Christopher Centre celebrates 25 years of community engagement On October 19th 1994 the Christopher Centre was launched as a local resource centre and over the years it has become a focal point for local charities to hire office space and rooms for their events, meetings and activities. As well as preserving a fine Grade 2 listed building, the staff and trustees have developed a wide range of community activities from events and meetings to developing activities for local people including a singing group, a crafts group, a vegan supper group and a drop-in coffee morning for vulnerable and lonely people. In addition, the Community Depot is based there, providing local people and families in need with furniture and household goods. It is therefore more than just a building – it is a centre for all the local population.

On Friday 1st March staff, volunteers and trustees came together inviting members of the community to join them in celebrating 25 years as a centre at the heart of the community. Late last year the Centre gained funding from the Garfield Weston Foundation to refurbish the kitchen and rear lobby area to make it more fit for purpose. This event was held to thank friends and supporters for the help and assistance they had given over the years and to launch a range of events to celebrate 25 years of service to the community. Over a delicious homemade buffet lunch (prepared in the fantastic new kitchen,) attendees were encouraged to raise a glass and share in the history of the Centre and look to the future to feel encouraged about new possibilities to come. Plans to raise the profile of the Centre as a fantastic community resource available for hire and a hub of community support, provision and activity are in place. The team at Sudbury and Long Melford Community News will be featuring The Christopher Centre as it continues to celebrate 25 years. We will be reporting regularly on events and advising the community on ways that you can get involved to help /support this jewel in Sudbury’s Community Crown.

Searching for Silk Stories Thanks to National Lottery players a new project has launched, aimed at bringing Sudbury’s silk heritage to life and showing how silk shaped and continues to shape Sudbury. Sudbury Silk Stories, funded by Babergh District Council and £36,400 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, is looking for the stories of current and former employees of Sudbury’s silk industry. It will explore the history and changes that have taken place in the local industry, which continues to produce some of Europe’s finest silk. The project will record and share the experiences of silk mill staff, to create both a short film and an archive of interviews for the local community and for visitors to learn from. Sudbury residents and former silk industry employees can leave their stories of the industry at the Sudbury Silk Stories Memory Box, to be installed in Sudbury Library on Market Hill later this month. They can also contact the Project Coordinator to speak about their experiences in more detail via the Babergh website, or by leaving their contact details in the Memory Box. Cross Street: these terraced houses on Cross Street would originally have been constructed for Weavers working in the town’s silk mills.
Led by Babergh District Council and supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project will be recording interviews with local people associated with silk businesses in Sudbury over the coming months. The Sudbury based charity the Offshoot Foundation will team up with Ormiston Sudbury Academy and Thomas Gainsborough School, going into the mills to film interviews. The interviews will feature in full on the Sudbury Silk Stories website and clips will be included in a 10 minute film about the Sudbury silk industry screened in the town on 1 August and later at the Sudbury Silk Festival.

Babergh District Council have also joined forces with Gainsborough’s House Museum and the Sudbury Ephemera Society to expand the project to include an education resource for local schools and a collection of photographs and letters relating to Sudbury’s silk history. Cllr Margaret Maybury, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “It is a joy for me to be able to put this project into motion knowing some of the very talented and skilled people who have and are working within the silk industry. It is a fact that historically Sudbury’s reputation as a silk town is well known, but so few people are aware of just how active the industry is today. The wealth, prestige, skill and knowledge the industry has earned over the generations has shaped the town and is continuing to do so. Top fashion houses, royalty and celebrities from Great Britain to Milan to New York, work, use, and choose Sudbury silk. This is a real opportunity to celebrate this remarkable industry local within our community.” Robyn Llewellyn, Head of The National Lottery Fund, East of England said: “We’re delighted to support Babergh District Council to celebrate the fascinating heritage of the silk industry in Sudbury. The project provides the opportunity to gather stories about the people who worked in the industry and those who have worn Sudbury silks. Thanks to National Lottery players, local people can explore and play a part in preserving a significant part of this intriguing story.” The town has a rich history of silk, dating back to the 1770’s when silk weavers moved from Spitalfields to Sudbury and it currently has four thriving silk businesses, making it the UK’s largest silk producing town. It is one of East Anglia’s hidden gems and has a rich unspoken history; not many people realise the significance of silk in Sudbury, yet silk was woven there for both the wedding dresses of the Princess Royal and Princess Diana as well as Adele’s dress for the Brit Awards and Michele Obama’s dress that she wore when she visited the Queen. Silk woven in the town is also used in many of the major historic palaces and important buildings of England. Sudbury’s rich tradition will also be celebrated through the Sudbury Silk Festival in September.

Sunday classical! Sudbury Symphony Orchestra Concert – Sunday 31st March Sudbury Symphony Orchestra are delighted that Catherine May returns as soprano soloist to sing songs from the operettas. We start the evening with Dvorak’s My Homeland Overture, we then have three wonderful songs sung by Catherine May and we ďŹ nish with Dvorak’s New World Symphony. Catherine enjoys a successful career as a soprano soloist in both opera and in concert, stage musician and teacher. Her performances have taken her throughout Britain, Europe and the Americas having performed with many opera companies, including the English National Opera. As a concert soloist she has performed with orchestras such as the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and as s atge musician she has performed with the likes of the National Theatre. She has also performed at the Wigmore Hall. Dvorak’s New World Symphony is one of his most popular works with wonderful lyric lines and themes scattered throughout the work. It was written when he was at the height of his creative powers. The solo lines throughout the work are pure magic – with great contrasts between the lyric passages for the solo lines and the rousing full orchestra full speed sections. This is a symphony that is always a joy to perform and listen to and you leave humming the themes that Dvorak has so cleverly woven into the work. Dvorak’s My Homeland Overture, written in 1882, was part of a program of incidental music accompanying a patriotic play about the life of a Czech dramatist. The overture alternates themes from two Czech songs, one of which, “Where is my Homeâ€? is now the Czech national anthem. We hope you will join us for a very special musical evening. Rotary Club of Sudbury Having had a little time to recover from the hectic schedule of Rotary activities in December, the Club held a very successful President’s Concert Miscellany in St Gregory’s Church at the end of February, when almost ÂŁ500 was raised for local charities: the East Anglian Air Ambulance, Befriending Scheme and The Richmond Fellowship. Local musicians taking part included well-known organist Tom Cogan, soloists Elaine Henson and Stephen Mitchell, Hilary Spivey (playing bassoon), Robert Spivey (who plays horn as a soloist and in a number of orchestras), Choir4Hire (a group of singers from Sudbury Choral Society who offer songs and anthems for weddings, funerals and other occasions), Madrigalia (a Boxford based chamber choir founded in March 2018) and the very popular ďŹ ve-part ladies harmony group, The Accidentals, whose music ranges from the Andrews Sisters to Abba, so there was music to appeal to everyone. In March, Rotarians and many volunteers were involved in Crucial Crew activities, when over 700 primary school children learned how to deal safely with challenging situations they might meet during their lives. Now in its 19th year, Crucial Crew is a week-long event, demanding precise organisation and dozens of helpers. Sudbury Rotary is incredibly grateful to all the nonRotarians who help out every year, without whom the event could not take place. April looks like being yet another busy but interesting month for Sudbury Rotary, when the Club will welcome visitors from its ‘twin’ Rotary Club in Donaghadee, Northern Ireland, who will spend a weekend exploring Sudbury and Bury St Edmunds, joining with Sudbury members for dinner on Friday evening, a buffet evening at the home of President Tony Platt on the Saturday and attending the normal Sudbury Rotary lunch on Monday, where Donaghadee President, Val Goodchild will tell us more about their club and its activities. Speaker at the lunch-time meeting at The Mill Hotel on April 1 will be Rotarian David Taylor, showing slides about a recent holiday in Australia. David is a keen photographer and his holiday trips are always fascinating, as he and his wife travel to more unusual destinations. There is always great variety in our speakers and their subjects, and the ďŹ nal visitor for the month of April (on Monday 29), will be the Reverend James Ridge on the topic of “Life of the Chaplin General to Prisonsâ€?. On the rare occasions that a speaker is unable to attend last minute, the Club has a variety of other activities to call upon: and when the speaker was unable to attend one of the meetings in March, a quiz on Film Titles caused much hilarity, e.g. “Caught in a Zipâ€?! The Charter Night (birthday) celebration planned for 22 March had to be postponed when BBC Broadcaster Huw Edwards was called away to Brussels as part of the Brexit debate, so this event will now take place on Friday, April 26. The event is by invitation only and numbers are at capacity. Meetings of REG (the Rotary Evening Group) continue to be held every couple of weeks, around 7.30 p.m. under the leadership of Mags Mead. This informal get-together of men and women is for anyone who would like to be more involved in Rotary activities, but who does not have enough time to attend lunches. In 1984, Alan and wife Karin took over the business and it is now an award-winning garden centre which is run with their three children Hannah, Simon and Tristan. We took over Perrywood Sudbury (formerly the Wyevale Sudbury Garden Centre) on 24th September 2018, and it will continue to be a garden centre for the local area. Like Perrywood Tiptree it has a history of growing plants. Quiz boosts Sudbury’s Kernos Centre charity 129 people attended the Kernos Centre charity 12th annual quiz evening on Friday 22nd February in Long Melford village hall raising over £1,700. Winning team on the night were named ‘The Independent Group’, and included new Kernos Director Ian Shaw and former Director Gael Vigrass (who had driven down with husband Chris from Aberdeen that day to be there!). Chris Helliwell, the Quiz Master of the Cock & Bell in Long Melford, once again volunteered his services and really made the evening into a wonderful event, providing a selection of great quiz questions, along with his expertise and great sense of humour, all at no cost. He said “ The atmosphere at the Kernos quiz makes it so special, which is why I am very happy to run it every year.� Another comment overheard at the door was “You’ll love this - the food is Fantastic�. Annabel Wyatt, Administrator and organiser said “I would like to thank everyone at Kernos & the supporting friends who made such splendid food –it really would give a catering company a run for their money. It is a big effort made by many people who all donate their time and ingredients for free and is very much appreciated by all.� This year Sue Ayres, the Mayor of Sudbury, donated the minced beef from the Lavenham Butchers which was a big help.

The Kernos Centre charity in Sudbury was opened in April 2003. It provides counselling support services for adults, children and young people with emotional and psychological difďŹ culties. Ages of people helped range from 5 yrs to 93 yrs. Since it opened in April 2003 it has received over 3,572 referrals for counselling support, and provided 3,850 face to face counselling hours in 2018 alone. There is a wide range of needs including people who have experiences of domestic abuse, childhood abuse, depression, eating disorders, selfharming, and suicide attempts. These result in withdrawal and difďŹ culty in functioning in family life, employment, and in the community. Early counselling Interventions can prevent longer-term mental health issues and can give people a sense of themselves, and of what they can achieve, so that they can make positive choices in their lives. Chris Boatwright, Founder and Clinical Director said “Once again so many of the community supporting and attending was a real example of the community spirit which enables the Kernos Centre to continue. The quiz is not only a fun night but it is one of the ways Kernos looks to help with our desperately needed funding. The demand for counselling continues to grow,but the funding available this year looks to be very much decreased. The money raised will contribute to providing the much needed counselling support to people in our community. It is often said that these are ‘historic’ times in Parliament. However, most constituents would assume that word was referring to the passage of Brexit, with all its ups and downs. In fact, I would like to think that I recently participated in the passage of a Bill that could at least a little historic in terms of its future impact on social trends. I refer to the ‘Civil Partnerships’ legislation which I supported in its final stages last month, having also spoken at Second Reading (i.e. its very first debate). A Civil Partnership is a way for two people to show their commitment to one another, and to gain most of the rights reserved hitherto for marrying couples, without using the ‘traditional’ route offered by civil or religious marriage. However, at present, this form of union is only legally available to couples of the same sex. The purpose of the Civil Partnership legislation is to extend this right to heterosexual partners. When I first heard of this change my instinct was to question if this would be a ‘commitment lite’ way of conjoining. On reflection, and on hearing testimony from constituents and others who strongly support this option, I concluded that this would offer a new form of commitment to those who would otherwise probably make no such commitment at all. I should clarify that my wife and I chose to be married in church, using the traditional service, but it is a fact of life that millions of couples choose to live together without any formal binding of their relationship. In my view, far from ‘threatening’ marriage in church or even a registry office, for those who see marriage as outdated or too traditional (and I do not agree, but many feel that way) a Civil Partnership offers a way to bring greater stability to their lives – and those of any children they have. I also feel that this measure will become much more popular for generations to come. If that delivers greater stability and less family breakdown, that will be all to the good, and truly historic.

Everything that is sold at the farmers’ market has been produced by the person who is selling and all the stallholders come from within a 30 mile radius – this really is shopping local at its very best and we are look forward to seeing more and more very happy shoppers rediscovering what an amazing farmers market they have, once again, on their Long Melford doorsteps! Collaboration – A better approach to separation

Separating from a partner can be an extremely difficult time both emotionally and financially. In the past, the more traditional approach to Divorce has been for the parties to resolve their differences in the courtroom, but increasingly, with court delays, this process can often lead to increased stress and cost to both parties. The premise of dealing with separation ‘collaboratively’ is for the parties to agree to achieve a settlement through collaboration as opposed to making an application to the Family Court. In the collaborative process, each party instructs a specialist, collaboratively trained divorce lawyer and all negotiations and decision making takes place in a series of four way meetings attended by both parties and their divorce solicitors. Control is given back to the parties in the divorce to set their own timetable and agenda for these meetings rather than a timetable being imposed by the court. As the parties have a direct input into the agenda they will each be able to discuss issues most pressing to them. It is possible to bring in experts to the four way meetings, where required, such as Independent Financial Advisers to ensure that both parties have the correct assistance to help them make important decisions for the benefit of their family. There is far more flexibility in the Collaborative process than the more traditional court process and so it can often lead to a speedier resolution of issues and therefore reduced legal fees. If the parties have children it is essential that communication is maintained to enable the parents to be able to co-parent their children when they have completed the divorce process. One of the benefits of collaboration is being able to keep the children at the forefront of all discussions in the hope that the impact of the divorce on the children can be minimised. There is still the obligation on the both parties to provide full disclosure of their financial positions to enable the parties to be fully informed before making any decisions. However, the process of providing this information is more informal and less restrictive. Ultimately, the collaborative divorce process hopefully ends with an agreement being reached between the parties which they have both worked towards together rather than a decision being imposed upon them. District leaders support call for Government Rural Strategy

Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council leaders are supporting the demands of the Rural Service Network for central government to recognise the needs of rural communities and develop a Rural Strategy. The needs of communities in rural areas, which accounts for 17% of the UK population, are different from those in urban areas and are often not considered in central government decision making in the setting of ďŹ nancial grants or introduction of policies. Councillor John Ward, Babergh Council leader said: “It is time that central government acknowledges the challenges faced by district and parish councils, in trying to develop sustainable communities and thriving business economies but are hindered by polices that undermine the work we are trying to do. We’re often the poor relations in grant funding compared to urban area authorities.â€? Councillor Nick Gowley, Mid Suffolk Council Leader said: “The needs of our communities are key in the work that we do, and we need the support of central government to enable us to offer suitable and sustainable services and practices across our district. It is time that rural districts are given proper consideration and funding to meet those needs and offer the right level of service. Allocation of funds must be done on a fairer footing.â€? The Rural Service Network is the national champion for rural services, ensuring that people in rural areas have a strong voice - ďŹ ghting for a fairer deal for rural communities to maintain their social and economic viability for the beneďŹ t of the nation.

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Welcome to my news feed from the horses at The Shelley Centre. We are privileged to work here with so many interesting riders; the care we receive is first class (thanks to Lyn our stable manager) and we get to meet all sorts of humans. The live herd and myself and Babs enjoy meeting new volunteers and training them up into our ways. We also love the comfort and company of our long-standing helpers who come to understand us completely. So that we can feel relaxed and useful in our work Lyn organised a training day last month to remind our volunteers how we like to be handled, and how the Riding for the Disabled Association like its members to behave. ‘Health & Safety’, eat your heart out, we trot ahead of you here in this establishment. I like the cheerful colour of Charlie’s coat in my first photograph. He is chatting to our volunteer David whilst Bryn is being got ready for their lesson. How our riders do grow up! Charlie was just a small boy when he started coming to us, look at him now! Celebrating 30 years of our existence here at Shelley is quite something. I wondered what, as a blogger, I could throw in. Well, over the next few issues I shall get the folk here to tell me 30 reasons why they like coming to the Centre. Starting with two of MY riders (of course): No 1, Matthew “I like Ebony’s years.” Yeah, good man, Matthew, I like my ears too. No 2, Evie “ I like feeling my core muscles being used, and I really like knowing that when I’m sitting on Ebony (out of my wheelchair) I can still keep my balance”. Now for riders on Parys and Alfie: No 3, From Ross’s Mum “definitely the social side” and you can see this in my photo of Ross and Brittany on the sofa getting ready to ride. At last that precocious Chihuahua is preoccupied, leaving the computer unguarded for me to write this month’s news from the feline point of view. Most importantly, I must tell you about two cats, mother and daughter Fat Cat (I can hardly bring myself to type such a name!) and Betty. They have been with us far too long and need a quiet, understanding household to help them overcome their timid natures. A more dignified name for the mother wouldn’t go amiss either! Kenny would have my guts for garters if I didn’t tell you we have dogs too. The volunteers appreciated the warm spell in February but now it’s back to wellies and warm jackets as the rain trickles down the office window. Hopefully the Spring will be in full flourish for our Easter Fair at the Old School, Long Melford, CO10 9DX, 10-3pm on 14th April. Lots of lovely items for friends, family and your pets, a big raffle and tombola, refreshments, free parking and only 50p admission. The weather affects everything at the Sanctuary, especially our annual Open Day which has been hit by storms for the last two years. Consequently some of our gazebos were damaged beyond repair and we are in need of new ones. If you happen to know of a sturdy gazebo surplus to requirements we would gratefully give it a good home. Tech Savvy Brian’s Joyous Drive-In It was literally a joyous occasion when Newton Green Golf Club’s tech-savvy new captain drove off to celebrate the opening of his year in office. The rain clouds separated and sun appeared as he put his opening drive 183 yards down the fairway. Brian Joy has recently transformed the club’s information technology capacity, with all the latest aids now on board to push the 100-year-old organisation further forward, including a new web site. His joy was made even more complete when he and partner Peter Wordley won the day’s better ball competition. A 12-handicapper, he spent more than three decades in the managerial field of information technology marketing, before retiring to the Sudbury area. He had been a member of Purley Downs golf club in South London, and started golfing at Redhill and Reigate which, like Newton, is a James Braid designed course.

Work on Sudbury’s new skatepark in Belle Vue Park is soon to be complete Construction work on the BMX/skatepark has picked up the pace over the winter period and is now nearing completion. The new design which includes a sprayed concrete flow-style skate/BMX ramps, was developed based on feedback from Babergh District Council, Sudbury Town Council, community groups and skate park users to ensure the facilities would be fit for its purpose and location. The structural foam work stage, shuttering, coping and concreting are nearing completion with the new facilities on target to be finished in the Spring. The adjacent multi-use games area (MUGA) was completed in November 2018 and both facilities are expected to be officially opened to the public once the skatepark is complete. Jonathan Sandford of Sudbury Skate Park Users Group, said: “The new skate park will be a real asset for Sudbury town. It’s been specifically designed to inspire skaters and bikers, regardless of their ability and I think the features compliment both Belle Vue Park and users’ needs. Soon skaters and bikers alike will be able to head to Belle Vue Park and give the new setup a go!” Cllr Jan Osborne, Deputy Leader of Babergh District Council, said: “We wanted to make sure the skatepark was a place fit for those who’d use it. The community and skatepark user group in Sudbury have been instrumental in getting the new skatepark to the place it’s in today, and I’m confident that together, we’ve achieved just that. “It’s very exciting to imagine something we’ve invested in inspiring people to get active and practice a new skill on the slopes – watch this space!” Cllr Margaret Maybury, Babergh District Council Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “Belle Vue Park is very much cherished amongst the community and we wish to ensure that youngsters today will have the same feeling towards it in years to come. The skatepark design has been specifically tailored to our young people’s requests and I am delighted that they have come forward to discuss their thoughts with us.

Sudbury Library In Sudbury Library this year April is all about dragons. Our Sunday crafts will be dragon based where you can make a dragon one week, dragon puppets the next and slightly off the dragon track will be a super heroes craft session. For ÂŁ2 kids can have a dragon bag which contains all sorts of goodies, including craft activities, puzzles, colouring sheets. It will also have a write a short story or poem competition there will be 2 categories, Under 8’s and 8-10yrs. Throughout the month there is also a dragon egg hunt kids can enter for ÂŁ1. In the past we have run some very successful sew crafty sessions for children and adults, April is no exception we have a sew crafty session in the works but need to ďŹ nalise some details so keep an eye out when you’re in the library or give us a call for more information and to book your place. For Toptime this month we have our usual creative writing on the 2nd, Play reading “A Jolly Sinister Japeâ€? on the 9th, Book group is on the 16th and they will be reviewing “The Silk Merchants Daughter by Dinah Jeffries. Street Watch was formed in Sudbury and Cornard nearly fourteen years ago and has gone from strength to strength Street Watch is about local residents promoting good citizenship and supporting a better neighbourhood by patrolling our streets. They provide visible reassurance and appropriately engage in local issues that matter most in our community. The presence and activities of Street Watch members have a signiďŹ cant and positive impact on quality of life issues within our community. Street Watch members also liaise with our police to encourage positive information sharing and liaison as well as the Community Wardens to advise of ytipping, excessive litter and abandoned trolleys. Street Watch is a way of reclaiming back our streets and open spaces from those who may wish to engage in activities that strengthen our communities. Over the last few years the volunteers have undertaken a lot of work with our young people by talking to them while out on patrol, visiting those areas where concern by local residents had been identiďŹ ed. We are now going into schools to give talks on keeping safe. On one occasion two of our volunteers visited Pot Kiln School and gave a very successful talk, including play acting, with the children. The people of Sudbury and Cornard are now beginning to get to know our volunteers and often come up for a chat. We are hoping that this relationship will help our residents and shop keepers feel safer and more secure. Just recently Long Melford decided to join our group. However, to ensure that we can continue to be successful we need more volunteers. Pat’s Dayz Owt We had a most enjoyable afternoon at Chelmsford Civic theatre at the beginning of March, when we saw an excellent performance of “My Fair Lady”, and by the time this comes into print we will have had our first holiday with two coaches going to Weston Super Mare. Fingers crossed for some lovely weather whilst there!!! Looking ahead to next month, we have a trip to a place called “5 Miles from Anywhere”, a beautiful destination on a sunny day placed beside the River Ouse, and if warm enough to eat outside, you can even stay out in the air and enjoy your lunch at tables on the lawn. If too cold, there is a lovely conservatory as well as the main restaurant. Following lunch we continue our journey for time in Ely. Our boat trip on the Deben in May is already fully booked, sorry about that, but we have filled the boat!! The Bure Valley railway trip following a lunch, ending in Wroxham still has a few seats available at the time of writing, as does later trips to Hastings, Hunstanton, Sheringham, Skegness and Great Yarmouth. Our 2nd 5 day holiday in the autumn is already fully booked for Warners, Hayling Island, staying at Sinah Warren hotel.

Putting Art into the Heart of the Community Babergh District Council has approved a cash injection of £100,000 to help regenerate St Peter’s Church – to create a welcoming self-sustaining venue at the heart of Sudbury that provides enriching cultural and social experiences, bring its community together and deliver a lasting legacy for the area. Cabinet Members meeting agreed, on 7th march, to allocate funds from Business Rates Retention finance to support St Peter’s Regeneration Project – significantly helping the centre in meeting their National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) match funding target of £500,000 by March 2020. If successful the overall project value, with National Lottery Heritage Fund support, will be in the region of £2.5m. St Peter’s will be a fantastic cultural venue based in the iconic grade 1 listed St Peter’s Church in the heart of Sudbury’s town centre and is the largest public community and events space in the town. It already attracts up to 60,000 visitors each year and once the project has been completed looks to attract a further 40,000 visitors.

The project, which include repairs, new essential facilities and refurbishment works, supported by the Sudbury Vision for Prosperity programme, looks to further develop the centre into a thriving community space, providing a space for families, young people and businesses as well as creating employment opportunities and attracting further investment into the town centre The improved facilities will allow St Peter’s to offer a wider range of venue options suitable for all age groups and commercial use, and enable a wider variety of events and activities for the whole community – including the opportunity to showcase the heritage of Sudbury, creating an enhanced visitor experience for local residents and tourists alike. As well as providing a place for the community to meet, exchange ideas and share memories, the regeneration project will also create new opportunities for employment, volunteering and developing young people’s skills and experience. Cllr John Ward said; “This is a wonderful project and we are thrilled to be able to support it. The regeneration looks to not only breathe fresh life into a well known and loved building but also into the community it serves. “Our market towns need support to attract visitors whilst also supporting residents. These planned improvements will open up the venue up to a much wider variety of events and functions that will really bring the community together.” CCT Development Officer for the project, Allison Burke, said “We are extremely grateful to Babergh for this very generous grant. It will significantly help with the need to meet our match funding target for the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and help us to unlock funding from other potential funders.” The Regeneration Project has been supported by the Churches Conservation Trust and the Friends of St Peter’s and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

News from The Quay Theatre The theatre show ‘Shake, Rattle and Roll’, by the UK’s premier vocal quartet, The TestostaTones, visits the Quay Theatre in Sudbury on Saturday 13th April. Following a sell-out appearance in 2018 with their show ‘The Story of DooWop’, the group are returning to explore “what happened next” for music in the late 1950s, when the likes of Bill Haley and the Comets, Elvis Presley, Louis Prima, Chuck Berry and others bought an electric and electrifying new sound to the world. The show will be performed as a live “broadcast” from a radio studio and presented by the host for the evening, radio show disc jockey Chuck Anderson. The D.J. “spins the discs” of some of the biggest hits of the genre which will be performed live by The TestostaTones, a group who have sung for the Queen, Olly Murs and live on BBC Radio 2 as well as counting Jeremy Vine ‘Professor of Pop’ and world music authority Paul Gambaccini among their fans who said of the group “How considerate of the TestostaTones to pay tribute to my local Bronx hero Dion. World Down syndrome day heralds start of arts course for adults with learning disabilities Booking is now open for a new arts course aimed at adults with learning disabilities, including Down syndrome. The 10-week course is run by arts charity, Suffolk Artlink and starts next month. It offers students in Bury St Edmunds, Lowestoft and Ipswich the chance to enjoy exploring a variety of art forms whilst developing creative and life skills. During the course, students will be working one day per week alongside professional artists to create decorative artwork including colourful banners and 3D installations. The students’ work will be on display at festivals around Suffolk this summer, including First Light Festival in Lowestoft and Maui Waui Festival in Theberton. Charlie Meyer, Suffolk Artlink Project Officer, said: “We create a warm, encouraging atmosphere where people can flourish through being creative. Cabinets were often works of art, crafted in the ďŹ nest woods using precious metals & stones. They were “cabinets of curiosities & theatres of memoryâ€? largely for men. At the same time cabinets were being carved as dolls houses for women & children complete with contemporary contents & these provide us with valuable insights into everyday life. ANNA HALLETT is a historian born in the Netherlands. She has made a special study of the decorative tile industry in the Ironbridge Gorge and has published books on almshouses, market and marketplaces & their buildings.
