RDA Celebrates 50 Years
This year the RDA celebrates 50 years of official business. There were small groups in existence before the Riding for the Disabled Association was founded, but we all come under one big umbrella now, which ensures our standards are kept high and our work gets the publicity it deserves. In addition to that anniversary, 2019 marks the 30th year of our group’s foundation! So watch this space for news of all our celebrations and parties to come and keep some gaps in your diaries to join us. Last month the Centre put on its 20th Annual Carol Service! We were lucky with the weather again and the yard was full of our families and friends. Refreshments at The Centre were lavish as usual, and much appreciated. Rev. Sue Foster took the service, with a talk by Father Jo Delfgou, the new Rector of Hadleigh and Shelley. Members of Serendipity Choir and the Boxted Methodist Silver Band made a huge contribution to the music and singing for which we were most grateful. Our Baby Jesus was very well behaved and the angels and wise men did their bit too. Our Ponies were represented in Church by lanterns on the Altar. It was a lovely end to the term, and thank you to Margaret for all her organisation and the hard work of her team on that Saturday in December. Calling All Apprentices and Businesses Hiring Apprentices or offering in-employment training We are delighted to be able to say that we were able to make grants to two deserving applicants in October. One who is serving an apprenticeship at an estate agency in Hadleigh and one who is an apprentice artworker. We are hugely grateful to the Mayor of Hadleigh, Councillor Peter Matthews, who has chosen the Arthur Gaell for Apprenticing Foundation as one of his charities to benefit from his fund-raising whilst he is in office. This was completely unexpected and so completely wonderful. Thank you Peter, from all of us. Our main criteria, as laid down by the founder of this charity way back in the mists of the 17th Century, is that grants will only be made to those living within the IP7 postcode. Their apprenticeship can be anywhere, so long as they live in IP7. Recent Meetings On 5th December Peter Parfitt presented “Reflections on The Scilly Isles” and our December 19th meeting featured Brantham’s Famous Quizmaster Paul Oliver who presented his now very famous “Xmas Quiz”. Future Meetings John Hammond will explain the skill of “Will Writing” at our 16 January meeting and we hold our New Year Lunch at the popular Haywain, Little Bromley, on 6th February when our spouses and Probus Widows join us for what will be an enjoyable event and a tasty meal. Meeting Venue We meet at the convenient St John Ambulance HQ, Manningtree, CO11 1EB. New members are welcomed Our Club endeavours to be simple in structure, be free of the constraints and obligations of service clubs, and involve members to a minimal cost. New Members are always very welcome to join us at a future meeting of the Stour Valley Men’s Probus Club just join us at 10am on a meeting date. The club is directed primarily to providing fellowship between members who are compatible with each other, and provide the opportunity for development of acquaintances. Stowmarket Chorale holds audience spellbound The Apex concert hall in Bury St Edmunds was packed to the rafters for Radio Suffolk’s Carol Concert on 1 December in aid of Children in Need. A varied programme included local choral society Stowmarket Chorale, a brass band, a children’s choir, readings, and opportunities for the audience to sing along. Both audience and performers went away afterwards with happy smiles and in thoroughly festive mood, and had raised £3000 for Children in Need. Stowmarket Chorale brought out all the emotion and drama of the popular nineteenth-century French carol O Holy Night, and their Music Director Tom Appleton performed the solo melody in The Three Kings while his choir provided the serene and contemplative chorale tune interwoven with it. An exuberant version of Jingle Bells had the audience laughing along with the choir. Then in the second half came a change of gear - Silent Night was performed by Stowmarket Chorale with breathtaking poise, first hummed, very, very quietly and then sung with feeling in both German and English before returning to the final, tiny humming. There were some five hundred people in the hall, including children, but you could have heard a pin drop. The Chorale then showed it could let its hair down too and give the music some welly, as it belted out Slade’s Merry Christmas Everybody – but it still managed clear diction and some very well-controlled sudden pianissimos. Stowmarket Chorale showed off the full dynamic and stylistic range that can be achieved by this 60-strong choir under the leadership of its talented and charismatic new Music Director Tom Appleton, appointed less than four months ago. The next major concert by Stowmarket Chorale will be Brahms’ well-loved German Requiem, at the United Reformed Church in Stowmarket on 30 March. Rehearsals start on Weds 9 January 7.30-9.30pm at Chilton Primary School, Violet Hill Road, Stowmarket. New singers welcome. www.stowmarketchorale.org.uk

Learning and Growing Together Able Writers’ Day Two of our children attended an Able Writers’ Day at Chilton Community Primary School on Wednesday 10 October 2018. They worked with the brilliant poet, illustrator and performer, Ed Boxall. The children gained a great deal from working with him throughout the day. The event also tied in nicely with National Poetry Day. Guide Dogs for the Blind Assembly All of our children were visited by members of the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. They kindly presented an assembly for the school followed by a workshop for our Year 3/4 children. Girls Science Day On Monday 5 November, we sent children from Bildeston and Whatfield to an event at Old Buckenham Hall School. The day was specifically aimed at girls in year 5 and was an exciting opportunity for them to compete in a variety of STEM subject challenges. They had the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to work together to problem solve and complete tasks. Teams were judged and prizes awarded to the leaders in each activity. Sports Event This Term Children from across the school took part in the following events: U11 Cross Country at Hadleigh High School/ U11 Tag Rugby at Hadleigh High School, U11 Tag Rugby at Inspire Suffolk, U9 Dodgeball at Inspire Suffolk/ U11 Dodgeball at Inspire Suffolk. All of the children that took part thoroughly enjoyed the events and came back with great results and some fair play awards all of which are handed to the children at our weekly Celebration assembly. PTFA News The PTFA held a very successful Cinema Night for the children on Thursday 18 October. The children also enjoyed a treat whilst they watched the movie! Lots of our children came dressed for the occasion and had beany bags and cushions to be comfortable! The PTFA also held a Christmas Fayre on Friday 30 November. They raised in excess of £700 for the school which is wonderful! The PTFA have recently provided the school with books, phonics resources, and crackers for our Christmas lunch. We really are very appreciative of the work that they do for us. OneLife Programme Kingfisher class have been taking part in the OneLife programme on Tuesday afternoons across a six week period. Each weekly session focussed on being healthy and why it is important to take care of ourselves. With helpful tips and advice the children got to learn all about making a healthy packed lunch, the importance of physical activity, a balanced diet and making healthy snack choices. Children In Need We supported Children in Need on Friday 16 November raising a total of £97.60 by donating ten pence pieces to cover our giant Pudsey template! Children and staff also raised £48.74 for St Elizabeth Hospice and £33.42 for Macmillan Cancer charities through donations for refreshments at school events. Fidelis Activity News Best Wishes For The Coming Year To All Who Read Our Monthly Column Ballet:- A delightful, enchanting performance of The Nutcracker Suite beamed in live to a full audience at Cineworld, Ipswich seemed to signal the start of all things seasonal. Christmas Supper:- Over 40 members attended and much enjoyed the annual Christmas supper at the Hintlesham Golf Club. A welcome drink was followed by a tasty two course meal, coffee and mints creatively wrapped by Lin Slaughter. Service was friendly and attentive Rodin’s The Kiss:- This iconic piece is on loan from The Tate to Christchurch Mansion until 28th April 2019. Members were introduced to the contents of the complete exhibition by Curator, Emma Roodhouse. It was fascinating to hear how it came about, the pieces in it and their connection with each other. Conservationist, Carrie Willis, gave us a remarkable insight into her work conserving some of the neglected pieces from the Museum’s basement. It was good to hear that there is also a link with this town with work by Maggi Hambling and Hadleigh - born sculptor, Thomas Woolner. After the introductory talk members were able to visit the gallery where all the pieces were skilfully displayed. A free exhibition not to be missed. Speaker:- A chance encounter with Turkey over 25 years ago prompted Jenny Gibbs to leave the UK and move permanently to her newly discovered heaven on earth. Dressed in local costume, Jenny recounted her experiences from her first arrival to the present day.it was clear that Jenny was a true Turkish Shirley Valentine. Having learnt the language and Liz Wilson and Jenny Gibbs with bought an old farmhouse with her traditional Turkish pantaloons Turkish partner Mustapha, they now divide their time between their restored abode and Suffolk. After the talk members thoughly enjoyed trying on and buying the many colourful, exotic Turkish scarves and stoles which Jenny had brought along. JD
Hadleigh Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) If there’s one New Year resolution we’d like you to make for 2019, it’s this one: “I promise not to miss any health appointments”. In November 2018, Hadleigh and Boxford surgeries had a combined rate of 274 missed appointments for GP’s and Nurses. For the 6 months, June to November the figure was 1132. Please help the Practice to help you and keep your appointment or, if you can’t attend, ring in and cancel. A Huge Thank You from the Alison Fracella Research Trust and the Brendan Oakes Trust A huge thank you to everyone who came along to the Ansell Centre on Saturday 24th November to give us, once again, such wonderful support at our 7th joint Quiz Night. The Centre was packed for the event, we had 19 teams! Everyone said what a great evening it was with lots of fun and laughter. The anagram round was quite a challenge although our winners (for the second year running!) scored Congratulations to the Winning Team an amazing 100%! As usual the Ploughman’s Supper went down well! On the night, after all expenses, we raised a fantastic £1,120 which we have divided between our two charities. Almost every penny raised will go towards the work we are supporting as our charities have minimal administration costs. The Brendan Oakes Trust supports teenagers facing cancer and the Alison Fracella Research Trust is helping to fund research into brain cancer, especially in young people, at the Royal Marsden Hospital. A big thank you to Avis Printers for printing our tickets and for selling them for us in the shop. Polstead Village Hall A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to our Christmas Fair on the 1st December at Polstead Village Hall, another very successful day, even though the weather was against us, with all proceeds going to the village shop. The stall holders did well also, some asking if they could come back next year! All the contributions for the tombola, raffle prizes and cakes were very much appreciated and helped to make the day the success it was. I hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas and that your new year is blessed with much happiness and good fortune. At this time of year most of us make New Year resolutions which can be related to our health, wellbeing and fitness. More often than not though these resolutions don’t last, and we can end up going back to our old habits, even before the month of January is out. In order to ensure that you can make resolutions that are achievable and that will last, take smaller steps to reaching your bigger outcomes. Whatever your end goal is, break this down into smaller chunks, i.e. short, medium and long term goals. After all, an elephant can only be eaten one bite at a time (metaphorically speaking). For example, you could aim to reach your long term goal in 3 months and this could be something like, “I would like to reduce my body fat % by 5% and increase my fitness levels”. To make this more achievable, your short term goal (within 4 weeks) could be, “I will have a PT session once a week”. Your medium term goal (within 8 weeks) could be, “I will have a PT session once a week, run twice a week and aim to lower my body fat % by 2%”. By your final 4 week block, as your fitness routine has become embedded, your final goal to ensure your body fat % has decreased by 5% can be achieved, alongside your increasing fitness levels.

New Home for Lavenham Post Office In June 2016 the community in Lavenham lost the permanent site for its post office. Since July of that year the village has been served by a mobile post office van. The service, although limited has been good. However queuing outside in the rain, snow or blistering heat has not. Lavenham Parish Council have negotiated to purchase the building which previously housed Babergh’s Tourist Information Centre, which was closed down in October of this year. The building, at 2 Lady Street, will become the new home of the Hosted Outreach Post Office. It will be operate for three hours a day, four days a week; this is the maximum the post office will currently allow. It is hoped that once it can be proved there is a demand from the community the Post Office will become a Sub Post Office with longer opening hours. The Post Office are asking for views on their hosted outreach service. The consultation will close on 21st January 2019. It is expected to be completed by the middle of January 2018 when we will open to also provide a community and visitors information service in the building. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk When I last wrote this column I chose the subject of supporting local shops in the run up to Christmas. I did receive one stern email complaining that I had not written about Brexit. I am afraid that reader will be disappointed again. Frankly, events are moving so fast in Westminster that by the time this is in print who knows what the latest development will have been, and I cannot help but suspect many of you are heartily sick of endless Brexit debate and just want us to ‘get on with it’. Most importantly, I am determined that Brexit’s dominance of political discourse must not be to the detriment of other critical matters that affect our daily lives. Crime is a key example. I have appeared regularly in Commons debates on crime to state my concern that we seem to be experiencing a shift to a more aggressive era. Aside from the statistics, I have based this principally on the stark reality of a whole series of recent incidents in South Suffolk, the most high profile being ram raids on shops in Hadleigh and Long Melford. But behind the scenes, and particularly in our rural communities, there is great anxiety about a range of crimes we probably don’t even hear about – theft of machinery, hare coursing, and the intimidation and vandalism associated with the latter. I was therefore pleased to hold a summit on rural crime in Lavenham Village Hall last month, attended by the Police and Crime Commissioner and Chief Constable, together with around 100 farmers concerned about criminality. Few attendees had not been a victim of rural crime. Thus, I was pleased that in December’s Police funding settlement the Government announced up to £9m in additional funding for the Suffolk Constabulary, a significant increase, should the PCC choose to use the full powers to raise the council tax ‘precept’ that we have now granted him. If he does so, he will have my full support if this also translates into more resource on the front line and the chance of fighting back on behalf of the law abiding majority.
Hadleigh Walkers Our first walk of 2019 will be on Saturday 12th January. A nice gentle walk of around 5.5 miles to get going after the Christmas and the New year binges. This will be a circular walk from Hadleigh. As usual, we will meet as St Mary’s School car park at 0930 and we should be back in Hadleigh around mid-day. Our route will be Hill Farm, Rands Farm, Pott’s Cottages, Pott’s Farm, Halfway house then, depending how muddy it is, either Constitution Hill or Park Farm and back to Hadleigh. We will finish at The George and those who wish can join us for lunch and discuss walking preferences for the year. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy or rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. Hello, my name is John Middleditch and I have been working in the building trade all my working life, at present 59 years and 5 months. I started work for Percy Brown Builders in Sudbury on July 28th 1959 as a trainee decorator and in October 1964 I left that firm and worked for Barnes Decorators, also in Sudbury. I learnt more in four years with Barnes, than 5 years with Browns. In 1968 I was made redundant from Barnes. After two weeks on the dole I got some work at a building site at Fordham in Essex for four weeks before going to Pilgrims of Bures for two months, before going to Grimwoods builders in Sudbury, the firm I had tried to get on when I left school. I worked there for four years before going self-employed. This book is not about painting a window or ceiling, but the quirky things that you do not expect to experience in a day’s work.

The director of the county’s leading heritage charity has put a call out for more entries to its second photographic competition, aimed at capturing beautiful examples of modern architecture. The Suffolk Preservation Society teamed up with Suffolk Design Review Panel, which was set up to encourage high levels of design in new developments, and launched the second Suffolk Beauty photographic competition in the middle of the summer. The brief is for photographs of a single or group of modern buildings which entrants really like and which exhibit good design. ‘Modern’ is being defined as meaning anything built after 1945. These can be located within Suffolk or beyond its boundaries. The brief allows photographers to include modern buildings in situ – ie those which have been successfully blended into their wider landscape or just a detail on a single building that exhibits a high level of design and craftsmanship. The first Suffolk Beauty competition in 2016/7 received well over one hundred high quality entries, mostly pictures of the county’s outstandingly beautiful natural landscapes. According to the Society’s director, Fiona Cairns: “We knew that the second competition was going to be a far tougher assignment, but there’s a strategic reason behind this. “We decided to focus on modern beauty because Suffolk is facing unprecedented levels of new housing in coming years and we are looking for images that reflect fresh and exciting architecture that people are happy to live with and that Suffolk is, or would be, proud of.� “We’ve had some early entries, but now is the time for the county’s many amateur photographers to start sending in their submissions by the dozens. In the words of Delia Smith from across the border, ‘come on, let’s be havin’ you!’� The deadline for submissions is 28 February 2019. A panel will then select a short-list with the winners due to be announced in spring 2019. Prizes will be awarded, with details of these to follow soon. Kersey Mill Newsletter Well 2018 has been a fantastic and very memorable year for Kersey Mill. Quite considerable progress with the restoration has been made. We have now completed the restoration of the Hurst Frame. This leaves the stone furniture, runner stones and crown wheel repairs before we are able to produce flour. ‘Drive it day’ was a huge success with thousands of visitors. What a privilege it was to have some of the world’s most beautiful vintage vehicles on display. The year ended with Santa’s Workshop attracting more visitors than ever before from near and far. This was a demonstration of amazing support for an event that now attracts visitors from literally miles away. London Essex Cambridgeshire to name but a few. We also welcomed back groups of disabled & disadvantaged children a group of deaf children from The Ipswich Children’s Deaf Society where guided through their magical experience with an interpreter who was signing for them and many other children who attended with their friends and family. Many thanks to Armour Engineering at East Bergholt Glass & Craft and all those that helped stage the event especially the amazing Santa’s Workshop team that have worked so very hard to produce an event to be very proud of. Pilates @ Hadleigh Physiotherapy Pilates is a form of exercise and body conditioning devised by German born Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. It focuses on breathing, alignment, core strength and flexibility. Clinical Pilates uses modified versions of Pilates’ original mat work exercises, making them appropriate for people recovering from injury or those working around specific conditions. At Hadleigh Physiotherapy we offer 1:1, 2:1 sessions or small classes (max 5 clients). There was a terrific turnout at Hadleigh Cycling Club’s AGM and Xmas meal when the Committee thanked those standing down and welcomed new members. Mike Motteram will continue in the role of Chairman, supported by an enthusiastic Committee which has been strengthened with the inclusion of Tim Collins who will be managing the website and Fiona Holland, the new membership secretary. Mike stressed “the importance of continuity and thanked the Secretary, Simon King and Treasurer, Nick Wilder for their hard work to ensure the Club runs effectively.” Simon will also continue to coach the Juniors in Spring 2019 along with Martin Nichols, Adam Chamberlain, Perrie Higgs and Gale Pryor. The Club is hoping to train up new Level 1 coaches early in the New Year. “We’re already looking to encourage new riders in the Spring with Farhad Abdly and Julian Cecil taking on the lead in organising Sunday social rides. Gale Pryor, Kate Billingham, and Lucy Jay will again be working with women who want to take up riding.” Rickaby Shearly-Sanders, Phil Barnes (Time Trials), Lucy Jay (Parents Rep) and Sue Calver (Welfare) have all agreed to continue on the Committee. The Committee thanked departing Chris Heron, Ride Lead and Coach for all his efforts to steer the Club over the years, Paul Harman and Ben Lowe who has been our Junior Rep. The Chairman handed a cheque for £500 for Prostate Cancer UK to Paul Spraggons, to supplement his incredible efforts last year to raise money for the charity. Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday December 10th 2018: 2018 has been an eventful year for the club a new acting chairman, new members of the committee, membership increasing, outings to pastures new and a wide range of visiting speakers, all in our 50th year. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better along comes the Christmas quiz! Mulled wine and festive fare helped us face six rounds of questions, all with a horticultural theme. There was a tie for first place and two tie breaks to decide the winning team - a very close run thing and a very enjoyable evening. Another winner on the night was Fiona, who can be seen in the photo with Ruth, our president, being presented with a garden voucher and, for the first time this year, the chairman's trophy. This goes to the club member who is the overall winner of the monthly competitions, it is theirs to keep for the year. Our next get together on Monday January 14th 2019: Our first speaker for the new year is Robert Canham from Notcutts garden centre. His theme is very apt for the new season- 'Plants for problem places'. The evening also includes the usual raffle and plant sale. At this time of year we look back on our achievements in 2018 and strengthen our plans for 2019. 2018 was a great year at Orchard Barn. We made steady progress at reinstating the mediaeval Suffolk timber-frame longhouse and have almost completed the shingle roofing of the additional craft room. We opened new vegetable beds and enjoyed excellent harvests from the polytunnel that was erected at the start of the year. Next year we plan to make further improvements to the barn to grow the range of activities that we can offer. We will also increase the number and scope of courses that we provide. New volunteers joined us in 2018 and we hope to welcome more in 2019 to help with organic gardening, site maintenance and work in the woods, as well as administrative roles. Dancers, costumes and set changes as never seen before. The lecture looks at the original costumes & plays excerpts of the inventive score. SANDY BURNETT worked as Music Director for the RSC, the National Theatre & various other West End Theatres. He was also a Radio 3 Music Presenter for ten years.
Down to Earth ...with Dave Generally I try to garden organically, this is not always possible. For instance, when vine weevils infest the fuchsias in pots or when black spot devastates the rose bushes, or perhaps something like ground elder or bindweed is trying to take over a flowerbed. On the whole things like slugs and snails can be controlled by picking them off and dropping them in a pot of salty water. Slug pellets are not used as they can be harmful to visiting hedgehogs and birds. If you encourage birds in the garden by regular feeding and keeping fresh water available then most of the aphid type pests are eaten by the various small birds that visit. The organic theme is very evident on the allotment with the use of massive amounts of home produced compost. Over the years the soil has been improved with the addition of barrow loads of this magic stuff. Making good compost is I think, very simple but not everyone agrees and it is easy to end up with a nasty, slimy smelly mess. Compost is made from rotted down organic material, virtually anything is compostable - garden waste, kitchen vegetable scraps including the outer leaves from leeks and brassicas, grass cuttings, paper shreddings, some newspaper and cardboard, leaves picked up with the lawnmomer and old bedding straw from the pet rabbit. Young weeds and foliage (but not roots) soft hedge trimmings, old flowers and bedding plants and, on the allotment, horse manure from the nearby stables plus some aviary floor sweepings. Some things not to put on the compost are meat, fish and dairy products, any cooked food, coal or coke ash (wood ash is fine), cat litter or disposable nappies. We seem to generate quite a lot of material so we have four large heaps on the allotment. When a heap is full it is covered with old carpet and left to rot down, the heaps are not turned and each heap is ready for use after about a year. The system in the garden is a bit different with a plastic dalek type bin used. In this the material is continually put in the top and removed from the bottom when ready. Getting the compost out can be a bit difficult so it is sometimes easier to lift the whole bin off to get to the bottom layer. The quality of this compost is better as it contains more spent potting compost and selected chopped up waste.This is mainly used to mix with bought in bags of multi purpose compost to make them go further in the numerous pots we have, it is not used for seed sowing or young plants. The secret is to feed the soil rather than the plant, and the best way to feed the soil is with homemade compost. It is nature's black gold, it will make your soil fertile as well as giving it a good structure. That's all for now, Dave

Milden Singers perform all-time classics in their Best of Broadway Concerts The Choir, who were dressed and sparkled like the cast of 42nd Street treated the audience to songs from this and other hit Broadway Musicals including Carousel to Showboat. As always their concerts include fun elements, solos and on this occasion a Male only Choir! The rousing finale which included ‘We’re in the Money’ was a fitting ending to the show, as all proceeds from the concerts, which totalled £1350 was donated to Motor Neurone Disease Association. This was gratefully received by both Mandy Coll’s who have been raising money locally for MNDA. Milden Singers next concerts will be on 17th and 18th May with more details to follow in due course

The New Year is here and you have decided that you would like to move house. Here are five things to think about when looking for a new property. Look at your budget, What can you afford? Be realistic and remember to factor in moving costs, stamp duty (if you are not a first time buyer), estate agent fees, legal fees, and also any survey fees. It is best to have your finances in order at this stage. Talk to your mortgage broker or your lender if you are obtaining a mortgage. Decide what area you want to move to. Check town or village websites and social media to see what the community is like that you would be moving into. When speaking with estate agents be positive about what you are looking for and your budget. If you don’t want to live in a house in the middle of nowhere tell them. When you short list a property, visit the area at least a couple of times at different times of the day. What may seem like a quiet road during daytime may become hectic in the evening. Also look at parking. If the house you are viewing does not have parking consider the parking areas. Could you park easily when you arrive to view the property? Finally when have found your perfect home, we advise that you have a full Homebuyers Survey. This is different from a lender valuation and involves a surveyor visiting the property to inspect both inside and out. They will then produce a report for your information. This may cost a few hundred pounds but we are sure you would rather pay this than move in and find a nasty shock which could cost thousands. Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 It’s not often an ex SESAW dog hits the headlines but two of our canine friends made the news recently. Hadleigh’s heroic hound Bowza, a Labrador cross, was featured on BBC Look East and the national press after sharing his body heat with a lady suffering a head injury. Bowza’s proud owner, Don Cox, said the dog seemed to understand the problem and stayed next to the shivering lady for over an hour until an ambulance arrived. My old friend Freddie, a very cute chihuahua cross, became the centre of attention during filming for a Channel 4 TV commercial. The little chap was chosen to appear in an ad with the equally handsome bigger chap in the photo, to advertise “Solidor” front doors. Of course Freddie was completely unfazed by the experience because we chihuahuas are often the star attraction. Apparently he has already be asked for his pawprint and might become more famous than me! I have no idea what animals may be available for rehoming when you read this so please keep an eye on our website or visit when we reopen on Thursday 17th January. Don’t forget to wear your wellies if the weather is wet! My vertically challenged canine friends usually return home with very muddy undercarriages, which is extremely uncomfortable, I can tell you! Do you want to sing yourself free and have fun? Help is at hand! Singing leader extraordinaire Chris Rowbury runs regular singing gettogethers in Hadleigh. These fun and friendly mornings of song are open to anyone who wants to sing. They take place every third Saturday of the month. Sing Out Saturdays run from 10.30am to 1pm. They are held at the Ansell Community Centre, Market Place, Hadleigh IP7 5DL. The first session of 2019 is on Saturday 19 January. Simply turn up on the day – no commitment needed and you don’t have to come every month. Sessions cost only £9 per person including refreshments. Everyone is welcome and no experience is necessary as Chris teaches all songs by ear. Every month there are new faces and new songs. Stour Valley U3A Past Meetings We do not have a speaker meeting in December but held our popular Christmas lunch this time at the Best Western Hotel, Copdock on Wednesday 5 December, this is always a very popular event and was enjoyed by all who attended. Future Meetings & Diary Dates Sally Dearman will speak to us on Wednesday 9 January on “Woman Can Fly”. This is the story of one women’s journey from jumping out of a landing window, then out of planes, to becoming a civil pilot, then the first women through the RAF’s fast-jet flying trains system. “An Afternoon with Joyce Grenfell” by Gillain Grinham is the subject for our 13th February meeting. Gillian is an Author, former teacher and a Director of plays & musicals. She will perform a series of monologues and songs from Joyce’s repertoire, interspersed with details of her much loved entertainer’s life. Toni Neobard & Kate Broad, family historians and authors will present “For Better or For Worse” on 13 March. This will be a light-hearted look at marriage and retionshiops through the eyes of Victorians. What happened if they didn’t marry and what if you did but were not happy with your choice? It will be a glimpse at bizarre goings-on showing wedded bliss wasn’t always so ! NEW - each month the Coffee Grinders will meet at The Lambe School, Gaston Street, East Bergholt, CO7 6SD from 10-12 noon. This meeting especially welcomes new members but gives all members the opportunity of meeting the activity Group Leaders and the Committee whilst enjoying a cup of coffee. The next meeting is on Friday 25 January. Membership Our main purpose is to encourage lifelong learning for those who are no longer in full time employment and emphasis is always placed on making learning active and fun as well as helping in developing friendships. We have a wide range of groups including language study, country walking, computer studies and gardens, churches and historic buildings visits. In the main, membership is drawn from communities in the lower Stour Valley and adjacent areas including Brantham, Capel St Mary, Dedham, East Bergholt, Holbrook, Lawford, Manningtree, Raydon, & Stratford St Mary. Suffolk Rockets Netball Club As we finish our first part of the season we reflect on all the amazing achievements and improvements each player has made in 2018. All our Adult and Junior players have given 110% at every training session and match, we thank everyone for being a part of our thriving club and we cannot wait to see what 2019 brings! Our Junior teams are doing really well in the Colchester Youth League, they go into the new year in the following positions: Celestial Rockets 4th (out of 7); Cosmic Rockets 4th and Apollo Rockets 3rd (out of 7); Saturn Rockets 3rd (out of 9); Galaxy Rockets 7th (out of 11). Our Adult teams, Suffolk Solar and Suffolk Stars finish the year in 4th and 10th place. 2019 is going to open new doors at Suffolk Rockets as we introduce 'Walking Netball', Walking Netball is a slower version of the game; it is netball, but at a walking pace. The game has been designed so that anyone can play it regardless of age or fitness level. From those who have dropped out of the sport they love due to serious injury, to those who believed they had hung up their netball trainers many years ago, it really is for everyone (male/female/16years - 99years!). Come join us on the 26th January 9am 10.30am at Hadleigh High Leisure Centre indoor court, £5per session including cake, we will be running the sessions every two weeks (further information on our website). We are looking for a sponsor for our Walking Netball Club, sponsor would enable us to reach out to more people and to offer them more opportunities to get fit, socialise and to participate in the community, if you would like more information please contact us. Women Together Recovery Group Women Together Recovery Group (WT) meetings are self help recovery groups for all women regardless of their addiction or life problem. They are facilitated by women who are in recovery themselves and people who have supported others in their journey to freedom. We provide an environment where women can talk about their daily struggles, share their experiences, strength and hope openly and honestly in a safe place. They can be with others who share a common desire to overcome addictive behaviour. It’s somewhere women can seek healing for one another. WT wants women to regain the self confidence, self belief and self worth that addiction has stolen from them. This has made us the team to beat and we have found that other clubs are raising their game as a result. In recent weeks the young squad has been seriously tested by Colchester and Sudbury. While the Rams have found try scoring more challenging, their defence from 1 to 18 has been particularly pugnacious. These challenges will stand Hadleigh in good stead in the new year when the push for promotion begins in earnest. The structure of the Eastern Counties leagues dictate that we will be playing arguably better teams from further afield. The spirit and confidence that currently defines Hadleigh Rugby Club makes the challenge more exciting than daunting. We are in the process of organising some Second Team games for 2019. New or returning players will therefore have the opportunity initially to train and play in a less pressured environment. Senior training nights are Tuesday and Thursday from 7.30pm. The Workers Educational Association There has been a branch of the W.E.A in Hadleigh for over 60 years. The National Association has been in existence for over 100 years. Originally founded to promote ongoing education for adults who would otherwise be excluded, it provided an access route to higher education for those who aspired to it. These days the branch programme mostly delivers cultural education. The students are usually retired but W.E.A. programmes are open to anyone over the age of 19 years. Other strands of the W.E.A. involve ‘targeted provision’ aimed at specific groups, for example asylum seekers and refugees. The spring course for 2019 starts on 30th January in the social room at the Leisure centre. We meet for 7 sessions of 2 hours, Wednesday afternoons starting at 2.00pm. The course is entitled ‘Impressionism and beyond in portraiture’ the tutor is Mike Baldry who has taught art history for the W.E.A. for many years. Sadly this is the last 7 week course of its kind to take place in Hadleigh. As with many other organisations it is difficult to find volunteers to provide the necessary committee. All That Jazz! - The Jazz Century Cakewalk to Culture by Dr Graham Platts Stoke-by-Nayland WEA presents a series of 10 weekly lectures starting on Thursday 17th January 2019 in Stoke-by-Nayland Village Hall at 7.30 pm. A decade by decade jazz journey, from 1900 to the 1990s (and beyond), with guided commentary/discussion and numerous musical examples. From the dance halls and sporting houses of New Orleans to Carnegie Hall and the greatest concert stages around the world, jazz has travelled far both geographically and culturally. America's greatest indigenous musical form, soon to become a world music category, prompts us to ask about the men and women behind its development and what they contributed. What would jazz become by the end of the twentieth century? This course celebrates some of the many pioneers who have kept us dancing and enriched our lives While Graham was growing up in the 1950s he discovered the infectious drive and fun of early jazz and learned about the Swing era of the ‘thirties from his father who was an enthusiastic and skilful amateur jazz pianist. The greater complexities of jazz after WW2 took a little longer to grasp, so we shall be embarking together on a voyage of further discovery as the course progresses!
