Sudbury’s Summer Art Fair is back! St Peters Cultural Venue, July 2nd to 14th 2019
Dozens of professional artists and artisan crafters will be showcasing their work at the iconic St Peters Cultural Venue in Sudbury for a two week art fair which displays an amazing selection of hand made art: from paintings, printmaking and jewellery to pottery, fused glass and much more. Curated and managed by local artist and business woman Michele Webber, sponsored by local businesses and in association with Indigo Giclee Fine Art Printing, the Sudbury Summer Art Fair brings together the best professional artists and artisan crafters for an annual exhibition that makes enjoying art easy for local residents. Sudbury Carnival 2019 - 11th August This year our chosen theme is History and we are supporting the Helping Hands charity. The carnival starts with a procession through the town. This year the route is longer with more places to stand and watch and finishes in Belle Vue Park. Attractions will include a free Punch and Judy show, live music throughout day from Route 66 and more, an Arena full of family fun including Donkey Rides, Bouncy Castles and childrens rides. Suffolk Carers Matter is an initiative of the social enterprise Family Carers Net (Winner of Best New Start Up at the Bury Free Press Awards 2018). Suffolk Carers Matter provides support for unpaid carers across the whole of Suffolk. The Advice Line is open seven days a week and offers support by telephone or website Live Chat, with an experienced and professional Carer Advice Team. This could involve helping carers to navigate and understand local services as well as providing emotional support and a non-judgmental listening ear. The Carer Advice Team can assess the carers needs and those of the person they care for and help them access the support which will benefit them most. For carers who feel that their caring role is really impacting on their emotional wellbeing, Suffolk Carers Matter also has an in house team of professional counsellors who can offer up to eight free counselling sessions. These sessions can either be face to face in Bury St Edmunds or Ipswich or via telephone/Skype, whatever is most convenient to the carer. We have had really positive feedback so far with carers saying: “It was great to have the time to focus on me for a change. It gave me the space to off load to a stranger that didn’t judge or make demands of me” and “It helped me through a difficult and painful time. A Guide to Natural Feeding: Part 2 Give a dog a bone In the wild up to a third of a dog’s nutrition may come from bones. Bones keep teeth and gums clean and exercise their upper bodies and jaw. Providing the bones are RAW (cooked bones can splinter), they are safe for dogs to eat. It is easy to understand why the dog wants the meat and marrow, but what makes the bone itself so desirable? Bones contain a huge number of nutrients that are vital to your dog’s health. These include: • minerals, including calcium, magnesium and phosphorous • protein-containing essential amino acids, including lysine • essential fatty acids • fat-soluble vitamins (A, D and E) • blood-forming nutrients (these are in the marrow), including copper and iron. Meaty bones are nature’s toothbrushes. They keep your dog’s teeth clean and gums healthy. Plaque can’t build up and decay is prevented. As a result your dog shouldn’t develop any of the nasty oral diseases to which many of those on processed food are prone. It has been proven that dogs with healthy teeth live longer. It will also mean he or she has sweeter breath. Two further benefits of giving your dog raw meaty bones should be mentioned: 1 - They provide your dog with exercise, strengthening their jaws and upper body, and 2 - They keep your dog occupied. Dogs that have a bone to chew are happier and calmer. What is wrong with processed dog food? It doesn’t matter which brand of processed dog food you use or how much it costs, it is never going to be as good for your dog as raw, fresh meat, bone and vegetable. The key problems are: • It is cooked. Cooking destroys the vast majority of the nutritional value of the food from a dog’s perspective and makes it exceedingly difficult to digest. • It can contain inappropriate and damaging chemicals (binders, colouring, preservatives and other additives). • The quality of the ingredients is usually poor. Even expensive processed dog food often has very low-quality ingredients. That generally means animal by-products, derivatives and low-quality grain. • Most dog foods contain a high percentage of grain (including rice), which is unsuitable for the canine digestive system and is one of the main causes of skin allergies, diabetes and flatulence. • It generally fails to clean the dog’s teeth and gums, allowing plaque to build up. This gives rise to periodontal disease and worse. Dog waste! Natural feeders talk a lot about dog waste. The waste of a raw fed dog is usually much firmer, smaller, less smelly and generally easier to pick up as a result. The reason why is simple: because the dog hasn’t eaten anything it cannot process or the body cannot use, there is very little wasted, resulting in very little waste! One of the main reasons why dogs fed on processed food produce so much waste matter is because of the grain. According to the Government nearly four million people are eligible for Pension Credit but a third of those fail to claim it, in many cases because they do not realise they are entitled to it. Even if you are entitled to a small amount of pension credit it is still worth claiming as it can enable you to qualify for other beneďŹ ts, help with council tax and from 1 June 2020 will mean you are entitled to receive a free television licence if you are aged over 75. The clock is also ticking for pensioners with working age partners to claim Pension Credit before eligibility rules tighten, which mean some could lose out on up to ÂŁ7000 per year. Under new rules, both must be of state pension age to claim, but if only one of you had reached this age by 14 May 2019 you can still qualify by applying by 13 August and backdating your claim which will secure your eligibility going forward. Colleen Sweeney, Chief OfďŹ cer of Sudbury & District Citizens Advice, said: “Pension Credit has always been an underclaimed beneďŹ t but people are missing out on a vital income top-up which would help with their everyday living costs. We want to encourage as many people as possible to have a beneďŹ t check. People will need to provide details of all their income including state pension, occupational pensions and any state beneďŹ ts such as Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment, Attendance Allowance and Carers Allowance. It is even more important now that people check their eligibility as only those aged 75 and over receiving Pension Credit will be entitled to a free television licence as of 1 June next year.â€?

New regular earwax removal clinics in Babergh Those in the local area experiencing blocked ears will no longer have to experience long waiting times to seek relief, thanks to earwax removal clinics that have recently launched in Hadleigh and Sudbury. It is hard to think of a more positive experience as an MP than visiting one of the 39 primary schools in my constituency to talk about the future with my youngest constituents. There is usually one dominant subject of conversation - and it’s not Britain’s departure from the European Union. No, the subject primary pupils are keenest to chat about is the environment. In fact, at the time of writing my last two primary school visits – to Glemsford and Pot Kiln (Great Cornard) – were both dominated by discussions on litter, dealing with plastic waste and climate change. But if we can be confident that our future will be in safe hands, what about the present? Readers will rightly argue that the ‘climate emergency’ requires action today, or the next generation may find it is too late on the scene to deal with its consequences. Fortunately, though there is much more progress to be made, there is a great deal to celebrate. Earlier this month the country went for two full weeks without burning any coal for wholesale energy production. This was the first time a fortnight has passed without any emissions from our most polluting power source since the industrial revolution. It is particularly significant to reflect that this milestone was passed within weeks of the ‘Extinction Rebellion’ protests. At the heart of this shift away from CO2 belching coal-power has been a huge acceleration in the amount of electricity we generate from renewable sources. Renewables generated close to 40% of the UK’s electricity in the final quarter of 2018, up from barely 6% in 2010. We should be proud of delivering in practice the shift away from polluting energy that politicians on all side want to see. Perhaps most significantly, the Government recently committed to ‘net zero’ CO2 emissions by 2050. This is hugely ambitious and will require unprecedented change in every aspect of our daily life. Nevertheless, if achieved it means that when our primary school children reach the age I am today Britain we will have delivered for them a healthier, cleaner, greener and more confident future.

The group will be led by Cllr Penny Otton (Liberal Democrat), with Cllr Elfrede Brambley-Crawshaw (Green) as deputy leader.
New “task and finish” groups to scrutinise education Suffolk County Council has pledged to set up “task and finish” groups to scrutinise education issues, such as home-to-school transport and SEND placements. The council previously had a dedicated Education Scrutiny Committee, but this was dissolved in 2017. My group has requested that any meetings should be open to both the public and the press, to ensure the scrutiny process is transparent.
New Fire Engines and Uniforms making Suffolk safer Suffolk’s firefighters are now kitted out in new state-of-the-art uniforms, making them safer than ever before. The new Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) saw its first action on 1 May 2019, as firefighters responded to reports of a washing machine fire near Bury St Edmunds. The new clothing is more lightweight, comfortable and tailored, including specific designs for men and women. There are also different uniforms for different incidents. Three new fire appliances are also being rolled out, to be based at Framlingham, Holbrook and Long Melford fire stations. This is the first major upgrade to firefighters’ equipment since 2011. As well as providing firefighters with the latest PPE, the new contract also provides better value for the Service and Suffolk County Council. The old uniforms will be returned to their previous supplier, where they are recycled and often exported abroad, predominantly to African countries.

Director of Specsavers in Sudbury, Lynette Copeland says: ‘For a long time people have thought that a visit to the opticians was just about ďŹ nding out their prescription for glasses or contact lenses, but it’s time that people understand that it’s about a lot more than that. It’s also about ensuring that our customers’ eye health is where it should be’. ‘An eye test can detect both minor and serious eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts or age-related macular degeneration as well as retinal detachment and dry eye syndrome. We can also identify other health issues such as intracranial pressure, high or low blood pressure, diabetes and on rare occasions, tumours on the optic nerve or behind the eye.’ Research by Specsavers and the RNIB shows that not enough people are going for an eye test every two years, as recommended by opticians. In fact 50 per cent of all sight loss in the UK is avoidable, if treated and managed early. Lynette continues: ‘We have invested over ÂŁ40,000 in our community’s eye health with the purchase of our OCT machine. This is a huge step forward in helping to improve the eye health of Sudbury residents and those in the surrounding area. Having hospital-grade technology available so readily will not only allow us to detect and manage any potential issues with their eyes, but also takes pressure off of local hospitals and GP surgeries, who are already often over their capacity.’ A visit to the opticians before a GP is recommended for eye related issues, as they have the specialised equipment for early detection, often have shorter waiting time and are able to refer to the hospital for treatment when needed. It is important to book an appointment for anyone who experiences extreme or prolonged headaches, ashing in the sight-line or any recurring or constant blurred vision. Lynette adds: ‘It’s too often that we have customers come into our stores, who have been experiencing issues for a long time and just thought they would clear up on their own. Sometimes we ďŹ nd something serious, which could have been managed much earlier on or prevented completely. We are urging the public to come and see us if they have even the slightest feeling that something isn’t quite right.’ An OCT appointment at the new Specsavers in the Sainsbury Store on Cornard Road will cost just ÂŁ10. Hadleigh Nursing Home turned National Carers Week into a celebration for both staff and residents Residents at the Kingsley Healthcare run home in Friars Road were keen to show their appreciation of the care they receive and made up pots and bags of sweets to present to members of staff. And on the Friday, home manager Tracey Burt treated all the staff and residents to a fabulous pamper day. Tracey said: “Our staff do an amazing job and Carers Week was a great way to show appreciation for their efforts. Our residents loved being able to say thank you personally by presenting every member of staff with a gift.” Photo shows support worker Stuart Ashfield who is loved at the home for his singing. Suffolk-Based Care Homes Group Ensures It Is A Bright Year for Butterflies Across East Anglia One of the sponsors of this year’s Flight for Youth campaign, Kingsley Healthcare, has taken their support to a whole new level, with residents at all 30 of its homes, including Hadleigh Nursing Home, in Hadleigh, painting ceramic butterflies to help celebrate this very special year for The Benjamin Foundation. 2019 marks the 25th anniversary since the charity was established to help people across Norfolk and Suffolk deal with some of the challenges that life throws at them. Whether it’s the prevention of youth homelessness, helping families to build stronger relationships or providing positive activities for young people with limited opportunities in life, their work brings hope, opportunity, stability and independence to the people it supports. As part of the celebrations to observe this milestone The Benjamin Foundation is busy creating a high-profile, visually appealing art installations called Flight for Youth which will feature up to 25,000 glazed pottery butterflies glazed in the charity’s four distinct colours – pink, purple, orange or red. The public are being invited to purchase a butterfly but before taking receipt of their commemorative piece the butterflies are being used to create two dramatic installations, at The Assembly House and Holkham Hall. In addition, the public are being invited to buy a plain butterfly and decorate it themselves; an idea Kingsley Healthcare has embraced. Tracey Burt, manager of Hadleigh Nursing Home, in Friars Road, said: “It’s been a really fun art project for our residents. “We have been decorating our garden with the brightly coloured butterflies before they are sent off for the art project.” The Suffolk based company is also celebrating a very special milestone year in 2019 and, as such, Kingsley has agreed a major sponsorship deal with The Benjamin Foundation to mark its 20th anniversary year. As well as supporting the art project, Kingsley’s CEO Daya Thayan has made a significant donation to the charity’s £100,000 appeal. As if this wasn’t enough, staff at its care homes and head office – Kingsley House in Lowestoft – will also be organising fundraising events for The Benjamin Foundation throughout the year. Mr Thayan said: “Kingsley started in East Anglia when we bought our first care home in Lowestoft so we thought it was fitting to support a local charity in our anniversary year. We are delighted to be supporting the Benjamin Foundation; we see in it the same values and a similar vision to our own charity, the Lotus Foundation.” Colin Lang MBE, Special Projects Manager who has created the appeal explains: “When planning how to mark our anniversary we decided that it must be something that anyone could be a part of and we couldn’t be more thrilled to see the residents at Kingsley Healthcare getting so involved. Speaking of tolerance, for which my fair land was once a beacon of, I find myself somewhat disgusted at the puerile antics of our misnamed “liberal” citizens. Take for example the recent State visit of the orange haired buffoon from over the pond. Obviously I have no wish to break bread or share a glass with this distasteful creature but he is the chosen representative of our oldest ally and former colony, which having achieved independence of a sort seeks to emulate their mother country by electing an ignoramus. The States require no lecturing from the likes of us regarding their choice of leader or by following any example set by us. However, I digress. Trump’s visit coincided with the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of D Day when celebrations, services and much thoughtful meditation was given to the sacrifices made by Commonwealth, European and American troops in saving civilisation from, in the words of Churchill “a perverted science”. For once politicians of all parties (including Trump) followed the example set by the Queen and performed with the dignity the occasion demanded. I agree that people should be free to demonstrate, whatever their views, that is an inarguable right, and if tolerant of the views of others should be upheld. But what I found puerile, childish and dammed rude was the placing of a blimp portraying the President of the United States sitting on a toilet. I trust that those unthinking fools responsible might have taken into account the feelings of those Americans, particularly the veterans, who had travelled here to take part with us, their war time hosts, in movingly commemorating this anniversary. Just a thought, but how would we British react if a similar stunt portraying our Head of State, the Queen, sitting on the pan, decorated the steps of the Senate? It has not escaped my notice that the buffoons of Babergh have not received any injection of wisdom but continue to follow the path of misgovernance and fudge. I quote the Mullah of Babergh, John Ward: “We will ensure the town continues to thrive and that its assets, such as Belle Vue Park, are protected for generations to come”. God give me strength, does he not have but eyes to see? That lovely house, purchased by OUR Borough council for the town in 1936 is now a semi-derelict wreck whilst Ward and his political minions let it further fall into decay. The secrecy surrounding any development of the property continues whilst that useless clique quote “confidential commercial sensitivity” and trust that continued neglect ensures its destruction. Barry Drury’s offer to buy and hand to a Trust the house in the town of his birth was treated with criminal disdain and ignored. Belle Vue Park should be handed back to the governance of our town, not to councillors from far off Shotley or wherever who will only vote at their party’s call, what care they about Sudbury? Now to the most divisive item of our times, Brexit. It has filled more column inches than Love Island and sadly has been the most divisive issue in my rather lengthy lifetime. Again, all tolerance and rational thinking has gone out of the window. The low life scum of the extreme right adopting it as “their” cause, which it isn’t and liberal luvvies physically attacking their elders who believe we should leave and unjustly accusing them of ignorance and racism. Any debate seems to revert to name calling and accusations of being gullible and so many friendships affected. Sadly we have no moral leadership in our country and the only thing that unites us is our mutual disdain and mistrust of our political leaders. Whilst nursing not my first pint of Guinness in the local home for the clinically daft not one companion could name a person of stature to govern this wonderful country and lead us out of the malaise we are in. No Churchill, Atlee and the much maligned heroic Cromwell (just a mention for my Irish chums). Only dwarves standing on the shoulders of giants!

After the formalities of the hand-over and the presentation of two paintings traditionally held by the President of the year (one a gift from a Rotary Club in Denmark and another from the Rotary Club of Donaghadee in N Ireland), and a special lunch held at The Granary in Sudbury, members were able to take trips aboard electric launch Edwardian Lady down to Cornard Lock and return.

Pot Kiln School’s Rotakids Club continues to meet and are already planning the charities they wish to support. They have already appointed their President and their Secretary and conducted a ballot for the role of Treasurer, as so many children were keen to do that job! A very successful Prom Concert took place on Saturday 15 June in St Peter’s, when Long Melford Silver Band offered music as varied as Queen, Finlandia, Overture from Candide, Les Miserables, and even featured items on a Sousaphone, which had once belonged to a player in Billy Cotton’s Band. The audience took part enthusiastically with the traditional ‘Last Night of the Proms’ music at the end of the evening, waving Union Jack ags, singing and greatly enjoying the release of hundreds of balloons. Such fun! Meetings of REG (Rotary Evening Group) continue to be held every fortnight, around 7.30 p.m. under the leadership of Mags Mead. This informal gettogether of men and women is for anyone who would like to be more involved in Rotary activities, but who does not have enough time to attend lunches. REG members are planning to be involved in providing food for children attending a Fit and Fed summer holiday scheme at Pot Kiln School. Ooops, I must start off with an apology for not one, but two, mistakes in months in the previous issue of our outings. Maybe it was the beautiful blue skies and sunshine we had for both was such a shock, or time goes so fast I have a job keeping up with the calendar this year, not really quite sure which month we are in!! So, I promise to try harder this month to get it ALL right!!! Anyway, we had yet a third day this year of blue sky and sunshine for our trip in May when we enjoyed a 2 course lunch at Black Tiles Restaurant followed by a cruise on the River Deben, boarding at Waldringfield. The captain of the ship gave a lovely commentary on the outward trip, and it turned out he knew several of our passengers as he had lived in this area. Although we were still full from lunch, we also had a scone, cream and jam with a lovely cup of tea or coffee during our trip. We were like sardines on our journey, as we had completely filled the boat, and our waitress did a marvellous job of distributing everything and manoeuvring around our feet carrying trays of hot drinks and then scones. In June we have a 2 course lunch booked at the station, followed by a train ride on the Bure Valley Railway from Aylsham to Wroxham, and then some free time in Wroxham, so fingers crossed for another fine day for that outing. We have more trips out in July, August and September, and to add to them we have an afternoon in September to the theatre in Chelmsford to see the musical “Evita”, only recently been able to find out the show CAODS were doing this time, and a 5 day holiday to Warner’s Sinah Warren Hotel on Hayling Island in October. I still have some vacancies for Thursford Christmas Spectacular on Wed 6th and Sunday 17th November, and this year – as last – we are watching from raised seats, a little more expensive than the flats, but at least you do not have someone’s head blocking your view. I have very few seats left (you can count them on one hand!!) for our annual visit to Snape Maltings to see the Co-op Juniors perform their beautiful show, following yet another 2 or 3 course seasonal meal, en route. Looking further ahead, and taking bookings for 2020, I have some vacancies on both our holidays. The first going to Southport at the end of March, and then, by request from passengers, as we enjoyed our visit there in March this year, we are returning to Weston Super Mare for Turkey and Tinsel 5 day. Newton Green’s popular Golf Festival features new innovations A NUMBER of significant changes are in the pipeline for Newton Green Golf Club’s highly successful annual golf week – including a new main trophy and sponsor. Three of the six days of non-stop golf from August 5 – 10 will feature important changes to re-inforce the week’s desire to provide inclusive golf for members across the club. This year’s event will open on the Monday with an 18-hole, par three tournament organised by advanced coach Tim Cooper, who is celebrating his 25th anniversary with the club as professional. There will also be a new look to the Wednesday, 18-hole Stableford, which is incorporating a yellow peril golf ball wildcard to the proceedings. A different section organises each event at the festival, and this day is now in the hands of the Saturday Morning Ultimate Golf Society, which has made a number of donations to the club over the years.

Finally, the 18-hole Saturday proceedings, which traditionally attract around 130 players for Stableford golf and a stroke play element for single handicappers, will have new features. Prizes for the best nine holes will be introduced. Brewers Greene King are the new sponsor of the week, and will be supplying prizes on various days. Additionally, a donor has presented the Golf Festival Trophy for the main Saturday event, which will be handed to the winner at the evening festival party being staged in the club’s marquee. The marquee has been re-roofed at a cost of £3,000 with money mainly raised from festival activities. Entry forms for all events are now on display in the club house.
Suffolk heritage charity remains the ‘thin red line’ The Suffolk Preservation Society has put out a call to all residents and organisations in the county to help be on the right side of history in balancing future economic growth with the proper care of the county’s unique man-made and natural heritage. Supporters of the county’s leading heritage charity met on Friday 7 June at Lavenham Guildhall for its 90th Annual General Meeting. They heard from the Society’s president, Geoffrey Probert, a former high sheriff of Suffolk, who outlined the two major challenges facing present and future generations: how to manage projected housing growth and how to ensure that Suffolk’s coast is not degraded in by the new energy infrastructure needed to support the offshore energy industry. Geoffrey said: “the rush for indiscriminate house building combined with poorly resourced local government planning expertise, has meant that the Suffolk Preservation Society has never been busier in working with local amenity groups to temper the worst of the many large and inappropriate housing developments being proposed. “At the same time, the newly proposed offshore wind farms added up to an area as big as Norfolk and neither the Government nor the National Grid are really engaged in devising a policy on how all this power would come onshore. “With these huge threats the Suffolk Preservation Society could, at times, feel like ‘a very thin red line’ defending the county” he added. Suffolk Preservation Society director, Fiona Cairns, explained how throughout its 90 years, the charity had been blessed by having so many visionary and hardworking supporters. “From founder Muriel Schofield through to conservationist the Duke of Grafton, historian, topographical writer Norman Scarfe, architectural historian Sylvia Colman and benefactors like Alfred Williams, much of Suffolk’s heritage that was in danger of being lost has been saved.” In spite of the contemporary issues of overwhelming housing and energy infrastructure growth, Fiona explained why she remained cautiously optimistic about the future. “We are seeing an increase in the number of local campaign groups resisting inappropriate developments, a greater awareness among local councils of their longer-term responsibilities and an improvement in the membership numbers and volunteering activity of the society itself. “That said, we need more people to ensure that economic growth in Suffolk is truly sustainable and so I’d urge residents and organisations to come and join us to ensure that this fine county is on the right side of history.”

Taste of Sudbury With rainstorms and gales either side, it felt incredibly lucky to have sunshine all day at this year’s Taste of Sudbury Food and Drink Festival on Sunday 9th June. Everyone came out to celebrate our region’s amazing food and drink and attendance levels from previous years appeared to be much higher with Sudbury’s town centre packed all day. Organiser Justine Paul said: “we were totally delighted with how the day went, and have been overwhelmed with positive responses and feedback. There was a lovely vibe on Market Hill with a combination of buzz with so many delicious flavours and tastes to try and also the sense of a relaxed and happy day out.” The kitchen theatre was as popular as ever, with a butchery masterclass from Hollow Trees Farm and cookery demonstrations from Woosters Bakery and local restaurants Alaz and The Forager’s Retreat drawing packed crowds. The new family area by the Town Hall with small farm animals, a giant Ernest Doe tractor, children’s cooking slots, music and picnic benches was also a great success. Justine says: “Everyone has said it’s been the best event yet and we are will be looking to build on what worked well again next year. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Double hoorays for the team of employees from Zurich in Ipswich! They chose us as their firm’s Charity Day for 2019. They arrived in force on 24th May and worked from dawn till dusk on the land and many of the maintenance jobs. Look at the photo of this amazing team. Not only have they given us the physical help we needed, they have been sponsored most generously by their firm to do so. The Centre was looking perfect, just like the National Stud at Newmarket when they finished. When the grass grows again, and the weeds creep back, we shall be hoping to have some fresh help. Our regular maintenance volunteers need a boost: some extra bods willing to come over and work here for a couple of hours a week, mending things, mowing, watering and ‘sweeping’. All our lovely volunteers need to take time off for family things from time to time so the more people on the maintenance team, the merrier. Could you consider joining us? (If you are only free in the holidays that’s OK with us.) Our trustees will have held the AGM by the time you read this. I thought it was some kind of meeting, but from what I hear behind my shut door, it’s a party and takes up the whole yard; there is a smell of cooking, a lot of chatter, and a tinkle of glasses. What you humans will get up to in the interests of keeping us going never ceases to amaze me. Our Shelley Show brought June to a close, and the results will soon be up on the web page for you to see. However much the riders achieve for themselves, and we are very proud that they do, they couldn’t really do it without help from Jo Public, in the form of volunteers. I have heard that we need more helpers for the Tuesday rides (5 adult riders, then 4 children, then another 4 children) a pony leader for the Thursday morning boys’ ride at 10.00, and two more side walkers for our Thursday ladies at 11.00, and again for the Thursday afternoon very special needs children who come over from their school during lunch time. A very clever lady called Margaret will allocate help where it is most needed if you just contact her to say when you could commit to working here. I’ll continue with my 30th birthday project of sharing 30 good reasons with my readers as to how people connected with the Shelley Centre feel about their being here: 9) (Is she joking ?) “To get away from my husband!” 10) “ It’s nice meeting new people and making friends here. I like helping our riders, and seeing them smile.” 11) “I find it very interesting to encounter so many and various disabilities.” 12) Ruth, who is one of our adult riders: “In short a reason to come to Shelley...........It is a truly special place where miracles happen. There are excellent equine friends along with wonderful people who all contribute to the enrichment of so many lives. A chance too, to get to know EBONY.” Well, I like that Ruth, thank you for mentioning ME. After all the rain of the last month, here’s to everyone enjoying a bit of sun and blue sky as the school holidays loom for our younger riders. To those riders not governed by school term dates, we apologise that we’ll be closed for August, and hope you find a way to take exercise without us!
