Are we ready for a Festival?

Hadleigh is a great community to be part of, isn’t it? How lucky we are to live here, especially in this crazy, uncertain world. We can go for a walk along the river, the Railway Walk, up Constitutional Hill or through Wolves Wood to see the beauty of nature. We can enjoy the Christmas Market and feel part of something bigger than ourselves. At HEAT (Hadleigh Environmental Action Team), we think it’s time Hadleigh came together ÖÜÖÞã ÖãÙ ìÚąÙ áÞàÚ éä ØÚáÚ×çÖéÚ éÝÚ áäëÚáî ÍÞëÚç ½çÚéé éÝÖé Ĝäìè éÝçäêÜÝ äêç éäìã ìÞéÝ Ö river festival. All festivals need to be fun and get everyone involved, so this will be a festival for the whole of Hadleigh, and especially for children, young people and families. We’re also thinking of all the people on our new estates. There’s a lot to organise, so it won’t be until the summer of 2027, with events leading up to a weekend carnival and fun activities. The kinds of things people are suggesting include games, puppet making, theatre performances, music, singing and dancing, painting and photography exhibitions, poetry workshops and essay competitions. We also plan to hold volunteer sessions to look after the river and its banks, nature walks, talks and displays on the history and ecology of the river and town, and talks by national experts. Hopefully, Hadleigh sports clubs will join in and organise some games too. There’s no shortage of ideas. There’s lots to think about, lots of decisions to make, and lots of people, groups and organisations to get on board. With your help, we are Continues overleaf

Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh 2026 The next Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh, our town’s big summer event, will take place on 6 June " Äé Þè äçÜÖãÞèÚÙ éä çÖÞèÚ ÛêãÙè for the Friends of St Mary’s Church, whose charitable purpose is to help maintain and improve the fabric of the church and Deanery Tower, two of the most important historic buildings in Hadleigh. HGH is the charity’s biggest fundraising event, and after last year’s disappointing takings (largely thanks to an inaccurate weather forecast), we are all keen to help the charity top up its funds in 2026, and if possible surpass éÝÚ çÚØäçÙ ×çÚÖàÞãÜ éêçã äêé Þã Ä Öâ ÚèåÚØÞÖááî åáÚÖèÚÙ éä ×Ú Ö×áÚ to announce that Benton End will once again be open as part of HGH, ÖãÙ éÝÞè ìÞáá ×Ú ßêèé Ö×äêé éÝÚ ěçèé äååäçéêãÞéî Ûäç åÚäåáÚ Þã ÃÖÙáÚÞÜÝ éä see the redesigned and newly completed garden restoration. Ä ÖáçÚÖÙî ÝÖëÚ æêÞéÚ Ö ÛÚì ÜÖçÙÚãè äã éÝÚ áÞèé Ûäç ãÚíé îÚÖç ×êé ìÚąçÚ always keen to add some more, whether from previous years or new entries. There are no criteria by which gardens are judged “worthy” or not – everyone is most welcome, whether the garden is big or small, a plantsman’s paradise or not. A New Creative Hub for Hadleigh Äã éÝÚ ÊØéä×Úç ÚÙÞéÞäã äÛ ¾äââêãÞéî ÉÚìè ìÚ announced our plans to purchase and develop a èÞéÚ Þã éÝÚ éäìã éä ØçÚÖéÚ ÃÖÙáÚÞÜÝąè ěçèé åêçåäèÚ built community workshop. This new facility would not only secure the long-term future of the Men’s Shed, but also provide a versatile and welcoming space for other like-minded community groups to use and enjoy. The proposed workshop, studio and kitchen will be ideally suited to a wide range of hands-on and creative activities, including arts and crafts, woodworking, modelmaking, woodturning, needlecraft and knitting, repair cafés, mindful making, cooking lessons, adult education and more. KS2 children celebrate the season at the Christmas Cracker Festival HCPS took a group of KS2 children to the Christmas ¾çÖØàÚç ÁÚèéÞëÖá äã ÏÝêçèÙÖî ¿ÚØÚâ×Úç Öé ÄãèåÞçÚ ÎêĚäáà ÄåèìÞØÝ ¼áäãÜ ìÞéÝ äéÝÚç èØÝääáè éÝÚ ØÝÞáÙçÚã éääà åÖçé Þã circus skills, archery, boccia, cricket, paddle tennis and daily mile. All pupils put together a dance routine and performed it to all the parents. Much fun was had by all, including wearing their Christmas jumpers and putting everyone into the Christmas spirit!

Hadleigh Old School Plans for 2026 As this publication goes to press, we are about to host two more performances of Sherlock Holmes Smells Evil by the Common Ground Theatre Company. The run stands to break house records with over 300 people watching live theatre in our Bridge Street venue. Thank you to everyone who attended, we appreciate your support. The Common Ground players are one of the last touring companies in East Anglia, producing original work, without subsidy, with their success based on telling stories with a great cast of actors, musicians and writers, in a tradition that goes back to the touring troupes of Shakespeare’s time. Looking ahead to 2026 we are pleased to announce that this Easter, Hadleigh Old School will be staging a major art retrospective dedicated to artist Joan Warburton, some 30 years since her passing. The friend of Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines was a mainstay of their East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing in staying with them at The Pound in Higham and at Benton End in Hadleigh. Joan Warburton was considered one of the most distinct and individual of the art school alumni and her painting compared to Morris’s by the Tate Director in 1984. Co-curated by journalist and editor, Lindsay Fulcher, and Hadleigh Old ÎØÝääáąè ÄÖã ÂçêéØÝěÚáÙ éÝÚ éÞéáÚ äÛ éÝÚ èÝäì Þè Ą¾äâÚ Þãéä éÝÚ ÂÖçÙÚã Maud’, a quip Arthur Lett-Haines made shouting up to Joan who was looking out from a bedroom window at The Pound, his home with Cedric ÈäççÞè ¼ÛéÚç éÝÞè èÝÚ ìÖè ÖáìÖîè àãäìã Öè ĄÈÖêÙÞÚą ÏÝÚ ÚíÝÞ×ÞéÞäã Þè being staged with the kind permission of the O’Malley Estate (including Joan Warburton’s son, Twig, and her great niece, Carolyn Jenkins) with provenance provided by the family’s long-standing agent, Sally Hunter Fine Art. The image displayed here is a view of Stoke By Nayland where Joan lived for many years with her husband, the ceramicist Peter O’Malley. The exhibition will feature works from Private Collections, unseen for many years. ÏÝÞè ÅÖãêÖçî èÚÚè éÝÚ ěçèé ÒÚáá Being Fair to be staged in recent éÞâÚè Äé ìÞáá ×Ú äåÚã Ûçäâ Öâ éä 4pm on Saturday 24 January, with free entry and a warm welcome to anyone from Hadleigh and the surrounding villages. The main aim of the day is to provide an opportunity to try out activities in taster sessions run by professionals in the health and wellbeing sector; there will also be talks about places to volunteer and a change to chat informally with local organisations. Who is Aurora?

A group of volunteers who came together via a peer support group for mental health and now have self-funded the Aurora Well Being Fair to showcase more positive methods to improve life through being active.

What to expect at the Fair?

A welcome desk in the Ansell Centre – with receptionists able to explain the chart of sessions taking place during the day. Light refreshment café service ongoing throughout the day. The session providers are giving up their Saturdays so please be kind and respectful, allow for ĜÚíÞ×ÞáÞéî

What can I experience?

Hadleigh Tennis club The winter weather has not stopped the hardy members of the tennis club from getting their exercise on a Sunday morning and Tuesday evening. Only rain or frost will stop us from getting down to the tennis courts and having a run around and a few sets of competitive tennis. Pick up your racquet and come and join us, from 9.30 am on a Sunday, 6.30 pm on a Tuesday. The ladies team are enjoying their Saturday morning league matches and are currently in a mid-table position in their division. Members and friends enjoyed a Christmas social evening at the rugby club, which was a great chance to meet up and have a chat which we don’t always get round to while playing. Many thanks to the Rugby club for use of their club house. At the time of writing members are looking forward to enjoying some mince pies to brighten up a Sunday morning before Christmas and on Boxing Day, weather permitting, when we hope to blow away the cobwebs with a few games of tennis. Looking forward to yet more tennis in the New Year do come and join us!

Failure to meet these requirements means the e-bike must be taxed and insured as a motorcycle or moped. Electric powered vehicles have been used to snatch mobile phones and valuables from pedestrians on pavements, making this a concern to Police. Riders risk injury to themselves, members of the public including pedestrians, as well as damage to property. A teenage male on an electric motorbike was responsible for some recent doorstep parcel thefts in Hadleigh (identity now known and a report going to the police youth justice service). ÏÝÚ ěçèé ÚëÚãé äÛ éÝÚ Øáê×ąè ×êèî Christmas schedule took place at the lighting up ceremony on 6 December when members manned a stall at the craft fair in the town hall. Club member, Steve, also known as Father Christmas was in his grotto to entertain the children [see photo left]. The Rotary stall åçäëÞÙÚÙ Ö çÖĞÚ Ûäç Ö ¾ÝçÞèéâÖè ÝÖâåÚç and the winning ticket was drawn by the Mayor, Sue Monks [see photo below]. The winner was a lady called Megan. Mark not only looks at the attractive building – one of Hadleigh’s delights – but also relates its ownership and occupancy over the years. ÇÞèéÚÙ ÂçÖÙÚ ÄÄ ÖãÙ ÙÚèØçÞ×ÚÙ as 16th century in origin, a recent architectural report tells that part is at least a century earlier. However, it is the mid-17th century carvings featured on the façade that make the Flying Chariot stand out and it is thanks to Kit Glover that photographs of these fascinating decorations accompany Mark’s most interesting story.

Hadleigh Local Studies Workshop is currently researching biographies to accompany the memorials in St Mary’s Church. After a busy life at ÄåèìÞØÝ Þã # ìÖéØÝâÖàÚç ÖãÙ ÜäáÙèâÞéÝ Ïä×ÞÖè ÎÚÖçèäã çÚéÞçÚÙ éä Hadleigh. Apparently, he was involved in setting up the church organ and when he died aged 82 in 1767, he left his music and choral settings for publication, which would suggest that he had been the organist and choirmaster. A National Vision, A Local Impact: Supporting young people in Hadleigh by the Porch Project Team The National Youth Strategy has just been launched by the Government. A long-term plan to give young people across England more support, opportunities and wellbeing. At its heart, it’s really simple: young people need safe spaces, trusted adults, fun activities, mental health support, and a real say in the services that are for them. Here in Hadleigh, we’re seeing that in action at Hadleigh Youth Centre. Based right on the High Street, Hadleigh Youth Centre is a welcoming èåÖØÚ Ûäç îäêãÜ åÚäåáÚ ÖÜÚÙ $ Äéąè èäâÚìÝÚçÚ éä ØÝÞáá âÚÚé friends, have a laugh, take part in activities, or just be themselves. For many Hadleigh and area residents, the festive season isn’t complete without their yearly pilgrimage to Ipswich’s New Wolsey Theatre for its legendary Rock ’n’ Roll pantomime. This season’s production is a reimagining of the classic tale Beauty and the Beast. Of course, the show is a platform for an endless stream of rock and pop classics performed by the live band. The Probus group is a national organisation. The local group meet once a month for a lunch for retired, semi-retired individuals providing fellowship, social activities, and opportunities to expand interests. The more senior (in age) of our Town are able to meet up and chat over some nibbles and refreshments. Then the children arrive after school and are able to have a tea with drinks and cake to follow. The energy and enthusiasm of the volunteers is staggering. This is community at its best. As an adult, you forget the excitement of being äêé Þã éÝÚ ÙÖçà ÖãÙ ìÞéÝ Öáá éÝÚ ¾ÝçÞèéâÖè èéêĚ ÜäÞãÜ äã ËêçÚ âÖÜÞØ The stallholders, shops and volunteers made this event a fantastic celebration for our Town. The day after the Lighting Up ceremony, the Hadleigh Orchestra held at concert at St Mary’s, and all was welcome with mince pies and mulled ìÞãÚ äã ÖççÞëÖá Äé ìÖè ëÚçî áÞëÚáî ÖãÙ ãäé ßêèé ×ÚØÖêèÚ äÛ éÝÚ âêááÚÙ wine! We sang carols in between the orchestra playing some beautiful music with students from the High School also taking part. When the descant was required during the singing of carols, St Mary’s was awash ìÞéÝ éÝÚ ÖãÜÚáÞØ ëäÞØÚè äÛ äêç ÖâÖïÞãÜ ÃÖÙáÚÞÜÝ áÖÙÞÚè Ä àãäì ¼ããÖ

Äé ìÖè Ö ìäãÙÚçÛêá äØØÖèÞäã éä ØÚáÚ×çÖéÚ éÝÚ ìäçà äÛ Öáá äêç ØÝÖçÞéÞÚè ÖãÙ ëäáêãéÖçî Üçäêåè Þã ÎêĚäáà and be one of the 15 community carol services taking place across the UK as part of Together at Christmas. Children from local schools read testimonies from those who had received help and support from äçÜÖãÞèÖéÞäãè Þã ÎêĚäáà ÖãÙ Ýäì ÞâåäçéÖãé ÖãÙ áÞÛÚ ØÝÖãÜÞãÜ éÝÞè ìÖè There were sea shanties from the Lowestoft Longshoremen, a gospel choir and a poem written and read by Charlie Haylock as well as carols to be sung. Now, enough looking back, let’s all look forward to another bumper year in Hadleigh Town with plenty of fun, laughter, family, friendship and lots of wonderful events to attend and be part of this amazing community we call home. Sadly, after 25 years of sociable get togethers creating wonderful merchandise to support the St Elizabeth Hospice, the Country Threads group had its last meeting in December 2025. The group has been making attractive items for this much needed good cause for over 20 years. With dwindling attendance and rising costs, it was no longer viable for the group to continue. A cheque for the balance of their funds was presented to the Hospice shop on Foxall Road where much of their seasonal craft items were sold. Thanks are due to Mavis Gordon (photo left) and the many members, past and present, who have contributed to the success and longevity of the group giving leaving them with lots of happy memories to treasure.

The way our waste is collected will be changing this year. The last government introduced plans to increase the levels of recycling at the kerbside following the Environment Act in 2021. This means that as from June 2026 we will have glass, food waste, cartons (Tetra Paks) ÖãÙ åáÖèéÞØ ěáâ ØäááÚØéÚÙ Öè ìÚáá Öè ØêççÚãé ìÖèéÚ We will be given two new bins so that in total we will have: Black bin - ÜÚãÚçÖá äç çÚèÞÙêÖá ìÖèéÚ éÝÚ èéêĚ ìÝÞØÝ ØÖãąé ×Ú çÚØîØáÚÙ Blue bin – plastic, glass, metal tins, cans and foil (crushed up) and cartons (Tetra Paks) Black bin with green lid – paper and cardboard, this is to keep it dry. Properties with limited space will be provided with a bag for paper and cardboard. Food bin and small food caddy for the kitchen – food scraps such as åáÖéÚ èØçÖåÞãÜè ÛçêÞé ÖãÙ ëÚÜ ×äãÚè éÚÖ ×ÖÜè ØäĚÚÚ ÜçäêãÙè ×çÚÖÙè and dairy produce. Brown bin – garden waste by subscription at £69 per year. Trees re-planted near Calais Street

Babergh has re-planted some fruit trees on Calais Street at the bottom of the footpath next to Pykenham Way which had sadly died because of the drought last year. We’re hopeful that with help from local people these new trees will survive. There are plans to mulch the trees, putting wood chippings around the base of each one which should help to keep the soil around their çääéè âäÞèé ÖãÙ Ö ØäêåáÚ äÛ çÚèÞÙÚãéè ÝÖëÚ ÖáçÚÖÙî äĚÚçÚÙ éä ÝÚáå ìÞéÝ watering if the weather is dry. They revealed their musical skills in playing several folk tunes, some of which they had composed themselves. The range of instruments was impressive and included many we had not seen before, including the crumhorn, bandoneon, hammered dulcimer and the foot bass. We hope to welcome the musicians for a return visit next year. December 15 The Social Club Christmas Party during which small gifts were presented to Sue and Rob Keeble in appreciation of the work they have put in through the year.

Layham Festive Fair

Held on 6 December, the Layham Events Group Festive Fair, was a great success. The village hall ìÖè ěááÚÙ ìÞéÝ ÚÖçáî ¾ÝçÞèéâÖè shoppers looking for unique gifts. Local crafts including pens, turned wooden crafts, preserves, cakes, original art, Christmas decorations, and photographic gifts were snapped up. Many took ØÝÖãØÚè äã éÝÚ çÖĞÚ éäâ×äáÖ water to wine, guess and of course guess the weight of the Christmas cake. Children and parents were drawn by books and jigsaws as well as the soft toy lucky dip. The event raised over £750 for local causes and we would like to thank the many who volunteered or contributed gifts and prizes. Special thanks also to The Queen’s Head and The Marquis for their continued generosity and support.

Hadleigh Hares Road Races 2025 Sunday 23rd November saw the annual Hadleigh Hares road races. This year the 10 mile race had a new sponsor in Abacus Fire and Security, the John Chisnall 5 miler was once again sponsored by M Chisnall and Sons, while we were once again indebted to Plant Parts for their invaluable contribution to the Junior 2km event. The races have always been popular with this year being no exception. All 500 places for the senior events had been sold weeks in advance, with over 100 joining the waiting list in the hope of catching a cancellation. We also had a record number of juniors signed up which bodes well for the future of our sport in the town. These races are notorious for their weather and road conditions, and although there were no gales this time around, there was certainly plenty of rain. Parts of all three courses were underwater in places giving it almost the feel of a cross country event. ÁÞçèé äĚ ìÚçÚ éÝÚ ßêãÞäçè äã éÝÚÞç àâ ØäêçèÚ êèÞãÜ éÝÚ çÞëÚç åÖéÝ Starting at main race HQ at the football ground, the juniors got a good èÚãÙ äĚ ÖãÙ ìÚçÚ ìÚáØäâÚÙ ×ÖØà èêçåçÞèÞãÜáî æêÞØàáî ×î éÝÚ ÖÙêáéè ìÖÞéÞãÜ éä çÖØÚ ÐãÙÖêãéÚÙ ×î Öã Úãäçâäêè åêÙÙáÚ Öé ÏäååÚèěÚáÙ Bridge, the winning juniors came home in seemingly no time at all. The winning boy was George Smith, an U16 runner from Framlingham ÁáîÚçè ìÝä ěãÞèÝÚÙ Þã ßêèé # âÞãêéÚè èÚØäãÙè ÁÞçèé ÜÞçá ìÖè ½êçî Pacers’ Bethan Southwood in 8 minutes dead. With ages ranging all the way down to U8 in 2 year stages there were plenty of winners, and every athlete took home a medal and their selection from the treats on äĚÚç Öé éÝÚ ÚãÙ Plant Parts Director, Linda Kerridge very kindly agreed to come down and hand out the trophies to all our junior age group champions. Next up was the Abacus Fire and Security 10 Mile race. This does have the reputation of being a challenging event, using the roads out towards Hadleigh Heath and Shelley. There is a lot of climbing and coupled with the ankle deep water right across the road in places, this year was particularly hard going. Chestnuts is a well established club in Hadleigh, meeting every third Thursday of the month throughout the year. We gather in the community room of the Hadleigh United Reformed Church at 7.30pm. (please ring number below in case of late changes) Approximately every alternative month we have visiting demonstrators or club members helping to increase or improve our techniques and to provide inspiration for future projects. Hadleigh Hares news Winter is upon us, and that means we are well and truly into the cross-country èÚÖèäã ÏÝÚ èÚØäãÙ ěíéêçÚ of the season took us to the lovely Sutton Heath, near Woodbridge, on 30 November. This single-lap route takes runners across the heath, past the pigs, and through the occasional puddle. What we hadn’t bargained for was just how sandy it would be – it felt more like running on a beach! ÒÚ ìÚçÚ çÚÖááî åáÚÖèÚÙ éä ěÚáÙ Ö Ûêáá éÚÖâ äÛ ÃÖçÚè Ûäç éÝÞè ÚëÚãé ÏÝÚ ladies’ team consisted of Ellie Landridge-Brown, Elaine Turner, Nathalie Hooper, Fiona Holland and Belinda Godbald. The men were Kevin Long, James Woolley, Tom Cowley, Richard Cowley, Alli Maclean, Rob Taylor, ËÖêá ½Öçéäã ¼ãÙçÚì ¾çäèè ÖãÙ ÎÖâ ¼èÝÙäìã Äé ìÖè ÜçÚÖé éä ìÚáØäâÚ newcomers to cross country, all of whom embraced the challenge ØäâåáÚéÚáî ÅÖâÚè çÖã Öã äêéèéÖãÙÞãÜ çÖØÚ ěãÞèÝÞãÜ éÝ Þã Ö ëÚçî ØäâåÚéÞéÞëÚ ěÚáÙ Next up are the Cross-Country Championships on 4 January, which will be held in Hadleigh. Runners can look forward to a “technically ØÝÖááÚãÜÞãÜĈ course. We also hosted our annual 5- and 10-mile races in Hadleigh on 23 November. This well-attended and smoothly organised event would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our Race Directors, Deb and Andrew Stewart. After three years at the helm, they have decided to hang up their RD jackets and pass the baton on. The club would like to extend its sincere thanks to them both. On 4 December, Kevin Long was invited by a friend to take part in a Hyrox race at London’s ExCeL Centre. The Hyrox event consists of eight 1km runs, each followed by an exercise station – including rowing, weighted exercises, burpees and plenty of squats! Unsurprisingly, ÆÚë ÛÚáé éÝÚ ÚĚÚØéè Ûäç Ö ÛÚì ÙÖîè ÖÛéÚçìÖçÙè The event had a fantastic atmosphere and ran smoothly, despite ÖçäêãÙ åÚäåáÚ çÖØÞãÜ ÚÖØÝ ÙÖî ÆÚë ìÞáá ÙÚěãÞéÚáî çÚØäââÚãÙ giving it a go if it sounds like your sort of thing!
