From the Rectory In the BBC Reith Lectures, we are told that a moral revolution is needed. The ÙÞĝØêáéî éÝÚã ×ÚØäâÚè ìÝä ÜÚéè éä ÙÚěãÚ âäçÖáÞéî ÒÚ ÝÖëÚ Öã ÖãèìÚç to that question, and it is known as the bible. There’s an ancient story (2 Kings 22-23) of a society that had largely ÛäçÜäééÚã Ö×äêé ÂäÙ ÖãÙ îÚé äãÚ ÙÖî as they were clearing out the temple, they came across some scrolls which contained the Old Testament. From that day forth they decided to commit themselves to learning and applying the wisdom handed down to Moses to every generation to come. By the time of Jesus all Hebrew children would learn the scriptures by heart. What a contrast then to today where increasingly children do not own a bible and often don’t learn about the Christian faith, or any other, at school. Jesus attached great importance on those that had previously been excluded from worship having access both to worship and to ÝÞâ ÅÚèêè ìÖè éÝÚ ÛäêãÙÚç äÛ ÞãØáêèÞëÞéî ìäâÚã ìÞÙäìè äçåÝÖãè children, migrants, the sick, the poor. In fact, when some children were prevented from access to Jesus, he rebuked the well-meaning adults saying, “Let the children come to me!” ¾äââäãáî Ä ÝÚÖç éÝÚ ÛäááäìÞãÜ ØäââÚãé Ûçäâ åÖçÚãéè ĄÒÚ ìÖãé äêç ØÝÞáÙçÚã éä ØÝääèÚ Ûäç éÝÚâèÚáëÚè ìÝÚéÝÚç äç ãäé éä ×ÚáÞÚëÚ Þã ÂäÙą ÏÝÞè Þè Ö åäåêáÖç ëÞÚì ÖãÙ Öé ěçèé ÜáÖãØÚ ÖååÚÖçè éä ÝÖëÚ Ö ØÚçéÖÞã wisdom and compassion about it. Orchard Barn News Learning from the past how to build a greener future

ÅäÞã êè Öé ÊçØÝÖçÙ ½Öçã ¾äããÚØéÞãÜ ËÚäåáÚ ÖãÙ ÉÖéêçÚ Þã " You’re warmly invited to our Wassail in the Old Orchard Saturday 10th January, 2–3.30pm ¾äâÚ èÞãÜ ØÚáÚ×çÖéÚ ÖãÙ ìÖàÚ êå éÝÚ éçÚÚè Ûäç éÝÚ îÚÖç ÖÝÚÖÙ Orchard Barn in Ringshall (IP14 2LY) is launching a new year-long programme called ¾äããÚØéÞãÜ ËÚäåáÚ ÖãÙ ÉÖéêçÚ, and we’d love local residents to be involved. The åçäßÚØé äĚÚçè ÛçÞÚãÙáî ÝÖãÙè äã äêéÙääç activities that bring people together, build ØäãěÙÚãØÚ ÖãÙ ÝÚáå ØÖçÚ Ûäç äêç áäØÖá environment. Over the coming months we’ll be running skills-sharing workshops, guided nature connection days, community composting and soil-health sessions, and establishing ìÞáÙĜäìÚç ÖçÚÖè and bee hives to support pollinators. Everything is relaxed, welcoming, and suitable for all ages — no experience needed. These activities are ideal for anyone who enjoys being outside, wants to learn something practical, or simply appreciates good company. By joining in, you’ll be helping to increase biodiversity, improve soil health, and support local food resilience, while also enjoying time in nature and meeting new people. This programme was shaped by feedback from over 100 people at our recent Celebration of Orchard Life, many of whom asked for more opportunities to connect with nature and each other. News from 3rd Sudbury Scout Group ÏÝÚ ěãÖá ÝÖáÛ éÚçâ äÛ ! ìÖè Öã exciting one for the 3rd Sudbury ÎØäêé Âçäêå Öè âäèé äÛ äêç sections got the chance to enjoy our brand-new climbing wall. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts have all made great use of the facility some bravely scaling right to the top, others mastering the side-to-side traverse. Community learning has also been a big theme. Our Squirrel Scouts ìÚáØäâÚÙ Ö áäØÖá åäáÞØÚ äĝØÚç ÖãÙ áÚÖçãÚÙ Ö×äêé éÝÚ ÞâåäçéÖãØÚ äÛ keeping our environment tidy. Wednesday Beavers had a visit from the local food bank to discover how it supports families and how we can ÝÚáå ìÝÞáÚ ÁçÞÙÖî ½ÚÖëÚçè ÝÖëÚ ×ÚÚã ÙÚëÚáäåÞãÜ èäâÚ ëÖáêÖ×áÚ ěçèé aid skills. ÒÚ çäêãÙÚÙ äĚ ! ìÞéÝ åáÚãéî äÛ festive fun, including cooking, crafts and Christmas parties. Many of our sections also enjoyed a trip to the Quay Theatre to see the pantomime, and the Wednesday Beavers even held a Christmas-themed sleepover complete with a full Christmas dinner! Now we’re looking forward to even more fun and adventure in 2026. ¾Öã Ôäê ÃÚáå Ðè We’re looking for more adult volunteers to help us deliver exciting activities. You don’t need to have been a Scout, and no prior scouting skills are required just enthusiasm, empathy and a good sense of humour. We can teach you the rest! Michelle started volunteering with HomeÎéÖçé ÎêĚäáà Þã ÖãÙ ØäãéÞãêÚè éä Ùä èä ãäì ÎÝÚ ÝÖè äĚÚçÚÙ èêååäçé éä families in the Waveney area and has been ÖìÖçÙÚÙ Ö ÃÞÜÝ ÎÝÚçÞĚ äÛ ÎêĚäáà ÖìÖçÙ Ûäç volunteering. “Being a parent is the hardest job in the world. As well as being the most wonderful and magical experience, it can feel lonely, confusing and guilt ridden too! It always looks like everyone has it together and no one else feels like you do. However quite often they are or have been in the same place. “I enjoy helping people and leaning on my own experiences to help others, ensuring they feel they are not the only ones who have been through tough times. ćÀëÚçîäãÚ Öé ÃäâÚ ÎéÖçé ÎêĚäáà Þè ÛÖãéÖèéÞØ ÒÚ ÝÖëÚ Ö ØääçÙÞãÖéäç éÝÖé supports us as volunteers and they regularly check in. Facts and Figures from our Past

I sometimes wonder how life was in the past and recently how it was in % " îÚÖçè ÖÜä % " ìÖè éÝÚ ÙçÚÖÙÛêá ÂÚãÚçÖá ÎéçÞàÚ éÝÖé ØÖêèÚÙ hardship for so many people, especially those in the mining areas. I was given a written account of school memories in 1926 by an elderly aunt a few years ago. These are some of the sad facts; many of the children didn’t have shoes. When the school photo was taken, the children with shoes sat in the front row. Teachers would supply very poor children with soup. It was a common practise for pupils to bring a åäéÖéä Þã ÞÙÚãéÞěÚÙ ×î ØÖçëÞãÜ éÝÚÞç ÞãÞéÞÖáè éä ×Ú ÝÚÖéÚÙ Öé èØÝääá Ûäç their lunch. Many children died from scarlet fever, diphtheria, measles, whooping ØäêÜÝ ÖãÙ åäáÞä ÄââêãÞïÖéÞäãè ÖãÙ ëÖØØÞãÖéÞäãè ÝÖÙãąé ×ÚÚã developed. The criteria for selection are that the candidate should be between Maria Mills (who organised the Christmas lunch) and Foster 18 and 26 on 1 September 2026. This is an opportunity for a young man or ÅäãÚè ×Úèé ¾ÝçÞèâéÖè äêéěé woman to take part in activities out äÛ éÝÚÞç ãäçâÖá ØäâÛäçé ïäãÚ ÞãØáêÙÞãÜ éÚÖâ ×êÞáÙÞãÜ éÚÖâ ìäçàÞãÜ ÖãÙ áÚÖÙÚçèÝÞå ÖØéÞëÞéÞÚè âÚÚéÞãÜ ØÝÖááÚãÜÚè ÖãÙ ÜÖÞãÞãÜ ØäãěÙÚãØÚ as an individual. The course will take place at the end of August and costs will be sponsored by the Sudbury Club. News from the Hive Community Hub ¿ÚèåÞéÚ ëÚçî ÝÚÖëî çÖÞã äã ÏÝêçèÙÖî $ ¿ÚØÚâ×Úç the Winter Celebration at the Hive Community Hub in School Street, Sudbury, was well attended. A varied programme of songs and carols were sung by members of St John’s Methodist Church Choir. There was a superb performance by the recently re-formed St Lawrence Handbell Ringers Ûçäâ Âé ÒÖáÙÞãÜěÚáÙ ÖãÙ ÜêÞéÖçÞèé ÍÞØÝÖçÙ ÎéÖãÛäçÙ çÚâÞãÙÚÙ éÝÚ audience of “When Santa got stuck up the chimney” along with other festive music! The idea for the Winter Celebration came from nearby William Wood House and several residents attended with their careers. With encouragement to join in with the singing and some of the carer’s dancing to the music, a good time was had by all. The afternoon was completed with tea and mince pies served by volunteers from Hive. Friars Hall was brightly dressed with lanterns on individual tables, and the Hive decorated Christmas Tree (transferred at the end of Sudbury Rotary Club’s Tree Festival) took centre stage, with balloon garlands hung from the walls – all creating a festive atmosphere. ÏÝÞè ìÖè éÝÚ ěçèé éÞâÚ ÁçÞÖçè ÃÖáá ÝÖÙ ×ÚÚã êèÚÙ Ûäç Ö åê×áÞØ ÚëÚãé èÞãØÚ the new gas boiler and radiators were installed. While there are several regular users, rooms are available on some weekdays and Saturdays from 8am – 10pm. Because the original gas boiler is now over 40 years’ old and failing, fund-raising will continue to replace heating in the Joy Abbot Hall, so that it too can be used all year round for concerts and other events. Hello to our readers, I hope as always you have been keeping well. We still need extra help at the weekends, so we are looking for someone who can work a Saturday or Sunday morning, my number is below to call me for more details. In our photos today is one of our helpers with our lovely donkeys and the other is Lucy our beautiful loving therapy dog, saying she hopes you had a good Christmas and wishing a happy new year to you all. I would like to say thank you to the Boxford friendship group for raising some money for us and a thank you to Boxford united charities for the fund they gave us for this year. Every pound raised helps us with all our huge outgoings, so we cannot thank those donators enough, along with our monthly donators who mean so much to us and are very much appreciated, I hope 2026 if a good year for you all. Talking about a good year ahead, as you âÞÜÝé ÖáçÚÖÙî àãäì ìÚ ÝÖëÚ éä âäëÚ äĚ the land we are on, due to the owners house being up for sale. We love the area and want to keep all our helpers/volunteers and the people we support with us, as well as our local supporters who come to our open days and fund raising events.
