We wish you a merry October! It hardly seems possible that this will be the fourth event in December, since we started The Christmas Present Trust in 2015. The trust aims to provide a traditional meal and entertainment on Christmas Day for people in Hadleigh and the surrounding areas who, for whatever reason, would be without family and friends at this time. The event can only happen with the generous support from businesses and individuals in the locality, together with the immense kindness and support we receive from our volunteers. Our Bank Holiday Sale raised over £400 and we have been promised a donation by The Co-op. Donations from any source are always welcome, whether in the form of money or goods and services. Financial donations can be made directly to the lovely team at Ipswich Building Society as they hold the trust funds. This year we are looking to purchase some equipment and increase our marketing, thus ensuring the longevity of the event for the foreseeable future. We will be contacting all those who have volunteered with us before. While it would be lovely to see you again, please do not feel any obligation to join us just because you have volunteered in the past. This article is aimed at raising additional awareness and perhaps for the recruitment of people new to this event. The Christmas Present Trust values all its volunteers and its sponsors, but we do realise that our volunteers have family and friends as well, and that there are other worthy causes within the community. On Wednesday October 17th we will be holding a meeting for all interested parties, existing volunteers as well as new potentials, at The Ansell Centre, Market Place, Hadleigh, starting at 7.30pm Drinks and nibbles will be provided. We welcome ideas and suggestions for entertainment, general organisation and in particular, f you have any specific skills (catering, driving, social care, entertaining, first aid etc) please do make yourself known to us. There was a great buzz of excitement as choir members returned for the first rehearsal after the summer break. Friends were warmly greeted with many enquiries about ‘how was your summer?’ And it was great to welcome five new members and two returning former members. Sarah Gallop, our MD, was as bubbly as ever and soon had us laughing and learning the new numbers. The new term enthusiasm will be needed as we get ready for five performances before Christmas: • Firstly supporting the Hadleigh Civic Service on Sept 23rd in St Mary’s including a beautiful version of The Lord is My Shepherd. • The Hate Crime Vigil in Bury St Edmunds cathedral comes on October 15th – Lady Gaga’s Born This Way will get us in the mood! • We are also very pleased to be part of A Nations Tribute - a concert of Remembrance held at the United Reformed Church, Hadleigh on Saturday 10th November. • Then we’ll be at Chelsworth for their Christmas fair in late November. • The big finale will be our own Winter Concert on December 8th, once again in the United Reformed Church – some varied and unusual Christmas songs but also other numbers for anyone suffering an attack of ‘bah humbug’! We are a friendly and welcoming choir and no audition is necessary. Hadleigh Sporting Community HCN readers may be interested to know that at the end of last year following the suspension of the Town Council’s Neighbour Plan Working Party, myself (Chair of Hadleigh United Football Club and Charlie Warburton (Chair of Hadleigh Rugby Club) started our own initiative and invited the leaders of all other Hadleigh Sports Clubs to come together to discuss and share details about their Clubs, and their Club’s issues, visions and needs. The response was very encouraging and 11 Hadleigh Sports Clubs agreed to participate. Our objective was to firstly ‘pull together’ and document the facts and figures about each club with details of their status, their facilities and their activities. Secondly we asked each Club to identify their issues and challenges and their visions. We then sought to align the Club’s visions with the top 6 priorities stated by Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council in their first publicly released Leisure Sport and Physical Activity Strategy. It is worth pointing out that very few of the Sports Club’s knew about this Strategy document that was released late in 2017. HCN readers can read extracts from the District Strategies and Policies that are relevant to the Sporting Community by reading our full report via https://www.hadleigh-millfield.co.uk/hcn Finally we identified our common needs and proposed solutions, with a view to publishing a document to assist our Town Councillors who are charged with producing and updating our Neighbourhood Plan. We want to ensure that the needs of the Hadleigh Sporting Community are fully reflected in our Neighbourhood Plan, rather than containing a few sentences stating what facilities we have. One of the key messages emerging from our report that is backed up with detailed evidence is that Hadleigh needs more land to be made available for use by the growing demand for open space sports such as Rugby, Cricket and Football. We are also seeing evidence that other clubs are struggling to be accommodated by the facilities available in Hadleigh and having to look elsewhere. Now that the Town Council seems to be back on track with producing our Neighbourhood Plan our report has been sent to the Town Clerk for distribution to all our Town Councillors and it has also been sent to the District Council. Our report shows that the 11 Hadleigh Clubs who participated in our initiative have a combined total of 309 Volunteers who are providing a tremendous service to the Local Community by giving up their time to provide opportunities for our young people to participate in their chosen sports. The report shows we have a combined membership of 2305 people, 1118 Participating Junior Members and 561 participating Adult members. During my 41 years in Hadleigh I have not seen any increase in open space land for sporting activities, so is it not time for our Local Authorities to take on board our needs and to promote and help secure improved facilities for our growing Sporting Community to enjoy. Well here we go, another month gone and only fifteen weeks till Christmas (at the time of writing). Last month's missive got lost in the admin stages, so to re-cap: As a result of the local by-election we welcomed our two new members and they are Cllr Andrew Knock and Cllr Brian Loftus, we wish them well in their new roles. The mower is out of hibernation after the long dry spell we had, and the lawn is green!!! The proposal for the new swimming pool is moving forwards, and Tracy from SSL has offered to keep me up to date with the progress. I also had a meeting with McCarthy and Stone Developers at the riverside site, and now that the preliminary works are complete the disruption to the shopping environment in the area should ease considerably, although there will be deliveries of plant and materials. The Council have relaunched their facebook page and advice has been taken on how to make it more user friendly. There are still concerns on the subjects of Policing and late night transport services which the Council are pursuing along with other concerned bodies in the town. Shearman the sheep has arrived in the churchyard to mark Hadleigh's part in the wool trade.It is an interactive sculpture I am told, so feel free to touch it and take photos should you wish. Also not to be missed is the fine display of poppies cascading down the tower of the church,to remember the fallen, a thank you to all involved in this installation. On a lighter note, do you like me have trouble with solar powered lights, in that when it rains, (I know it didn't for a while) they get water inside. To combat this a smear of vaseline (other products are available) around the edges and seals helps. Peter Matthews

Hadleigh Evening WI We traditionally do not have a meeting in August but we did have our usual Ramble & Tea. The Tea was hosted by Carole Cranston and we enjoyed a lovely sunny afternoon in her garden. Joan Rudman, as usual, organised a special Raffle and from the Raffle and donations, ÂŁ130 was raised for Macmillan. For the September meeting our speaker was Fiona Rose who talked about, "the Homes of William Morris ". William Morris lived from 1834 to1896 and so he died aged only 62. He had several accomplishments. He was an author, publisher, weaver, translator and, as well as, becoming later, a socialist and environmentalist. When asked, he said that the most important product of art was a beautiful home. Early in his life he had a taste for unusual furniture. In his homes he experimented with interior design. Four of his homes are, today, open to the public. He loved nature, rivers and everything Medieval and these loves are manifested in his textile and wallpaper designs, as well as in some furniture which he had commissioned. William was born at Elm House in Walthamstow. His father bought shares in some copper mines and this made him a lot of money. The family moved to Woodford Hall. this house had a river running through its extensive grounds and William had a happy childhood full of boating and fishing. He was educated at Marlborough and then at Exeter College, Oxford where he met one of his life long friends, Ned Burne-Jones. Fiona told us how after trying architecture and then painting, William met up with two other people who were also to become life long friends, Philip Webb and Dante Gabriella Rossetti. In 1857, he met his wife Janey whom he saw as his medieval lady and he painted her as Gwinevere. He bought a piece of land and his friend, Ned Burne-Jones designed The Red House in Bexley Heath which is now open to the public. Living with friends gave William a business idea for producing stained glass, wallpaper and textiles. He also commissioned unusual furniture which was built by craftsmen. As a result, he leased a house in Bloomsbury so that he had room for a workshop and the family lived above the shop. In 1871, he wanted a house in the country and he bought Kenscott Manor. This had a river with a weeping willow alongside. This inspired his textile design of Willow Boughs. He later bought Kelmscott House by the river in Hammersmith. Today the William Morris Society operate from the Coach house there, where they also have a small museum. When William died in 1896, his friend Philip Webb designed his tomb. Pat Rocks gave the vote of thanks to our speaker, Fiona Rose. Fiona has her own business selling Arts & Crafts gifts and she brought along a generous selection of gifts bearing William Morris designs so we also enjoyed a shopping opportunity. Hadleigh Walkers Our October’s walk on Saturday 13th will be a 9 mile circular walk starting at Shotley Marina. We will meet at 0930 at the marina car park and follow a route along the West bank of the River Orwell to Clamp House then Broomfield Covert, Ewarton Hall Farm, down to the River Stour and along the bank back to Shotley Marine. Well, no its's not, not until February, but that doesn't mean the guys and gals of HADS can rest up, oh no.The team of dedicated and committed members are meeting every Sunday to practice for next years panto beauty and the beast. I went along to see how things are coming along. There were plenty of faces, lots of new and some old ones to. I got a quick chat with Dame Ella in between scenes and asked her a few questions. So, dame ella,you own a bakery, do tell us what's your best selling cake? I love my bakery, my cream horns are always popular, but my personal favourite is not a cake. Its' my dumplings! (said proudly) Dame Ella, you wear the most flamboyant of frocks.where would you advice the ladies of hadleigh to shop? Well, so many shops to choose from. My favourite is Girls Love Roses down Maiden Way. I always find my best outfits from The Thrift Shop you never know what bargain you might find in there. Do you know I brought a new fur scarf from there the other day, but sneezed so hard it flew off...‌ You have the voice of a angel dame ella,what would be your favourite song of all time? Dame Ella is slightly flushed and embarrassed - Singer me? Well I do like a good old sing song. I enjoy a good musical so maybe something from there. I do remember Jason Donovan, such a handsome chap, singing Joseph. Dame Ella starts singing - “Close every door to me, hide all lalalalalalala, mmmmmmmm!" Its true she has the voice of an angel, and you'll get your chance to hear it for yourself, when HADS brings you their unique version of Beauty And The Beast this February. Personally I can't wait! Doctor Franey’s Charity Some years ago, Doctor Franey founded a cottage hospital in Hadleigh and raised funds by public subscription to help maintain it. When the National Health Service came in, the hospital was closed, but its property and funds remained in private hands and the Charity Commission has used these assets to found a charity named after Doctor Franey. The Trustees of the Charity, who are all local persons, have power to help people in need living in the parishes of Hadleigh, Aldham, Kersey, Layham, Semer, Shelley and Whatfield. The Charity can also help the infirm, the sick or convalescent and those in need of a rest or change of air to meet the cost of holidays. But in every case the trustees must be able to satisfy themselves that the people whom they benefit are needy as well as deserving. A meeting of the trustees will be held shortly and people wishing to apply for help are asked to write to Mrs M. Yard sale success but it has to come to an end... On the 16th September 32 houses and 9 indoor stalls at the leisure centre had signed up to take part in the 5th Hadleigh Community Yard sale ran by Clarke's Events. The idea is that stall holders paid £6 to hold a sale in their garden or if not buy a pitch at Hadleigh pool and leisure. The money made on pitches is then used to advertise the event. Advertising was 10 x A3 boards around hadleigh. A4 & A3 posters, maps and listings, 200 x A5 flyers, Facebook noticeboard posts (around 20 different pages around suffolk area), EADT newspaper, Sudbury today newspaper, Town 102 radio, Radio Suffolk, Ipswich 24 magazine which is delivered around Suffolk and free in most supermarkets around Suffolk, Facebook free and paid advertising going out to about a 40 mile radius of Hadleigh (about £40 before the event and £25 on the day & free ads online paid advert. As well as this lots of planning happens to plot the sales, prepare the map and sellers packs, post all the packs by hand to save money plus make sure on the day the leisure centre is manned for the 9 inside stalls. As you can see a lot of hard work goes on to put this massive event on which is for the benefit of Hadleigh. This event is not for profit - as I've lost money on all these events, I do it to get people to come to our town and to put events on. On the posters I have put unofficial sales will jeopardise future events which this time has happened. I cannot stop people from having a yard sale in their gardens but it's angered me this has happened the same day as I have advertised the event and people have taken advantage of the situation especially after official stall holders have paid their way plus I have paid over £40 extra what I made to advertise the event. Due to this happening I will no longer be holding the yard sales again. I would like to thank all the stall holders who have held sales in the past, Kelvin Avis for helping with the map and printing. Not forgetting Hadleigh Pool and leisure for being supportive and letting me use their fantastic community Hall. I would just like to say for many years I have helped put events on in Hadleigh like craft fairs, carnivals not forgetting the Christmas lighting up event but I hope people understand how downhearted you can get when you put all your effort and energy in to things then it's spoilt by a few people. The yard sales brought people from Bishop Stortford, Norwich, Felixstowe and even lots of visitors said it was nice to see a town doing events like this. Rotary Club of Hadleigh A Coffee morning on the 4th September was held at Paddy and Scott’s, a great meeting place where members gather for their cappuccino, cake, chit-chat and laughter. During the hour or so that we are there, friends come and go at their leisure, resulting in a casual relaxing atmosphere enjoyed by all. The first meeting in September was Tuesday 11th, it was our club’s introduction to The George, our new venue. The food at The George is exceedingly good, everyone said they had enjoyed their meal and what a joy it is to have our own room. We can now have guest speakers, we have already reserved a variety of interesting people to give inspiring talks. Recruitment is also a big factor for our future, new members are always wanted and we welcome anyone interested in making new friends and finding ways of service, both locally and globally. To discuss joining The Rotary Club of Hadleigh just contact our club, details below. Sunday September 16th was Hadleigh’s 5th Community Wide Yard Sale. We operated a stall of our own raising funds for Rotary in The Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre. Rotarians managed the stall between 9.00 am and 2.00 pm. Here we were able to meet many Hadleigh residents, it was a great opportunity to hand out a Rotary leaflet or two and spend some time discussing our club. 27th September was our second meeting of the month and we welcomed PCSO Julia Bignell from Hadleigh Police Station as our guest speaker. We enjoyed listening to her talk and answering our questions. The Rotary Club of Hadleigh meets twice a month at lunchtimes in Hadleigh and if you would like the opportunity to serve your local community and enjoy good company you would be most welcome to attend a meeting to find out what we do. Do you find it hard to forgive? Someone has said that ‘holding a grudge is like holding a hot coal; it will keep burning you until you let it go’. Ouch! That saying is so true, for if we hold onto a grudge it inevitably leads to bitterness and that bitterness can consume us and eat us away. I know too many people that haven’t spoken to someone for years and some of those are unable to even remember what led them to be like this. Imagine that you have lived the last three years of your life going around ‘doing good’? You have fed thousands of people, supported the vulnerable and the ostracised, given sight to the blind, healed people from leprosy and paralysis, even raised some from the dead! But now you find yourself being executed in public. It all seems so unfair, yet from that place of execution came words from One who is the Son of God, Jesus: ‘Father forgive them, for they do not know that they are doing.’ It is incredible that Jesus had the love and the grace to say such a thing to those executioners that were watching Him die. Can we forgive as Jesus forgave? When we realise how much we have been forgiven it will help. The Bible puts it like this: ‘For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.’ 2 Corinthians 5: 21 As Jesus died, a transaction was being made, the guilty were being forgiven by the Guiltless, the imperfect were being forgiven by the Perfect One. Each of us needs to look to Jesus for forgiveness from the wrong things that we have done in our lives and when we receive that forgiveness we will be helped by Jesus to live thankful lives that forgive those around us. Pilates @ Hadleigh Physiotherapy Why Pilates for Teenagers? Teenage bodies undergo daily stresses from changes in posture and growing, to the demands of school, study and sport. We can all remember the feeling of a heavy school bag or the ache of muscles after a match. The feeling of strength and power that comes from using our muscles correctly can be achieved by introducing a child to the principles of Pilates. From an early age they can learn to develop their core stability and improve neuromuscular control, preventing those aches and pains or giving an advantage on the playing field now and long term. Hadleigh Physiotherapy is pleased to offer a Teens Pilates Class run by a Chartered Physiotherapist. The class is specifically designed to meet the needs of both non-sporty teens and the competitive teenage athlete. A teenage Pilates class comprises of safe exercises to help increase flexibility and coordination, while improving strength, balance and performance in sport. Pilates can help the individual gain awareness of their body, understand how it works and develop good posture, leading to greater self-esteem. Our Teens class runs on a Tuesday at 4.15 pm, for 45 minutes. Teens are also welcome to join our general class timetable at a discounted rate. Alternatively, 1:1 or 2:1 sessions are available. Please note Parental or Guardian consent is required. Pilates for Pregnant and Postnatal Women We are delighted to now offer a specialist ”Bumps and Babies” Pilates class for pregnant and postnatal women. This class meets the specific needs of women at any stage in the childbearing year. Babies are welcome to attend alongside mums (although no creche facilities are provided). Pregnant and postnatal women are particularly at risk of back and pelvic pain, and pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, as a result of the changes undergone during pregnancy. Pilates is ideally placed to address these changes, and to prevent or ease any aches and pains, or pelvic floor issues experienced. Missing Cat Hadrian Please Help Us Find Him! Hadrian went missing on the 18th August 2018 from IP7. He is a very friendly cat and has never ventured far from home which is why were worried and missing him terribly. He is Black/Mottled Brown 4yrs old slim build. He is neutered and microchipped. He could be locked in a garage or a shed it is possible that he has got into a car and gone on a road trip! I know cats wonder and if he has decided to stay with you for a while please pick up the phone and call me or the local vets in Hadleigh high street. He could fall ill as he has to be fed on special food. One of his antics is to climb on the roof and come in via the bedroom windows so if you see a Black Cat on a hot tin roof! He could be ours. You may have read in the press recently that three police forces are to start testing the eyesight of drivers they stop. The College of Optometrists welcome these plans and states, "People should have their eyes tested regularly by an optometrist to check they can see clearly and are safe to drive, and to ensure that any eye diseases they may have can be caught early so they are less likely to lose their sight.� Car drivers (group 1) must be able to read a car number plate from 20 meters. You also need to be able read the 6/12 line of letters on an optometrists Snellen chart using both eyes together. If spectacles are required for distance, specially designed Rodenstock ‘Road’ lenses are available from D J Dunstone to optimise vision for the dynamic task of driving. These are available in single vision distance or varifocal form and perform just as well in every other way. You should see your optometrist who will be able to tell you if you need a new spectacle prescription, whether you need to be referred to an ophthalmologist (eye doctor), or if you have a condition that should be declared to the DVLA. Curried Cauliflower Salad Salad Ingredients 1 cauliflower, 2 eating apples, 2 old carrots, 75g/3oz sultanas Ingredients for dressing 1 tablespoon olive oil 1bunch (around 10) spring onions or the equivalent in baby leeks, 2 level teaspoons hot Madras curry powder 6 level tablespoons mayonnaise, The juice & zest of 1 lemon or lime Salt & freshly ground pepper Method 1. Prepare the dressing as follows: a. Finely slice the onions/leeks & fry in the oil until starting to colour b. Stir in the curry powder & cook on a gentle heat for 1-2 minutes c. Remove the pan from the heat and allow to cool to lukewarm d. Stir in the mayonnaise together with the zest & juice of the lemon/lime e. Season to taste with salt & pepper 2. Cut the cauliflower into bite-sized florets and plunge into a pan of boiling water; blanch for 2 minutes, drain in a colander & flush under running water; drain again & place in a large bowl. 3. Peel the carrots & grate coarsely 4. Core the apples but don’t peel them; dice into 10-12mm pieces 5. Fold the carrots, diced apple & sultanas into the cauliflower 6. Add the dressing & turn gently with a fork until the mix is evenly coated 7. Transfer the salad to a serving bowl sized just enough to hold it; cover tightly with cling film & refrigerate for at least 2 hours; remove from refrigerator 10 minutes before serving. Serves 6-8 as a side dish.

Over age 55 – Retiring soon?
Issue 48 (October – November 2018) This issue has a miscellany of articles. Nigel Crisp of Hadleigh reminds us of The Hadleigh Historian The Hadleigh Historian Threadneedle Street School, this time with Issue 48 October - November 2018 Price ÂŁ3 a picture feature in the occasional series ‘Lost buildings’; while Michael Ayden of Shotley Gate retells stories of his criminal ancestors, the Eighteen family of Hadleigh, one of whom was transported to Van Dieman’s Land. Extracts from Audrey Bennett’s scrap books concentrate on the 1990’s, not so long ago but do you remember Hadleigh Amateur Dramatic Society’s production of Rasputin; a cold January morning when the town woke up full of smoke and High Street was full of fire engines; and I expect Joyce Willis will remember every minute of her ordination at Bury St Edmunds when she was one of 22 women who had waited so long to become priests in the Church of England. Part 2 of the story of Thomas Goad is told concerning his life as Hadleigh rector from 1618 until his death in 1638. He went about embellishing his home and a very austere St Mary’s but, unfortunately, all is now gone except the mural in the Deanery tower, which depicts the church interior nearly 400 years ago (an excellent reproduction can be purchased as a post-card in St Mary’s. His paintings and quaint inscriptions were described by a contemporary as ‘an odd fancy’. The story of No. 28 George Street has been traced through a variety of historical documents back to the early years of the 15th century when this was the home of John Holt, a well-to-do merchant. The building retained the name Holts from then until the late 19th century when two spinster sisters re-named it Yalden. Like many properties in the older part of town, the building not only provided living quarters but also working spaces. In the 17th century, raw materials and finished products of the woollen-cloth industry were stored here and during the 19th century, there was a working malt house on site. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk In September I was honoured to be appointed to a new role, as PPS to the Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Hunt. A PPS (Parliamentary Private Secretary) is the link between the Secretary of State and MPs from all parties. It is a particular privilege to be part of the Foreign Office team given the department’s role of advancing our national interest around the world. On the majority of foreign policy issues there tends to be a consensus, with little dispute on the way our relations should proceed in most countries, and MPs tend to unite when confronted with terrible humanitarian crises overseas, such as in Syria or Rakhine state, Burma. But of course, there are many more controversial issues: notably Brexit, but also the long-running Palestinian question, and how we respond to President Trump and Russian aggression. Keeping Ministers aware of the direction that opinion is forming on the full gamut of issues is a key responsibility of a PPS. For example, at the time of writing we have encouraging signs in Syria with Turkey and Russia seemingly agreeing a ‘buffer zone’ to protect the remaining rebel enclave of Idlib. Were this agreement to break down, the international temperature would rise – and so would concern in the House. This would be particularly so if chemical weapons were deployed again. Let us hope such further horror can be avoided. Whilst all of the issues facing the Foreign and Commonwealth Office ultimately affect the people of South Suffolk, I am confident that my new role will not in any way diminish my ability to campaign on the home front. A particular priority at present is the rural economy, given that the Agriculture Bill comes before the House in October, promising a new era for how we subsidise and support our farmers. My stance has always been that we should maintain an equivalent version of the current system until a better one is in place. Quite simply, whether at home or abroad, food production or foreign affairs, we need to apply good old fashioned common sense and resist the temptation of divisive ideology.

Mother, known to you as Maggie, will be awarded an Honorary Fellowship at the University of Suffolk later this month in recognition of her notable contributions to the community. I cannot tell you how proud and delighted we all feel about this well earned and deserved acknowledgement. Of course the good lady herself will have none of it, insisting she is merely a “facilitator” and will accept said accolade on behalf of the volunteers, without whom there would be no SESAW. Now back to the animals awaiting new homes, particularly a little puss called Marti who has been with us for six months. She arrived pregnant but the kittens are all weaned and she is ready for an adult only home where she would be the only cat. One Year into ELSA! Last year Hadleigh Community Primary sent one of their Learning Support Assistants (Shelley Kinnaird) on an ELSA course (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant). The course is run by Educational Psychologists and is aimed at supporting children with anxiety, anger, communication and friendship difficulties, bereavement and understanding emotions. It was only made possible to attend the course due to the immense generosity of the Ann Beaumont Trust who agreed to fund it. Therefore, one year on, Hadleigh Community Primary invited two members (Mr James Wilding and Mrs Lesley Turner) of the trust to visit the school as a way of saying a huge thank you and to show them the progress made following the course. The introduction of ELSA into the school has proved popular with both parents and children. It has allowed numerous children to work through their problems and worries, understand how to express their emotions and recognise them in others and learn coping and calming strategies when angry. We hope to continue this work as it progresses into the next academic year. Thank you Ann Beaumont Trust. EYFS – Nursery We are very excited to be able to offer additional Forest School sessions in our school woods for our Nursery children this year. Our ‘Squirrel’ and ‘Badger’ groups are alternating their time between our existing Nursery and our woods, where they will be experiencing nature throughout the year. We have put a marquee up in case we need to shelter from the weather and will very soon be building a permanent log cabin. The children are really enjoying exploring the woods and creating their own imaginary play and games. We are also pleased to say that snack time has been extremely popular and children are excited to try new foods that have been cooked down in the woods. Music The children have made an excellent start in their weekly class music lessons and are learning to focus on the interrelated dimensions of music with singing, instrumental work, improvisation and composition. Extra music tuition is again very popular with three large recorder groups, violins, flutes, clarinets, performance opportunities and a strong choir from Years 4 to 6. All children in KS2 will continue with ukulele and the Year 3 children are very excited about their first lesson.

claire@fitframephysio.com Hadleigh and District Probus Club’s Summer Outing was a visit on the 21st August 2018 to Wattisham Station Heritage museum within Wattisham Airfield, now an Army Base. The museum, housed in the original Wattisham Station Church, has a complete history of the airfield from its construction in the late 1930’s up to the present day. Probus members and their guests were greeted with a fascinating talk from Margaret Fisher whose grandfather and his brother owned the farms whose land was taken over to build the airfield between 1936 and the 1940s as it expanded during the Second World War, starting with the surveyors who arrived in 1936 when the Government realised it need more airfields, and who, while designing the layout of the airfield, stayed in her grandfather’s farmhouse, a building which was demolished when the airfield was built. This is all set out in detail in Margaret’s book, ‘Memorabilia’, covering the development of the airfield up to 1943 and its effect on her farming family (cost £20 from the Idler Book Shop). We were then escorted round the airfield to a Cold War Hardened Aircraft Shelter to see a number of historic aircraft associated with the Airfield that the museum’s volunteers are preserving and restoring, including a Black Arrows Display Team Hawker Hunter and a Phantom FGR2. After the visit we retired for lunch in the Peacock Inn at Chelsworth. On the first Wednesday in August we again held the Hadleigh and District Probus Ladies’ Annual Lunch at the Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa in the Garden Room overlooking their golf courses. Unlike last year when it rained, we started by sitting outside on the veranda before the meal, enjoying the lovely hot sunny day. Apart from these special meetings to which ladies and friends are invited, Hadleigh and District Probus mens’ club meets for lunch on the third Wednesday of each month in the rear bar of ‘The George’ in Hadleigh. Suffolk Rockets Netball Club The Netball season is now up and running, its all very exciting at Suffolk Rockets, we go into our 2nd season with a lot of new members as well as starting our new 'High 5' club! 'High 5' netball is a modified version of the game which is played with 5 players on each team instead of 7, the rules are more relaxed and the aim is to get players use to the basic principles of netball - passing, catching, moving and shooting, and also with some very basic defending. 'High 5' Netball is aimed at school years 5 & 6. At our first training session of the new season we started our first 'High 5' club, we had 10 girls attend and we have had more interest since, the session was so much fun with the girls just getting use to the rules before having a go at some match play. Because of the enthusiasm and participation we have decided to enter a 'High 5' team into the Colchester League which starts in November, this is a huge step forward for the club as it means we are introducing Netball to younger girls who we hope will stay with us for many seasons to come! On Monday 10th September our Head Coach visited Hadleigh Community Primary School to chat all things Netball with Gavin Peters, Head of Sport. This was a fantastic visit and it was so refreshing to hear how much the school supports participating in a range of different sports, we hope to work in partnership with the school to build on its Netball. We had our first training session of the season on the 12th September, we had such an amazing response with over 40 juniors and 23 adults/back to netballers, this is a huge difference to our first sessions back in September 2017 where we had 12 juniors and 8 adults.....the word is spreading! We always invite new members however our Junior club is at full capacity but we do encourage any juniors that are interested to email us to put their name on a waiting list as we may expand depending on coaches and courts. We always have space for new adult players and we start from 'Back to Netball' standard so we cater for everyone, no need to book just turn up Wednesday evenings, hadleigh high school 8-9.30pm £4.50 (term time only). On Sunday 9th September our two adult teams played in the Colchester league pre season Tournament, this was a fantastic day with some really great netball on show. Our ladies really enjoyed it, although slightly tired and warm! Suffolk Solar came 9th and Suffolk Stars came 4th. Our adult teams also started their first competitive winter league on 17th September, both our teams play in the Colchester league on Monday nights at the Gilberd school. Neither team could get a win in their first games but both showed big improvements and scored a lot of goals, Stars managed to get over half goals so got a point on the board! Art Club Activities In October We are always delighted to meet new-comers to the Art Club, We meet on Tuesday afternoons between 2 o’clock and 4 in the Seminar Room of Hadleigh Library. The programme for October is varied and has a certain rustic air about it. October 2 we’ll be engaged in drawing grasses and reeds. Samples of this flora should be brought along so that studies can be made. October 9; it will be tricky to fill the seminar room with this week’s subject, but photographs of farm machinery…tractors, ploughs etc. will have to suffice. On October 16 you can bring along teazles, dried flowerheads or other ornamental flowers. See what you can find that will fill the bill. On Tuesday October 23 we again must refer to photographs or maybe sketches made before the meeting. Get out your paints, the yellow ochre, the burnt sienna, Indian red, cadmium orange in order to paint a lush woodland scene. Bring along some leaves as a reminder of the rich Autumn tints. Last meeting of the month October 30 is devoted to a demonstration by Michele Webber the subject is to be “Watercolour Flowers.”

Now to the outside situation: as you all know, my friends the live ponies live out. This means they stay in their fields when they are not being worked. Trips to the stables are for mealtimes and resting between jobs. So Lyn has to manage the fields very carefully to keep 10 live horses and ponies clean and fit. She would love to have more help with grass management from any one who fancies supporting us in this way. Would you be willing, if you live in Hadleigh perhaps, or somewhere equally nearby, to sign up to the maintenance team and help in our fields? None of our volunteers has to be here every day of the week but we do ask for a certain level of commitment on the maintenance team. It won’t all be manual labour but most of the team do happen to be men!

In September six new riders joined us, and others on the waiting list are about to be incorporated into our schedule. Babs and I are back in work, my repairs were finally done by Margaret and Rob themselves, under remote surveillance from the engineers. Modern technology has brought us even more rewards: clever people at AV Unit Electronics designed and installed the screen in front of my muzzle (so it’s in front of my riders’ faces too) on which they have been viewing themselves as they ride. Great for correcting posture, but as if that was not enough fun, AV Unit have fixed it to play a film of hacking out in the open country complete with changes of pace: walk, trot and canter! Since my buttons and very sensitive side panels can alter my paces, all we have to do is get synchronised and my riders will have a virtual tour of the Brett vale. So to Adam Clark, Managing Director of AV Unit, and Jonathan Kelly, the inventors and installers, a huge thank you for this great piece of IT, we love it. More thanks go to our friends in Probus who, after Jan and Margaret had given a talk about the Centre to them on September 5th, collected up £205 for us. That was brilliant. The talks now have film to illustrate what we do, and Mary has joined the team to work the techy stuff and make sure the message gets across nice and clearly. We love our fund raisers, and I like to thank them here but, as you know, it’s not all about the money! Here’s a photo of a Friday afternoon ride in full swing, Edward and Annie looking very happy to be back on board their ponies, and the volunteers looking happy with the lovely new surface in the arena.

Hadleigh Choral Society Autumn Concert You have never heard any thing less like a ‘heavenly host’ than Hadleigh Choral Society on it’s first night back rehearsing after the summer break! But that is what we are supposed to be representing in our latest choral offering, Haydn’s The Creation. Haydn bases this joyful oratorio on the story of the creation of the world as told in the book of Genesis and Milton’s Paradise Lost. The story is told by the three soloists, who are the archangels Raphael, Uriel, and Gabriel, whilst the choir takes the role of the heavenly host praising God and the wonderful, newly-created world. We are singing the work in English rather than the more usual German, which means that we can fully understand the complexities of the text which describes all the details of creation from ‘Let there be Light’, to fields and flowers, fishes and fowls, all living creatures, and finally Adam and Eve. We have three highly talented young soloists and The Colchester Symphony Orchestra booked for 7.30pm on Saturday, 24th November in St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh. With uplifting choruses and beautiful melodic arias for the soloists this oratorio is a delight to listen to, and Hadleigh Choral intends to give a sparkling, joyous and heavenly performance of this wonderful work! There is help At this time of the year a lot of people are starting to feel the difficulties of suffering with SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder. Although it has most likely been prevalent for a long time, it is only in recent years it has become more widely discussed. The condition is one which is felt to a greater or lesser extent by many people, whereby they feel negative emotions; sadness, anxiety; depression even, as the days become shorter and darker as we head into the winter months. We are getting better at talking about many aspects of mental health difficulties whether it’s something we, ourselves, are dealing with or perhaps things that have become a problem for someone close to us. But despite this, many people still feel uninformed or unable to talk out loud to someone about what is happening with them. Often there is a feeling of isolation that accompanies those struggling, which in turn can make things seem worse still. Local libraries are increasingly becoming one of the few places where anyone can go and feel safe, unjudged and are not rushed to make a purchase and then get out. They are a link to the wider community and whether someone chooses to engage with other patrons or one of the activities that take place there, or not, they are places that can reduce feelings of isolation. What a lot of people don’t know, is that your local library has a range of selfhelp books available to borrow, many of which can be recommended by general practitioners to read to get valuable information and guidance. If you are struggling with any form of mental health issues, do talk to your GP and see if there is a title they would recommend borrowing from us or have a look at what we have that may feel relevant to you, to then speak to a professional about. If we don’t have it on the shelf, any library staff member would be happy to see if we have what you need available within the Suffolk Library system and order it in for you. Fourth Annual Gayford Flyer Sportive
Hadleigh Cycling Club’s fourth annual sportive attracted 174 riders to the town on 2nd September. The sportive is named “The Gayford Flyer” in recognition of the town’s world record breaking aviator, Oswald Gayford. Mike Motteram, Chair of the Club said, “It was terrific to see so many riders, especially those that had never attempted 60 miles before. The feedback has been very positive. “The Flyer is a real team effort and we couldn’t have carried it off without 30 volunteers and that’s not counting the cake bakers.” Mike also thanked the Flyer’s sponsors - The George, Sunny Day Cycleworks, The East of England Co-op, Crockatt Garage, The Pedal House and Rattlesden Gliding Club. The Club will donate from the Flyer receipts to local rider, Paul Spraggons for his chosen charity, Prostate Cancer UK. Paul raised £14000 last year in memory of his father and also his own personal battle with the disease. Next year, he is riding the first stage of the 2019 Tour de France in Belgium. As our current members have seen we have been working hard over the Summer Holidays to give the Playstation a much needed facelift. Above the Parapet County Council Report - Cllr Mick Fraser The No 90 Bus Service - In May’s HCN I wrote about the role Hadleigh Community Transport Group plays in connecting the Town to other Babergh District communities and the various transport services they provide, including the number 90 bus service to and from Ipswich in the evenings, Sundays and Bank Holidays. The contract for this particular route ended on 30th September 2018 and, because Suffolk County Council (SCC) has to continue to identify budgetary savings from across all departments, potentially funding for this service might be discontinued. The ending of the support subsidy for the No 90 Bus at this time will have undoubtedly cause some hardship, at short notice for those who rely on this service for work purposes in Ipswich and elsewhere, and it could further isolate many of us from the amenities provided in Ipswich. I have spoken with the SCC Deputy Leader, Cllr Mary Evans who holds the portfolio for transport, to appeal for further funding for this service so that it might be retained at least for the short-term until the end of the year. This would and allow time for regular users to make alternative travel arrangements. At the time of writing, no decision has been made on the future of this service, but I will continue to campaign for its continued survival. Since 2012 there has been no noticeable increase in passenger numbers and this route has averaged less than 8 passengers per journey. We need to use this bus service more to show that this route is viable, warranting continued funding support from SCC. The Gayford Flyer Cyclo-Sportive– I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Mike Mottram, and everyone of Hadleigh Cycling Club who helped stage this year’s ‘Gayford Flyer’ cyclo-sportive. It was a splendid event which attracted 174 riders to the town and its success was no doubt down to the volunteers, cake bakers and sponsors who gave their support, time and facilities for hosting this event. Suffolk County Council is keen to encourage people to cycle more often and having well organized events like this one goes a long way in fostering a preferable alternative to driving and gives us a great foundation on which to build. Another year of outstanding results for Suffolk students - I would like to congratulate all our young people who have recently completed their GCSE at Hadleigh High School and now look forward to further education, training or employment. GCSE statistics from Suffolk schools, released on 23rd August, show that more students in Suffolk have achieved expected levels of GCSE attainment in English and maths this year. More than 7,000 students in Suffolk were entered for GCSE results. Results collated from around 80% of schools in Suffolk, 67% of students achieved a grade 4 and above in English and maths this year. The figures state 2% more students have achieved the expected standard for English and maths, compared with last year. Once again Suffolk students have performed well at A-Level with the number of A*-E grades awarded above the national average. Almost 3,000 pupils were entered for A-levels in Suffolk and, early the figures show that 98.1% of Alevels taken in the county have been awarded an A*- E grade, compared with 97.6% nationally. Suffolk maintains its position and continues to be above the national average, while the national figure shows a decrease of 0.3%. There has been a 3% increase in Suffolk students achieving the top grades of A* or A. Suffolk Bereavement Support The Meaning Of Feelings Understanding feelings and why we feel the way that we do is fundamental to anyone who is bereaved. Feelings are part of us and tell us what is happening to us. If we try to ignore them it will stop us knowing fully who we are and what it important to us. Commonly, we have learnt from childhood onwards to keep a ‘stiff upper lip’ and this can lead us to blocking feelings that we really need to express. Sadness, is a really helpful emotion and can help to remind us what matters to us and what gives our life meaning. If we allow ourselves to express our sadness it can also help us to adjust. In contrast, cutting off feelings can be a threat to both our physical and mental wellbeing. Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday September 10th 2018: The speaker we had booked for this month was unable to come at the last minute so we all had a trip to north Cyprus instead, courtesy of Bill Haldane chairman of Suffolk Orchid Society. He shared with us his findings from an horticultural group visit to this island. As very few pesticides are used there a wide range of plants can be found growing in the wild, gladioli, irises, wild tulips, mandrakes, fennel and, of course, orchids. These plants will colonise an area given the opportunity and we were shown many examples of this, particularly the bee orchid which is related to our own native variety. Bill brought along three orchids from home which he grows in a specialist orchid house, one of these was perfumed which is apparently unusual for these plants, it was a good opportunity to get a close up view of these exotic specimens. The talk was followed by a question and answer session where a few growing problems were addressed. The evening was very well attended with plenty of people to vote in the competition as well as a good number of entries, the winner was Fiona with her 'five runner beans on a plate'. Our next get together on Friday October 12th 2018: We're off on our travels again this month to Furzeland farm, Wickham Bishops near Maldon. Some time ago the owner John Barker came to talk to the club about his forest garden and we are looking forward to seeing it first hand. Down to Earth ...with Dave The success stories of this year have to be the two types of squash grown, with the butternut and winter ones producing more than ever before. The greenhouse shelving looks like a greengrocers, with dozens of them lined up to ripen ready for storing and use well into the winter. The other success has been the bumper crop of apples on my two little trees on the allotment. What the apples lack in size they make up for in sweetness. One problem has been that due to the weight of fruit one very large branch has completely split and broken away requiring emergency attention with a pruning saw. Hopefully no permanent damage has been done to the tree. The large wound is just left to heal naturally with nothing painted onto it, I must make sure to thin out the baby fruits even more drastically next year. After a slow start the various beans are cropping surprisingly well, this must be due to the rain and warmth left in the soil, the more you pick them the more they will grow. Over the hot dry ssummer the grass has taken a bit of a beating, now is a good time to give it some TLC. First dig out any big weeds, scarify it, paying particular particular attention to any bald areas. If possible make holes in the lawn with a special hollow tined tool or use a garden fork pushed into the grass every couple of inches and levered backwards, this loosens up the soil. Any really bald areas can then be lightly reseeded, I like to use a mixture of homemade compost, sharp sand and tough wearing lawn seed. This is mixed up in a bucket, broadcast and and gently brushed into the holes previously made, with the warmth in the soil the seed should germinate in a few days. If you use any lawn fertiliser make sure it is an autumn one and avoid nitrogenrich summer lawn feed as at this time of year this would promote soft growth vulnerable to winter damage. If you can find any spring green or other brassica plants and you have a bit of space, pop a few in. They will get away quickly with the soil being so warm. I was recently given a quantity of wood chips left from where an old tree stump had been been ground out. These are very slow to break down and do not immediately provide nutrients or improve the soil structure in the same way as compost does, even after a year or more they will still be rotting down. If dug into the soil they can use up nitrogen that could otherwise be feeding the plants, this is known as nitrogen robbery. They can however be used as a mulch around mature trees, making sure they do not touch the trunk. I will however mix them a little at a time into my composts on the allotment. Problem solved. Help needed at Orchard Barn with Bottle and Daub project You’ve probably heard of a traditional building material called Wattle and Daub, but have you come across Bottle and Daub - its 21st century cousin? Here at Orchard Barn we delight in recycling ideas and materials. Volunteers have just made a panel (in between oak timber frame) that comprises of clay-rich subsoil and straw (daub) and cut down bottles. It has the advantage of letting the light in, bringing in colour and using free locally available materials. The flip side is that it takes patience to cut the bottles. It also takes time to fit the cut bottles into the daub (and there is an art to making and using earth as a building material). However the end result is both environmentally sound and beautiful. It’s a bit like a stained glass window but using upcycled earth as the ‘glue’. With several more panels ahead of us we were wondering if any readers might like to help? The meetings are attended by members of the Town Council, local groups and organisations and a representative from Babergh & Mid Suffolk Council (who prepares formal minutes of the meeting). Summary report of the meeting held on 3 September 2018, chaired by Anita Young:The Minutes of the meeting of 13 August 2018 were approved, subject to the following amendments: The new Rector of Hadleigh, Layham & Shelley, The Reverend Jo Delfgou, will move into the Deanery in November and formally take up his role after being instituted and inducted in 3 December 2018. Rolf Beggerow, together with the Rugby Club and others, formed the Hadleigh Sports Association which has drafted a Hadleigh Sporting Community Status and Plan. This initiative was born largely from the lack of involvement in, and progress of, a Neighbourhood Plan. The exhibition in place over the National Heritage weekend was “The Memories of Cedric Morris Exhibition” and was not an art exhibition. Guest Speakers: Barbara Boyd Hadleigh Thrift Shop, Ian Wilson Hadleigh Library and Joy Moran Hadleigh Community Transport. Barbara Boyd expressed her gratitude to all who support the Hadleigh Thrift Shop in all ways. Next year it will be 20 years since the shop was established and she wants to celebrate all that has been achieved with the people of Hadleigh. She would like to hear from you if you have any ideas. Barbara visited Albania in 1996 and was so moved by the plight and poverty of people she met there that she was inspired to start fundraising when she returned to the UK. She travelled regularly to Albania to visit and sponsor various projects as funds grew. Families previously living in shacks have been funded to move into small houses and flats, buildings have been renovated to become fit for purpose schools and she has been able to sponsor individuals to come to the UK for education opportunities. Communities have been supported into becoming more self-sufficient and children assisted through school, now attending universities. Barbara’s heart is clearly with the Albanian families she has come to know. The Hadleigh Thrift Shop continues to thrive and support a great many causes and projects locally, as well as equipment for Ipswich Hospital. Hadleigh Thrift Shop is sponsoring The Big Gospel Sing on 29 September 2018 for the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance and continues to sponsor The Hadleigh Library. Hadleigh Library - Ian Wilson Ian advised that in 2012 Suffolk County Council divested themselves of the libraries and set up an Industrial Society to fulfil their statutory duty. Due to an Act in 1963, the Industrial Society pays for the salaries of library staff, the buildings’ rent and maintenance and the purchase of books. Anything else required is considered a local issue and must be funded locally. Over the past five years funding has dropped by 40%. The library is still perceived by the majority as being part of Suffolk County Council but this is not the case. An independent Friends Group was set up to save the libraries from closure and raise funds. Books are funded but in smaller numbers and things that need to be funded locally, i.e. magazines and newspapers, are slowly disappearing. The Friends Group is very active in promoting the library and holding events to raise money. Their current major project is replacing static shelves to mobile shelving to make it possible to open up a Cultural Cinema downstairs for showing films of ballet and opera etc. This is not intended to compete with the Ansell Centre. The Friends Group is considering looking into changing the name to The Hadleigh Community Library which would help in its perception as being a community facility and not owned by Suffolk County Council. This could help with fundraising. Our Library needs more Friends; volunteers for particular projects as well as regular coffee/tea makers and general helpers at events.

Hadleigh Community Transport - Joy Moran Joy said they have run the Connecting Communities contract for the last two years. There is now a threat from the Suffolk County Council that the No. 90 service will be stopped at the end of September. This is the evening, weekend and bank holiday service. Stopping this service will cause untold inconvenience to many. They are currently conducting an on-bus survey, with on-board CCTV back up, to ascertain who uses the service and when, so that they can send a realistic user report for the Cabinet Meeting to be held on 17 September, where its fate will be decided. This will affect 15 employees and all users. The cost to run this service is £38k per annum. Joy will inform the Steering Group after the Cabinet’s decision and will try and get a statement into the Hadleigh Community News. Visit Hadleigh – Stuart Service reported that McCarthy & Stone have agreed to a certain amount of funding for the website. The latest You Tube video, ‘Town Tours’ is now live. Jane Snowdon informed the meeting they are trialling a visitor picture quiz which can be downloaded. Tidy Town: There is a noticeable reduction in litter generally, but an increase in fly-tipping; the dumping of bags of rubbish and other items of all descriptions! Volunteers have recently been clearing fly-tipping from the layby near Wolves Wood, which is shocking. Photographs will be posted on Facebook: Our Tidy Town – Hadleigh Suffolk. Town Council: Cllr Byrne stated it was business as usual. Babergh District Council: District Cllrs Campbell and Sian Dawson were in attendance at the meeting. They advised that a seat for the Market Place had not yet been ordered, they brought illustrations of seats and wanted approval from the Steering Group. Cllr Dawson said she had carried out a survey in the Market Place as to the kind of seat people would like. The Chair advised that members of the Steering Group had previously been shown various types of seating and given an opportunity to comment, however, it was protocol that Babergh DC should liaise with Hadleigh Town Council for final approval of any seat. Babergh District Council had consulted Hadleigh Town Council in early 2017 and a seat agreed upon, which Babergh DC promised would be installed before Easter 2017 and we are still waiting! Hadleigh Legacy Group: There are two new community gardeners. The Magdalen Road bed has been cleared ready for more planting in the Autumn. The George Street poppies are blooming and work is continuing on the information boards for the Iris beds. Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group: Daily clinics will be held for flu vaccinations during the first week of October: Monday to Friday 9-12am and 2:30-5:30pm. The call board audio notification being made louder was discussed and ways are being looked at to achieve this without also raising the volume of the info-advertisements. It was reiterated that the Pharmacy 2U is nothing to do with the NHS (despite the NHS logo being used). People should be aware that by using this service, which has proven to be unreliable, one would be removing business from our own community pharmacies. All local pharmacies are able to deliver if required. Any Other business: Cllr Jane Haylock proposed grateful thanks to Stuart Service for organising the hanging baskets in the High Street, which are exceptional. Their maintenance and watering has ensured a long lasting grand display and this will be undertaken again next year. The Steering Group wish to thank the resident on the Ipswich Road, just off the roundabout into Hadleigh on the 1071, who has taken the trouble to plant a wildflower garden on the grass strip in front of the recessed houses. HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL Report of the Meeting of the Council held on the 16th August 2018 Present: Councillors: Matthews (Town Mayor), Angland, Byrne, Cook, Free, Haines, Haylock, Knock, Loftus, Monks, Schleip, Shearly-Sanders, Sheldrick and Wiltshire In attendance: Babergh District Councillors Dr. Dawson and Grandon and 6 members of the public, Mrs. T. Lloynds, South Suffolk Leisure, and Mr. W. Smith, Chief Executive of the Joint Trust. The Mayor welcomed Councillors Andrew Knock and Brian Loftus to the Town Council. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies were received from Councillor Fraser. This apology was accepted. DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST Councillors Free and Sheldrick declared a nonpecuniary interest in the Finance & Personnel Committee Report – as they are on the executive for Hadleigh Dementia Alliance Association. MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Council held on the 19th July 2018, subject to the following change: Hadleigh Skatepark – the third paragraph to read: Councillor Angland made a specific request to Mr. Talbot etc. Town Poll – 65% should read 62% were taken as read and confirmed and signed. MATTERS ARISING Mayor’s Communications. Councillor Haylock provided a statement regarding comments made on Facebook which were incorrect and had resulted in her husband and a member of staff’s husband being wrongly accused of writing the letter that had been read out. If the letter had been written by either of these gentlemen then the Councillor/member of staff would have had to leave the room. She also felt that it was a great shame that the author of the article on facebook had not had the decency to wait for the correct information to have been provided by the office. Matters Arising. Councillor Shearly-Sanders advised that he knew the webpage was being updated but it was the link to the Neighbourhood Plan webpage he was referring to. There is no information on the Neighbourhood Plan webpage. He was advised that this had just been unpublished and the running of the webpage would be dealt with by Councillor Haines as she progressed the Neighbourhood Plan. HADLEIGH SWIMMING POOL At this point a presentation was made regarding the progress on the new swimming pool and the South Suffolk Leisure merge with Abbeycroft. POLICE The Clerk reported that the costings for funding a PCSO had been received. It was recommended to budget £34,000 per annum with a commitment to a two year service level agreement and an additional £3,300 if a vehicle was required. A request was made to log your intention by the 20th August. It was agreed that a letter be sent asking if there could be a service level agreement specifically for cover in Hadleigh and advising that no decision could be made by the closing date as this would need to be a budget decision. Councillors had been provided with the response received on behalf of Tim Passmore. REPORTS OF THE COUNTY & DISTRICT COUNCILLORS Councillor Campbell had tendered her apologies. Written reports had been received from Babergh District Councillors Dr. Dawson and Grandon. Councillor Dr. Dawson answered questions on the new bridge that had been put in place as part of the McCarthy Stone development and her concerns regarding the steps and deviations from the original specifications. naming the streets for the development and was advised that a request should be made to Hadleigh Town Council for recommendations. Councillor Grandon advised that the Market Place seat had been ordered and this was in line with the agreement made by the Steering Group. She also advised on the proposal to stop the No. 90 Bus Service by Suffolk County Council. It was agreed that the Mayor would write a letter to Suffolk County Council on behalf of Hadleigh Town Council as to how the loss of this bus service would affect the town and its residents. The Clerk was asked to put the Community Transport Questionnaire on the Town Council’s Facebook Page. Councillor Grandon urged members to nominate Stars of Babergh and Mid-suffolk – the details of which were in her report. Councillor Knock raised concerns over an area in Hadleigh and was advised to speak to Councillor Dr. Dawson as it was in her ward. MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Clerk reported: i) Letter from the Local Government Boundary Commission and the final recommendations ii) A thank you letter from Hadleigh Skatepark Fundraising Trust for the financial support being provided by Hadleigh Town Council. iii) An e.mail from St. Mary’s Church advising that as of the 3rd December 2018 The Rev’d Jo Delfgou would be taking up the post of Rector to Hadleigh, Layham and Shelley Benefice. QUESTIONS RAISED BY MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC The following question was read out: Can someone explain why it is not possible to have a hearing loop in the Dining Room. If it is truly not possible will you look at alternative accessible locations in Hadleigh? The Clerk advised that she had tried to explain why this was not possible but had asked the Company to provide the explanation in writing. This had not been received due to staff holidays. Once an answer was received it could be forwarded on. Regarding looking into alternative accessible locations the Clerk was asked to find out if any of the bookable rooms in the town had hearing loops. Councillor Loftus reported on the microphone which could run up to six individual hearing loops. The Clerk was asked to investigate. STANDING ORDER NO. 40 No questions had been received. ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £24,247.04 including HMRC, Utilities, SCC Pension Fund and staff salaries be approved for payment. Councillor Shearly-Sanders raised his objections to the payment being made to the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity and questioned why this was now a monthly figure. The Mayor advised that this had been agreed by full Council. Voting was: 10 for and 4 against. PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 19th July 2018 were noted. Councillor Haines reported that she and Councillor Schleip would be meeting with Navigus Planning on Tuesday 21st August. FINANCE & PERSONNEL COMMITTEE Councillor Cook moved and seconded by Councillor Schleip reference back of Section 9 – this was agreed unanimously. The Report of the Meeting of the Committee excluding section 9 held on the 2nd August 2018 was received and accepted including the recommendation to provide the following grants: i) £250 Kernos Centre ii) £500 Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance The Chair advised that comments had been received from LCPAS and SALC on the policies which meant that changes needed to be made before these could be presented to full Council. A request was made that these be provided to all Councillors as soon as possible in order that comments could be made prior to approving at a meeting. ENVIRONMENT & GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE The meeting of the 2nd August had been cancelled due to a lack of business. Councillor Cook, Chair of the Committee, provided details of a meeting held with an Officer of Babergh District Council to discuss the one point of business which was to improve publicity for the Market Place and possible sites for the flag pole outside the old offices. It was agreed that Babergh District Council should have use of the noticeboard in the Market Place to promote the Friday Market. The clerk advised that the Royal British Legion and the Cricket Club had both turned down the use of the flag pole. A request was made that the condition of the Charity’s flag pole be investigated as Babergh’s may be in better condition. REPRESENTATIVES Councillor Haylock reported that she had attended a Wool Town Association Meeting this week and the Chairman had resigned due to ill health. Mr. Sean Garnham had been put in post and he is reviewing the situation. No money has been released to the Association from the Leader Fund. One application has been submitted by the AONB who are involved with the Stour Valley. TOWN COUNCIL AGENDA The Finance & Personnel Committee had recommended that the public adjournment be discussed and agreed by full Council. Councillor Haines proposed to return to the fifteen minute public adjournment as before and a protocol be provided for the members of the public as to how this operates. Written questions would receive preference. STANDING ORDERS Councillor Cook had provided all Councillors with a pdf copy of the revised Standing Orders. Councillor Wiltshire requested a list of the amendments that had been made as she could see no correlation between the NALC guidelines and the Hadleigh Town Council guidelines. This information would be provided to all Councillors as Councillor Cook advised that no amendments had been made to the NALC Standing Orders only six additions which specifically related to Hadleigh Town Council.
The Chair thanked Councillor Cook for the work she had carried out. This item will now be deferred to the next meeting. Hadleigh Town Council would still be guided by the old Standing Orders. THIS COUNCIL SUPPORTS THE RIGHTS OF COUNCILLORS TO ACCESS THE MOST ACCURATE AND UP TO DATE INFORMATION AND SUPPORT IN ORDER TO FULFIL THE ROLE OF COUNCILLOR. It was agreed that Councillor Wiltshire liaises with SALC and arranges a meeting. Hadleigh Town Council agreed to meet Mr. Friend’s mileage expenditure. TOWN MATTERS Councillor Cook reported on correspondence being sent out by Pharmacy2U and the service they provided for the delivery of medication. The recommendation being made by the National Pharmacy Association is that this Company should not be used. The Clerk was asked to put the information received from the Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group on to the Town Council’s Facebook page. Councillor Shearly-Sanders questioned the Town Council’s Facebook page and who the administrator was. The Clerk advised that it had been agreed following the media training that the Facebook page be reinstated and set up correctly so this has now been done and she was the administrator. The meeting had taken 1.30 hours and it was pleasing to see that Babergh agreed with Hadleigh Town Council. It was stated at the meeting that no building should ever take place on this historically important piece of land. NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN The Chair reported on the meeting held with Navigus Planning and advised on how the Neighbourhood Plan would move forward. It was hoped that a meeting would be held possibly in October to relaunch the Plan. Babergh District Council officers were keen to work with Hadleigh Town Council to progress the plan and it was hoped this meeting would encourage members of the public to express an interest in taking part. Councillor Angland questioned Councillor Schleip over the comments made on her election paper regarding the Neighbourhood Plan Working Party as she felt this was incorrect. DATES OF SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER/NOVEMBER MEETINGS The Clerk advised that for these months the planning meeting would be held on the same evening as the Town Council meeting. It was agreed that the three planning committee meetings for these months would be held on the Tuesday before the Town Council meeting. Parish Council The main matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting of 22 August were: • New co-opted Councillor The Chairman welcomed Charlotte Britton to her first meeting. • Babergh District Council report In response to a question from Councillor Laing, Councillor Ward said the new homes bonus went into Babergh’s general fund and was not ring-fenced. In response to a question about CIFCO, Babergh and Mid Suffolk’s property investment company, Councillor Ward said there were three independent directors, plus one each from Babergh and Mid Suffolk who were not remunerated; he confirmed that, should they cease to be councillors, they would also cease to be directors. The Chairman said he welcomed the Void Improvement Project, which aimed to reduce the time that empty council homes remained empty once a tenant had left; the aim was to reduce this to 7-10 days. • County Council report Councillor Jones had attended his first meeting as a Stakeholder Governor of the new East Suffolk & North Essex NHS Foundation (ESNEFT); he said he would be happy to raise any concerns or comments about either Ipswich or Colchester hospitals. With regard to the charges levied by Highways when contractors did not meet deadlines, remove signage etc, Councillor Laing said he felt the money should go to those people most inconvenienced – eg the public, and parish councils. In response to a question from the Chairman, Councillor Jones said he would find out what the deadline was for the review being carried out by Mary Evans, Cabinet Member for Highways • Suffolk Roadsafe Partnership’s Speeding Strategy It was noted that a report on the outcome of the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) trial had been due to go to the Suffolk Roadsafe Board on 11 July. However, Councillor Jones said the trial had been extended to 27 July following the theft of some of the equipment. More information would be available in the autumn. • CPR training Following the recent successful deployment of the defibrillator in Lower Layham, Councillor Laing said there had been renewed interest in training. The Chairman would contact the trainers for some dates for another session in either the church or the Queen’s Head. • Litter bins on the playing field The Parish Clerk had been in touch with Babergh, who had said they were unable to empty litter bins installed on the playing field as it was a requirement that bins should be able to be driven up to, which would not be possible in the winter. It would also not be possible to supply a black wheelie bin for the playing field/recycling centre as these were classed as ‘domestic’; any rubbish collected at the recycling centre should be disposed of in the wheelie bins at the Village Hall. • Play equipment The Chairman said the Playing Field Committee felt there should be more play equipment for smaller children and had identified a ‘Tottlebank’ climbing frame and slide. The cost of this, including the base, would use up most of the remaining Section 106 funding. It was agreed unanimously an application should be made to Babergh, who would require evidence to be submitted confirming that parishioners would support and welcome the purchase of such equipment. Members of the Playing Field Committee would be delivering a questionnaire to appropriate households asking them to confirm their support for the project. • Privacy Policy It was agreed to adopt the draft Privacy Policy, which would be displayed on the website in order to comply with the new GDPR requirements. • Litter Pick It was agreed to hold another litter pick on Saturday 20 October; activity for that day would be confirmed at the next meeting. www.layham.org The Layham website can be found under the address above. It was attended by about 36 church members from both Layham and Hadleigh. Rev Joyce Willis gave a resume of Jean's life in the church over the years. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers and a voucher for an overnight stay at a hotel. WW1 at St Andrew's As this November is the 100 anniversary of the ending of WW1, St. Andrew's Church will be decorated with poppy waterfalls, items of memorabilia from the war and banners. The church will be open on Saturday 10th November from 11am – 4pm for viewing and refreshments. Layham Playing Field 100 Club The winning tickets for August and September were: August £25 Ticket No 90 Linge, £15 Ticket No 80 Gurr September £25 Ticket No 21 Dowie, £15 Ticket No 13 Curran October is the month when members of the Playing Field Committee call and invite ticket holders to renew their subscription to the 100 Club. The profit from this year’s sales has been used to purchase another picnic table which was recently put in place. Layham ‘Autumn Tidy-up’ -10am Saturday 20th October Parishioners have requested that we have an additional ‘village clean-up’ this year. In the spring we were delighted to have about 40 volunteers carrying out a range of tasks including: litter picking, clearing vegetation from the path between Upper Layham and Hadleigh, river bank clearance, and edging a green on Brett Green. We know that many of you who have helped before will join us again this autumn – thank you. We will also be very pleased to welcome new volunteers. If there is a particular task you would like to help with, or if you are aware of a different ‘tidying up job’ that needs doing, please let me or a member of the Parish Council know in advance so that we can get teams organised; or just turn up on the day! We can provide litter pickers, reflective jackets and refuse bags, but you will need to bring your own protective gloves please and possibly a garden tool. Dear Sir, What a wonderful display the people of Hadleigh have put up in the town in memory of those lost in the Great War. I never knew my grandfather as he was killed in 1914. Our family have served our country over 100 years. Grandad was in the Beds Herts Regiment. My father was in the Territorial Army and later the Home Guard. I served in the RAF (1955-59) and my son was 12 years in the Royal Engineers, serving in Cyprus, Germany and the Falklands. Add my mothers father – first war serving in Palestine, and two uncles, second war in the RAF. So the service of remembrance is very special to our family, so thank you to the people of Hadleigh for doing such a wonderful job. C. A. Petts

At this difficult time, it means a lot to me that I have been appreciated in my role at Hadleigh and that I will be missed. Dear Sir, For the past five years I and others have succeeded in reducing and now almost eliminating Himalayan Balsam from the Riverside Walk Area of Hadleigh and other parts of Hadleigh where it has been growing. If left to grow and seed these plants will spread and kill off all other vegetation and parts of the river banks will be destroyed. I recently found that a large number of these invasive weeds were growing along the banks of the River Brett downstream from Tinkers Lane and Benton Street and Upper Layham. Unfortunately some plants had reached maturity with seed pods exploding and spreading the seeds. Nevertheless I was able to collect a massive number of the seed pods which contained some five kilograms of seeds for me to destroy. Those areas where these plants have grown this year will need to be visited next May or June, which I will do, so I may destroy the young plants before they reach flowering. I would urge all who see these plants growing to "balsam bash" or advise others who can destroy the plants to do so. We need for the River Brett and surrounding areas not to become like parts of the Medway, Thames and Derwent which rivers have large areas of the banks infested with Himalayan Balsam. John Cunningham
Dear Sir, On Friday September 8th I went on a history tour of Hadleigh where I learnt about the town and some of its famous citizens. The next day, Saturday, I went on a tour of the Deanery Tower, our guide was dressed in the costume of the period and told of Mr Pykeham who built it and how it was done. What a wonderful building and the view from the roof overlooking our town was breath taking. It made me think what a waste of an opportunity that this hidden gem was not being shared with the tourists that visit our town. It was wonderful to share tis splendour and make it a reason for people to come and spend time and money in the town. P.S. A young lady from south London came for the day having travelled by train and bus (4 hours) when she heard of the history tours, all because Hadleigh had a special place in her heart. Dear Sir, I was one of five people lucky enough to get a tour of the Deanery Tower recently, including a woman who loves historic Hadleigh so much she made a round trip of eight hours to join us. I understand a few more also visited as part of a programme of town tours over that weekend. Our group spent much of the time discussing how sad it is that so few people get the opportunity given the tower’s very rare openings, and how astonishing and disappointing it is that Hadleigh, such a beautiful place, makes so little of its wealth of medieval and historic buildings to draw in visitors and the income that would flow in to sustain the Hadleigh we love. I know there are those who want to preserve Hadleigh in aspic, and we all want to keep the historic beauty (I live in a listed building) but we also need the town to thrive. If you need convincing, the sad demise of Partridges is the latest loud message. Change will require vision and some significant and brave decisions by our leaders and there will be all sorts of issues and challenges to face. But I fear that without change we will all lose in the longer term. Tony Dewhurst
Dear Sir, I am sure we have all appreciated the colourful display of hanging baskets in the High Street this summer. I would like to thank Stuart and all his helpers, especially Rowan who has done much of the watering this long hot summer, for organising this. Many years ago when Mike Whatling was President of the Chamber of Commerce Hadleigh entered the Britain in Bloom Competition and there is no reason why we can’t do so again. We are already part of the way there with the hanging baskets, the Tidy Town scheme and the volunteer gardeners maintaining the gardens in Magdalen Road. Peace on the Horizon In this article we remember: Harry Charles Allen 30 October 1918 October saw the German army collapsing all along the Western Front, lacking men, guns and resources they could only harass and irritate the Allies. The German command wanted an armistice, but one that would give them a break and enable the struggle to continue in 1919. So in Europe an armistice in October was not to be. Elsewhere armistices were being signed and reported in the newspapers which brought hope to the folk at home in Hadleigh that peace was at last on the horizon. The headline in the Daily Mirror on the 1 October read ‘BULGARIA’S UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER’ and proclaimed the collapse of the Macedonian Front and by the end of the month the Turks also gave up and readers saw ‘TURKEY UNRESERVEDLY SURRENDERS TO THE ALLIES’. The Macedonian Front had been renowned for dysentery and malaria and in 1918 for influenza, to the extent that the 1st Suffolks where down to an effective force of just 250 men. Then with the Turks out of the war the infamous Gallipoli Peninsula fought over three years earlier by among others 1/5th Suffolks and its contingent of Hadleigh territorials was now for the taking. On the 7 November 1918 the 1st Suffolks embarked on HMT Bermulian bound for the Dardanelle Straits and Gallipoli. How many Hadleigh men were on that victorious voyage is unclear, but certainly Private William Levi Chapman was among them having only returned from sick leave two weeks earlier. (Private Chapman was born in Angel Street in 1885 and had a wife and family living in Calais Street.) Other troops including Corporal Stanley Whymark (originally from George Street) of the Army Service Corps remained on the Macedonian Front around Salonica on salvage and clear up operations into 1919. The Turkish surrender brought relief to the 1/5th Suffolks, who with the difficult memories of Gallipoli in 1915, still had many Hadleigh territorials amongst its number; including Lieutenant Quarter Master Bertie Hasting ‘Hastie’ Double (later the Hadleigh auctioneer’s clerk) and Sergeant Fred Foster (a Hadleigh plumber). This battalion, since early 1917, had been pushing the Turks northwards through Palestine, now when the armistice was signed on 31 October 1918 they were on a one hundred mile march to Beirut where they arrived on 1 November. Later in the month the battalion returned to Egypt by ship where they spent Christmas. Demobilisation at home was completed by the middle of 1919 having been held up by an epidemic of influenza and a need to assist the civil powers to quell rioting in Cairo. On the Western Front, with the Hindenburg Line broken the Allies were making good progress. As an example on 11 October the 1/6th West Yorkshires were moving through the Line and were at an old sugar factory 8 miles north east of Cambrai; their objective for the next day being to move a further 3 miles and take a railway line at the village of Avesnes-le-Sec. They faced machine guns and shells, but were successful and reached the shelter of quarries by the side of the railway. Involved in that action was Private Harry Charles Allen from 23 New Cut, Hadleigh. He had been born in April 1899, attended Bridge Street School and

Wed 2 Oct The concert party of the 16th Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment, known as “The Lambkins” gave two bright and highly successful entertainments at the Town Hall on Wednesday afternoon and evening, September 25 in aid of the Suffolk Prisoners of War Fund. The proceeds of the performances realised the sum of £60, so apart from the pleasure they gave “The Lambkins” must feel rewarded for their visit to Hadleigh. They are a versatile company of entertainers, and have a repertory free from vulgarity. Wed 23 Oct A Meeting was held in the Church Room for the purpose of forming a post of Comrades of the Great War. Colonel Turner and his son, Captain Turner, the Divisional Secretary for Suffolk, explained the constitution and objectives to an interested audience of discharged men from Hadleigh and the outlying districts. The Post was started and the officers elected. Captain W T Eighteen was elected Capt of the Post and Mr D Dunphy treasurer and secretary. [This later because the British Legion.] Wed 30 Oct Alfred Clark was badly wounded six weeks ago and had his leg amputated about a fortnight since. He was in such a precarious condition that his mother was sent for and she left for France on Thursday of last week. Since then he has rallied and now appears to be going on as well as can be expected. [Alfred Clark survived and lived at 12 Aldham Road. He died in 1963.] 46

‘Understanding Dyslexia’ Special events at Hadleigh Library
on leaving school worked as a baker. He was conscripted in June 1917 and joined the 1/6th West Yorkshires in May 1918 when they were in the Ypres Salient. Here the battalion remained until late August when they moved south to the Arras sector in France and on 16th September were in front line trenches on the Hindenberg Line at Plouvain. The Hindenberg Line was broken at the end of the month and Harry’s battalion continued their push eastwards and it was during this continued push that Harry was seriously wounded, with a smashed femur. He was evacuated back to ‘blighty’ and eventually he found himself in the Western General Hospital in Manchester. Along the way he contracted influenza with his body temperature recorded as reaching 105.4ºF [40.8ºC]. He died of pneumonia on the morning of 30 October 1918. He was buried in Manchester and is remembered there on a screen in the Manchester Southern Cemetery and on the Hadleigh War Memorial. Private Bernard Taylor was among the younger contingent of Hadleigh men conscripted to fight in the Great War. He was born in October 1899 and lived at 51 Angel Street and later 53 George Street. In October 1918 he was serving with a battalion of the Middlesex Regiment on the Western Front and the Suffolk Free Press reported that “the sad news arrived on Tuesday [22nd] of the death of Pte Bernard Taylor. Deep sympathy is felt for the parents and members of his family.” But the information was incorrect and in the newspaper of 18 December he turns up as released prisoner of war, “The unexpected return of Bernard Taylor who was officially reported killed in action turned mourning into joy.” Taylor went on to live an active life; in 1923 he was captain of the Hadleigh British Legion football team and in 1939 was manager of the Ipswich greyhound track. He died in Ipswich in 1977. We have mentioned the on-going works to the Hurst Frame for several months now and this month I am delighted to say that they are nearing completion. The front should be finished in time for all the visitors who attend Santa’s Workshop in December to admire. The bed is now complete, and two bedstones are back in their rightful place with one more still to be relocated. The bedstone is the stationary, lower stone, out of the pair that are used to grind the grain, the top stone that turns is called the runner stone and spins above the stationary bedstone creating the scissoring or grinding action of the stones. A runner stone is generally slightly concave, larger and heavier while the bed stone is slightly convex. This helps to channel the ground flour to the outer edges of the stones. The stones are made from French Burrstones that create fine flour. French Burr comes from the Marne Valley in northern France. The millstones are created from sections of quartz cemented together and backed with plaster and bound with shrink-fit iron bands. Several of the stones had deteriorated badly and needed an overhaul consisting of new bands cementing and plaster. Paul Willis of Armour engineering in East Bergholt accompanied by Glenn completed the refurbishment of the iron work and the finished product can be seen in the photograph. Bill Griffiths has carried out the remaining cement and plaster works to the stones and the entire Hurst Frame. Another fantastic piece of craftsmanship. Restoration of the mill has to come to a close at the end of September as Santa and his team take over ready to welcome all the children to help with preparations for the big day. Surviving Winter In Hadleigh (Charity Commission Number 1162885) Cold snaps during the year including the “Beast from the East” resulted in more people asking for help. To date, we have: • We have assisted people unable to afford their heating bills. One lady was frightened to switch on her electric fire for fear she had not set enough aside to meet the bill. We recently came to the aid of an elderly lady caring for her terminally ill son as she feared she could not afford the bill for oil for the forthcoming winter. • We have purchased and distributed blankets, clothing, thermal underwear and socks and replaced an electric blanket heavily relied on by an old lady. • We have purchased and distributed coal, some kindly donated by a lady converting from solid fuel to gas central heating. • We have purchased warm clothing to enable a disabled young lady pursue her passion for horse riding over the winter months. • We paid for the servicing of a mobility scooter which is the only means an infirm couple, living on the fringe of Hadleigh, have of getting into the town. • We have purchased and distributed “panic alarms” particularly for the elderly, to bring attention and raise help in the event of a fall or in times of stress. This is a local charity ready, willing and able to assist anybody who has need of assistance surviving winter in Hadleigh or any of its surrounding villages. Opposition of Uranus Sun 5th Rise 07.04 Set 18.25; 15th Rise 07.21 Set 18.02; 30th Rise 06.47 Set 16.42. Moon New 9th, Full 24th. Planets The brightest planet on view this month is Mars, shinning in the southern sky at magnitude -1.2 in the constellation of Capricornus. The Moon is close-by on the nights of the 17th/18th of October. Opposition of Uranus. On the 23rd of October the 7th planet from the Sun, the ice giant Uranus, reaches 180 degrees separation from the Sun, or in layman's terms opposition; that is to say that the planet is directly opposite the Sun in the sky. Uranus can just be seen with the naked eye at magnitude +6 and this year the Moon will lie just south of the distant planet. A good pair of binoculars will help to see the planet easily , which will appear as a small bluish/green sphere. It won't "twinkle" as the other stars because it is shining via direct sunlight which will help those new to observing the outer planets. Uranus was discovered by William Herschel on March 13th, 1781 and takes 84 years to complete one orbit of the Sun at an average distance of 19 astronomical units or 1,767,000,000 miles. The planet also holds the distinction of orbiting the Sun on its side which indicates that a very violent incident happened early on in the solar systems life that literally knocked the planet sideways. All-in-all, it is a nice target that offers little in the way of meaningful observation with basic equipment, but it is very satisfying to see and cross off your list of solar system objects to see. Helping Hadleigh families in need A number of individual citizens and churches have come together in response to growing anecdotal evidence of incidences of food and other poverty in the town to join forces with the charity FIND to do something about it. Families In Need (FIND) has been a registered foodbank since 1990, although it also provides non-food items to households as well. Alongside the town’s Co-op, many churches already collect items for FIND which we deliver to their Ipswich depot. Now we have enough volunteers – although more are very welcome – to ensure that we can now pick up parcels from this depot and distribute them to families who need them here in Hadleigh. After a visit to FIND’s east Ipswich HQ by some of us in June, we were able to better understand how the operation works and feel that being part of the FIND network would be a sensible first step for us, rather than setting up a new foodbank from scratch. Hadleigh United Reformed Church has become a ‘referrer’ for FIND. We ourselves do not ‘assess’ any application – all we do is to gather some basic information for FIND to then contact those people. FIND operates slightly differently to many foodbanks, in that any judgements as to the eligibility for its services are made directly by their staff, particularly founder Maureen Reynel MBE. On a balmy September Saturday afternoon, Serendipity, Hadleigh Choral Society’s small choir offshoot, racked up the fun in the Garden at the 8th Bildeston B Natural festival with an eclectic selection of songs old and new. Led by musical director Nansi Browne, who lives in Bildeston, and with their accompanist Paul Dawson, the 25-strong choir tackled an extravaganza of catchy numbers from popular classics such as Ain’t misbehavin’ and Blue Moon to Adele’s Rolling in the Deep and Skyfall. The audience taking tea and cakes were then treated to some old favourites like Swing Low, Sweet Chariot and Bridge Over Troubled Water before the performance was brought to a close by a rousing medley of ABBA songs. Choir member, Liz Turnbull, commented that ‘it was exciting to be part of such a great Music Festival, with so many talented musicians right on our doorstep!’ Serendipity is available to sing at events such as weddings, funerals, fetes etc. If you need a small choir just get in touch with Nansi on 07773 034635 or email her at nansi.browne@icloud.com

Hadleigh Bowling Club hosted Suffolk v Hertfordshire Ladies in September. Four club members were selected and because of late absences more club members, Sheila Larwill and Barbara Bourner, stepped in. So far so good. The other late substitute was equally skillful but.......well....it was a bit of a surprise to see Peter Miller out there. But no, he’d not made any life-changing decisions, just game as ever to help out. Good for you, Peter! Fun Day brings out new faces young and old at Newton Green Would-be golfers from far and wide turned out to take part in an open fun day at Newton Green Golf Club. Many of the visitors attended as families, with the club able to promote its wide range of membership benefits to a broad audience. Peter Philpott, chairman, said: “Although many youngsters present had hardly touched a golf club previously, the fun nature of the mildly golf-linked activities led to a lot of enthusiastic participation. “However, a substantial number of those present had a good idea of the sport, with several having played at nine-hole courses in the region, but keen to consider a step up to a user-friendly club which also offers free lessons to all juniors. “It was good to see a number of parents that had previously dabbled in golf bringing their offspring with a view to making the sport a family activity. What the club offers in flexible memberships and support for players was an eyeopener for several visitors.”

Peter Blewitt Trophy In lovely early autumn conditions Stoke by Nayland held their rearranged Peter Blewitt American Greensomes competition. This Easter mixed event had been postponed because of adverse weather. There was an 8.00 shotgun start on the Gainsborough Course, which is in mid preparation for WPGA International Challenge 2018 which started with the ProAm on Wednesday 12 September through to Saturday 15 September. It was very fitting that this competition was won by Janet Hodge and her partner Robbie Benson. Janet recalled that she had joined Stoke in 1983 when the Captain was Peter Blewitt. Peter, and his wife Rita, always enjoyed playing mixed golf and the Stoke members play for his trophy every year. Janet and Robbie were presented with the Peter Blewitt Trophy by Captains Alan Line and Elaine Davidson. In second place spot were Ian McKay and Maryan Griffiths.

Hadleigh-Utd.co.uk Facebook page Hadleigh United Football Club - Official With the 2018/19 season now fully underway for our four senior teams its time for a recap on how each team has progressed so far First Team Their season kick-off with an excellent 5-1 home win over F.C Clacton, the following Tuesday evening we made the short trip to Brantham Utd, where despite playing some attacking football (the crossbar and a goal post getting in the way of two certain goals) we suffered a 4-0 defeat. August 11th we should have been at Great Yarmouth for an F.A Cup match but we ‘hosted’ the match due to their pitch being unfit during the dry spell, did home advantage help?? Yes as we ran out 3-1 winners to play Woodbridge in the next round. This was followed by narrow home losses against Kirkley & Pakefield 4-3 and Whitton United 2-1. Our FA Cup match at Woodbridge saw us take the lead in under the first minute and should have scored more goals but we succumbed to a heavy 5-1 defeat. FA Vase action saw a 160 mile round trip to St Margaretsbury with the home journey pleasant following our 3-0 win. Saturday 8th September saw Wroxham the visitors, we produced another fine performance to win 3-0. Saturday 15th we made a short trip to Little Oakley for the next round of the FA Vase, which saw us exit this competition losing 1-0. Reserves Their first match saw a trip to Halstead in a tight match we lost 21, this was followed by the visit of Holland FC where we ran out 3-0 in an entertaining match. Walsham -le Willows made a Friday night visit which was us lose 3-1 despite putting in a fine performance. On Friday 14th September Halstead were the visitors as we looked to avenge our recent narrow loss, but it was Halstead who completed the ‘double’ with a 3-2 this again was an entertaining match to spectate. Veterans (matches played on Sunday's) They started their season with an excellent 7-2 victory against Coplestonians ( could have been 8 had Mr Hills not been shot by a ‘sniper!!!’ tripping over as he was about to shoot). This was followed on the 15th September with a 3-1 against F.C Railway in a Cup match. Under 18's (matches played mid-week) They made an excellent start to their season with a 4-0 home win against Leiston, followed by a 2-1 home win agaist Coplestonians, next up a trip to Ipswich Wanderers saw us come back from being 6-1 down at one stage to eventually lose 6-4. An F.A Youth saw a long trip to Wisbech-St -Mary coming away with a 2-0 win to set up another long trip in the next round at Dereham on 20th September (result next in next November's edition). A trip to Mildenhall for a Suffolk County Youth Cup match saw us come back to level 2-2 at full time, losing 4-3 on penalties. New nets at Tennis Club! Hadleigh Tennis Club is sporting some brand new nets thanks to the Town Council. The picture shows Club members Trevor Rowland and Peter Richards doing an expert job of installing the nets. Along with the recent paint job this has given the courts a real facelift in time for the winter season. The are 3 floodlit all weather courts located on Layham Road next to the rugby club with “Club Play” sessions for members on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sunday mornings from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. The Thursday sessions are suspended through the Winter from late October to end of March but otherwise the hardy members play on regardless! Hadleigh Start the Season in a hurry!! The opening two games of highly entertaining rugby have seen the First Team defeat Bury St Edmunds III and Harwich II. They have amassed 128 points, scoring 19 tries and conceding just 1. A good crowd enjoyed the first home match against Bury. There is a great atmosphere and positive attitude at the Layham Road Club this season which permeates from the First Team through to the minis. This is reinforced by the fact that over two thirds of the First Team have graduated through the Youth and minis section which make us very much a home grown club! We are keen to encourage social and playing membership. All returning players, first timers and spectators are welcome. We understand that young people sometimes need to ‘have a go’ before they commit to something, so we offer a 2-week free taster membership for youth and minis to give them the opportunity to experience rugby at one of Hadleigh’s hidden sporting gems. Youth teams (U13 upwards) train on Wednesday evenings and Sundays. Minis train and play on Sundays. For further information contact our Youth Chairman, Marcus Gallagher on 07900 211666.
