Chelsworth Open Gardens Its that time of year again and the residents of Chelsworth are busy preparing for our famous Open Gardens Day on Sunday June 30th 11am until 5pm. We are only a tiny village but our Open Gardens Day punches well above its weight with over 20 gardens open - all within a short stroll from one another. Its a real community effort with almost every resident involved in one way or another. Teas and light refreshments (including lots of cake) will be available in 3 or 4 of the gardens and we also have a very welcoming pub. There will be some idyllic places to picnic - maybe alongside the river Brett; and some lovely places for a walk, including our community woodland. There will also be plant and craft stalls, and other displays and entertainments. The gardens vary from huge and formal to tiny cottage plots, including water gardens, walled gardens and butterfly meadows. There are tall stately delphiniums and hollyhocks, roses, wild flowers and vegetable plots. All set against a tranquil backdrop of ancient timbered houses. Add all this to the beauty of the village itself with its picturesque river, and ancient bridge and you have the makings of a great family day out. Parking is free and entry to the event is by programme which can be bought in the car parks. Adults £6, children free. Chelsworth is on the B1115 between Sudbury and Stowmarket. The 180th Hadleigh Show Saturday 18th May 2019 The weather was near perfect for our 180th Hadleigh Show and visitors certainly flocked to Holbecks Park to join in our celebrations. The highlight of the Show for many were The Monster Trucks who were big and noisy and thrilled the crowds with their car crushing antics. An extra bonus this year was the chance to get up close to an Apache helicopter from nearby Wattisham airbase and thanks go to 3 Regiment Army Air Corp for making this happen. With record numbers of livestock entries the rings were packed with a huge variety of breeds and this made for a wonderful spectacle in the Grand Parade in the middle of the afternoon. The Flower marquee celebrated our anniversary with classes covering all aspects of the show whilst the Food Hall, food courts and cookery demonstration area was also a must for food lovers with all different types of cuisine on offer. Numerous local trade stands were showcasing their businesses whilst the Rural Craft Marquees was, as usual, filled with a spectacle of colour and talented craftsmen. The Art Tent once again showcased art, pottery and sculptures from many local artists with visitors getting the chance to vote for their favourite painting. The new access track from Coram Street for cars and show vehicles worked well in its first year and we hope the closure of Duke Street to vehicles made for a more pleasant arrival at the show for those of you who walked in from the town. The Hadleigh Farmers’ Agricultural Association would like to thank everyone who has supported or visited the show this year and helped us celebrate our 180th Anniversary in style. We hope to see you again next year on 16th May 2020

Moving in 2019? Don’t pay twice for conveyancing When you move home, selling and buying property, you will need to employ the services of a conveyancing solicitor to deal with the legal aspects of the transaction, for which there is a legal fee. Paying twice when transactions fall-through What many home movers don’t realise is that if your transaction falls-through, which happens for many reasons and with increasing frequency, you will still be charged by your conveyancing solicitor for the legal work undertaken up to the point the transaction fell-through. This means, you pay legal fees to your conveyancing solicitor for the transaction that fell-through and then have to pay them again for the legal work on the next transaction, which will hopefully be a successful one that goes through to ‘completion’. Rightmove reports that nearly 30% of property transactions fell-through in 2018*, which is significantly more common than most people realise. Some commentators also believe the current economic uncertainty and slow property market may cause this percentage to increase as buyers and sellers become more cautious and risk-averse, making them more likely to pull-out of a deal. Whatfield Vintage Road Run On Saturday 6th July Whatfield will be holding its first Vintage Road Run. A variety of classic vintage vehicles, including cars and steam engines, will be leaving from the Village Hall (except for the larger engines, which will be leaving from local farms) at 10 am. After following either a 9 or 21 mile route, with stops at local pubs for refreshments and lunch, they will return to the Village Hall for a line-up at 5 pm. All are welcome to see them off and return. Why not make an evening of it? From 5pm the Bar will be open and The Community Council will be selling food from the BBQ, plus a tempting array of home-baked cakes. An Anecdote - Whatfield 1946 Four of us village boys’ football boots needed their studs replaced so off we went to Mr Silas Avis’ workshop on the corner of Church Lane, Whatfield. Mr Avis was the village cobbler, we knocked and entered and made our request. “Yes I can do them for you but you’d better be quiet as the boat race is about to begin�. He had a wireless set so all us boys sat on the floor and listened to Mr John Snagge with his crisp deep bass voice commentating on Oxford v Cambridge. Oxford won. Happy days. Roy Wilding

Our school is always busy, but in the summer we even more activities to fit into the educational schedule. We have lots of exciting events planned for this term, including our annual sports week and a range of educational visits to the forest, the beach and to the museum of East Anglian Daily Life. We also look forward to preparing and supporting our pupils for assessments and transition on to their different High Schools. We were very proud that one of our students won a family ticket to the Hadleigh Show for his programme cover design, and that his artwork was on display in the education tent. Our pupils worked hard to produce artwork for the education tent - one of which displays produce grown in Suffolk. Key Stage 2 children studied Andy Warhol and produced their own print blocks using bright colours for the 3D exhibit. Hopefully all the visitors enjoyed the hard work that had gone in to all stages of the show. Pupils in year 3, 4 and 5 attended the School’s food farm fair at Trinity Park on Thursday 25th April. They were able to enjoy meeting farm animals and see how local fruit and vegetables are sourced. Children in our Acorns class then continued their work by helping Mr Plumbly sow seeds at our school allotment and looking at what produce and ingredients make up a yummy roast dinner. Mr Golding also helped children plant out seedlings in our lovely EYFS area, and they were very pleased to see the growth they have made. Mrs Blackwell was pleased to borrow an apple press from the community orchard near her village, and the children in Acorn class thoroughly enjoyed some tasty apple juice from their hard work. They have also been studying earthworms and the worms in their wormery - the great compost and plant food they have made will help us with growing our plants. The ducklings were great fun, but have grown fast enough to need their new home now, and are enjoying life in their large pond. As you know we work hard at sport, and are incredibly proud to announce that in May pupils represented Whatfield School at a gymnastics competition at Whitton Sports Centre. They did amazingly well, achieving 2nd and 4th places in both the under 7s and under 9s. We have now qualified for regional finals which take place in June, good luck Whatfield CEVCP School! One of our pupils entered a national majorette competition recently and we are very pleased to announce that she was placed 3rd overall in her solo performance, and is now a national champion! She kindly brought her trophy into school to share with us all. Art of the Needle Exhibition St Mary's Church Hadleigh were delighted to host the Art of the Needle Exhibition in May organised by Jane Haylock of The Idler with contributions from textile artists from two groups the Textile Art Group Suffolk and Beyond Stitch. The exquisite work by the artists was much appreciated by the many visitors who attended. In the South Chapel Revd Canon David Atkins exhibited his collection of church vestments together with items from Shelley and Layham churches and he was on hand to pass on his expert knowledge regarding their significance as was his wife Wendy to talk about the beautiful textile art she was exhibiting. The exhibition was a huge success in raising funds to help with the restoration of the church building of St Marys. Fr Jo Delfgou, the Church Wardens and the Art Exhibition Committee at St Mary's would like to thank all participants for their hard work.
Town tickets a winner thanks to SEH BAC Ipswich football fan was celebrating after winning two tickets to Portman Road to see Ipswich Town take on Hull City – all courtesy of SEH BAC. Local resident Sarah Dooley entered a Facebook competition organised by the award-winning home improvement firm and was selected at random as the winner. Unfortunately, Sarah saw the Tractor Boys lose the Sky Bet Championship game 0-2, but nevertheless, she enjoyed her visit, having picked up the tickets with her dad Barry from SEH BAC’s Ipswich showroom. Sarah, who took Barry to the match, said: “My dad and I are Ipswich fans and we had a great time, despite the team losing, and we’d like to thank everyone at SEH BAC for the tickets. A Guide to Natural Feeding: Part 1 Dogs should be fed a biologically appropriate diet Every creature on earth must consume the diet that is biologically most appropriate to eat, otherwise it will get ill and may even die. For the first 4 million years of dogs’ existence on earth they certainly didn’t eat canned food or kibble. Four million years? Yes, that’s how long grey wolves have been around, Wolves (canis lupus), coyotes (canis latrans), and domestic dogs (canis familiaris) are closely-related species. All three can interbreed and produce viable, fertile offspring. Through DNA analysis, scientists have established that the wolf is the ancestor of the dog. When wolves were domesticated (around 8,000–20,000 years ago), humans changed their outer appearance and behaviours through breeding, but not their internal organs or digestive systems. In the wild, dogs eat prey and not much else Dogs are carnivores. True, they can and do eat vegetable matter, but anatomically they are designed to catch, kill and eat prey. As with other predatory mammals, they have powerful muscles relative to their size, fused wrist bones and a cardiovascular system that supports both sprinting and endurance. And a quick look inside their mouth is all it takes to understand why they are really much closer to being carnivores than omnivores. Dogs have five types of teeth, each designed to perform different and precise functions: fang teeth to catch and kill prey and to tear off meat; front teeth to scrape meat off bones; small incisors to grab and hold; large incisors that work like scissors to cut sinews and muscles; and molars to crush bones. None of these teeth, are capable of grinding food. Leave dogs to their own devices and they will eat small birds and beasts (rabbits, mice, squirrels) and a share of larger prey (sheep, deer, boar) If your beloved pet ran off today, he or she would not be found grazing the wheat fields, but chasing the rabbits. What’s more, they would eat the whole animal, including its bones. Canine digestion is nothing like human digestion Dogs have no digestive enzymes in their saliva (unlike humans) and very large, expandable stomachs, not to mention indescribably strong stomach acids (strong enough to burn your fingers). Their digestive system is designed so that they can tear off chunks of raw meat, crunch up raw bones and swallow the lot whole. The lack of digestive enzymes in their saliva and their inability to move their jaws from side to side (necessary to grinding food) is why they gulp everything down. Puddle Ducks - Swimming classes for your baby, toddler and pre-school child
Semer Airgun Club Semer Airgun Club is currently looking for new members. We are an informal air rifle and pistol club and meet every Tuesday from 6pm - 8pm at Semer Village Hall. Juniors from the age of nine are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult at all times. We have 5 x 10 metre target lanes and 1 x 6 metre pistol lane. During the spring and summer we also shoot outdoors at various knockdown targets and spinners to a range of around 30 metres. The younger members (and one or two oldies) also enjoy shooting at tin cans. Club rifles, pistols and pellets are available if you want to give airgun shooting a try. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk It is sometimes said that we have a ‘crisis’ in our politics. Let’s be clear, our world of Westminster is in an extraordinary frenzy over one big issue. But we should never lose sight of the true picture away from the bubble where there is much to be positive about. In particular, the latest figures on jobs would have made many Governments over the years scream with envy. We now have the lowest unemployment – just 3.8% of the population - since 1974. This now means that the official count of jobless people has not been lower in my entire lifetime. Since 1974 we have had: a devaluation crisis and seeking support from the IMF to bail out our nation’s finances; the winter of discontent; deep and dark recessions under Conservative Governments and the biggest of all under Labour in 2008; we have had John Major’s Black Wednesday and Gordon Brown’s credit crunch. In all those years unemployment has generally been one of the biggest issues facing any Government. And today, amidst what is unquestionably an existential political crisis for my party, we oversee record low joblessness. But in addition, record numbers of women in work; 1 million more disabled people in work since 2010; and youth unemployment down by half a million in the same period. Of course, the job for any Government is to avoid complacency and recognise that, whilst wages are now rising at the fastest rate since the crash, many still feel the pinch. We have also had high profile announcements that major factories are to close in South Suffolk – Delphi in Sudbury and Philips Avent in Glemsford being the most important examples. That said, in evidence to the South Suffolk Taskforce that I set up in response to these closures, the most common concern we have heard from local firms has been difficulty in recruiting. We must do everything possible, as we are doing, to attract new investment into these plants and our wider area. Nevertheless, the statistics I have quoted represent real lives on the up, and we should recognise that there is much to be proud of.

Knickers:- What an array of underwear ladies have been obliged to wear over the centuries from hefty, scratchy, draughty knickers to modern day, almost invisible, thongs. Liza Jones has a wonderful collection which she brought along to our last meeting. Her clear, well researched presentation on the History of Underwear made for a very interesting, entertaining evening. Liza also circulated her many fine examples providing a trip down memory lane for some members. Her fee will benefit East Anglian Air Ambulance. Ingatestone Hall:-Ingatestone Hall was our venue for a club visit one very cold and windy Saturday. After hundreds of years, many alterations, adjustments and additions it is still the home of the Petre family. Our tour guide, Elizabeth, gave us the background information in each impressive room with its formidable dark paintings, impressive silver collection and often threadbare chairs. The magnificent building boasts two priest holes, a crenelated tower and some unique glass windows. In view of the sudden drop in temperature the garden visit was reduced to a speedy walk to admire an elaborate pump house, a tree lined walk and some fierce looking Canada Geese standing guard over Inside Ingatestone Hall their new chicks. Although with tour guide Elizabeth this was a private visit, the house is open to the public from Easter to the end of September from noon to 5pm on Wednesday, Sunday & Bank Holiday Monday afternoons. www.ingatestonehall.com

Now that the Winter is over, golfers are looking forward to striding the fairways again in warmer conditions. It seems that many local golfers are unaware of the HGS which has been in existence for many years. The Society arrange 9 outings a year starting in early January (a Christmas meeting at Hintlesham GC) and monthly thereafter, through to October, but missing out February. The venues are mainly in Suffolk, but sometimes stray into North Essex. Currently the Society has on average of 30 playing members but meetings are usually attended by between 18 and 24 very friendly men and women who would be very welcoming. Hadleigh Choral Sings for Summer Hadleigh Choral Society is preparing a varied and light-hearted programme of music for their two Summer Concerts in aid of local good causes. We are including a mixture of light classical songs, show numbers, specially arranged pop songs, and a Swing Medley! The first concert is in aid of Success after Stroke, the Sudbury-based charity which helps survivors of strokes rebuild their lives and confidence. This concert is in Lavenham Village Hall on Saturday 8 June at 7.00 pm. Tickets are priced at £15 for adults (£7.50 for Under 14s) and include post-concert canapes and fizz! The second concert takes place the following week in the Deanery Garden in Hadleigh and is in aid of St Mary’s Church funds. The Dean of Hadleigh, Father Jo Delfgou is keen to show off the beautiful garden behind the Deanery, and a summer concert seems the perfect way to do it! The concert is at 3.00 pm on Sunday 16 June, bring your own chairs or picnic blankets, and postconcert afternoon tea is included in the ticket price. Tickets are £10 for adults (£5 for under 14s) and are available from St Mary’s Church, Choir members and The Idler bookshop in the High Street. Should the weather be bad the concert will be held in the Church. Both occasions will be fun events and a chance to hear Hadleigh Choral Society sing the lighter side of their repertoire. Bildeston Primary School We have begun a very exciting summer term. Many children in school are undergoing assessments of one sort or another. As usual we are determined to make sure stress is limited for the children involved. One thing year 6 enjoy is a SATs breakfast which is a chance for the pupils to get into school and have a sociable meal together prior to their tests. Early Years During the summer term our early year’s children will take the opportunity to make good use of our outdoor classroom and the woods at Kings Pightle. They enjoy a variety of forest schooling activities including; bug hunting and making shelters. They also learn to use lots of skills during this time and have lots of fun – they even take a picnic lunch to the woods! Our early year’s children have even had time to make bread!!! PTFA News Date for your diary: Saturday 6th July PTFA Summer Fair (12 noon – 3.00pm) We hope to see lots of our Bildeston community at our annual event. School Farm & Country Fair On Thursday 25 April, children from Years 3 and 4 went to the School Farm Fair at the Suffolk Showground in Ipswich. The day allowed the children to experience many different aspects of farming, food production and the countryside with demonstrations and interactive ‘hands on’ exhibits. It also enabled pupils to understand the relationship between the crops grown in the fields to the end products found in the shops. The cost of the coach was partially funded by Suffolk Agricultural Association and we thank them for their help and support. Enrichment Dance Workshop Two pupils from Bildeston represented the school at a Dance Workshop at Whatfield Village Hall. This took place on Wednesday 1 May. Representatives from Dance East ran this event and noted the enthusiasm our pupils have for dancing! Hollow Trees Farm Visit On Friday 3 May 2019, in order to understand where our food comes from and how we can make healthy choices, Goldcrest and Robin class visited Hollow Trees Farm in Semer. They had a fantastic day filled with a range of activities, including planting seeds. Bradfield Woods Visit Our year 5 pupils visited Bradfield Woods Nature Reserve on two separate days enjoying the facilities they have to offer. These sessions involved learning about the trees and animals of the forest as well as practical bush craft skills. Hadleigh Walkers Our walk on Saturday 8th June will start and finish in Bures and is an old favourite generally known as the Dragon Walk. This walk is about 10 miles and follows a route of Fysh Farm, St Stephen’s Chapel (to view the dragon and hopefully look inside the chapel),Old Hall Farm, Farthing Hall,Wissington Hall (possibly more dragons if the church is open), Wormingford Bridge, The Fir Trees and back to Bures via the old water mill. A little long but fairly easy and well worth the effort. We will probably have 2 rest stops on the walk so it might be worth bringing along a snack and something to drink – particularly if the day is warm. We will start at the Bures Community Centre car park at 0930 as usual. On entering Bures (on B1508) from the Sudbury/Assington direction there is a fairly sharp left hand bend and the church is straight ahead. Bear left keeping the church on your right. The road bears left then right and the car park is about 100 yards on the right hand side. If anyone is in need of transport please let us know and we will see if there is any opportunity for car sharing. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy or rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. Looking further out to July, our proposed walk will be around Polstead (always a pleasure) followed by a longish walk from Hadleigh going out to Wenham in August. More details next month. News from Kersey School Squirrels (Reception) Squirrels have been busy learning around the topic of ‘Superheroes’. We are currently planning our own superhero story based around Supertato. Everyone is enjoying dressing up in capes and masks and role playing in our Superhero Headquarters! Last week we joined with Year 1 to spend the morning with Miraiker (a puppeteer). The morning was full of fun watching puppets shows based around traditional stories and making up our own. Hedgehogs (Years 1 and 2) Hedgehogs have had a very busy term so far. Our topic this half term is Africa. All the children really enjoyed an African Art Day where they spent the morning printing and making African Rainmakers. We think they work rather too well with all the rain we've been having lately! We are looking forward to our Sports Day soon and hope the rain stays away that day. Badgers (Years 3 and 4) Badgers class had a great day on their trip to the Ipswich museum. Not only did we have fun learning about different aspects of the Stone Age with activities like clay bowl making and artefacts hunt, we also got the bus to and from Ipswich rather than a coach. The children really enjoyed handing over their money to the driver and looking after their ticket. As part of our English topic we used our experiences from the school trip to write our own newspaper reports, as well as creating posters as to why people should visit the Ipswich museum. Owls (Years 5 and 6) Owls have started the new term learning about the Shang Dynasty, the first recorded ancient Chinese civilisation. They have found out about some of their rulers and leaders and last week, they had a visit from a martial arts instructor who shared some ancient Chinese skills, including Tai Chi and Kung Fu. They learned about how these arts began and why. We have read two stories, The Magic Paintbrush and The Firework Maker's Daughter, and they have been the basis of our English learning. The Y6 children are working hard on their SATs as we speak! Home-Start in Suffolk - Volunteers Needed! Home-Start in Suffolk is a charity which supports families across the county where there is at least one child under the age of 12. Families maybe in need of support for a variety of reasons, because of post-natal depression, illness or disability, isolation, family breakdown or bereavement. We train and recruit volunteers who support families by visiting them in their homes on a weekly basis. We are seeking more volunteers to help us to meet the growing number of families in need of Home-Start support in the Bury St Edmunds Area. We offer our volunteers accredited training, ongoing support and friendship. Here is one Family’s story of how Home-Start in Suffolk helped them. “HomeStart met Mum Lauren and her family shortly after their new baby was diagnosed with brain damage. Lauren and her husband were overwhelmed with the emotional and practical demands of caring for a baby who suffers from multiple seizures and is unsettled day and night whilst juggling the needs of their other young children. Life was turned upside down for the family with hospital appointments, admissions and an unknown future. Their health visitor referred them to Home-Start Suffolk who introduced them to Ruth a trained Home-Start volunteer. Ruth visits Lauren and the children once a week providing support when Lauren’s husband works late. Having Ruth there to “share the load” enables all of the children to get one-one attention; reading, playing or doing school work. Mum or Ruth cook dinner and they can all sit down together whilst Ruth holds or sings to the baby. Lauren’s says she felt “immediately at ease” with Ruth and found it easy to talk to her when she was having a difficult week. Although the family’s situation remains the same, her visits have allowed the family time to adjust and explore what ongoing support is needed and available to them”. Lavenham Sinfonia June Concert Wow, what a night and what a superb concert that was performed by the Sinfonia on April 14th. The concert opened quite quietly with one of Haydn’s lesser known symphonies No26 ‘Lamentatione’ that proved to be a most enjoyable piece reflecting Haydn’s earlier years and first played during Easter week of 1768 or 1769. It was followed by an outstanding performance of Mozart’s ever popular Clarinet Concerto played by Matthew Scott. Scott opened the performance by explaining to the audience that he was using a “Basset Clarinet” for which the concerto was originally written. This instrument has a deeper range than a normal clarinet and is very nearly 12 inches (nearly 30 cms) longer than the standard instrument. The result was a stunning rendition of this much liked concerto. The Concert concluded with Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony first performed in December 1813, and was an instant success with 2nd movement being repeated at the demand of the Audience. As the symphony closed the audience erupted into cheers at what was a stunning performance. So….. If you missed this one there is still time to put the orchestra’s 2nd Concert on June 9 in your diaries..The evening will open with Weber’s sparkling overture to his final opera “Oberon” which was completed in 1826 just 2 months before the composer’s death. It remains the most popular piece from the opera and often features in concert programmes. It will be followed by Neilsen’s Flute Concerto composed in 1926. The concerto is unusual being in 2 quite short movements and prominently featuring a basstrombone in the orchestra. It is a gentle and quite melodic piece with a challenging solo part for the flute. The soloist is Stefan Cunningham. The Sinfonia does like to explore lesser known works of 20th Century composers and we were introduced to Neilsen’s Helios Overture in the 2018 season. The concert concludes with Brahms 1st Symphony. Begun in 1854 it was not finally completed to the composer’s satisfaction until 1876. Often referred to as “Beethoven’s tenth” because of the similarity of the theme in the final movement to the finale of the 9th ‘Choral’ Symphony of Beethoven. Please do come along and enjoy some fine music playing and please also give some thought to becoming a patron (£75 per year) or a Friend (£35 per year) and support one of the few orchestra’s playing live music in Norfolk and Suffolk. At the centre of the Modern British Art scene, Cedric Morris’ influence extended into the field of horticulture, becoming an award winning plantsman and an acknowledged influence on Beth Chatto, amongst others. “It’s absolutely thrilling that Hugh St Clair (already familiar to our Boule-in customers for his stylish fabric designs) is coming to us on Wednesday 26th June, together with some unique Cedric Morris artefacts, to give two short talks before holding a book signing for his recently released publication 'A Lesson in Art and Life'. “says Cathy "Hugh’s book explores the richly creative lives of this amazing couple and all those who were lucky enough to encounter them first hand. Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday May 13th 2019: Selecting clematis for the garden can be a problem - there are just too many to choose from - there are clematis for sun or shade, in all colours and sizes, of different habits and they needing pruning in different ways, but with the help of Martin Gibbison, our speaker for May, this was all made much easier. The viticella types are tough, they are not prone to mildew and pruning is easy - cut down to thirty centimetres and they will flower again. For scent he recommended tritonata - with a perfume of sweet almonds and with tiny star shaped flowers, certain types can even be used as ground cover. He showed us how simple it is to take cuttings with a practical demonstration and advised on cultivation. Plant them only deep enough to cover the lower buds for protection, after planting cut off any flowers to encourage root growth and feed with tomato food and after planting put down a mulch . However be warned as we discovered some can grow to as much as 50 metres so do your homework! Monday June 10th 2019: This is a busy month for us with plenty on offer. The club is visiting Peter Beales roses at Attleborough on Monday 10th June. Friends of the Ipswich Museums The main body of the talk will be about Christchurch Mansion and of the three families who lived in it from 1549 until it became a museum in 1894. We shall be shown a number of portraits and hear some fascinating stories. There will be brief accounts of the Priory that preceded Christchurch Mansion on this site and of the early origins of the Ipswich Museum and Ipswich Art School. Down to Earth ...with Dave When we moved to our new house the previous owners left behind in the garden a large heavy concrete bird bath partly hidden under some bushes, also a very large terracotta Ali Baba type urn. The bird bath was soon cleaned up and in use by the birds, the large urn was not so easy to find a use for, as over the years it had become very dirty and stained. We tried it in various places but it never quite fitted in. Now with the new area of gravel this seemed to be the ideal place for it. After much cleaning, including the careful use of a pressure washer, the now pristine urn has been given pride of place in the middle of the gravel. It has been planted up with a small conifer in the middle and several trailing white flowers around the edge, some colour is provided by pansies. The whole arrangement is in a container so it can be replaced as required. It really has become a focal point, just goes to show that everything eventually has a use. With the much welcome rain it is now time to get on with the various planting out on the allotment. The greenhouse raised sweetcorn plants can be planted out into the fenced off area, they are planted in a square rather than rows to aid with pollination. Other plants to go out will be sunflowers, french beans, courgettes, squash and dahlias, hopefully we won't get any more frost. Some gaps have appeared in the directly sown spinach and chard, these can just be reseeded - the new sowings will soon catch up, they will all need thinning out as soon as they are at a manageable size. Regularly earth up potatoes. If you have any over wintered fuchsias that seem dead don't give up on them just yet as they may well still be alive, just be patient a bit longer. Keep picking rhubarb and asparagus as the more you pick the more they grow. Why is it that weeds grow so quick after rain? The best tool at the momemt is the hoe. Keep an eye out for pests such as the bright red lily beetle, if not picked off and destroyed the the nasty grubs they produce will soon devastate the green leaves. There is a lot of debate about the use of slug pellets at the moment. The use of metaldehyde in slug pellets is to be banned from spring 2020. DEFRA say that it poses an unacceptable risk to birds and mammals. The ban will stop farmers and commercial growers from creating widespread pollution of rivers and fresh waters with these toxic pellets. I still prefer to pick up slugs etc. by hand and dispose of them in a pot of salty water. That's all for this time, Dave

As well as a dozen very different gardens to visit, Flowton's delightful 13th century church will host a colourful Flower Festival on the theme of Nursery Rhymes. There will also be exciting displays of military vehicles and vintage tractors, a local history exhibition and even a chance to see how eggs are produced and packed! What's more, refreshments, lunches and cream teas will be available throughout the weekend at St Mary’s Church. Proceeds will go to help maintain St Mary's Church, Flowton, and to FIND (Families in Need), the Ipswich food and furniture bank which provides crucial support to many local families and individuals in need. June brings us to the Stratford Hills Horse Trials on 15th &16th. It mean a lot to us since many of our volunteers help out over the weekend, manning the crossings, stewarding, fence judging and generally doing anything to support the event. The live herd has often lent its stables to visitors for this competition but our ponies don’t actually join in. The course is so attractive and well managed some of the UK’s top riders now bring their young horses to this Horse Trials for their education. The setting is beautiful so its well worth joining us there for a great walk in the country and lots to of entertainment. Our riders are beginning to practise for our Shelley Show at the end of term. As we did last year, we are splitting the two events up: the Dressage competition will be on either 11th or 18th June and the Countryside Challenge and prize giving will be on June 23rd. So much hard work goes in to getting riders, horses and the Centre looking spick and span, I am quite unable to doze off quietly when the yard is so busy. My photo shows Bob having a pre show bath in the interest of looking his competition best. The summer seems to be packed with activity for everyone. Our fund raising team enjoyed a novel experience packing bags for shoppers in Hadleigh’s Morrisons store on Good Friday. Paul Ballard ran the Manchester marathon on April 7th for us, and Adam Bensusan ran the London marathon on 28th April. I’d take my hat off to them if I had one. Then the team manned our stall at The Hadleigh Show, and not a drop of cake was left over. Thank you to everyone who supported us at these events. Time now to add to my list of 30 good reasons for coming up here to join us! 7) Gareth, aged 6: “Riding fast” (he has just started trotting on Squidgey.) 8) A more thought provoking statement form my friend David: “its something purposeful to do, an activity that is good for my mental health. I’m not historically horsey but I have learnt so much about horses whilst working here, and working with them is therapeutic in itself. The calm, peaceful, steady atmosphere at the Centre is a plus. Charity Race Night On Friday May 3rd at Nayland Village Hall, a Race Night was held to raise funds for ‘WomenVCancer’, a charity which supports the three women’s cancers, Breast Cancer Care, Ovarian Cancer Action and Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust. It was an evening of great fun, with a Fish & Chip supper, bar, and an excellent Prize Draw. Thanks to the generosity of many local businesses which either sponsored a race, or donated a prize, an amazing amount of £1,505.00 was raised, which will be added to my challenge fund of well over £3,000.00 already raised by my book sales on Hadleigh Market, and sale of my artwork at Craft Sales during the past year. In November this year, along with a group of like minded women of all ages I will be cycling Coast to Coast Costa Rica, my final of three challenges for the charity, since 2013. We will cycle an average 45 miles daily for 6 days, both on and off road, through dense jungle, past volcanoes and cross rivers in order to reach our final destination. This will be a tough challenge with some testing hilly terrain! None of this would be possible without the support of family, friends, local businesses and sometimes strangers, so I thank you all very much for your generous donations. Hadleigh’s 5th Annual Cycling Sportive Sunday 15th September Hadleigh Cycling Club will be running the fifth annual Gayford Flyer on Sunday, 15th September 2019. The Gayford Flyer is a noncompetitive cycle sportive. There are two signed rides of 62 miles (100km) and 31 miles (50km). Full details and the story of Oswald Gayford can be found at www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk Entry is via the British Cycling website (www.britishcycling.org.uk) and the last day is Sunday, 8th September. There is no entry on the day. Riders pay £12.50 to enter and helmets are compulsory. “Last year’s sportive was fantastic”, said Mike Motteram, Chairman of Hadleigh Cycling Club. “Most of the riders and their families stayed around and enjoyed refreshments and live music at The George.” British Cycling said that the Flyer “was a super event – well thought through, well executed and very enjoyable to be part of.” One of the entrants emailed afterwards,”Completed the Spitfire route. Thought it was one of the best sportives I've done, friendly marshals, riders, superb route and great atmosphere, mind you the weather couldn't have been better. I'll be signing up next year.” Our Cycling Club is anxious to offer the broadest range of opportunities for local folk to enjoy cycling. We want to attract the “super fit” and the “less than super fit”. During the summer we have rides on Mondays, Fridays, some Saturdays and Sunday. Hadleigh Nursing Home welcomes Tracey as new activities coordinator Hadleigh Nursing Home’s new activities coordinator will be no stranger to people in the town. For Tracey Alexander has held all kinds of positions and been involved in many different groups in Hadleigh. She has joined the team at Hadleigh Nursing Home after working at another care home for five years as head of activities. Tracey said: “It is really important for a care home to be at the heart of the local community and I am really keen for our staff and residents to engage with the local community. “We love to welcome local schools, playgroups and community groups into Hadleigh Nursing Home. Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group Community Connector Scheme Did you wake up today and think “more of the same” and wish something different and interesting could happen in your life? Has one of life’s many challenges been thrown at you recently, and you are not quite sure where to turn for advice and information? Have you received professional advice to take greater care of your health and wellbeing, to be more active, physically or socially? Have you recently moved to the area or just find yourself alone because of bereavement, separation or your children growing up? Then the Community Connector Scheme could be for you! What does the scheme offer? The Community Connector Scheme aims to do just what it says! It will support you to connect with: • social activities, clubs and groups and like-minded individuals in this community • the right advice and information for your local situation The Scheme does this by offering a private face to face discussion with a “Community Connector” to explore what matters to you and NOT ‘What is the matter with you?’ Together with the Community Connector over up to four appointments, you will build your own personal action plan around what is important to you and be supported to put this plan into action. This may include access to: • Debt, benefits, housing advice • Health and fitness groups, such as walking, cycling and dance • Peer support groups, arts, culture and history groups • Local volunteering opportunities When and how can I see a Community Connector? The Community Connector operates an appointment system to ensure you have personal time to explore what is important to you, to develop an action plan and review it over the next sessions. An appointment can be made by calling: 01473 835445 The Community Connector has a mobile “office”, which parks up in your locality and provides a private space to have your conversation. Where it is not possible to get to the bus, it may be possible to arrange a lift to help get you there or alternatively, you may be able to have a home visit. Would you like to be the Local Recorder for Capel St Mary The Suffolk Local History Council runs a Recorders Scheme throughout Suffolk. We administer a network of volunteers to ensure that the ‘present’ is adequately recorded at local level for the ‘future’. A Recorder will note significant happenings in their parish and collect their local parish magazines, leaflets, election pamphlets and newspaper cuttings. At the end of each year, they are asked to submit a short report summarising the activities of their parish. The reports are deposited at the Suffolk Record Office and available to future researchers together with the collected items. If you are interested, please look at the Recorders Pack by visiting www.slhc.org.uk to acquaint yourself with the guidelines of the scheme. You do not need to be a historian; you do not need any qualifications other than an interest in your parish. Although he had plenty to say about dogs last month, I can forgive the little upstart as he mentioned the sad fact that black and black/white cats are often overlooked. Even sadder are Betty, a black cat and a pretty tabby and white called Fat Cat. Please don’t be put off, she does not have a weight problem. They came in last May when their owner died and need a quiet adult-only home as they are very timid. Can you offer them the love and time they deserve, maybe a new name too? The Sanctuary should be looking spruce if the new paths are finished, ready for our Open Day next month. Stour Valley U3A Past Meetings Our speaker on 8 May was Dr Helen Geake, National Finds Adviser, Portable Antiquities Scheme. She talked about local finds recorded by PAS, archaeology found by the public. She explained what to do if you find an historic artefact whilst gardening, beachcombing or walking the dog. This talk looked at how archaeologists reconstruct items and will include details of local finds. Future Meetings & Diary Dates Dr Stephen Ashworth, Senior Lecturer at UEA will talk on “Lies, Damned Lies & Statisticsâ€? on 12 June. How good are we at intuitively judging probabilities? Should everyone be able to earn more than the average wage Is it a scandal that doctors/dentists/academics are below the national average? An excursion into statistics & probabilities, which is hoped, will encourage critical consideration of the statistics with which we are bombarded every day. How the BTO is using the very latest technology to uncover the mysteries of bird migration. It’s been another busy Spring at Kersey, having played host for a 4th year running to the nationally organised Drive It Day on Sunday 28th April. Despite the chilly weather, a far cry from the glorious weather we all enjoyed over the Easter Bank Holiday, there was an impressive turnout of exhibitors. The Friends of Kersey Mill would like to thank all the visitors, volunteers and everyone who contributed towards making the day another success. The proceeds totalled £505, which was divided between Roonagh O Halloran’s Just Giving Fund and The Friends of Kersey Mill. Together with an additional £150 kindly donated by JLS Catering, Roonagh’s family were delighted to receive £405 and thanked everyone for their kind and generous support. Photographs taken from this year’s event can be found on the Kersey Mill website gallery page. The Suffolk Mills Open weekend on 12-13th May encouraged a good number of visitors to Kersey Mill; it also prompted local Mill enthusiast and author, Patrick Taylor, to visit the site. Patrick was born and brought up in Truro, Cornwall, where he was educated at Truro School and the Architectural Association. His qualifications include an MA in Conservation Studies (York) and a BSc in Mathematics (OU) and he has worked as a Conservation Architect based near Ipswich, Suffolk. Patrick, formerly Heritage Officer at Babergh District Council, has written several books that have been published by Polystar Press. His latest, entitled “Drainage Windmills on the Broads”, was inspired by his passion of touring the Norfolk Broads by boat. This book expands upon previous publications by Rex Wailes and Arthur Smith, indeed some of the Mills have been documented as far back as the Domesday Book of 1086. Patrick’s guide is set out on a river by river basis for those visiting the Broads by boat. It offers a comprehensive survey of sites where Mills have either been lost or only survive as ruins. Restoration work continues at Kersey Mill; unfortunately the oak flooring on the first floor had shrunk so the floorboards had to be lifted and closed up which is now complete. Dixon Dart League Finals Night The annual darts finals and presentation of trophies was held at the Royal British Legion on Monday 15th April 2019. A decent crowd were treated to some great darts which included three maximum 180’s and a 160 from the talented Jade Sparkes along with some high class finishing from several players. Mark Smith took the mens singles title with a 2-1 win over Darren Rampling in a high quality match, while Nadine Leathers showed her class taking the ladies singles 2-0 from Jade Sparkes with some devastating finishing. Veteran pair of Colin Hynard and Derek Cole could not make it three wins on the trot in the pairs as they were beaten by the Rebels pair of Glenn Bentley and Paul Stocker in a close game. Ladies Doubles went to Debbie Butcher and Natalie Rampling with Emma Witt and Bev Mayes runners up. The triples final saw the George trio of Geoff Parmenter, Les Mayes and Ivan Clements taking on the Cockney Rebels top boys of Tom King, Glenn Bentley and Mark Chaplin, with the George coming out on top to win a close fought match. The knock out cup was won by the Cockney Rebels with a 3-1 win over the Beorge Bees, wins from Mark Chaplin, Paul Stalker and Tom King for the Rebels, with Tony Smith winning for the Bees. Well the season’s in full swing, competitions have started, and the sun’s shining. What could be better? We ran a couple of open days at the weekend and despite the inclement (that’s just a nice word for bad...) weather on one of the days we still had 20 people turning up to see what it’s like, and get a bit of coaching. Four of them immediately joined up and we look forward to more following. Our thanks to the volunteers who made it possible. Club players range from the very good to those who just like to turn up for the casual social roll-ups three times a week, which new members particularly enjoy until they grow in confidence. Everyone whether a member or not is very welcome to come and watch the Senior County Cup Final which we’re hosting at 6.30 on 21 June when there’s a chance to see top players in action. Our links with the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance continue and we ran our first session of boules outdoor with them in May. We believe it’s a really valuable contribution to the life of Hadleigh and club volunteers all enjoy being involved. There are games going on most evenings from Monday to Thursday so feel free to come and watch. Air Conditioning – Is your car contributing to climate change We all rely on air conditioning systems in our car for comfort on those hot days, but od we really understand how it works and the environmental impact it may have. To put it into layman’s terms our cars have a pressurised sealed system with a refrigerant gas that turns hot air into cold air. Should this stop working we all think it just needs a simple recharge of gas. Have we thought where that gas has gone and what it has done to the ozone layer? The first cars to have air conditioning fitted would have had an ozone depleting gas called R12 which was then banned in production vehicles from 2000. This was replaced by a new gas called R134a, which in 2011 the European Commission asked the motor industry to find an alternative, as this is also an ozone depleting gas and would be contributing to global warming. There is now a new gas being more frequently used on modern cars, called R1234yf which is a non ozone depleting gas, with the introduction of this, the older style gasses have been limited in production and will decrease every year to make way for the new cleaner systems. All vehicles have an identification label in the engine compartment or underneath the bonnet. As licences air conditioning technicians, if your vehicle’s air conditioning has stopped working, the first step is to determine as to whether there is any gas left in the system. If there is none present, we are not allowed by law to just recharge it without first carrying out a nitrogen pressure test to check for leaks. Nitrogen is used as it is a non ozone depleting gas, so it is therefore safe to use for an environmentally friendly test. Crockatt Garage have now invested in new equipment along with training to deal with this new type of refrigerant in newer cars. Obviously we can still service and repair the older systems but due to its restricted supply the cost of the procedure is increasing year on year.
