Caring Homes Group delighted to welcome 100th overseas Health Care Support Worker Caring Homes Group has welcomed their 100th overseas Health Care Social Worker (HCSW) with open arms as they settle into their new role at a Sudbury, Suffolk care home. Mwarianesu Taderera, originally from Zimbabwe, was met and welcomed at Mellish Care Home by Catherine Martin, Head of Recruitment and Katie McGovern, International Recruitment Lead with their new manager Maekhala Allan. In a bid to tackle the ongoing recruitment challenges across the health and social care sector, Caring Homes Group undertook an innovative approach to recruitment to ensure their homes across the UK and Scotland continued to deliver high-quality care to residents.Creating a new and dedicated healthcare support worker (HSW) position, senior to a care assistant, the role will support care homes by fulfilling several
clinical duties and providing vital support to nursing teams. Marking the 100th HCSW recruited by Caring Homes, Mellish Care Home, a residential elderly dementia care home, welcomed their brandnew HCSW with treats and smiles all around from both staff and residents. Speaking on their new role, Mwarianesu Taderera, said: “It means a lot to me leaving my children miles back in Zimbabwe but I want my efforts and contributions to add value to the Caring Homes with the help of my fellow workers. “Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. Many thanks to the Caring Homes Support Office team and Hillside and Mellish teams for the warm and loving 100th welcome. I feel very privileged and grateful to be given this
opportunity to join Caring Homes.” One of the biggest challenges for overseas colleagues is homesickness. In a bid to help individuals settle in, Caring Homes ensure that the new roles receive a new mobile phone, and a sim card with pre-loaded credit so they can contact their friends and family back home. Speaking about the day, Catherine Martin, said: “This initiative is not just about changing the lives of our residents but also changing our new carers’ lives too. Should your spouse/partner or parent become unable to manage their affairs themselves due to ill-health or injury, their individual bank accounts are likely to be effectively frozen and neither a partner nor next of kin will be able to deal with organisations on their behalf. For example, this would mean being unable to deal with financial institutions in respect of accounts and pensions, the Department for Work and Pensions, or utility companies. Similarly, a next of kin will not be able to make decisions regarding the health and welfare of a spouse/partner, parent or other relative, including where and what care should be provided, as well as what end of life care should be received, if any. What is needed to be able to help? To assist your spouse/partner, parent or other relative with affairs during their lifetime, or make certain decisions you will need to have been appointed as an Attorney. This means they will need to have made Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs). Common reasons for needing to help Often people need to assist with these matters because their spouse/ partner, parent or relative has become unable to manage their affairs themselves. This may be due to physical or mental incapacity, perhaps due to illness or an accident. What happens if LPAs are not in place? If you want to help your partner or parent with property, financial, health or welfare decisions and they do not have Powers of Attorney in place and were incapable of making them, you would need to make a costly application to the Court to obtain the necessary authority. The Court application takes several months and can be stressful and frustrating for those involved. Until the Court authorises your application you are unable to deal with the persons money or property, and will be unable to make decisions regarding their health and welfare. What are the two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney? LPAs are important documents that allow someone to give people (often close relatives or friends) the authority to make certain decisions on their behalf. There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney: • Property and Financial Affairs LPA – which allows an attorney to manage and deal with finances and property related matters (such as selling a home). • Health and Welfare LPA – which allows an attorney to make decisions regarding health and personal welfare. This type of LPA only comes into effect when a person no longer has the capacity to make such decisions themselves. Be a school holiday detective Youngsters count the days to the school summer holidays while for parents it can be a different story – how to l keep them occupied, preferably away from X-box gaming and social media. The team at Sudbury Heritage Centre has come up with an interesting alternative - a challenge to be a local history detective! This takes the form of an illustrated quiz sheet that guides under 13s around the town centre, it includes a map that guides them to clues to the quiz questions. Along the way they should learn more about the fascinating history of their home town. A typical quiz question is: ‘ What is the name of the Dalmatian, from ’One Hundred and One Dalmations’ that drank at the water trough outside St Peter’s Church?’ Quiz packs include the quiz sheet, a ‘History Detective’ printed high-viz vest, clipboard Sudbury Heritage Centre, where the quiz starts and badge. Packs can be picked up from the Tourist Information Centre at the Town Hall. This is open 9.30 - 4.30 on weekdays and 10.00 - 1.00 on Saturdays. The Quiz is free to enter but as the number of packs is limited, these have to be returned with the completed quiz sheet as soon as possible, ideally on the day they are collected. This gives the chance for other would-be History Detectives to take part. All eager entrants will get a Certificate to show how they did and this will be sent by The water trough outside email. A suitable email address is required St Peter’s on the quiz sheet entry form, otherwise home address. The very best quizzers will receive prizes according to their age and how well they’ve done. Responsible adults are welcome to accompany children, and this is encouraged to ensure safety, but the answers to the quiz questions need to come from the youngsters.

A Drawing Workshop originally planned for June this year was postponed, due to low numbers signing up for this. The good news is that professional artist Robert Ford will share his knowledge and skills at a workshop on Saturday, 3 September between 11 a.m. and 1.00 p.m. at the Hive Community Hub, in School Street, Sudbury (former United Reformed Church). Robert says “The plan is to learn to draw what you see. I think that drawing is the most essential skill to master, but it can also be great fun!”. Robert has been a professional artist for 30 years, his work has sold worldwide and he has also worked with school children, encouraging them to develop their talents. The Saturday event will be suitable for beginners’ and intermediate skills. The fee will be only £10 per person. Numbers will be limited, so places will need to be booked in advance from 07947 335252. Participants will need to bring their own drawing tools and sketch pads. Cartridge paper and easels will be provided and refreshments will be available. Proceeds from the event will support the work of local charity the Sudbury Market Town Partnership.

Rotary Round-up Maintaining the theme of friendship and fun, a group of Rotarians from Sudbury visited Foxearth Meadows Nature Reserve on 27 June, with guides available to describe the various habitats, including the river and river bank, wetlands and woodland, an ancient field boundary, ponds and marshy, flower-rich grassland. The Photo of Rotarians at Foxearth Meadow Reserve is managed especially for dragonflies and damselflies, but has a wealth of other wildlife, including otters, kingfishers, harvest mice, common lizards, grass snakes and common toads. Rotary visitors were fascinated to watch a number of birds being ringed, then walk across the lake on a board walk, before enjoying their picnic lunches. The Club has welcomed two new members in recent weeks, and a third will be joining shortly. Becoming a Rotarian is not difficult! We have members from all walks of life, who share the Rotary goal of “Service above self” and wish to support our communities, in practical ways as well as by fund-raising, both here and abroad. Summer holiday activities to support families over the school break. An array of activities are planned this summer holiday to provide entertainment and support to families across Babergh and Mid Suffolk. From adventure days to swimming, cooking classes to woodwork there is something to keep everyone occupied over the summer holidays thanks to Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils and partners. The mixed programme of activities aims to help families over the summer as part of the councils’ commitment to health and wellbeing. Explore Outdoor will once again be getting children out and about in nature, while Kinetic Science will be encouraging children to learn through fun with some hands-on experiments. There will also be a variety of cooking lessons provided by The Food Museum, Explore Outdoor and Debenham Sports and Leisure – all supporting the councils’ ongoing ambition to combat holiday hunger. Additionally, there will be sessions for swimming, football, arts and crafts, dodgeball, and filmmaking workshops at locations across the districts including Brantham, Claydon, Hadleigh, Stowmarket and Sudbury. Free places are allocated on a needs basis – local schools identify those in receipt of free school meals, or who may be eligible for other reasons. However, children who do not meet the criteria for free places are welcome to participate for a small fee. Babergh’s cabinet member for communities, Cllr Mary McLaren, said: “I am so pleased we are once again able to work with local companies in the community to offer so many fun activities to keep children entertained over the holidays. The aim of these activities is to encourage everyone to keep fit and healthy, and to ensure that no child is left hungry or lonely over the holidays. No matter your family’s circumstances there is something for everyone.” Mid Suffolk’s cabinet member for communities, Cllr Julie Flatman, said: “These activities help to ease the pressure on families over the summer holidays. Windows Defender is perfectly suitable for most people’s needs. Most Antivirus supplied comes with lots of needless software that is unnecessary. Always ensure however your windows updates have been done. 2. I am using an Apple Mac; do I need antivirus. In our view no, there is very little in the way of viruses out there for Macs and its generally a more secure platform because Apple controls the hardware and software. Making it more secure and more reliable. As long as you update the software on a regular basis. 3. Backups, if using windows Microsoft one drive is an excellent way of backing up your data, if you subscribe to Office 365 it comes as part of the bundle with up to 1tb of storage. If using a mac, then enable iCloud and you will never need to worry about backing up your data again. If you don’t have this option then use an external drive and use Windows backup for Windows computers or Time Machine for Macs. 4. Password management, our advice enables two factor authentication on all your main accounts, if you don’t have this option then make sure the password follows the accounts guidelines and don’t use it anywhere else. For example, keep your main accounts different such as Facebook Instagram Google Apple ID (iCloud) NetflixAmazon etc 5. A good way to remember and store your passwords is either using your browser, such as Microsoft edge/Chrome or Keychain in Apple computers. 6. What is a VPN and do I need one? A VPN is a Virtual Private Network which creates a secure connection from your device to the outside world. I f operating at home and for general use, then our answer is no, not really you do not need it. The main benefit of using a VPN is when operating on public Wi-Fi systems. It is very simple to create a fake Wi-Fi and have users connect to this instead. Without you knowing, therefore a VPN will keep your connection secure. 7. My computer is running slow, taking ages to load and open applications. Check your hard drive. If you are running an old-style hard disk known as a Hard Disk Drive, then you will see a massive benefit in upgrading this to a Solid State type drive. We can upgrade these for you for laptops ranging from 1 – 7 years old. Increasing performance by around 80% and boot times going from 5 minutes to as little as 10 seconds. 8. My home broadband is slow, have you checked t see if its your WIFI that’s causing the issue or your connection? A good way to find out is download the Speedtest app from OOKLA, to your phone, stand next to your router and run the check. If you are getting decent speeds, then move your phone to where you are experiencing problems and run the test again. If it’s different, you would more than likely benefit from a MESH WI-FI system being installed. Do not confuse these with WIFI extenders. MESH works different and does not cause a drop in speeds that extenders will cause, and floods your home with good fast WIFI. Speak to us if you need any help or advice. If you are getting poor speeds when stood next to your router then I would suggest contacting your provider for advice. 9. I’ve deleted my files and I can no longer find them. We have specialist software at Breakout that can scan and recover deleted files. If you find yourself in this situation. Turn off the computer and seek professional advice. The more the computer is left running the less likelihood we will have at retrieving your files as the computer could overwrite the lost files when it needs space. 10. Another busy month here at The Christopher Centre! We were so pleased to have participated in the recent Health Awareness Day held at the Town Hall. We spoke to many people about the Centre, what we do here and the events and groups we have to offer. Our room hire is available on an hourly basis from only £5 per hour. Plans for employment land in Hadleigh ready for next stage An initiative to bring new workspaces to Hadleigh will move to the next stage if Babergh District Council agree a proposal for the sale of part of the land for local retail/ roadside uses to fund the wider scheme development. If agreed, up to 100% of the capital receipt will be used to deliver the scheme that could support and approximately 10 light industrial or workspace units for a range of uses including by micro and start-up www.polsteadjoinery.co.uk businesses. The design of the scheme is based on a Menta report commissioned by Babergh District Council to understand the demand for workspaces in the area. It is hoped that the development will create around 50 full time jobs, support local skills, enhance business network development and provide much needed grow-on space for small businesses. There is also potential for employment opportunities for young people - providing a boost to the local economy as part of the council’s Economic Recovery Plan post covid. The 1.5 acres of allocated employment land, acquired as part of a S106 agreement with Persimmon Homes, who are developing 57 homes at the adjoining housing development scheme, is situated on the A1071 at Ipswich Road, Hadleigh. Since Babergh cabinet approved the concepts for the scheme back in 2021, progress has been made on the wider scheme design development, marketing proposals and pre-tenant engagement. Cllr John Ward, Babergh District Council leader and cabinet member for economic growth commented: “We know there is demand for new employment land in Hadleigh and this scheme will not only address this need but will also create a range of employment and training opportunities. “As part of both our Invest in Hadleigh programme and economic recovery plan, it is crucial that we provide opportunities for businesses to grow and innovate in our growing market towns and the wider region to build a strong economy for the future.”

August Advice Column I’m due to fly to Spain during the school summer holidays. After hearing about all the problems at airports, I’m really worried. My family have been looking forward to this and it’s cost us a lot of money. What do we do if our flight is cancelled or delayed? A lot of people will be worried after seeing the recent news about flights. If you face issues, the Citizens Advice website, www.citizensadvice.org. uk has lots of information about what to do when your flight is delayed or cancelled. If you’re already at the airport when they announce the delay, the airline should give you food and drink, access to phone calls and emails. You should also get accommodation if you’re delayed overnight (including journeys to and from the airport). Your airline might offer you vouchers to pay for these or advise you to keep receipts to claim back expenses later. They will only refund ‘reasonable’ expenses, not expensive meals or luxury hotels. What counts as a long enough delay to get this help depends on how long your flight is. A short flight only needs to be delayed two hours, whereas a flight of more than 3,500km needs to be more than four hours. Full details are on the Citizens Advice website. It’s worth knowing that if your flight is delayed for more than five hours, you don’t have to take it. The airline legally has to give you a full refund for that flight (and any onward flights and return flights if you’re part-way through a connecting journey). Talk to someone from the airline as soon as you decide you don’t want to fly. If your flight is cancelled altogether, you’ve a legal right to either a full refund or a replacement flight to get you to your destination. The refund includes any onward flights and money for a return flight if you’re part-way through a connecting journey. Ask about this at the airport if you can. Don’t just rebook another flight yourself - check with the airline first because it’s their responsibility to sort out your replacement. If you do have to rebook it yourself, keep any receipts and evidence of why the airline couldn’t do this for you, for example screenshots of live chats. If the cancellation ends up delaying you getting to your holiday by two or more hours, you’re entitled to help with costs. Check if you’re entitled to compensation for a delayed or cancelled flight. Again, this will depend on how long the delay was, the distance, and whether it’s the airline’s fault. The Citizens Advice website has details on claiming compensation for delays or cancellations from the airline. You might also be able to claim from your travel insurance – check if your policy covers this. If you have a problem with an airline and you’re not sure what to do, call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline 0808 223 1133 or talk to an adviser online through www.citizensadvice.org.uk For further help and support contact Sudbury and District Citizens Advice on 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. Councillor Jessica Carter reports: I would like to thank everyone who attended the ‘Stop the Poo’ marching protest in support of our River Stour. After the success of my groups River Motion at full Suffolk County Council Meeting on the 19th of May, little has been done and this was yet another call to the government and local councils that something needs to be done. We want our rivers clean – free from raw human sewage and safe for recreational activities so we can enjoy time in the river safely. Suffolk County Council has voted down a Green Party motion (proposed by myself) to declare a cost-of-living emergency in Suffolk, consider setting up a task force to improve energy efficiency of homes and to urge the government to increase the warm home discount. At a meeting of the full council on Thursday, July 7, I said: “I stand before you today to request that Suffolk County Council is to declare that Suffolk has moved from a Cost-Of-Living-Crisis to a Cost-Of-Living Emergency. I was “deeply saddened” by the vote, which came in at 32% in favour and 68% against the motion. “Our motion today was not about policies but about people and today the people of Suffolk were let down,” With the current situation in central government, this will only lead to a knock-on effect of disorganisation, which will filter down to local government. This was our opportunity to reduce these harms and protect the good people of Suffolk. We had put forth reasonable requests and actions that are within our power to carry out in addition to what is already being done, as it is clearly not supportive enough, the evidence is clear that that there are holes in what the county council is currently offering as they do not support everyone, and this would have been the opportunity to change this. To date we are the only council to have a cost-of-living emergency motion brought forward and reject it. Despite of this I am still working with the cost of living alliance to better equip myself to be able to help Sudbury residents, I am working closely with the local Citizens Advice and with the help of others members of my group at county council we have been able to change a policy regarding our locality budget, meaning we will be able to support food banks with funds for food if they need it. Recently From my locality budget I have been able to support Go Start Community Transport and Police Community Clubs, Barney & Echo Projects who will be helping Sudbury Primary children with Cyber Bullying and being internet aware. Local elections are just around the corner with seats available in the District and Sudbury Town Council, could you see yourself taking one of these seats? Facts and Figures from the Past Years ago, when I read ‘The Mayor of Casterbridge’ by Thomas Hardy I was shocked and surprised by the account of the sale of Susan, the wife of Michael Henchard for five guineas (£5.25) to a sailor. I had no idea of how common the practise was, however on researching the subject, I discovered the following facts and figures. The English custom of wife selling began in the late 17th Century when divorce was a practical impossibility for all but the very wealthy. There’s some evidence of it dating back to Anglo Saxon Times. This was the report of a wife being sold in Smithfield Market in July 1797. ‘A butcher exposed his wife to an auction in Smithfield Market. He had a halter about her neck and one around her waist, she was also tied to a railing. The unfortunate lady was purchased by a hog-driver for three guineas and a crown’. The editorial comment was ‘Is there no stop put to such depraved conduct among the lower order of people?’ In 1766 there was a very sad case of a carpenter who sold his wife to a fellow carpenter whilst extremely drunk. When he sobered up, he bitterly regretted his actions and tried to buy her back, she refused and in despair he hung himself. Another interesting case was that of Joseph Thompson and his wife Mary Ann. He stated publicly at the auction that she was a serpent, a tormentor, domestic curse, a night invasion and daily devil. He said that he prayed that God would deliver him from this troublesome wife. However, on the good side hoping that someone would bid for her and give him a good price he said “She could be bright and sunny, could read novels, milk cows, drink ale, make butter and good at scolding the maid” He offered her up for fifty shillings, but only managed to sell her for one pound and a Newfoundland dog, to a man called Henry Mears. Some of the reasons behind this practise were due to the Poor Law Commissioners forcing husbands to sell their wives rather than having to maintain their wives in the Workhouse. Some of the other recorded reasons were wanting to avoid paying toward paying taxes, gambling debts, or the husband could have wanted a younger better-looking partner. Basically, women didn’t have any rights at all and were treated as slaves. The attitude of the authorities was deliberately misleading and vague. One early nineteenth century magistrate is recorded as stating that he did not believe he had the right to prevent the selling of wives. One sale was a wife in exchange for an ox, there was an unwritten agreement that a wife could not be sold for less than a shilling. The last case recorded was in Leeds in 1913 when a man was taken to court for selling his wife to a workmate for £1. Finally, a report from the Bury Post of 16th May 1821, just over 200 years ago. ‘Last week a disgraceful circumstance occurred in Sudbury when Henry Frost sold his wife, ( With the customary halter round her neck) to Robert Whiting for two shillings, but the bargain being offensive to a number of females present they would have given the new bridegroom a summary chastisement had he not taken refuge in a cottage nearby; but when they pursued him he was obliged to make his escape by jumping out of a chamber window’ . Hadleigh CC 1st XI 2019 What a staggering, unbelievable game it was. It had everything – cliffhanging drama, run-outs, and THAT over. It was a real “where were you?” moment. But enough about the 1st XI’s win over Worlington. The World Cup Final was pretty good too the day after. All day long a few hardy HCC souls watched the drama unfold on the big screen in the pavilion, with lots of juniors from two games at the ground that day popping in to watch from time to time. Hopefully what they saw will inspire them to follow in the footsteps of Roy, Stokes, Buttler etc. It has been a much better month for the 1st XI, with three wins on the bounce against Maldon, Worlington and Wivenhoe. This despite plenty of availability and injury issues. Howard Brenton’s play was first performed at Shakespeare’s Globe, London, in July 2010, and was named Best New Play at the whatsonstage.com Awards in 2011. A celebration of a great English heroine, Anne Boleyn dramatises the life and legacy of Henry VIII’s notorious second wife, who helped change the course of the nation’s history. Traditionally seen as either the pawn of an ambitious family manoeuvred into the King’s bed or as a predator manipulating her way to power, Anne – and her ghost – are seen in a very different light in this award-winning play.
