Armistice 100 - Hadleigh Remembers The signing of the Armistice in the railway carriage at Compiegne in France on the 11th November 1918 brought four years of bloodshed on the Western Front to an end. The war had taken a heavy toll, almost 800,000 British & Commonwealth forces killed, many thousands more returned home mentally and physically scarred. Families faced an uncertain future and an entire nation had to rebuild itself. Hadleigh like other towns played its part. From a population of around 3,200 almost 850 men enlisted and all of the townsfolk including the children supported the war effort. The news of the armistice brought an immediate feeling of relief and thankfulness as a local newspaper reported - “The glad tidings that the Armistice had been signed spread throughout the little town on Monday with marvellous rapidity. Flags of all sizes and descriptions were speedily requisitioned and in a very short time Hadleigh assumed a gay and festive appearance. A deep sense of thankfulness pervaded all.” Thoughts soon turned to looking after those who had suffered and a new organisation called the ‘Comrades of the Great War’ established a post in Hadleigh. This went on to become the British Legion. Thoughts also turned to remembering those who fell and it was decided to erect a war memorial, funded through public subscription and inscribed with the names of the 112 men who fell. Events planned for 2018 include: 2nd - WW1 Commemoration Avenue of Oaks Event at Beaumont Park 9am-1pm 4th to 9th - Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project Exhibition in St Mary’s Church 8th - Mayor invites Hadleigh Schools to Remembrance Event at the cemetery 10-11am 10th - Festival of Remembrance in the URC, doors open at 7pm for a 7:30pm start. 11th - The RBL to observe a two minute silence at the milestone at 11am. 11th - Remembrance Day Parade and Service from the RBL on George Street at 1:55pm

Our walk round Mersea Island was enjoyed by 9 hardy souls who completed the 13 mile walk in record time - congratulations. Our November walk on Saturday 10th will be quite a bit shorter at around 6 miles. It will be a circular walk starting at Stratford St Mary then Low Lift Cottages on the St Edmunds Way, Lodge, Plumb’s Fm, Rivers Hall Boxted, Hill Fm, Sprike’s Grove, Glebe Fm, Langham and back to Stratford on the Essex Way. The walk is one we haven’t done for a long time due to the reduced bus service. This delightful area is worth the effort. We will meet at 0930 on the street in Stratford St Mary near The Black Horse Pub. Park on the road near the footbridge crossing the Stour (Grid Ref TM 04246 34044) . It is becoming increasingly necessary to travel by car if we are to avoid walking the same routes over and over again. Therefore, if anyone is without transport, please get in touch through the website contact page and we’ll do our best to help. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs.S trong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy or rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. Looking further out, December’s walk will be one where we can catch the bus from Hadleigh (or Hintlesham) towards Ipswich, alight at Chantry Park and walk back to Hadleigh via Burstall. In January we will do our usual New Year walk starting in Hadleigh and ending up at the George. More detail later. If anyone has a favourite part of the local area to visit please give us your suggestions and we’ll do our best to create a walk. We’re always open to new ideas. Fly Tipping at the Bottle Bank Please be aware that bottles and any other items left around recycling bins or beside waste bins is classed as fly tipping, which is an offence for which one can be fined. The photo was taken recently at Magdalen Road bottle bank. It is not the first time this has happened. It is irresponsible to leave bottles in this way. The 90 evening and Sunday service has been extended until 31.3.19. Many thanks to all who supported us with comments and by completing our on board bus survey. We need to encourage more passengers to use the service as we know it is vital to many people to enable them to get out and about for work, visiting, shopping and socialising and without this service many would be isolated. Our recent survey suggests that nearly 40 % of passengers are using the service for work related journeys. Hadleigh is a wonderful town in which to live and work and we are very fortunate to have bus services every day, evenings and Sundays to get to and from Ipswich. We believe we are one of a few towns in Suffolk that still has a Sunday bus service. Spread the word amongst your friends and families, use the bus, save the cost of fuel and parking in town, help to reduce greenhouse gases and pollutant emissions and road congestion by using public transport. Hadleigh Book Launch Two books are being launched in Hadleigh in November. Barbary Slave is a historical novel, written by Hadleigh resident Peter Holland. My Eight Year War is a personal memoir of the Second World War, by Alfie Holland, a Suffolk man born in Newmarket in 1919, edited by his nephew Peter. Peter Holland Barbary Slave is Peter's first novel, and his first published work. He recently completed editing a second book, My Eight Year War, his uncle's personal memoir of World War Two, first written in 2001. For Peter 2018 has been busy, studious and creative, getting these two books to print and completing an MA in Early Modern History (1500-1800). During this course, he became interested in the subject for his novel. Previously Peter was a teacher for thirty years and worked in business for eight. Barbary Slave The white slave trade was an essential part of the Ottoman Empire, which had an insatiable appetite for manpower, provided by seizing infidel non-believers, whether they were from Africa or Europe. Between 1500 and 1800 it is estimated more than 1 million Christian Europeans were seized. Britain and Ireland were not as affected as Mediterranean European states, losing about 40,000 over the period, but it was increasingly a problem through the 17th and 18th centuries. The years from 1600 to 1650 were probably the nadir for the British Isles. Barbary Slave is set in 1631, the year of the notorious Sack of Baltimore, led by the infamous Murat Reis. The other characters in Barbary Slave are fictitious but the story of former Spanish Muslims known as Moriscos and Algiers as a major centre for slavery is accurate. The story of Said, Khaled, Callum, Jack, Laura, Mary, Pedro, Oji, Anna, Mehmed and Madeline, is of lives entwined in this tumultuous year. My Eight Year War The events of the Second World War do not need another text book. However, the personal account of an ordinary man, an airman in the RAF, is not common. Alfie Holland left school in Newmarket at the age of thirteen, no qualifications and little prospect of gainful employment. Nineteen years old he was back in his parents’ home town of London, to where his mother had returned leaving his father in Newmarket. In 1938 he joined the RAF and remained in the military until 1946. His book, My Eight Year War, is his memoir of the momentous events of which he was a small part like millions of others. This saw him in northern France, as part of the ill-fated British Expeditionary Force, mentioned in dispatches for shooting down enemy aircraft with an adapted Browning machine gun, a narrow escape through Boulogne in May 1940, the Battle of Britain, north Africa, the invasion of Italy at Salerno, the fight over a year to capture Italy, Yugoslavia, Austria, finally being demobbed and life in post-war London. This rare account of the war by an ordinary man is a noble endeavour. Council opens second pop-up customer service point in Hadleigh Babergh has announced its second pop-up Customer Access Point will be coming to Hadleigh, following the success of the Shotley initiative this year. The new Hadleigh pop-up opened for the first time on Thursday 18 October at Hadleigh Library. Residents will have the opportunity to meet Customer Service staff face to face at the pop-up once a week, in addition to visiting the council’s access points in Sudbury Town Hall and 54 Ipswich Street in Stowmarket. Access to IT equipment will soon be available for customers to use during the library’s opening hours. As part of this pilot scheme Babergh and Mid Suffolk staff will be at Hadleigh Library on Thursday afternoons from 1:30-5pm for a period of three months. To make the service as convenient as possible, the pop-up gives residents the chance to sort their council and library needs in the same place. In coming weeks, there will also be permanent self-service iPads, providing anyone dropping by with access to online services for both councils. These will be available every day during the library’s opening hours. Cllr Derek Davis, Babergh District Council Cabinet Member for Organisational Delivery, said: “Improving customer service access remains a top priority for us and it’s great we’ve been able to continue the service which has worked so well in Shotley with a second pop-up Customer Access Point in Hadleigh. We understand that not everyone is fully comfortable using our services online and this work allows our residents to talk to a human face to face. “This project has enabled us to build on an excellent working relationship with Suffolk Libraries and will enable us to have a clearer picture of what our residents need.�

Improving your hearing in time for Christmas By Karen Finch RHAD FSHAA FRSA Audiologist and Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre There is nothing like the festive season with one social engagement after another. From the Christmas office party, drinks with friends and the buzz of the family gathering on the big day, December is a time for fun and social interaction. But is it? For those experiencing hearing loss, this can be something of an annual nightmare, causing a variety of communication issues! Imagine if you can, being unable to hear speech clearly because Christmas music is being played in the background or not being able to hear the excitement of children opening presents because they are all talking at once and you cannot separate the sounds clearly. Imagine dreading Christmas dinner on a large table with 15 other people because you won’t be able to hear what is being said around you. These are issues a normal hearing person doesn’t normally even consider. In in six people in the UK have a hearing loss but the number is far smaller for those who have sought professional help from an audiologist such as myself.. Hearing aids can make such a difference to someone's quality of life at this time of year. Hearing aids are so much smaller and discreet than they ever used to be and packed full of amazing features that will help during the festive period. You may have thought that with so much noise at a party or family dinner, hearing aids would just make things louder, but modern digital hearing aids aren’t simple sound amplifiers. They are designed to filter out all the unwanted noise - like the clanging of dishes in the kitchen or the background music - and help you focus on speech. Features such as directional microphones work to reduce the amount of noise allowed to enter your hearing aids. In noisy environments, like at a Christmas party, the system will work to pick up the least amount of noise. If the noise is located behind you, your directional microphones will adapt to pick up sound from in front of you and dampen noise from behind you. If you or someone you know is struggling with hearing problems, don’t struggle through another festive season not being able to join in and have fun. I urge you to book a hearing test now and find out what could be done to help you in time for Christmas. Pedal To Paris 2018 - Final Update On Thursday 30th August 2018 Will, Lottie and Kerry from Hadleigh Physiotherapy and Richard from Highcliff Veterinary Practice joined around 300 cyclists setting off from Eltham Palace, London to embark on their 298-mile journey to Paris in support of The Royal British Legion. Rolling road closures allowed them to cycle through the English and French countryside to the heart of Paris without having to worry about traffic, junctions or red lights. The team had the opportunity to choose different pace Pelotons to meet their individual cycling needs. They could be social in group 3 or 4 or hang on back of a wheel in group 1 or 2. Warm welcomes were received as they passed through France, with many locals coming out to cheer them along. Rosé and cake was served by local villages, with the Town Mayors personally greeting the cyclists. Whoever said it was flat between London and Paris was wearing rose tinted spectacles! The route was a challenge at times, encountering the Dover Hill at the end of 80 miles on Day 1 and a cheeky 8% climb called Baguette Hill, Day 2, post baguettes for lunch! The ride was supported by amazing Royal British Legion staff, ride Captains, mechanics, sports therapists and motor cyclist out riders. Plus, a historian to fill in the history of the route in relation to the World Wars. The route culminated in the awe-inspiring cycle towards the Arc de Triomphe and the honour of being part of the only cycle event apart from the Tour de France that the Arc de Triomphe closes for. The team then danced the night away in celebration at The Gala Evening hosted by the Royal British Legion to celebrate everyone’s success and money raised in support of the Armed Forces Community. Attendees received a talk about asset management and were encouraged to purchase the company’s products with tempting discounts if they agreed to sign up there and then. Some individuals that have used such services may not yet be aware that many complaints have been made by customers of such companies and that some of these companies are under ongoing criminal investigations by the police. One of these being Universal Wealth Management. How can this happen? It may come as a surprise that ‘Will Writing Companies’, ‘Estate Planners’ and ‘Inheritance Tax Planners’ can operate ‘unregulated’, which means that they are not all overseen by an independent body to whom they are accountable. This is very different to firms of solicitors, such as Holmes & Hills, which are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). Suffolk County Council is working collaboratively with the Suffolk Woodland Trust and other environmental organisations, including the recently created Suffolk Tree Warden Network, comprising of many volunteers, to produce a Suffolk Tree Strategy. It is at a pre-consultation stage, yet to be agreed. The strategy is to plan and manage trees and woodlands to protect, manage and enhance them at this very challenging time. The Policy will provide for all authorities to work together and be involved at all levels. The John Innes Institute, working with Suffolk Woodland Trust, has done a huge amount of work in researching the diversity of trees in East Anglia, helping towards the planning and strategy. DEFRA and the U.N. are taking an interest in the work being carried out in Suffolk. Trees have never been under greater threat than at the present time, due to climate change and the resultant summer droughts, fires and increasing diseases and pathogens. Following Dutch Elm disease, trees were replaced extensively with Ash, which have now been hit by Ash dieback. Many Ash trees in Suffolk have lost almost 50% of their crown. Additionally, there is now an acute decline in oak trees and research is being carried out into the reason for this. Some solutions to managing this decline are to make use of lesser known trees and to diversify planting. Diversity is key to healthy environments and preventing the destruction of large areas of trees when hit by diseases; monitoring early warnings signs of stresses and taking action to help trees to adapt to their changing environments. Research and studies have revealed that apart from trees being vital to health and well being, they also promote prosperity. People are drawn to areas where there are more trees and are assets to development and have commercial benefits. Gary emphasised the importance of planting suitable trees in appropriate places. Hadleigh is very fortunate to have an exceptional diversity of trees and canopy cover, which the community should value and strive to protect for future generations. Visit Hadleigh – The latest You Tube video is now live, which includes an excellent interview with James Cartlidge, MP. Funding remains an issue and not all businesses contribute to the costs, although they benefit from the website. Tidy Town: There is a noticeable reduction in litter generally, but an increase in fly-tipping. The lay-bye near Wolves Wood is particularly vulnerable to flytipping and the volunteers have been revisiting this area regularly, hoping eventually to clear it all. Fly-tipping of hardcore is increasing, possibly as a result of the charge imposed at recycling centres. Town Council: The Mayor held his Civic Service in St Mary’s Church, welcoming the Chair of the County and District Councils, along with ten Mayors from around the County and the Mayor from Wattisham. The Community Choir took part in the Service, which was very well supported. Children from local schools will be meeting with the Mayor and Mr Brennan of the Royal British Legion on 8th November. They will receive information about the servicemen who have Commonwealth War Graves in Hadleigh Cemetery. A cross is placed at each grave and a wreath is laid. Hadleigh Town Mayor has been involved in this event since 2014. This year Mr Brennan will also be meeting with pupils from Kersey, Wattisham and Layham, at their local cemeteries. Hadleigh Town Council is proud to have been able to support the new swimming pool project and is delighted that the planning application has now been approved. There has been a reprieve for the Hadleigh Community Transport no. 90 bus service, operating on Sundays, evenings and Bank Holidays, however only until the end of March 2019. If the numbers of passengers does not increase significantly, it is likely the service will no longer be subsidised. It is a case of “use it or lose it!� Hadleigh Legacy Group: There have been developments in a move to open the Deanery Tower more often for tours, following the hugely successful response from its recent opening at the National Heritage event. Volunteers will be planting more bulbs in Magdalen Road. Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group: The week of activities held in September was very successful. Many people signed up to allow their medical information to be shared widely within the NHS, resulting in faster access to medical information that could save lives. There has been a shortage of parking available at times at the medical centre, caused by people parking there who are not attending the medical centre. Obviously, this is not acceptable. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk One factor above all is often cited as the reason why our modern politics seems to be unstable, and that is the freeze in wages many have felt since the 2008 financial crash. The argument is made - in my view rightly - that since then living standards for many have at best remained static, fuelling resentment and prompting support for populist leaders and agendas offering simplistic solutions. As the most striking examples of such populism, Trump delivers protectionism; Corbyn promises nationalisation. I believe neither approach offers anything other than a threat to jobs and prosperity, but not long ago such policies would not even have been considered. That they are mainstream again confirms we live in different times, requiring those of us in Government to spell out how we can ensure that our best days are ahead of us, not a thing of the past. Thus, I was delighted to hear the latest earnings figures showing the strongest UK wage growth for almost a decade. Many statistics can feel a little intangible – but better wage packets are anything but! And when you factor in the recent fall in inflation, and unemployment remaining historically low, there is much to be confident about. But it’s the wages news that matters, particularly if it means we may be entering a period of prolonged improvements in pay. To quote the Bank of England’s chief economist Andy Haldane: “there is more compelling evidence of a new dawn breaking for pay growth, albeit with the light filtering through only slowly.” Which brings me to Brexit. It’s perhaps because those who supported Brexit most passionately are driven by concern for sovereignty, and the return of legal powers to Parliament, that in my view too little is made of the most obvious potential upside of leaving the EU. I may have campaigned to Remain, but it seems irrefutable to me that if we both control immigration at more sustainable levels, whilst maintaining the inward investment that drives job creation, we should see further upward pressure on pay for UK workers. That would be a Brexit outcome all should welcome.

Hadleigh Art Club Activities Hadleigh Art Club meets every Tuesday afternoon at 2pm in the Library Seminar room and the club is always pleased to welcome new members. The programme for November starts on the 6th with session devoted to painting flowers in watercolour. This is a follow up to the pervious week’s demonstration by Michele Webber. On the 13th of the month a chance to concentrate on detail; draw and paint a close up of an object, flower or animal. To the other extreme on the 20th the subject is simply ‘Elephants’. By the 27th of the month we’ll begin to realise that Christmas is just around the corner, so the afternoon Christmas will be the subject; Cards, Advent calendars, and tree decorations. Medieval Hadleigh: The Chief Manor and the Town This book is intended for the many enthusiasts of Hadleigh’s history. By sharing information from her translations of well over 200 of the original manuscripts from the medieval Manor of Hadleigh, Margaret hopes to cast more light on this hitherto sparsely documented era in Hadleigh’s past. Discussion within the book, in broadest date terms, ranges from 991 until 1540 but with the strongest emphasis on the 13th and14th centuries, the period for which there is the greatest number of surviving manuscripts. Revealed for the first time are many of the authentic day-to-day activities as well as the local crafts, businesses and town buildings of the medieval period. Two long-awaited road improvements for villages around Hadleigh have finally got the go-ahead In Nedging with Naughton, and the next door village of Great Bricett, residents have long wanted a speed limit extension on the Ipswich Road from where the current 30mph limit ends to beyond a newly installed bus shelter at the junction with Wallow Lane. This summer Green county councillor Robert Lindsay and the late Conservative county councillor Anne Whybrow both pushed the Highways to introduce a 30mph limit and ensure it ran beyond a blind corner. However, the council did not accept this but did agree to a 40mph limit. After consultation this has now been approved and works are expected to begin in the new year. Cllr Lindsay said: “Residents along this stretch have had to put up with frighteningly fast traffic on blind bends for some time. I know this is not ideal but I believe it is better to have a 40mph limit than a 60mph.” In Lavenham, villagers have been waiting for five years for a planned weight restriction trial on Water Street. The 18 month trial will include the installation of bollards and restricting HGVs from going down the hill from the High Street, but allowing them to climb the hill from the Brent Eleigh end. After months of delays and false start dates and much pushing by Green County councillor Robert Lindsay, Suffolk County Council highways have finally booked dates, January 6th to 11th, for the installation of the bollards and the one-way restriction. Councillor Lindsay said: “The trial weight restriction couldn’t come sooner for residents who have frequently had property damaged by articulated lorries and for anyone trying to walk safely along this medieval steet.”

Rotary Club of Hadleigh Diary – October 2018 It was a great pleasure for me as President of Hadleigh Rotary to be escorted by Rotarian Terry Wiles to the Civic Service at St. Mary's Church on Sunday 23rd September. During this memorable occasion I was introduced to the Mayor and Mayoress together with several other of Hadleigh's dignitaries. It was a great opportunity to discuss and highlight the involvement of our club in the community of Hadleigh. At our meeting on the 9th of October in The George, we were lucky enough to have three visitors from the Rotary Club of Ipswich Wolsey, Rotarians Duncan McLennon and Trevor Clarke together with their President Jerry Noble. It made our meeting quite special as they were able to witness two new members being inducted. Both Ron Jenkins and Fred Creed became full members of The Rotary Club of Hadleigh and were welcomed into the fellowship of Rotary by the whole club. President Jerry Noble informed us of the Ipswich Wolsey club's Charter evening and on the 22nd October we shall be joining them in their celebrations. It’s World Polio Day on Wednesday 24th October. Rotary clubs help to plant millions of purple crocuses every year to raise awareness of the efforts to end polio. We shall be planting our purple crocuses in Hadleigh shortly, watch out for the flowers in spring and remember when it comes to global health, there is no “them” only “us” During our meeting on Thursday 25th October plans will be made for Remembrance Sunday the 11th November. Preparations will also be put in place for the visit from our District Governor on the 13th November, something we are all looking forward to. Through membership of their local Rotary Club, members use their time and talents to make a difference in their own communities and around the world. There are over 1750 clubs in Great Britain, Rotary is open to anyone over 18 years old who wants to give something back to their community, meet new people and have fun. The Rotary Club of Hadleigh meets twice a month at lunchtimes in Hadleigh and if you would like the opportunity to serve your local community and enjoy good company you would be most welcome to attend a meeting to find out what we do. Mayors Monthly Well it’s October and noticeably chillier today, but not too bad as yet. Last month I held the Civic Service at St Mary’s which was well attended by the public and invited Mayors from the surrounding towns, unfortunately it was a little to overcast to use the Guildhall garden for the reception after, something that we have done in the past as it is a nice setting. Following on from that in October my wife and I attended the Mayor of Needham Market at her civic service where the Town Councillors stood and asked for God’s guidance that they should work as one for the good of their town. I had never seen this done at any other service before, it was pleasing to see their solidarity. Thank you to the gentlemen of the Probus club for inviting me along to their lunch meeting held in the George P.H. It would appear that we have been adopted by a black cat with a small white patch beneath its chin, and some missing fur patches. It was noticeably nervous when first we saw it in the garden but now comes into the house of its own volition. We have no idea where it is from, but it must have belonged to someone out there. Fidelis Activity News Giggly Pig It’s not every day that you have the opportunity to hear the colourful life story of a convicted drug dealer condensed into a 45 minute talk. Members were afforded that experience when ex jail bird, Tracy Mackness visited the group just recently. Her story made for compelling listening, not least because it was full of honesty, humour and inspiration. Ironically, it was her ten Tracy Mackness year incarceration that gave her the chance to turn her life around. Making the most of everything on offer ‘inside’ Tracy came out with an incredible list of qualifications which included pig husbandry and business studies to name a few. With her shrewd business acumen, bubbly personality and help from an old friend she set up the highly successful Giggly Pig Company. Embracing the farm to table ethic, Tracy rears happy pigs on her farm. Her sausages and bacon are available at Farmers’ Markets and Country Fairs. A thought provoking but entertaining evening which was much enjoyed by all with the added bonus of a chance to purchase Giggly Pig products and the speaker’s book ‘Jail Bird’. www.gigglypig.co.uk/ Hattie Bennett. In complete contrast, cellist, Hattie Bennett grew up surrounded by talented, influential and loving musicians. With music in her genes , a career in that direction was almost inevitable but as a young mum not easy to achieve. Fortunately, Hattie did manage to secure work with various musical initiatives and orchestras, including a long run Hattie Bennett at the original Wolsey Theatre. Anecdotes of her life and travels were punctuated by appropriate, haunting cello pieces which were much enjoyed by her audience. Hattie and fellow musicians are now part of the active musical scene in Felixstowe. Ballets.The wonders of modern technology enabled members to see two less common ballets being performed in Sydney Opera House and Covent Garden in the comfort of Cineworld, Ipswich. The Merry Widow and Mayerling were both sympathetically performed in a splendid array of colourful costumes and sets. Not the real thing but it feels like it. The Fox. Returning to old eating haunts is often risky but there is no cause for concern when it comes to The Fox at Bulmer Tye. Lunch Bunchers were able to tuck into delicious, freshly cooked food in a no frills setting. Their hours have been extended to include breakfast and evening sittings WW1. Fidelis members have been beavering away to make their contribution to the Remembrance tributes around the town. In addition to knitting over 1,200 poppies, there are displays in the windows of Les Hymas, The Thrift Shop,Hadleigh Kitchen and Bedroom Studio and The Hairloom by Gilly Dutton, Liz Wilson and Jan Devey respectively. Hadleigh Choral Society News It has been an exciting season for Hadleigh Choral Society. Highlights include a well received performance of Elgar's ‘The Music Makers’ and ‘The Spirit of England’ at Snape, where they were joined by the soloist John Lill performing Rachmaninoff's piano concerto No.2 in C minor. Summer concerts included a wide range of lighter music; traditional, folk songs, a medley or two and an arrangement for SATB specially written by the conductor Christopher Phelps. These concerts are hosted by local churches and raise funds for a specific cause or charity. Another part of the excitement this year is that John Lill CBE has become their new President. Rehearsals are now under way for their Autumn concert when they will be performing Haydn's ‘The Creation’ which will be sung in English. Strictly Come Christmas Have you ever noticed with Strictly, or indeed with any reality show where viewers are asked to cast a vote, that every so often you ask yourself ‘Eh? How on earth did they get voted off? They were really good!’ And the chances are it’s because we sometimes take other people’s actions for granted. Simon and I won’t always pick up the phone to vote for our favourite contestant because we assume other people will be voting for them. The same goes for our small, but perfectly formed army of volunteers that we look out for and rely on each Christmas to ensure our Christmas Day meal goes with a swing. So, if you are somebody who thinks ‘They won’t need me, they have others’, please reconsider! We like to think at The Christmas Present Trust that each and everyone of our volunteers is cherished, whether they are doing some pre-Christmas wrapping of the gifts we hand out on the day, peeling some of the 30kg of potatoes we served up last year, decking the hall (The Ansell Centre!) with boughs of holly, meeting and greeting any number of guests, washing up on the day itself or clearing up after the event, we thank you as individuals and as a collective whose team work knows no bounds. It is not too late to express interest, from financial donations to goods and services, and of course to volunteer in supporting the event any time on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or Boxing Day. We very much look forward to welcoming you, whether or not you have made contact in previous years. Most importantly, if you want to come along as a guest, or you know someone else who would like to be invited, please let us know. The event is open to anyone who cannot be with family or friends on Christmas Day; this includes those who are a couple or small family for whom Christmas Day is just like any other as they do not have a wider family group or their relatives live a long way away. And one final thing. We are indebted to Charmaine Mckissock who has worked tirelessly on our behalf to produce our lovely logo. In addition, Charmaine has designed some beautiful Christmas cards, having donated her artwork to the cause, and these will be sold in aid of the Christmas Present Trust to secure future events. Hadleigh Orchestra Conductor Kay Bartlett Our Christmas concert will be on Sunday, December 9th at 6.30 pm in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church - where we can be warm and comfortable. The main item will be a performance of Peter and the Wolf and we are arranging for a professional actor to read the narration. Other popular items will include a selection from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, and an orchestral arrangement of some of Brahms Waltzes. As usual, we shall be including four popular carols for everybody to sing, accompanied by the Orchestra. Entrance, as usual, will be free, but we shall ask you to make an offering as you leaver to help to cover costs and to make a donation to a charity to be named on the night. McCarthy and Stone ‘Retirement Living to the Full’ is their slogan. Unfortunately a meeting to be held 13th September with McCarthy’s was cancelled the day before by the Project Manager for personal reasons. It is very disappointing McCarthy’s made an application under ‘minor material amendements’ that I consider significant. For example, removal of the brick plinths to the rear and side of the houses, reducing the quality of red bricks and roof tiles, removing box cladding windows from the front of the houses, painting windows white rather than muted colours that I originally suggested and recommended by Jonathan Duck of Heritage. In addition, a request for the removal of doors and inserting blind windows, I believe a line had to be drawn as these changes fundamentally affect the quality of this development which could easily be downgraded. I objected to all of the above and the application has now been declined by Officers with the exception of a change in the form of the windows. McCarthy’s have received significant publicity in the media recently about their reduction in cutting costs and it is disappointing that developers approach their planning process in this manner. I have continued to receive many letters regarding the 17 steps which limit access to the Monet’s bridge by residents on an over 55 development and something that they use as part of their marketing package, but supposedly a gift for the community. E: tony.chapman@mccarthyandstone.co.uk. Hadleigh Market Square Bench Following a rather lengthy and heated debate with the Steering Group, their preferred choice was rejected by the public. Following a democratic survey of over 300 people in and around the market, 99.5% preferred Fig 2 and 3 below, and 0.5 chose Fig 1 as per the Steering Groups choice. Residents were clear that they preferred a bench similar to that currently in the square outside the Hadleigh Health Centre. The reasons were a preferrence for a bench that looked outwards, with a back which will reduce the likelihood of elderly, children rolling backwards and in keeping with the surroundings. However, Hadleigh Town Council voted to select a bench unanimously rejected by residents!! I simply fail to understand why people elected to represent residents to Town Council, ignore the ‘Peoples Choice’ when the argument and evidence was put forward and furthermore select a bench not fit for purpose surrounding a bed below a tree that Babergh have highlighted they will not be able to maintain.

Local Government Boundary Commission - I am delighted to inform you that the Boundary Commission listened to a very robust argument to keep two district Wards in Hadleigh rather than amalgamate the two Hadleigh North Ward will remain in existing form with a slight change of boundary. The Boundary Commission originally wanted one Ward for Hadleigh to be served by three Councillors, inevitably residents would not be best served as three Councillors if they were from different parties and in disagreement would eventually cause a lot of chaos. In this instance, I can remain focused on the 2,400 residents that we serve and know in the Hadleigh North Ward. Comet set for close approach Sun 5th Rise 07.04 Set 16.32; 15th Rise 07.21 Set 16.17; 30th Rise 07.44 Set 16.02 Moon New 7th; Full 23rd. The Planets Mars is still shinning brightly in the southern evening sky at magnitude -0.3, and resides in the constellation of Aquarius. Uranus is visible during the night using binoculars and is located a little south of the constellation of Aries and is shinning at magnitude 5.7. Close Approach Comet A comet named 46P/Wirtanen is approaching perihelion (which is set for December 12th) rapidly now and will make a relatively close (though safe) pass of the Earth a few days later on the 16th of December at a distance of 7,220,000 miles or 30 Lunar distances. The comet was the target for the ESA mission Rosetta which eventually landed a probe on the comet 67P/ Churymov-Geraslmenko. The launch window was missed and so 67P/ was deemed a suitable replacement . 46P/ has an estimated size of 1.2km or roughly half a mile in diameter and was discovered by Carl Wirtanen at the Lick observatory, California in January 1948 and this years close pass is the best since discovery and also the best for hundreds of years into the future with the comet expected to reach magnitude 3, meaning an easy naked eye object. It won't have a large tail though! This comet belongs to a group called the Jupiter family comets which go no farther out into space than Jupiter meaning they make repeated approaches to the Sun, thus expending their volatile materials much more quickly; in fact, 46P has an orbital period of just 5.44 years but it is unusual because it holds more water within its nucleus than other comets of its type, so it means this comet could be quite explosive should the Suns heat hit a sensitive area of the surface. The comet is heading up towards the constellation of Taurus and at its peak in December will be located close to the Pleiades or 7 sisters where it will visually appear as a large, but diffuse, circular cloud. Suffolk County Councillor - Mick Fraser The No 90 Bus Service Last month I wrote to say that the contract funding the No 90 Bus service run by Hadleigh Community Transport Group had ended and that no decision had been made by Suffolk County Council (SCC) for its future. I have worked closely with the operator, SCC officers and Cllr Mary Evans, the SCC Deputy Leader, to identify what could be done to continue supporting this service. I had hoped to get some temporary funding to maintain this service until the end of the year, but I’m glad to announce that I managed to secure funding to keep this service in place until 31st March 2019. However, this service is only used by approximately 7.5 passengers per journey costing, £5.67 in subsidy per passenger. There has been no significant growth in passenger use since 2012 and with the financial challenges currently faced by SCC, its continued funding cannot easily be justified. Therefore, passenger numbers must increase significantly over the next 6-months for me to have a strong case to secure this service further beyond this date. SCC will need to look closely at how [Connecting Communities] transport is funded going forward and may consider radical transformation from the present standard routes Pavements for the Disabled and Elderly I have been approached by a few mobility scooter users, carers and residents of the town’s care homes about what can be done to improve the pavement surfaces and road crossing points. Their issues are that uneven surfaces are very uncomfortable for mobility scooter and wheelchair users, and there are safety concerns with respect to the thin wheels catching in cracks and gaps between paving slabs. If this becomes a common theme I could have a strong case to raise with Highways so that this matter might be addressed. It would be helpful for me to have more evidence and I would encourage those affected if they could submit pavement defect reports or contact me directly. Tell us what you think about local services as Suffolk County Council looks to save £25 million in 2019/2020 Like all local authorities, Suffolk County Council faces significant financial challenges in the delivery of essential frontline services to support the lives of the most vulnerable young people and older residents across the county. We need to save around £25million in 2019/2020 as we face continued reductions in central government grants and from other income sources too. In setting the budget, we must take into account our statutory obligations, as well as the service areas that people value most, including spending on roads. There is no easy solution and we have tough calls to make. We have launched a consultation for this and would encourage you to give your views on the services provided by the council as it faces the challenge of making savings of £25 million in 2019/2020. The survey has already been completed by over 150 residents in its first two days. By visiting the consultation page on the council’s website at www.suffolk.gov.uk/budget2019 you can access the short survey and learn more about how much is spent on particular services. You can also watch an introductory video from Cllr Richard Smith and use an interactive tool to navigate around the council’s website to focus on services that are of interest to you before you complete the survey. Your help will support the council’s budget-making process and alongside the views you give, we will listen to councillor colleagues and council officers as well as partner organisations across the public sector with whom we work closely to deliver services to Suffolk’s residents. Key Stage 1 Year One have started the term with some very busy and exciting topics. Our work on senses has involved food tasting, smelly pots, learning about Louis Braille and making feely pictures which are read by touch rather than sight. Thank you to Morrisons for donating the food. We continued to use all of our senses in the woods, where, among other things, we noticed signs of autumn, made leaf rainbows and made a fire. The children were able to make links with their PSHE work, discussing the importance of only eating foods which they knew and how be to safe lighting and being around fire. For our topic of houses parents joined us for two local walks, looking at old and new houses. A big thank you to Mr and Mrs Lewis for allowing us to look at their old house and garden, the children all enjoyed finding out what the walls were made from! We were lucky enough to have Mr Scaife from Wincer Kievenaar Architects to talk to the children about designing and building new houses. The children were then challenged to design the most imaginative house; three pairs from each class presented their designs to the year group and a winning pair from each class was picked and awarded a prize and certificate.
As part of the Hadleigh Armistice 2018 Commemorations, the children and parents of Hadleigh Community Primary School were given the opportunity to attach a poppy to a cargo net, making a beautiful display which is now proudly exhibited outside our school. This gave the children time to reflect on the upcoming 100 year anniversary of the end of WW1, which we will be commemorating in school next month. Solicitors learn about the impact of dementia Nearly a quarter of a million people will develop dementia in the UK this year – and that will increase to more than a million by 2025. It’s against that backdrop that Gotelee Solicitors has further boosted it’s services to those who suffer from the condition by working with the Alzheimer's Society on its Dementia Friends Champions initiative. Two of our Lawyers - Nicola Weldon and Rachel Dawson - have completed the Dementia Friends Champion training, which provides an invaluable insight into the illness and how it affects people, and the practical actions that Dementia Friends can take that could help someone with dementia living in their community. Symptoms of dementia include memory loss, Rachel Dawson confusion and problems with speech and understanding. Hadleigh & District Garden Club Friday October 12th 2018: Our final outing of the year was to John Barker's forest garden near Maldon, he had given us a talk on his project some time ago and we were keen to see it in action. John's father bought the six acre plot in 2010 when it was simply a field. Since then they have worked half a day every week, with the occasional group of volunteers, to develop the site over the last eight years using a method known as agroforestry which is agriculture incorporating the cultivation of trees. All the trees have been grown from seed or cuttings and all of them have been chosen for the contribution they can make in terms of their productivity. So they have planted walnuts, sweet chestnut, hazel, quince, crab apple, pine, eucalyptus, silver birch, plum and many more. Willow is grown for fencing and is also used as a wind break as the site is open and sloping. As well as other plants roses and blackberries have been planted for hedging, both for their fruit and to deter rabbits. They have hand dug ponds for irrigation and to encourage wildlife which is one of the major aims of their work. They have acheived a great deal in just eight years but this is a long term project and the next phase is to start to underplant the trees. This was a very different garden visit for the club with lots of new ideas to think about and well worth a visit in years to come. Our next get together on Monday November 12th 2018: After the wilds of Essex last month we are back in Hadleigh for this month's meeting. We welcome Fiona Edmond from Green Island Garden Ardleigh, who will be talking about landscaping and garden design. The final competition for the year will be 'a vase of autumn foliage', and of course there will be the raffle and plants on offer at bargain prices from the sales table. Just to remind you that we meet in the dining room of the Town Hall at 7.30pm, entrance is £1 for members and £3 for visitors. We hope to see there

Down to Earth ...with Dave After a topsy turvy year we are at last getting a proper autumn with some sun, some rain, colder nights and falling leaves. The colour in the trees as you drive around our lovely lanes is quite spectacular. On the allotment this year's rent has been paid, so I will try and get value for money for another year, not that difficult if you take into account the various crops produced and the exercise needed to produce them. As you get older you are constantly told to exercise more and eat a healthier diet. My advice is get an allotment , problem solved. At this time of year it becomes a little easier as it is mainly harvesting long standing crops and clearing away the remains of the beans, courgettes, squashes etc., all of which go on the compost. With the regular rain watering is no longer needed, that is one job I don't miss. Even the weeds that seem to grow as soon as you turn your back are easily removed with a sharp hoe. The recently planted garlic has shot up as if they are in a hurry but they will be there for months yet. A tip if you have mature cabbage plants, when harvesting don't pull up the whole plant, just cut off the head then make a cross cut in the top of the stalk. This will in time give four baby cabbages to use as spring greens, it will pay to earth up the stalk for some support. For many years I have grown lots of different fuchsias, including several mature standards. This year for the first time some of them have been infested by fuchsia gall mite. This is a relatively new and serious pest that was first found in South America in 1972. By the 1980's it had spread to California, then by 2002 it had spread to France. By 2017 it had reached southern England. Fuchsia gall mite is spread by infected plant material including cuttings, but the tiny mites can also move short distances on wind currents or on other flying insects, in our area it can survive winters outdoors. It shows itself by producing small cauliflower like growths at the ends of stems. There are no pesticides available for home use, the only treatment is to cut back hard all affected growth, but some mites will no doubt survive and more cutting back will be needed. It is advised that any infected material be burned and not composted. It is very sad when a plant that you have had for several years is potentially ruined by some almost invisible little pest. To finish on a happier note the Wyevale garden centre on the outskirts of Sudbury has been bought by the Perrywood garden centre, a large upmarket family business run from Tiptree. We have long needed a good garden centre locally and look forward to spending time there in the months ahead. That's all for now, Dave

East Anglian Garden Group Our Autumn meetings began with a lively and informative talk from writer andorganic gardener Val Bourne, ‘Peonies and Roses – A Marriage Made in Heaven’. She recommended planting roses, floribundas, which flower at the same height as the peonies, to give a level effect of colour. Val particularly prefers the Lactiflora Hybrids as they have a longer flowering period. She went on to dispel the myth that once planted, they cannot be moved, and that October is the perfect time for both planting and moving. She advised that they should not be planted too deeply, as the tubers need to feel the cold, in order to flower well the following summer. As an organic gardener, she chooses roses which are impervious to black spot, among them, David Austin’s Wild Eve’. Our next meeting, the AGM, on 3rd November, will have Rasvan Chisu speaking on ‘Castles and Plants of Transylvania’. Following that, on December 1st, we are having a social coffee and cake Wreath Making morning. We are very pleased to announce that our Celebrity Speaker, on February 16th, will be James Alexander Sinclair with his talk, ‘Dancing through Borders – the stories and plants behind some of James favourite gardens’. Tickets will be £10 to members, and non- members £15. These prices include a £2.50 donation to a charity of James’ choice. Tickets are on sale now, and further details can be found on the website. Restoration works at the mill have had to come to a stop as October signals the setup for Santa and His Elves Workshop, one of the major events of the year for the mill. September saw an unprecedented number of mill open days with visitors coming from near and far who were able to witness actual works in progress completing phase 3 of the Hurst Frame restoration. Once Santa & the Elves have vacated we will start Phase 4 of the restoration during Januay. This phase will consist of reinstating the runner stones redressing them and building the stone furniture. The Hurst Frame looks so different now, we had all become very conditioned to seeing the dereliction as none of us will have ever seen the Hurst Frame in any other state. It has been repaired as per the original, this only made possibly by referencing & using some old photographs taken in the 1960’s. Fortunately some old photographs were available on the mills archive website showing images of the hurst frame that were complete . together with small signs and actual evidence means that the frame that is now in situ is as per the original. Visitors that have already seen the completed works have commented on the superb standard of craftmanship and thanks for this go to Bill Griffiths.
Hadleigh Parkside Pre-School October has been a busy month here at Parkside. Our home corner has been turned into a Vegetable Patch with real vegetables that the children have been cutting up and exploring textures and smells! The children have had fun outside painting lines and patterns over our hardcourt on the ground as they ride their bikes up and down through the paint! We had lots of fun at our Holiday Club for Half Term Halloween activities, from Pumpkin Carving to Halloween at Hollow Trees Farm. Our next Holiday Club is scheduled for February Half Term 2019! We have a few limited spaces left for January so get in touch to arrange a visit before we break up for Christmas. Our Little Acorns group has been wonderful and we have a few new spaces opening up for this in January also. Parkside pre-school now take children from 18months – 8years and we offer a pickup service from St marys’s, at both 12pm from Nursery, and 3pm from the main school. We also pick up from Hadleigh community primary school at 3pm. Last but not least we must wish Lucy well as she goes on her Maternity leave with baby due in November. Good Luck!

Are you feeling as dull as a damp autumn day? Has your razzmatazz flown south for the winter? Do you need something to light your blue touch paper, to warm the cockles of your heart like a cosy fire? Try singing! Various research projects have found evidence for positive effects on physical and mental health, especially as part of a choir or other group. The Research Centre for Arts and Health found singing in a choir reduced mental distress and improved mood for the majority of members, significantly more so than even playing team sports. These effects are getting so well known that there are campaigns for singing on prescription! The NHS promotes 5 steps to mental wellbeing and singing in a choir hits all of these: • Connect - singing in a group is a particularly powerful way to connect to your fellow songsters and a quick way to develop social bonds. • Keep learning - of course there are always new tunes, rhythms, words and techniques to keep your brain active. • Get active - singing itself and all the standing up and sitting down give you a gentle work out. • Giving to others - choirs can become informal support networks, give performances at old peoples homes and donate concert proceeds to charity. • Mindfulness - singing is very absorbing and you definitely get caught up in the experience of the moment, hearing your own voice blending with others around you and creating beautiful harmonies. This would be no great surprise to members of Hadleigh Community Choir. That's why we keep coming back week after week and year after year. Julia, a long term member, recently commented "I had a bad day at work recently but I felt so much better after a bit of singing practice at home". We'd love you to come and share the good feeling with us. At the moment we are rehearsing for our Christmas concert (Dec 8th, see details elsewhere). Why not drop in and see what it's all about, then come back on Jan 17th when we start learning a whole new set of songs. Or come to one of our performances - Nov 10th at the Festival of Remembrance or the Christmas concert - and chat to choir members. The Hadleigh Society I’m sure many of you will have heard of the Hadleigh Society but perhaps are not fully aware of what it does. Why not come to one of our meetings and find out more. We are not a ‘specialist’ group just people from the area who enjoy finding out more about locally relevant history, planning and environmental subjects. The Society has a good number of members and holds seven meetings a year upstairs in the old Town Hall (access by the side entrance of the Guildhall Complex) starting at 8.00pm. There is a small charge for nonmembers of £3 but members attend free. You can see the programme on our website at www.hadsoc.org.uk. French’s Care Haven and Care Farm It has been several months since our last news up-date, so I would like to let all know that we are still continuing to help our rescued animals and those people with mental health problems that live in and around Hadleigh. On 1st December we have a Christmas Barn Dance at the Ansell Centre. The Hosepipe Band will be playing. There will be a licensed bar, barn yard snacks and a raffle. Doors open at 7.pm. French’s Care Haven and Care Farm have moved to a temporary base for now as I am sure a lot of people who read the community news are fully aware of, but as our temporary base is set for sale and to go for more houses, our time is limited there as well, we are expected to have to move again early next year. French’s are still looking for a permanent base to move to, so we are calling out for somewhere to rent for our Charity and we need 15 acres or more with a barn or outbuildings. Since our move we have sadly lost our oldest pony Smuggler, he suddenly became ill and within 6 hours had to be put to sleep because of heart failure. HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL Report of the Meeting of the Council held on the 20th September 2018 Present: Councillors: Matthews (Town Mayor), Angland, Byrne, Cook, Fraser, Free, Haines, Haylock, Knock, Loftus, Schleip, Shearly-Sanders and Wiltshire, In attendance: Suffolk County Councillor Fraser, Babergh District Councillors Dawson and Grandon and 7 members of the public. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies were received from Councillors: Monks and Sheldrick. These apologies were accepted. DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST There were no declarations of interest. MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Council held on the 16th August 2018 were confirmed as a correct record and signed. MATTERS ARISING This Council supports the rights of Councillors to access the most accurate and up to date information and support in order to fulfil the role of Councillor. To achieve this all Councillors should have the opportunity to meet with Jim Friend of SALC and the Council supports Councillors Wiltshire’s initiative and offer to facilitate this as soon as possible. Councillor Wiltshire advised that Mr. Friend of SALC had recommended delaying the meeting until the Councillor Training has taken place. He felt that certain items would be covered under the training but could re-arrange the meeting if it was felt necessary once the training had been completed. Environment & General Purposes Committee The Clerk advised that no-one who had been contacted was interested in the flag pole outside the old Babergh District Council Offices. District Councillor Grandon was requested to report back to Babergh District Council. The Minutes of the Meeting of the Council held on the 23rd August 2018 were confirmed as a correct record and signed. MATTERS ARISING Cemetery Extension There was a lot of discussion over the cemetery extension and a number of questions raised which the Clerk and Councillor Byrne, Chair of Sports & Open Spaces attempted to answer. Councillor Knock said he had not been invited to the meeting on the 8th August. He was advised that he was not a Councillor when the invitation to attend was issued. Councillor Shearly-Sanders said that the Mayor could not send out the letter of award as the tender process had been carried out on the 2015 application. He was advised that this was incorrect. The price received from the first tender process was over £1,000,000 so the specification of the work was downgraded. This led to the second planning application being submitted and the second tender process being carried out. At this point the meeting was adjourned for members of the public to ask questions on the cemetery extension and standing orders. POLICE The Clerk reported the response received regarding a service level agreement should Hadleigh Town Council pay for a PCSO. Councillor Cook reported on work carried out in the High Street by a utility company and the chaos this had caused. ‘No Parking’ bollards had been placed in the High Street parking bays but cars were parking between them. She felt the lack of police presence was noticed as nothing happened to those ignoring the parking restrictions. Councillor Schleip asked if Hadleigh Town Council could employ a Town Warden. The Clerk was asked to investigate and report back. It was felt that until parking was devolved the situation would not improve. REPORTS OF THE COUNTY & DISTRICT COUNCILLORS Babergh District Councillor Campbell had tendered her apologies but provided a written report. County Councillor Fraser had presented a written report. Since writing the report he had been advised that the No. 90 bus service would be extended until the end of March 2019. It was felt that the service needed to be publicised as if it is not used it will be lost. The Clerk was asked to speak to Community Transport and see if any assistance could be provided by the Council. Councillor Grandon had presented a written report. She advised Council that at the previous meeting she had, in good faith, reported that the bench in the Market Place had been ordered but has since been informed that this was not the case. Councillor Dr. Dawson had presented a written report. She advised that she had conducted a survey of approximately 300 residents, with the help of Councillor Fraser, for the choice of Market Place bench and the majority chose option 3. She was asked by Councillor Knock if she could investigate parking issues and the standard of housing in the Timperley Road area. The Chair asked both Councillors to work together on these issues. MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Clerk reported that Councillor Sheldrick had visited the office and spent a long time looking at the documents received from Suffolk County Council regarding the civil parking enforcement. His comments had been submitted as part of the consultation. He had also offered to meet with the Suffolk County Council Officer in the town and walk the area. The Clerk advised that the Gambling Act 2005: Statement of Principles (Revision) had been received and a consultation period was open until the 12th October 2018. The Clerk advised that she had had an informal meeting this afternoon with Kathy Nixon, Strategic Director of Babergh District Council, and Kate Lowe, Engagement Lead. It was a very positive meeting and there was now direct access which would help with communication between the two Councils. The Mayor advised a resident attending the meeting that he was in receipt of his e.mail but could not answer the question raised about the Neighbourhood Plan. The information referred to had been provided to the Town Clerk confidentially. STANDING ORDER NO. 40 Councillor Shearly-Sanders raised the following questions: Cemetery Extension Project 1. Project Documents (a) When does the Mayor expect the Council to receive a full package of Project Documents from Contractors, including but not limited to Construction Contract and supporting Bank Bond for review by Council’s solicitors (as acknowledged by the Mayor at previous meeting) (b) When is a motion to be proposed for the Council’s solicitors to be instructed to review, and report on proposed Project Documents? 2. Timeline When does the Mayor anticipate that the Clerk will be able to give Councillors a draft time line for completion of Project Documents, commencing with receipt of all draft Project Documents from Contractors, review and, if required negotiation by solicitors, reports to Council, Council consideration and, if approved, signing and exchange of Project Documents? 3. Site Suitability and Safety (a) Is the Mayor able to confirm that a Site Suitability Report has been prepared by the relevant members of the Council’s Professional Team? (b) If not, please confirm that the lack of such a report relating to the development has been notified to the Council’s indemnity insurers and they are confirmed that its absence will not affect the validity should any claims arise which could have been avoided if such a report had been obtained? (c) If a Site Suitability Report has been obtained please confirm that – (aa) it relates to the revised specification in connection with the 2017 Planning Permission; and (bb) that it has been supplied to the Council’s indemnity insurers. (d) Please confirm that the proposed Contractor will not be allowed to commence any work on site until there is a health and safety methodology agreed by the Council’s Professional Team and adequate advance warning of start on site has been given to the public, including advance warnings on site, following exchange of Project Documents, and on Council’s website, facebook and notice boards. Councillor Shearly-Sanders was advised that the staff were working on the answers to the questions raised. Councillor Wiltshire asked why the names of Councillors had not been recorded in the minutes when a recorded vote had been requested. She referred to Standing Order 27 which states a recorded vote should include the names. The Clerk apologised for not including this information. It was put forward that the name of the Councillor should, in future, be read out and the Councillor advise for or against. ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £19,966.21 including HMRC, Utilities, SCC Pension Fund and staff salaries be approved for payment. Questions were raised over the payment to the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity, Bullards and Gerald Brown & Sons. Voting was: For: Councillors: Cook, Angland, Loftus, Byrne, Haylock, Fraser, Haines, Free and Matthews. Against: Councillors Knock, Wiltshire, Shearly-Sanders and Schleip PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 23rd August 2018 and 18th September 2018 were noted. SPORTS & OPEN SPACES COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 6th September 2018 was received and accepted. REPRESENTATIVES There were no reports. STANDING ORDERS Councillor Cook advised that the question raised by the
member of the public would be investigated. If it was considered this needed to be added it could be done as an amendment at a later date. This would not prevent the revised standing orders from being approved as the original standing orders are quite out of date. Other Councillors felt that the document was difficult to read. Then Councillor Shearly-Sanders brought a number of suggestions he wanted to see made to the document. The Clerk requested Councillor Shearly-Sanders updates the document with his suggested amendments and bring this to the October meeting for all Councillors to consider. COMMITTEE STRUCTURES The Clerk advised that it had been agreed that once the Council was back to full capacity the Committee Structure would be reviewed. Membership of the Committees would now be: Sports & Open Spaces Committee: Councillors: Byrne (Chair), Fraser, Knock, Schleip, Wiltshire and Shearly-Sanders Environment & Personnel Committee Councillors: Cook (Chair), Angland, Free, Haines, Haylock and Loftus. MARKET PLACE SEAT The Clerk presented three seating options that Babergh District Council had put forward for the Market Place. It was pointed out that option 1 had been agreed back in 2017 following a meeting with Peter Garret of Babergh District Council. This had also been the option of choice by the Steering Group. Voting was 12 for and 1 abstention for Option 1. The Clerk would advise Kathy Nixon, Strategic Director of Babergh District Council as she was personally overseeing this project. LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOUNDARY COMMISSION FOR ENGLAND The Clerk advised that the document was available in the office. Hadleigh will now have three District Councillors – one in the North and two in the South. Fifteen Town Councillors - five in the North and ten in the South. THERE BUT NOT THERE The Clerk provided the information on the products available. The Row Church and St. Mary’s Church would be purchasing their own Tommy’s. Mr. Brennan of the Royal British Legion had submitted a bid for 10 Tommy’s. The closing date for the application was the 1st October. It was agreed that Tommy’s should be sited in the town but this would be brought back to the October meeting to see if Mr. Brennan had been successful with his bid. TOWN MATTERS Councillor Wiltshire reported that Mr. Brennan of the Royal British Legion would be giving a talk on the War Centenary Project on Saturday 6th October in the Guildhall. Annual Civic Service in St. Mary’s Church On Sunday the 23rd September Councillor Peter and Mrs Hilary Matthews, Hadleigh Town Mayor and Mayoress held the Annual Civic Service in St. Mary’s Church. They welcomed the Chairs of the County and District Councils, along with ten Mayors from around the County and a Major from Wattisham, members of the Town Council along with family and friends. The Community Choir took part in the Service which was very well supported. The Mayor should like to thank all those who took part and provided a most enjoyable event.
Pause For Thought The 10th of October was Mental Health Awareness Day. It is estimated that 1 in 4 people in any given year will experience difficulties with their mental health, and approximately 1 in 3 people will experience some issue in their lifetime. Mental health issues are not restricted to one particular type of person, class, race or gender, it is something that can affect anyone. Tragically, the biggest cause of death for men under the age of 35 is suicide, which can often be traced back to problems with mental health. Those who struggled in the past know that just like a physical injury can lead to ongoing weakness and susceptibility to further injury, the same can be true with mental health. Sometimes past darkness can reach into the present. As someone for whom this can be a reality, in those moments, it is faith in something bigger than myself which eventually pulls me out of the dark. The Christian faith does not say, ”There is light at the end of the tunnel if you just keep walking.” It speaks of someone who came as a light in the darkness and who will walk with us through it. That’s something we can all do for others, be a light that walks with them in their darkness. Parish Council The main matters discussed during the meeting of 26 September 2018 were: • District Council report Work was due to commence on a new multi-use games area in Belle Vue Park, Sudbury. The Customer Services ‘pop-up’ in Shotley was proving to be a success and plans were being drawn up to bring it to Hadleigh during October; a member of staff from Babergh would be present one day a week and on other days staff from Hadleigh Town Council would provide assistance; Councillor Ward said information on opening hours etc would be posted on noticeboards. Babergh had commissioned an options and appraisal study from Carter Jonas on the future of the Delphi Industries site in Sudbury; in response to a question from SL, JW confirmed that Carter Jonas had tendered for the work. The planning application in respect of the former Babergh offices in Corks Lane would be submitted shortly. The Chairman praised Babergh and Mid Suffolk’s joint Homelessness Reduction Strategy. • County Council report It was agreed to bring any questions for Councillor Jones to the next meeting. It was noted that the website link www.betterbroadbandsuffolk.com did not appear to be working. • Sign for the top of Water Lane (not suitable for HGVs) The Clerk had received confirmation from SCC Highways that the sign had been ordered and work would be completed within 14 weeks from end September 2018. It was agreed that she would request information on the size and exact location of the sign. • New bin for the playing field It was agreed to purchase a 120 litre wheelie bin to be located near the football goals area. • Planning - The Marquis It was noted that the application for external lighting had been approved, with specific conditions including restrictions on lighting times. • Major review of highways maintenance in Suffolk It was agreed to submit to Suffolk CC the report produced by the working group giving the views of the PC on some of the issues raised. A Remembrance service is held every year – starting at 10.50am beside the war memorial in the burial ground and moving on into the church. It should be an especially poignant occasion this year. Centenary of the end of the First World War St Andrews Church, Lower Layham invite you to visit the church to see their display to commemorate the centenary of the ending of the First World War. This will include not only knitted poppy waterfalls but also WW1 memorabilia. The church will be open from 10 am - 4 pm on Saturday 10th and 2 - 4 pm on Sunday 11th November when refreshments will be available. All money donated will go to the Royal British Legion.

Merchant Navy Day This photograph of the UK Merchant Navy’s official flag, the Red Ensign, flying from the tower of St Andrew’s Church on 2018 Merchant Navy Day was taken by Noel Herring. It is John Cryer (an ex Merchant Navy Officer) who usually climbs the ladder in the tower to raise and lower the flag every year. Since 2000, Merchant Navy Day on 3rd September has honoured the brave men and women who kept our 'island nation' afloat during both World Wars, and celebrated our dependence on modern day merchant seafarers who are responsible for 95% of the UK's imports, including half the food we eat, plenty of the fuel we burn and virtually all the products and goods we take for granted! It seems particularly appropriate to draw attention to this annual commemoration as we approach the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. Layham Green Team ‘Autumn Clean-up’ Once again there was a splendid turn-out of volunteers carrying on the good work started in the spring. As well as litter picking and cleaning road signs, our Autumn Clean-Up on Saturday 20thOctober focussed on clearing away overgrown vegetation from pathways and hedges – this was hard work! We thank the twenty volunteers very much indeed. The photos (by Sheila Roberts) show Amanda and Paul Cartlidge trimming shrubs back in Brett Green and Ron Gunn, Geoff Adams and John Nightingale disposing of grass and weeds that had grown over the pavement. We are also pleased to report less litter to collect and would like to thank those parishioners who routinely pick up litter as they see it. It all makes a real difference! Gates for the Conservation Area Our very good friends George Wyatt and John McLeod from Hadleigh were joined by Anthony Owers and Colin Brown of Layham, a couple of weekends ago, to put up the first two of three gates into the conservation area. The photograph was taken by John Gurr. The intention is to clearly divide our village Nature Reserve from the play area and to encourage more sensitive use of it. Within the next couple of months we hope to have the third gate in place. Co-op Token Scheme If you use the local Coop you will know that, when you pay, you are given a green token which you can post in the box by the door. There are three different local charities named and you can choose which one you support. Layham Playing Field is lucky to be one of the charities featured from October to December. Each of the charities gets a share of £1000 at the end of the period and the sum (up to £500) is determined by the number of tokens posted. Layham Playgroup CIO We concluded the first half term with lots of Autumn fun, playing outside on nice sunny days, and bringing the resources into playgroup on other days. We also took the resources into our crafts, story telling and mathematical learning; studying colour, texture, size and shapes To help us get into the mood for Christmas we will be holding a Christmas Craft And Shopping afternoon on Friday 30th November 4 – 6pm in the village hall. The D.I.Y. Deli Courgette & Chorizo Quiche Special equipment: a 7½ inch flan dish or tin; ceramic baking beans. This recipe is sufficient for a 7½ inch dish but amounts can be increased pro rata for dishes with a larger base area. Ingredients: For the pastry: 3 oz plain flour; 1½ oz unsalted butter; 1½ tablespoons cold water. For the filling: 6-8 small (4-5 inch) courgettes; you can use larger ones but they can cook a bit watery 3 oz sliced Chorizo; it’s worth paying the extra for Iberico Chorizo 3 oz cheese of your choice; strong cheddars work well ¼ pint semi-skimmed milk, medium free range egg Freshly ground black pepper Method 1. To make the pastry take the butter straight from the fridge; dice and rub into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs; sprinkle on water & mix with a flat bladed knife or spatula; knead by hand until the mix forms a ball that leaves the bowl cleanly; wrap the ball in cling film and place it in the fridge for 20 minutes. 2. Cut & discard the ends of the courgettes and use a sharp knife to slice around 3mm thick; place into a sieve and sprinkle on a little salt to extract excess liquid. 3. Lightly grease the flan dish with butter; roll out the pastry and use it to line the dish or tin. Prick the base of the pastry all over with a fork and line the pastry case with greaseproof paper; insert the baking beans into the paper lining; this will prevent the pastry from rising in the middle; bake in a preheated oven at gas 5 or 190ºC 4. While the pastry is cooking rinse the courgettes in cold water; strain and pat dry on absorbent kitchen paper. Fry the slices gently in olive oil until they begin to colour 5. Remove the greaseproof paper together with the beans from the pastry case and arrange the courgette slices evenly on the base of the pastry. Cover with the Chorizo slices and grate the cheese over the top, taking care to avoid the top rim of the pastry. Beat the egg into the milk with a fork and add freshly ground black pepper. Pour the milk/egg mix into the pastry case and bake for around 25 minutes (still at gas 5 or 190ºC) until set and golden on top. Eat hot or cold; serves 4 for lunch with some salad; try it with Mediterranean pasta and tomato salad infused with basil.

Suffolk Rockets Netball Club October has been another busy and popular month at Suffolk Rockets NC, again we have welcomed new junior and adult members to our training sessions, its amazing to see so many girls and ladies wanting to start playing Netball. Our Adult teams are doing amazing in the Colchester league and are improving every match. On the 10th October it was the 10 year 'back to netball' Anniversary, we celebrated at Training with the Suffolk Netball Development Officer Chloe Anderson, Chloe brought cake and goody bags and everyone had a wonderful time! if you are interested in trying Netball please pop along on a Wednesday evening 8-9.30pm Hadleigh High Leisure centre, no need to book, all new players welcome! A huge thank you to Barbara and everyone at The Thrift Shop in Hadleigh for their very generous donation of ÂŁ200 towards our Junior Club, we have expanded hugely this season and have over 50 young people between ages 9-15years, this money will go towards more kit for our team players as well as match balls and first aid kits. The Thrift Shop supports many local groups so please continue to support them by popping into the shop in the centre of Hadleigh. Lola, Tilly, Molly and Eloise visited Barbara to collect the cheque and they chatted all things Netball! On the 14th October some of our Adult players played in a charity netball tournament in Ipswich to raise money for Cancer Research, they had a great day and even got the make up out to dress up as Netball Zombies! the day was a great success with the tournament raising over ÂŁ500. During the season we regularly enter fun tournaments like this and we ask everyone who attends training is they would like to play. At the end of September a Junior team was entered into the Suffolk u14 Tournament at St Josephs school, they had a fantastic morning and finished 5th from 7 teams with 2 wins and losing 4. Congratulations to Abigail Condon and Emily Lawrence on their selections at trial to join the Suffolk Development Netball Academies, we are extremely proud of you! These girls will join our other 9 players in the England Netball Academies. Our Teenies session continues to be a fantastic success, we run a training session on Wednesdays 6pm - 7pm for school years 5 and 6, this is our first season coaching these age groups and so far we have 12 girls who come regularly to train, if your daughter is years 5 or 6 and would like to start playing Netball please email Hayley on the address below. Dear Sir, So sad to read Trev Clarkes piece in last months copy of this excellent journal explaining why he would not be running any more yard sales due to people capitalising on his hard work and running freebie events on the same day. Trev has been a true champion of Hadleigh for many, many years and it saddens me that anyone would take advantage of him in this way. Of course Trev won’t give up, his sort don’t, and I’m sure he will continue to be involved with all sorts of events which will benefit our town. I think I’m right in saying he is chair of HADS at present and the work that they do, in particular encouraging our young people, is invaluable. Dear Sir, In the Sept issue it was suggested by Cllr Grandon that I had made incorrect comments regarding the Market Square bench. Before I submit my monthly reports each is thoroughly researched and correct prior to submission. Cllr Grandon has now made a full public apology at Town Council for her error and misleading Members. As I previously and correctly advised, Peter Garrett from Babergh Environment displayed a number of images to the Steering Group who selected a design. Unfortunately this was not considered suitable, as a survey of over 300 residents confirmed 297 preferred a bench that faced outwards with a back and 3 supported the design described by Cllr Grandon last month. In light of this I have requested Mr Garrett takes the survey results which were conclusive and present the ‘People’s Choice’ of design to Town Councillors where it will be ratified shortly and then an order can be placed in due course. Hadleigh Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) Active Wellbeing Service - Inactive2Active Physical activity is one of the very best things that we can do to keep feeling well and making the most of life. This is especially true for those of us who are already under the weather or feeling our age. After all being able to lift another 15kg at the gym is great but being able to lift up your grandchild or get to the shops for the first time in a year – now that’s life changing! From October there’s a new service, Inactive2Active, to help us get more physically active. Anyone, who currently isn’t active on a regular basis, can sign up but it’s especially suitable for those of us, who have a chronic condition, are getting on a bit or who are feeling a little low or stressed. Did you know that moving more is one of the very best ways to help improve your mental health? The first step is to see Janet Lawrence, from Suffolk Support, who will be holding sessions on Tuesdays at both Hadleigh and Boxford. Janet is a Physical Activity Advisor who will discuss your medical history, any barriers to being active and offer possible solutions. She will also discuss how you can get more movement into your everyday life. If you are interested in taking part in more structured activity such as going to a class, Janet will provide you with an activity menu with over 130 local, low intensity and quality checked activities such as walking groups, swimming and other aqua options, chair-based classes, tai chi, walking football, gym referrals, pilates and yoga (which can also be chair based) to name but a few. There are also various cardiac and cancer specific classes to aid in rehabilitation and the road back to health and fitness. She will also encourage you (she’s great at encouragement) and get you over those first steps that make us all a bit anxious. This could mean her booking you a place (usually as a free taster), linking you up with a buddy who could meet you at the door, finding out what you need to wear, parking arrangements etc. Seeing Janet is free and adding more movement into your daily life or taking part in walking activities costs nothing. If you choose to attend a class there will be a charge but the activities on the menu have been kept as low as possible with some as little as £2 So what’s not to like? 50th Anniversary Celebration On Monday 8th October we celebrated our 50th Anniversary of the opening of our current building. We invited visitors to have a guided tour around our school, looking at the work produced by the children and see them learning in a variety of ways. Our Reception class was open to children and their parents who will be joining us in September 2019.
During the afternoon, we opened our doors and welcomed past students, staff and governors and friends of the school to celebrate with the children.

We were joined by Andrea King’s Upbeat Contemporary Choir who entertained us all with a selection of songs and poetry from the 60’s.

Peace at Last
In this article we remember: Walter Mower 7 November 1918 John William Betts 17 November 1918 The people of Hadleigh reading the Daily Mirror’s front page headlines each day in early November 1918 were seeing the Great War drawing to a close. One headline followed the next; ‘TURKEY GOES OUT OF THE WAR’, ‘WHAT IS LEFT OF AUSTRIA SUBMITS TO ALLIES’ and ‘BEGINNING OF THE END OF GERMAN MILITARISM’. On the Western Front despite the enormous strength of the Allies and with the German Army having no option but to retreat, the Kaiser remained intransigent. Then on 9 November the German Chancellor Max von Baden unilaterally proclaimed the abdication Kaiser Wilhelm II and two days later the war was over with the headline; ‘DEMOCRACY TRIUMPHS OVER LAST OF AUTOCRATS’. Or as the editorial of the Suffolk and Essex Free Press succinctly put it, ‘Germany had plucked up courage to take Kaiserism by the beard and haul it from the seat of authority.’ At 5.15 am on 11 November, Matthias Erzberger, German Minister without Portfolio, signed the uncompromising document that would prevent his country continuing the war. The Armistice would take effect from the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. At 11 the guns fell silent on the Western Front and in Hadleigh it was Monday and it was Market Day and the church clock which had been silent struck the hour and the church bells in the tower rang out across the town. In the evening the Hadleigh Baden Powell Scouts bugle and drum band paraded before a service of thanksgiving held in the parish church. Letters were soon arriving in Hadleigh telling the stories. Typical is one from Harry Sillitoe of 15th Suffolks, “I feel grand and in the best of spirits from the knowledge that the fighting is finished and peace will shortly be proclaimed. I shall never forget Monday November 11. We were just moving off from one of the finest towns in Belgium when the news came through. The advance was postponed for a few hours and our band struck up; ‘We wound up the Watch on the Rhine.’ The British Tommies and Belgians started dancing. Flags were hung out at every window and all our boys had little flags or rosettes pinned on our tunics.” To the very end of the war men were dying, although in November 1918 the two deaths of Hadleigh men were the result of influenza. Air Mechanic Walter Mower was born in February 1895 in Aldham in the area of Wolves Wood close to the Hadleigh parish border and in 1911 was working as a horseman on a farm. He was mobilised, probably as a result of the Lord Derby Scheme on 9 February 1916 and seems to have elected to see service with the Royal Navy Air Service as an Air Mechanic. From March to October 1916 he was stationed at Dunkirk in France. In August

A champion figure skater, an archaeologist as well as the author of the much loved Mapp & Lucia novels. These are set in his loosely disguised home town of Rye. With sharply satirical portraits, his literary style delivered venom & animosity in elegant prose. ROGER ASKEW has combined a Teaching career with that of a Professional singer. He was a chorister at Wells Cathedral School & choral scholar at Magdalen College, Oxford. 46

1917, he was stationed at Tresco Island in the Isles of Scilly, where flying boats patrolled the western approaches to the English Channel and provided escorts to naval convoys. At the end of April 1918, Walter was transferred from the Navy to the newly formed Royal Air Force. Like so many he contracted influenza in 1918 and died of pneumonia on 7 November. His body was brought home for burial and on 12 November a military funeral took place at Aldham church and he was laid to rest in the church yard. A firing party from C Company of the 5th Volunteer Battalion Suffolk Regiment lead the procession to the church and formed up outside the porch with arms reversed, while an RAF aircraft flew slowly overhead. The grave today is marked by a private stone presumably erected by family before the CWGC headstones were introduced. There was an error in the official documents and Walter Mower’s name appears as Frederick Mower on Hadleigh War Memorial. Quartermaster-Sergeant John William Betts was born in Hadleigh in 1894 the son of John Betts a maltster’s foreman. The family lived in New Cut and then Malting Cottages that once stood off Station Road near to the current entrance to Wilson Road. He was a keen member of the Scouts. In 1912 he enlisted with the 5th Suffolk territorials but soon after on his eighteenth birthday, discharged and re-enlisted as a regular soldier in the 2nd Suffolks. He was promoted within the first six months and was at the Curragh in Ireland at the outbreak of war. On 15 August 1914 he was in France and took part in the battle of Mons. He remained with the battalion in Flanders in the Ypres Salient, through the second battle of Ypres in April 1915, when gas was used for the first time. On 29 April 1916 he was wounded at Kemmel and evacuated back to Britain. He spent six months in King George’s Hospital London before being discharged from the Army in November. He found employment first at Ipswich Post Office and then at the Aeroplane factory of Ransomes and Rapier in Ipswich. He contracted influenza on 5 November 1918 and lived one week into the Armistice before he died of pneumonia. QMS John William Betts had a military funeral which started from his home in Station Road led by 5th Suffolks Volunteer Battalion. As the cortege made its way to the cemetery, the boys from the Bridge Street school lined the street to pay their respects. A large congregation gathered by the grave side and the service ended with three volleys discharged by the firing party. Like Walter Mower the family pre-empted the CWGC and erected their own stone over the grave, which also remembers John’s younger brother Private Charles Haddon Betts who died of wounds in 1917 and who lays in Etaples Cemetery in France. Both brothers are remembered on Hadleigh War memorial. Five Hadleigh Hares Ironmen for 2018 This year five Hares took the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and marathon challenge, including first timer, Sara Taylor-Balls. Sara joined Pat Atwood to compete at Copenhagen in August while September saw Leon and Jake Hayward travelling with Andrew Stewart to Ironman Wales. Copenhagen is a beautiful city and the race takes advantage of both the city and the surrounding countryside. The swim is in a lagoon spanned by bridges which throng with noisy spectators. The bike course is a twisty and technical double loop north of the city and the run is through the picturesque old town and the harbour of Copenhagen. PAT: It was a 4 am start, the Metro so crowded with potential Ironmen, that the doors wouldn't shut. Everyone serious, this was no holiday. Looking over the lagoon the buoys were incredibly far away, and almost invisible. Six swimmers at a time raced into the cold lagoon. I had cramp towards the end but at least I avoided the jellyfish. The cycle ride was amazing, through the city, over some cobbles, then up the coast. It was very scenic, but no time to enjoy the view as you just have to keep going. Then “only” the marathon to go. After 17 miles it was time to walk. Slowly. Suddenly my daughter appeared having finished hours before. Come on Mum, time is short. You've got to run. Fast. 6 miles to go, and only an hour left. I had to sprint. It was tough, but I finished just 11 minutes before the final cut off. SARA: My race did not go to plan. Cramp in the swim, a painful back on the bike and a nightmare run due to severe indigestion. With eight miles to go my son cracked the whip. I was feeling pretty dizzy as I hadn’t been able to eat or drink for the past six hours. I made a super-human effort and started a slow jog, but still wasn’t going to make the 16 hour cut off. Feeling more and more despondent I had a mouthful of coke and felt better. I sprinted the last three miles and made it! Thank God! Tenby is proud of its Ironman, which is considered the hardest in Europe, embracing the day by turning it into one long party. The support is phenomenal with crowds lining the streets on the bike route, at times crushing in on both sides, and crowding the Tenby run course in a cacophony of boisterous support. Andrew, Leon and Jake all exited a kinder than expected swim fresh for the bike section through the beautiful Pembrokeshire National Park. Being Pembrokeshire there was over 8000ft of climbing with steep gradients and fast, narrow descents. The run is a beast. Uphill for two miles, down, and around the twisty town streets - repeated four times. Andrew and Jake both had difficult runs, battling the effects of unfamiliar nutrition and cramp, but all three Hares finished with good respectable times with Leon just going over the 11 hour mark – a huge achievement on such a brutal course. It takes eight months of intense training to prepare for Ironman; training up to twenty hours per week to build fitness and endurance. The challenge is immense but so is the sense of achievement. It is both life affirming and life changing, proving that ‘Anything Is Possible’.

Wed 20 Nov Sergt Ben Richardson “B” Company 1/5th Suffolk Regiment third son of Mr and Mrs Maurice Richardson of Sproughton, late of Hadleigh, has been awarded the Military Medal whilst on active service with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in Palestine. The recipient of this honour, who previously was in the employ of Mr G F Letts nurseryman, took part in the Gallipoli campaign. Three of his brothers are also serving in His Majesty’s Forces. Wed 27 Nov The members of the RAF stationed at Hadleigh held a whist drive and dance at the Town Hall on Friday evening November 23rd. The interior of the building was elaborately decorated and some ingenuity was displayed in the arrangements of various parts of aeroplanes amid the profusion of flags. A large bomb dropped close to the aerodrome from a Zeppelin in October of last year attracted a good deal of attention.

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre It would happen that our ‘Own A Pony Day’ took place on the wettest Saturday in October. However nine of our riders came to learn about stable management, tack cleaning, catching and leading in their ponies and, luckily, getting a ride down by the river before they were completely wet through. The nine horses and ponies were shocked at being asked to hack out in the rain and made their feelings known, which was a bit naughty of them. It’s lucky for them that we live in 2018. A hundred years ago every horse and pony was at work, come rain or shine, and no nonsense about it. Would they have noticed that the war had ended, I wonder? Horses, mules, camels, dogs, and homing pigeons, to mention just a few animals, were all made to risk their lives in WW1. Just before we all solemnly remember the end of that dreadful conflict there’s time to have a great laugh at our upcoming race night on 10th November. This is a hugely popular evening at Nayland Village Hall. Tickets cost £12.50, and include a fish & chips supper. There is a tote, which makes the ‘horses’ even more hotly followed, and the competitive atmosphere generates a lot of noise and laughter. Bring a gang of friends to test their skills racing wooden models along a taught string. Sounds easy? Ha ha, just you try! We work hard here to save riders and their coaches feeling thwarted; sometimes success happens in very small almost invisible steps but a quick glance over one’s shoulder reminds us that progress is happening. Recently the autistic child who simply refused to go near a horse actually sat on the ramp and stroked Alfie’s muzzle, neck and withers. The boy had been coming here for 6 weeks, so this was a milestone for him and us. (He has had a ride on me, but I have to admit, I’m not as terrifying as a live pony.) Talk about have your cake and eat it! You should have seen the yummy selection at our Hintlesham sale last month, all baked and donated by talented supporters. I was only allowed a tiny taste due to my dicky tummy but I did get my usual cup of tea! We were made most welcome by the locals and over £950 was raised for the animals. Our last event of 2018 is our Christmas Fair at the Old School, Long Melford, CO10 9DX. Doors open 10am, Sunday 18th November, get there early before they sell out! Mum and the volunteers have been kept busy with a doggy family after cross breed terrier sisters, Hinge and Bracket arrived. Hinge promptly produced with four tiny pups, two have gone to a lovely human family, leaving their siblings, Nut and Bolt to be homed. Mum and Auntie, the inseparable sisters, are also available. They are between two and three years old with lovely personalities, unlike poor old Jack, the Westie cross, who needs an understanding home. He is a bit of a grump but deserves a chance to be happy and loved. Ollie says please keep your pets safe during Hallowen and Bonfire night. As a black cat, he is particularly wary of the spooky season and we animals all dread the fireworks around 5th November. Hadleigh & District Invitation Summer League Darts Finals and Presentation Night The Hadleigh summer league darts finals were held at the Royal British Legion on Monday 1st October 2018. A decent crowd of between 70 and 80 people attended these finals and they were treated to some terrific darts, which included maximum 180's and some top class finishing. 12 teams contested the Knock Out cup (KO), along with 12 pairs and 12 singles from their respective pub/club. The Cockney Rebels produced a clinical display in the final beating the George 3-0 to win the KO Cup. Simon Farthing (Bimby) partnered Ainsley Moult to victory in the pairs final with a 2-1 win over Stuart King and Glenn Bentley. The singles title went to the George's Colin Hynard who beat Cockney Rebels star Tom King 2-1 in a classy final. Hadrian found alive and well I am very pleased to say we have found Hadrian our cat! It’s thanks to the Community News, as he was 10 miles away and I do believe without placing our ad he wouldn't have been found! Hadrian went missing August 18th 2016. Apparently he had been 10 miles away making his way around village roof tops finding food and getting comfort in different homes before settling down for a while. A BIG THANKYOU to everyone in Hadleigh who has been looking out for MR H. over the past few weeks, for putting up with me shaking biscuits and shouting loudly for Hadrian over and over again down streets and many leaflets through peoples doors! Library Life: Here be Dragons! One of the most exciting things about libraries, is that they really can transport anyone, anywhere. Of course, I don’t mean that we librarians have access to a secret time travelling device, but rather that, books and the stories within them, are not restrained to any time or place; fact or fiction. Upon our shelves, we have worlds and characters just waiting to be discovered and enjoyed and sometimes, we can offer you the chance to get some real insight into how these amazing narratives come into being. On Saturday 17th November, 2018, we are excited to be hosting an author signing at Hadleigh Library from 10:30-12:30. East Anglian writer, Katharine Eccles Horn will be joining us to talk about her new book, ‘Dragons on Ice,’ a sequel to ‘Dogs Can’t Fly’. In her new tale, eleven-year-old Danny receives a new mischievous pet and together the two head off on an adventure which leads them to another world, one which is ruled by warring dragons. We have recently finished the Summer Reading Challenge and it was a pleasure for us to hear so many enthusiastic young readers come in and talk to us about the books that they had chosen. Our visit from Katharine, is a wonderful opportunity to learn about how an inspired idea can become a fullyfledged book. Whatever genre it is you enjoy, there is bound to be something at the library that will give you the pleasure of reading and everyone is always welcome to come and browse, ask for advice or simply settle in on the sofa and be transported to other worlds between the pages of a good book. Hadleigh Hares September kicked off with success for one of our triathletes. Lizzie Stewart took part in the European Standard Distance qualifier at St Neots on Saturday 2nd successfully qualifying to compete for Great Britain in Holland next year. Congratulations to her. September 3rd saw Elizabeth Jeeves and Andrew and Elaine Turner venturing to the Lake District to tackle John Scaife proudly wearing his the brutal Helvellyn Triathlon. Elaine National colours at the Chester says: “Race day arrived with typical Marathon damp and claggy weather. Ullswater provided a beautiful setting for a mile swim before heading out on the bikes for a 38 mile loop around the Lakes including Kirkstone Pass and a scary decent into Glenridding. The 9 mile “run” up and down Helvellyn was shrouded in fog making navigation challenging but a few brave marshals hiding out in tents kept us on track. The following weekend, eight Hares lined up for the Langham 10k. First home was Dan Widdowson in 37:14, taking 13th place overall. Less than two minutes behind him was Aden Bell with Simon Fenn and Paul Ballard finishing together to give Paul a new personal best at 44:42. Paul Lacey, Steve Hunt and Paul McAllister completed the men’s line up while our sole lady, Joanne Abbott came in to finish in a credible 1:08:25. Not happy with a terrific performance at Langham, Dan Widdowson went on to better his time at Dedham on 16th. This time he completed the 10km course in 36:57. Compatriots Simon Fenn and Steve Hunt also took part and finished well in 43:30 and 49:54 respectively. The Felixstowe 10 mile makes its way along the seafront and makes best use of the cliffs towards Felixstowe Ferry. This year seven Hares took part, the first home being Maria Ward in 1:14:25. Two sets of two followed her in, Glyn Williams and Caitlin Fosker finishing at just over 1:21:30 and Karl Feagan and Kay Oxford who crossed the line at 1:25:40. Shortly after them came Paul McAllister and Amanda Dunn. The Club Sprint Triathlon Championship took place at Stowmarket on 23rd September in appallingly wet and windy conditions. Of nine who took part, first Hare home was Leon Hayward in a storming 58:13 taking 3rd overall. Our first lady was Lizzie Stewart in 1:11:50. A good contingent of Hadleigh Hares made the trip to Chester for the marathon on 7th October, among them John Scaife who writes: “Hadleigh Hares were represented at the scenic and undulating Chester Marathon. All four who entered had struggled with injuries leading up to the event meaning training was very limited but all were determined to make the start line. The course starts at Chester Racecourse and weaves through the city before heading out to Wales and back again. There were some tough hills to negotiate especially in the second half of the race. John Scaife running for England in the Marathon Masters finished in 3:08. Rachel Bodsworth broke the sub 4 hour barrier again in 3:55 and Katrina Rigby had a strong run given her injuries to finish in 4:22. Amanda Dunn, also recovering from injury, completed the Metric Marathon (26.2k) and ran a PB to finish in 2:38.” Only one Hare finished the usually popular Great Notley Autumn Duathlon this year. A mix of end of season fatigue, accident and conflicting commitments meant that Deb Stewart was our only finisher! A final note about the coming Hadleigh 5 and 10 mile races on November 18th. We are pleased to announce that the adult races are now sold out but that there are still some spaces left in the Junior event. If there are any young runners out there who fancy a go, its not too late! If you are in Hadleigh on race day, why not come down and cheer on the competitors?

October has been a busy month for The Dolphins with our annual Club Championships. This is a great chance for our swimmers to pit themselves against their usual training partners and always makes for some very exciting races! As usual, Personal Best times were bettered and a few Club and Championship records were broken for good measure. Club Champs is also the chance for our novice swimmers to experience a competitive environment or to try some new events in the supportive surroundings of their own club. This year, professional pictures were kindly taken by Warren from Page Pix Sports and the results are terrific. President’s Day at Hadleigh Tennis Club One of the most popular events in the Tennis Club calendar is President’s Day where our President Peter Richards hosts a special tournament followed by lunch. There was a quiz too; who knew the grass at Wimbledon is cut to a precise 8.00mm? The rules were designed to make the tournament accessible and fun for all and it certainly was. That’s not to say it wasn’t competitive. Points were won and lost and Bryan Walls emerged as overall winner of the trophy. If you are a lapsed tennis player and want to get back into it you would be welcome at any of our Club Play sessions. If you haven’t played before we can also help you to get some coaching. The floodlit all weather courts are located at Layham Road Sports Ground next to the rugby club with “Club Play” sessions for members on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm and Sunday mornings from 10.00am. Undefeated Rams Top the Table Hadleigh Rugby’s great season on and off the pitch has continued through October. A well drilled, miserly defence has seen this youthful side concede just 18 points in five matches. Ruthless finishing at the other end resulted in 198 points being scored. The most notable victory thus far was a hard fought 375 away victory over a strong Colchester team. The key to Hadleigh’s success seems to be the enthusiasm and willingness to work hard in training. Head Coach Adam Miles believes that the commitment during the week is starting to bear fruit on Match Days. He is confident that the Club will continue to progress and make a serious push for promotion in the New Year. New or returning players and social members are always welcome. Colchester III The Youth and Minis sections are now well into their season. A highlight was on 14th October when a mixed age Tournament involving over 300 players from Hadleigh, Stowmarket and Maldon filled Layham Road almost to bursting. A huge thank you goes out to all the players, coaches, parents and volunteers who made the day such a great success.

Also John Day has been made a Vice President of the Club. First Team The First Team have had mixed results over the past few matches. Having played well against Godmanchester taking a two goals lead, we succumbed to a defeat as Godmanchester scored four second half goals to inflict a 4-2 defeat . Next up a trip to Thetford saw us go 3 goals down after 20 minutes , we did rally in the second half creating chances but failed to find the net. A Friday night trip to Walsham le Willows saw us take the lead, but we only held on to this for six minutes when the hosts levelled. Level at half expectations from the travelling supporters were that we could at least get a worthy point, but Walsham scored twice more to see us lose 3-1 on the night. Friday the 13th is unlucky for some, but a 13th on a Saturday proved lucky for us as we hosted Ely City taking the lead just on half time and a late second after goal saw us win 2-0 and three valuable points on the table. Tuesday 16th October saw us host local rivals Brantham Athletic, we took the lead in this match on 20minutes and took this slender lead in at half time, but Brantham pressed in the second half scoring two goals to see them take the points. In the last two matches (Ely & Brantham) the team have played some attractive football which is worthy of watching despite the reults. Reserves An away trip to Haverhill on September 22nd saw the Reserves run out worthy winners scoring 4 goals without conceding. 29th September we hosted Witham Town Res this match was a tight affair which saw Witham eventually run out winners with a 2-1 victory. October 6th Claydon Reserves were the visitors for a first round Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup match despite their lower league status Claydon may us fight hard for the victory which saw the score goalless at the interval. Hadleigh's fitness showed in the second half as we ran out 3-0 winners. Under 18 (matches played midweek) A long trip to Dereham for an F.A. Youth Cup match saw us lose 3-1 on the night. On the 3rd October we hosted Framlingham Town and got back to winning ways with a fine 2-0 victory. Next up a trip to Woodbridge to play Coplestonians, in this match we put "Cops " under the sword running out 8-1 winners and in the process going top on the Thurlow Nunn Central Youth League. Wednesday 17th Whitton were the visitors in a tough encounter we ran out 2-0 winners to cement our place as League leaders Veterans (matches played on Sundays) A visit to "The Police" Yes Suffolk Police do have a team saw no arrests on the day as the outcome of the match was a 1-1 draw. On 30th September we hosted Framlingham which saw us run out 5-1 winners on the day. Two cup matches then followed which saw defeats in each losing 6-2 at Stowupland in the Suffolk Vets Cup, then a 2-0 defeat at Blackboys (Bury St Edmunds) in the Over 40's Cup.
