made to Sudbury’s bus station after Babergh District Council secured £250k to enhance the travel experience for both passengers and operators. The project aims to create a safe, accessible and modern bus station that welcomes people to the town. Enhancements will be made to existing facilities at the Baberghowned site, in Hamilton Road, to better meet the needs of users. Cllr Deborah Saw, Babergh District Council leader, said: “This is good news for Sudbury. We want to make the bus station a much better experience for residents, visitors and operators. “We are looking at a range of improvements that might be possible within this funding, including to the waiting areas, passenger information, general layout to improve usability, safety and comfort, and toilet facilities. Our objective is to create a more welcoming environment and encourage more bus use.”
Detailed plans will now be developed, after which a work programme will be established to deliver the changes. Babergh made the £250k bid for Bus Service Improvement Plan funding, which is administered by Suffolk County Council. Alongside this, the district and county councils will also carry out a feasibility study to explore longer-term options for the bus station. Cllr Saw said: “The new funding supports improvements which are desperately needed in the short-term. But we do recognise there is a more wide-ranging discussion about what we need from a Sudbury bus station in the longer-term. The feasibility study will cover all options – this could range from reconfiguring the existing site to a complete relocation.” Cllr Patti Mulcahy, Suffolk County Council deputy cabinet member for highways and community infrastructure, said: “I am very happy that the Enhanced Partnership has been able to support Babergh District Council in its efforts to make the current site better for passengers. “The more that can be done to rejuvenate local bus services and make them more attractive for passengers, the better it is for our towns and villages by freeing up road space and tackling congestion.” The bus station investment is one of a series of initiatives for Sudbury. Babergh recently committed funding for a new café and toilets in Belle Vue Park, which is also set to get a new toddler/junior play area with accessible path this year. There are also plans for a new climber, picnic benches and seating in the park - though these are all subject to a forthcoming bid for Community Infrastructure Levy funding. Babergh has also earmarked funding to carry out work to Kingfisher Leisure Centre. Cllr Saw said: “We have been clear about Babergh’s financial challenges, but we are continuing to work with our partners, such as Suffolk County Council and Sudbury Town Council, to put forward a powerful proposition for more investment in the town.”
