The winners of the Stars of Babergh and Mid Suffolk awards have been announced following a night of glamour and celebrations last night. On Thursday 18 October, the ďŹ nalists for the Stars of Babergh and Mid Suffolk awards gathered at St Mary’s Church in Hadleigh for a star-studded event to celebrate their outstanding efforts in the community. The awards received over 150 entries and the church was packed with businesses and individuals who have all played a vital role in making the districts what they are today. Cllr Simon Barrett, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy said: “What a great evening the Stars of Babergh and Mid Suffolk was. Our local residents, volunteers and businesses do such an amazing job in our community and often go unnoticed for their efforts. It may come as a surprise that ‘Will Writing Companies’, ‘Estate Planners’ and ‘Inheritance Tax Planners’ can operate ‘unregulated’, which means that they are not all overseen by an independent body to whom they are accountable. It started with good intentions: In recent years many people have made Wills and set up Trusts with a view to protecting their assets for their family. If set up correctly, a Trust can be a very flexible legal tool to meet a family’s long-term needs. However, many people have been poorly advised by some of these companies and have received a promise that the Trust they have set up will protect all or a significant proportion of their assets from the payment of care fees and Inheritance Tax. Companies made false promises and charged high fees: Customers have been advised to structure their assets in ways which may not achieve the purpose for which they have been created and many have paid more than £4,000 to have Wills prepared and to create some form of a Trust. Universal Wealth Management and other similar companies organised ‘information’ events throughout the country to which carefully selected members of the public were invited. Attendees received a talk about asset management and were encouraged to purchase the company’s products with tempting discounts if they agreed to sign up there and then. Some individuals that have used such services may not yet be aware that many complaints have been made by customers of such companies and that some of these companies are under ongoing criminal investigations by the police. Sudbury Farmers’ Market I believe one of the most important things about farmers’ markets is the relationship that builds between our customers and our stallholders. Our customers become familiar with the products that are available and they are more confident about asking the producer questions about ingredients and about trying to cook different dishes. There is a preconception that farmers’ markets are expensive but these ingredients don’t need to be fussy; they don’t need to be expensive, they are just good quality, local and fresh so that the simplest meals can taste amazing because the ingredients used are real. We love it when new customers come along to the farmers’ markets and they want to know more about the food they are eating. Our Autumn meetings began with a lively and informative talk from writer and organic gardener Val Bourne, ‘ Peonies and Roses – A Marriage Made in Heaven’. She recommended planting roses, floribundas, which flower at the same height as the peonies, to give a level effect of colour. Val particularly prefers the Lactiflora Hybrids as they have a longer flowering period. She went on to dispel the myth that once planted, they cannot be moved, and that October is the perfect time for both planting and moving. She advised that they should not be planted too deeply, as the tubers need to feel the cold, in order to flower well the following summer. As an organic gardener, she chooses roses which are impervious to black spot, among them, David Austin’s Wild Eve’. Our next meeting, the AGM, on 3rd November, will have Rasvan Chisu speaking on ‘Castles and Plants of Transylvania’. Following that, on December 1st, we are having a social coffee and cake Wreath Making morning. We are very pleased to announce that our Celebrity Speaker, on February 16th, will be James Alexander Sinclair with his talk, ‘Dancing through Borders – the stories and plants behind some of James’ favourite gardens’. Tickets will be £10 to members, and non-members £15. These prices include a £2.50 donation to a charity of James’ choice. Tickets are on sale now, and further details can be found on the website. From the Christmas ofďŹ ce party, drinks with friends and the buzz of the family gathering on the big day, December is a time for fun and social interaction. But is it? For those experiencing hearing loss, this can be something of an annual nightmare, causing a variety of communication issues! Imagine if you can, being unable to hear speech clearly because Christmas music is being played in the background or not being able to hear the excitement of children opening presents because they are all talking at once and you cannot separate the sounds clearly. Imagine dreading Christmas dinner on a large table with 15 other people because you won’t be able to hear what is being said around you. These are issues a normal hearing person doesn’t normally even consider. In in six people in the UK have a hearing loss but the number is far smaller for those who have sought professional help from an audiologist such as myself. Hearing aids can make such a difference to someone’s quality of life at this time of year. Hearing aids are so much smaller and discreet than they ever used to be and packed full of amazing features that will help during the festive period.
You may have thought that with so much noise at a party or family dinner, hearing aids would just make things louder, but modern digital hearing aids aren’t simple sound ampliďŹ ers. They are designed to ďŹ lter out all the unwanted noise - like the clanging of dishes in the kitchen or the background music - and help you focus on speech. Features such as directional microphones work to reduce the amount of noise allowed to enter your hearing aids. In noisy environments, like at a Christmas party, the system will work to pick up the least amount of noise. If the noise is located behind you, your directional microphones will adapt to pick up sound from in front of you and dampen noise from behind you. One factor above all is often cited as the reason why our modern politics seems to be unstable, and that is the freeze in wages many have felt since the 2008 financial crash. The argument is made - in my view rightly - that since then living standards for many have at best remained static, fuelling resentment and prompting support for populist leaders and agendas offering simplistic solutions. As the most striking examples of such populism, Trump delivers protectionism; Corbyn promises nationalisation. I believe neither approach offers anything other than a threat to jobs and prosperity, but not long ago such policies would not even have been considered. That they are mainstream again confirms we live in different times, requiring those of us in Government to spell out how we can ensure that our best days are ahead of us, not a thing of the past. Thus, I was delighted to hear the latest earnings figures showing the strongest UK wage growth for almost a decade. Many statistics can feel a little intangible – but better wage packets are anything but! And when you factor in the recent fall in inflation, and unemployment remaining historically low, there is much to be confident about. But it’s the wages news that matters, particularly if it means we may be entering a period of prolonged improvements in pay. To quote the Bank of England’s chief economist Andy Haldane: “there is more compelling evidence of a new dawn breaking for pay growth, albeit with the light filtering through only slowly.” Which brings me to Brexit. It’s perhaps because those who supported Brexit most passionately are driven by concern for sovereignty, and the return of legal powers to Parliament, that in my view too little is made of the most obvious potential upside of leaving the EU. I may have campaigned to Remain, but it seems irrefutable to me that if we both control immigration at more sustainable levels, whilst maintaining the inward investment that drives job creation, we should see further upward pressure on pay for UK workers. That would be a Brexit outcome all should welcome.

Rotary in Sudbury In response to the tsunami and earthquake in Indonesia, Sudbury Rotarians organised street collections during October in Sudbury town centre, so that more shelter boxes can be purchased and sent out to help with the disaster. A total of £1,022.05 was collected. Shelter boxes are provided by Rotary wherever people have been hit by disaster and humanitarian crises around the world. One type of Shelterbox does not fit all and the contents can vary depending on the needs of the families in crisis, but usually contain a tent, cooking equipment, mosquito nets and water purification kits. Each box costs around £600. At any given time ShelterBox Response Teams are on the ground, supporting families to recover after disaster and conflict all over the world. From raising funds to practical support on the ground, Rotary is helping to reach families in desperate need. Sudbury Rotary President, Tony Platt, said “We are incredibly grateful to the people of Sudbury and district for their support of this appeal. All money raised will go direct to help people who have lost everything.” Meetings of the Rotary Community Forum continue to be held every fortnight for an informal gathering lasting no more than an hour. For the third annual Sudbury Memory Walk 168 walkers took to the beautiful Stour Valley Trail to Unite Against Dementia. Walking in memory of those that we love and raising awareness of Dementia. Despite the very wet weather spirits were high and there were lots of smiling faces. Deputy Mayor Robert Spivey and Cllr Margaret Maybury kindly started off each of the walks. There was a great atmosphere with the Phoenix Marchers playing their booming drums to lead out the walkers for the first quarter of a mile of the route. Back at the start/finish the crowd were entertained by the amazing Lisa Day - Vintage Vocalist and the musician of U3A. Robert Spivey Deputy Mayor said: ‘It was a great pleasure to help with this event. Members of my family have been affected by this terrible disease and I know the value of the work that the Dementia charities carry out. The weather wasn’t so good but spirits were high – congratulations to all those involved.’ Cllr Margaret Maybury, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities said: “I was delighted to be at the Memory Walk held last Saturday which highlights the work needed, the commitment undertaken, and the living with, a debilitating and incurable disease for family, friends and sufferers. This event celebrates all areas of life with Dementia and I praise those who carry on regardless. “The weather this year was inclement for the walk but the event was made so enjoyable by all the volunteers, businesses and organisers who provided music and encouragement to lighten the rain.” With over 35 volunteers making the day possible, walkers enjoyed stepping back in time with the world war two memorabilia and reenactors. Tea and cake were plentiful, supplied by the East of England Coop, Care UK and the Bridge Project. Huge thanks goes out to Jerry our community volunteer whose mum Kate was the inspiration for the Sudbury Memory Walk. Jerry did an amazing job engaging with local businesses and support groups to create fantastic goody bags for all that walked that included some wonderful Koning’s apple juice, Eat Natural Bars, Tesco snack pack and Weston Bakery biscuits along with lots of useful information. Jerry says: “Over the last three years I have been saying that I would love to see 1,000 turn up to do the walk putting Sudbury firmly on the map as somewhere where people really do care. I have given myself 10 years to try and achieve this. The weather did have an effect this year but I cannot state how much I was impressed by those that did join in; from a one year old to 88 years young. Such commitment deserves to be rewarded. I really hope this will be another step along the way to making Sudbury a Dementia Friendly Town.” #thememorywalkman A big thank you to everyone who made donations on the day. Our street collection totalled £699.88. It is not too late to donate. You should have seen the yummy selection at our Hintlesham sale last month, all baked and donated by talented supporters. I was only allowed a tiny taste due to my dicky tummy but I did get my usual cup of tea! We were made most welcome by the locals and over £950 was raised for the animals. Our last event of 2018 is our Christmas Fair at the Old School, Long Melford, CO10 9DX. Doors open 10am, Sunday 18th November, get there early before they sell out! Mum and the volunteers have been kept busy with a doggy family after cross breed terrier sisters, Hinge and Bracket arrived. Hinge promptly produced four tiny pups, two have gone to a lovely human family, leaving their siblings, Nut and Bolt to be homed. Mum and Auntie, the inseparable sisters, are also available. They are between two and three years old with lovely personalities, unlike poor old Jack, the Westie cross, who needs an understanding home. He is a bit of a grump but deserves a chance to be happy and loved. Ollie says please keep your pets safe during Halloween and Bonfire night. As a black cat, he is particularly wary of the spooky season and we animals all dread the fireworks around 5th November. That is a time when all pets should be safely tucked up indoors, including Ollie (the Black) Cat and me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.

New Anglia Growth Hub grant helps accelerate Sudbury silk weaving company’s export drive Sudbury-based Gainsborough Silk Weaving Company, one of the UK’s longest operating silk mills and Royal Warrant holder, has been launched a number of new ‘collections’ for export as result of a successful application for part funding of a new loom through New Anglia Growth Hub. Competition has intensified at the less expensive end of the market where high quality polyesters are now being produced to rival the look and feel of top quality silk. Gainsborough designs, dyes and weaves a broad range of natural silk yarns to create premium quality furnishing fabrics. Its core customers are interior designers commissioned to work on historical homes, luxury hotels, palaces, embassies, the hospitality industry and the homes of the super-rich. But, to grow its business, Gainsborough recognised the need to diversify into markets looking for a less expensive silk product. Managing director, Emerson Roberts, explained, “It was imperative for our future that we re-engaged with the interior design sector who had turned to suppliers of cheaper silks and polyesters. The business opportunity for our new ‘collections’ lies in places where British design and craftsmanship are highly valued, such as the US, Middle East, Japan and Russia. “To make the most of this opportunity, we needed to purchase a new automated loom to produce the silk in higher volumes than the more traditional bespoke silk woven on mechanical looms.” The cost of the second-hand Dornier loom was over £60,000. Plus, Gainsborough also had to buy the Bonas Jacquard Harness that feeds the designs to the loom which was another £60,000, pay a £10,000 delivery and installation charge and invest £32,500 to upgrade the dye house. With the help and support of a New Anglia Growth Hub adviser, Emerson submitted an application for part-funding and was successful in receiving a 20% grant of £32,000 from the Growing Business Fund. The expansion of the business resulted in an additional six new roles being created. As planned, Gainsborough was able to weave a large volume of fabric to export to the US and has developed three new collections – Sir John Soane’s, House Medici and The Bunny Gets It. Emerson summarised, “The Growth Hub provided fantastic support to our business. It helped us secure a good proportion of the financing needed to take this business into the new markets we want to exploit.” Nigel Best, New Anglia Growth Hub Manager, said, “The challenge Gainsborough faced in moving into a new market sector is one we are familiar with and recognise the need for investment. Having someone at the helm with a good track record, clear plans and a credible vision for the future really does help the application. I am glad that we were able to assist Gainsborough in its bid to secure silk weaving in Sudbury for many years to come.” Gainsborough was founded in 1903 and is a preferred supplier of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. It also holds a Royal Warrant from HM The Queen. Its orders are often bespoke and unique; the fabrics are typically used for walling, curtains and upholstery, as well as linings on luxury cars and luggage. A silk item woven at the Sudbury mill has featured in many Royal Weddings including the upholstery in the Ascot Landau carriage used by Harry and Meghan at their wedding earlier this year. National Trust Melford Hall invites you Following on from our previous very successful Open Days, we will be holding another one in November. We are still looking to recruit more volunteer room guides, and would like to give you the opportunity of meeting and chatting with some of the other volunteer room guides, as well as having a look around the Hall. You will be able to hear first hand from other volunteers as to what is entailed in the role as well as what they have gained out of it. If you have some spare time on your hands, are perhaps a little lonely, or want to meet people and chat, make new friends and have new experiences, then why not come along and find out more. Our team are a very friendly group, of all ages and backgrounds. They spend what time they are able to commit in a beautiful environment, surrounded by fine furniture, art and objects. The Hall is open from Wednesday to Sunday, plus Bank Holidays, 1.00-5.00pm, March to October. The role will involve talking to our visitors, answering any of their questions and sharing the stories of this wonderful family home. Don’t worry, there will be as much help and guidance as you feel you need so you can go at your own pace. Although a National Trust property you do not need to be a member to volunteer. The Phoenix Collective The Phoenix Collective are an inclusive, fun and friendly drama and creative arts opportunity who meet weekly in Sudbury at the Jetty at the Quay Theatre. The group are currently working on a multi sensory performance of The Snow Queen which will take place in December. Members have been working together through a series of games, workshops and creative activities to devise the play which promises to be a feast for all of the senses, incorporating music, dance, theatre and audience engagement. The Phoenix Collective have capacity within the team to welcome new members. Experience is not essential, just an interest in having a go and working as part of a team; active support workers are also welcome! We work with individuals to develop creativity, teamwork and communication skills through the mediums of theatre and art. Jodie Woodward who is playing the role of the Snow Queen is embracing the opportunity, “I’m working on my dance moves at home and I am excited about playing the part of the Snow Queen. I like coming to Phoenix Collective because we get to work together with friends to make a play and we all get to have a say in it.”

Stoke-by-Nayland win the Thornton Cup Plate On Sunday the 7th of October Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club played the final of the Thornton Cup Plate at The Rayleigh Club, near Hullbridge, against Brentwood Golf Club. A perfect day for golf greeted the players with bright blue skies and little wind. The Thornton Cup is for the best golfers at the club and despite this being the plate competition, lots of good golf & golfers were on show from both teams of ten players. The plate completion is a straight 18 holes singles match play. First out was Alex English who managed to halve the match against his opponent. The next 3 matches, featuring Louis Freeman, Ian Carter and Scott Brace, were all lost and with 5 of the next 6 matches all being in the balance the match looked like it was going to go to Brentwood. Callum Hemsby won his match well (4 & 3) but with Richard Cross losing game number seven on the seventeenth, the match hung on the outcome of game number six, being played by Sam Wardle. Sam (handicap 6) had been drawn again one of Brentwood best players (handicap +1) but despite this had remained in contention all of the way to the seventeenth tee. Here Sam was trailing by 1 hole but a long putt for a birdie won him the hole to level the game. Another birdie on the 18th gave him the win and the decisive point. Games eight and nine were won by Tom Everett and Paul Lankester leaving the two teams tied on 4½ points each. What seemed unlikely an hour earlier, the match hinged on game ten being played by Gerald Collins. With a solid par on the 16th to level the score, Gerald just needed to keep his nerve. A pair of pars on the 17th meant it now hinged on the score on the 18th hole. Unfortunately, the Brentwood player hit his drive into the hedge on the right of the fairway meaning that once the search did not find his ball he had to play his provisional ball. Gerald hit his second shot into the heart of the green which, once the Brentwood player had failed to hole his chip, gave him 2 putts for the win which were conceded. An exciting finish to a good game which was enjoyed by players, caddies and spectators. At the prize giving, team Captain Dean Brace thanked all involved, especially its right hand man, Mark Freeman, for all their hard work & dedication.

Earlier this month the Stoke-by-Nayland Jubilee Cup team played and won the ďŹ nal of the Jubilee Cup to retain the trophy they won last year. This year the ďŹ nal was against Warley Park GC (near Brentwood) & was held at the neutral venue of Crondon Park GC near Stock The team is 6 players playing scratch singles and 6 playing nett doubles better ball. The ďŹ rst 3 singles players, Dean Brace, Kevan Priestland, & Tim Dickens all won their matches with Tim winning 7 & 6 in impressive style. Of the next 3 players, Trevor Warren managed a draw but the next 2 players, Richard Fryer and Byron Long also both won to make the match out of reach for Warley Park. Even though the stoke pairs lost the ďŹ rst 2 of the 3 matches, they came home comfortable winners 6½ to 2½. Byron Long, the anchor man in the singles, was also second in the order of merit with 6 wins out of 7. Congratulations to Chris Williamson & his team for successfully defending their title. On Sunday the 21st of October a very good ďŹ eld competed for the Hunter Guide Dog mixed Greensome Trophy on the Gainsborough course, which was in superb condition. The players enjoyed beautiful weather with glorious sunshine and even a bit of warmth - most unusual for the tail end of October. Congratulations to Jo Little and Ian Benson with an extremely creditable 43 points, beating the Lesley and Barry Hitchcock pairing by a couple of points. An excellent 2 course meal of a carvery followed by steam pudding ďŹ nished off an extremely enjoyable day when some valuable funds were raised for Guide Dogs for the Blind.
