Babergh opens second Customer Access Point Babergh has announced its second pop-up Customer Access Point will be coming to Hadleigh, following the success of the Shotley initiative this year. The new Hadleigh pop-up opened for the first time on Thursday 18 October at Hadleigh Library. Residents will have the opportunity to meet Customer Service staff face to face at the pop-up once a week, in addition to visiting the council’s access points in Sudbury Town Hall and 54 Ipswich Street in Stowmarket. Access to IT equipment will soon be available for customers to use during the library’s opening hours. As part of this pilot scheme Babergh and Mid Suffolk staff will be at Hadleigh Library on Thursday afternoons from 1.30 - 5.00 pm for a period of three months. To make the service as convenient as possible, the pop-up gives residents the chance to sort their council and library needs in the same place. In coming weeks, there will also be permanent self-service iPads, providing anyone dropping by with access to online services for both councils. These will be available every day during the library’s opening hours. Cllr Derek Davis, Babergh District Council Cabinet Member for Organisational Delivery, said: “Improving customer service access remains a top priority for us and it’s great we’ve been able to continue the service which has worked so well in Shotley with a second pop-up Customer Access Point in Hadleigh. We understand that not everyone is fully comfortable using our services online and this work allows our residents to talk to a human face to face. “This project has enabled us to build on an excellent working relationship with Suffolk Libraries and will enable us to have a clearer picture of what our residents need.”

Capel Ladies Club Anniversary Dinner On 4th October 2018, Capel Ladies Club celebrated its Golden Anniversary, marking 50 years since its formation in September 1968. Nearly 50 members attended the evening which began with wine and canapés in the Vine Lounge. This was followed by a delicious two-course meal served in the Library which was decorated with gold trimmings and bunting, with gold cloths and centre-pieces of flowers and balloons on the tables! After the meal everyone retired to the Vine Lounge again and the evening drew to a close with the cutting of a celebration cake, (baked and iced by Audrey and Di respectively), and then the draw for the Golden Raffle took place. Current Chairlady Di Barker gave a short speech thanking the committee and all the members for their continuing support which she said has been the backbone and reason for the longevity of the Club over the years. In spite of its vintage Capel Ladies Club still has the same original aims – to provide the opportunity for ladies of all ages in the Capel area to gather socially, listen to invited Speakers and enjoy trips out as well as raising money for charities and supporting the local community. With the help from The Community Heartbeat Trust the Defibrillator has been installed in our iconic Phone Box, they also provided paint courtesy of PPG Coatings UK Ltd and delivered a training session, they will provide ongoing support in the future. Without the assistance from both these organisations we would not have been able to fund this vital and potentially lifesaving piece of equipment in our rural community.

Improving your hearing in time for Christmas By Karen Finch RHAD FSHAA FRSA Audiologist and Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre There is nothing like the festive season with one social engagement after another. From the Christmas office party, drinks with friends and the buzz of the family gathering on the big day, December is a time for fun and social interaction. But is it? For those experiencing hearing loss, this can be something of an annual nightmare, causing a variety of communication issues! Imagine if you can, being unable to hear speech clearly because Christmas music is being played in the background or not being able to hear the excitement of children opening presents because they are all talking at once and you cannot separate the sounds clearly. Imagine dreading Christmas dinner on a large table with 15 other people because you won’t be able to hear what is being said around you. These are issues a normal hearing person doesn’t normally even consider. In in six people in the UK have a hearing loss but the number is far smaller for those who have sought professional help from an audiologist such as myself.. Hearing aids can make such a difference to someone's quality of life at this time of year. Hearing aids are so much smaller and discreet than they ever used to be and packed full of amazing features that will help during the festive period. You may have thought that with so much noise at a party or family dinner, hearing aids would just make things louder, but modern digital hearing aids aren’t simple sound amplifiers. They are designed to filter out all the unwanted noise - like the clanging of dishes in the kitchen or the background music - and help you focus on speech. Features such as directional microphones work to reduce the amount of noise allowed to enter your hearing aids. In noisy environments, like at a Christmas party, the system will work to pick up the least amount of noise. If the noise is located behind you, your directional microphones will adapt to pick up sound from in front of you and dampen noise from behind you. If you or someone you know is struggling with hearing problems, don’t struggle through another festive season not being able to join in and have fun. I urge you to book a hearing test now and find out what could be done to help you in time for Christmas. This year five Hares took the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and marathon challenge, including first timer, Sara Taylor-Balls. Sara joined Pat Atwood to compete at Copenhagen in August while September saw Leon and Jake Hayward travelling with Andrew Stewart to Ironman Wales. Copenhagen is a beautiful city and the race takes advantage of both the city and the surrounding countryside. The swim is in a lagoon spanned by bridges which throng with noisy spectators. The bike course is a twisty and technical double loop north of the city and the run is through the picturesque old town and the harbour of Copenhagen. PAT: It was a 4 am start, the Metro so crowded with potential Ironmen, that the doors wouldn't shut. Everyone serious, this was no holiday. Looking over the lagoon the buoys were incredibly far away, and almost invisible. Six swimmers at a time raced into the cold lagoon. I had cramp towards the end but at least I avoided the jellyfish. The cycle ride was amazing, through the city, over some cobbles, then up the coast. It was very scenic, but no time to enjoy the view as you just have to keep going. Then “only� the marathon to go. After 17 miles it was time to walk. Slowly. Suddenly my daughter appeared having finished hours before. Come on Mum, time is short. You've got to run. Fast. 6 miles to go, and only an hour left. I had to sprint. It was tough, but I finished just 11 minutes before the final cut off. SARA: My race did not go to plan. Cramp in the swim, a painful back on the bike and a nightmare run due to severe indigestion. With eight miles to go my son cracked the whip. I was feeling pretty dizzy as I hadn’t been able to eat or drink for the past six hours. I made a super-human effort and started a slow jog, but still wasn’t going to make the 16 hour cut off. Feeling more and more despondent I had a mouthful of coke and felt better. I sprinted the last three miles and made it! Thank God! Tenby is proud of its Ironman, which is considered the hardest in Europe, embracing the day by turning it into one long party. The support is phenomenal with crowds lining the streets on the bike route, at times crushing in on both sides, and crowding the Tenby run course in a cacophony of boisterous support. Andrew, Leon and Jake all exited a kinder than expected swim fresh for the bike section through the beautiful Pembrokeshire National Park. Being Pembrokeshire there was over 8000ft of climbing with steep gradients and fast, narrow descents. The run is a beast. Uphill for two miles, down, and around the twisty town streets - repeated four times. Andrew and Jake both had difficult runs, battling the effects of unfamiliar nutrition and cramp, but all three Hares finished with good respectable times with Leon just going over the 11 hour mark – a huge achievement on such a brutal course. It takes eight months of intense training to prepare for Ironman; training up to twenty hours per week to build fitness and endurance. The challenge is immense but so is the sense of achievement. It is both life affirming and life changing, proving that ‘Anything Is Possible’.
Dedham Footpath Group Enjoy walking, meeting new people? Then why not come along to walks organised by the Dedham Footpath Group, we walk 4-5 miles on the first Sunday morning of each month from various locations. Sunday 4th November at 10.30am - meet at Hadleigh town centre (behind Partridges and the Co-op). The walk will be along footpaths and quiet roads to the popular village of Kersey where it is planned to stop for refreshments before returning by the same route. Overall time approximately 3 1/2 hours. The group welcomes all walkers and those with well behaved dogs, kept on leads at all times, are also welcome to join us. Lavenham Sinfonia A quiet warm autumn evening on September 23 and an audience of over 100 people saw the final concert of the 2018 season of the Lavenham Sinfonia. The evening was dedicated to the “High Baroque� and featured works by some of the greatest and most prolific composers of the era. Georg Phillip Telemann, George Frederick Handel and Johann Sebastian Bach. The evening opened with Telemann’s Concerto in D major which sparkled with passages for the trumpets and timpani composed as it probably was for a civic occasion. It was followed by an excellent performance of Bach’s solo Cantata “Ich habe genug� expertly sung by the baritone Mark Saberton who was returning to perform again with the Sinfonia following his acclaimed performance in last years performance of the Beethoven 9th Symphony. Mark was superbly accompanied by the Sinfonia with Kim Haan playing the exquisite solo oboe part. After the interval the Sinfonia performed a short suite of orchestral pieces drawn from Handel’s final oratorio “Jephtha� composed in 1751. Mark Saberton then made his second appearance with a superb rendition of 2 arias from Handel’s earlier oratorio “Samson�. The concert concluded with a sparkling performance of Bach’s last Orchestral Suite No4 in D major using a later version that included 3 trumpets and timpani in addition to the usual woodwind, strings and continuo. It provided an exciting end to a very successful season for the Sinfonia under the expert guidance of its Music Director Jeremy Hughes. Dates have been fixed for the 2019 season and are: Sunday 14th April, Sunday 9th June Sunday 22nd September – all at Lavenham Church. Do make a note of the dates and join us for a great new season

Youth Work Manager The Porch Project is a well-established Youth Charity providing services & support to young people aged 11 to 20 in Hadleigh, Great Cornard & surrounding areas. As a result of our growth and expansion the Trustees are recruiting for a new role of Youth Work Manager. Applicants will need to have a history in youth work together with leadership and exceptional people skills. Working in and supporting a small highly motivated team you will be responsible for coordinating the Porch Project’s youth work timetable ensuring that all activities fit our vision and values. The starting salary is ÂŁ25,000 pa for a 37hour week which will include some evening and weekend work. You will be based at our offices in Hadleigh, Suffolk but will be required to travel to other locations so access to your own transport is essential. Life at The Shelley Centre It would happen that our ‘Own A Pony Day’ took place on the wettest Saturday in October. However nine of our riders came to learn about stable management, tack cleaning, catching and leading in their ponies and, luckily, getting a ride down by the river before they were completely wet through. The nine horses and ponies were shocked at being asked to hack out in the rain and made their feelings known, which was a bit naughty of them. It’s lucky for them that we live in 2018. A hundred years ago every horse and pony was at work, come rain or shine, and no nonsense about it. Would they have noticed that the war had ended, I wonder? Horses, mules, camels, dogs, and homing pigeons, to mention just a few animals, were all made to risk their lives in WW1. Just before we all solemnly remember the end of that dreadful conflict there’s time to have a great laugh at our upcoming race night on 10th November. This is a hugely popular evening at Nayland Village Hall. Tickets cost £12.50, and include a fish & chips supper. There is a tote, which makes the ‘horses’ even more hotly followed, and the competitive atmosphere generates a lot of noise and laughter. Bring a gang of friends to test their skills racing wooden models along a taught string. Sounds easy? Ha ha, just you try! Very disconcerting for those of you who wanted to contact us over the last month, and I can imagine how it feels to be thwarted when wanting to make arrangements. We work hard here to save riders and their coaches feeling thwarted; sometimes success happens in very small almost invisible steps but a quick glance over one’s shoulder reminds us that progress is happening. Recently the autistic child who simply refused to go near a horse actually sat on the ramp and stroked Alfie’s muzzle, neck and withers. The boy had been coming here for 6 weeks, so this was a milestone for him and us. (He has had a ride on me, but I have to admit, I’m not as terrifying as a live pony.) James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk One factor above all is often cited as the reason why our modern politics seems to be unstable, and that is the freeze in wages many have felt since the 2008 financial crash. The argument is made - in my view rightly - that since then living standards for many have at best remained static, fuelling resentment and prompting support for populist leaders and agendas offering simplistic solutions. As the most striking examples of such populism, Trump delivers protectionism; Corbyn promises nationalisation. I believe neither approach offers anything other than a threat to jobs and prosperity, but not long ago such policies would not even have been considered. That they are mainstream again confirms we live in different times, requiring those of us in Government to spell out how we can ensure that our best days are ahead of us, not a thing of the past. Thus, I was delighted to hear the latest earnings figures showing the strongest UK wage growth for almost a decade. Many statistics can feel a little intangible – but better wage packets are anything but! And when you factor in the recent fall in inflation, and unemployment remaining historically low, there is much to be confident about. But it’s the wages news that matters, particularly if it means we may be entering a period of prolonged improvements in pay. To quote the Bank of England’s chief economist Andy Haldane: “there is more compelling evidence of a new dawn breaking for pay growth, albeit with the light filtering through only slowly.” Which brings me to Brexit. It’s perhaps because those who supported Brexit most passionately are driven by concern for sovereignty, and the return of legal powers to Parliament, that in my view too little is made of the most obvious potential upside of leaving the EU. I may have campaigned to Remain, but it seems irrefutable to me that if we both control immigration at more sustainable levels, whilst maintaining the inward investment that drives job creation, we should see further upward pressure on pay for UK workers. That would be a Brexit outcome all should welcome.

Pause For Thought The 10th of October was Mental Health Awareness Day. It is estimated that 1 in 4 people in any given year will experience difficulties with their mental health, and approximately 1 in 3 people will experience some issue in their lifetime. Mental health issues are not restricted to one particular type of person, class, race or gender, it is something that can affect anyone. Tragically, the biggest cause of death for men under the age of 35 is suicide, which can often be traced back to problems with mental health. Those who struggled in the past know that just like a physical injury can lead to ongoing weakness and susceptibility to further injury, the same can be true with mental health. Sometimes past darkness can reach into the present. As someone for whom this can be a reality, in those moments, it is faith in something bigger than myself which eventually pulls me out of the dark. The Christian faith does not say, ”There is light at the end of the tunnel if you just keep walking.” It speaks of someone who came as a light in the darkness and who will walk with us through it. That’s something we can all do for others, be a light that walks with them in their darkness. Perhaps, however, there is also someone greater we could look to in our struggles, Jesus himself said, “Come to me all who are wearied and heavy laden and I will give you rest.” Chris Todd

It has been an exciting season for Hadleigh Choral Society. Highlights include a well received performance of Elgar's ‘The Music Makers’ and ‘The Spirit of England’ at Snape, where they were joined by the soloist John Lill performing Rachmaninoff's piano concerto No.2 in C minor. Summer concerts included a wide range of lighter music; traditional, folk songs, a medley or two and an arrangement for SATB specially written by the conductor Christopher Phelps. These concerts are hosted by local churches and raise funds for a specific cause or charity. Another part of the excitement this year is that John Lill CBE has become their new President. Rehearsals are now under way for their Autumn concert when they will be performing Haydn's ‘The Creation’ which will be sung in English. This will take place at St Mary's Church Hadleigh (Suffolk) on 24th November at 7.30. Pedal To Paris 2018 - Final Update On Thursday 30th August 2018 Will, Lottie and Kerry from Hadleigh Physiotherapy and Richard from Highcliff Veterinary Practice joined around 300 cyclists setting off from Eltham Palace, London to embark on their 298-mile journey to Paris in support of The Royal British Legion. Rolling road closures allowed them to cycle through the English and French countryside to the heart of Paris without having to worry about traffic, junctions or red lights. The team had the opportunity to choose different pace Pelotons to meet their individual cycling needs. They could be social in group 3 or 4 or hang on back of a wheel in group 1 or 2. Warm welcomes were received as they passed through France, with many locals coming out to cheer them along. RosÊ and cake was served by local villages, with the Town Mayors personally greeting the cyclists. Whoever said it was flat between London and Paris was wearing rose tinted spectacles! The route was a challenge at times, encountering the Dover Hill at the end of 80 miles on Day 1 and a cheeky 8% climb called Baguette Hill, Day 2, post baguettes for lunch! The ride was supported by amazing Royal British Legion staff, ride Captains, mechanics, sports therapists and motor cyclist out riders. Plus, a historian to fill in the history of the route in relation to the World Wars. The route culminated in the awe-inspiring cycle towards the Arc de Triomphe and the honour of being part of the only cycle event apart from the Tour de France that the Arc de Triomphe closes for. The team then danced the night away in celebration at The Gala Evening hosted by the Royal British Legion to celebrate everyone’s success and money raised in support of the Armed Forces Community. Hadleigh Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) Active Wellbeing Service - Inactive2Active Physical activity is one of the very best things that we can do to keep feeling well and making the most of life. This is especially true for those of us who are already under the weather or feeling our age. After all being able to lift another 15kg at the gym is great but being able to lift up your grandchild or get to the shops for the first time in a year – now that’s life changing! From October there’s a new service, Inactive2Active, to help us get more physically active. Anyone, who currently isn’t active on a regular basis, can sign up but it’s especially suitable for those of us, who have a chronic condition, are getting on a bit or who are feeling a little low or stressed. Did you know that moving more is one of the very best ways to help improve your mental health? The first step is to see Janet Lawrence, from Suffolk Support, who will be holding sessions on Tuesdays at both Hadleigh and Boxford. Janet is a Physical Activity Advisor who will discuss your medical history, any barriers to being active and offer possible solutions. She will also discuss how you can get more movement into your everyday life. If you are interested in taking part in more structured activity such as going to a class, Janet will provide you with an activity menu with over 130 local, low intensity and quality checked activities such as walking groups, swimming and other aqua options, chairbased classes, tai chi, walking football, gym referrals, pilates and yoga (which can also be chair based) to name but a few. There are also various cardiac and cancer specific classes to aid in rehabilitation and the road back to health and fitness. She will also encourage you (she’s great at encouragement) and get you over those first steps that make us all a bit anxious. This could mean her booking you a place (usually as a free taster), linking you up with a buddy who could meet you at the door, finding out what you need to wear, parking arrangements etc. Seeing Janet is free and adding more movement into your daily life or taking part in walking activities costs nothing. If you choose to attend a class there will be a charge but the activities on the menu have been kept as low as possible with some as little as £2 So what’s not to like? Kersey Mill Newsletter Restoration works at the mill have had to come to a stop as October signals the setup for Santa and His Elves Workshop, one of the major events of the year for the mill. September saw an unprecedented number of mill open days with visitors coming from near and far who were able to witness actual works in progress completing phase 3 of the Hurst Frame restoration. Once Santa & the Elves have vacated we will start Phase 4 of the restoration during Januay. This phase will consist of reinstating the runner stones redressing them and building the stone furniture. The Hurst Frame looks so different now, we had all become very conditioned to seeing the dereliction as none of us will have ever seen the Hurst Frame in any other state. It has been repaired as per the original, this only made possibly by referencing & using some old photographs taken in the 1960’s. Fortunately some old photographs were available on the mills archive website showing images of the hurst frame that were complete . together with small signs and actual evidence means that the frame that is now in situ is as per the original. Visitors that have already seen the completed works have commented on the superb standard of craftmanship and thanks for this go to Bill Griffiths.

News from Kersey School Squirrels (Reception) Squirrels class have been getting used to the rules and routines in their class, enjoying a range of activities all about themselves and who they are. Next term they will be learning all about celebrations and festivals and will be preparing for our nativity in December. Hedgehogs (Years 1 and 2) Hedgehogs have had fun this half term learning about food and how to eat healthily, including making their own fruit salads which they all enjoyed! We have also been learning about Haiku's and writing our own Haiku's to describe the fruit we used for our fruit salad. Squirrels and Hedgehogs would like to invite the village of Kersey to come and see our dress rehearsal for our Nativity production on Monday 10th December at St Mary's Church, Kersey. To finish off our Tudor topic on Wednesday we are having a Tudor day filled with music, dancing and real Tudor food. In RE we have been thinking about how Jesus is a Saviour for Christians around the world, Christmas definitely came early as we have made Christmas Cards and created our own Nativity characters. In Literacy we transformed ourselves into Henry the 8th to write our own letter to Anne of Cleves to persuade her to come to England to marry Henry. Thankfully there wasn't too much talk about chopping her head off!!! Owls (Years 5 and 6) Owls class have completed their Bikeability certificates and are all now safe on the roads; they thoroughly enjoyed themselves despite cycling up and down the Kersey street to practise! We are continuing our topic of Ancient Greeks; we have learned more about Greek gods and goddesses as well as Greek houses and temples. Affected by Universal Wealth Management or a similar company? Holmes & Hills Solicitors has been approached by concerned customers of the former Universal Wealth Management company and other similar Trust creation companies following recent news coverage of potential fraud on the part of Universal Wealth Management. Holmes & Hills Solicitors can provide guidance on what to do if you are worried about the advice you or a relative have received and the Trust arrangements that you have put in place with Universal Wealth Management or another company. It started with good intentions: In recent years many people have made Wills and set up Trusts with a view to protecting their assets for their family. If set up correctly, a Trust can be a very flexible legal tool to meet a family’s long-term needs. However, many people have been poorly advised by some of these companies and have received a promise that the Trust they have set up will protect all or a significant proportion of their assets from the payment of care fees and Inheritance Tax. Companies made false promises and charged high fees: Customers have been advised to structure their assets in ways which may not achieve the purpose for which they have been created and many have paid more than £4,000 to have Wills prepared and to create some form of a Trust. Universal Wealth Management and other similar companies organised ‘information’ events throughout the country to which carefully selected members of the public were invited. Attendees received a talk about asset management and were encouraged to purchase the company’s products with tempting discounts if they agreed to sign up there and then. Some individuals that have used such services may not yet be aware that many complaints have been made by customers of such companies and that some of these companies are under ongoing criminal investigations by the police. One of these being Universal Wealth Management. How can this happen? It may come as a surprise that ‘Will Writing Companies’, ‘Estate Planners’ and ‘Inheritance Tax Planners’ can operate ‘unregulated’, which means that they are not all overseen by an independent body to whom they are accountable. This is very different to firms of solicitors, such as Holmes & Hills, which are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). Hadleigh & District Garden Club Friday October 12th 2018: Our final outing of the year was to John Barker's forest garden near Maldon, he had given us a talk on his project some time ago and we were keen to see it in action. John's father bought the six acre plot in 2010 when it was simply a field. Since then they have worked half a day every week, with the occasional group of volunteers, to develop the site over the last eight years using a method known as agroforestry which is agriculture incorporating the cultivation of trees. All the trees have been grown from seed or cuttings and all of them have been chosen for the contribution they can make in terms of their productivity. So they have planted walnuts, sweet chestnut, hazel, quince, crab apple, pine, eucalyptus, silver birch, plum and many more. Willow is grown for fencing and is also used as a wind break as the site is open and sloping. As well as other plants roses and blackberries have been planted for hedging, both for their fruit and to deter rabbits. They have hand dug ponds for irrigation and to encourage wildlife which is one of the major aims of their work. They have acheived a great deal in just eight years but this is a long term project and the next phase is to start to underplant the trees. This was a very different garden visit for the club with lots of new ideas to think about and well worth a visit in years to come. Our next get together on Monday November 12th 2018: After the wilds of Essex last month we are back in Hadleigh for this month's meeting. We welcome Fiona Edmond from Green Island Garden Ardleigh, who will be talking about landscaping and garden design. The final competition for the year will be 'a vase of autumn foliage', and of course there will be the raffle and plants on offer at bargain prices from the sales table. East Anglian Garden Group Our Autumn meetings began with a lively and informative talk from writer and organic gardener Val Bourne, ‘Peonies and Roses – A Marriage Made in Heaven’. She recommended planting roses, floribundas, which flower at the same height as the peonies, to give a level effect of colour. Val particularly prefers the Lactiflora Hybrids as they have a longer flowering period. She went on to dispel the myth that once planted, they cannot be moved, and that October is the perfect time for both planting and moving. She advised that they should not be planted too deeply, as the tubers need to feel the cold, in order to flower well the following summer. As an organic gardener, she chooses roses which are impervious to black spot, among them, David Austin’s Wild Eve’. Our next meeting, the AGM, on 3rd November, will have Rasvan Chisu speaking on ‘Castles and Plants of Transylvania’. Following that, on December 1st, we are having a social coffee and cake Wreath Making morning. We are very pleased to announce that our Celebrity Speaker, on February 16th, will be James Alexander Sinclair with his talk, ‘Dancing through Borders – the stories and plants behind some of James favourite gardens’. Tickets will be £10 to members, and non- members £15. These prices include a £2.50 donation to a charity of James’ choice. Tickets are on sale now, and further details can be found on the website. Down to Earth ...with Dave After a topsy turvy year we are at last getting a proper autumn with some sun, some rain, colder nights and falling leaves. The colour in the trees as you drive around our lovely lanes is quite spectacular. On the allotment this year's rent has been paid, so I will try and get value for money for another year, not that difficult if you take into account the various crops produced and the exercise needed to produce them. As you get older you are constantly told to exercise more and eat a healthier diet. My advice is get an allotment , problem solved. At this time of year it becomes a little easier as it is mainly harvesting long standing crops and clearing away the remains of the beans, courgettes, squashes etc., all of which go on the compost. With the regular rain watering is no longer needed, that is one job I don't miss. Even the weeds that seem to grow as soon as you turn your back are easily removed with a sharp hoe. The recently planted garlic has shot up as if they are in a hurry but they will be there for months yet. A tip if you have mature cabbage plants, when harvesting don't pull up the whole plant, just cut off the head then make a cross cut in the top of the stalk. This will in time give four baby cabbages to use as spring greens, it will pay to earth up the stalk for some support. For many years I have grown lots of different fuchsias, including several mature standards. This year for the first time some of them have been infested by fuchsia gall mite. This is a relatively new and serious pest that was first found in South America in 1972. By the 1980's it had spread to California, then by 2002 it had spread to France. By 2017 it had reached southern England. Fuchsia gall mite is spread by infected plant material including cuttings, but the tiny mites can also move short distances on wind currents or on other flying insects, in our area it can survive winters outdoors. It shows itself by producing small cauliflower like growths at the ends of stems. There are no pesticides available for home use, the only treatment is to cut back hard all affected growth, but some mites will no doubt survive and more cutting back will be needed. It is advised that any infected material be burned and not composted. It is very sad when a plant that you have had for several years is potentially ruined by some almost invisible little pest. To finish on a happier note the Wyevale garden centre on the outskirts of Sudbury has been bought by the Perrywood garden centre, a large upmarket family business run from Tiptree. We have long needed a good garden centre locally and look forward to spending time there in the months ahead. That's all for now, Dave

Chelsworth Christmas Fair On Saturday 1st December Chelsworth will once again be holding a Christmas Fair in All Saint’s Church. The beautiful medieval church will be full of Christmas atmosphere, with stalls selling gifts, crafts and foodstuffs. There will also be second-hand books, bric-a-brac and a bottle tombola. Two long-awaited road improvements for villages around Hadleigh have finally got the go-ahead In Nedging with Naughton, and the next door village of Great Bricett, residents have long wanted a speed limit extension on the Ipswich Road from where the current 30mph limit ends to beyond a newly installed bus shelter at the junction with Wallow Lane. This summer Green county councillor Robert Lindsay and the late Conservative county councillor Anne Whybrow both pushed the Highways to introduce a 30mph limit and ensure it ran beyond a blind corner. However, the council did not accept this but did agree to a 40mph limit. After consultation this has now been approved and works are expected to begin in the new year. Cllr Lindsay said: “Residents along this stretch have had to put up with frighteningly fast traffic on blind bends for some time. I know this is not ideal but I believe it is better to have a 40mph limit than a 60mph.” In Lavenham, villagers have been waiting for five years for a planned weight restriction trial on Water Street. The 18 month trial will include the installation of bollards and restricting HGVs from going down the hill from the High Street, but allowing them to climb the hill from the Brent Eleigh end. After months of delays and false start dates and much pushing by Green County councillor Robert Lindsay, Suffolk County Council highways have finally booked dates, January 6th to 11th, for the installation of the bollards and the one-way restriction. Councillor Lindsay said: “The trial weight restriction couldn’t come sooner for residents who have frequently had property damaged by articulated lorries and for anyone trying to walk safely along this medieval steet.”

Nearly a quarter of a million people will develop dementia in the UK this year – and that will increase to more than a million by 2025. It’s against that backdrop that Gotelee Solicitors has further boosted it’s services to those who suffer from the condition by working with the Alzheimer's Society on its Dementia Friends Champions initiative. Two of our Lawyers - Nicola Weldon and Rachel Dawson - have completed the Dementia Friends Champion training, which provides an invaluable insight into the illness and how it affects people, and the practical actions that Dementia Friends can take that could help someone with dementia living in their community. Nicola and Rachel also learnt how to run Dementia Friends Information Sessions to inspire other people to join the initiative and help to create dementia friendly communities. Nicola, who is an expert in trusts, Wills and probate and lpa, said: “The training has helped to develop Nicola Weldon our knowledge about dementia. As a firm, we are committed to supporting and helping those living with the condition, and their families, so this insight will make a real difference to so many of our clients.” The Dementia Friends Champion initiative aims to train volunteers who can then encourage others to learn about the disease and raise awareness and understanding. Rachel, who specialises in Probate, Wills and Lasting Power of Attorney, added: “I pride myself on providing clear advice and building good rapport with my clients, especially at what can be a very difficult time in their life, and this training will further enhance that relationship.” Dementia describes different brain disorders that trigger a loss of brain function. These conditions are all usually progressive and eventually severe. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia, affecting 62 per cent of those diagnosed. Symptoms of dementia include memory loss, Rachel Dawson confusion and problems with speech and understanding. East Anglian writer, Katharine Eccles Horn will be joining us to talk about her new book, ‘Dragons on Ice,’ a sequel to ‘Dogs Can’t Fly’. In her new tale, eleven-year-old Danny receives a new mischievous pet and together the two head off on an adventure which leads them to another world, one which is ruled by warring dragons. We have recently finished the Summer Reading Challenge and it was a pleasure for us to hear so many enthusiastic young readers come in and talk to us about the books that they had chosen. Our visit from Katharine, is a wonderful opportunity to learn about how an inspired idea can become a fullyfledged book. French’s Care Haven and Care Farm It has been several months since our last news up-date, so I would like to let all know that we are still continuing to help our rescued animals and those people with mental health problems that live in and around Hadleigh. On 1st December we have a Christmas Barn Dance at the Ansell Centre. The Hosepipe Band will be playing. There will be a licensed bar, barn yard snacks and a raffle. Doors open at 7.pm. Hadleigh has been brilliantly decorated with displays of poppies, and we have joined in by creating our own special poppy display. Pupils have been learning about World War 1, and have been very interested in what life was like 100 years ago. Oak class left school yesterday marching out and singing ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’ with gusto! On Thursday 8th November Primary schools across the country are laying wreaths to commemorate the fallen of the First World War, and ours will be laid by pupils on a war grave at Great Bricett at 11 o’clock. We always have lots of exciting activities to look forward to, and as always, if you would like to visit us and have a look round our lovely school you are very welcome. We have had a really exciting start back to term this year. There have been lots of things to celebrate as well as interesting activities happening in school. We celebrated alongside many other church schools at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, where four children from Whatfield proudly processed with the lovely school banner. This was a special service led by the diocese, and was a lovely chance for the children to attend a cathedral service. They were the youngest children from the smallest school at the service and were a credit to Whatfield CEVC Primary School. We have been celebrating another set of excellent SAT’s results which put us in the top 5% of schools for reading and for maths, and the top 25% for writing nationally. With small cohorts our results are not always published, but we are really proud of this result, and of the fact that we were above the expected national standard for all four assessments. Well done year to last year’s year 6! This year’s Junior Road Safety officers invited our local representatives from ‘Guide dogs from the blind’ to school, to explain how guide dogs help partially sighted and blind people travel along the busy streets. The children all thoroughly enjoyed the chance to work with Opal, who was beautifully trained and very well behaved, as she demonstrated her skills. We have also celebrated another Gold ‘School Games’ mark. This standard is very hard to achieve, and which is only awarded if there is a high level of participation in PE and Sport.

Hadleigh & District Invitation Summer League Darts Finals and Presentation Night The Hadleigh summer league darts finals were held at the Royal British Legion on Monday 1st October 2018. A decent crowd of between 70 and 80 people attended these finals and they were treated to some terrific darts,which included maximum 180's and some top class finishing. 12 teams contested the Knock Out cup (KO), along with 12 pairs and 12 singles from their respective pub/club. The Cockney Rebels produced a clinical display in the final beating the George 3-0 to win the KO Cup. Simon Farthing (Bimby) partnered Ainsley Moult to victory in the pairs final with a 2-1 win over Stuart King and Glenn Bentley. The singles title went to the George's Colin Hynard who beat Cockney Rebels star Tom King 2-1 in a classy final. Hadrian found alive and well I am very pleased to say we have found Hadrian our cat! It’s thanks to the Community news, as he was 10 miles away and I do believe without placing our ad he wouldn't have been found! Hadrian went missing August 18th 2016. Apparently he had been 10 miles away making his way around village roof tops finding food and getting comfort in different homes before settling down for a while. A BIG THANKYOU to everyone in Hadleigh who has been looking out for MR H. over the past few weeks, for putting up with me shaking biscuits and shouting loudly for Hadrian over and over again down streets and many leaflets through peoples doors! Suffolk Rockets Netball Club October has been another busy and popular month at Suffolk Rockets NC, again we have welcomed new junior and adult members to our training sessions, its amazing to see so many girls and ladies wanting to start playing Netball. Our Adult teams are doing amazing in the Colchester league and are improving every match. On the 10th October it was the 10 year 'back to netball' Anniversary, we celebrated at Training with the Suffolk Netball Development Officer Chloe Anderson, Chloe brought cake and goody bags and everyone had a wonderful time! if you are interested in trying Netball please pop along on a Wednesday evening 8-9.30pm Hadleigh High Leisure centre, no need to book, all new players welcome! A huge thank you to Barbara and everyone at The Thrift Shop in Hadleigh for their very generous donation of ÂŁ200 towards our Junior Club, we have expanded hugely this season and have over 50 young people between ages 9-15years, this money will go towards more kit for our team players as well as match balls and first aid kits. The Thrift Shop supports many local groups so please continue to support them by popping into the shop in the centre of Hadleigh. Lola, Tilly, Molly and Eloise visited Barbara to collect the cheque and they chatted all things Netball! On the 14th October some of our Adult players played in a charity netball tournament in Ipswich to raise money for Cancer Research, they had a great day and even got the make up out to dress up as Netball Zombies! the day was a great success with the tournament raising over ÂŁ500. During the season we regularly enter fun tournaments like this and we ask everyone who attends training is they would like to play. At the end of September a Junior team was entered into the Suffolk u14 Tournament at St Josephs school, they had a fantastic morning and finished 5th from 7 teams with 2 wins and losing 4. Congratulations to Abigail Condon and Emily Lawrence on their selections at trial to join the Suffolk Development Netball Academies, we are extremely proud of you! These girls will join our other 9 players in the England Netball Academies. Our Teenies session continues to be a fantastic success, we run a training session on Wednesdays 6pm - 7pm for school years 5 and 6, this is our first season coaching these age groups and so far we have 12 girls who come regularly to train, if your daughter is years 5 or 6 and would like to start playing Netball please email Hayley on the address below. This is a great chance for our swimmers to pit themselves against their usual training partners and always makes for some very exciting races! Club Champs is also the chance for our novice swimmers to experience a competitive environment or to try some new events in the supportive surroundings of their own club. Undefeated Rams Top the Table Hadleigh Rugby’s great season on and off the pitch has continued through October. A well drilled, miserly defence has seen this youthful side concede just 18 points in five matches. Ruthless finishing at the other end resulted in 198 points being scored. The most notable victory thus far was a hard fought 37-5 away victory over a strong Colchester team. The key to Hadleigh’s success seems to be the enthusiasm and willingness to work hard in training. Head Coach Adam Miles believes that the commitment during the week is starting to bear fruit on Match Days. He is confident that the Club will continue to progress and make a serious push for promotion in the New Year. New or returning players and social members are always welcome.
