Not Superheroes...Just Volunteers! Community First Responders (CFR’s) are not a new phenomena, some of us in Sudbury have been around for 12 years. However, many people in the street and even those who have had us arrive at their front door with our enormous bags are not exactly sure of our role. So, who are we? What do we do? And why do we do it? Firstly, let’s be clear....we are not Superheroes. We are your neighbours. We do not have a ‘Batcape’, but we do wear ‘hi vis’ jackets. We do not have super powers, but ZH GR FDUU\ DQG XVH D GHÂżEULOODWRU RU $(' Âą $XWRPDWHG ([WHUQDO 'HÂżEULOODWRU :H FDQQRW VDYH WKH :RUOG EXW ZH can save a life! We are local people from all walks of life, aged from 21 to 68, who have chosen to give up some of our free time to volunteer as Community Responders for the Ambulance Service. We have all heard about the pressures on ambulance personnel to meet time targets and in a rural community where our nearest hospital is 15 minutes away on blue lights, it is frequently impossible for them to arrive in under 8 minutes. And that is where we step in with our kit bags and training, to offer reassurance and emergency First Aid treatment, record observations and monitor the casualty until the ambulance arrives. In our day to day existence some of us have a medical background; Paediatric Physiotherapist, Nursing Assistant, Principal of a First Aid Unit, but others work in varied occupations such as Production Supervisor, 3ULPDU\ 7HDFKHU DQG (PHUJHQF\ 3ODQQLQJ &RQVXOWDQW Some medical knowledge and experience can be KHOSIXO EXW IXOO WUDLQLQJ LV JLYHQ VR LW LV GHÂżQLWHO\ QRW

a requirement. It is far more important to be the sort of person who can deal with the unexpected, be adaptable, not panic, communicate well, be willing to learn and follow training protocols. This may explain the varied hobbies and interests we all have including: astronomy, gardening, kayaking, dog walking, running, Zumba, church and faith based activities, reading, Italian, Scouts, Royal British Legion, swimming and other voluntary groups and of course, our families. So we are a busy bunch but try to buy out a little time from other things to give something back to our community, at a time when they need us most. We have a monthly training meeting to keep our skills in good working order and up to date. We are also required to take an annual assessment in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and other First Aid protocols. In between times, we offer as much or as little time as we have free, to be on call to the (PHUJHQF\ URRP RI (($67 (DVW RI (QJODQG Ambulance Service NHS Trust). We are supplied with a special radio for contact and a mobile phone, along ZLWK WKH )LUVW $LG NLW DQG GHÂżEULOODWRU :H XVH RXU RZQ vehicles and pay our own petrol expenses. But we do get that nifty ‘hi vis’ jacket! We also have a brilliant back up team who organise rotas and fund raising events and support any public First Aid demonstrations we may organise. So why would we bother to do all this at our own expense and in our own time? Well, it’s true that some of us just can’t resist a challenge and others are FRQYLQFHG WKDW Ă€XRUHVFHQW \HOORZ ORRNV JRRG ZLWK WKHLU

skin tone, but for all of us in a recent survey, the number one motivation was the desire to help and support people at what may well be the worst moment of their lives. We feel a huge sense of satisfaction in being there to offer assistance and comfort and sometimes...to save a life. As time has passed by our members have changed. Some have remained clocking up the years, others have gone on to other things or moved away. Several have changed career and entered the ambulance service. What about you? A Guide to Natural Feeding: Part 1 Dogs should be fed a biologically appropriate diet Every creature on earth must consume the diet that is biologically most appropriate to eat, otherwise it will get ill and may even die. For the first 4 million years of dogs’ existence on earth they certainly didn’t eat canned food or kibble. Four million years? Yes, that’s how long grey wolves have been around, Wolves (canis lupus), coyotes (canis latrans), and domestic dogs (canis familiaris) are closely-related species. All three can interbreed and produce viable, fertile offspring. Through DNA analysis, scientists have established that the wolf is the ancestor of the dog. When wolves were domesticated (around 8,000–20,000 years ago), humans changed their outer appearance and behaviours through breeding, but not their internal organs or digestive systems. In the wild, dogs eat prey and not much else Dogs are carnivores. True, they can and do eat vegetable matter, but anatomically they are designed to catch, kill and eat prey. As with other predatory mammals, they have powerful muscles relative to their size, fused wrist bones and a cardiovascular system that supports both sprinting and endurance. And a quick look inside their mouth is all it takes to understand why they are really much closer to being carnivores than omnivores. Dogs have five types of teeth, each designed to perform different and precise functions: fang teeth to catch and kill prey and to tear off meat; front teeth to scrape meat off bones; small incisors to grab and hold; large incisors that work like scissors to cut sinews and muscles; and molars to crush bones. None of these teeth, are capable of grinding food. Leave dogs to their own devices and they will eat small birds and beasts (rabbits, mice, squirrels) and a share of larger prey (sheep, deer, boar) If your beloved pet ran off today, he or she would not be found grazing the wheat fields, but chasing the rabbits. What’s more, they would eat the whole animal, including its bones. Canine digestion is nothing like human digestion Dogs have no digestive enzymes in their saliva (unlike humans) and very large, expandable stomachs, not to mention indescribably strong stomach acids (strong enough to burn your fingers). Their digestive system is designed so that they can tear off chunks of raw meat, crunch up raw bones and swallow the lot whole. The lack of digestive enzymes in their saliva and their inability to move their jaws from side to side (necessary to grinding food) is why they gulp everything down. How long have you been the current Pastor? Coming up to four years Tell us about yourself? I’m originally from the midlands and after ten years of youth work in churches around East Anglia I trained at Spurgeon’s College in London to be a Baptist pastor. I took a gap-year in Thailand when I was 18, working with churches, schools and development projects which was incredibly formative. That’s when I first felt God’s call to become a pastor, but it took another ten years to finally go to Bible college and train. I’m married with two children, and Sudbury is a wonderful place to call home. We particularly love walking, running, and kaiaking along the river - but not all at the same time! For readers who don’t know, where is Sudbury Baptist Church located? Our building is located on Church street, next door to St Gregorys Primary school. Tell us what a typical service looks like? Our gatherings at SBC are relaxed and family orientated. We sing, pray, read the Bible together and spend time in worship. We don’t pretend to get everything right and we find that we are learning more and more about life, each other and God’s love for us as we journey together. We have children and young people’s sessions that run on Sunday mornings too, run by volunteers who are DBS checked and have been through relevant training. Can anybody attend or do you have to be a member? Everyone is welcome. Do you offer any outreach services? We run a Renew Wellbeing cafe on Thursday mornings from 10-12. It’s a safe, shared space where the stigma of mental uneasiness and anxiety is taken away, and we can be honest. Half way through the session there is an opportunity to pray, but no pressure to do so. Throughout the year we run Messy Church, where families can come along to church on a Saturday afternoon, take part in activities together, sing songs, have fun and eat dinner, all for free! A good number of us at Sudbury baptist Church are involved in the town’s interchurch Street Pastor project. If you’re out in town on Saturday nights watch out for us in big yellow coats! Check out our website for more information and more opportunities. As a church family we seek to be outward looking and not inward looking. We hope that when we gather as a church, that we are a welcoming community and a comfortable place for people to bring friends and family. For people who are interested in knowing more about the Christian faith, do you run courses? We have run the Alpha course in the recent past, and plan to again. However, I have found that coming along to gathered worship on Sunday mornings is the best way to get to know God and his ways. We hope that SBC is a welcoming place where people can ask questions and share how they feel. What are the benefits of being part of a church community? Knowing that you are part of something incredibly exciting! A part of God’s plan to bless the world around us. Learning to live honestly in the reality that life can be hard for many of us with trauma and tough times to journey through - but also trusting that God is with us and will lead us through the other side. Sudbury & District Citizens Advice June Advice Column I’m having problems with a builder I employed to build a kitchen extension to our house. The foundations are laid, and he’s knocked through the back wall - the back of our house is now a tarpaulin sheet. We paid an initial deposit upfront, and then two further amounts in cash for materials. He’s now asked for more money - but I’d like to see more work done ďŹ rst. We had a bit of a row, and he hasn’t turned up for the last two days. What should I do next? There are various things you can do. The Citizens Advice consumer service (0345 04 05 06) is a good ďŹ rst port of call. If you think your relationship with the builder can be salvaged and you’d like him to ďŹ nish the work, you can try to sit down with him and agree - in writing - a schedule of works and payments you’re both happy with. This written contract, if you don’t have one already, should cover exactly what you’re paying for and everything you’ve agreed on, like timings, payments, who will pay for materials and subcontractors. If you pay any future instalments by credit card rather than cash you’ll also beneďŹ t from extra protection from the card provider. It’s a good idea to take photos as the work progresses and keep copies of your communications and any receipts. If you feel the situation with that trader can’t continue you can complain in writing to him or his company and ask for some money back. If you believe the work is substandard you can report problems to Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice consumer service. If he’s a member of a trade association they also might be able to help. If that doesn’t work, look for an approved alternative dispute resolution (ADR) scheme - this is an independent third party who can help you to reach a compromise. The trader may already be a member of a scheme. If not, they should provide you with the name of a certiďŹ ed scheme and say if they are willing to use it. Moving in 2019? Don’t pay twice for conveyancing

When you move home, selling and buying property, you will need to employ the services of a conveyancing solicitor to deal with the legal aspects of the transaction, for which there is a legal fee. Paying twice when transactions fall-through What many home movers don’t realise is that if your transaction falls-through, which happens for many reasons and with increasing frequency, you will still be charged by your conveyancing solicitor for the legal work undertaken up to the point the transaction fell-through. This means, you pay legal fees to your conveyancing solicitor for the transaction that fell-through and then have to pay them again for the legal work on the next transaction, which will hopefully be a successful one that goes through to ‘completion’. You essentially pay for your conveyancing twice. How common is it for property transactions to fall-through? Rightmove reports that nearly 30% of property transactions fell-through in 2018*, which is significantly more common than most people realise. Some commentators also believe the current economic uncertainty and slow property market may cause this percentage to increase as buyers and sellers become more cautious and risk-averse, making them more likely to pull-out of a deal. How to avoid paying twice for conveyancing The only way to protect yourself from the risk of paying twice for your conveyancing is to instruct a no sale, no fee conveyancing solicitor. It is sometimes said that we have a ‘crisis’ in our politics. Let’s be clear, our world of Westminster is in an extraordinary frenzy over one big issue. But we should never lose sight of the true picture away from the bubble where there is much to be positive about. In particular, the latest figures on jobs would have made many Governments over the years scream with envy. We now have the lowest unemployment – just 3.8% of the population – since 1974. This now means that the official count of jobless people has not been lower in my entire lifetime. Since 1974 we have had: a devaluation crisis and seeking support from the IMF to bail out our nation’s finances; the winter of discontent; deep and dark recessions under Conservative Governments and the biggest of all under Labour in 2008; we have had John Major’s Black Wednesday and Gordon Brown’s credit crunch. In all those years unemployment has generally been one of the biggest issues facing any Government. And today, amidst what is unquestionably an existential political crisis for my party, we oversee record low joblessness. But in addition, record numbers of women in work; 1 million more disabled people in work since 2010; and youth unemployment down by half a million in the same period. Of course, the job for any Government is to avoid complacency and recognise that, whilst wages are now rising at the fastest rate since the crash, many still feel the pinch. We have also had high profile announcements that major factories are to close in South Suffolk – Delphi in Sudbury and Philips Avent in Glemsford being the most important examples. That said, in evidence to the South Suffolk Taskforce that I set up in response to these closures, the most common concern we have heard from local firms has been difficulty in recruiting. We must do everything possible, as we are doing, to attract new investment into these plants and our wider area. Nevertheless, the statistics I have quoted represent real lives on the up, and we should recognise that there is much to be proud of.

Sudbury Library Hello everyone. Here we are in June, already half way through the year. It doesn’t seem like 5 minutes ago we were celebrating the new year. June is the month we start ramping up preparations for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge which is themed “Space Chase”. Now we are starting to organise activities and competitions for the summer holidays so keep an eye out over the next month so for more information on that. If you want to get involved as a volunteer for the reading game, please either have a look at our Suffolk libraries website or come in and have a chat with a member of staff. TopTime is 2:30 – 4:00pm every Tuesday. The schedule for June is as follows. 4th June is creative writing – if you’ve ever fancied yourself as a writer and wanted to get some experience why not come along to the group. 11th June – Garden birds quiz, do you know your Dunnock from your Sparrow??? Why come along and enjoy a group lead quiz. 18th June – Book group. We’ve changed it up a bit this month. Rather than having one individual book the group is reviewing, we gave out a selection of classic crime novels from various authors and the group will be discussing what they read, should be an interesting discussion. 5th June – Holidays – the group will be chatting about their favourite holidays and finding out about resources that library can offer to help a sojourn in France or Siesta in Spain. Our 1-2-1 computer sessions are booking up fast. As a reminder we offer sessions Wednesdays 3-4pm, Thursdays 11-12pm and Fridays 3-4pm. We cover the basics of using a computer e.g. how to access and search the internet, set up an email address, how to use the keyboard and mouse etc. We will also give you a hand on your own device for a small £2 charge per session. We can cover all sorts of things on Apple, Android (google) or Windows machines. Our Lego club runs every Saturday from 2:30-4:00pm and is 50p a session, after you’ve come along for 10 sessions you will get a reward!!!. We have recently changed our overdue fees throughout Suffolk libraries. We no longer charge overdue fees for children’s and young adult books, and the adult overdue charges have increased to 15p per day per book overdue. If you have books due back and cannot get in to renew them, please give us a call on 01787 321595 with your library card number handy and if we can we will renew them over the phone. Alternatively, if you have access to the internet you can renew your books online. The web address is on the back of your library card. One last thing. The Friends of Sudbury library will be holding a second-hand book sale out the front of the library on the 9th June to compliment the Sudbury Food Festival. If you wanted to support the Friends and Sudbury library, come a long and pick up a bargain. All the funds raised will go to the Friends of Sudbury library which work tirelessly to help fund projects within the library.

Earwax removal clinic launches in Sudbury Those in the local area experiencing blocked ears will no longer have to experience long waiting times to seek relief, thanks to a new earwax removal clinic being launched in Sudbury. It is estimated that in the UK 3.5% of the population each year have problems with earwax sufficient to need intervention. This equates to around 26,500 people in the Suffolk alone. Award winning, family run company, The Hearing Care Centre, which already runs an established hearing clinic at Siam Surgery in Sudbury, is now expanding its services by organising a regular clinic dedicated to the removal of earwax. Earwax build up is not only uncomfortable, but it can also delay assessment and management of hearing loss. Hearing loss caused by impacted wax can be frustrating and stressful, leading to social isolation and depression if untreated. The Hearing Care Centre’s Lead Clinical Ear Care Practitioner, Melvyn Howe said, “There is a real demand for a private earwax removal service in this area. Our specialist team - all certified healthcare professionals, allow sufficient time with each patient to remove wax in a safe and gentle way. Is your garden ready for a dry summer? Last summer we had over three months with no rain – how did your garden fare? Our lawn in Great Cornard was very beige. I didn’t waste water on it, although it was tempting at times, and was very relieved when it greened up with the first rains. Watering a lawn in a drought can do more harm than good Even in extreme conditions, like last summer, most grass will survive. The grass plant has a survival mechanism – it becomes dormant - shutting down its systems until the end of the drought. The top part looks brown and dead but underneath it is (usually) still alive. Growing more, beautiful, drought-tolerant plants In my garden designs I always put drought-tolerant species at the top of my plant list. To start with, choose evergreen flowering shrubs as they keep their form through the winter, such as Cistus, Lavenders, Hypericum, and Hebe.

Softer evergreen plants such as Euphorbia, Stachys, Heuchera and Bergenia also remain visible all year and are happy in a dry summer. When Kingsley Healthcare acquired former Friars Hall Nursing Home in 2017 there was a lot of work to do to restore the trust of local people who had seen the previous service closed down after a shocking Care Quality Commission (CQC) report. Hadleigh Nursing Home welcomes Tracey as new activities coordinator Hadleigh Nursing Home’s new activities coordinator will be no stranger to people in the town. For Tracey Alexander has held all kinds of positions and been involved in many different groups in Hadleigh. She has joined the team at Hadleigh Nursing Home after working at another care home for five years as head of activities. Tracey said: “It is really important for a care home to be at the heart of the local community and I am really keen for our staff and residents to engage with the local community. “We love to welcome local schools, playgroups and community groups into Hadleigh Nursing Home. Please contact me at the home if you have a suggestion for an activity or event you could help us with.” Tracey is a member of Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance and has been a governor of the local primary school and Hadleigh High School. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre June brings us to the Stratford Hills Horse Trials on 15th &16th. It means a lot to us since many of our volunteers help out over the weekend, manning the crossings, stewarding, fence judging and generally doing anything to support the event. The live herd has often lent its stables to visitors for this competition but our ponies don’t actually join in. The course is so attractive and well managed some of the UK’s top riders now bring their young horses to this Horse Trials for their education. The setting is beautiful so it’s well worth joining us there for a great walk in the country and lots of entertainment. Our riders are beginning to practise for our Shelley Show at the end of term. As we did last year, we are splitting the two events up: the Dressage competition will be on either 11th or 18th June and the Countryside Challenge and prize giving will be on June 23rd. So much hard work goes in to getting riders, horses and the Centre looking spick and span, I am quite unable to doze off quietly when the yard is so busy. The summer seems to be packed with activity for everyone. Our fund raising team enjoyed a novel experience packing bags for shoppers in Hadleigh’s Morrisons store on Good Friday. Local resident Sarah Dooley entered a Facebook competition organised by the award-winning home improvement firm and was selected at random as the winner. Top BBC news star describes his media role to Sudbury Rotarians Huw Edwards, a Welsh journalist who presents Britain’s most watched news programme, BBC News at Ten, was the guest speaker at Sudbury Rotary Club’s annual Charter Night dinner held at The Secret Garden Restaurant, Buzzards Hall, in Sudbury on 26 April. Huw recounted many amusing stories of his life in the media, conďŹ rmed that it was very unlikely he would take part in Strictly Come Dancing because of the time pressures of his existing work, and spoke about the role he played in the Bond ďŹ lm Skyfall – for a total of 43 seconds, and as a news presenter! He then turned to more serious matters and was candid about the current parlous state of politics in the UK and the serious divisions among people because of Brexit issues. Fifty guests were present at the birthday dinner – celebrating 69 years of Rotary in Sudbury. They were keen to know how the Club had managed to book Huw Edwards to be their guest speaker. He explained that he had known the Rotary President, Tony Platt, through their joint interest and involvement in the Welsh Chapels in London and that Tony had been very persuasive! Huw surprised the guests by addressing us as “Fellow Rotariansâ€?. Not only is he a Rotarian but he has also been awarded the major accolade in Rotary, a Paul Harris Fellowship. Tony said “Huw ensured that the Charter Night was a very enjoyable and successful evening, and one which will be talked about and remembered for a long time. We were incredibly grateful to Huw for generously giving up time in a very busy schedule of work to visit us in Sudbury, and we will welcome him back at any time.â€? A signiďŹ cant event during May was the ďŹ rst meeting of Pot Kiln School’s Rotakids Club, when 12 children became the ďŹ rst members of the group at their school. They will continue to meet every fortnight and will be able to decide what activities they wish to organise. The 42nd annual Rotary Prom Concert will take place on Saturday 15 June in St Peter’s, with Long Melford Silver Band offering a varied programme of music culminating with the traditional ‘Last Night of the Proms’, when ags, Union Jack hats, balloons and audience participation will be the order of the evening. We have had some lovely weather in May, and were very lucky to have one of the hot sunny days for our visit to 5 miles from anywhere, where we had a most enjoyable 2 course lunch and also had a little time outside on the lawns looking down to the River Cam. Although he had plenty to say about dogs last month, I can forgive the little upstart as he mentioned the sad fact that black and black/white cats are often overlooked. Even sadder are Betty, a black cat and a pretty tabby and white called Fat Cat. Please don’t be put off, she does not have a weight problem. They came in last May when their owner died and need a quiet adult-only home as they are very timid. Can you offer them the love and time they deserve, maybe a new name too? The Sanctuary should be looking spruce if the new paths are ďŹ nished, ready for our Open Day next month. Stoke By Nayland Golf Club At the beginning of the week of the 29th of April the seniors started their annual tour. 7 years ago the Stoke By Nayland Senior’s Vice Captain had the great idea of arranging a VC Tour - since then the number supporting the trip has steadily increased and in 2019, 32 SbyN Seniors made the trip and played some great golf and had a considerable amount of fun. A superb 4 day trip into Northamptonshire playing Pavenham Park, Bedfordshire on the way to Whittlebury Hall, 2 rounds and where we were really well looked after, before playing The Millbrook, Bedfordshire on our way home. Special thanks must go to Terry Mitchell, the Seniors Vice Captain who made all of the arrangements. 4 days golf, 4 different winners - Gordon Bryan, Graham Vandervord, John Parkinson and John Williams but the overall winner was Graham Vandervord, who had a great week. On Wednesday the 1st of May, the past captains of Stoke-by-Nayland GC held their annual spring meeti ng. 27 holes of golf, and lots of food. The afternoon singles, played on the Gainsborough course was won by Reg Reid, the 2010 captain with 43 points. At this meeting the current VC tells the assembled captains who his choice is for the next captain. A popular choice of Mr Cyril Williams of Halstead will be captain in 2021. Reg (left) being presented with the salver trophy by the organiser, Don Wiggins, the 2017 captain after a splendid 3 course a la carte meal in the new captains lounge. On Sunday the Curry Cup team entertained the team from The Essex to play 36 holes on the Gainsborough course. After the morning foursomes the teams were level on 3 points each but the home team performed well in the singles in the afternoon, winning 9 of the 12 matches and finishing with a 12½ to 5½ victory. On bank holiday Monday, a reasonably bright but quite chilly day, the mixed section competed for the Jubilee Salvers, originally presented by Tony Evans back in 1977 he was the Stoke by Naylands 2nd Club Captain. Winners were Garry Borthwick & Barbara Rowe with 39 points. 2nd were Graham & Sarah Atherton on 35 points and 3rd on c/b with 35 points Richard Allen men’s V.C and Diana Harris Ladies Captain. Afterwards the players sat down for a meal of a roast beef carvery with all the trimmings followed by jam sponge puff and custard. Steve Clark
