Preparing for the future – finds the past When removing the current ancient Vestry floor of St Mary’s Church in Hadleigh, to make way for a newer version, builders uncovered several interesting artefacts. Amongst the varied collection of coins, stones and bone pieces was a silver halfpenny dated 1344. This hammered coin would have been in circulation during the ‘Florin’ issue period of 1344-1351. It was struck when the Black Death wiped out an estimated one third of the population. Other readily identifiable items in the collection include shells, and various coins; Victorian halfpennies (1874 – 1891), George V and VI pennies plus obsolete currency from the 1950’s. Several other interesting shapes and objects have yet to be identified. The collection will eventually be on display in the Sacristy. The new Vestry floor will be Ancaster stone laid in an attractive diagonal pattern. Conservation experts are currently restoring the wood panelling in the same room to enhance the original geometric designs. Follow the St Mary’s write up each month to keep up to date on the plans to prepare St Mary’s not only for future worship but also daily community activities in comfort.
