Work to begin on Riverside Path Babergh District Council has completed the purchase of a section of land in Great Cornard that will link the parish to Sudbury via a Stour-side footpath. The land had previously been owned by the Long Melford and Sudbury Angling Association, which agreed to sell the land to Babergh. To mark the purchase Babergh’s Leader, Cllr John Ward, visited the area and was joined by Great Cornard councillors Tony Bavington, Tom Burrows and Mark Newman, and Cllr Jan Osborne, who has been closely involved in the delivery of the footpath. Once completed the path will provide an extension to the existing Cornard Riverside Path, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy more of the riverbank as well as providing pedestrian access to the River Stour Trust’s Visitor and Education Centre at Dovehouse Meadow. When complete, the path will form a pedestrian route from Dovehouse Meadow in Great Cornard to the Cornard Riverside Path. This area had previously formed a ‘missing link’ and its purchase will now enable the entire route from Dovehouse Meadow to Friars Meadow near the Kingfisher Leisure Centre to be enjoyed. Cllr John Ward, Leader of Babergh District Council, said: “The purchase of this land, with the co-operation of the Angling Association, is great news: there has been a real drive for this path from both the community and from councillors across the political spectrum. We’re now set to complete the path and I’m looking forward to putting on my walking boots and enjoying the sights and sounds of the Stour from Dovehouse Meadow to Friars Meadow.”

Knight RGN, RM Upbeat Heart Support Group, based in Bury St. Edmunds and Long Melford, has been recognised with The Queens Award for Voluntary Service for 2018. Upbeat is a voluntary run group who work in the local community providing rehabilitation exercise classes and support for people with heart related illnesses and has been honoured with the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can achieve in the UK. Upbeat is also a self-funding group completely run by volunteers and has been providing rehabilitation classes and support for heart patients and their carers for over twenty years in the local area. The group offers three sessions of exercise classes on four mornings per week, plus one evening. A Cardiac nurse and a highly trained Cardiac Instructor are in attendance at all times, giving members the confidence to exercise in a safe environment. Chairman, Sylvia Baker and Secretary Hilary Neeves were invited to a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace on 15th May where members of the Royal Family were present and also the other winners of this year’s awards. This award was created by The Queen in 2002 to celebrate the anniversary of the Queen's coronation, recognising excellence in voluntary activities carried out by groups in the community. It is the equivalent of the M.B.E. for volunteer groups. Sylvia says:- “I am absolutely thrilled at this fantastic honour which represents a tremendous achievement for all members of Upbeat and everybody involved should feel immensely proud of the recognition this award represents which is the MBE for volunteer groups. A signed certificate from Her Majesty will be presented at a later date by the Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk. Well done everybody.” Hilary says “This award represents a tremendous achievement for the organisation. Not only for the people in charge now, but for those that set it up in the beginning and for all the volunteers that have followed on during the years. We feel immensely proud of the recognition that this Award represents.”

Local members of The Royal British Legion to represent Long Melford at WW1 Comemmorations in Belgium Members of the Long Melford branch of The Royal British Legion are to join thousands on a pilgrimage of Remembrance to World War One battlefield that culminates in a parade and ceremony in Ypres as part of the end of the First World War centenary commemorations this August. The Royal British Legion event, known as Great Pilgrimage 90 (GP90), takes place between the 5th and 9th of August and will be one of the largest in the charity’s history. GP90 will mark 90 years since the original Royal British Legion Pilgrimage in 1928, which saw 11,000 World War One veterans and war widows visit the battlefields of the Somme in France and Ypres in Belgium, a decade after the conflict ended. That Pilgrimage culminated in a march through Ypres to the Commonwealth War Grave Commission’s Menin Gate Memorial for a ceremony to commemorate the launch of The Hundred Days Offensive and in remembrance of those who never returned. Local Legion members, Matt Baker and Martin Richards will represent the Long Melford Branch and the local community at the event, as Standard Bearer and wreath layer respectively. Matt and Martin will tour some of the same battlefields and cemeteries visited by those on the 1928 Pilgrimage, before marching along the original route through Ypres, to the Menin Gate on the 8th August, bearing their branch standard and a wreath. They will join more than 2,200 other Legion representatives and dignitaries, including Civic and military guests from the UK, Commonwealth and Northern Europe who are taking part. Once at the Menin Gate, Martin will lay a wreath on behalf of the long Melford community. Martin who is the Branch Secretary of the Long Melford Branch of The Royal British Legion, comments: “Great Pilgrimage 90 is a unique opportunity for the Legion community to come together and bear our Standards along the same route in Ypres taken 90 years earlier by the veterans and widows of the First World War. The Long Melford Branch looks forward to proudly representing Long Melford at the event.� As local champions of Remembrance, the Long Melford Branch of The Royal British Legion is looking to work in partnership with their community to bring their unique Remembrance message to the Menin Gate, on their wreath, where it will be displayed in a wreath installation for viewing by the general public until the end of August. The parade will start at midday and we encourage the public to make the trip across to Ypres for the 8th August and fill the Market Square to watch the parade, Hundred Days Offensive ceremony and then enjoy an afternoon of musical entertainment including The Central Band of the Royal British Legion. To celebrate National BookStart Week, Long Melford Library hosted a BookStart Party at Connect Mother and Toddler Group. Suffolk Libraries BookStart Bear was the guest of honour at this welcoming group, which meets at St Catherine's Church, Long Melford between 9am and 11am every Monday morning during term time. The children were treated to Storytime with Christine Smith and Pam Tonks and then everyone received a free copy of ‘A Busy Day for Birds’ by Lucy Cousins. National Bookstart Week is the BookTrust's annual celebration of the joys and benefits of sharing books, stories and rhymes from as early an age as possible. The Chiropractic Clinic Sudbury Dr Eilidh Maher first decided to follow a career in chiropractic after becoming interested in the benefit that it gave to her and her family when she was younger. Vision for Prosperity Action Plan for Sudbury The Sudbury Vision for Prosperity Action Plan was launched as part of the Sudbury’s Suffolk Day celebrations. A drop-in session was held on Saturday 21st June in the Sudbury Town Hall, Old Market Place, Sudbury. The plan includes updates on existing projects and news on forthcoming actions on; carparking, town centre vision, marketing and branding, strategies, infrastructure and tourism investments. Officers and councillors were on hand at the launch to discuss the next steps, including delivery of the exciting projects and possible additional projects. Councillor John Ward, Leader of Babergh District Councils said, “Babergh District Council is leading the renaissance in Sudbury and its surrounding area as part of a new drive for investment and growth District-wide. The main feature of our June calendar was the annual Prom Concert held on Saturday 16th June at St Peter’s; this year’s was probably one of the most enjoyable ever with a record attendance and featured the welcome return of the popular Long Melford Silver Band with its new conductor, Nigel Partridge, taking the stage for us for the first time and really “working the audience” in the traditional items towards the end of every Prom Concert. This year’s was rather special because the Silver Band paid tribute to the RAF by playing Walford Davies’ RAF March and to the soldiers of the 1914-18 war. Emphasising the wide range of music which we enjoyed, other items included Karl Jenkins’ Benedictus, the Best of Bond and a miscellany from West Side Story. Taking up the West Side story cue, Sudbury’s young soprano Evie Press enthralled the audience with her rendition of “I feel pretty” and perhaps even more so Puccini’s O Mio Babbino Caro, accompanied on the organ by Rotarian Roger Green. Not surprisingly the audience called for encores from both Evie and the Silver Band and we ended the night singing “Bring me sunshine”. What an event! – I did wonder at one point whether there might also be dancing in the aisles. Maybe next year because the Silver Band is already booked for next year’s concert on 15th June 2019. Mark this date in your diaries now! Preceeding this year’s Prom Concert, Sudbury Rotary held a Charity Auction at 12 noon on the same day. The auctioneer was Rotarian Richard Kemsley, a true professional in this role. Thanks to him, the generosity of local businesses and fellow Rotarians – and of course those who purchased the 50or-so items – we raised over £1850. The proceeds from all except one item swill be shared between this year’s Rotary local charities: Compassion and Kernos Rotary is one of the largest humanitarian organisations in the world. All funding raised for charities goes direct without deduction for administration. Rotary is open to people of all ages and we would like more of you to join us, both as individuals and as companies. Corporate membership is ideal for medium (and large!) companies whereby a number of staff can become members as part of their company and enjoy all the rights and privileges whilst sharing out the activities between them. Membership, whether as individuals or as part of a company, is a good way to get involved with the local community and further afield. As a Rotarian you are not only part of an active local club but also part of a world-wide organisation with over 32,000 clubs across the world where any Rotarian is a welcome visitor. Sudbury Rotary itself meets weekly on Mondays at lunchtime at the Mill Hotel. We are also setting up a Rotary Community Forum which will meet on a more informal basis and we have established “Friends of Rotary” for those of you who would like to be aware of our on-going activities. Plans for the coming Presidential year which started this month (July) include establishing “Rotakids” in some local primary schools, alongside our existing environmental and career development work and annual sponsorship for Rotary Youth Leadership awards. Next year’s local charities will be the Richmond Fellowship, Befriending and the East Anglia Air Ambulance. Internationally we will be continuing our support for a community school in Tanzania and through existing links with the Mali Development Group, for street children in Mali. We hope to continue to run the various community events for which – I think – we have become well-known together with perhaps one or two new events such as Apple Pressing and a “President’s concert. 50 of the best East Anglian artists come together for the new look Sudbury Summer Art Fair The Sudbury Summer Art Fair is back in July and bigger than ever with over 50 professional artists and artisan crafters showcasing their work at the iconic St Peters Church in Sudbury. Curated and managed by local artist and business woman Michele Webber, this event promises to be one of the largest gatherings of professional artists in Sudbury and is expected to welcome thousands of art lovers to the week-long event. Michele’s vision for the Sudbury Summer Art Fair is to bring together the best professional artists and artisan crafters that East Anglia has to offer for an annual exhibition that puts art front and centre for local residents. For 2018 the Sudbury Summer Art Fair has a new website, a bright yellow sunflower logo and business sponsorship from some great local brands. Professional artists will be displaying paintings, printmaking, jewellery, pottery, fused glass and more. Four stands have been donated to local schools and visitors will be able to enjoy artwork from students of Ormiston Sudbury Academy, Thomas Gainsborough School, St Gregory Primary and The Ryes College. There will be refreshments and cakes available and an art activity table to keep little ones entertained. For the first time the art fair will have demonstrations from artists during the entire duration of the show: Demonstrations will include Wet Felting, Watercolour Painting, Pottery, Screen Printing and more. In addition to a unique visitor experience a percentage of the profits will be donated to the St Peter’s Regeneration fund, helping to maintain and improve this fabulous local venue for future generations. The exhibition preview evening is Monday 2nd July 7-9pm (all welcome), the exhibition will be officially opened by Mark Bills, Director of Gainsborough’s House at 7.30pm. The exhibition continues 3rd to 8th July 10am to 6pm with late night shopping Friday 6th (open until 9pm). Awesome Summer Fun at Hollow Trees Farm The Hollow Trees farm trail and events team have been busy making plans for the summer and have got some really exciting activities lined up for you throughout the school holidays. There’s always fun to be had on our existing farm trail with animals to feed and lots of great activities but the team wanted to bring you even more fun opportunities! So, when the schools break up for summer every day from Saturday 21st July until Tuesday 4th September inclusive, you will be able to have even more adventures in our floral maze, then you can take your sledge to the top of the hill and whizz down the Cresta run. As if that’s not enough, we have arranged some extra ‘bonus’ days too, for no additional charge. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk “At this time of year South Suffolk really does explode into vibrant natural splendour. It’s the open gardens season, with flora and fauna to the fore, and a chance for all of us to enjoy Suffolk at its best. A personal favourite is heading off on my bike along narrow rural backroads, to have the immense pleasure of seeing a hare or two scampering ahead in the distance. Then there is the still open water of the Stour, where whole stretches lull along seemingly unchanged from when Constable painted there. The constituency is spoilt for choice if you want to sample the best of the open gardens tradition. It would be remiss of me to pick a favourite, though I understand Chelsworth is one of the longest running in the whole country. But I do very much admire those who go to such trouble to throw open their home turf for people to marvel at from far and wide. On the matter of fauna, I am delighted to be the RSPB Parliamentary Species Champion of the Turtle Dove. This migrant species, once a staple of Suffolk’s summer skyline, has declined by more than 95% across the UK since 1970, partly as the unavoidable result of changes in farming methods. I recently attended an RSPB visit in Boxford to see the work that a local farmer is doing to provide improved habitats to try to tempt these birds to land and nest in our area. The reversal of species decline, as with the majority of the issues facing our country, depends on heightened awareness, particularly in terms of educating the next generation. Therefore, I was pleased to donate an owl box – kindly made for me by a talented RSPB volunteer - to Bentley Primary School on the launch day of their Beast, Birds and Bugs club. Beyond education, the protection of our wildlife relies on action at national and international levels. As such, I was delighted that the Government recently banned the sale of ivory products in the UK, a crucial step towards ensuring the future of one of the world’s most endangered animals.”

Gillian Holroyd is a thoroughly modern witch, but if she falls in love it is said that she will lose her powers. When, guided by her cat Pyewacket, she casts a spell to make her attractive neighbour in the flat upstairs fall in love with her, she is unprepared for the outcome. Weekly relaxation classes are being launched at a well-being centre in Sudbury The classes are designed to help people to cope with a range of emotional and well-being issues such as anxiety, stress and depression. Each Monday the guided relaxation classes will be held at the ExploringU Centre of Wellbeing in Sudbury, between 6.30pm and 7.30pm. The classes will be delivered by experienced counsellors Glenda Roberts and Sharon Kendall who are both members of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) . Ms Kendall said: “During the classes we will guide people through a range of techniques to help them to relax and to help them to cope with the emotional well-being issues they may have. We will guide to places of safety and calmness. Breathing techniques will help people go into a deep relaxation which is a very light form of hypnosis. Relaxation has many benefits; it reduces our bodies metabolism, our heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, muscle tension and it calms our brain activity. It also helps us with attention and decision making. Rights of a father in separation or divorce? In most situations, when a relationship comes to an end it will be in the best interests for any children to still maintain contact with both parents. In an ideal situation, both the father and the mother will be able to agree the amount of contact without the courts involvement, however, if this cannot be agreed the courts will intervene. A father has a right to contact with their children and the court deem the parents the best people to make the decision regarding how much contact each parent should have. The only exception to this would be in specific cases where previous behaviour on the part of a parent may indicate otherwise. There are no rules regarding the minimum amount of contact that the father is entitled to, with many families choosing to allow the father contact one night a week and alternative weekends (Friday through to Sunday). This is obviously determined in line with what suits the family best and considerations such as the mother and fathers working hours and distance from each other need to be factored into account. What if an agreement can’t be reached? In instances where the amount of contact cannot be agreed, getting guidance from a Family Law solicitor may be necessary and doing this is a recommended first step. The court may insist on both parents attending mediation in order for an agreement to be reached. However, in the event mediation cannot take place, or is unsuccessful and the courts need to determine how much contact a father should have, this can be far more complex with a number of factors having to be considered. It is at this point that any explicit wishes of the child may be taken into consideration, subject to the age/maturity of the child. The father’s role in making decisions Regardless of the amount of contact the father has each week with the child/children, if the father has parental responsibility then the father is still legally entitled to be involved in key decisions about the child’s future, for example, the choice of school or where they should receive medical care. These decisions would need to be made jointly alongside the mother who would also have parental responsibility. In most situations of divorce or separation proceedings, a father will have parental responsibility. This includes where the mother and father were married, or if they were not married but the father is named on the birth certificate and the child was born after 1st December 2003. With reigning champion Jed Seeley not managing to appear following playing in the England Amateur Championships previous day, Oakey took advantage to post a two round, two below par score of 136. Had Seeley been present, he would have had his work cut out stopping Oakey, who shot a level par 69 in the first round, and then followed up with a 67, including a run from the third of three birdies, a par and an eagle on the par five seventh. Lord Tebbit’s visit to Sudbury raised over £400 for the St Peter’s regeneration fund earlier this month. The former Secretary of State and Conservative Party chairman appeared at the venue on Saturday June 2nd in a Q&A event hosted by Andrew Phillips, which around 80 people attended. That first weekend in June was a big success for St Peter’s, which also hosted an acoustic performance by T.Rex tribute band T.Rextasy. The glam rock outfit raised over £1,400, which has been split between the band’s chosen cause – SESAW animal welfare charity – and the St Peter’s regeneration fund. The St Peter’s regeneration fund campaign is seeking to raise money to match grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund to bring the former church’s facilities up to date and create a cultural venue fit for 21st century Sudbury. Vice Chair of the Friends of St Peter’s, Peter Gray, said: “Many thanks are due Lord Tebbit, Andrew Phillips and T.Rextasy, all of whom gave their time for free to raise money for our fund. “It’s hard to imagine two more contrasting evenings out but they reflect the diversity of events we are aiming for, so we can open up St Peter’s to all members of the community.” More fund-raising concerts are planned including, later this month, American duo, Anna Tivel and Jeffrey Martin, and the award-winning performance poet, Luke Wright. Thanks to the wonderful response from you, your friends and relations and a world wide ‘plug’ on every social media ap. imaginable, we were the fortunate winners of the maximum grant in this region. So much work has already been carried out as a result of this, and last of all will come the resurfacing of the arena. We are ever grateful to the Foundation, and to all our wonderful Shelley supporters. I’m sorry to hear that rabbits have begun vandalising some of Mr Chisnell’s ground works already. The cocky little pests are quite a problem. Fancy something so small being able to dig down to the hardcore below the nice surface of the yard, and bring up rocks for the ponies to tread on! Does anyone have advice for our maintenance team that would help stop this invasion? We do enjoy a lot of wild life here, but the bunnies are too numerous to be loved. The stables have had doves nesting in them this year, but fewer swallows. There is a good line in horse flies (not loved), bees (in the wild flower patch) and kestrels (above us). I don’t see it all from my room of course, but I hear the gossip. This year our Shelley Show took a different turn: the dressage section was ridden on the afternoon or Tuesday 12th June, leaving Sunday 24th June entirely devoted to The Countryside Challenge. My photos show Dawid setting off to do his dressage test looking extremely smart, and Ruth putting Bob through his paces. Look for more show pictures in my August blog! Now that’s something you don’t see every day. Maisie, the springer and I were meeting the lovely people at Lush Cosmetics in Ipswich because they were donating profits from their Charity Pot cream to SESAW. Suddenly we saw a human striding through the precinct with a tall contraption strapping to his back. Apparently it was the Google Earth guy, mapping the precinct with a 360 ħ camera. And I thought he was there just to photograph me! Mind you, Maisie and I were soon the centre of attention again but I really didn’t know where to look when she rolled on her back for tummy tickles. That dog is SO embarrassing! I should explain about Maisie. She arrived at SESAW one Christmas, in great pain, hardly able to walk. Luckily our talented vet was able to correct a birth defect on her legs. She patiently endured a long recovery period, remaining calm as her dressings were changed and licking everyone who cared for her. Two years later our Spaniel enjoys life, goes for short walks and loves nothing better than a squeaky toy. Our volunteers are looking forward to attending the Eight Ash Green Music Festival on 21st July and then it’s all systems go for our own Open Day and Fun Dog Show, 12 - 4 pm on Sunday 29th July at the Sanctuary. Lots to see, do and eat plus entertainment from HUG - the Hadleigh Ukulele Group! We are still in need of raffle prizes for this, our happiest day of the year.
