Sudbury Dramatic Society are delighted to announce plans to return to the The Quay Theatre in July. Last seen on stage at the Quay in March 2020, SDS are presenting a double bill of two contrasting one-act plays. These have been rehearsed online and at suitably social-distanced rehearsals and will be on at the theatre from Wednesday 7th to Saturday 10th July at 7.30pm • Can’t Stand Up for Falling Down by Richard Cameron, directed by Helen Arbon, is the powerful story of three women whose lives are linked by their different relationships with the same abusive man. Lynette, Jody and Ruby must break the cycle, but how? • The Last Bread Pudding by Nick Warburton, directed by Malcolm Hollister, is a clever and comical look at the committee meeting of an amateur drama group who are meeting to discuss a new play. They say that art reflects life, and this piece aims to prove it with all of the dramatic cliches in the script reflected in the playing out of real life events. Andy Edgecome set out on April 1st to walk 100 miles in Long Melford by April 30th, in aid of a charity which helps save babies lives. You may never have heard of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) but if you are one of the 5,500 pregnant women in the UK who every year are diagnosed with it, you will never forget it, as it can cause premature birth and at 14:55 the worst stillbirth. On her walks, pushing a buggy full of soft toys, she met many people in the village, who have been interested to learn about the condition, the main symptom being itching, especially on hands and feet and worse at L to R, my friend Jean Hill, Kellie O’Mahony with Henry aged 3, me with night. Thanks to their generosity, cuddly friends, Lynda Badger with also of friends, family, neighbours Freddie aged 1. and strangers, she will have raised over £2000 for ICP Support in their 30th anniversary year. At least 40% will go towards research to try and find causes and treatments. At the moment constant monitoring of bile acids and early induction are the only way to avoid disasters. The driver for us to move was due to our recent growth, and the opportunity to expand and modernise our service offering so that we can put our students at the centre of our activities at all times. The Clubhouse at AFC Sudbury will provide the ideal facilities for our staff, volunteers and students to not only run, but expand on our services. These include food and drink provisions to support football related activities, our popular lunch delivery services, local events, the dementia café, and pottery painting. By working together with AFC Sudbury, this will enable them to focus on and expand their excellent football training provision. We will also cultivate the ‘triangle’, an unused area of land at King’s Marsh, into a classroom site and allotment for fresh herbs and vegetables, and provide a refreshment kiosk for users of the Valley Trail. These expansion plans will require more volunteers, particularly those with a catering background, and we are therefore welcoming enquiries from people who would like to contribute their time to an extremely worthwhile cause.

Orchard Barn News http://www.orchardbarn.org.uk Our project to reinstate the 1580s Long House here at Orchard Barn is at last making good progress, now that Covid restrictions have allowed us to continue work on the timber frame. We are delighted that some of the original 500 year old timbers could be repaired, and these will be used in the build, along with new timbers cut from local trees. The wooden frame is made of green (unseasoned) oak and fits together using mortise and tenon joints which are secured by seasoned oak pegs instead of nails.

Medals Going Home
I have already been in the media with stories in most of the national newspapers, and appearances on TV, BBC Look East/West and Good Morning Britain, and radio, Radio Cambridgeshire, Heart local and Heart National. I would like to draw your attention to a medal which I am just about to return to the family. I bought this medal on eBay around 3 weeks ago. It was awarded to a Harry Rising. Using the details on the medal I managed to build a family tree for Harry but instead of going back in time I came forward to trace living relatives. I contacted Harry’s great granddaughter and she is delighted to be receiving it back into the family to be passed on to future generations. I am also hoping to connect together some of Harry’s living relatives that I have contacted. Hopefully the new distant family relations will be able to share some stories! The great thing about this medal is the story that goes with it. Whilst using Ancestry I found Harry’s British Army World War 1 Service Record. In it I found a handwritten note from Harry describing how he was shot on the battlefield. He says that he was hit in the chest and the bullet went straight through and out his back. He describes moments of losing consciousness as he waited to be rescued. Amazingly, he survived. Harry was born in Long Melford in Suffolk which is not too far from where I live in Ipswich, but the family it is being returned to live in Whitstable, Kent. Harry also spent time in Manchester and Edmonton, North London before his death in Bromley in 1939. I used to live in Orpington and work in Bromley so that is another connection! Investment helps deliver Sudbury Vision The vision for Sudbury took another step forward this week as contracts exchanged on the sale of Belle Vue House and the northern part of the old swimming pool site. The successful bid by Churchill Retirement Living will see the renovation of Belle Vue House and conversion back into private accommodation while part of the old swimming pool site will be developed as a collection of 46 self-contained retirement living apartments with communal facilities.

There was another street collection for Rotary charities in May. The town was very quiet with few people around and donations on the day were less than might have been hoped for, but the £132.24 collected will be added to the amounts to be shared between The Kernos Centre and St Nicholas Hospice. More street collections are planned for the future: on Saturdays 12 June and 17 July when it is hoped that, with sunshine and more freedom of movement, Sudbury will be back to its usual busy activity and Sudbury charities will benefit from the generosity of local residents. Sudbury Rotary is part of a worldwide organisation: on the international front, Rotary Foundation has awarded £5.67 million for 319 COVID-19 disaster response grants and £17.3 million for 317 Covid-19 global grants to support coronavirus response.

At that event, the handover between current President Sandra Armitage and incoming President Gloria Woods will take place. Gloria has already announced her plans for the year ahead, which include a changed arrangement for meetings in line with a recent survey taken of Club members. Instead of meeting every Monday for lunch at The Mill Hotel, members will have the opportunity to meet twice each month for lunch, with a presentation from a visiting speaker or a Club member. On the second Monday each month the usual Business Meeting will happen via Zoom, which means those who wish can access this from the comfort of their own homes. In the past, fewer members attended the monthly business meetings over lunch, but Zoom business meetings have been much better attended!

With summer weather finally arriving, and Covid restrictions easing, Sudbury Rotary members are looking forward to finally being able to meet again face-to-face. A Garden Picnic will take place at a house alongside the River Stour on Monday, 28 June.

Sudbury Rotary Club’s international support includes funding for the education of two primary children in East Meru, Tanzania, and the numerous, small grants it makes through Lend With Care. In the first three months of 2021, loans were made to support an arts and handicraft project in Peru, farming groups in Pakistan, Cambodia and Malawi and a shop in Cambodia. The Sudbury Club has so far helped 371 entrepreneurs, 1,032 family members and created 240 jobs. It is hoped shortly to set up a -pop-up’ shop within Sudbury town centre and invite other groups and individuals to meet Rotarians and share with us your ideas for projects which could be taken forward to benefit the town, in the hope that Rotarians might be able to help with at least some of these. So please look out for the giant Rotary banner to find out which premises we will be in!

Essex & Suffolk Businesses set to Showcase Allotment Garden at the RHS Hampton Court Garden Festival Perrywood Garden Centre is supporting Suffolk based designer and author Lucy Hutchings with her edible allotment garden. It’s an exciting design that will be brought to life at the RHS Hampton Court Garden Festival in July. The plants, including chillies, heirloom tomatoes and edible flowers like nasturtium, are being grown and nurtured in the production nursery at Perrywood Tiptree. After the show, the garden will be carefully moved and rebuilt at Perrywood Sudbury, allowing visitors to the garden centre a unique opportunity to view and enjoy Lucy’s inspiring space. Lucy is well known as Instagram gardening sensation She Grows Veg. Her new book ‘Get up and Grow’ has just been published and inspires the allotment garden design. Her aim was to display how a small space can supply a surprising amount of edible produce and be a beautiful place to spend time in. The Plans for Plants illustrations show Lucy’s innovative and unusual means of growing fruit, vegetable and edible flowers. For example, on arches and in glass cupboards! The ‘Get up and Grow’ garden will be in the RHS Community Allotment category, which will celebrate the best of community gardening. It will feature many allotment-style plots full of delicious vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers. Communication Manager Louise Smith says, “Our theme this year is ‘Get Growing’. We want to help all those new lockdown gardeners to keep planting and enjoying their outdoor spaces. We love showing our customers how to create something a little bit different. Bringing the whole garden back to display at Perrywood Sudbury will allow a greater number of people to get up close and reconsider their own gardens and growing spaces.”

Hello from Sudbury Library Well, another month goes by and we are gradually reintroducing more services and welcoming you back into our buildings. Our senior team is working hard to make sure we all play by the rules and keep our activities and services as safe as we possibly can. You can now come in to browse the bookshelves and use a computer (as long as you book it). We are currently working towards having some of our group activities running again and will update our social media pages and website when things are in place.We still have restricted opening hours and cannot do all the things we normally do, but things are returning to some sort of normality. We have an Elmer celebration running from 29th May – 12th June. There will be Elmer bags available for £2.00 each from the library and there will be a large display in the children’s library for you to come and admire! Please bear in mind that current legislation requires all customers entering the building to wear a face-covering and fill in test and trace details (or use the NHS app to scan our QR code). There will be someone on the door to help if you are unsure about anything. Our current opening hours are Monday-Saturday 10am till 1pm and 2.30pm till 4.30pm. Our telephone number is 01787 321595. The Ex-Mayor writes... As this will be my final report in the Sudbury & Long Melford magazine as the Mayor of Sudbury, I would like to look back and share with you the last 23 years or so that I have been involved in local Politics. I can recall when I first stood in a town by-election in the North Ward of Sudbury in the late 1990s, we didn’t have all the fringe Parties that we have today. There were just the 3 main parties standing, the Conservatives, LibDems and myself as the Labour candidate. I lost by one vote to the Conservative candidate and I can recall the LibDem candidate saying to me: ‘that if he had thought there would be only one vote in it he would have voted for me himself’. So that’s where it all started, after I had spent most of my working life as a Senior Shop Steward representing people in Delphi - or as it was known when I joined the company in 1963 - CAV. In the 20 odd years in local politics I have represented the Town at County twice and District twice and for the Town throughout that time on and off. When I first got involved I never dreamed that I would be the Mayor, let alone three times, I thought that was for others who enjoyed dressing up, but I took to it like fish to water; my family were brilliant helping out at my monthly coffee mornings, making cakes, biscuits, bread puddings etc. It was also a great opportunity to meet people, I was able to hold various functions & dances all for the purpose of supporting local charities. This year has been so different, not a single coffee morning or function of any kind but still able to support some local charities, but I have enjoyed chairing the Town Council this year with such a variety of people and political opinion, but with one aim in mind, representing the people of Sudbury. We have two new County Councillors representing Sudbury as a result of the retirement of myself and Colin Spence. Jessie Carter was elected to represent the South & North of Sudbury the first time a member of the Green party has represented this part of Sudbury. Philip Faircloth-Mutton Conservative was elected to represent Sudbury East & Waldingfield. In both cases there were five candidates, I wonder what the results would have been if we had proportionate representation. Enough of politics. Sue Ayers was elected as the Mayor for 2021/22 with Ellen Murphy as her Deputy, this is the third occasion that Sue has been elected as Mayor and I wish her and Ellen all the best, I look forward to working with them both in what I am sure will be a good partnership. Isn’t it great to have the pubs, restaurants and cafe’s open again although with certain restrictions, being able to give friends and family a hug again without falling foul of the law, barbecues back on the menu (weather permitting of course) and getting away for a few days. Let’s all hope that the next stage of recovery continues without incident so we can get back to ‘normality’. Hanging basket tips
Late spring to early summer (once the frosts are long gone), is the best time to prepare your hanging baskets, planted containers and summer borders using summer bedding plants. Getting your basket or container prepared is easy; choose the plants - once you have decided on a colour theme, pick at least one (or more if there is room) bush plant to feature in the centre such as an upright geranium, then at least three trailing plants such as fuchsia, begonia or petunia to place around the outside edge, you could use a foliage plant such as ivy. Preferably use a good quality peat-free compost and it is a good idea to arrange them in their pots before planting them into the compost. To help get the most out of your summer bedding plants, there are three top tips on keeping them looking good. 1.
Water – during hot spells, water generously daily. It is surprising how much water is needed to reach the roots – one light rain shower will not be enough.
2.
Feed - in order to guarantee the best results you will have to feed your plants regularly throughout summer. Most compost for bedding will already contain a limited amount of fertiliser but after a few weeks they will need a top-up.
3.
Deadhead - as the flowers of bedding plants fade it is important to deadhead by pinching out the old flowers. This will encourage new ones to grow. If flowers are left to go to seed then the plant’s job is done and it will stop producing anymore!

June’s Advice Column I’ve been living in my privately rented flat for years. I generally have a good relationship with my landlord, but I just can’t get them to carry out various repairs that have built up. How can I get them to act - and what exactly do they have to do? This must be a very frustrating situation. The law states that your landlord must provide accommodation that is safe, healthy and free from things that could cause serious harm. You don’t say exactly what repairs are needed. If you have problems such as electrical wiring that you think might be faulty, or there’s damp, or an infestation by pests, the landlord has a legal obligation to put things right. Landlords are also responsible for the maintenance of the general structure, and fittings such as boilers and radiators; basins, baths and toilets; and the drains. The first step is to contact your landlord again, in writing. Include photographs of the problems. Keep a record of all communications and evidence relating to the disrepair. If that doesn’t prompt any action, the housing advisers at Citizens Advice can help with next steps. These could include contacting your local council (who will have dedicated officers for dealing with disrepair in private rented properties) or asking for a visit by the environmental health team. Tenants can take their landlords to court to force them to carry out repairs. However, it’s worth getting some advice and thinking carefully before embarking on this route.
