Charity Ball raises over £8000 for Dementia A Black Tie Charity Ball for nearly 200 guests, held in the beautiful setting of St Mary’s Church, has raised over £8000 for Dementia UK and the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance. Stuart Service and James Hellyer, who are running this year’s London Marathon in aid of Dementia UK, would like to say a massive thank you to all those who supported this fabulous and very enjoyable event. St Mary’s Church looked resplendent and, alongside fantastic food from Jamie Lee Smith Catering and our brilliant band, Turntable, a fabulous night was had by all! With around twelve stalls every week, the market really does offer an alternative to a Friday supermarket shop. Every week you’ll find a wonderful selection of fruit, fresh herbs, salad and vegetables as well as award winning bread and pastries from Wooster’s, fresh fish and seafood from Lowestoft, a huge selection of cheese and pies and homemade jams, chutneys and cordials. One of the very best things about this market is that it has given the community another place to meet where local people, young and old get together, to have a coffee, to sit in the sunshine and to chew the fat and, as the organiser of this market, this social gathering is one of the very best things about the weekly market. The Rosa Simon Music Fund In June 2014, our little daughter and sister, Rosa, was killed in a tragic accident as she scootered on the pavement just outside our house. The response of the people of Hadleigh and the surrounding villages was immense: compassion, empathy and support. A little after her death, with the help of so many others, we set up the Rosa Simon Music Fund. Its aim was to give local children the chance to have new opportunities to learn instruments, make music and to perform at a time when such opportunities were becoming harder to fund for most families. Through the efforts and immense kindness of hundreds of people, £21,100 was raised for the Fund. Aside from £1.43, all of that money has been spent on everything from tuition fees for those whose family circumstances made such outlays prohibitive, new musical instruments for local schools and the hosting of live performances involving hundreds of children and young people. We hope that the experiences gained with the assistance of Rosa’s Fund will be a source of pride and happy memories for everyone involved. But we think now is the time to bring the Fund to a close. A simple ‘thank you’ seems so inadequate a way of expressing our gratitude to the people of Hadleigh and the surrounding villages, but we hope you can see that it is heartfelt. We would like, though, to single out the trustees of Rosa’s Fund: Maggie Addison, Matthew Coombs, Nigel Crisp and Karen Harman for their immense dedication and skill in managing its affairs over the years. Collaboration – A better approach to separation Separating from a partner can be an extremely difficult time both emotionally and financially. In the past, the more traditional approach to Divorce has been for the parties to resolve their differences in the courtroom, but increasingly, with court delays, this process can often lead to increased stress and cost to both parties. The premise of dealing with separation ‘collaboratively’ is for the parties to agree to achieve a settlement through collaboration as opposed to making an application to the Family Court. In the collaborative process, each party instructs a specialist, collaboratively trained divorce lawyer and all negotiations and decision making takes place in a series of four way meetings attended by both parties and their divorce solicitors. Control is given back to the parties in the divorce to set their own timetable and agenda for these meetings rather than a timetable being imposed by the court. As the parties have a direct input into the agenda they will each be able to discuss issues most pressing to them. It is possible to bring in experts to the four way meetings, where required, such as Independent Financial Advisers to ensure that both parties have the correct assistance to help them make important decisions for the benefit of their family. There is far more flexibility in the Collaborative process than the more traditional court process and so it can often lead to a speedier resolution of issues and therefore reduced legal fees. If the parties have children it is essential that communication is maintained to enable the parents to be able to co-parent their children when they have completed the divorce process. One of the benefits of collaboration is being able to keep the children at the forefront of all discussions in the hope that the impact of the divorce on the children can be minimised. There is still the obligation on the both parties to provide full disclosure of their financial positions to enable the parties to be fully informed before making any decisions. However, the process of providing this information is more informal and less restrictive. Ultimately, the collaborative divorce process hopefully ends with an agreement being reached between the parties which they have both worked towards together rather than a decision being imposed upon them. Hadleigh Hero dog Bowza (A SESAW rescue dog) walked out the Ipswich Town FC Team in front of 25,000 people. All he wanted was the football the ref was carrying. A few days before, he was at the training ground at Playford Road, meeting all the players and manager Paul Lambert and then having a kick around. A few weeks before his ITFC walk out, Bowza was on the channel five TV programme “Do The Right Thing” with Eammon Holmes, Ruth Langsford and Esther Rantzen. He sang on stage and was awarded a trophy (Dog of the Year) from Eammon Holmes. Now it's back to playing in the fields with all of his friends.

Yet for those with hearing loss, some of these sounds go completely unheard. One local business is encouraging anyone experiencing hearing difficulties to ‘spring into action’ by attending a special event in Hadleigh. Just as our eyes slowly deteriorate as we age, making it difficult to read small print, our ears can gradually lose their ability to hear sound. It may surprise you to know that sounds as common as birds singing, pages turning and the crunch of gravel underfoot are sounds that those with hearing loss completely miss out on. Hearing loss can lead to isolation and frustration due to finding it difficult to follow conversations, over exhaustion after listening in challenging environments, and a greater risk of developing cognitive issues including dementia. Overall this leads to a reduced quality and experience of life. By taking action to monitor your hearing health you can make sure that you are experiencing life to the fullest. The Hearing Care Centre is a local, family-run hearing care company. Last year the business celebrated its 20th anniversary, during which time it has grown from having just one branch to offering an award-winning hearing care service from 26 centres across East Anglia. This includes Hadleigh, where audiologist Michael Shade holds a fortnightly clinic at Health By Design, a health centre based on Hadleigh’s High Street. Snooker Table for Sale The Porch Project have an 8ft slate bed snooker table, solid mahogany with turned legs, which we are looking to sell. It’s been maintained by Drinkwater’s and is in reasonable condition other than a torn cloth. It comes with a set of balls, triangle and dust cover. We are hoping to raise £400 from the sale but any reasonable offer will be considered. The reason for the sale is that we need to have more flexibility with our equipment in St Mary’s Church and although this is a lovely piece of furniture it cannot be easily moved. Our intention is to replace with a smaller portable pool table so whatever we raise from the sale will go towards this purchase. Leigh and I would like to say thank you to all the residents who have expressed good wishes for us ahead of the Babergh Council election. I am already the Green Party county councillor for the 18 villages in the Cosford area, and have been able to stand up for residents and provide an independent voice on many issues at the county council level. But so many local services and nearly all planning issues are decided by the Conservative-run Babergh District Council. So I have decided I want to represent our villages on the district council too. For that reason I am standing for the villages of Bildeston, Hitcham, Brettenham and four others nearby while Leigh, my fellow Green campaigner, is standing for the villages of Elmsett, Whatfield, Chelsworth, Kersey, Nedging, Semer, Lindsey and Aldham. When you vote please do consider these three things: • Only the Greens or Conservatives can win here in the villages mentioned above. I lost to the Conservative by six votes in 2011 in the Bildeston/Hitcham area. • The Greens, Robert and Leigh, work hard, year-in, year-out, for residents, keep them informed with newsletters and listen to their views on the doorstep. • Only the Greens, Robert and Leigh, can be an independent voice for residents: not told how to vote by their party. Babergh Council is run by the Conservatives. Electing another Conservative here is unlikely to change things on the Council. But sending Robert and Leigh as an independently minded alternative will. Having some alternative voices on the council to provide constructive views and hold the council to account is important for democracy. Diverse Summer Golf Day set to raise money for Hearing Dogs One local business has announced their inaugural charity golf day, which promises to be just as fun for complete beginners as it is for seasoned golfers. The Hearing Care Centre, which has a clinic locally at Health By Design, Hadleigh, will be holding the event on Wednesday 17th July 2019 at Seckford Golf Club, near Woodbridge. All proceeds from the event will go towards the company’s chosen charity Hearing Dogs For Deaf People. Beginning at around 1pm, golfers will enjoy 18 holes of golf across this stunning course, while those who are new to golf will receive three hours of tuition with a PGA golf professional. The two groups will re-join at the clubhouse to enjoy a freshly cooked BBQ dinner, and conclude with the official awards ceremony. There will also be some fantastic prizes which all attendees will have a chance of winning during the event. The Hearing Care Centre is an award winning family-run hearing care company which has 26 clinics across East Anglia. Last year the company raised ÂŁ20,000 for Hearing Dogs For Deaf People as part of its 20th birthday celebrations. Entry for the event is ÂŁ50 per person and includes the golf, BBQ, snacks and a donation to the charity. Golfers wishing to enter the tournament itself must enter in teams of 4 players. 180th Hadleigh Show Saturday 18th May 2019 Preparations for the 180th Hadleigh Show are well underway so put Saturday 18th May in your diary and join us for a great family day out at Holbecks Park. Joining us at the Show this year are Big Pete and The Grim Reaper – Monster Trucks who just love to crush cars! Weighing in at 7.5 tons Big Pete is one of Europe’s largest Monster Truck. Titan the Robot is also returning and will be touring the showground during the day. Other ringside entertainment includes The Sheep Show, The Dog & Duck Show and Dog Agility by TAG. With over 160 trade stands there is lots to see and do for all the family. The Cooking Demo will be back this year, led by Mark David of The Cooking Experience, and the Education team will be looking at Your Sunday Roast in the Schools Area. Travelling to the Show this year Over the last couple of years the issue of vehicles and pedestrians using Duke Street and the narrow Toppesfield Bridge together has become a concern. We have therefore taken the exciting decision to construct a brand new vehicular access running from Coram Street and coming in at the top of Holbecks Park. This new route will greatly improve the safety of pedestrians coming to the Show as Duke Street will be closed to all show vehicles and will become pedestrian only. What Do These Changes Mean? Duke Street, leading from the High Street to the Showground, will be closed between 6am and 6pm on the day of the Show, and all vehicles which previously used this road will be directed away from the High Street to the new entrance. • Vehicles coming from Colchester / East Bergholt or Ipswich directions will use the new track off Coram Street. • Vehicles coming from Sudbury or Lavenham direction will continue to use the Gravel Pit Lane as in previous years. • Please ensure you follow all road signs and instructions from traffic management staff and stewards to ensure your travel to the show is as smooth as possible.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk It is often said that these are ‘historic’ times in Parliament. However, most constituents would assume that word was referring to the passage of Brexit, with all its ups and downs. In fact, I would like to think that I recently participated in the passage of a Bill that could at least a little historic in terms of its future impact on social trends. I refer to the ‘Civil Partnerships’ legislation which I supported in its final stages last month, having also spoken at Second Reading (i.e. its very first debate). A Civil Partnership is a way for two people to show their commitment to one another, and to gain most of the rights reserved hitherto for marrying couples, without using the ‘traditional’ route offered by civil or religious marriage. However, at present, this form of union is only legally available to couples of the same sex. The purpose of the Civil Partnership legislation is to extend this right to heterosexual partners. When I first heard of this change my instinct was to question if this would be a ‘commitment lite’ way of conjoining. On reflection, and on hearing testimony from constituents and others who strongly support this option, I concluded that this would offer a new form of commitment to those who would otherwise probably make no such commitment at all. I should clarify that my wife and I chose to be married in church, using the traditional service, but it is a fact of life that millions of couples choose to live together without any formal binding of their relationship. In my view, far from ‘threatening’ marriage in church or even a registry office, for those who see marriage as outdated or too traditional (and I do not agree, but many feel that way) a Civil Partnership offers a way to bring greater stability to their lives – and those of any children they have. I also feel that this measure will become much more popular for generations to come. If that delivers greater stability and less family breakdown, that will be all to the good, and truly historic.

Past Meetings Toni Neobard & Kate Broad, family historians and authors presented “For Better or Far Worseâ€? on 13 March. This was a light-hearted look at marriage and relationships through the eyes of Victorians. What happened if they didn’t marry and what if you did but were not happy with your choice? It was a glimpse at bizarre goings-on showing wedded bliss wasn’t always so! On Wednesday 20 March our first Member's Quiz Night took place at in The Constable Hall. This event was much enjoyed by all present who thanked the organiser June Escott. Future Meetings & Diary Dates On 10 April the popular speaker Mark Mitchels will talk to us on “The Genius of Charles Dickensâ€?. Dickens rose to become a great novelist by sheer talent and determination. He worked a selfimposed schedule that never relaxed and in the end he probably brought about his early death. But the novels survive, to be rediscovered by each generation. What sort of man was he? His genius is astonishing and this talk uses biography and extracts from his books to re-create the man and his achievements. Our speaker on 8 May is Dr Helen Geake, National Finds Adviser, Portable Antiquities Scheme. She will talk about local finds recorded by PAS, archaeology found by the public. She will explain what to do if you find an historic artefact whilst gardening, beachcombing or walking the dog. This talk look at how archaeologists reconstruct items and will include details of local finds. Dr Stephen Ashworth, Senior Lecturer at UEA will talk on “Lies, Damned Lies & Statisticsâ€? on 12 June. How good are we at intuitively judging probabilities? Should everyone be able to earn more than the average wage? Is it a scandal that doctors/dentists/academics are below the national average? An excursion into statistics & probabilities, which is hoped, will encourage critical consideration of the statistics with which we are bombarded every day. Each month, the Coffee Grinders meet at The Lambe School, Gaston Street, East Bergholt, CO7 6SD from 10-12 noon. A very special visitor is coming along to our Spring Steam Gala on 6th and 7th April, all the way from the Severn Valley Railway in the West Midlands, Great Western Railway #813 locomotive (pictured) will be spending a few days in our company here in Essex at the East Anglian Railway Museum. Built in 1900, this plucky little tank engine worked the collieries in both South Wales and Northumberland before being purchased by the Severn Valley Railway and restoration commencing in 1968. Fully operational by 2000, GWR#813 has toured many heritage railways, delighting visitors along the way. She is the first GWR locomotive to visit us at the East Anglian Railway Museum and will be the star of our show on 6th and 7th April at the Spring Steam Gala alongside three members of our home fleet of locos so a great day of intensive steam action is in store! Squirrels (Reception) Squirrels have had a busy start to this half term learning all about Space. They have been finding out all about our solar system and what Tim Peake did while he was in Space. They enjoyed making planets and the solar system with their parents during science week. The children have all written lists of things they would take into space and have also written about what qualities they would need to have to be an astronaut. In maths they have been doing lots of practical activities focused around adding and subtracting. Hedgehogs (Years 1 and 2) In Hedgehogs class we have been looking at the two stories, 'Jack and the Beanstalk' and 'Jim and the Beanstalk'. We have been re writing our own versions of 'Jack and the Beanstalk', by changing the characters and some of the events that happen. On World Book Day we all worked hard to make a classroom display of 'Jack and the Beanstalk' where we made the beanstalk, clouds and the castle at the top! Badgers (Years 3 and 4) We have been having great fun in Badgers class this month. As part of World Book Day we read 'Alice in Wonderland'. During the week we created our own versions of the story, created Alice inspired water colours, drink me bottles, teapots, cakes and 3D playing card roses! The children and parents had a brilliant time. During our Science week we have conducted the experiment of making elephant toothpaste. After writing our own instructions we then used our stop art animation skills to make a video about how to make it. When we were at the village hall we had the task of bringing Tim Peake safely back to Earth. The children did a great job in making a capsule that worked. Owls (Years 5 and 6) Owls class have been busy since half term, taking part in BBC Radio 2's 500 words competition, as well as enjoying a great lead-up to World Book Day, reading The Pancake King and designing their own pancakes. They thoroughly enjoyed making them and decorating them too! The children have been focusing our learning around Science, in particular the topic of Earth and Space. They have found out about lunar rovers and heard the story of the Mars rover, Curiosity, which was launched back in 2011. As part of our English work linked to Science week, they have been writing our own CVs to 'apply' for a job at NASA; it has been fascinating to find out how many job possibilities there are other than an astronaut at NASA. Learning opportunities at Orchard Barn By the time you read this the roof of our new Craft Barn will be complete. At Orchard Barn we convert everything we do into learning opportunities. This unique building has been constructed by students and volunteers. They have learnt how to use 15-20 year old Elm poles for the rafters, plus coppice materials for the external cladding. Battens have been cleft from 10 year old coppice Ash and the 11,000 shingles from Sweet Chestnut. Elm typically gets to about 15 years old before succumbing to Dutch Elm Disease. We cut the Elm at the first signs of this disease and give the tree a second life as a rafter. At our AGM, Members raised a glass of elderflower fizz to toast the success of the new series of rural craft courses to be run in the Craft Barn, including the following:25 April – Earth and Tree natural building Source and use free building materials from the local environment. 27 April – Green Woodwork for gardeners Make a range of useful gardening products. 29 April to 1 May – Timber Frame Restoration Skills This course is led by three conservation experts helping you identify and repair problems in old buildings. 8 May – Make your own compost A FREE workshop showing you how to convert garden waste and kitchen peelings into rich plant food. On the 7th March 2019 there was a social meeting of some of the residents of Wallow Lane and Marshmoor Park. This was to mark the reduction of the speed limit at the junction of Wallow Lane and B1078 from 60 MPH to 40MPH. Residents here have been trying to obtain a speed reduction since 2002 when the residents of Marshmoor Park enlisted the help of Baroness Rosalind Scott of Needham Market. Unfortunately all efforts failed to obtain a speed reduction at that time and several attempts since that date. In 2015 yet another campaign was started involving local residents, Parish Councillors, District Councillors, County Councillors and even our MP Dr. Dan Poulter. After many meetings involving the Suffolk Highways Department, emails, letters and telephone calls it wasn't until 28th January 2019 that the new signs were approved and in place. After such a long time it was great for everyone to mark the occasion by having an afternoon tea celebration at Marshmoor Park. We had a special visitor, Julia Truelove who was one of the County Councillors at the start of this campaign. So a big congratulations to those who attended this event and helped during the campaign. Whatfield Players The Players have taken their final curtain call! This group, officially began in 1995, though they previously entertained and raised funds for local churches, youth groups, clubs and charities for nearly three years. 'Cinderella'... locally written, was the first of five Pantomimes, staged between Musical Shows, notably 'The Green Children'. Followed by Bless 'em All', The end of the Pier Show, The grand old Duke of York, It Must Be Love, Robinson Crusoe, ShowTime, ! and 2. Popular too, were themed music and drama evenings, Murder Mysteries, Three I Act dramas, and entertainment for Harvest Horkey nights, and Christmas fun for Whatfield and Bildeston. Throughout much of this time we had the support and guidance of Robert James and Mona Bruce, professional actors who lived in the village. We also owe thanks to the help we had from Hadleigh Community Choir, and the technical expertise of H.A.D.S. The decision to call it a day, was hard, but the full committee agreed that we had to accept the situation. Membership had not grown, and casting anything became a problem, rehearsal schedules hit difficulties, yet the workload remained the same. To cheer us all up..... All members past and present, are now invited to an evening of celebration, and memories. This will be held at Whatfield Village Hall, on Saturday 1st June, 7.30. Welcome to my news feed from the horses at The Shelley Centre. We are privileged to work here with so many interesting riders; the care we receive is first class (thanks to Lyn our stable manager) and we get to meet all sorts of humans. The live herd and myself and Babs enjoy meeting new volunteers and training them up into our ways. We also love the comfort and company of our long-standing helpers who come to understand us completely. So that we can feel relaxed and useful in our work Lyn organised a training day last month to remind our volunteers how we like to be handled, and how the Riding for the Disabled Association like its members to behave. ‘Health & Safety’, eat your heart out, we trot ahead of you here in this establishment. I like the cheerful colour of Charlie’s coat in my first photograph. He is chatting to our volunteer David whilst Bryn is being got ready for their lesson. How our riders do grow up! Charlie was just a small boy when he started coming to us, look at him now! Celebrating 30 years of our existence here at Shelley is quite something. I wondered what, as a blogger, I could throw in. Well, over the next few issues I shall get the folk here to tell me 30 reasons why they like coming to the Centre. Starting with two of MY riders (of course): No 1, Matthew “I like Ebony’s years.” Yeah, good man, Matthew, I like my ears too. No 2, Evie “ I like feeling my core muscles being used, and I really like knowing that when I’m sitting on Ebony (out of my wheelchair) I can still keep my balance”. Now for riders on Parys and Alfie: No 3, From Ross’s Mum “definitely the social side” and you can see this in my photo of Ross and Brittany on the sofa getting ready to ride. More comments in next month’s issue, I’ll keep my black ears listening out. Any Ipswich supporters here? Thanks for allowing some of our human team to collect donations outside the ground for your Reading match on March 2nd; we managed to collect £300 towards the cost of keeping us hale and hearty. Wish we could do the same for the Blue Army. I guess having a horse for your mascot is a good sign! 1940’s Vintage Revival event The Delphi Centre in Sudbury will be hosting a Vintage Revival day on Saturday 22nd June from 10:00am to 5:00pm to raise funds for "UPBEAT" Heart support charity and the Delphi Centre Refurbishment fund. Nic Carter Community Based Personal Trainer Spring is in the air! Daffodils are surfacing by the dozen and the dawn chorus is alive with sound. When you breathe in the air and soak up the sounds of nature this time of year, the benefits of being outdoors is instant. Which is why if you can take your fitness routine to the great outdoors – the benefits to your health and wellbeing increase tenfold. One of the greatest benefits of outdoor exercise lies in its inherent opportunity to connect with Mother Nature and in turn getting a free daily dose of vitamin D through sunlight. NHS guidelines state that the body creates Vitamin D from direct sunlight on the skin. So through the months of October to early March we struggle to get the amounts needed from the sun. A lack of vitamin D can lead to bone pain caused by a condition called osteomalacia. Vitamin D also helps to regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body – nutrients needed to keep bones teeth and muscles healthy. A study by Barton and Pretty (2010) stated that outdoor exercise provides a mental health boost beyond that of indoor gyms. They said that moving outdoors can reduce anger and depression and improve mood as well as improve self-esteem. Barton and Pretty (2010) also suggested that low- to moderate-intensity physical activity proved to have greater improvements in self-esteem than high-intensity outdoor exercise. Don’t let the prospect of outdoor activity scare you. If you’re new to exercise or just getting back into it, start with short exercise sessions and lighter intensity. Whether it’s completing a circuit workout at your local park, cycling to work, or walking your children to school and home. Any movement counts - all you have to do is get out and go! Monday 11th March 2019: AGM This year's AGM was very well attended which reflects the number of new members who have recently joined our happy band ! There were loads of winners for the raffle prizes, all the plants on the sales table were snapped up and congratulations go to Eve for winning the competition 'a bowl of crocus'. The members of the present committee were re-elected unanimously and will serve for another year. This past year we have had an acting chairman but I am pleased to say that he is now officially the chairman. We have had a lot to celebrate this year and this resulted in a very positive chairman's report. The coming season looks to be just as good with a programme of visits (see below), and speakers who will be covering a wide range of subjects from bees to willow weaving. As well as all that the club will also be involved in several community projects and events this year - so keep watching this space! Wednesday April 10th 2019: VISIT - Fuller's Mill Garden West Stow It's only April and we are already off on our second garden visit of the year! This time we are travelling to Fuller's Mill Garden near Bury St Edmunds, a riverside and woodland garden on the banks of the river Lark, created over the course of 50 years by Bernard Tickner MBE. The visit will be a car share and the cost of entry is £4.50, the garden is open from 2.00pm to 5.00pm. East Anglian Garden Group Over 100 members and guests enjoyed a highly entertaining and informative talk from our celebrity speaker for 2019, James Alexander-Sinclair. We really did ‘ Dance through the Borders’ with him, as he took us through gardens he had designed for various clients over many years. He told us how to focus on different areas of the garden, how to introduce focal points to lead the eye to points in the garden, and how to link those points to the landscape beyond. He showed us some of his original plans, how the plantings developed year after year from the initial planting, with seasonal photos, and encouragingly, when some failures happened, how they were rescued. Plants he particularly favours, and thinks should be in all gardens, were Rosa Mutabilis, for its simple flower forms and wonderful foliage; Lavender ‘Christiana’, a multi-headed bright blue variety, not hardy, but can be propagated by cuttings in the autumn; Rosa laevigata Cooperii, a vigorous climber, shiny evergreen foliage, with large single white flowers, it needs a hot wall to flower well, but once it is happy it is a sight to behold; white scented Sweet Rocket, to rampage through the borders at will, and finally Geranium Rozanne, for it’s bright blue colour. The plant he would banish forever from gardens is Forsythia! On March 2nd, our speaker was Stephen Barstow, also known as the ‘extreme salad man’ who gave a wonderful talk on his new book - Around the World in 80 Plants. He has a vegetable garden in Norway which takes two days to tour around, with over 2000 varieties of edible plants, and he is a leading expert in edible propagation. His buzzword is ‘edimentals’ which is his combination of edible perennials. We were all amazed at just how many of our perennial border plants are edible, all the Hostas, both leaves and flowers, the former cooked, and the latter in salads. Ligularia fischeri leaves can be used in stir fries and as wraps, all Mallows, ‘moschata’ and’ sylvestris’ being the most reliable, with the flowers, leaves and seed pods being used. The list was comprehensive, and we toured the world and its cuisine, with foraged plants. For anyone who would like further information on this fascinating subject, I would thoroughly recommend his book. Down to Earth ...with Dave This time last year we were recovering from the worst snow we had seen for many years, no snow this year but some biting winds that make working outside a bit unpleasant. After a weekend of very hard work the grass in the back garden has all gone and we now have a new expanse of gravel. So far there are over thirty pots of different shapes and sizes grouped on the fresh gravel, some are yet to show any sign of life emerging from them but others, like the tulips, have very attractive leaves showing. The entirely new look will take a bit of getting used to but it is nice to have the crunch of gravel underfoot rather than the wet muddy grass. The advantage of having a greenhouse is that jobs can continue even when the weather is rough. The various seeds sown last month have germinated, as soon as they have started to show then the bottom heat is turned off, ventilation is increased and the baby plants can eventually be moved to a different shelf in the greenhouse. This allows the heated trays to be used for further seed sowing such as sunflowers, any of the brassicas and further sowings of peas. So far we have peas, sweet peas, tomatoes, leeks, spring onions, cucumbers and some dahlias all growing well. In the past it has been advised that these small plants are only watered with tap water but with the amount of rain we have had lately I am using fresh rainwater on them, we shall just have to wait and see if it causes any damage. As soon as we get a dry spell the first early potatoes can be planted, provided they are earthed up well then any emerging shoots will be protected from a late frost. Talking of protecting it is surprising how much benefit can be gained from a polytunnel as used by many on the allotments. The crops grown survive the winter weather, giving a much earlier crop and are less affected by the various pests that can affect crops grown outside. Whether I will ever be the proud owner of one is doubtful, but I can admire others who have one. Buddleia and climbing roses should have had a prune by now and hydrangeas should be cut back to a juicy fat bud, any overcrowded or crossing branches can be cut out. Once the soil has warmed up a bit then seed like carrot, parsnip, chard and spinach can be grown directly into the soil. If you have any compost now is a good time to use it as a mulch as it will help to keep the moisture in the soil and enrich it. If you don't have a compost bin then why not start one? Dementia Action Week is coming up! May 18th - 25th sees our annual campaign to raise awareness of what can be done to support people living with dementia in Hadleigh. Most of us know that dementia can make life very difficult for people and for their family carers and one of the biggest worries is not knowing how people will respond if they meet in the shops or around the town. But most of us are unsure how best we can help and the week is an opportunity to find out more, to ask questions and to find out what you can do, whether as a business, voluntary or social group, or neighbour. Whatfield pupils were extremely excited to receive the new ‘Partnership of Bildeston and Whatfield CEVCP Schools’ minibus, which arrived last week. Our first journey was between schools for this photograph, but the plans are for the bus to be used by either school for the PE events and tournaments we take part in, as well as for forest schools and curriculum events. We have been able to purchase this new bus through careful budgeting of the schools’ PE premium and savings made across the partnership. We hope you will give us a wave if you see us around and about! Whatfield school has been represented by pupils at various events over this term, including at under 9’s and under 7’s multi-skills festivals held at Hadleigh High. It is really appreciated that the High School organise brilliant sporting events which are not only designed for the older pupils, but can also include younger competitors too. At Whatfield we have always included younger pupils in our teams, as on many occasions the school would not be able to provide a full squad due to small cohorts of pupils. I see this as a positive benefit to younger talented pupils, who get a chance to learn about playing in a team, what is expected at a tournament and being able to shine at something they enjoy! Pupils have also participated in enrichment activities, including an Able Writers’ Day at Chilton Community Primary School where they worked with one of the UK’s leading fiction and non-fiction writers, Robin Price. Within our pyramid of schools we often provide enrichment sessions for able pupils and Whatfield pupils have provided and enjoyed environmental studies, DT, reading and singing enrichment workshops alongside pupils from the locality. We celebrated World Book Day by dressing as our favourite characters from books. A huge thank you to all our very inventive and supportive parents who helped the pupils look amazingly like their chosen book characters! We had a whole range from Harry Potter to Pippi Longstocking and a smurf! We are excitedly awaiting the arrival of some ducklings, having invested in an incubator, and we hope to raise one or two Indian Runner ducks. We have homes for them already, but since it is rather early in the year, may need to incubate more for the farmer who would like some for his pond! We always have lots of exciting activities to look forward to, and as always, if you would like to have a look round our lovely school you are very welcome. Kersey Mill Newsletter Works have commenced and are at the early stages of the building of the stone furniture, above and around the stones is the stone furniture. How does it work? Well the grain, in the bins above, drops down the wooden chute into the hopper, the box above the millstones. Wooden sliders in the chutes can be pushed in to stop the flow of grain. The hopper is supported by the frame known as the horse, Below the hopper the shoe slopes down towards the eye of the stone. But the slope is not sufficiently steep for the grain to slide down and off the end unless it is agitated. This is done by the lower end of the quant which is square in section. As it turns, driving the millstone, the corners act as cams and strike the oak block on the end of the shoe. This joggles the grain into the eye of the Pictured is part of the stone. The end of the quant that does this is hexagonal tun cut from known as the damsel. The block is held against locally sourced Larch the damsel by a rope connected to a wooden leaf spring; a piece of ash that has been split along its length and bolted to the wooden tun around the stones. The arrangement of damsel and shoe is very elegant for it allows both manual and automatic control of the flow of grain. A watermill rarely runs at a constant speed. As the mill speeds up the quant turns faster, more grain is jogged off the end of the shoe. Likewise, as the mill slows, the flow of grain slows and even stops completely if the mill comes to rest. Thus the flow of grain is matched to the speed of the mill. But the miller, working on the floor may decide that there is not enough grain going through. By slackening off the rope that supports the end of the shoe, he can increase the slope of the shoe; the flow of grain increases. And likewise, if too much grain is going in and the stones are beginning to clog, tightening the rope reduces the slope of the shoe and thus the flow of grain. Hadleigh Nursing Home’s Concert for Comic Relief Hadleigh Nursing Home’s home grown talent performed at a special concert on Friday March 15, from 6pm to 8pm, to raise funds for Comic Relief charities. Esther Pemberton, administrator at the home in Friars Road, Hadleigh, sang with IIC Worship, a gospel choir attached to Ipswich International Church. Meanwhile, support worker Stewart Ashfield, a Michael Buble tribute artist, performed a medley of popular songs. The public joined residents and their families for the free Red Nose Day event at the Kingsley Healthcare run home. There were light refreshments, including Red Nose cupcakes, and a choice of drinks. Manager Tracey Burt said: “I hope everyone found the event a lot of fun. We were taking donations for Comic Relief.”
Fidelis Activity News Don Quixote:- Ballet lovers were enthralled by a spectacular performance of the ballet based on episodes from Cervantes’ familiar Spanish tale. At times the entire Royal Ballet Company seemed to be on the stage in colourful costumes, remembering the intricate choreography to a speedy musical score by Minkus. A thoroughly uplifting evening. Lunch Bunch:- Since The Brook Inn at Washbrook became a Community Pub in 2015 it has gone from strength to strength. The friendly pub is recognised for its delicious food which includes an extensive Gluten Free menu. Lunch Bunchers enjoyed a relaxing tasty lunch there just recently The Funny Side of Policing:- From a young, green ’Mr Plod’ on the beat to a mature, experienced Close Protection Officer was the story of our last speaker, Gary Egerton. Amusing tales of his early days in the Met when there were policeman on the beat encountering criminals and the public face to face, were both entertaining and unfamiliar by today’s policing methods. Gary rose through the ranks to detective and finally opting for Close Protection duties looking after Royals and dignitaries. Anecdotes of those unique experiences kept his audience and their visitors laughing and Chairperson Liz Wilson curious. This lead to a lively question and with Gary Egerton answer close to the meeting. JD

The most recent Country Threads Saturday workshop was devoted entirely to their new ambitious project - a massive hand sewn quilt. Ambitious is perhaps an understatement considering the plan is to cut out, quilt and back 480 pieces of colour coordinated squares of cotton lawn. These will then be painstakingly assembled and hand sewn to form a large colourful bedspread. The group is not daunted by the task ahead of them as they have already completed one such cover. There is also plenty of incentive to finish quilt number two as their first effort realised a considerable sum when it was raffled for the St Elizabeth Hospice several years ago. The new quilt will also be raffled and the proceeds will, once again, support the St Elizabeth Hospice, Ipswich. Work didn’t come to an end when the Saturday Workshop finished. Leader, Mavis Gordon, made sure everyone went home armed with cereal box templates and plenty of squares to work on before they all meet up again at their Wednesday group nights. Needless to say none of this is carried out in silence. There is plenty of chat, laughter and time to put the world to rights as the work progresses. Active Wellbeing Service, Inactive2Active Update Well, it’s been five months since the launch of the Inactive2active Service based at Hadleigh Boxford surgery and during this time it appears to be a great success! Over 50 patients have now met with me to discuss their physical activity needs and goals for activity in the future. The majority have become more mindful of living less sedentary lifestyles and the feedback indicates that many have tried a new activity such as chair based classes, swimming, Zumba Gold, Exercise on Referral, low impact aerobics and yoga to name but a few. Many have also increased their walking and have taken part in some of the many free health walks available locally. This service is aimed at patients who are currently not achieving more than 30 minutes of moderate activity a week, but who would like to understand the wider health benefits of being active and receive encouragement and ideas on how to move more in their everyday lives. The service also supports those wanting to find and access an appropriate, more structured activity, in order to increase activity levels. It’s not my role to deliver physical activity, more to help others understand what would be appropriate and to make an informed choice. Here is just some of the feedback from those that I have helped find what they were looking for: “I saw your advert and decided to phone and meet with you. You were understanding, helpful and encouraging without being pushy, the whole ethos has been so helpful. I was so afraid I was losing the ability to walk but after just a few classes I can feel a difference I so want to keep this up. It has given me confidence so much so that I am taking an extra class, making two a week. I know you are available should I need advice. Thank you so much for giving me hope.” “I attended the recommended fitness class yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it, just right for me and at the right tempo.” “The initial meeting with Janet and subsequent follow up and ongoing tailormade support have been second to none. I have found suggestions to integrate self-help and physical activities into my daily life, motivating.” “What a great programme that actually tries to help people stay healthy instead of just trying to fix them when they are ill.” I am passionate that any form of movement is important and should be celebrated without reflecting on ‘what I used to be able to do’ or ‘I’m too old to worry about that’. In my time here at Hadleigh and Boxford I have seen that there is a fantastic range of activities, providing something for everyone. Often people become less active due to a change in health circumstances, moving home, losing a loved one and/or retiring from work. Bildeston Primary School Our New School Minibus We are delighted to announce the arrival of our brand new minibus, complete with new branding and we couldn’t have done it without our schools’ partnership and its combined PE grant. The new minibus arrived last week and has been put to use straight away. It has 17 seats, allowing us to take children to more events and provide extra exciting opportunities! The bus will be used for lots of different trips which in turn will save the school additional costs in hiring coaches. Activities bring together parents, pupils and staff for share fun and enjoyable. Pupils and staff within the Bildeston & Whatfield partnership are delighted to have been able to make such a significant purchase. Able Writers Two of our children joined an Able Writers’ Day at Chilton Community Primary School on Tuesday 26 February 2019. They worked with one of the UK’s leading fiction and non-fiction writers, Robin Price. Robin has been running workshops in schools for many years. They brought back signed copies of his new book to school to share with their school friends. Westbourne U9 Mixed Basketball Event Bildeston sent a team to represent the school in a Basketball event held on Tuesday 26 February 2019 at Inspire Suffolk, Ipswich. Fourteen schools in total played at the event with a Bildeston pupil winning a fair play award at her first basketball event! She had no need to feel nervous!! U9 Multi Skills Event A team represented Bildeston at a Multi-Skills Festival on Friday 1 March 2019. The festival was held in the sports hall at Hadleigh High School, with other schools within the pyramid taking part. Our U7 will enter a team for the same later this month. World Book Day We celebrated World Book Day by holding a Reading Curiosity Café. The children all brought in their favourite book to show their class friends. French’s Care Haven & Care Farm Spring is here and everyone has that joyful spring in their step, which is lovely to see, but here at our animal rescue centre we are still in desperate need of a new base for our charity to continue all its good work with the animals and young people. URGENT APPEAL FOR LAND TO RENT Please ask about and spread the word of our appeal for a minimum of 20 acres grazing land preferably with a barn and some out buildings on it for us to rent/lease. We would love to have someone come on board as an investor or supporter of what we do, I am keeping faith that there is a kind soul who will help and I continue fighting the negativity that comes from people saying, ‘there is very few people now a days like that out there, they are all for themselves’. I think if you lose hope, what is there left? As a positive hopeful person myself, I carry on and do not give up. If you are on social media or know of notice boards in your area please spread the word of our appeal, as we need your help. All the animals in our care are well and we do have a 16hh horse up for loan, to go to a caring person that will give him lots of love and TLC. At the moment we are trying to raise the money for a vet visit we had to make for a horse with a face fracture, this is healing now, but x-rays and vet fees come at a large cost, especially for a horse. Are there any ladies out there who would like to join our small team and head the fundraising/projects team? You could have a hidden talent for this or maybe you have been a successful team member elsewhere before? We need a couple of ladies to take the reins and have a go at as many different types of events they can think of, it is not all work, there is a lot of fun and personal reward that you get from doing so much good to help a Charity in need. Please contact me if you would like to have a go. The Barn Dance we put on at The Ansell Centre in Hadleigh went well in December and we managed to raise £600. A big thank you goes out to the local Hose Pipe Band, especially Simon and Val. Our 4 donkeys have been little darlings throughout the winter and they play daily with their toys and anything they can get their mouths into, as you can see above. We are still managing to help young people that have learning difficulties and anxiety issues and they are all progressing very well working alongside of our animals. At last that precocious Chihuahua is preoccupied, leaving the computer unguarded for me to write this month’s news from the feline point of view. Most importantly, I must tell you about two cats, mother and daughter Fat Cat (I can hardly bring myself to type such a name!) and Betty. They have been with us far too long and need a quiet, understanding household to help them overcome their timid natures. A more dignified name for the mother wouldn’t go amiss either! Kenny would have my guts for garters if I didn’t tell you we have dogs too. The volunteers appreciated the warm spell in February but it’s back to wellies and warm jackets as the rain trickles down the office window. Hopefully the Spring will be in full flourish for our Easter Fair at the Old School, Long Melford, CO10 9DX, 10-3pm on 14th April. Lots of lovely items for friends, family and your pets, a big raffle and tombola, refreshments, free parking and only 50p admission. We will be helping at the Nayland 10K on 30th June and hoping for good weather. SESAW is one of the lucky charities being supported by this popular event which attracts many runners. Gale Pryor, Coach and Committee member said, “Since we began the sessions, we’ve had a terrific time. Some riders were complete novices when they started, others had simply lost their confidence. We’ve gone from the playground, to the Railway Walk and onto the road, in 6 weeks. “We are considering running another course this summer so if you are interested in finding out more, please contact me on 07811 435 883 by 30th April." Pause For Thought Imagine boarding a plane for your dream holiday when suddenly the pilot announces, ‘Welcome aboard. After take-off we’ll serve you a wonderful meal and provide you with drinks and do all we can to make your flight enjoyable. However, I need to tell you – we have no destination. That’s right; we’re just going to keep flying until we run out of fuel and drop into the ocean.’ No matter how wonderful the journey is, what’s the point if there’s no destination? The Bible tells us that Jesus said: ‘What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? (Mark 8: 36). Jesus is teaching us in these words that our final destination is more important than anything else. And, by the way, following Jesus in the here and now is the most peaceful, joyful and purposeful way to live your life confirmed in His words found in the Bible: ‘The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly’ (John 10: 10). Why not attend a Bible believing Church this Easter and discover how much Jesus loves you? The Bible tells us in Romans 5: 8 ‘But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.’ Greg Frost

Suffolk Rockets Netball Club All sections of the club have been buzzing lately! The teenies, juniors and adult clubs have all been very busy playing in the winter league and securing some fantastic results. Our Walking Netball is thriving, and we welcome new players each session. In February we entered 3 teams into the OBH annual u13 Tournament, all teams did amazingly and won at least 1 game. Sky Rockets went through the tournament with some fantastic play and won in the final 6-3 against Civil Service A, a fantastic result for Suffolk Rockets and our first Tournament win for the club. Well done Tilly Cotter for getting Player Of The Tournament for Sky Rockets. Everyone month we enter 2 Junior teams into the u16 Suffolk Junior Tournaments, our teams consist of u15/u14/u13 players, so far we have come 3rd or 4th each tournament out of 7 or 8 teams, great results considering the age group we enter. These tournaments really push the girls to play their best netball. Our Adult teams are enjoying the challenge of their first ever competitive Netball League and putting into practice what they have learnt in the last 2 seasons. Our ladies have a 'Back to Netball' Tournament in May, and shortly after will be starting the summer league in Colchester. We are also working with JC Personal Training to support our Adults to increase fitness. Walking Netball continues every fortnight at Hadleigh High School 9-10.30am, Walking Netball is a slower version of the game and is ideal for anyone who feels they lack fitness or confidence to go straight into our adult club, its also perfect for anyone recovering from injuries or has mobility concerns. Walking Netball is for any age. Our next sessions are 23rd March and 6th April. £5 a session which includes cake! Tech Savvy Brian’s Joyous Drive-In It was literally a joyous occasion when Newton Green Golf Club’s tech-savvy new captain drove off to celebrate the opening of his year in office. The rain clouds separated and sun appeared as he put his opening drive 183 yards down the fairway. Brian Joy has recently transformed the club’s information technology capacity, with all the latest aids now on board to push the 100-year-old organisation further forward, including a new web site. His joy was made even more complete when he and partner Peter Wordley won the day’s better ball competition. A 12-handicapper, he spent more than three decades in the managerial field of information technology marketing, before retiring to the Sudbury area. He had been a member of Purley Downs golf club in South London, and started golfing at Redhill and Reigate which, like Newton, is a James Braid designed course.

Water Softener Supply and Installation using Harvey Dualflo Water Softeners Hadleigh RFC in their new kit sponsored by the Marquis Hadleigh travelled north to the home of Norwich Union at the Sprowston Cricket ground with a heavily depleted squad, which saw six players injured or unavailable for this mighty Eastern Counties Div 1 play-off clash. With so many Hadleigh players out, a reshuffle saw players in unfamiliar positions facing a huge pack, and that set the tone for the first twenty minutes as Hadleigh were camped on the edge of their own twenty two. Facing a massive weight difference, Hadleigh were pushed back at three successive scrums yet still maintained a strong defensive line on the back foot. Wave after wave of Norwich pressure finally paid off as they broke the stoic Hadleigh line for their first try and this also resulted with the Hadleigh tight head prop leaving the field injured. With resolute leadership from hooker Ollie Beckerlegge and Eric Munezero coming on to prop, Hadleigh started fighting back with some hard running lines and support to open the field and take the pressure off, pushing for space and getting the backs running. This counter attack instantly bore fruit as Jake Kerr was put through for a try. Hadleigh finished the half with a narrow three point advantage but it was all to play for as the second half kicked off and a further injury saw veteran Neil Farrow come on to shore up the second row and help Hadleigh slowly get parity in the scrum. The big Norwich first receivers started to punch holes in the Hadleigh defense from the ruck’s and after a few penalties they again broke through to score. It was a close tense battle from the outset and the strong wind had a big influence on the line-outs but Hadleigh’s Logan Unwin was undaunted and managed a near faultless display in the air winning strategic ball for the backs to play off, resulting in a massively strong run from Charlie Eaden who crashed through three tackles to score for Hadleigh with Ryan Steer converting. With yet another injury another veteran was called upon, and Adam Miles came onto the field to join the second row with energetic new man Goff moving from six to twelve. The last fifteen minutes was a dogfight but after a successful penalty from Ryan Steer, Hadleigh mentally and physically held it together. After winning a defensive five-meter scrum resulting from Norwich being held up over the line, Hadleigh collectively cheered the final whistle and a 12-16 away victory.
Newton Green Golf Club AGM It was standing room only when Newton Green Golf Club held its annual meeting and awards presentation evening. Pictures show mixed competition winners and new trophy holders from the men's section. New men's captain Brian Joy, who spent more than three decades in information technology marketing, and has recently completely revamped the club's web site, was elected men's captain, and named Ian Woodhead as his vice captain. The evening also saw the retirement of Peter Philpott after six years in the chair. At the meeting, a cheque for £5,041 was presented to the Hope for Tomorrow charity, which provides mobile cancer care treatment for patients in West Suffolk. The presentation was made by recently retired captains Harry Wordley (seniors) and Lizzie Johnson (ladies) to the charity represented by Rachel Stokes (centre). The club has also sent a £270 donation to St Nicholas Hospice, the proceeds from an annual competition in memory of former head green keep Kelvin Sansum.
