Bus service supporting local community gets go ahead A vital volunteer transport service serving local communities in Sudbury has been given the go ahead to continue, following a trial period. The Go Start Community bus project provides a direct bus service for people living in and around Bakers Mill, Great Cornard, Long Melford and Glemsford to the Sudbury Health Centre and other key local amenities, stopping at all bus stops along the route. The service runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10am and 12noon for a fare of ÂŁ2 per journey; starting in Head Street, Great Cornard and ending at the School Field, Glemsford. The route includes Sudbury Health Centre, Tesco and Long Melford. Bus passes can also be used. Go Start Community Transport has been in operation since 2008 and has a friendly team of trained volunteer drivers supporting the service. The route provides much-needed transport for elderly and disabled people living in Babergh’s rural communities. Fares are subsided by donations and grants from other charitable bodies, local government and the Department for Transport who cover a portion of the fuel costs. John Phillips from Go Start, said: “This service offers local residents a much needed service for a really great price. The service is open to anyone needing to attend clinic or even just wanting to get to the shops. “We want to make sure that the service meets passengers needs and would welcome any feedback, from current and future users. It is important to ensure we are offering this essential bus route in the right way. The feedback will be included in a review of the service, planned for the end of the year. Babergh Cabinet Member for Communities Cllr Margaret Maybury said: “This is a great community initiative and the Council is pleased to be able to continue to support community action that looks to improve the quality of life for our residents. As a direct transport service it opens up many opportunities for its users. The service may seem simple to some but the impact that it has is far reaching in the lives of vulnerable people getting the support that they need.“

First spade in the ground for new Sudbury skate park Ground has been broken ahead of the construction of a new skate park in Sudbury’s Belle Vue Park, following public consultation earlier this year. Babergh Councillors were joined by the Sudbury Skate Park Users Group members Jonathan Sandford and Channon King, and Operations Manager, Duncan Holley from contractors Gravity to celebrate the construction of the new skate park in Belle Vue Park, Sudbury. The ground was officially broken by Cllrs Margaret Maybury, Jan Osborne and John Ward with work set to begin on Monday 19 November. Construction of the skate park is the second phase of works to take place, following the completion of a new Multi-Use Games Area in Belle Vue Park. Gravity are due to commence work on Monday 19 November. The new skate/BMX park will replace the previous skate park and, as a result of consultation with skate park users earlier this year, will feature sprayed concrete ramps and features for bikers and skaters to enjoy. Work follows planning, community engagement and consultation with Babergh District Council, the Town Council, community groups and skate park users to identify the right facilities for Belle Vue Park. The newly developed Multi-Use Games Area and Skate/BMX park are hoped to be officially opened to the public later this year, with opening ceremonies planned to take place around March next year. Suffolk Open Studios call for Artists 2019 - Premier Artists’ Showcase invites members to join for 8th Successful Year
Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have joined up with Suffolk Libraries and other businesses in the community, to support a new Visitor Information Point (VIP) Network The new VIP Network will see visitors to the Babergh and Mid Suffolk areas have more choice about where and how they access visitor information across the districts.
Suffolk Open Studios have launched their 2019 Call for Artists, inviting artists and galleries living and working across Suffolk to join next year’s programme.
The Councils are actively supporting the development of the network, via Suffolk Libraries and other local businesses, as part of a collaborative initiative to support tourism in the districts.
Earlier this year, over 100 artists opened their studios to the public and enjoyed the many advantages of taking part, including reaching new audiences and showing their work in the comfort of their own studio; receiving valuable feedback by interacting directly with potential clients; and the chance to meet and collaborate with fellow artists in their area. Artists and galleries also benefit from valuable publicity through their profile on the Suffolk Open Studios website and Facebook page, and inclusion in the printed directory, distributed free of charge to tourist centres, art venues and visitor attractions throughout the county.
Visitors will be able to use their own devices and self-service tablets, available at some sites in coming months, to find attractions, leisure facilities, accommodation, transport and more. Leaflets and advice will be available from trained staff based at the VIP locations with the aim of supporting the local economy.
Members are also guaranteed a place in the annual Suffolk Open Studios Annual Showcase Exhibition at the Apex Centre in Bury-St-Edmunds, running 25 February - 1 April 2019. This year’s show proved extremely popular and drew favourable comments from across the art community.
Cllr Gerard Brewster, Mid Suffolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy, said: “There’s so much to see and do in Mid Suffolk with rolling countryside, heritage buildings and artist trails to name just a few. This new network allows us to support our partners and businesses in delivering a flexible and dynamic tourist information service which visitors can adapt to their needs, whilst supporting the local economy.”
Run by volunteers, Suffolk Open Studios is open to all Suffolk artists and galleries regardless of the media in which they practise. Members open their studios free of charge to the public 11am-5pm over the first five weekends of June, choosing to open on as many or few weekends as they wish. Many join together to form their own local artists’ “trails”; anyone unable to include their own studio can still take part by renting space with other artists and forming their own artists’ “hub”. In many cases, visitors travelled significant distances both within and from outside the county; several make it regular date in their diary to see what their favourite artists are working on now. Suffolk is rightly celebrated for the depth and breadth of its artistic heritage and it’s a pleasure to be making the talent and achievements of our resident artists available once again to the public.” Artists and galleries wishing to take part in next year’s programme can do so from 1 November, by completing the online membership form at www. suffolkopenstudios.org/membership. East Anglian Garden Group Our last lecture of 2018 was given by Rasvan Chizu, and his subject Transylvian Alpine Plants was enjoyed by all. He grew up in the mountains amidst stunning scenery, beautiful wooden churches, and famous castles, and his knowledge of the flora of the region was unbounded. He will be taking groups of people from the Alpine Garden Society on a visit next June. Check their website for details, he will be a most enthusiastic guide! We were treated to a photographic tour of this amazing country, with its wealth of wild flowers, which carpet the mountains from spring onwards. How lucky they are not to have suffered the ravages of intensive farming, which has denuded our verges and field margins of so many of our wild flowers. Tickets for our Celebrity Speaker, James Alexander-Sinclair,( garden and landscape designer, writer, television presenter and RHS Council member) on February 16th, are now on sale, £10 for members, £15 for non members, and £2.50 from each ticket will be donated to the Greenfingers Charity, who build gardens for childrens hospices. His subject will be ‘ Dancing Through Borders’, the stories and plants behind some of his favourite gardens. In the meantime, I wish all members and guests a Happy and Peaceful Christmas, and a year of good gardening for 2019.
Over the winter period VIP points will be set up at Stowmarket Library covering the Mid Suffolk area. Long Melford Library and Sudbury Library VIPs will cover the Babergh area. The VIP Network will extend over coming months in preparation for the main summer tourist season in 2019.
Cllr Simon Barrett, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy, said: “We’re ready to work with our partners to help visitors through this new network. By using more digital resources and joining up with Suffolk Libraries and others, visitors will have more flexibility in how they access our tourist information. As a district we have so much to offer and we must make sure the VIPs meet the changing needs of our visitors, so they can get the most out of their stay.” Bruce Leeke, CEO of Suffolk Libraries, said: “I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to build on our new partnership with Babergh and Mid Suffolk. Our libraries are well visited with good opening hours and sit at the heart of the community so are ideal places to host information for local people or visitors to the area.” The Councils will soon have ended their direct provision of Tourist Information Centres (TICs) at Stowmarket and Lavenham. Lavenham Parish Council is now set to run the Lavenham TIC as a new Community Hub including a VIP. The Museum of East Anglian Life will continue to open seasonally March to October, with Abbott’s Hall and Gardens open to the public year-round.
Patient Participation Group Long Melford & Lavenham Surgery Following talks earlier on in the year with the The Long Melford Practice (which includes the Lavenham surgery) a Patient Participation Group (PPG) was formed in May, this is made up of a dozen residents who care about this very important facility and the people that use it. The PPG’s first public event was in July to support the Anniversary of 70 years of the National Health Service with the Big7tea event, members of the group held a tea and cakes stall at the Long Melford and Lavenham surgeries along with representatives and displays from various organisations associated with the NHS, money raised on the day was donated to the Brain Tumour Trust, our thanks go to Tanswells Cakes of Long Melford for their generosity. This was followed in July by the launch of a Patients survey asking for comments and suggestions that could assist the staff to improve the patient experience at both of the surgeries, the survey results have now been reviewed and suggestions where possible will be acted upon by the surgeries. Emotional well-being charity celebrates after securing new premises A charity aimed at encouraging people to talk about their problems is celebrating securing new premises, which will help meet growing demand for its service. The Just Talk Campaign was launched by leading psychotherapist Glenda D Roberts and counsellor Sharon Kendall in 2016 following a number of suicides in the Sudbury area and it received official charitable status in 2017. The campaign offers support to people needing help with their emotional well-being and holds free monthly drop-in sessions where people can discuss any problem they may have in confidence without needing to book an appointment. The campaign also offers affordable one-to-one counselling services. The charity has already helped many local people, some who were suicidal, to cope with their problems. However, demand for the charity’s service is now so high it has outgrown its current home at the Exploring U Well-being Centre based in Station Road and has been desperately seeking new premises. Now, the charity has negotiated an affordable agreement with Babergh District Council to make the former Suffolk Free Press offices in Borehamgate Precinct, owned by Babergh, its dedicated new home. The three-story building comes with a shop fronted reception area and will have rooms for drop-in sessions, counselling, training and administration space. There is also kitchen and toilet facilities within the building. Ms Roberts, said: “We are so thrilled to have found a suitable new home for the charity and cannot express how grateful we are to Babergh District Council for supporting us in this way.

There is not a day goes by where someone comes and asks us for help. Now we will have enough space to ensure we can meet the ever growing demand for the service ensuring any local person struggling with their emotional wellbeing will receive the support they need. “There are many people within the community who are feeling alone and unheard and desperately need someone to talk to. At Just Talk we believe everyone has the right to be heard and to have someone they can trust. We want those people to know we are here for them, we are offering a safe and friendly environment where people of any age or background can just come and talk freely about any issue they may have.”
Just Talk is aiming to be fully operational in its new home by the middle of November. Cllr Margaret Maybury, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “The Just Talk campaign is doing amazing work, offering free support and affordable counselling to those in need: often being able to talk to someone about something is all it takes to make a life shine. As attention turns to Christmas – and a welcome escape from Westminster drama – it falls on me to make my annual festive appeal. It’s very simple: please support our local shops, pubs, restaurants, kiosks, markets, social events and village halls. For all the gloom around the future of the high street, we have some fantastic outlets in South Suffolk to buy gifts or enjoy a few hours of pleasant socialising. I hope that all readers take full advantage. Of course, some may say – so what are you doing about it and what action is the Government taking? Personally, I always try to support my local farm shop, particularly with an order for a locally reared turkey, and if we eat out it’s usually at one of the excellent pubs in the constituency where the standard of dining continues to go from strength to strength. It is unrealistic to expect everyone to do all of their Christmas shopping in local family owned stores, and I imagine most people reading this article will do a fair chunk of their shopping online and at supermarkets, as well as in smaller shops. But we can all ‘do our bit’, and I am included in that. As for the Government, we should be clear that there is no easy answer to the structural challenges facing businesses that sell via conventional retail premises. The rise of internet shopping has been blistering, and has brought many economic advantages, driving down prices in a range of retail channels. But, as the headlines of well-known chains struggling to adapt have underscored, these are challenging times.

Thus, for me, a priority has been a fairer tax system, so that shops and family ďŹ rms pay lower business rates, and - without hitting internet start-ups - mega-wealthy web ďŹ rms contribute more. I therefore warmly welcomed the Budget’s twin track approach: cutting business rates for small business rates by up to a third; introducing a new tax on ‘tech giants’. However and wherever you spend this festive break, my I take this opportunity to wish you and your family the very best for Christmas and the new year.
Remembrance Day installation On 11th November 2018, Sudbury’s cultural centre at St Peter’s was transformed for a special Remembrance Day sound and visual installation. Based on the Passchendaele Chairs, the installation of a solitary rocking chair, lit in strong red light and featuring thoughtfully placed army kit, was intended to represent all of the empty chairs left behind in homes after conict. Over the sound system, a carefully selected playlist of music and WW1 poems was played, with narration by Stephen Fry, Imelda Staunton and Danny Dyer, among others. The WW1 Sudbury Roll of Honour was printed and displayed alongside the chair including the men’s names, ages, date of death and occupation before being sent to war. The inclusion of their pre-war jobs really helped to connect with them as people. Many worked in the silk trade in Sudbury, some were baker boys, bottle washers, building apprentices, some were married with children, and some families lost as many as four sons. Sudbury’s Bridge Project ran a cafÊ in St Peter’s on the day, at which ex-servicemen and women were provided with a free cuppa and slice of cake, and 530 visitors in total crossed the threshold. Based on the very positive feedback for this year’s event, the Friends of St Peter’s intend to make this an annual experience to complement all the other great Remembrance events in the town. Many thanks go to the Sudbury Branch Royal British Legion for providing the Roll of Honour, and, in particular, Dean Scott for the loan of his kit.

Everyone was too busy on that Armistice weekend to be able to attend, so the wonderful fund raising committee had to pull the plug on the event. We have been able to welcome more volunteers to the team of helpers who commit to a session a week. Its nice to see the newbies getting the hang of the job and being so much appreciated by our clients (and especially their carers.) No two sessions are the same as our riders have to be matched to the available ponies, the standard of the other participants in each ride, their own personal time tables, and the number of volunteers present at any given time. I myself take two volunteers to look after me, and my riders, as the picture of Matthew ‘in the saddle’ shows. We are all looking forward to our carol service in Shelley church on December 8th. With the yard full of riders and their families and all the wearing tinsel in their head collars it’s a very festive atmosphere before the procession sets off down the candle-lit lane to the church. Squidgey and Camilla are the lucky ones who lead the walk, I wonder whether there is room for them in the church at all? It can’t have been Shetlands who witnessed the birth of Christ in that stable long ago; donkeys more likely and pigeons. We are having a bit of a battle with the latter, and their friends the partridges, all of whom like to roost above the office door and do what birds will do all over the ground: something else to sweep up.

Sudbury Hive launches Website to help local people Sudbury Hive, a charity that supports voluntary and community groups, has relaunched it’s website in order to offer a ‘one-stop-shop’ for local ocal people. It has up-to-date listings for community groups, local services and events, and points people to sources of help and advice. Karen Bleay, Community Engagement Worker for Sudbury Hive, explains; “we have more than 40 charities, not-for-profit and voluntary groups as members of Hive and many of them reported to us that it was difficult to get the word out there about their services. We have so many wonderful groups offering friendship, learning, advice and support to local people, but people can only benefit if they know about them! Over £1,000 of prizes up for grabs in local Christmas Prize Draw
It has been a busy few months for members of Sudbury Rotary, most recently planting crocus bulbs around the town as part of the international “End Polio” campaign. Over 25 years ago, polio killed or paralysed 350,000 children each year, in 2012 there were only 223 cases but, thanks to the immunisation programme set up by Rotary and others, there were only 8 cases last year in developing countries. The programme of immunisation needs to continue until all countries have been polio free for at least five years. Why plant purple crocuses? Because money raised from the purchase of these bulbs helps fund the programme and acts as a reminder that when children are vaccinated their fingers are dipped into purple dye to record this.

This is always a delightful occasion when several primary schools take part, with songs and readings for the Christmas season.

One local family run hearing care company has announced details of a charity Christmas Prize Draw, giving the local community the chance to win one of twelve prizes with a combined value of over £1,000. The Hearing Care Centre, which has 26 centres across Suffolk and Norfolk including one at Health By Design, Hadleigh, is holding its annual Christmas Draw in aid of deafness charity, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, with the winners being declared on Wednesday 19th December 2018. The charity delivers expert training for Hearing Dogs which provides invaluable emotional support to their deaf recipient. New found owners gain confidence, independence and companionship. This year to celebrate their 20th anniversary, The Hearing Care Centre have pledged to raise £20,000 for the charity, with many fundraising initiatives having taken place this year, including quiz nights, a pudding club and a huge drive to collect 20 pence pieces. The prize draw has received generous support from local businesses including Fred Olsen Travel, Theatre Royal Norwich, Archant and Coes Department Stores. On offer in the draw is a luxury break at The Swan Hotel in Southwold, a 5 course tasting menu at Gordon Ramsay’s maze restaurant in London, a giant festive hamper, Hotel Chocolat goodies, travel vouchers and more.
There is a very quick turn-around after the concert so that St Peter’s can be transformed to host the Christmas Tree Festival. Yet another Rotary event, which always brings joy to those who visit. The inside of the Church takes on a magical feel with more than 90 trees decorated by their sponsors (schools, voluntary organisations and businesses) and there is often musical accompaniment during the festival. The festival is open from 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. from Wednesday 5 December to Saturday 8 December, and for the final day on Sunday 9 December from 10 a.m. until 4.00p.m. The Church will feel very empty when all the lights and colours of the decorated trees have disappeared for another year. Funds raised at the Christmas Tree Festival will be distributed between the President’s chosen charities for the year: The Befriending Scheme, East Anglian Air Ambulance and the Richmond Fellowship. With his reindeer stabled nearby, Santa begins his return visits to Sudbury, along with his elves, and will be based in his grotto in Sudbury Library between 10 a.m. and 2.00 p.m. on Saturday 15, Sunday 16, Wednesday 19, Friday 21, Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 December. Children of all ages are welcome to visit Santa in his grotto, and elves will be on hand with their collecting tins for local Rotary charities.

The Befriending Scheme, a charity providing friendship and learning opportunities for adults with learning disabilities, has secured funds to develop a Community Care Farm in Shirley & Lisa Assington. The farm pictured at the farm will provide daytime services for vulnerable people, including adults with a learning disability and/or autism, isolated families, and people with mild mental health conditions. The Sudbury-based charity’s Community Care farm will provide a safe and welcoming place where visitors can benefit from the therapeutic nature of gardening, looking after animals and simply being outdoors. Also planned are specialist training programmes with courses in market gardening, catering, retail and hospitality. The Farm will also offer people the chance to develop social enterprise projects around the growing and selling of flowers and vegetables; and for local schools to take part in a ‘Forest School’ project, an outdoor education delivery project where children learn in outdoor spaces. Other beneficiaries of the Care Farm include isolated military families and housing association tenants living in the Babergh district. The Befriending Scheme has been working for nearly 30 years to provide friendship and learning opportunities for adults with learning disabilities, mild mental health conditions and other isolated groups. The £282,500 grant has been provided by Power to Change, the independent trust set up to grow and support community businesses in England. The Care Farm proposal has already received a tremendous amount of community support from primary and special schools in the area, the local MP James Cartlidge, as well as the donors of the land the Care Farm will be built on, Mike and Lisa Townrow.

The Befriending Scheme are a Suffolk wide charity who provide vulnerable people with friendship and learning opportunities. Our main aim is to tackle loneliness and isolation amongst these groups. We do this through our Hub and Out and About groups. We also provide One to One support through our One to One Befriending Service. During the week commencing the 5th of November, all the sections at Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club held their AGMs and elected a new captain. This then culminated in the club AGM being held on the 9th in the evening when some of the prestigious trophies from each section were handed out to the winners. Early Saturday morning the new men’s captain, John Sandford, had breakfast for over 200 players in the Devora suite followed by “The Captain’s Drive-in”, a shotgun start better-ball competition on both courses. John and the other section new captains were watched by the club members as they drove down the first. Afterwards the players gathered in the Devora Suite again to hear the results of the competition & who guessed the length of the drives correctly in the sweep. Pictured are John and the new ladies captain, Diana Harris, on the first tee before being introduced to the crowd. The new seniors captain for the coming year is Ian Bickers and the new junior captain is Harry English. The winners of the 2 competitions were Richard Bland & Steve Wood on the Gainsborough course with a score of 45 stableford points, and Andy Adams & Trevor Brace with a score of 42 on the Constable course.

On Thursday 8th November Stoke by Nayland Ladies had their AGM and New Lady Captains Drive In. The AGM went smoothly with Last years Lady Captain Elaine Davidson handing over the reign to the Incoming Lady Captain Diana Harris. There was a Presentation of Trophy’s before heading to the bar for a welcome drink with Diana Harris and her husband David Harris. The Ladies then proceeded to the 1st Gainsborough in glorious sunshine to watch the new and past captains tee off. There was then a 9 hole Greensomes competition, the front 9 and back 9 holes where used, with the ladies coping well with the ever changing conditions as we edge towards winter. Best front 9 1st. Once again 10-handicapper Chris Williams came up trumps, winning the trophy for the fifth year running, and scoring a very credible 38 Stableford points in a competition played off three quarters handicap. Lower handicap players took the first three positions, with count-back putting Cos Loizou into second place, followed by Steve Hedges, both on 37 points. The platter was donated by Andy Dodds 17 years ago and he was present to present the trophy.
