Sudbury’s First Silk Festival to celebrate the town’s rich history as the UK’s silk capital
Sudbury, a small market town in Suffolk, has a little known but rich history of textile weaving and has recently been coined the ’UK Capital of Silk’. Weaving there dates back to the 14th century where many people in the town and outlying villages including Lavenham were employed to spin, dye and weave woollen broadcloth. As part of the festival an exhibition of 18th Century inspired costumes by Vivienne Westwood at Gainsborough’s House will also open on 7 September with free entry the house on the day. Silk Walks around the town and an Architectural Heritage Walk looking at Sudbury’s silk history will also be taking place There is a series of specialist talks running alongside in the Assembly Room at the Town Hall. Sudbury Rowing Club’s Regatta On the 3rd of August 2019, Sudbury Rowing Club proudly presents its fabulous annual Regatta along Friars Meadow, Sudbury, Suffolk. This year we are celebrating our 150th anniversary of the earliest known Stour Boat Regatta on the site of our established Sudbury Rowing club.

We race along this beautiful stretch of river with its notoriously challenging bends, popular with visiting crews. Expect to see plenty of exciting racing in categories, including new to rowing; adaptive and the exciting Sprint Eights with the banks of the picturesque meadow providing excellent spectator views.

Stagecoach Sudbury Main School (6-18 yr olds) have had a great time recently with their Parents-Do-Stagecoach, raising money for the Performing Arts Children’s Charity. Parents suitably embarrassed their children by joining in with their classes of Dance, Drama and Singing. It was brilliant fun and gave the adults a good insight into the great variety of skills the students explore during their time at Stagecoach. Next stop, Early Stages! Cool off with a free summer holiday swim
Here we are full swing into the Summer holidays and we have lots going on this month.
Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils, in partnership with Abbeycroft Leisure and Everyone Active, are encouraging younger residents to get active over the summer holidays by offering free swims at their leisure centres. Children aged 16 and under across the districts, can cool off in the pool during the summer holidays for free during public swimming sessions at Abbeycroft Leisure and Everyone Active centres. The offer will be available at Abbeycroft Leisure centres from 20 July to 1 September inclusive, at Kingfisher Leisure Centre, Sudbury & Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre Users will need to sign up for an Abbeycroft Leisure Free Swimming Membership first in order to claim their free swim. Customers are advised to check the pool programme on their centre’s website for the times of free swimming sessions and terms and conditions. Cllr Derek Davis, Cabinet Member for Communities for Babergh District Council, said: “I’m pleased that we’re able to offer these free swims across Babergh, through our partner Abbeycroft Leisure. It’s important that children are given the opportunity to get active over the summer holidays and what better way to cool off from the summer heat than taking a dip in the pool. “I hope the younger members of our community take this opportunity to have some fun while remaining active and healthy too.” Cllr Julie Flatman, Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing for Mid Suffolk District Council, added: “Swimming is great way for youngsters to unwind after the school term finishes, so it’s great that we’re able to give them the opportunity to swim for free at one of our two Everyone Active swimming pools in Mid Suffolk. Not only does this help to keep children in the district active over the holidays, but also enables families to swim together with the benefit of saving money too.” Tracey Loynds, Development Director at Abbeycroft Leisure, said: “We’re delighted to support Babergh with the free swimming initiatives, which encourages young people to be more active. We want to inspire a healthy you, so as part of this offer, you’ll need to sign up for our Free Swimming Membership. We look forward to seeing residents at our centres in the next few months.” Anselm Gurney, Contract Manager at Everyone Active’s Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre, said: “It’s exciting to be part of a project like this, which encourages residents in Mid Suffolk, to take up swimming, especially if it’s at one of our swimming pools. Getting the next generation involved in understanding wellbeing and the importance of exercise is so important, and I hope this inspires our younger residents to take up the chance to enjoy the benefits that swimming can bring, such as reduced stress and improved flexibility and endurance – and of course cooling down from the summer heat.” Any children under eight years of age must be accompanied by a paying adult in the pool. Swimming lessons are not available as part of this offer.
Summer reading game is off to a flying start. This year the theme is space chase. If your children haven’t signed up yet there is still time. The reading game will be running until 8th September. The volunteers will be here Monday-Wednesday & Friday 10:30 – 12:30 – 14:00 – 16:00. Thursday 14:00 – 16:00. There is no volunteer session on a Thursday morning because we have our weekly pre school session Bookstart & stay and play running throughout the summer holidays from 10:30. Staff have been working hard to organise LAB IN A LIBRARY together with Kinetic Science – space themed fun filled workshop to compliment this years Summer Reading Challenge. It is for 5-12 year olds on Wednesday 21st August 11:00 – 12:30 and 13:00 – 14:30. If you’re interested please have a word with a member of staff; advance booking is essential, tickets are £5 each. Spaces are limited so may sell out quickly. We have our next free Get Connected event on 4th from 11:00 – 15:00. If you have a new tablet, phone or laptop bring it along that day and one of our talented members of staff will help you navigate it and get up and running with it. Like many readers of this column I was very concerned when I heard that a number of bus routes in South Suffolk would lose their subsidy, potentially threatening their viability. As such, as soon as possible after hearing the news I met with ofďŹ cials from Suffolk County Council to highlight the extent to which my constituents will be affected by these changes. A number of the parish councils, and local residents, have already written to me to set out their concerns. I do sympathise, given that we are often talking about a very rare local service and one serving remote and potentially more vulnerable constituents. This is also happening at a time when school bus services are being reconďŹ gured in ways that have plainly presented signiďŹ cant challenges to many parents. Having said all that, we cannot ignore the fact that some local bus services are very far from being economic. I have spent time with Cllr Mary Evans, Suffolk’s cabinet member for transport, going through the detail of speciďŹ c routes and their long-term viability. Some services that are threatened receive subsidies as high as ÂŁ25 per ticket and I am not a supporter of largely empty diesel doubledeckers driving around the countryside at taxpayers’ expense. So, what can we do? On some of these routes, where the subsidy is not enormous, the bus service providers will be encouraged to run the route without Council funding. On the less popular routes, it may be that community transport providers, or taxi-buses, could take over the service on a commercial basis. Fundamentally, I am keen to see these routes maintained where possible and so want to use this opportunity to look at potential innovation. I have already organised a meeting of local taxi ďŹ rms with SCC transport ofďŹ cials to explore how they could set up as taxibus operators, and will also be engaging with community transport providers. Finally, I will be encouraging all operators to secure the Government funding available to upgrade their buses and taxis to electric vehicles. With some forward-thinking it may be possible to provide more versatile, ďŹ nancially sustainable and environmentally-friendly services.

Vertigo, also known as Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) causes brief episodes of mild to intense dizziness. BPPV is usually triggered by specific changes in the position of your head. This might occur when you tip your head up or down, when you lie down, or when you turn over or sit up in bed. Symptoms may include; dizziness, vomiting, loss of balance, room spinning sensations, nausea, and stiffness of the neck. BPPV is often associated with a minor to severe blow to your head. Less common causes of BPPV include disorders that damage your inner ear or, rarely, damage that occurs during ear surgery or during prolonged positioning on your back. BPPV also has been associated with migraines. Vertigo occurs most often in people age 50 and older but can occur at any age. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is also more common in women than in men. At Hadleigh Physio we assess and treat vertigo with specific evidencebased techniques shown to reduce and stop the symptoms. August’s Advice Column About five years ago my father-in-law was the victim of a scam artist who fleeced him out of £5,000. Once he realised, he was devastated and we were able to work with his bank to get some of the money back. We thought it was all in the past but in the last six months he’s received numerous calls, letters and texts from what look like other scammers. We want to try and keep him safe as his memory isn’t the best, what can we do? Unfortunately, falling victim to a scam once can increase exposure to further scams. Citizens Advice has found that, once someone has responded to a scam, their personal details can sometimes be sold onto other criminals. This then opens the door to more scam mail, emails, phone calls or home visits. If you recognise a pattern of unsolicited calls, talk to your father-in-law’s telephone provider and see if you can get these numbers blocked or if you can get something called a ‘standalone call blocker.’ If not, register your father-in-law’s number with the Telephone Preference Service who can help you to handle unwanted marketing calls. If your father-in-law is receiving texts it’s important that he never replies, as sometimes there can be costly hidden charges. He can report the texts to his mobile phone provider who will be able to block the number. If he’s already been stung and call cost information wasn’t given, he should report it to Phone-pay Plus. Mail scammers can often impersonate banks, the local council, or other established and legitimate organisations. You should advise your father-in-law against responding unless he’s sure it’s legitimate and was expecting a letter. If in doubt he should contact the organisation directly to check the letter’s legitimacy. He should be careful to not just ring up the number on the letter as it could be a bogus call centre. In addition, to safeguard your father-on-law from unwanted marketing material or junk mail, register his name and address for free with the Mailing Preference Service which will take his name off some mailing lists. Doorstep scammers can often be intimidating, and unfortunately they commonly target older and more vulnerable people. Your father shouldn’t be embarrassed turning people away and shouldn’t let them in unless he’s expecting them. If someone comes to the door saying they are from one of his utility companies for example, he should ask to check their credentials. If in doubt, he should phone the company they represent or check online, but once again make sure to not just use the contact details they provide. We have our 5 day holiday at Sinah Warren, Hayling Island at the beginning of October. That brings us (already) to the CHRISTMAS SHOWS!!! I have two trips again this year, to THURSFORD for their CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR on Wednesday 6th and Sunday 17th November. Raised seating for both performances. (My personal favourite venue.) December brings us to Snape Maltings for the Co-op Juniors CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR – a show with over 100 children for their 15th Anniversary. 2020 We are again visiting Brick Lane Music Hall for their annual Adult pantomime, together with a 3 course lunch in February. 2x 5 day holidays to Southport in March, and already booking for November Turkey and Tinsel at Weston Super Mare (by request). The hedgehogs that Mother nursed through the winter have been released into suitable environs. Known as the gardener’s friend, they eat lots of pesky bugs but many die crossing the road in their search for food. Providing cat or dog food (WITHOUT fish) or dry hedgehog food from pet shops plus water each day may encourage them to stay put. We are also grateful to employees from local companies who helped prepare for our Open Day last month. There are always jobs that need doing like cleaning kennels, feeding animals, walking dogs, grass cutting, repairs, sorting donated items or taking part in fundraising events. Mark Saberton in Menotti’s ‘The Telephone’ The season is coming to a close but summer lovin’ is still in the air. Gian Carlo Menotti’s comic opera, ‘The Telephone’ is in town, featuring Sudbury’s very own baritone Mark Saberton, fresh from Covent Garden, and the international coloratura soprano, Lisa Cassidy. The first half traverses the minefield of courtship, complemented by a second half of passion and love in the form of song and duets. Mark grew up in Great Waldingfield, attending Thomas Gainsborough School and now returns to the Quay Theatre following his popular 2014 and 2017 appearances. He has performed at The Royal Opera House, English National Opera, Opera North and Scottish Opera. When Sudbury Lisa Cassidy not away on tour, he lives and teaches singing in Sudbury. has gained a reputation for both the singular beauty of her voice and her striking theatrical presence. She has recently been developing and performing contemporary classical works in Spain with Vertixe Sonora Ensemble. Acclaimed pianist Matthew McCombie accompanies again after making a great impression in the concert here two years ago. As well as frequent performances in the United Kingdom with conductors such as Barry Wordsworth and Ronald Corp he travels round the world performing for the Cunard Line and P&O Cruises. Menotti’s ‘The Telephone’ or ‘L’amour à trois’ is an entertaining gem of operatic comedy, presenting an attempted marriage proposal alongside endless phone interruptions (how very modern!). Ben loves Lucy or, should we call her, ‘Rockabilly Lucy’, with her total adoration of 1950s style? Will his gift soften her heart, and encourage her to accept his hand in marriage, or remove her from his arms forever? The first performance was in 1947 but this production has a more contemporary look at the story. As well as the short one act opera there will be a selection of songs and duets from the American and English classical song repertoire, featuring composers including Gerald Finzi, Roger Quilter, Peter Warlock, Samuel Barber and Roderick Williams. These trace the journey of myriad conversations and musings on that delightful tyrant, Love.

The old public toilets on Cordell Road were shut by the District Council some 4- 5 years ago, and were never going to be re-opened. Long Melford Parish Council bought the site from the District Council with the express purpose of delivering a more cost- effective office for the Parish Council, but also to enable a portion of the site to be re-opened as a multi-use, single site public convenience. The Chairman of Long Melford Parish Council, John Nunn said “In the days of District and County Councils shutting toilets up and down the country due to cost constraints, it is nice to see that our Parish Council is able to open a public toilet within the centre of our village. There are many candidates for “Hypocrite of the Year” among our politicians but surely a senior civil servant (like the rest neither civil nor servile) must take the biscuit. Sir Robert Devereux, senior mandarin as Secretary of the Department of Works and Pensions, retiring salary (at the age of 63) £180k, is looking forward to the life of hardship common to the average gullible citizen. However his annual pension of but £85k and a lump sum of £245k will ensure he will not be suffering a Wetherspoon’s lunch. Yes, it’s the same senior civil servant that recommended we peasants who actually employ him should suffer an extra two years servitude and retire on the meanest state pensions of a major power at 67! You couldn’t make it up. And whilst the Cabinet find this unquestionably acceptable their political chums, further down the ladder, never table a question at County or Babergh level “Why does our employee’s pension fund receive 35% of all rates collected?” Name one company in private industry that diverts such a massive percentage of takings to workers’ pensions. Over to you councilors. Whilst we are informed there are no funds available for roads, care or other services, I can find no record of any councilor of any party questioning this practice, all obviously frightened of not following the party line and causing strife amongst our employees. Whilst on the subject of Babergh I recently studied their achievements since I moved less than 20 miles over the border to this beautiful town some 34 years ago and I thought this little backwater somewhat idyllic. Developing local pubs at my leisure, earning a small crust and enjoying life on the Stour. Interviewed first by a Superintendent at Sudbury nick (closed), attending Sudbury Court (closed) where local justice was dispensed by unsalaried local worthies. Subsequent visits to one of two local hospitals (closed), the beautiful Belle Vue House (closed), People’s Park, designated site of a brand new hospital. Hamilton Road bus park, then to be developed for community use. A town centre post office (closed), independent traders with no “super pubs” and very few charity shops. I think it still a great place to see out my days, but look at what we’ve lost. Friars Street’s Ship and Star and the Anchor, the Christopher with its “colourful” clientele, the Harlequin, Easterns and other great pubs, now replaced by the likes of Wetherspoons!!! The loss of drinking haunts and such venues cannot be laid at Babergh’s door but their lack of vision and general indecisiveness whilst misgoverning our town cannot be denied. The Hamilton Road Nature Reserve, rumoured to be the sanctuary of Lord Lucan, overgrown and ill fenced, which surely could have served some civic purpose in recent years. The residents of Sandy Lane campaigning for the sensible move of our recycling site (or dump) to an accessible area. This could be resolved at little cost to the rate payer, freeing the current area for housing. The criminal dereliction of Belle Vue house and the imposed secrecy whilst quoting “commercial sensitivity.” We were recently treated to a glossy expensive pamphlet extolling the achievements and virtues of that bunch! So, having noted what our town has lost in but forty years, could Babergh please list their improvements to Sudbury in that time? Surely that discredited lot, having merged with South Suffolk (having been told by the electorate not to) and whilst selling their Hadleigh offices moved out of their own manor to Ipswich, could be disbanded, given their gongs and officers pensions, and hand back the governance to Sudbury and other town councils. They couldn’t do worse and it would cost much less! On a lighter note a nephew of mine domiciled in Australia (without a criminal conviction no less) asked why I preferred to reside here in God’s little acre to his land of endless sunshine. Comparisons; Australia barren deserts, Sudbury, the oldest worked meadow lands in the east. Australia, the home of Ned Kelly, bushranger, Sudbury the home of artist Thomas Gainsborough. Australia the home of Foster’s lager, Sudbury, the home of Nethergate and Mauldons beer. Australia where the indigenous population were hunted almost to extinction, Sudbury where our indigenous population rip out cash dispensers and church roofs unbothered by law enforcement. Australia where gay marriage is yet to be legalised, Sudbury where its mandatory. Australia with corrugated tin bush chapels, Sudbury with three medieval churches. Australia Emblem Skippy the Kangaroo, Sudbury emblem the now extinct Talbot dog having been eaten by our said indigenous population together with our hedgehogs. I would like to reply to Peter Thorogood’s unpleasant, but all too familiar, attack on Babergh and me personally last month. Leaving aside his nasty insults of ‘buffoons of Babergh’, ‘mullah’, ‘political minions’ and ‘useless clique’, he has made some very strong and untrue allegations against Babergh. He asserts that we are deliberately neglecting Belle Vue House to ensure its destruction. On the contrary, we are actively seeking long-term solutions for the house and welcome any proposals for its future. He asserts that we treated Barry Drury’s 2015 offer with criminal disdain and ignored it. Again, not true: Mr. Drury submitted a one-page offer to buy the house and swimming pool site. The offer was one of six that were evaluated in 2015, but it didn’t pass the evaluation criteria as it lacked detail and although further information was requested, none was received. And finally, what is wrong with councillors from Shotley and other parts of Babergh having a say? Sudbury councillors vote on matters that affect elsewhere in the district: we are all Babergh and care about the whole district. Peter should visit the peninsular – it isn’t far away and it is a lovely part of Babergh. Admittedly, having been born there I am probably a bit biased. It also has a good mix of councillors: one Conservative, two Independents and one Green. He is obviously a very angry man, but my advice is to temper this and concentrate on facts and rational argument if he hopes to have an influence on debates that are taking place about Sudbury’s future. Mark Watson from East Anglian Air Ambulance is presented with a cheque for ÂŁ2,000 by retiring President Tony Platt REG – the Rotary Evening Group – have progressed their plans to help with a ‘Fit and Fed’ scheme at Pot Kiln school during the summer holiday, helping to provide fun activities, breakfast and lunch for a number of children, working alongside volunteers from the Phoenix Marchers. The members of Pot Kiln’s Rotakids Club meet every two weeks in the school and held their ďŹ rst fund-raising stall in July (selling ice creams). They planned to donate the money raised to the children’s hospice. Each year in Cricket Week, Sudbury Rotary Club members and their guests meet for lunch in the marquee at Sudbury Cricket Club and take the opportunity to watch the teams play before and after a delicious two-course meal. Blazers and summer hats are very much in evidence at this event, which is a very relaxed affair without any formal business taking place, giving plenty of time to mingle and socialise. A very successful barbecue was held on the ďŹ fth Monday in July, when members were invited by Sandra and Paul Armitage to join them for lunch in their lovely garden in Chelsworth. For the coming year, it is hoped that on ďŹ fth Mondays a ‘different’ kind of activity will take place from the usual lunch. The traditional visit from the new District 1080 Governor will take place on August 5, when DG Jonathan King will join Sudbury Rotarians for lunch at the Mill Hotel and tell us more about his vision for the year. A speaker for the meeting on 19 August has yet to be conďŹ rmed, but the ďŹ nal Monday of August is, of course, a bank holiday, when Club members will also take a holiday from their normal meeting, returning on 2 September to hear from the Rev Canon Cheryl Collins about her 25 years in the Ministry. Canon Collins was one of the very ďŹ rst women to be ordained and has had a fascinating, though at times challenging, journey from those early days in the ministry. An Enemy Of The People An exciting and thought-provoking drama is coming next from Sudbury Dramatic Society based at The Quay Theatre in Sudbury - Henrick Ibsen’s play - An Enemy of the People – in a version by Rebecca Lenkiewicz which is on at The Quay Theatre from Tuesday 10th to Saturday 14th September at 7.45pm. Power. Money. Morality. In a tight-knit community the shocking discovery of pollution in the town’s popular spa baths by Dr Thomas Stockman comes to light. To begin with he is hailed as a hero for saving the community from disaster but, it is soon realised that his findings will threaten the lifeblood of the town. The resulting decision to cover up the discovery leaves the previously respected and popular doctor being treated as ‘an enemy of the people’. Truth and honour are pitched against wild ambition and corruption in Ibsen’s emotional and gripping drama, which reflects on our world today with its themes of fake news, whistleblowers and the challenges of personal and global politics. An Enemy of the People sees the directing debut of Darryl Crawley, who says “This production of Ibsen’s masterpiece will be set in a modernised, minimalistic, scandi-style and will explore family, class, the oppression and the lies that society is built upon”. The H Hive ive C Centre at Sudbury URC – donation from Sudbury Sings Hive has recently released its appeal leaflet to continue their fund-raising to provide a multi-use community facility in the former URC in School Street, Sudbury. The Church and its halls offer medium to large-scale rooms which can be used to serve the needs of voluntary and community organisations and other groups in and around the town. Already around 20 groups have expressed a wish to use the building to support their activities, many of which help the most vulnerable in our community, as well as groups which previously used the halls for their events and rehearsals. A recent and welcome boost to the fund-raising appeal has been an £800 donation from the members of Sudbury Sings. Martin Blagden, their Director presented the cash to Hive Treasurer Gareth Cole at their recent rehearsal. Gareth said “A huge thank you to Martin and the Sudbury Sings members for their generosity. Hive is delighted to have this vital support for our project”. The former URC is designated as an Asset of Community Value until July 2023. Significant funding has already been promised to enable Hive to purchase the building but around £150,000 still needs to be raised. Hive has made an offer to the Eastern Region Synod and hope that this will be successful. With so many groups in need of this kind of accommodation, not available elsewhere, Hive hopes that it will be possible to agree the purchase before the end of the autumn; another winter with the building unheated and unrepaired will not be good for it and many people are keen to see the building back in use for its community. Last summer I attended a coffee morning to raise funds for Sudbury Newstalk and I showed an interest in contributing in some way. I was invited to attend a recording held in Sudbury. I found the experience not as daunting as I had feared. I was asked if I would like to write a piece entitled “Sparkling” for the November issue. What ever could I write about? However, inspiration came from the coordinator who made several suggestions along the lines of “Christmas, parties, clothing jewellery, sunlight on water, fireworks amongst others. As I was involved with rehearsals (as prompt) with my local amateur dramatic production, I decided to write a piece entitled “Pantomime Season”. I could work plenty of “sparkle” into that. 500 to 700 words to be read out in about 5 minutes was the guide line. Well, the problem was not writing it but knowing when to stop! Everyone has life experiences and the suggestion sheet was invaluable in giving ideas and helped me to focus my mind. If you would like to give something back to the community do get in touch. I joined a very laid back friendly group. A piece submitted every 8 weeks and read out during an hour’s recording session, is not onerous. If a mistake is made, the technician will rewind and you start the sentence again. So no pressure! Give it a go! Talk to Jane. Sudbury uses screen archive as a space saver Sudbury’s much-admired Heritage Centre has embraced digital technology to make itself a repository of the town’s written and photographic history. Four screens now supplement static panels and display cases. A 60in screen showcases local history in a depth that would otherwise be impossible, given the limitations of space in the Heritage Centre which is on the ground floor of the town hall. Local historians, and other enthusiasts, submit presentations within the brief of no more than 10 minutes running time and strong on images with concise text. Visitors can summon these to the screen by a click, making their choice from 17 topics already listed.. For example, in this way the Heritage Centre has been able to tell in depth the story of Simon of Sudbury, Archbishop of Canterbury, who was beheaded in the Peasants’ Revolt of 1481. This supplements his reconstructed likeness, already in the Heritage Centre, which was made using forensic techniques on his partly mummified head kept in nearby St Gregory’s church. The latest addition to the archive went live this month (July). It links Sudbury’s once thriving bunting industry with the iconic Star Spangled banner that inspired the American national anthem and is now in the Smithsonian museum of American history. Images on a single panel together with a poster outside entice visitors to discover the link. This presentation will run constantly for two months or so, though visitors can switch with a click to another local presentation in the archive. Subjects include railways, policing firefighting, silk weaving, artists, and war heroes. The origins of the Star Spangled Banner will be replaced as the default story by the Boer War history of Sudbury volunteer militia.This November will be the 120th anniversary of their arrival The star spangled banner in South Africa with the Suffolk Regiment. Park ready for summer fun Sudbury’s new skatepark and multi-use games area were officially opened in Belle Vue Park over the weekend of 22/23 June following £150,000 of investment from Babergh District Council. Skatepark users, Sudbury residents and Babergh District Councillors gathered in Belle Vue Park, Sudbury on Saturday (22 June) to officially open the new facilities including a brand new skatepark and multi-use games area. Activities organised by the skate park user group included ‘best trick’ competitions for all ages and styles, music from Double Decker Disco, and refreshments provided by The Cabin. The work and design follow a long period of planning and community engagement, which saw community groups, skate and BMX park users and the town council work with Babergh District Council to identify the right facilities for Belle Vue Park. Designed for all ages, the multi-use games area which was completed by contractor Caloo last November provides an enclosed tarmac surface to play games such as Five-a-Side Football and Basketball. Skatepark specialists, Gravity, worked with skate and BMX park users and the local community to design and build a concrete flow styleskatepark suitable for all abilities. Jonathan Sandford, Chair of Sudbury Skate Park User Group, said: “It’s great the new skatepark is now open to anyone who wants to give the setup a go. We’ve specifically designed the features to inspire skaters and bikers, regardless of their ability and to compliment both Belle Vue Park and users’ needs. We hope that more residents in Sudbury come out to give it a try!” Cllr Derek Davis, Babergh District Council Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “It’s very exciting to see something we’ve invested in inspiring people to get active and practice a new skill. Belle Vue Park holds a special place for the people of Sudbury, and we wanted to ensure that youngsters today have the facilities they want and need for years to come. “The multi-use games area and skatepark were specifically designed based on feedback and engagement with the community and I couldn’t be more delighted with the result. Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club The weekend of the 29th and 30th of June saw 106 members at Stoke-byNayland GC compete for the Club Championship (gross) and AJB Cup (handicap). This was played on Saturday on the Gainsborough course with a cut in the field down to the top 25 in both competitions. The Sunday was then played on the Constable course with the leaders going out at the back of the field. After the first day the leader in the gross competition was Callum Hensby (+1) with a score of 68, 3 under par. 3 shots back was Andrew Tokley (3) with a gross 71. The leader in the handicap competition was Del Prichard (6) with a nett score of 66, with Andrew second with a net 68. On the second day, the winner of the gross competition was the player who just made the cut, Scott Brace (1), with a gross score of level par 72. Unfortunately the overnight leader, Callum, returned a score of 77 to be pipped to the title by 1 shot. Until this year Andrew was still classed as a teaching professional although he gave this up a few years ago to work in the Stoke-by-Nayland finance office. Having relinquished this he became eligible to play in this event for the first time in a long time, so congratulations to Andrew for his excellent win. The overnight leader in the AJB Cup could not return a similar score on the Sunday, and a ball into the pond on the difficult 3rd put paid to his chances with a triple bogey 7. He finished in 7th place. With the 2 good rounds, Andrew Tokley also recorded the best nett score of 138. However, it is not allowed to win both trophies so the AJB cup went to Trevor Brace (12). Although Trevor scored a creditable 72 on the Gainsborough, a good second round of 68 on the Constable, to return an aggregate of 139, saw him beat Luke Crawley ( 69 & 71) by 1 shot. Trevor was one of the few players to return a better score on the Sunday than they had on the Saturday and this took him from 15th place overnight to the winning position. Steve Clark
