Suffolk’s Most Active Community Awards
Hintlesham and Chattisham, Clare and Brantham have scooped the honours in this year’s Suffolk’s Most Active Community Awards. The awards, now in their fifth year, are organised by Suffolk County Council and Suffolk Association of Local Councils. Their purpose is to recognise and celebrate communities in Suffolk that are going the extra mile to encourage their residents to be active. Cllr James Reeder, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for health, said “Without doubt, town and parish councils are a major provider of physical activity facilities and opportunities. Whether providing playgrounds, sports halls, open space, football pitches, allotments, walking routes, fitness classes or special events, the scope and variety of provision is large and varied.” Hintlesham and Chattisham, which has a population of just 778 people, triumphed in the small village category, for villages of less than 1,000 people. The judges were particularly impressed with their achievement in raising £117,000 to provide an all-weather floodlit Multi-Use Games Area giving residents free access to tennis, hockey, five-side football and netball. Cllr David Marsh from Hintlesham and Chattisham Parish Council commented “I'm pleased and very proud to receive the award on behalf of the village. It demonstrates that a wide range of activities not only leads to improved wellbeing but assists inclusivity too.” Sally Longmate, Chief Executive of Suffolk Association of Local Council’s, added “I would like to congratulate this year’s winners. They demonstrate wonderfully the huge contribution that town and parish councils make to the health, wellbeing and quality of life of communities across the length and breadth of Suffolk.”

PRINTING On Sunday November 11th, the whole nation commemorated the centenary of the end of the First World War, and the day in Burstall went as follows:10.30 am Remembrance Day Service. Burstall Church, beautifully decorated with poppies, was completely full, including relatives of Burstall men who had been killed in the conflict. The 2 minute silence was observed at 11.00, followed by the playing of the Last Post, and a visit to the war graves in the churchyard; 12.00 noon - Buffet Lunch in the Village Hall; 6.50 pm - Tribute to the Millions, read by the Chairman of Burstall Parish Council; 6.55 pm - Last Post; 7.00 pm - Lighting of the Beacon 7.05 pm - Church Bells - 'Ringing out for peace' 7.15 pm - Back to the Village Hall for light refreshments and performance of appropriate songs by the wonderful Pop Chorus, a great way to round off what was a truly memorable day. Grateful thanks are due to:- The weather for being kind to us; So many members of the village who worked really hard to make this such a great day; Everyone who supported the day so wonderfully, and donated generously to the officially chosen charities for the Armed Services. Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 29 (Winter 2018) First of all, thank you for purchasing copies of Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 28, a special issue to commemorate the fallen of Bildeston and Wattisham during the Great War and to raise funds for the British Legion Poppy Appeal. When all monies are collected in, I will let you know how much I will be sending on your behalf. In the current issue is the story of two generations of the Gibbs family, who ran the grocery and drapery business for the last half of the 19th century on the site now addressed as No. 108 High Street. The characters behind the counter are followed through other interests, for example: as temperance reformer and census enumerator as week as keen members of Bildeston and District Horticultural Society. Part 2 of ‘The story of Manor Road’ takes the ownership and occupancy of Birds Farm from 1837 – 1963, when Gordon and Yvonne Taylor began to plan construction of a cul-de-sac of bungalows. Between these two dates, title deeds and leases give detail to farming practises and the demise of a windmill on the site. At the turn of the 20th century, the name was changed to Newberry Farm and the architectural history of the farm house, now No. 22 High Street, is followed from its origins in the 16th century. In 1791, three sets of twins were born in three successive Mondays, each pair being a male and female child. ‘An unusual series of births’ traces the early lives of these children through entries in the parish registers. One set of twins were born to John Hobart, the village schoolmaster, and his wife Elizabeth. Their time here does not seem to be out of the ordinary except for a notice that John placed in local newspapers concerning Elizabeth. Bildeston came under the jurisdiction of Hadleigh Petty Sessions and five cases that appeared there are featured include ‘furious driving’. Nothing has changed! Over the weekend of December 1st/2nd and in conjunction with the National Trusts 'Victorian Christmas' program, the RSPB will be running some seasonal family activities and volunteer crafts to bring seasonal cheer and celebrate all things natural this Christmas! Activities such as toasting marshmallows over an open brazier, and a volunteer run cake and craft stall including some simple decorations for sale are proposed. As last year, we will have a Green Mother Christmas to thrill the children who will have an opportunity to make festive bird feeders whilst you warm yourself with home made hot chocolate courtesy of our splendid volunteers. New this year will be a Pledge Tree, a festive garden trail for old and young alike to explore, and our small retail shop selling RSPB Christmas themed items. We hope this event will serve as a good introduction to the sort of activities we offer and might inspire you to join as a volunteer! The Garden will be open each day between 10:30am and 3:30pm and entry is free, but there will be a nominal charge of ÂŁ1.00 per child to help cover costs and enable us to continue our vital work to Give Nature a Home. Parking is in the National Trust car park at Flatford, East Bergholt for ÂŁ4.00 a day. Capel Ladies Club December Report A group of members spent an enjoyable evening in October at M&Co in Hadleigh Co-op, choosing and trying on various outfits from the large selection available. Refreshments and nibbles were served by the staff, and a number of purchases were made! On the journey home the ladies stopped at the George, Hintlesham, for a drink and a chat. A very enjoyable evening! In November we were entertained by Barbara Faulkner, a regular speaker, who told us the full history of the Gunpowder plot. She came dressed in black, with lacey collar and cuffs, in the Stuart fashion, and an appropriate Guy Fawkes hat. We heard from her the background story of how Guy, serving as a Catholic mercenary fighting in Spain, was called back to England to join the plotters in blowing up James I and Parliament because of his skills in the use of gunpowder. The rest is history, and after her talk we all reminisced about Bonfire Nights when we were children! It was an interesting and jolly evening. Chelsworth Christmas Fair On Saturday 1st December Chelsworth will once again be holding a Christmas Fair in All Saint’s Church. The beautiful medieval church will be full of Christmas atmosphere, with stalls selling gifts, crafts and foodstuffs. There will also be second-hand books, bric-a-brac and a bottle tombola. Seasonal refreshments in the shape of mince pies and mulled wine will be served all day and hot soup will be available at lunch time. You will also be able to buy raffle tickets for a chance to win one of the famous Chelsworth Christmas Hampers. Musical entertainment will be provided by Hadleigh Community Choir. Chelsworth is a pretty village situated alongside the river Brett, on the B1115, between Bildeston and Monks Eleigh. Our very welcoming village pub, The Peacock Inn, is nearby for those seeking a more substantial lunch. So why not kick off your festive season with a visit to Chelsworth? We’ll be delighted to see you. Entry to the Fair is £3 (children free) and there will be plenty of free parking a short walk from the Church.

Bildeston’s village community hall, Chamberlin Hall, provides spacious modern facilities at a very reasonable cost. The hall caters for various events and functions of all sizes. The main hall can hold up to 180 persons, and incorporates a fully licensed bar. Hirers may use the kitchen facilities to cater for themselves or we can recommend high quality local caterers. Meanwhile, two smaller rooms are perfect for those who are holding smaller functions or classes. Plenty of free onsite parking is also available. We have a number of daytime slots available if you are interested in setting up some classes or clubs for the local community. You can hire the large main hall for a four-hour slot in the morning or afternoon for £50 or the smaller meeting rooms for £40 and £25 respectively. “Come on, let’s be havin’ you!” says charity director to county’s photographers The director of the county’s leading heritage charity has put a call out for more entries to its second photographic competition, aimed at capturing beautiful examples of modern architecture. The Suffolk Preservation Society teamed up with Suffolk Design Review Panel, which was set up to encourage high levels of design in new developments, and launched the second Suffolk Beauty photographic competition in the middle of the summer. The brief is for photographs of a single or group of modern buildings which entrants really like and which exhibit good design. ‘Modern’ is being defined as meaning anything built after 1945. These can be located within Suffolk or beyond its boundaries. The brief allows photographers to include modern buildings in situ – ie those which have been successfully blended into their wider landscape or just a detail on a single building that exhibits a high level of design and craftsmanship. The first Suffolk Beauty competition in 2016/7 received well over one hundred high quality entries, mostly pictures of the county’s outstandingly beautiful natural landscapes. According to the Society’s director, Fiona Cairns: “We knew that the second competition was going to be a far tougher assignment, but there’s a strategic reason behind this. “We decided to focus on modern beauty because Suffolk is facing unprecedented levels of new housing in coming years and we are looking for images that reflect fresh and exciting architecture that people are happy to live with and that Suffolk is, or would be, proud of.” “We’ve had some early entries, but now is the time for the county’s many amateur photographers to start sending in their submissions by the dozens. In the words of Delia Smith from across the border, ‘come on, let’s be havin’ you!’” The deadline for submissions is 28 February 2019. A panel will then select a short-list with the winners due to be announced in spring 2019. Prizes will be awarded, with details of these to follow soon. Stour Valley Men’s Probus Club Recent Meetings Recently we were privileged to have Sally Chicken introduce “The Regeneration of Shotley Pier”. Sally is one of a committee focused upon bringing back to life Suffolk’s only railway pier that is in a bad state and unfortunately were recently refused planning permission for their plans. Peter James talked about “The Great Essex Earthquake” and later in the month Jo Harrison’s talked about “Going Underground”. All meetings were much enjoyed by Members. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk As attention turns to Christmas – and a welcome escape from Westminster drama – it falls on me to make my annual festive appeal. It’s very simple: please support our local shops, pubs, restaurants, kiosks, markets, social events and village halls. For all the gloom around the future of the high street, we have some fantastic outlets in South Suffolk to buy gifts or enjoy a few hours of pleasant socialising. I hope that all readers take full advantage. Of course, some may say – so what are you doing about it and what action is the Government taking? Personally, I always try to support my local farm shop, particularly with an order for a locally reared turkey, and if we eat out it’s usually at one of the excellent pubs in the constituency where the standard of dining continues to go from strength to strength. It is unrealistic to expect everyone to do all of their Christmas shopping in local family owned stores, and I imagine most people reading this article will do a fair chunk of their shopping online and at supermarkets, as well as in smaller shops. But we can all ‘do our bit’, and I am included in that. As for the Government, we should be clear that there is no easy answer to the structural challenges facing businesses that sell via conventional retail premises. The rise of internet shopping has been blistering, and has brought many economic advantages, driving down prices in a range of retail channels. But, as the headlines of well-known chains struggling to adapt have underscored, these are challenging times. Thus, for me, a priority has been a fairer tax system, so that shops and family firms pay lower business rates, and - without hitting internet start-ups - megawealthy web firms contribute more. I therefore warmly welcomed the Budget’s twin track approach: cutting business rates for small business rates by up to a third; introducing a new tax on ‘tech giants’. However and wherever you spend this festive break, my I take this opportunity to wish you and your family the very best for Christmas and the new year.
Hadleigh Walkers For our November walk we had 18 join us for a leisurely 6 miles to the North of Stratford St Mary. By good fortune we managed to pick the one fine day between two foul ones – all part of the service! Our December walk on Saturday 8th will be a slightly longer one of approximately 9.5 miles starting at Ipswich and making our way back to Hadleigh via Hintlesham (where those wanting a shorter walk of circa 6 miles can catch a bus back to Hadleigh from outside the George). Our plan is to catch the 91 bus towards Ipswich Co-op side at 0925 and alight at the entrance to Chantry Park. We will then proceed to Sproughton, follow the East bank of the River Gipping to Bramford, then Runcton Farm, Thornbush Hall, Grindle Farm, Burstall Hall, Walnut Farm, Burstal, Mill Farm, Hintlesham Park, Ram’s Farm, Cobbold Farm and into Hadleigh via Durrants Farm. Those electing for the shorter walk will leave us at Home Wood and walk the short distance into Hintlesham to catch a Hadleigh bound bus at 1303 or 1433. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy or rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. Looking further out, in January we will do our usual New Year walk starting in Hadleigh and ending up at the George. More detail later. If anyone has a favourite part of the local area to visit please give us your suggestions and we’ll do our best to create a walk. We’re always open to new ideas. Seasons Greetings from Hadleigh Osteopaths The Hadleigh Osteopaths clinic is at Hadleigh Pool and leisure, Stonehouse Road. We will re-open Thursday 3rd January 2019. This is often a very busy time for everybody. Mums and dads are trying to squeeze Christmas shopping in around work; kids are busy with concerts and plays, and everybody wants the house to be ready for guests to come and stay. The last thing that anybody wants is a bad back or a sore neck to ruin the fun, or get in the way of being ready for the holidays. We often get a frantic phone call from patients before we are due to close for the Christmas break saying that ‘their back has just gone” or “they really need to be seen before Christmas” just as our staff are packing up to go home to their own families. Sometimes this is just the result of the person struggling to get all their tasks done before the world stops on Christmas Eve, but often the case history reveals someone who has had niggles for a while, and just left it to the last minute to come and get it sorted out. Don’t let this be you! If you are aware that you have a back ache or a stiff neck, come and get it looked at now. No one wants to be the miserable person at the Christmas lunch table, or the person unable to join in the fun and games because they can’t get dressed or get down to the presents under the tree. Life at The Shelley Centre The race was cancelled! Not round the arena here at Shelley of course, but in Nayland Village Hall. Everyone was too busy on that Armistice weekend to be able to attend, so the wonderful fund raising committee had to pull the plug on the event. Its a blow, but I think we’ll survive, the ponies still look well fed from what I can see. We have been able to welcome more volunteers to the team of helpers who commit to a session a week. Its nice to see the newbies getting the hang of the job and being so much appreciated by our clients (and especially their carers.) No two sessions are the same as our riders have to be matched to the available ponies, the standard of the other participants in each ride, their own personal time tables, and the number of volunteers present at any given time. I myself take two volunteers to look after me, and my riders, as the picture of Matthew ‘in the saddle’ shows. We are all looking forward to our carol service in Shelley church on December 8th. With the yard full of riders and their families and all the wearing tinsel in their head collars it’s a very festive atmosphere before the procession sets off down the candle-lit lane to the church. Squidgey and Camilla are the lucky ones who lead the walk, I wonder whether there is room for them in the church at all? It can’t have been Shetlands who witnessed the birth of Christ in that stable long ago; donkeys more likely and pigeons. We are having a bit of a battle with the latter, and their friends the partridges, all of whom like to roost above the office door and do what birds will do all over the ground: something else to sweep up. We are about to take time off for the Christmas holidays so I shall have my door locked with Babs for my only company. Outside people will come and go of course, the live herd still needs to be exercised and fed. As a Community Interest Company, Orchard Barn has an important role to help the community to learn traditional and environmentally sound approaches to living and construction. We recently hosted a group of children who act as carers for a disabled parent or other relative. The children, aged 6 to 11 spent an enjoyable half-day practising sawing skills such as making monster medallions from coppiced hazel and sculpting Halloween faces from daub. The day was rounded off by roasting marshmallows on the bonfire that they had built. The children had a wonderful time and we were delighted to have them at Orchard Barn. During October we also ran courses in spoon carving and natural building, and are currently putting dates together for new courses in 2019. On Wednesdays we carry out site maintenance and are grateful to the volunteers who help us with this task. We recently improved access to the disabled toilet by installing a solid oak floor. The oak came from an ancient wood where we provide labour in return for the timber that we need for our projects. Advance invite. On Saturday 2nd February between 3.30-5.00pm we will be holding a Wassail to toast the good health of the old orchard trees. Come and join us in this ancient custom. Past Meetings Our November 14th meeting featured Davis Simmonds, a National Trust speaker and volunteer, introducing “The Coast Of East Anglia”. The East Anglian coast is full of contrasts and has much beauty, history and wildlife. His presentation focused on National Trust coastal properties in Essex & Suffolk. Future Meetings & Diary Dates We do not have a speaker meeting in December but hold our popular Christmas lunch this time at the Best Western Hotel, Copdock on Wednesday 5 December. This is always a very popular event and so early booking is advised. Sally Dearman will speak to us on Wednesday 9 January on “Woman Can Fly”. This is the story of one women’s journey from jumping out of a landing window, then out of planes, to becoming a civil pilot, then the first women through the RAF’s fast-jet flying trains system. NEW - each month the Coffee Grinders will meet at The Lambe School, Gaston Street, East Bergholt, CO7 6SD from 10-12 noon. This meeting especially welcomes new members but gives all members the opportunity of meeting the activity Group Leaders and the Committee whilst enjoying a cup of coffee. The next meeting is on Friday 28 December. Membership Our main purpose is to encourage lifelong learning for those who are no longer in full time employment and emphasis is always placed on making learning active and fun as well as helping in developing friendships. We have a wide range of groups including language study, country walking, computer studies and gardens, churches and historic buildings visits. In the main, membership is drawn from communities in the lower Stour Valley and adjacent areas including Brantham, Capel St Mary, Dedham, East Bergholt, Holbrook, Lawford, Manningtree, Raydon, & Stratford St Mary. We are affiliated to the ThirdAge Trust, have over 370 members and 35 active groups. In 2015, with the invaluable assistance of our MP, James Cartlidge, I managed to arrange for a new sign at junction 31 on the A12, showing Hadleigh as the main destination rather than East Bergholt. The matter took a great deal of persistence with Highways England, so we were delighted when it happened. But last year, you may have noticed that visitors started missing the junction for Hadleigh again: the new sign had disappeared and the original sign returned. Well, I pursued Highways England and, at first, they were at a loss to explain the change. However, through detective work on their part, it transpired that the Hadleigh sign had been destroyed in an accident and for an unknown reason the original sign erected. Highways England agreed to restore the Hadleigh exit sign and while they were doing this, Highways England also looked into all the signs for the Hadleigh exits, in both direction, so all are now, hopefully, correct and in place. Over £1,000 of prizes up for grabs in local Christmas Prize Draw One local family run hearing care company has announced details of a charity Christmas Prize Draw, giving the local community the chance to win one of twelve prizes with a combined value of over £1,000. The Hearing Care Centre, which has 26 centres across Suffolk and Norfolk including one at Health By Design, Hadleigh, is holding its annual Christmas Draw in aid of deafness charity, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, with the winners being declared on Wednesday 19th December 2018. The charity delivers expert training for Hearing Dogs which provides invaluable emotional support to their deaf recipient. New found owners gain confidence, independence and companionship. This year to celebrate their 20th anniversary, The Hearing Care Centre have pledged to raise £20,000 for the charity, with many fundraising initiatives having taken place this year, including quiz nights, a pudding club and a huge drive to collect 20 pence pieces. The prize draw has received generous support from local businesses including Fred Olsen Travel, Theatre Royal Norwich, Archant and Coes Department Stores. Bury comes to Bildeston – Six chefs cook to raise £10,000 for local Hospice Five chefs from Bury St Edmunds joined Chris Lee in his kitchen at The Bildeston Crown recently to cook a fivecourse dinner with canapes and petits fours, and raise an incredible £10,000 (ten thousand pounds) for St Nicholas Hospice Care. The six chefs were: Chris Lee - The Bildeston Crown; Greig Young - The Northgate; James Carn currently working at All Saints, Fornham as well as various pop-ups across Suffolk; Justin Sharp - Pea Porridge, Pascal Canevet - Maison Bleue; Zack Deakins - 1921 Angel Hill Over fifty diners paid £90.00 per head for the dinner and matched wines selected and described by Ed Keith at Hallgarten Wines. As they ate, diners generously purchased raffle tickets to win prizes donated by each chef. A surprise addition to the evening was a number of other treats offered by those who had heard about the event which led to chef Chris Lee turning auctioneer to whip up bids on seven prize lots. There were stay packages from Tuddenham Mill and Fawsley Hall; a golf match with four of the chefs at Hintlesham Hall; a clay pigeon shoot at The Lindsey Rose; a dinner party at home cooked by Chris Lee; two tickets for high speed ride in a Porsche at a Grand Prix race circuit and an unbelievable opportunity to fly in a spitfire from Duxford donated by TMJ interiors. Still in his chef’s whites and clearly running on adrenaline, Chris worked on his audience and the bids came pouring in. It was Chris’s idea to hold this event, primarily to highlight in one great dinner the best chefs, restaurants and food producers of West Suffolk but also as he explains: “I count all these chefs as good friends and thought it would be a great opportunity to get together; we don’t do it enough. The fact that in having fun cooking together we can also raise some much-needed funds for the local hospice – well that is even better.” Shona Doig, community administrator for the Hospice, who attended the event, explained “The Hospice needs to raise up to £11,000 a day from community fundraising events such as this, to continue supporting people living with long-term and life-limiting illnesses in West Suffolk and Thetford area.” Emma Clements, major events fund-raiser for the Hospice, who visited Bildeston to formally receive the cheque, also stressed the need for community support: “A big thank you to all six chefs and their teams for giving up their Monday night off to raise such a phenomenal amount. We are so proud that West Suffolk has such talented chefs and are immensely grateful for their continued support.”

Monday November 12th 2018: If you are starting a garden from scratch or want to redesign your existing plot then Green Island Gardens, Ardleigh is the place to go. Fiona Edmond, who owns the garden also runs courses on garden design and she came to speak to the club last month. Although her talk was only an hour in length there were plenty of ideas about 'right' and 'wrong' design and lots of illustrations to show theory in practice. The most important thing is to have a plan from the start and 'less is more' seems to be the way to success. Limit your choice of plants, use a maximum of three different types of hard landscaping materials and divide the garden, however small, into different areas, seating, planting etc. If your garden is very small then doing without a lawn altogether seems to be the best bet as it will make the garden look bigger and reduce the need for maintenance. If only I had known all this nine years ago when I took on my present garden! Now, where did I put that spade............? East Anglian Garden Group Our last lecture of 2018 was given by Rasvan Chizu, and his subject Transylvian Alpine Plants was enjoyed by all. He grew up in the mountains amidst stunning scenery, beautiful wooden churches, and famous castles, and his knowledge of the flora of the region was unbounded. He will be taking groups of people from the Alpine Garden Society on a visit next June. Check their website for details, he will be a most enthusiastic guide! We were treated to a photographic tour of this amazing country, with its wealth of wild flowers, which carpet the mountains from spring onwards. How lucky they are not to have suffered the ravages of intensive farming, which has denuded our verges and field margins of so many of our wild flowers. Tickets for our Celebrity Speaker, James Alexander-Sinclair,( garden and landscape designer, writer, television presenter and RHS Council member) on February 16th, are now on sale, ÂŁ10 for members, ÂŁ15 for non members, and ÂŁ2.50 from each ticket will be donated to the Greenfingers Charity, who build gardens for childrens hospices. His subject will be ‘ Dancing Through Borders’, the stories and plants behind some of his favourite gardens. Down to Earth ...with Dave As I write this the wonderful weather is continuing, the early morning mist and dampness has been dried off by some lovely sunshine. It is a pleasure to be out and about and getting on with a final tidy up. The autumn fruiting raspberries have been cut right back to ground level, as have the yellow asparagus fronds, a good covering of well rotted compost will be applied as soon as possible. As we have had a fair bit of rain lately it is best not to tread on the ground more than is really needed. Not a problem on the allotment as one of the projects this year was to salvage lots of old concrete slabs and lay several paths going right across the allotment. Hard work but well worth the effort as it is now possible to work from these paths and not tread on the soil. It seems to be a tradition with allotment holders that virtually anything can be reused, we even have somebody who regularly leaves out bags of sweepings from their aviary floor for use as compost. Whilst it is a bit strong and does smell a bit, it is fine when mixed with other materials on the compost. A rather novel first is that someone has put up a notice on the allotment that they have quantities if alpaca poo for disposal. It will be interesting to see a sample of this, I imagine it will be a bit like sheep droppings, as I said not much goes to waste. It is a good idea to reduce the height of any buddleia bushes now in order to stop any possible wind damage, the final heavy pruning should be left till the spring. If you have an outside tap it will pay to lag it against frost. You can buy a proper kit or make up your own using pipe lagging or even layers of bubble wrap. Also put any lances away in the shed as they will be ruined by freezing temperatures. The robin with its bright red breast is very evident in our gardens at this time of year. The adult male does not move far from its local breeding ground but the females may well cross the channel to spend the winter in warmer climes, as far as spain and Portugal. Both males and females sing all year round to defend their territory and their songs are identical. Around Christmas time robins begin to explore other robins' territories in the hope of finding a mate. Most will have paired up by mid January and the females will stop their territorial singing. The males will continue to sing to declare ownership of their joint breeding ground and they may well fight to the death to defend this territory, as much as 10% of adult mortality is caused by this. Sometimes robins will sing long into the night, especially where there are street lights, they often start at dawn and are one of last to stop in the evening. That's all for now, Dave

Pause For Thought Occasionally, for some people, when they start to get out of bed in the morning, they have to ask themselves, “What day is it?” and it isn't only those who were born in the last century! It can be more difficult to work out for those who live on their own. Although, we are surrounded by the world that God created a long time ago and there are changes in weather conditions, during the year, as the season's change which helps us have an idea what time of year it is, sometimes, sitting there, as we recover from a night's sleep it could be April or even November. I marvel at the colours around me, different shades of colour each season. When the ‘what day is it struggle’ happens to me, I turn the radio on to find out what day it is. But even then, we still have to work out how we are going to spend the 1,440 minutes we have available to us each day. God's Word, the Bible, gives a lot of advice about how to spend our days. When we put our trust in God, we can be sure of meeting Him on one future day. His son, Jesus took the punishment, for our disobedience, by being crucified. We have broken the laws, that God set out for us, but Jesus paid the price with His death. Jean Chisholm
visitingfootpractitioners Kersey Mill Newsletter Gosh its Christmas time again! Santa’s workshop is up and running with record numbers of tickets being sold. We added further sessions this year but again demand will outstrip supply. For last minute tickets do please call. All proceeds go to the restoration fund and we thank everyone who helps with the event and supports it by attending. It has been a very good year for the mill all round with approximately 8000 visitors to the mill alone, all interested in the restoration project that is ongoing. The Hurst Frame is now complete and our attentions and efforts in the new year will focus on the reinstatement of the runner stones and the stone furniture. The millstones are surrounded by a wooden or in some instances a metal case. The three water driven stones at Kersey Mill will each have a wooden case or tun also known as a vat, it is like a barrel. Its purpose is to collect the flour that has been ground between the stones and ensure it is directed out of the stones and down the spout to the waiting sack below. On top of the case sits the hopper legs (horse) and hopper. Grain is fed from the hopper into the stones by the shoe. The flow of grain into the stones is regulated by how fast the shoe is shaken. If the stone furniture is not built correctly then the grain will not flow into the stones properly. If the slope of the shoe is too steep grain will flow too quickly, if the slope is too shallow grain will not flow at all. The shoe also needs to be the correct shape to keep the grain from falling out of the side and on top of the stones. The grain will not be ground and instead will end us as whole grain in the flour spoiling it. We anticipate these works commencing in January and should hopefully be completed during 2019. It was heart warming to see local children at an Age UK Suffolk day centre recently in the local press learning first hand of the loneliness and isolation of our ageing population in the region. 15,000 people over the age of 65 in Suffolk are reportedly feeling they have no one to turn to for help and support. Age UK estimate that 2.65m people over 65 face their problems alone. Whilst neighbours or friends can drop by for a chat and a cup of tea, it is more difficult to advise when issues concerning finances are raised. We all have a responsibility to the elderly, particularly our own Kay Baker family members. Whilst we cannot always be close by and often have to rely on neighbours and friends of our loved ones to help them on a daily basis, we should endeavour to check that they are keeping their finances in order. For example, with the demise of so many local banks and post offices, they may feel unable to access their pension easily or understand tax or benefit forms and calculations. Local community groups play a vital role and Age UK can help with benefit queries and entitlements as well as offer many other services. Whilst technology for many of us saves time and opens up more choice and instant opportunity, for the elderly it can create barriers to communication and deny opportunity to chat things through at a pace they are comfortable with. The Gotelee team can help when a family need to consider doing more than just a regular check to see if a loved one is managing OK in relation to their financial affairs. Peace of mind that a Will is up to date is of course one area, but families also speak to us about tax issues and retirement or nursing home funding. News from Kersey School Squirrels (Reception) In Squirrels class we have been looking at celebrations and festivals around the world including: Bonfire Night and Diwali. Between now and Christmas we shall also be looking at Hanukkah and Christmas and why different religions celebrate these. We are also doing a nativity with Hedgehogs at the end of term called 'A Miracle in Town'. Hedgehogs (Years 1 and 2) Hedgehogs class have been learning about our topic 'Fire' and so far we have looked at 'The Gunpowder Plot' and we have been writing some brilliant poems about fireworks in literacy. In science the children have been investigating different types of materials and whether something is 'man-made' or 'natural'. Badgers (Years 3 and 4) As part of our Crime and Punishment topic this half term we have been researching lots of different time periods. So far we've learnt about the Tudors, the Georgians and the Romans! We are very thankful that the punishments that existed then do not exist now! In ICT we have used the gruesome story of Guy Fawkes to make our own stop art animation videos. Some of us were lucky enough to get them loaded onto YouTube for all the world to see. As part of Anti-Bullying week we have been learning a rap to remind how to define bullying and also stop it happening. Owls (Years 5 and 6) Owls class have spent the last few weeks learning about WW1 and the Armistice treaty. They have researched the lives of the two soldiers buried in St Mary's church yard and presented this information to the congregation at our Remembrance service on 8th November. They thoroughly enjoyed finding out about these men and how they sacrificed their lives for their country. Many of the class have tales of tell of their own families who may have fought in the World Wars, which has brought home to them how significant Remembrance Day actually is. Owls class are now moving on to write their own war poems using images from different stories of war written for children. Photo Bryony Farrow The story of Hadleigh’s League season so far makes impressive reading: Played 9 Won 9; Points Scored 510 Points conceded 49. Recent games have seen the Rams defeat Ipswich 22 -3, Harwich 136 – 0 and Halstead Templars 60 – 28. It is not just the victories that have been so impressive, but the manner in which they have been achieved. The team has scored over 80 tries while conceding only 7. Visitors to our Layham Road ground have enjoyed some exhilarating rugby during the best start to a season for many years. Over the next few months, we intend to play some Second Team games as part of the club’s commitment to developing its’ player base at senior level. We welcome new or returning players. Cos Loizou, Chris Williams, Andy Dodds and Steve Hedges The Andy Platter, one of the most popular mid-week trophies for seniors at Newton Green Golf Club, attracted a record entry of 64. Once again 10handicapper Chris Williams came up trumps, winning the trophy for the fifth year running, and scoring a very credible 38 Stableford points in a competition played off three quarters handicap. Lower handicap players took the first three positions, with count-back putting Cos Loizou into second place, followed by Steve Hedges, both on 37 points. The platter was donated by Andy Dodds 17 years ago and he was present to present the trophy.
Captain Drive In at Stoke During the week commencing the 5th of November, all the sections at Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club held their AGMs and elected a new captain. This then culminated in the club AGM being held on the 9th in the evening when some of the prestigious trophies from each section were handed out to the winners. Early Saturday morning the new men’s captain, John Sandford, had breakfast for over 200 players in the Devora suite followed by “The Captain’s Drive-in”, a shotgun start better-ball competition on both courses. John and the other section new captains were watched by the club members as they drove down the first. Afterwards the players gathered in the Devora Suite again to hear the results of the competition and who guessed the length of the drives correctly in the sweep. Pictured are John and the new ladies captain, Diana Harris, on the first tee before being introduced to the crowd. The new seniors captain for the coming year is Ian Bickers and the new junior captain is Harry English. The winners of the 2 competitions were Richard Bland & Steve Wood on the Gainsborough course with a score of 45 stableford points, and Andy Adams & Trevor Brace with a score of 42 on the Constable course. On the Sunday, 25 pairs played in the “Captain / Pro Challenge” qualifying competition, on the Constable course, for the chance to play again the Captain and a professional during the coming year. With the top 10 qualifying, the bar was set quite high with only those scoring 39 points or more getting through. The competition was won by Eric Fisher and Shaun Underwood with 42 points. Despite all of the rain on Friday and Saturday evening, the golf days were both played in very good conditions. Hopefully a good omen for the coming year.

We have now finished our in-house competitions for this year and thank you to everyone who entered them this year. The finalists of the Single's competition was Daphne Clark, and Martin Wheal. Daphne is half of our 'newly wedded' couple, with them both having a good year, with Alan Clark (not Cook!) winning the triples and Daphne reaching the final of the Single competition. But Martin was the winner, regaining the title after 6 years. Well done Martin. We play our last session in 2018 on Tuesday 18 December, although we will not be playing on Tuesday 4 December, and we return on Tuesday 4 January 2019. We would welcome any new members to come and join us and try Carpet Bowls. We have a morning session on Tuesday mornings at 10am and an evening session on Thursday evening at 7.30pm, both are at Lavenham Village Hall. The first two sessions are free, to see if you would enjoy Carpet Bowls and tuition is available if you need it, but it is a fairly easy game to pick up. We also play friendly matches with other villages on some evenings so might be playing 'away' on some Thursday evenings so please check with us if you are planning to come on a Thursday.
