Capturing the spirit of an artistic Eden Benton End House in Hadleigh was for many years the home of Sir Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines. As the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing, it influenced the careers of many artists including the young Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon and Maggi Hambling, all of whom were students there. Lett-Haines died in 1978 and Morris in 1982; both are buried in Hadleigh. There is growing appreciation of their art and of the historical significance of the School. Morris was well-known in the town and a generous teacher of artists young and old. Not only an important influence on mid-20th Century British painting, he was also a gifted plantsman and an expert on the cultivation of irises. He developed more than eighty new cultivars, now much prized by horticulturalists and whose variety and beauty inspired many wonderful paintings. Benton End House has been purchased on behalf of a new charitable trust and will be recreated as an artistic and horticultural hub, inspired by Morris and Lett-Haines’ ethos of ‘encouraging freedom of invention, enthusiasm and enjoyment’. The Benton End House Trust will support, educate and encourage artists and gardeners of all levels of experience, with particular emphasis on the inspiration of young people from Suffolk. Beginning in 2020, the Trust will offer day and residential courses, both as implementation of the vision and as part of the fundraising required to assure Benton End House’s long-term future. Cllr. Dr. Sian Dawson, sian.dawson@babergh.gov.uk, who was the charity’s first contact-point in Hadleigh, said: ”This is an exciting opportunity for Hadleigh which I have closely followed from its inception - it will certainly benefit the town and has my enthusiastic support. The Porch Project welcome The High Sheriff of Suffolk On Friday February 8th the Porch Project welcomed The High Sheriff of Suffolk, George Vestey to a drop-in session at St Mary’s Church Hadleigh. George spent time chatting to our youth workers Kayleigh and Zach about the work they are doing with the young people in Hadleigh, Gt Cornard and surrounding areas. He was very keen to hear about the one to one mentoring they provide along with other specific programmes run from our offices in Hadleigh High Street. We also work with local schools and other youth organisations. George also spoke at length with the young people who told him how important the Project is to them as the drop-ins provide a safe place to meet, play games and ‘hang out’ with friends. Also, very important to teenagers, they have a ‘listening ear’ in Kayleigh and Zach. The Project is very grateful to have had support from the High Sheriff’s Fund which is administered by Suffolk Community Foundation. The Porch Project is a registered charity 1143203. Well the new tennis season is almost here and Hadleigh Tennis Club is ready to entertain you. During the winter our Mixed, Ladies’ and Men’s teams have completed in the local leagues with some notable success for the Men’s team who are currently top of Division 4 of the Floodlit League. This year the Club will have been in existence for at least 138 years making it one of the oldest Lawn Tennis Clubs in the world. That said we are a friendly informal club welcoming players of all abilities. If it’s a while since you last played why not play a few sessions to see how you get on before deciding whether or not to join. We can put you in touch with local coaches if required. If you have young children who want to start playing Mary Claire Tweedy runs group coaching sessions for Reception to High School ages at the courts in the summer months. We play all year round on 3 floodlit all weather courts located on Layham Road next to the rugby club with Club Play sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (the latter during British Summer Time) from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sunday mornings from 10.00am to 12.00 pm. Update on 2 Lady Street, Lavenham The Hosted Outreach Post Office has been opened in 2 Lady Street for six weeks and is now becoming well established in it’s new home in our village. It has been much appreciated by many to be able to queue inside a building in the cold weather. The community and visitor information aspect of our project is also coming together well. We are compiling information on local clubs, associations and events to give as wide coverage as possible. We also have details on local community support groups and can put villagers in touch with help if needed. We are looking forward to meeting all the visitors to Suffolk during the coming summer. We are grateful for help and encouragement given to us by many kind supporters. A local artist, Charmaine McKissock has very generously gifted to us a logo she designed for our stationery. Betty Carpenter was born on 19 January 1919, and held the birthday celebrations in her residential care home on 25 January. To celebrate the milestone birthday, which coincided with Tesco’s 100th birthday, the supermarket surprised Betty by holding a small tea party in the nursing home she resides. Betty, along with her family and friends, enjoyed a bespoke birthday cake and a luxury hamper, which was hand delivered by a team member from her local Tesco store.The team member, Betty’s daughter and fellow care home residents enjoyed the birthday cake over a cup of tea, where Betty showed guests her telegram from the Queen. Sarah Parmar, Tesco’s Head of Centenary Campaigns, said: “We were truly honoured to have been able to celebrate Betty’s milestone birthday with her, and we wish Betty and her family every happiness in the future!�
Stour Valley Men’s Probus Club Recent Meetings We held our New Year Lunch at the popular Haywain, Little Bromley, on 6th February when our spouses and Probus Widows joined us for what was an enjoyable event and a tasty meal. On 20 February Brian Wilcox introduced us to “New Ways Of Working�. Which whilst all members present were retired still found this most interesting. Future Meetings Brian Wills will present what will be a lecture of particular local interest on Wednesday 6 March when he speaks about “Constable and his Paintings�. Our Annual General Meeting will take place on Wednesday 20 March. On 3 April Chris Parfitt will introduce us to the "Bhutan, Land of The Thunder Dragon" and David Ablewhite will return again and this time present "The Horrible Hanoverians". Meeting Venue We meet at the convenient St John Ambulance HQ, Manningtree CO11 1EB New members are welcomed Our Club endeavours to be simple in structure, be free of the constraints and obligations of service clubs, and involve members to a minimal cost. New Members are always very welcome to join us at a future meeting of the Stour Valley Men’s Probus Club just join us at 10am on a meeting date. The club is directed primarily to providing fellowship between members who are compatible with each other, and provide the opportunity for development of acquaintances. News from Whatfield CEVCP School With a wonderful start to 2019, Whatfield pupils have enjoyed the Spring term so far. We ensure our curriculum is exciting and innovative, as the only school locally to teach the ‘International Primary Curriculum’ which we adapt as necessary to cover the ‘National Curriculum’. Classes have been studying the topic of ‘Islands’, but have also had time for some regular seasonal events. Last week’s birdwatch was a great success with children enjoying their time feeding and then spotting the birds around our beautiful grounds. Several pupils made their own feeders and with generous donations of bird-food the birds won’t go hungry for a while. Whatfield has always been a very small school throughout our history we have averaged somewhere around 30-35 on roll, but we are currently educating 53 pupils, and this popularity, together with our partnership with Bildeston Primary School, gives us great confidence for the future. We maintain three classes, and have a fully inclusive school with pupils and staff who love the ethos and atmosphere of our friendly and welcoming school. As a ‘gold’ sports-mark accredited school, we regularly attend, and sometimes win, local and regional sporting events at Hadleigh and Westbourne partnership tournaments. This means we are often asking for parental support to accompany the pupils and all enjoy the opportunity to see their children participate. However, we are excited to announce that as a partnership of Bildeston and Whatfield CEVCP Schools we have purchased a minibus, which we hope will make transporting pupils to and from sporting events easier. It will also help us with our regular outings to forest schools as well as other curriculum activities. Whatfield CEVCP School are once again celebrating excellent results in the 2018 schools performance tables. Results show that pupils, from whatever their starting point, make excellent progress due to the fantastic teaching and learning evident at the school. This doesn’t always show in published data, as the numbers involved are small and therefore often suppressed, but we were found to be fourth in the county for the progress of our pupils across English and Maths this year, which confirms the schools continuing success. Sporting success continued this term, with the success of our dodgeball team, and also opportunity for three excellent gymnasts to enter an elite gym competition in Harlow this month. The pupils worked hard to develop an interesting and challenging routine, and were pleased to come sixth overall. Our students love the opportunity to challenge themselves against their personal bests, as well as against the other teams. We’ve had a splendid start to 2019 with 34 walkers in January and 20 in February. For our March walk on Saturday 9th we are once again trying a route outside our immediate area and probably unfamiliar to most Hadleigh walkers. As weather can be a bit unpredictable at this time of the year our route is a little shorter than normal at 6 miles. We will meet at 0930 at The Lamarsh Lion a recently refurbished community pub on the Bures to Ballingdon road (CO8 5EP). Our route will then be Edgar’s Farm, across the railway line and then follow the river Stour into Bures. From there we walk to Ferrier’s Farm, Cook Green, Clees Hall, Parkhill Wood, Alphamstone, Moat Farm and back to Lamarsh. The walk is a very pleasant one covering a wide variation of terrains – rivers, woods, rolling hills, open field etc. In addition, the Lion is noted for its real ales, good food and friendly atmosphere – what’s not to like?. If anyone is in need of transport please let us know and we will see if there is any opportunity for car sharing. For those coming from Hadleigh we suggest following the A1071 then left onto the A134 and take the back road through Assington to Bures. Go over the bridge then immediately right onto the Lamarsh Road. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy or rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. I wanted to open up conversations this month about our mental wellbeing and how exercise can help toward ensuring a positive outlook, both about ourselves and the world around us. Our minds and bodies are closely linked, and what we do with our bodies can have a profound effect on our mental wellbeing. To enable everyone to feel the advantages of physical activity, it needs to be accessible. We can start by changing how we feel about exercise, shifting our mind-set so that we see it as something we want to do because we value its positive benefits to our wellbeing, as opposed to something that we feel we should do. NHS guidelines suggest that all adults over the age of 19 should partake in at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week to ensure the benefits from it. If you do not want to attend a gym or do not have the time for group activities, think about your activities of daily living to help reach your 150 minute goal. For example, activities such as hoovering, climbing the stairs, mowing the lawn or carrying the shopping all count. If you record your activity minutes and watch them clock up, your motivation to do more could grow, and you could notice over the course of time, that you are doing more and more. From this, you may feel an increase in your mental alertness, energy, positive mood, confidence and self-esteem. Doing more could lower stress levels and also help as a preventative measure, or alternative /combination treatment for anxiety and depression. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk One of the most important powers we enjoy as Members of Parliament is the ability to initiate our very own ‘private’ legislation. ‘Private Members’ Bills’ (PMBs), as such proposals for new laws are called, abound in quantity – but with very few ever reaching the statute book, as most laws are Government Bills. My only ever PMB to date, on compensation for victims of terrorism, was objected to at the first hurdle and did not proceed (a common fate for such Bills, no matter how worthy the cause). In this context, I was delighted to attend the Commons on Friday 8th February (PMBs are nearly always debated on a Friday) when we passed Finn’s Law, a PMB providing greater legal protection for service animals, and inspired by an attack on a Police Dog called Finn. Under current legislation, if a police dog is injured by a criminal trying to evade capture, the criminal can only be charged with criminal damage. During the debate I outlined the case of Police Dog (PD) Aman and his handler PC Steve Jay of Suffolk Constabulary. In 2011, the pair were called out to assist with an incident in Ipswich with an armed individual who had stabbed a member of the public. When the team arrived on site, the individual was attempting to break into a nearby house. PD Aman, under the control of this handler, attempted to restrain the individual, and both he and PC Jay were stabbed in the altercation. For his bravery PD Aman received the Police Dog Action and Humanitarian Action of the Year at Crufts in March 2012. The Bill ensures that criminals who injure police dogs or police horses can be prosecuted under animal cruelty provisions offering the prospect of stiffer sentences. This PMB comes alongside other Government measures to boost animal welfare, such as banning the sale of ivory products in the UK and stamping out third party sales of puppies and kittens. The second of these bans will help to crack down on puppy farms and make it much harder for ‘high volume low welfare’ breeders to operate.
Hadleigh Choral Society Spring Concert Hadleigh Choral Society’s Spring Concert is a performance of the St John Passion by J. S. Bach. The text of this great choral work is the account of Christ’s crucifixion, as written in the gospel according to St John. Traditionally this was read out in churches on Good Friday. The detail of the story is told in the work by the soloists, The Evangelist, Christ, Pilate and others, whilst the choir is the crowd of angry officials and onlookers baying for Jesus’s blood. There are plenty of dramatic and fiery choruses from the choir, reflective arias from the soloists, and wonderful melodic accompaniment from the orchestra. St John Passion is famous for it’s majestic chorales. These are simple melodies similar to hymn tunes which are magnificently harmonised for the choir, and comment on the unfolding story. Members of the Society are rehearsing hard for the occasion, the music is challenging and there are lots of notes to be learnt! An extra challenge is that we are singing the work in the original German, which is quite foreign to most of us. However, with tutoring from native German-speakers in the choir, and expert training from our Music Director, Chris Phelps, we hope to give an inspiring performance come concert day! The concert takes place in St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh on Saturday 6th April at 7.30pm. I am pleased to say that, together with donations, sales of BHQ Issue 28 raised £128 for the British Legion Poppy Appeal. It was a full colour magazine that remembered the men of Bildeston and Wattisham who lost their lives in the Great War. There are just a few copies remaining and if sold, I will pass on those funds too. In the present issue, ‘Lest we forget’ records Features in this issue: the events in Market Place on Sunday 11 November 2018 when many people attended the Remembrance Service. It was pleasing to see that traffic was unofficially stopped on the main road while eleven o’clock was being struck by the bell in the Clock Tower. Have you wondered about the people behind the names listed on the two honours boards displayed in Bildeston Health centre? ‘Medical Men of Bildeston from the 16th to the 18th centuries’ looks at the first ten doctors, some of whom o not only treated their patients but also ran apothecary shops, where they prepared medicines. When Thomas Hill died in 1704, his closet contained drugs, physic mortars, weights and scales, an old still and a book about the medical powers of herbs. With no intention of serving pints, one doctor owned the Crown Inn, while Bildeston Health Centre now stands in gardens once owned by another two. Issue 10, the brass memorial dated 1600 in Bildeston church was featured. Now the story of the youngest person depicted is told in ‘Dame Mary Lumley formerly Symonds nee Wade’. Although her life came full circle back to Suffolk, at one time, she was married to the most important person in the city of London. Her childhood home at Bildeston and property she owned here and passed on to one of her daughters is identified including a large house in High Street and the site of the former Brook Farm Garage on the Chelsworth Road corner. Since BHQ began in 2011, the cover price has been maintained but now, it is £4. With mobility problems I do not get out very often and so I can focus all my time on this very absorbing hobby, which does not make any profit but just about covers costs of printing and sales in local shops. I hope that you feel that the BHQ is worth the extra with lots more interesting tales to come. However, do you have a subject in Bildeston’s past that you would like investigated? Do let me know. Oncology Physiotherapy @ Hadleigh Physio We are very excited to introduce Jacqui Thorogood who specialises in treating Cancer patients. Jacqui is passionate about improving the survivorship care that is offered to patients who have been through cancer treatment, with specific focus on informing patients on the benefits of physical activity at every stage of treatment. Through her 11 years’ experience as an outpatient physio she can treat for all general aches and pains, as well as those specifically relating to cancer treatment such as restricted shoulder function and pain following breast surgery. There is an abundance of evidence surrounding not only the general health benefits of exercise in patients who are going through chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment, but also that it can in fact reduce rates of recurrence in certain cancer types. This doesn’t have to be a gym class or something that makes you want to run for the hills! It’s all about finding something that you enjoy such as walking the dog or cycling to the shop, and then pacing it depending on your stage of treatment. Jacqui has trained in the Pink Ribbon method for Pilates following breast cancer treatment, the Willem Fourie myofascial release course for scar management and movement restrictions following breast cancer treatment and has completed three core modules in a masters entitled Clinical Leadership in Oncology and Palliative Care, amongst other short courses at Guys and St Thomas’ and The Royal Marsden. Through this time, she also taught a voluntary Pilates class through a local cancer charity and found that the group element of an exercise class offered significant psychological support to people who were all going through, or had been through, similar experiences. Practice lists of NHS patients with their correct, up-to-date address and contact details are essential for making sure patients can be contacted about their healthcare. Surgeries need to be able to contact their patients to provide them with test results, invite them for screening to protect against cancer for example, or to be vaccinated against infectious diseases such as flu or measles. Hospitals also rely on GP lists to ensure they can write to patients with appointments and results of tests or other information. Naturally, people change address or move to a different area. This can result in the database being inaccurate and means important information may not reach patients. Debra Elliott, Director of Commissioning at NHS England, South, said: “It’s really important that GP practices can maintain accurate lists of the patients they serve, and for this reason we call on everyone to let us know their contact details are correct. You will be supporting your practice to provide the best possible service to all its patients and ensuring the NHS uses its resources efficiently.”

Compensation for hearing loss caused by dangerous work equipment Our personal injury team recently succeeded in recovering ÂŁ25,000 in compensation for a client who had suffered hearing loss as a result of an accident at work. The claimant worked as a general caretaker and had various roles, for which he was provided with numerous different machines and vehicles. One of these was an excavator which was around 20 years old. One day, after briefly using the excavator, the claimant had walked alongside the machine when one of the hydraulic pipes suddenly burst and covered him with oil down one side. As a result, his right ear became filled with oil Stevan Stratton and he soon noticed that he was deaf in that ear. Whilst his hearing improved over the following weeks, it never fully recovered. The claimant's employer denied any wrongdoing. They maintained that they had regularly serviced the vehicle and that the pipe only burst because the claimant had caused the pipe to burst by leaving the excavator bucket elevated. They refused to acknowledge that the machine should have been subjected to statutory thorough inspections or that the numerous photographs showing multiple other frayed pipes on the excavator provided evidence of its poor condition. Furthermore, the claimant had left the bucket in a safe position, with the sharp teeth dug into the ground for safety reasons. Whilst that would leave tension in the hydraulic pipes, that was standard safety practice and should not have caused any problems in a healthy machine. The company also tried to allege that the claimant was responsible for the maintenance of the excavator despite him having no mechanical experience and no relevant training. Other photographs also showed the poor condition of many of the company's other machines and vehicles that the claimant had been provided with to use at work. The company and their liability insurer refused to accept liability and so, once expert evidence had been obtained confirming that the claimant had suffered permanent exacerbated hearing loss as a result of the exposure to oil caused by this accident, court proceedings were issued. Shortly after service of proceedings and once the company's insurer had instructed solicitors, an opening offer of settlement was made by them and, following further negotiations, we achieved an increase of nearly 70% on that offer, resulting in the claimant receiving compensation of ÂŁ25,000. The defendant and their insurer fought this case for 3 years. This is yet another case which goes to show that defendants and their insurance companies will invariably be reluctant to accept liability and pay compensation in anything other than obvious cases of negligence. We often find that our clients' claims are not taken seriously until court proceedings are issued, which is when defendant insurers will usually first look to take legal advice from their own solicitors. It is always important to take early and free legal advice from a local personal injury lawyer if you suffer injury following a workplace accident as defendants and their insurers will often do everything they can to avoid paying fair compensation, even when the evidence is stacked against them. Monday 11th February 2019: Cambridge University Botanic Garden It may only have been the second week of February but signs of spring were all around us when we visited Cambridge Botanic Garden last month. A wide variety of snowdrops were on show over all of the 40 acre garden and there were even a few very early daffodils to be seen, alongside hellebores, aconites, catkins, grasses and even, in the sunny spots, two bees busy on the winter flowering heather. The scent of winter box (sarcococca) greeted us at the entrance to the gardens, but the star of the show was, of course, the winter garden. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the winter garden, it was planted to maximise the angle of the winter sun, with evergreen hedging to form a sheltered microclimate for the plants and it certainly succeeds. At this time of year full of colour, flower and scent from wintersweet (chimonanthus praecox), winter honeysuckle (lonicera x purpusii) and witchhazel (hamamelis) and so much more. The coloured bark of the cherries and birch, as well as the stems of cornus really glowed in the winter sunshine. But best of all tucked away in the corner a flowering apricot covered in delicate creamy white fowers each one with a soft pink centre. This is definitely a garden for all seasons. Monday March 11th 2019: Garden Club Agm This month's meeting sees us back in Hadleigh Town Hall for our AGM. The meeting starts at 7.30pm, gardeners are practical people so we like to keep things short and to the point and the same goes for our AGM, this also leaves more time for tea and biscuits afterwards! So if you are thinking of becoming a member or just want to find out more about us please come along, we look forward to seeing you. East Anglian Garden Group At our meeting on the 2nd February we all enjoyed a fabulous talk from Gail Harland on Snowdrops, their place in art and culture, planting and growing. We saw slides featuring snowdrops, ranging from the Besler Herbal in 1613 at the British Library, and early paintings to present day; snowdrops on Royal Copenhagen’s Flora Danica, Spirit of the Flowers, also in textiles through the ages, and how the drug Galanthamine is being used as a treatment for Alzheimers. She gave us a comprehensive list of wonderful gardens to visit, her personal Mecca being Colesbourne Park in Gloucestershire, although the more accessible recommendations included Beth Chatto’s garden, and Blakenham Woodland Garden. She gave us her favourite varieties, and advised us on propagation, companion plants, pests and diseases, an all encompassing and fascinating insight into the world of the galanthaphile! We are looking forward to the arrival of our Celebrity Speaker, James Alexander-Sinclair, garden and landscape designer, writer, television presenter and RHS Council Member on the 16th February. More of that next month, as his arrival will just miss the copy deadline for this edition. I will also be able to report on the visit from Stephen Barstow, with his talk on vegetables, Around the World in 80 Plants. Our next outing will be on Wednesday May 15 to the Fairhaven Water Gardens, and East Ruston Old Vicarage, which I am sure will be a memorable day out, hopefully the weather should be kind to us at that time of the year. Down to Earth ...with Dave We seem to be getting much drier summers these days and keeping the small area of grass in our back garden looking good is becoming more difficult. So with some reluctance we have decided to dig up the untidy and very mossy area we call a lawn and replace it with gravel. This will give us a chance to display many of the numerous pots we have acquired over the years in groups on the new gravel. The old turf will not go to waste but will be taken to the allotment, stacked in a heap, grass side down and will soon rot down into some lovely loam to be used as top dressing, we could just get rid of the old grass in a skip but this would be such a waste. When I was starting this project I found a very old turfing spade in the shed, this is a long, metal handled tool with a cranked handle and a blade shaped like the ace of spades on the end. It is a bit of a museum piece but it is the ideal tool for cutting up turf, much better than an ordinary spade. A sure sign that spring is on the way is that the first bunch of daffodil buds have been brought home from the allotment, in no time they fully open to give a lovely splash of colour. If there is room some seed sowing can continue in the greenhouse with early peas, leeks, celeriac, cucumbers and spring onions, all sown in plastic covered trays with some bottom heat. The National Open Gardens Scheme has begun and a visit to an NGS garden is a great way to spend an afternoon, most make a small charge which goes to nursing and caring charities. The NGS has donated £55 million to charity since 1927 and, in 2018 donated £3.1 million. One of the first to open on March 17th and on various other days during the year is 'Woodwards' at Coddenham just outside Ipswich, this is a 1.5 acre gently sloping garden overlooking rolling Suffolk countryside. One of the Hadleigh and District Garden Club members, Sue Mordey, is opening her garden in Semer on Sunday 23rd June as part of the scheme. Of similar interest are the Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh, open on the 8th of June, but not part of the NGS with proceeds going to The Friends of St Mary's church. The Garden Club recently organised a coach trip to the Cambridge University Botanical Gardens, a first time visit for us. This is a very large, tranquil and interesting place, suprisingly set in the heart of Cambridge. On returning home it was sad to find what little remained of a starling on the lawn, it would seem that a sparrow hawk had enjoyed a tasty meal while we had been away. Despite the occasional loss like this we will continue to encourage the birds and we have a pair of bluetits showing an interest in one of our nest boxes. That's all for this time, Dave

Hadleigh Freemasons remember Robert Burns On January 25th Hadleigh Freemasons together with their ladies and personal guests attended the Brett Valley Lodge Burns Supper held at The Town Hall. This now Annual Event proved as popular as ever with 112 present, all enjoying a sumptuous five course meal served with a complimentary glass of ‘finest’ Malt Whiskey. ‘The Address to The Haggis’ was carried out in the usual exuberant style, accompanied by the skirl of the bagpipes. Unfortunately their fitter or indeed the resident couldn’t be bothered to go to the council tip 3 miles away, instead it was easier for them to dump it at the roadside and desecrate the countryside. It is becoming clear that this builder has no conscience. IF YOU KNOW WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS OR OTHER INCIDENTS OF FLY TIPPING – REPORT THEM IT’S YOUR COUNTRYSIDE TOO! Everyone has a legal responsibility or 'duty of care' to make sure that all waste from their household or business is disposed of correctly and doesn't end up being flytipped. Some people make money by charging to take waste away illegally and then fly-tipping it. You could face penalties of up to £5,000 if you don’t check that the company or person you give waste to: If you discover fly-tipped waste, there are some do's and don'ts: Don't: • Don't touch the waste - it may contain syringes, toxic chemicals or other hazardous substances. • Don't disturb the site - there may be evidence that could help identify the flytippers and lead to their prosecution. Do: • Visually try to work out what the waste consists of and how much there is take photos if it is safe to do so. • Make a note of the day, date and time you saw the tipping, its exact location and whether it’s in or near water. Keep any notes you make, even scribbled ones, as they can be very valuable as evidence. • Contact us as soon as possible so that we can investigate. If you witness someone fly-tipping, make a note of: • How many people are involved and what they look like. • What has been dumped - how much and what it looks like. • Details of any vehicles involved including make, colour and registration number if possible. • Call 999 if the incident is still in progress. Be very careful. Remember that fly-tippers are doing something illegal, they are unlikely to welcome people observing them or taking notes or photographs

Who, out of my readership, thinks they would like to run a marathon? None of my mates in the herd would do such a thing, but I gather humans can train themselves up to go the distance. We have been fortunate to get two runners in the London marathon on April 28tth this year, and training is in full swing. Both men would love to be sponsored for their efforts. Adam Bensusan has to raise the entry fee him self, and once that target is reached he can donate all the rest of the money he gets to us! Yeah, thanks mate. I hope you get lots of support. The Centre’s next fundraiser is the horse race night is on 23rd March at Nayland village hall. 7pm for 7.30pm start. Tickets are £15 each which includes a two course supper. It is a fun night with jockeys hoping to win a place in the final. You won’t be expected to ride any of the Shelley herd, by the way. We had a bit of a rocky start to the term with some freezing temperatures, but two new child riders joined us and they are doing very well. My photo shows a Thursday morning ride enjoying a bit of outdoor air and sunlight, but you can tell from the clothing that it was cold. In comparison the other photo shows the ‘tail end’ of a ride at the Dubai branch of the Riding for the Disabled Association, taken in January by one of our own volunteers. The temperature was a pleasant 24 degrees. There the rides finish at 11.00, and don’t resume until 16.00 to avoid the mid day heat. The ponies live in big loose boxes in large open-ended barns, with a team of grooms to care for them. They were still in their shaggy winter coats when this visit took place. The children (no adult riders in that branch) do not have any hands on experience in horse care as ours do, but their rides are similar to the ones we give, with plenty of educational games, movement and laughter. Her Highness Sheikha Hassa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum donated three of her ponies to the fledgling group to help it get started. Capel Ladies Club 7th February 2019 – The Role of a Parish Nurse Until our first “In” Meeting of the year I had no accurate idea of exactly what a Parish Nurse did in our community, in fact I had assumed that it was a wholly medical role which involved a first aid professional who visited patients recently discharged from hospital, or new mums or elderly people who had had falls. I also assumed that they were a part of the NHS, like an add-on to the local doctors’ surgery. In fact I was half right in some of these assumptions……. but my main misconception that they were connected to the local surgery was entirely inaccurate. In fact they are fully qualified volunteers working under the charity “Parish Nursing Ministries UK”, and in Capel they work with the support and backing of the local Methodist Church. Having said that, neither Caroline Ursell nor Margaret Sankey will ever try to “ram religion down your throats”! In their own words they support all the people of Capel St Mary regardless of their age, background or beliefs, providing “whole person health care”. Caroline herself is a registered nurse, with a MSc degree and a diploma in Child Psychology who works part-time in an Ipswich GP practice, while Margaret has a diploma in Occupational Therapy and a special interest in Care of the Elderly. Between them they can offer support for the “physical, mental, social and spiritual health” of individuals, and this can include help with understanding medical information, diseases and conditions, help and support for carers and dementia patients, post-natal well-being, mental health and increasing and maintaining safety and independence in the home. They will also offer help through prayer if the person so requests. Although they have no official connection to the local GP’s surgery they do have an informal liaison with the practice manager and the medical staff there, which can be useful when advising or referring people who have gone to the Parish Nurses initially for help. Caroline and Margaret organise regular dropin sessions such as The Hope Hub at Capel Methodist Church on the first Saturday of the month for anyone wanting to meet new friends, have a coffee and a chat, play board games, do arts and crafts and discover local support and social activities. There is also DAF’s Café (Dementia And Friends) for those living with dementia and their friends and families on the 2nd and 4th Friday mornings of each month which is held in Capel Library. Caroline’s talk at Capel Ladies was both interesting and informative, and I’m sure there are many people in the village who either benefit from the help of Parish Nurses at the present time, or who will certainly benefit from it in the future. Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Celotex The club was deeply saddened to learn that our Life Member and former club captain Giles Langton passed away on February 13th. Giles was 85. Giles joined the club in 1959 and was part of what many see as a golden age at the club. He was a cultured, hard hitting batsman and a more than useful bowler. Early in his career at Hadleigh he shared in a 7th wicket stand of 110 with Claude Claireaux, which remained a club record for over 50 years. As club captain from 1966-68 he laid the foundations of what would become arguably the club’s greatest team, which would go on to win the Suffolk League in 1974. His farming commitments meant he could not play as much as he would have liked, but he was fully involved in all the club’s activities including its many social events. He is pictured above at a summer party at Kersey in the 1960s. Giles then became a key member of the club’s ‘A’ or 2nd XI, scoring 733 runs in the 1979 season and captaining from 1977-79. He continued to play for the club well into the 1990s, dropping down to support the development of the club’s youngsters in the 3rd XI, a new venture for the club. This is where I remember him most, playing games at Layham Road and other humble Suffolk venues, which must have been quite a come-down from his days in the 1st team. But Giles loved the game so much, and played it like a gentleman. In fact he was, as our Vice-Chairman Tim Warner has said, ‘a true gent’. Our thoughts are with the Langton family. Gary Wiles
Kersey Mill Newsletter Finally, with all the decorations and staging taken down following Santa’s Workshop the Mill is looking and sounding bare and quiet. It was a hive of activity with excited children enthralling in Santa’s Workshop throughout December, but now we look forward to pushing ahead with further restoration. Phase 4 starts with the installation of the runner stones and the building of the stone furniture before we move onto the reinstatement and repair of the crown wheels and teeth below. Plans are well underway for the next major open day on April 28th 10am – 4pm. Drive it Day is when a lot of classic and vintage vehicles descend on Kersey Mill, in fact early indications would suggest that we will have more display vehicles on show that any previous year. Weather permitting it does make for a great day out with lots of display vehicles on show. Display vehicles enter free of charge so do get your pride and joy out of the garage and mark the start of the season with a trip to Kersey Mill. There is also an opportunity to view the mill and enjoy the many attractions including the recently refurbished Café and several of the new businesses involved in health and wellbeing along with the wedding venue, craft studio’s and shops. It is a wonderful opportunity for classic and vintage vehicle owners to commence the season and come to Kersey Mill where you can admire and discuss with other owners the delights of yesterday’s vehicles. All public will be welcomed, so come and enjoy a lovely day out, admire the beautiful vehicles, tour the Mill, sample some delicious refreshments on offer. Entry for display vehicles is free. Free entry for pedestrians £5 public parking. We are also welcoming students from Cambridge on an Historic England tour of the mill to witness the restoration in progress. More on this next month.

Hadleigh Hares A Flying Scott Ramsey! The winter North East Essex and South Suffolk cross country series is now finished. The penultimate event was hosted by the Hares at Holbecks on Sunday 10th February. Despite the now traditionally cold and wet conditions a field of 161 men and 80 women lined up for the seniors’ race. The testing, hilly, muddy, but slightly shorter course than last year made for particularly tough going, but once again, the Hares came up trumps winning the men’s Pool B race and coming second in the women’s event overall. Among a strong team performance, the efforts of Claire Jacobs who won the women’s race, Scott Ramsey who came third man and Danny Preece and Dan Widdowson who finished 7th and 8th respectively deserve a special mention. With just one more race to go Hadleigh Hares were one point clear at the top of Pool B above old rivals Tiptree as the last race loomed at Halstead on 17th February. Another great result at Halstead with the Hares men winning and the ladies coming second finally put us above Tiptree to take the overall season win. Congratulations to all of our cross country runners, and here’s to a successful next season in Pool A. Another Hare with something to celebrate was Paul McAllister who, by competing in Seville, has now finished no less than 25 marathons. Many congratulations to him for an epic achievement. On a more sombre note, it was with great shock and sadness that we learned of the sudden death this month of our friend, past chairman and one time head coach, Clive Pinnion. Clive was a great supporter of the Hares over many years and gave a huge amount of his time and energy into making the club what it is today. Although his involvement had reduced over recent years, he will be remembered by many as a great champion for athletics in the town, not least for his commitment to the junior section, many of whom have gone on to achieve great things. It was fitting that a minute’s silence was held in his honour at the Cross Country in his home town where many will remember him with kindness and gratitude. Clive’s funeral will be held at Seven Hills Crematorium at 10:30 on Friday 8th March. Whether you have run before or you are a complete novice, Hadleigh Hares has a session to suit you. Hadleigh Swimming Club This month, Hadleigh Swimming Club has been put to the test in the Suffolk ASA’s annual County Championships – and they did not disappoint. As you may have read in last month’s Community News, Hadleigh swimmers achieved an impressive 60 qualifying swims and were keen to show their strength and skills against of some of Suffolk’s best aquatic athletes. Plenty of the Dolphins achieved strong personal best times and a number of the team finished in the top ten. Three swimmers; Lottie, Darcy and Benny achieved places in the finals of their events and Lottie topped it all off with a Bronze medal in the 200 metres Breaststroke – we’re all so proud of her and indeed, all of our competitors. Charity presentation at Stoke On Saturday the 2nd of February, Alan Line presented a cheque to Norman Davidson of Wooden Spoon for the money raised during his 2018 Captaincy at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club. The plague will be displayed in the club as a thankyou from Wooden Spoon. A total of £ 4266.23 was accumulated & Wooden Spoon is most grateful for the generosity of members in raising these funds to help them continue their work in supporting disadvantaged children in our area. At the same time Mr Don Wiggins, the 2017 captain, was presenting his cheque to the representative form his chosen charity, Prostate Cancer UK. Don raised £4,176.20 in memory of his good friend Dick Chalmers who died of the disease whilst Don was captain. Steve Clark

Lavenham Carpet Bowls Club But by the time this is being read will be well on our way to Spring with snowdrops, followed by other bulbs popping up all around. We have already played a few 'friendly' matches with other local clubs, luckily dodging the snow and ice. Val, our fixture secretary has arranged these fixtures We celebrated all our 'in-house' competition well into the Summer. winners at our Xmas lunch These matches are friendly and social occasions usually finishing with a buffet either at home or away. We would welcome any new members to come and join us and try Carpet Bowls. We have a morning session on Tuesday mornings at 10am and an evening session on Thursday evening at 7.30pm, both are at Lavenham Village Hall. The first two sessions are free, to see if you would enjoy Carpet Bowls and tuition is available if you need it, but it is a fairly easy game to pick up. The friendly matches with other villages are usually played in the evenings so we might be playing 'away' on some Thursday evenings so please check with us if you are planning to come on a Thursday.
