May 18th - 25th sees our annual campaign to raise awareness of what can be done to support people living with dementia in Hadleigh. Most of us know that dementia can make life very difficult for people and for their family carers and one of the biggest worries is not knowing how people will respond if they meet in the shops or around the town. But most of us are unsure how best we can help and the week is an opportunity to find out more, to ask questions and to find out what you can do, whether as a business, voluntary or social group, or neighbour. Hadleigh During The Second World War - A New Book 6
Eighty years ago, Hadleigh and the rest of the country found itself at war. The town HADLEIGH DURING was then a small community, still WORLD WAR TWO agriculturally based, with its maltings, corn 1939 - 1945 mills, blacksmiths and farriers. Although The Home Front Story the dark clouds of war had been developing during the 1930s Hadleigh carried on as it always had with its weekly live and deadstock market held on a Monday. This then was the town, but soon Hadleigh men were being recruited under the Urban District Council for Air-Raid Precautions (A.R.P.) training. The military in the late 1930s built the huge army Compiled by Roger Kennell workshops complex at the lower end of Boswell Lane. This was the largest building in the town, with both soldiers and vehicles coming and going. On Sunday 3rd September 1939 was declared on Nazi Germany. Thus what life like in the town during 1939 – 1945? The evacuees arriving, a military presence, the ‘Dump’ and air-raids, then later a new influence on the town when at nearby Raydon the American airfield was constructed and became operational, all this combined causing Hadleigh to become a changed town. A new booklet titled ‘Hadleigh During the Second World War – The Home Front Story’ has been researched and will be launched at an exhibition to be held on Saturday 20th July 2019 at St. Mary’s Church, Hadleigh. Free admission, but the event is to raise funds for the Friends of St. Mary’s Church who assists in providing funds to maintain this fine medieval building. Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics Club We have welcomed over 100 new children into the club since Christmas and we hope that they have enjoyed learning lots of new gymnastics skills. During the school holidays we ran workshops on specific skills and fun play sessions which proved extremely popular. The term has been a busy one for our elite gymnasts, with 27 passing their County grade and 29 competing in the County general gymnastics competition. A special congratulations goes to the 7 girls who have qualified for Regional finals in general gymnastics and we wish them luck in June. Twenty of our coaches took part in a CPD session run by former head coach of South Essex Gymnastics Club, Matt Jackson. It was a great afternoon and we are looking forward to using new coaching ideas with all of our gymnasts during the Summer term. This term we are excited to be offering “Baby stars�, our new pre-school class for 18 months - 3 year olds. It is a coach lead, semi-structured class, which allows parents to participate, learn and interact with their little ones through gymnastics. The class is on Thursday 11:45am - 12:30pm, for more information please call us. As you will recall, I moved to these parts from Pinner in Middlesex and soon commenced in business in Hadleigh. It is sad that with such an obsession with the internet, businesses such as mine will be few and far between in the years to come. And yet, it is a firm like mine where one receives personal service and not some faceless experience when a different person answers the telephone every time you ring, that is, if anyone answers at all. The picture shows me with Michael Jarvis (the proprietor) in the workshops of Michael Jay Tailoring at Tomo Business Park IP14 5EP in Stowmarket Tel. 01449 614602. I do enjoy my clothes and Michael Jay Tailoring with a pedigree in military tailoring are able to create lovely jackets with various different trims, facings and linings. So, should you need a new suit or an unusual tuxedo for that special occasion or at the Captain’s Table do telephone Michael or Janice Jarvis at Michael Jay. The jacket that I am wearing is made of yellow and baby blue silk and I can guarantee I will not see another. It is at this time of year that Frank, my chauffeur likes to get out in the grounds of the Gibbons’ residence whilst Maria my housekeeper Spring cleans the various wings. Frank has been tinkering with Maria’s water feature which now has plenty of pressure. I recently went to see a friend in Northampton and en route, Frank called at Milton Keynes’ Station to collect another of the party. He is big in outer space and is in fact a planetary inspector. People at large are always surprised that a conveyancing transaction takes on average 3 months from start to finish. Where there is a chain, one is always dependent upon someone else to have done something. There are so many interests that can exist in one parcel of land and that is why it is important to have the work carried out in a competent fashion. As I was told in my days as an articled clerk “there are no short cuts in law�. Please approach us for your needs in buying or selling a house or commercial property or dealing with leases for the same. If you have not made a Will or a Lasting Power of Attorney then do get in touch. Hadleigh Show Programme Cover Winner Chosen The winner of the 2019 Hadleigh Show Programme cover competition has been announced. Each year Hadleigh Farmers’ Agricultural Association ask local primary schools to design a front cover for the Hadleigh Show programme. This year’s theme was “If I were a Farmer…” The overall winner was Kiano, aged 6, from Beaumont Community Primary School and his winning entry will be printed on the 2019 Show programme. Lucy Batchelor-Wylam, HFAA education liaison officer said “Kiano’s friendly scarecrow, strong use of colour and charming cow certainly won over the judges this year!” The 3 runners up came from St Mary’s in Hadleigh, Boxford and Bildeston Primary Schools. The top 14 covers will be on display in the Education Tent at the Show on 18th May where the theme this year is “Your Sunday Dinner”.

The clocks have gone forward, bikes are being dusted off and the lanes around Hadleigh are littered with spring flowers. Hadleigh Cycling Club is back on the road with events for everyone! Sunday club rides start from The George car park at 8.0am. These are social rides of between 20 and 40 miles. Everyone is welcome and no one gets left behind, including capable children accompanied by an adult. If enough people turn up we can spilt into two groups, one for those who prefer a gentle ride and one for those who want a faster ride. Weather dependent – check the website, Facebook or Twitter if in doubt. Monday evening rides have started again from the High School at 6.30pm. These are gentle rides for 1 to 1 1/2 hrs, particularly for those new to riding on road in a group. For Club riders, there are also rides at a range of speeds on Thursday evenings, Friday morning and Saturdays. If you prefer to cycle alone there are lots of suggested routes on the Club’s website: https://www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk/club-routes The Club’s Junior programme runs on Wednesday evenings at 6.00 pm at Hadleigh Community Primary School, The Junior Club provides training from British Cycling qualified coaches in a variety of cycling techniques. And the answer is No. Pilates is technically difficult; it requires you to achieve and maintain good form and posture whilst moving through a range of exercises. With a growing number of elite and professional sportsmen making Pilates part of their training regimes, the benefits of ‘Pilates for Men’ is an increasingly common subject for debate. The benefits will vary, but for most people, whether a sedentary office worker or an elite athlete including Premier League Footballers and the England Cricket Team to name a few, incorporating Pilates into their training regime delivers improvement in a number of areas; muscle strength and control, balance, flexibility and injury prevention. If I had a pound for every time I heard somebody say ‘I sing in the shower, but I can’t sing’, I would be exceedingly rich by now! As a member of Hadleigh Community Choir, I sing in the shower, the car, wherever, because singing is extremely therapeutic, and when you use muscles to deliver the notes, you can even lose weight while having fun! We are a friendly bunch at the choir which, if you will pardon the cliché, does what it says on the tin. Meeting for a 7.30 pm start on a Thursday at Hadleigh United Reformed Church, Market Square, the choir is based in Hadleigh and embraces everyone from the community and surrounding areas. If you are around on Monday 13th May, you might even get the opportunity to hear us in action at the Hadleigh Steering Group meeting, held at the Leisure Centre at 4.15pm, together with a talk from co-founder of the choir Simon Thompson. Hadleigh Good Neighbour Scheme With the assistance of Community Action Suffolk, Hadleigh is considering launching a Good Neighbour Scheme aimed at helping to make life easier for people. The scheme is for all age groups including older people, new parents and people just moved to the town. You may need helpfrom the scheme, or perhaps you may like to volunteer to help others? Volunteers can use the scheme too. A Good Neighbour Scheme revolves around a group of volunteers who can help in a number of ways: How the scheme works: • A core group of volunteers take turns to hold the Schemes mobile phone • They are backed up by a larger team of volunteers who agree to help in one or more ways such as shopping, minor household repairs, help with pets, form filling/help with computer, helping with a one off garden tidy, befriending, transport, or holding the phone on a rota basis. • Each call is matched to an appropriate volunteer who is available on the date required and has skills necessary for the requested task. • The volunteer comes round at the agreed time and day to assist the resident as requested. We already have a group of local volunteers working together with Community Action Suffolk on the steering committee and our first job is to conduct a survey to see who might use the scheme and who might volunteer. Coast 2 Coast Challenge - Why would anyone walk 192 miles and climb 27,000 feet which is the height of Everest? Four friends Jimmy, Jim, Anthony and Richard will be taking on the challenge of walking from the West Coast to East Coast in aid of Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance .The walk starts in St Bees, on the West Coast of Cumbria and finishes at Robin Hoods Bay on the East Coast of Yorkshire, travelling through the Lake District, crossing the Pennines at Shap then onwards across the North Yorkshire Moors to Robin Hood Bay. The walk was developed by that famous walker Alfred Wainwright. Tracey Loynds, from Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance spent some time talking with all four walkers to find out more about the walkers and what has inspired them to get involved. Jimmy Wilding the ‘ringleader’ whose original idea it was to take on the challenge said “we are four men from Hadleigh with a combined age of nearly 300 years! We will start the walk on June 16th and we are hoping to arrive at Robin Hoods Bay 12 days later, on two of the days we will have to walk over 20 miles. We plan to post on the “Visit Hadleigh” and “Hadleigh Dementia Friends” Facebook Page each day with details of our great adventure. Although Richard and I said some while ago we would like to walk the C2C in many ways I wish now I wasn’t. My wife Margaret and I have been living with her dementia for several years. It really is a cruel disease which slowly takes away a person’s personality and faculties. With the help of many wonderful people and lots of prayers from others, she is still able to live at home. No cure short term seems likely but prevention is a possibility, albeit a long way off” Richard Groom said “JW and I first spoke about doing the C2C walk - not really having a clue what it actually entailed- a couple of years ago and were very pleased when Jim and Anthony asked to join. I’m hoping that this challenge will help to raise lots of money for a charity that is close to my heart for various reasons” Anthony Foster said “We lived in Hadleigh for the past two and a half years whilst Sue was under training as a Curate. Jimmy mentioned he wanted to do something before his 80th. Coast to coast was spoken about and it took me back 50 years when a group of youngsters from my own town of Scarborough took on the ‘said’ walk for their Duke of Edinburgh’s award. Being one of only two who had a car, I was asked to drive between the Hostels with luggage. When the opportunity arose I took to putting the boots on and did a little walking, so this is a great chance to go from one side to the other.” Jim Sephton explained “I love walking in mountainous and remote places, they make me feel more alive and in touch with nature so the idea of walking through some fantastic scenery was too good to miss…. Not Just A Strictly Annual Event! Apologies for the late delivery of an update – I had the small matter of a family bereavement to deal with, and it has not been easy. Nevertheless, back now. So, what have we been up to since we last met? The Christmas Present Trust catered for 111 people on Christmas Day, (115 if you count the takeaways!). Simon (Master of the Sprouts) and I continue to be grateful for the support from the Hadleigh community, bearing in mind that he was not solely responsible for peeling and cooking 45 kg of seasonal vegetables! The event is currently in its 5th year (Yay! Happy Birthday to us) and we appear to be growing in numbers with every successive occasion. To help us celebrate, we cordially invite anybody who has volunteered their services at any of the last four events to join us for ‘what I call’ a Reunion Reduction. This is an opportunity for a get together (drinks and nibbles will be provided, of course!) but we also need to sift through our collection of lights, decorations etc. and decide as a team what we should keep for future use and what can be recycled within the community. Water Antics Ahoy! Are you one of Hadleigh’s finest? Prove yourself by getting a team together for the Great Hadleigh Duck and Raft Race. Taking place on 9th June, this annual self-wetting and splashing on the River Brett is the stuff of legend – the Cup bears the proud engraving of fabulous past teams – including last year’s Spirit of Fitness winners. Presented at the After Race party at The George (official race pub), bathe in the adoration of your community! The Duck Race precedes the finals of the Rafting – tickets for your own piece of Poultry Plastic are available from Keith Avis Newsagents, Scout leaders, The George or have a chat with us when we’re outside Partridges. No live feathered ducks are harmed in the staging of this event – though as spectators they seem fairly enthusiastic. The racing (plastic) ducks are all under a strict fitness regime and will be in prime condition come Sunday 9th. Teams wearing fancy dress generate more support from the watching crowds – be brave and bold in your choice of swimwear. Life vests are available if wanted and Scouts and their Leaders will be ensuring safety from accompanying canoes. Registration forms are available at The George, with teams of up to 6 allowed (enabling changes between heats or super-powering the raft with muscle). We ask for a £10 donation to Scouts from each team. First race is at 10am on Sunday 9th June near Toppesfield Bridge. Sizzling sausages, golden browned burgers and other Scouting refreshments will be available. Scouting is flourishing in Hadleigh - come and support us on 9th June and if interested in getting involved talk to our leaders.
Hadleigh Orchestra Conductor: Kay Bartlett Our summer concert will take place in St. Mary’s, Hadleigh on Sunday June 9th. at 6.30 p.m. Please make a note of the date now. Our main attraction will be ‘Peter and the Wolf’ by Prokofiev- a story narrated by a professional actor with musical illustrations provided by the Orchestra. We hope that this will be appeal especially to young people. After a short interval, the rest of the programme will include such favourites as the Overture to the Mikado and Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture. Brand new obstacle course and mud run for Suffolk families A brand new event is coming to Suffolk this June as the makers of the Whole Hog and Boss Hog launch the Piglet, Junior Hog. The Piglet, Junior Hog will be an entry-level version of the popular obstacle courses and mud runs that have been part of the Suffolk calendar for over 10 years. It will be aimed at those who want to take part with their children or just those who would like to run a shorter route, and benefit East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). Sponsored by Taylor Wimpey, the event will take place on Sunday, 9 June on the lands of Wantisden Hall near Woodbridge, with two courses for runners. One will be over two kilometres and feature at least 10 obstacles. Children aged eight to 11 can take part, provided each is accompanied by a participating adult. The other will be over four kilometres and feature at least 20 obstacles. It will be open to anyone aged 12 and over. Louisa Smart, EACH Suffolk Community Fundraiser, said: “Having been a charity partner of the Whole Hog for the last two years, we’re delighted the organisers’ support is going a step further this year. “Families who come along to this are guaranteed of a muddy, fun-filled day out, with obstacles such as cargo nets, tunnels, rivers and monkey bars likely to feature.” Runners will set off in waves at 9.30am, 10am, 10.30am, 11am and 11.30am. Tickets range in price from £12.50 to £17.50. Everyone will receive a medal at the end. There will be food and refreshments available. At this time of year we see young people who are revising and cramming in order to pass those all important school or university exams. We see teenagers and children with 'tension' type problems across their shoulder girdle, upper back and necks. Some of our patients may come in with headaches and migraines, which have often been exacerbated by sitting studying for long periods of time at a computer, or worse, slumped on their beds with a lap top on their knees. Carrying school bags of heavy books can result in low back and shoulder problems, and added to the levels of general anxiety, students often find themselves distressed and uncomfortable at the very time they need to be functioning well. All this, in conjunction with growth spurts and hormones. It's a lot for any young person to have to to deal with. At Hadleigh Osteopaths we are happy to treat students of all ages. We are aware that teenagers are not often forthcoming when they are not feeling on top form, and they often find it difficult to explain that they are a bit 'up tight', both emotionally and physically. Gentle osteopathic treatment can often help to relieve some of the mechanical stresses and strains associated with long hours of study, and we are also able to offer advice about the best ways to position computers and laptops to reduce postural strain. We are registered with the General Osteopathic Council, and use gentle structural techniques. A GP referral is not necessary, although some insurance companies might require one. World Book Day - The whole school enjoyed a week of activities surrounding World Book Day; each year group chose a book to focus on and read the story throughout the week. Pupils were inspired by their books and produced wonderful written, maths and W creative work relating to them. Year Three read George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl and spent time measuring and mixing potions. Year One focused on Jim and the Beanstalk by Raymond Briggs, in this story the beanstalk grows again but this time in the garden of a boy called Jim. He is as inquisitive as Jack and soon scrambles up the beanstalk but finds a sad and lonely giant, who he helps. Pupils read the giant's thank you letter to Jim and improved it when they wrote their own. (This giant has terrible handwriting!). Year Six began their unit on Shakespeare with Romeo and Juliet, this continued into Shakespeare week, from the 18th March. During this week all pupils in our school experienced one of Shakespeare's plays and took part in drama and related activities. Children were given the opportunity to share books with another year group on WBD afternoon, an experience enjoyed by all and one we hope to repeat again soon. This year the traditional 'dress up as a book character' was replaced with 'dress a potato as a book character'. We were over whelmed by our pupil's response. The hall was full of imaginative, creative characters, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, several hungry caterpillars and many super heroes including, of course, Supertato. Staff were given the very difficult job of choosing a winner from each class, it was so difficult that nearly every class chose two winners! Elmer's Big Parade - St Elizabeth Hospice Fundraising - Our young Elmer sculpture, which we have named, Eternal Sunflower, has had a brightly coloured base coat and the decorated hands, words and sunflowers designed and made by staff and pupils have been added. After a varnish, Eternal Sunflower will be returned to St Elizabeth Hospice and join the other young Elmers before attending the Suffolk Show and then becoming part of the Elmer's Big Parade trail around Ipswich. The work and support of the hospice has affected many in our school and we are proud to be raising money for them. Our recent cake sale was a huge success; the sale of cakes, biscuits, sweet treats and knitted elephants raised over £480! Thank you to everyone who baked and donated, especially our wonderful kitchen staff who produced a 100 elephant shaped biscuits for us to sell. Music - On Monday March 4th, our choir of 90 children from Years 4 to 6 went to Snape Maltings to perform in the ‘Celebration of Schools’ Music,’ 2019. The children worked really hard preparing for the event and it was a fantastic opportunity for all involved. The day itself consisted of a technical rehearsal on stage and a group finale session, followed by the evening concert. The choir sang Scarborough Fair with Canticle, Orford Lighthouse and were given the honour of performing the world premiere of Paul Sartin’s new arrangement of Pleasant and Delightful. They were challenging songs and we are very proud of all the children! Sport - We recently took part in the Hadleigh Schools Swimming Gala at Hadleigh Leisure Centre. A total of eight schools entered the competition; Hadleigh, Elmsett, Bildeston, St. Mary's, Whatfield, Hintlesham, Kersey and Stoke ByNayland. Each school competed in backstroke, freestyle, breaststroke and relay races and throughout the whole afternoon, the atmosphere that all the children created inside the Leisure Centre was electric. As a result of our team swimming brilliantly, we won the whole competition. We now await County Finals in the summer. Well done Year 5 & 6! Our Year 5 girls team took part in the Under 11's Girls Futsal County Finals at Inspire Suffolk. Six schools participated in the event and we were put into Group B, meaning we played matches against Old Hemstead and Glemsford. The girls played brilliantly during those two matches, drawing 0-0 and winning 4-0. We finished top of our group which took us through to the final where we met Read Oaks. After a thrilling match, Read Oaks just came out on top 4-3 winners. This meant Hadleigh finished runners-up in the County. A fantastic achievement by the whole team! Well done girls!

Hello dear friends, have you eaten too much chocolate over Easter? I find this very curious in my human helpers. However, the diligent Tuesday crew did a great fund raiser for us: an Easter Egg raffle. The whopping great chocolate egg, donated by Linden Lady Chocolates, was won by Scot Davy. Hope you enjoyed every bite of it Scot! Babs and I have had a quiet three weeks’ break, listening to our live herd being groomed and exercised by the helpers who keep the centre going during the school holidays, not to mention the maintenance team that works at keeping the grass mown and the buildings in good repair. We hear them chatting to each other whilst they have a coffee break outside our door. Since they are all volunteers, not everyone can be there every week: they are always hoping to expand the pool of people who see to the maintenance of the Centre. Our chaps who come to mow the grass, do repairs and keep the place looking good are a very special bunch of volunteers, not usually connected with horses at all. So I should love to greet any person out there who could lend a hand on the land. I’m a really handsome, unusual and interesting horse to meet, not in the same league as a live pony of course but a real feat of computer science and engineering. Talking of volunteers, it’s the turn of three of them to add to my list of 30 good reasons for coming here: 4) Elspeth: the lovely atmosphere and friendliness up here. 5) Jan who is one of our Coaches: the determination the riders show to achieve the best they can, which brings out their glorious smiles, and makes Shelley a happy place for all. 6) Cherry: being part of a really good team. And Jan’s cake! Our volunteers have been receiving training as part of the on going search for excellence here, my photo shows two of the groups watching Lyn demonstrate correct handling of the ponies to encourage their good behaviour and a forward movement. You won’t catch me needing to be led correctly, my buttons let me change pace quickly and willingly to give my riders the best physiotherapy I can. The month of May means The Hadleigh Show cometh! May in South Suffolk brings much to look forward to. Near the top of the list must surely be the Hadleigh Show. Last year this most wonderful of events, enjoyed by so many of my constituents, happened to coincide with the Royal Wedding. I must admit, following the UK’s decision to leave the EU, I doubt many of us expected this year’s Hadleigh Show to kick off a week potentially culminating in elections to the European Parliament. Of course, holding European elections is a legal ‘default’ given – at the time of writing – the UK’s delayed departure from the EU. It may be that by the time you read this we in Parliament will have found a form of Brexit to agree a majority for, thus ensuring we would not be required to participate in the MEP elections. For this is really the key to our present difficulties: a failure to agree the best way to implement the referendum result of 2016. As your Member of Parliament, I very much regret that we ever ended up in such a mess, and I hold my hands up that we – your elected Government and Parliament as one body politic – have failed you, since the core promise of both main parties at the last general election to deliver Brexit was not delivered in a timely manner. Of course, hindsight is a powerful tool in these situations, but it solves nothing to speculate on what we might have done differently. The fact is when I was first elected in 2015 it was on the basis that we as a country finally had to make our mind up, for better or worse, whether we wanted to stay in the EU or leave. After years and years of debilitating disagreement over the European issue, particularly in my party but also across our nation, it was decision time: and we chose to leave. I have done my best to implement that instruction in a way that balances economic strength against the restoration of sovereignty. I will continue to do so - whilst looking forward to another fantastic show season!
Hadleigh On Show - Community Event to show The Best of Hadleigh 5th October 2019 Most of us who live in Hadleigh consider that we live in one of the best places, so let’s celebrate our town and its people with a special event! On Saturday, 5th October we hope to fill the whole of the Town Hall with representatives from all our community, voluntary, sports and social groups. Music Lessons from Award-winning Composer and Musician Jason Frederick Hadleigh based composer Jason Frederick will be performing music by one of his influences, multiple Oscar-winner John Barry. One of cinema’s most prolific and popular film composers, Barry composed many legendary scores including many James Bond films such as Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever. He won an Oscar in 1985 for Out Of Africa and again in 1990 for Dances with Wolves. This performance takes place on Sunday the 12th of May at St Mary’s Church in Hadleigh, at 3pm. Tickets are £6.00 and available at the door. Jason Frederick is a Canadian multi-instrumentalist and composer for film and television, and is now offering tuition in Hadleigh. After studying with some of most significant film composers of the 20th Century at The University of Southern California and composing for film, tv, adverts and the stage, he relocated to the UK from Los Angeles in 2010. His music can be heard in projects ranging from Disney’s 101 Dalmatians 2 to How Clean Is Your House and Top Gear. Stoke-by-Nayland WEA presents its Annual Day School At Stoke-by-Nayland Village Hall on Saturday, 6th July 2019 at 10 am Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich
Talk and guided tour by Erica Burrows Friends of the Ipswich Museums The main body of the talk will be about Christchurch Mansion and of the three families who lived in it from 1549 until it became a museum in 1894. We shall be shown a number of portraits and hear some fascinating stories. There will be brief accounts of the Priory that preceded Christchurch Mansion on this site and of the early origins of the Ipswich Museum and Ipswich Art School. Erica will end by showing us important items in the collections, many of which have been funded by the Friends, and picking out her favourites. Join us for what should be a fascinating day. Suffolk Bereavement Support Exploring Feelings Associated with Loss Fundamental to the support offered by Suffolk Bereavement Support is the exploration of emotions associated with loss. Feelings are obviously an important part of us, although not the whole of us, but during times of loss it can sometimes seem that way. Often it can seem as if our feelings are running out of control, and constantly demanding our attention to the exclusion of all else. Sometimes we can block such feelings but often we cannot. Our starting point is that all of these often-confusing emotions are saying something important and the more we understand and express them the greater our wisdom will be about what is going on for us the knock-on effect. Similarly, the more we express our feelings the greater the release will be of the painful energy associated with the emotional turmoil of loss. If this blog is meaningful for you in connection with a bereavement, be it recent or further back in time then why not come and join a Suffolk Bereavement Support group? We are here to help! Hadleigh Parkside Pre-School This term we have welcomed many new children into the setting, it has been great to see them all settle in so well. We have been doing lots of mindfulness with the children through yoga and story massage. After Easter we will be continuing our extra curriculum activates including some new fun things in our music lessons. We will continue to practice our French; the children have found it great practicing some songs in French and how to introduce themselves to others. We are adding in Market trips to our extra curriculum. We will be supporting the local market, visiting there to buy some lovely fruit with the children. We will continue to visit Magdalen Care Home with the children every two weeks. The children and residents both love these visits. Our waiting list for September is currently filling up so please get in contact if you would like to arrange a visit. If you have a child between the ages of 18 months and 4 years feel free to pop in and have a look around our setting. We will be holding our holiday club again in the May half term and for the first 4 weeks of the summer holidays. This Easter club our we have visited lots of different places, including; the farm to hold some baby lambs, the soft play center, taking the children to a splash pool and done some lovely Easter crafts. When people hear the word ‘dementia’ the chances are that they are aware of the widespread prevalence of the condition and the challenges families face once a diagnosis has been made. There is much general advice available, largely around doing one’s best to keep normal life going until this is no longer possible, on the basis that there appears to be no known way of warding off the gradual erosion of personality and quality of life for the person with dementia. And yet it doesn’t have to be like this. The Contented Dementia Trust, which incorporates the SPECAL method, has a very different take on dementia. Even the name of this small but increasingly influential charity beams out a positive message, and its work offers an entirely new way of approaching everything to do with the subject of dementia. The Contented Dementia Trust takes as its starting point that once dementia has been diagnosed, the condition is best understood as a disability, not a terminal disease. A disability which is characterised by the random, intermittent and increasingly frequent failure to store new facts, whilst continuing to store feelings in the normal way. This is just a single change in the normal memory system, a lost limb, as it were, but it has the potential to change almost everything else unless those of us without dementia learn to adapt our own actions and reactions to take account of that change in the other person. Once dementia is understood in this way, it becomes a condition that can be remarkably successfully managed on a lifelong basis. The key to success lies in a simple yet far-reaching way of understanding how our normal memory works, what happens to all of us as we age, and the single dramatic change which occurs with the onset of dementia. Once we have really grasped the experience of the person with dementia, it becomes obvious that common sense is not useful. Something else is needed – SPECAL sense. This presentation provides a fascinating overview of the SPECAL method and a powerful insight into the remarkable difference that SPECAL sense can make in highly practical ways, transforming the dementia journey for everyone involved. The method works with the disability of dementia, rather than ignoring or fighting it and opens the door to sustainable well-being, 24 hours a day, every day for life. In a word, SPECAL works! Penny Garner, the founder and clinical director of the Contented Dementia Trust, was first introduced to dementia by her mother, who developed Alzheimer’s in her sixties and died at the age of 74. For almost thirty years Penny and her small team have been working at Burford, first with the NHS and now as an independent charity, and have refined what is now a fully integrated, practical and cost effective management method. The SPECAL method was initially developed entirely out of practice, with the theoretical underpinning following at a later date. In 2007 Penny collaborated with the best selling author and clinical psychologist Dr. Oliver James in the publication of a book, ‘Contented Dementia’ (Copies of the book are available from Amazon or direct from the Trust), about the SPECAL method, and a scientific evaluation is now being carried out by King’ s College London. It is an opportunity for you to share your views and concerns with other members of the community. The meetings are attended by members of the Town Council, local groups and organisations and a representative from Babergh & Mid Suffolk council. A summary report of the meeting held on 1 April 2019, chaired by Anita Young:The report of the meeting in March was approved. Guest Speaker 1 - Hazel Bradshaw - “Art & Creativity in Hadleigh”: Hazel gave an interesting presentation about her life’s journey, resulting in how she came to be an artist in Hadleigh. She has a diversity of artistic talents and, becoming aware that art and crafts benefit many people for many reasons, she has worked extensively where there is a social need, often one to one sessions, particularly for those living with mental health issues. Hazel moved from Bildeston to Hadleigh in 2018 and has secured a studio in Church Walk. She currently runs affordable workshops and weekly classes covering painting, creative craftwork, including embroidery, pottery and drawing classes on some Saturdays. The studio will participate in the Hadleigh Hidden Gardens event, aligning with the ‘Suffolk Open Studios’ on 8 June. Hazel will be exhibiting some of her work at the ‘Art of the Needle’ exhibition at St Mary’s, which runs from 27 April to 4 May and at The Hadleigh May Show. She also hopes to become involved in the Benton End Trust project. Guest Speaker 2 – Lola Hinton – “Plastics”: Lola, from Hadleigh High School, quickly proved herself to be a passionate, knowledgeable and confident speaker. On the day of her presentation it was World Earth Day and Lola covered many aspects of environmental pollution. Lola aspires to become a marine biologist as pollution of our oceans and rivers is of particular concern to her. She explained how we can all help, in even the smallest of ways, to make our world cleaner, safer and healthier for all species. Lola has delivered her talk to many groups, including Hadleigh Scouts and Cubs and introduced the Ecobrick to us all. This is a plastic bottle stuffed completely full of unrecyclable plastic and then used in creative ways, literally as a brick, with which houses are being built in parts of the world. They are becoming well known on social media. Her whole family is passionate about recycling and stopping the use of plastics wherever possible. Lola is keen to get across the message to “Reuse, Reduce & Recycle” and for us all to speak out whenever and wherever we can. www.kidsagainstplastic.co.uk is a website which aims to raise awareness and understanding of the problems caused by plastic misuse and to encourage and support others to become “Plastic Clever” and to reduce single use plastics. Its aim is to empower children and young people to believe they can make a difference. Hadleigh Steering Group was hugely impressed with her presentation. Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group: There were a reported 171 missed appointments, equating to 39 doctors’ mornings and costing c. £17.5k! Babergh & Mid Suffolk District Council: pending elections there is no update Hadleigh Town Council: pending elections there was no update. There is a Father’s Day event on 16 June at the Guildhall from 2:00pm5:00pm with High Tea provided by Angel Delights, including a glass of Prossecco. Tickets are £15 per person from the Town Hall office. It was mentioned that there is a “Good Gym” service which offers one free gym session and then, with a partner, offering to undertake small jobs in the community. This could align with the Good Neighbourhood Scheme. Tidy Town: Nine picks are scheduled over the coming three weeks leading up to Easter, the period of the Great British Spring Clean. Morrisons are kindly hosting an après pick for the volunteers on 10 April. Picnic tables and benches will all be washed before Easter. There continues to be an average of eight volunteers per session, twice a week. Visit Hadleigh: The website needs updating and this cost will cost approximately £2.5k. Hanging baskets are planned to be up before The May Show and there will be more of them this year. Stuart Service will be on BBC Radio Suffolk – the James Hazell show every morning this week showcasing Hadleigh, the website and the Hadleigh Steering Group. Stuart gave out the new visitor maps of Hadleigh which look wonderful and were very well received. Jane showed the map holders that will be available.

Some funds raised specifically for visitor information have been used for an A board for the Magdalen Road bus station pop up visitor information centre, which will be open for Hadleigh Hidden Gardens and there will be an information Board at the bus station. The Town Guides are grateful to Hadleigh Town Council for sponsoring their insurance costs again in 2019. Hadleigh Legacy Group / Community Garden: The garden in Magdalen Road is sporting late narcissi and the wildflower area has been re-seeded. Hadleigh Town Council is providing plants for the Market Place by the new community bench. Hadleigh On Show: The Town Hall/Guildhall Complex has been booked for Saturday, 5 October 2019. It will be open to the public from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Free entry. This is an information based community event, not a fund raiser. All community groups, services and charities are being encouraged to take a table (for a modest donation of £5) and be available to showcase what they can offer to residents of Hadleigh and those living nearby. Alongside these, there will be refreshments in the Dining Room by Angel Delights and a cash bar in the Grand Hall, run by the Queens Head, Layham. There will also be a raffle and a variety of timed entertainments throughout the day. Printed programmes will be available in due course. Hadleigh Annual Town Meeting will be held in the Dining Room at 7.30 on Tues 28 May. Jane Snowdon will prepare a report from the Hadleigh Steering Group. Hadleigh Community Choir has its summer concert at the United Reformed Church on Saturday, 13 July at 7.30pm. Entry by ticket. It was mentioned that McCarthy & Stone has been poor at communicating road disruptions due to large deliveries and has not been considerate in maintaining cleanliness of the High Street properties and roadways. News from St Mary’s School
Since the half term break, we have enjoyed lots of whole school activities. World Book Day was a great success, with the children (and most of the staff!) dressed up as their favourite book character. We had a very colourful celebration assembly as the children showed off their costumes, catwalk-style, then split up into mixed age groups across the school to share books and stories. After lunch, parents and friends were invited to come in for tea and biscuits and to admire the children’s work. Red Nose Day gave the children another reason not to wear school uniform – who knew there could be so many shades of red! And then there was World Maths Day, during which each class took part in an Active Maths session. The children had lots of fun and showed their sense of community and responsibility on our school spring cleaning day when the children put into practice some of the ideas they have talked about as they learn to care about their environment. On 29th March, the children joined all the other Hadleigh schools in ‘Wearing Red for Roo’ to raise money to support a local girl who is unwell. Visits: the children in year 2 had a splendid trip to Baylham Farm, getting close to lots of different animals and learning about their habitats, in a link with their science topic this term. Groups of Year 2 and Year 3 children took part in two multiskills sports festivals at Hadleigh High School in which they were split up into teams with children from other local primary schools. They demonstrated great resilience and co-operation, and had tremendous fun! Another group of children, this time from years 5 and 6, took part in cross-country races at the Royal Hospital School; once again they represented the school with pride. The sloping school field provided a useful training course! We were delighted to take six enthusiastic Year 6 pupils to the science fair at BT Adastral Park to celebrate British Science Week. They had a wonderful time listening to talks and engaging with fun, hands-on experiences about future technology. They particularly enjoyed learning about virtual reality, security, robots, using technology to help a patient and activities to encourage logical thinking. As always, the children behaved superbly and were excellent representatives of St Mary’s School. We are very grateful to all the engineers and volunteers at BT, who organised an incredible event! Year 5 and 6 visited St Mary’s Church to find out about the Eucharist and the children from Year also visited the church for an Easter workshop. All the children really enjoyed exploring the church and supporting their RE lessons by investigating Christians’ beliefs. Thank you to all the adults from the church community who organised the activities and supported the children. The children from Year 6 enjoyed another super visit to ‘Crucial Crew’ where they learned all about keeping safe in a variety of situations. They were really thoughtful and sensible in their approach to the scenarios they faced.

Many thanks to the Friends of St Mary’s for organising Film Night and Disco this term. These are important social events for the school community. The children behaved brilliantly and had lots of fun; we are grateful for the funds raised for the school. Several visitors have helped us by leading Collective Worship this term, including Father Jo, Reverend Bryn, Trish Pitt and Brian Hempstead. We are grateful for their help in thinking about the value of ‘forgiveness’, which has been our focus this half term. We were also delighted to welcome back our friends from the Christian Youth Ministry, who came in to help the children learn the Easter story. As always, their performance was an entertaining, fun way to share the message with the children. Visitors: the children have benefited from meeting some excellent visitors this term, including a police officer who met the children from the Early Years. He told them all about his car and uniform and helped them to think about keeping safe. A visitor from the NSPCC led and assembly for the whole school and workshops for the older children. Once again, there was strong message about personal safety and lots of information for the children to reflect on. Once again, we have been pleased to take part in a creative arts project with Dance East. This year’s project, ‘Hullaballoo’, involved two months of dance sessions with Dance East, culminating in a performance at St Mary’s Church. Our friends from Dance East were so helpful and the children were wonderfully creative. Their final performance made us all feel very proud: their effort was tremendous and they represented the school beautifully. The Year 3 and Year 4 production of ‘Pirates of the Curry Bean’ was hugely entertaining with lots of funny moments and lovely singing. The children did a marvellous job learning their lines as it was a long show with lots of speech. The costumes and props were fantastic – many thanks to everyone involved in organising the production. We all enjoyed sailing to the island of ‘Lumbago’ to hunt for treasure with the children! The Year 5 children are all learning to play the recorder this year. They treated the whole school and parents to a recorder performance at the end of term, showcasing the tunes they have learned to play and singing some songs too. We were all really impressed by how well they played in time together! As always, the spring term has ended with a special Easter service at St Mary’s Church. Well done to all the children who contributed to the service with clear readings, thoughtful prayers and beautiful singing. Father Jo’s story really engaged the children and helped the children to understand the importance of this special time of year. After the service, we returned to school to have an Easter party in the hall with lots of craft activities for the children to enjoy with their parents and grandparents. It was lovely to see so many children having fun and being creative! Many thanks to the staff from the after-school club for organising the event. We hope everyone has a lovely Easter break and look forward to seeing the children in the summer term for more fun experiences and exciting learning!

My wife and I moved to Hadleigh from Ipswich just over two years ago and since then we have noticed just how friendly the people of the town are. From buying building materials to having a haircut, everyone seems to genuinely enjoy helping and serving you. We have joined several societies, including the Jazz club, Gardening club, the History Society and helped the Litter pickers where we have been warmly welcomed. I would like to take this public opportunity to thank those members of the public that voted and supported for me in the Town Council elections in 2015 and beyond. It was a huge honour to serve the Town where I have lived for over 30 years and is now very much “home”. I have decided not to stand again nor to continue with my membership of the Labour Party (this was announced at the last Town Council Meeting). The continuous bad feeling and undermining of the good work of the Council has been very destructive. In spite of this the current Council have achieved a great many things and I am very proud to have been part of them. We have held Tea and Talks and raised money for the Guildhall Complex, we have re-tendered and awarded a contract for the cemetery extension so that people who live in our wonderful town can be assured they will be ale to “rest” here when the time comes. We have collected food for the Ipswich food banks which serves Ipswich and surrounding town and villages, We have put in planning for the Layham Road and know that the young of tomorrow will be able to enjoy the new upgraded facilities as they deserve. We have attended planning meetings to hold to account developers using knowledge of the processes gained over many years and also utilising the great wealth of history of some of the seasoned councillors. Money has been incredibly well managed with no increase in the precept (the money the Town Council take from our Council Tax) over the last three years. The bank accounts are healthy which makes a good feeling to know we are handing on a job well done. It will be up to the new Council now to take these initiatives forward and to ensure that Hadleigh continues to thrive and raise money and awareness where needed. Dear Sir, I would like to respond to comments made in Roger Young's letter in last months Community News, where he indicated the Town Council was 'crazy' in giving away 25 years income valued at over '£200,000', in respect of the recently installed Telecom Tower at the Hadleigh United Football Club (HUFC) Ground. He also suggests the HUFC Car Park is owned by the Town Council and should be sign posted and, I assume he means, used by the public. I would like to point out that the Car Park at the Millfield is a private Car Park operated by HUFC and included within a 25 year lease for the Millfield Grounds. This Car Park was built by HUFC following grant support from the Football Foundation plus income from a fund raising scheme which included 30 supporters 'chipping in' to raise the finance to have this Car Park built. HUFC has a Monthly Prize Draw scheme whereby Hadleigh residents can use their Car Park, we also have an arrangement with the Hadleigh Health Centre who have some allocated spaces for their staff and the Rugby Club uses HUFC's Car Park to support their big events at the Layham Road Sports Ground. Regarding Mr Young's comments on the Telecom Tower, I wish to point out the Town Council were very helpful to HUFC, in particular former councillor Rickaby Shearly-Sanders, who investigated with us and helped negotiate new leases for the Football Club and sub leases with Shared Access who provide and install Telecoms Towers. Shared Access working in Partnership with the Football Association were encouraged to look for desirable sites at football grounds where floodlight towers needed replacing and at the same time would provide a platform for a Mobile Telecoms tower. The business model that Shared Access operate is a Capital Investment model with their returns coming from the Mobile Operators. In our case the Town Council and HUFC took up the opportunity to have a set of new Floodlights installed once the Millfield Site had been identified as desirable. A set of new Floodlights would also resolve a long standing problem of light pollution, and increased maintenance costs associated with our ageing 4 Tower floodlight system. Today HUFC has a brand new set of 6 Floodlight towers including 25 years free maintenance, as was announced at the time in the Hadleigh Community News. I trust the residents of Benton Street are pleased they no longer have any light spillage into their back gardens and the Mobile Phone signals have improved. This project cost neither the Town Council or HUFC a single penny. The commercial value of the deal with Shared Access including Legal Fees was around £60,000. I fully agree with Mr Young's last comments, 'Hadleigh needs bright, young, professional councillors to stand and be counted'. Dear Sir, Roger Young’s assertion (letters, HCN April 2019) that the Town Council gifted £200k from the Millfield Floodlights is misleading. To realize this income figure, two 4G telecoms companies needing this facility would have to be sourced to lease a floodlight tower immediately on completion of the installation. However, he hasn’t accounted for the initial capital outlay for the system and the included 25-year maintenance package costs. These together could total over £65k, thus making the income stream far less certain than suggested. Hadleigh United FC approached the Town Council early in 2016 requesting that they be allowed to pursue a scheme where a company, Shared Access (SA), install new floodlighting towers at no cost to either them or the Council. This is a Government approved and FA sponsored scheme that has been adopted by over 800 clubs and councils nationwide. SA had the engineering experience, resources and connections necessary to complete these works, whilst taking on the risk of not finding telecoms companies wishing to lease a tower. The new floodlights are more energy efficient and project a more directed light beam, resulting in vastly reduced light pollution. Therefore, the club has 30

Dear Sir, As some of you who have travelled on the A1071 to or from Ipswich recently will have noticed, Taylor Wimpey have begun work on their Wolsey Grange development. As part of the conditions leading to the grant of planning permission, a series of works and alterations will be carried out on the A1071 between Hadleigh Road and the London Road. These works are scheduled in three phases and will commence in May with initially, work to be carried out on Poplar Lane and lasting until August, work being carried out seven days a week from 07:00 to 19:00 to minimise the length of the works. More importantly from the end of August for a period of up to 14 weeks the A1071 will be closed from Poplar Lane to the London Road requiring a diversion via Hadleigh Rd and London Rd to navigate around the road closure. During this period the road will be widened with an extra lane leading up to the London Road and a dedicated cycle lane will also be provided. In addition additional traffic lights will be installed at the junction of Poplar lane and the A1071. The final phase will be the re-alignment of the traffic islands and the junction of the A1071 and London Road / Scrivener Drive and include the provision of upgraded traffic lights. This will require the traffic to be reduced to single lane working. This will last for a period of 4 weeks, during this time traffic from Scrivener Drive will only be permitted to left turn in and left turn out of Scrivener Drive. As can be seen from the scope of the works there is liable to be possibly severe congestion at peak times, particularly during the closure period so please be aware of this when planning any visits to Ipswich from May until the works are completed. Dear Sir, The residents of Hadleigh had several concerns regarding the planning application to build 57 homes on the site of the old council offices (not least that Hadleigh Cricket Club were not happy with the arrangements between themselves and the applicant to mitigate against ball strikes) and Hadleigh Town Council also voted to recommend refusal. As readers will know, this did not stop Babergh (effectively) granting itself planning permission to go ahead. There are now several developments on the go, or ready to go, in our small town. I would urge people to keep up to date with consultations and planning applications for building developments in and around Hadleigh. Once it’s gone, it’s gone...valuable green spaces, habitats for birds, animals and plants, places to walk, cycle, exercise, play, do sport; beautiful views; beautiful buildings; fresh air - the kind of stuff which helped Babergh achieve second position in a recent poll of ‘The Happiest Places to Live in the UK’ published in the Independent newspaper.’ Angela Wiltshire
New groups in Hadleigh to Support Carers, Cared for and especially those living with Dementia Jill Mason was appointed by HDAA (The Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance) in 2017 to develop activities and support people living with dementia and their Carers. Jill is already known for running Together Tuesday at Hadleigh Pool & Leisure on Tuesday afternoons 2pm – 4pm. Jill has also been working with Hadleigh Bowling Club and has also formed a new group on Wednesdays. The group at the Bowling Club meets on a Friday afternoon commencing May 3rd between 2.30 and 4pm, the group is open to Carers and Cared for. In the summer Petangue is played and in the Winter Indoor Bowls all with of course a cup of tea. If you would like to come and watch the bowls rather than play then that is fine too, a warm welcome awaits you at the club. Wellbeing Wednesdays is a new initiative, this group has been formed in response to an identified need for Carers to have respite from the task of caring. To allow the Carer to be able to take part in exercise classes, swimming, table tennis or going to the gym whilst the person they care for is supported by Jill, staff and dedicated Volunteers for up to 2 hours. This group runs from 10.30 to 12.30 on a Wednesday morning commencing 1st May at Hadleigh Pool & Leisure. Jill invites you to come along and meet her and the volunteers, the group is relaxed and the welcome friendly. The volunteers are a huge part of the groups that Jill facilitates, there are many volunteer opportunities available. Dementia Friendly Hadleigh We all know somebody whose life has been affected by dementia, whether and older relative or friend living through it or someone who is caring for a parent or spouse. As we live longer, dementia is becoming more common and it is more and more important to ensure people can continue to live connected lives, not cut off from the community. The Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance is working with the community to make sure we understand dementia, know how we can help and include people affected by dementia in community life. Our walk on Saturday 11th May will start and finish in Bentley and is again a pleasant woodland 6.5 miles. We will meet at 0930 at the Bentley village hall car park. Refreshments can be obtained at the community owned The Case is Altered pub at the end. Our route will take us through Dodnash Wood, East End, Warrens Wood, Meadow Cottages, Great Martin’s Hill Wood, Holly Wood, Windy Farm and back into Bentley. At this time of the year we are hoping to be overwhelmed with bluebells. To get to the start, take the Capel St Mary to Bentley road from the A12, proceed into Bentley passing the Case is Altered pub on the LHS. The village hall car park is on the RHS about 200 yards further on. If anyone is in need of transport please let us know and we will see if there is any opportunity for car sharing. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy or rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. Looking further out to June, our proposed walk will hopefully be the Dragon Walk from Bures followed by a walk around Polstead in July. The DIY Deli Sauerkraut Sauerkraut is widely hailed as a probiotic superfood; that is to say it has beneficial effects on the digestive system because of the gut-friendly anaerobic bacteria it introduces; such microbes are often taken in yogurtbased dietary substitutes. Contrary to popular belief it is not produced by adding vinegar to cabbage; the sour taste is derived from acids (principally lactic acid) produced by the process of fermentation of the sugars present in the cabbage, promoted by naturally occurring yeasts in the atmosphere; also produced are simple alcohols which combine with the lactic acid to form esters that promote the unique flavour of sauerkraut, and carbon dioxide, which accounts for the effervescence as it escapes into the atmosphere. This recipe is designed to dispel the myth that instigating the process of fermentation is as complex as the chemistry behind it. Essential equipment 1. A cylindrical container of ceramic, glass or food grade plastic, capable of holding 3 litres; alternatively, a straight-sided stainless steel or enamel saucepan that can be set aside for up to 3 weeks. It is crucial that there is no restricted neck. 2. A plate that is a good, but not tight, fit to the container. 3. A glass paperweight 4. Airtight jars – e.g. Kilner jars Ingredients White or red cabbage (not savoy type) Around 1 kg, Sea salt 60g, Water 1 litre. Chicken or vegetable stock 1 litre, 12 Whole cloves. Method 1. Bring the water to the boil and add all of the salt; you need this concentration to avoid the ingress of harmful bacteria; stir until all of it is dissolved; allow to cool, finishing in the fridge, to reach a temperature of 5℃. 2. Halve the cabbage; using a sharp knife, remove and discard the conical hard core in the centre. 3. Cut the cabbage into long thin slices, ideally 2-3mm wide. 4. Place the cabbage in the chosen container; push down tightly & add the cold brine 5. Introduce the plate, compress & place the paperweight on top; it is essential that all the cabbage is covered in the brine; if any small pieces creep past the gap between the edge of the plate and the container they will float to the top. Remove them with a teaspoon & discard; you don’t want contact between any of the cabbage and the air. 6. Cover the container – sufficient to keep the flies out but not airtight. 7. Place in a cool place, ideally 15-20℃; it must not exceed 22℃ at any time; this should be achievable in a North-facing room or garage. The fermentation process takes 2-4 weeks depending on temperature – longer in cool conditions. 8. Lift the lid and inspect on a daily basis, leaving the plate & paperweight in situ; carefully remove any bits that have floated to the top. 9. After two weeks, remove the paperweight & carefully remove the plate using a table knife between the edge and the rim. The cabbage should have a distinctive, surprisingly acidic, but pleasant, flavour. If this has not been achieved replace the plate & weight & leave for another week taking care to remove any bits floating above the water. 10. The sauerkraut can be eaten raw but braising it in stock will temper the acidity. 11. Drain the cabbage in a colander and transfer to a saucepan; add water, sufficient to cover by 12mm, 12 cloves, & the contents of 2 proprietary chicken stockpots (vegetable stockpots for a vegan version); heat to just below boiling; cover & simmer for 30 minutes. 12. Sterilise the jars & seals in a water bath (instructions on Kilner website) while the pan is cooling 13. Using a perforated spoon fill the jars with cabbage while still warm. 14. Top up the jars to the rim with stock & seal. Storage The product will keep in the fridge 3-4 weeks To serve Can be served cold or reheated.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Wednesday April 10th 2019: Last month saw several carloads of club members heading to West Stow near Bury St Edmunds. There we visited Fuller's Mill Garden, a beautiful area of woodland on the banks of the river Lark. The sun shone as we wandered through the manicured lawns and flowerbeds. The restful sound of running water made a peaceful setting with lilies and marginal plants to enjoy under the blossom trees. Tea and cake on the lawn was enjoyed before many of us purchased a variety of plants from the sales table..... the perfect end to a tranquil afternoon. The garden is cared for by 'Perennial', a UK charity dedicated to those who work in or are retired from horticulture. Open from April to September ... well worth a visit, a plantsman's paradise. Monday May 13th 2019: This month sees us return to Hadleigh Town Hall where our speaker, Martin Gibbison will be sharing with us his knowledge of climbers. The meeting begins at 7.30pm and entrance is £4 for visitors and £2 for members to include refreshments. There will be the usual raffle and plant sales table and the competition for May is ' three alliums in a vase'. Looking ahead one month to June the club will be involved with the 'Hadleigh Hidden Gardens' on Saturday June 8th and one of our members, Sue, will be opening her garden in Semer on Sunday June 23rd as part of the National Garden Scheme, more details next month. hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com
Bentwaters Cold War Museum The Bentwaters Cold War Museum has opened its doors for 2019 and is a popular attraction for visitors to the Suffolk coastal area and for those interested in aviation and military installations previously denied access to the public. The museum is based in the United States Air Force (USAF) hardened command post on the former Bentwaters airbase which closed after the withdrawal of the USAF in 1993 and is believed to be the only such building open to the public in the UK and Europe. Run by volunteers from the Bentwaters Aviation Society, the building is a large bunker made available to the public to view following 3 years of work to renovate and refurbish and opened in 2007. Further information on the society can be found at www.bentwaters-as.org.uk and for the museum at www.bcwm.org.uk The main “War Operations Room” and “Battle Cabin” have been restored to original condition including the original decontamination showers and airlocks allowing members of the public to see these once top secret, high security military installations in detail in an eerie atmosphere evoking the Cold War period. Other parts of the building have been turned into exhibition rooms, covering the history of RAF Bentwaters from W.W.II until the base closed in 1993. Included in this are histories of the units that operated from the airfield, particularly the 81st Fighter Wing. Also included is the other airfield which was part of the “twin base” complex - RAF Woodbridge, again covering the period from W.W.II until the present day. Of particular interest to families is a detailed timeline display of the Cold War which has proven of great help to those studying this period at school. Further exhibition rooms feature information on the “Special Operations/Rescue Squadrons” that were based at RAF Woodbridge, and also the “Aggressor” Squadron based at Bentwaters. Outside are the aircraft exhibits where the RAF Harrier and Hunter can be seen, and are joined by the USAF A-10 Warthog which was a familiar sight in the skies over Suffolk when this iconic type operated from Bentwaters and Woodbridge. There is plenty of car parking space and the museum is suitable for all ages and has the added benefit of being an all weather visitor attraction. Plans for 2019 will see airframes continue to undergo work to bring them up to museum standard and it is expected some will be completed by the end of the year. The café and shop continues to be a great success offering light refreshments and souvenirs and card payment facilities. Following on from the success of previous years, the open dates for 2019 have now been finalised and the museum will continue to open on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month and Bank Holiday Sundays & Mondays, from April until October. Down to Earth ...with Dave A recent article in the newspaper caught my attention, it was titled 'Is your compost heap killing you?' It seems that some scientists are concerned that a drug resistant super fungi may be growing in our compost heaps. The most dangerous one is aspergillus, this is a mould that flourishes on dead plant material and is apparently common in compost heaps. Anyone who has a lung complaint or a weakened immune system should avoid breathing in any dust from the compost, piles of garden rubbish or from bags of brought in compost. The best preventative measures seem to be to keep the compost moist and, something that I have always advocated, do not turn the heap. From my experience heaps are never allowed to dry out, nor are they turned. I for one have no intention of giving up my beloved composts, but I will be a bit more aware of the possible risks. On a more cheerful note the seed sowing and planting is well underway. The first two rows of potatoes are in and generously earthed up in case of a late frost, but as yet there are no signs of shoots. Seeds such as spinach, chard, parsnips and carrots have been sown directly on the allotment. The first pea plants grown in the greenhouse have been carefully hardened off and planted out, with luck they will survive a slight frost. The greenhouse is full of various little seedlings all at various stages of their growth. It is a constant job moving them from the heated trays to other spots where they will grow on before eventually being planted out. The hanging basket with the three tumbling toms planted in is hanging up in the greenhouse. Once all danger of frost is past they will be hung on the wall at the back of the house, this works very well and is just as attractive as a basket of flowers. On a recent visit to Perrywoods garden centre we bought three home grown tomato plants, these are first class plants, better than your average. At present they are growing on in the greenhouse but in a few weeks time they will be planted out into very large pots filled with multipurpose compost and stood outside against the side of the greenhouse. OBee (the Community Interest Company who run Orchard Barn near Battisford) have been awarded a Heritage Lottery grant of £9,900. This funding will enable us to provide new and existing volunteers with practical training in Medieval Style Timber Framing and Timber Frame Repairs. Our current project is both Living Archaeology and Re-enactment, and this funding will help with the reinstatement of a Tudor Timber Frame at Orchard Barn. FREE training is available soon. We are recruiting volunteers who would like to undertake the training and then practice their new (but very old) skills to further the project. Sadly, it suffered a fall from grace when it became susceptible to a strain of mildew. Now, with new breeding and genetics I am told by the breeders this problem has been overcome. Later in the season I will have a small amount of these plants to try. We will see if the promise live up to the hype! It is not until these new varieties are tried in ‘real gardens’ that we will find out. Hadleigh Town Council are pleased to announce that work on the cemetery extension will commence early April 2019 The Association of Burial Ground Managers recommend – “Where demand is forecast to use all available grave space within 10 years it is prudent for managers intending to extend the life of the burial ground to seek additional land for this purpose without delay. It would be prudent to allow as long a lead time as possible to ensure continuity of burial services.” The Local Government Act 1972 states “A burial authority may enclose, lay out and embellish a cemetery in such manner as they think fit” and “A burial authority may construct such roads to a cemetery as they think fit” The extension will need to settle for approximately 1 year after work has been carried out. The Council will then decide how they wish this area to be laid out with regard to the percentage of burial, cremation and green burial plots. Hadleigh Town Council would like to draw attention to the fact that it will not require subsidy from the Council Tax. Our General Funds are very healthy, largely due to the work put in by the Town Clerk in managing the budget which has meant that the precept has not increased for the last 3 years. Income from the current and the proposed new cemetery will pay towards the costs. The Council can also, if necessary, call on the Capital/General Fund which has been boosted by previous income from the cemetery over the years It has been said that cemeteries are often given scant attention by planners and other local officials, becoming a concern only when a crisis erupts. Yet cemeteries, like parks, schools, roads and housing are integral to the life of a community. Moreover cemeteries can serve as more than just the resting place of the dead, providing the living with areas for contemplation, solace and remembrance. It is fortunate therefore that there was foresight by Hadleigh Town Council to extend the cemetery thus ensuring the future of burials within the town for at least a further 40 years. A timeline of how this has been achieved is detailed below:• Being aware of the life expectancy of the current cemetery, Hadleigh Town Council began tentative enquiries in 2011 regarding the possibility of purchasing adjacent land for an extension • A planning application was submitted to Babergh in December 2013 and approval given 15 months later. This included plans for a green burial area. • Final purchase of the land (3.3 acres) was then completed middle of 2015 • Plans were available to view on Babergh’s website, at the Annual Town Meetings in2015, 2016 & 2017, at Living with Dying events in 2015 & 2016, the May Show and various Neighbourhood Plan pop-up events • The work was put out to tender and these were received in January 2017 • The lowest tender came in at £1,195,359.29 • As this was to a “gold” standard, changes to the specification were requested and new tenders came in at June 2017 with a much reduced budget price of £473,386.36 • The possibility of doing the work in stages was looked into in 2017 but would incur quite additional expense due to mobilisation costs • Babergh advised that a Section 73 (variation of condition) application would be required and approval for this was given in early January 2018 • Following this approval, an application was made to the Public Works Loan Board for £500,000 and this was approved in April 2018. Approval for applying for the loan having been given by full Council in August 2017 and March 2018. Council were in receipt of information advising of the repayment amounts and that a contingency of £600,000 should be considered which could be financed from the General Fund. This loan is a fixed rate loan, repayable 6 monthly, over 25 years, interest calculated at 2.790%, payments will decrease with time. • Due to the time lapse the preferred supplier provided an up-to-date price which was provided in May 2018 and had increased to £540,620.83. Due to the large increase this had to go back to full Council for approval • Sadly the preferred supplier went into receivership and although a different company offered to honour the tender this was not legally possible and therefore the project had to be retendered • New tenders were received in January 2019 and the recommended supplier was approved by full Council in February 2019 pending verification that the tender was robust • A very successful meeting was held and Hugh Pearl were offered the works. Their tender price for this was £472,597.96.

Rotary Review During a quiet period for the Club there was one speaker during the past month. John Robinson, former member and past president of the Club,entertained members with stories and photographs of his recent holiday in the far North East of Russia known as the Kamchatka Peninsula. This is a heavily forested,volcanic region containing 600 volcanoes of which 28 are currently active. The main city is Petropavlovsk where the temperature hardly goes above freezing at any time of the year. About 200,000 people live in the area with the city containing around 90% whilst there are no railways nor any roads to speak of. In the past it has served as a training ground for the Russian army although he found no signs of this now. The indigenous population when not in the city are mainly reindeer herders whilst the southern end of the Peninsula is a bear sanctuary. It also contains a large lake where 60% of the world stock of sockeye salmon go to spawn and this attracts the bears which are mainly brown and grizzly. John had many photographs of close encounters with the bears. Travel around the area was mainly by helicopter but certain journeys could only be completed by lorry and then foot. He visited hot springs and trekked to the foot of a volcano which erupted in 2012. This entailed carrying all his own camping equipment and sharing a tent! There was also a visit to the reindeer herders further north involving another trek but eventually reaching the one hotel in the area which provided much needed creature comforts but could only be reach by foot or helicopter. It was heated geothermically. The plan was to go back to the city by helicopter in good time to rest before flying home but weather closed in and helicopter was much delayed so that his party just made the airport in time to catch flights. John agreed that it was very hard work but with many rewards in exploring a region which is little known. Parish Council The main matters discussed in the meeting of 27 March 2019 were: • District Council report Councillor Ward confirmed that the redevelopment of the Corks Lane site would now go ahead, following approval of the planning application on 25 March; Babergh was working with Norse to develop both the Corks Lane and the Needham Market sites. The new Exacom database had been awarded the iESE Bronze Award in the Intelligent Council category. A serial fly tipper had been sentenced to 15 months imprisonment following a lengthy investigation by Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils. • County Council report The March Cabinet meeting had been brought forward to allow the County Council and Suffolk Coastal District Council to give a joint response on the Sizewell C and Scottish Power project. If this were to go ahead, 25%-30% of the country’s power supply would be generated from East Anglia, with the issue of pylons coming to the forefront again. Councillor Jones said he hoped the route would be along the seabed, to the Thames. • Water Lane Another vehicle turning into Water Lane from the Mill end had caused damage to a tree. The PC would continue to monitor the situation so that the new council could look at the need for a sign at the bottom of the lane as well as the top. • Finance The finance report was approved; it was noted that this included a payment to Playdale Playgrounds for new equipment on the playing field, which would be reimbursed by Babergh from Section 106 funds, once installed. The invoice for emptying litter and dog refuse bins was also noted; councillors felt parishioners should be reminded that the PC had to pay for emptying dog bins – so would dog owners please use them! • Planning – Layham Quarry, Rands Road Councillors discussed the application for the variation of conditions 3, 25 and 48 of permission B/01/00045 to provide additional time periods for the completion of extraction and restoration (the application was in respect of extraction and processing, not landfill). Councillors had some sympathy with responses already submitted by residents of Layham and would ask SCC to take these into consideration. Councillors had concerns about the possible risk of flooding as, when extraction was taking place in the past, it was noticeable that the level of the stream running through gardens in Lower Layham was higher, with some gardens being flooded. There was also some concern about the increased noise level in what was usually a quiet rural village. The Parish Council would be closely monitoring the situation. • Brett Green defibrillator It was agreed that the defibrillator, which was now almost ready to go ‘live’, should be publicised. A brief photoshoot would therefore take place at 11am on Thursday 18 April; Councillor Jones confirmed he would be able to attend. The Clerk would invite representatives from the various organisations who had made donations, ie our County Councillor through his Locality Fund; the Hadleigh Thrift Shop, Hadleigh Health Centre’s Charitable Trust, Brett Valley Lodge and the Queen’s Head, as well as James Cartlidge MP and those parishioners who had helped with the project. She would also ask an EADT photographer to attend and would contact Mark Murphy at Radio Suffolk. • Allotments Councillors approved amendments to the tenancy agreement; the Clerk would prepare the new agreements as soon as possible after 1 April. Layham Parish Council As has been previously reported, all members of our Parish Council were required to stand down this May – this happens every four years. Nominations are then invited for seven local people to carry on their work. The invitation for nominations that appeared in ‘Letter from Layham’ in March resulted in only five applications – thus Charlotte Britton, John Curran, David Pratt, Sheila Roberts and Michael Woods are elected unopposed. One of the first actions of the newly elected group will be to seek members of our community prepared to be co-opted to fill the two remaining vacancies. The outcome of this exercise will be reported in these pages in due course.

Layham Parish Plan Event Saturday 6 April and over 80 parishioners turned up to have a look at the findings of the questionnaire that was delivered to all homes. The findings, together with comments made on the day, are being collated and will be available to guide the thinking of the new Parish Council which meets for the first time in May. Layham Playgroup CIO The end of the spring term saw us celebrate with our friends from St Andrews church. The children made an Easter garden for the church and enjoyed finding the Easter eggs which were hidden in the church. We hope the church mouse enjoyed it’s egg the children left for it! During the Easter holidays we held our annual Easter Fun Morning. The weather was fine, and the families were able to look for clues down the lane and into the playing field. At the village hall crafts and refreshments were enjoyed by all. We are holding an Open Day on Monday 17th June 10 -12. It will be an opportunity for you to come and have a look at Layham Playgroup for yourself. The children will be able to join in the activities, whilst you will have the chance to meet our staff. Ladybird Toddler Group is part of Layham Playgroup and takes place every Wednesday morning during term time, 9.30 – 11.00 am, and is open to all children from birth – five years. Elmer Day at Hadleigh Library, Saturday 25th May, 2019 We humans are a funny old species. We have so much capacity for love, care and inventiveness but alongside these positive traits, we often create for ourselves circumstances which we find difficult and upsetting. Sometimes then, it may be beneficial for us to take inspiration from our animal friends. Elephants are a wonderful example and bring smiles to many people’s faces as they represent gentle strength, resourcefulness and mutual support; certainly these are values that we can’t do without in challenging times. On Saturday 25th May, Hadleigh Library will be celebrating Elmer Day and invite you to come along and join in. There will be story time and craft activities, suitable for 5-8 year olds from 10:30-11:30 as well as rag rug style Elmer making from 11:00 - 1pm (Suitable for those 8 years and over.) Earlier this year, Hadleigh’s Community Artist, Charmaine McKissock, won the prize for designing and painting a beautiful elephant statue, based on the popular children’s character, Elmer the patchwork elephant, and entitled, ‘Together We’re Stronger.’ Completed with a team of community helpers, the finished elephant will be shown in Ipswich and auctioned to raise money for St Elizabeth’s Hospice. As part of Elmer day, Charmaine will be at Hadleigh Library on the 25th, demonstrating the rag rug craft, creating a textile Elmer, with a chance for anyone to have a go at this fun activity. And let’s not forget (as an elephant indeed wouldn’t!) the Elmer (and other) story books we have at the library which are perfect for reading together. Let us do as the elephants do and show that together we can be supportive, strong and resourceful and what better place to find people to share these common traits with, than within your community – at your local library. Re-development of former Babergh District Council offices Hadleigh Cricket Club objects to the decision to grant planning permission to convert the former Babergh District Council offices in Corks Lane, Hadleigh into 57 new homes. The club has yet to reach an agreement with Babergh and its agents, the Lawson Planning Partnership, over a range of issues and at the planning committee meeting on March 25th Hadleigh Cricket Club spoke in objection to the plans. Despite months of negotiations, the plans presented by the Lawson Planning Partnership to mitigate the impact on the cricket club have been unsatisfactory. Sport England have also objected to the development and are fully supportive of the club’s position. The proposed mitigation solution does not reduce the risk of potential ball strikes to a level that the club would consider acceptable, and in fact shifts responsibility for maintenance of the mitigation solution from the developer to the cricket club, and puts a time limit on that management and maintenance plan. At a meeting in January it was made clear by the senior representative of Babergh that the club would be fully liable for any damage to property or persons. This meant that we had to request an improvement to the proposed mitigation measures in order to protect the club’s interests. As it stands the height of the permanent ball stop netting, at 4.3m, is just too low and exposes not only the club but the future residents of the development to far too much risk. The height of the demountable ball stop netting, while offering greater protection, still offers the risk of damage to property. We find it completely unacceptable that responsibility for maintenance of the netting will fall exclusively onto the cricket club, and that there will be a 15-year term of funding for such maintenance, rather than an indefinite period, as previously stated by the Lawson Planning Partnership. The positioning of the netting will mean the cricket club will lose part of its playing area. The precise location of the netting has yet to be confirmed, but whatever land is lost Sport England have made it clear that this would contravene exception E3 of its Playing Fields Policy. We have the full support of the statutory consultee Sport England and our governing body the ECB. We endorse Sport England’s request for a meeting between the cricket club, Babergh, their agents and representatives from Sport England and the ECB to resolve the outstanding issues and reach agreement on a mitigation scheme. We simply cannot understand how the application could be approved when there are so many unresolved issues with the organisation that it will affect most. We do not want to oppose the development. We do not want to see these buildings fall into disuse. All we want is to continue playing cricket as we have done on this ground for over 200 years, nothing more, nothing less. Above the Parapet County Council Report - Cllr Mick Fraser Hadleigh Traffic Management Working Group (HTMWG) On Tuesday 26th March, I chaired the inaugural meeting of the newly re-formed HTMWG. I was delighted by the response to my call for volunteers and by the attendance on the night, with thirteen residents and local councillors joining in. These attendees represented local groups including: The Hadleigh Society; U3A; Chamber of Commerce; and Steering Group. Cllr Dr Siân Dawson and Cllr Penny Cook represented the District and Town councils respectively. Using this range of interest and experience it is my belief that we will have a stronger voice when expressing our roads safety concerns, or ambitions to Suffolk County Council. Also, to decide what minor works we might do ourselves and where best to spend the Local Highways Budget. At the meeting our agenda points for discussion included: setting up an highways Self-Help Group; the A1071 by-pass junction with Aldham Mill Hill; pedestrian safety along Benton Street; and pavement safety for the disabled around the town. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who took part and for their valuable input to the discussions. I am very grateful to Jess Janus for her support by keeping the minutes of the meeting and for assisting me with all the administration required. The next meeting will be on 4th June, where I have invited Suffolk Highways officers and Cllr Mary Evans, the Cabinet member for Highways to attend and answer questions from the group. B1070 Benton Street Resurfacing At last Suffolk Highways teams have resurfaced Benton Street along the stretch between Station and Cranworth Roads. I have been pressing for these works to be done for the past 18months and I am pleased they have repaired a much longer stretch of road than had been anticipated. This effort was undertaken as part of SCC’s 4year roads resurfacing plan. I really hope that this new surface will be longlasting and immune to the prevalence of potholes which have blighted this main route over the past several winters. Climate Emergency Declaration There was an interesting motion put forward by the Green Party at the last full council meeting, 21st March, in that: “Suffolk County Council declare a climate emergency and, also aspire to make the county carbon neutral by 2030”. When the vote was taken, it was almost unanimous across the council chamber (1 against). You might ask what is the point of this motion and there was some scepticism to it? I stated that SCC should show leadership and be an example by installing and encouraging others to use renewable energy, recycle as much as possible and avoid waste wherever necessary. By doing nothing we won’t achieve anything! It ranges from early, fairly plain, weighty musical chests to sophisticated, highly decorated delicate Fabergé eggs. Members were fortunate to not only hear about their provenance but also to handle them and listen to their tunes. The eggs were exquisite. Apart from their sumptuous outside embellishment each had its own unique delicate feature inside e.g. a minute chess board with gold pieces and mini tweezers Jason with just a few of his for the players, a gold swan with a mechanical entertainers diamond necklace concealed in its wings. The start of the season! A day everyone’s been building up to all winter. Bowlers emerge from their indoor venues, winters in the sunshine and in some cases probably hibernation, blinking in the sunshine as they step on to the outdoor green. The green is in perfect condition thanks to Doug Doust who’s been feeding, mowing and watering it over the winter with his merry band of helpers. Last week a crowd of members turned up to prepare the clubhouse and the grounds, and had only just finished the job when the hailstorm arrived. Bowed but undaunted they bravely made their way inside to eat the bacon buns that were probably what they came for in the first place. It’s a packed season ahead with teams playing in a wide range of external leagues as well as friendlies, and the internal knockout competitions leading up to finals day on 14 September. Anyone wanting to play or just see what it’s all about are very welcome to come to the Open Days at Stone Street on 11 and 12 May when you will be looked after by friendly experienced players who’ll help you have a go. Recipe for Success by Sarah Thompson This starts with a massive thank you to Kelvin and the team at Hadleigh Community News for allowing me space and time to come to terms with my recent bereavement. I continue to be grateful for the privilege to write about food in my favourite magazine. The recipe itself is to celebrate the arrival of Fabulous Fungi, an exciting addition to the Friday market. As many of you will know, I am a big fan of locally grown produce, (Remember my friend BASIL? Buy And Source It Locally) so when friend Stefanie May told me she was starting up a business selling home grown oyster mushrooms, my recipe radar hunted down this simple but tasty dish, with Mark David’s expert help! Of course, you don’t have to do anything too fancy with oyster mushrooms; cooked in a small amount of butter they come up full of flavour, add them to an omelette for a really tasty lunch. Oyster Mushrooms in Cream and Sherry Sauce Ingredients: 500 gm oyster mushrooms, 2 heaped tablespoons of crème 25 gm butter, 2 cloves of garlic, crushed, ½ teaspoon dried oregano 3 tablespoons dry sherry or white wine, Grated nutmeg – a small amount Method Wipe, but don’t wash the mushrooms. This preserves flavour and nutrients. Chop them roughly. Heat the butter in a frying pan until just browning. Add the chopped mushrooms and fry them on a high heat, turning them regularly, until they start to brown. (At least two minutes) Add the sherry or wine and cook for a further two minutes. Add the garlic, crème fraiche, oregano and nutmeg. Stir and season to taste. Simmer for a further minute and then serve.

News from Whatfield CEVCP School Great excitement was had at school on Thursday 28th March when the first of our new ducklings were born. Throughout the day children were thrilled to watch the eggs rock and the ducklings make their exhausting journey out of the shell and into the incubator. We had five, a mixture of Indian runner and abacot ranger ducks they are all very cute and fluffy. We have a friendly farmer who wants to add ducks to his pond, so they will have a lovely new home after the Easter break. Our pupils thoroughly enjoyed looking after them. Whatfield school has been represented at various events over this term, including at under 9’s and under 7’s multi-skills festivals held at Hadleigh High. It is really appreciated that the High School organise brilliant sporting events which are not only designed for the older pupils but can also include younger competitors too. We also took part in a mixed school team at the Suffolk Panathlon event, where our pupils were proud to come in at 2nd place. The team comprised of pupils from Whatfield, Bildeston and Hadleigh CP, and they played well together as well as being proud to show off their silver medals and tee shirts! Sixteen our pupils also represented the school at Royal Holbrook School prior to the Easter break for the annual crosscountry event, more than 150 pupils from various schools took part and we are delighted that one of our students came in the top four and two more within the top 16. At Whatfield we have always included younger pupils in our teams and this has proven to be a positive benefit to younger, talented pupils, who get a chance to learn about playing in a team and can shine at something they enjoy! Hadleigh Art Club Activities The club continues to meet every Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Seminar Room at Hadleigh Library. New members are always welcome. The programme mapped out for May is as follows. On May 7th the afternoon will be occupied by a “Quick portrait session” which entails members of the club sitting for twenty minutes or so while the remainder execute a quick portrait. May 14th Draw amphibians! After sketching club members last week, this week is devoted to frogs, toads, newts and salamanders. Better bring photographic references rather than having live amphibians hopping around the library. May 21st Village pumps or other old water pumps. Again bring references, or if the weather permits there is a splendid pump outside the Town Hall. May 28th A town or city skyline. Either working from references or create your own… and include a splash of colour. A staggering sunset perhaps.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 As you read this, you might be enjoying a relaxing May Day break. Our volunteers always turn up, even on Bank Holidays, to care for the animals including Sky, a Whippet/Lurcher and Biscuit, a Chihuahua/Jack cross. They are a friendly pair that will not be separated and so they will stay with us for as long as it takes. Peter and Flopsy, two and a half year old rabbits and Harley, a ten month old rabbit are all really friendly and looking for a home with plenty of space to run around. Please remember, rabbits make delightful pets but they are not just for Easter. They need permanent homes that are clean, safe and secure because they can live for more than ten years. Undeterred by the bitter wind, visitors to our Easter Fair at Long Melford kept coming, most headed home with bags stuffed full of bargains and prizes. A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped make the event so successful, a fantastic £2,700 was raised for the animals. Our next event is a £1 Sale at Newton Green Village Hall on Saturday 15th June. New volunteers are always welcome, leave a message or email via our website if you are interested. Ansell Memories Cafe It’s been a fun and music filled time at the café. In addition to our regular activities, quizzes, sing-alongs and raffles, we have been lucky enough to have been joined by award winning orchestra Sinfonia Viva for the past few weeks. They have undertaken a creative music project with the café during which we have played instruments with orchestra members as well as them supporting us to compose our own piece of music. We were very proud to have this piece played by the orchestra at a concert at the United Reformed Church on the 24th April at 3pm. Members have also this month enjoyed learning some Makaton sign language during a session kindly provided by one of our fabulous volunteers, Yvonne. People come to the café for a variety of reasons. The café was initially set up for people living with dementia and their carers. These days we have widened our scope and are inviting any members of the local community who may benefit to join us, especially those who are experiencing isolation and loneliness. Some members just enjoy a catch up over a cuppa and others are enticed by the very reasonably priced hot lunch. Some particularly enjoy the wide range of stimulating social activities provided. But for most of our members, the support and friendship shared in the group is the primary reason that keeps them coming back week after week. We are an extremely friendly and welcoming group and are always happy to be joined by new faces so why not come and have a cuppa with us and see what we’re about. You can find us at the Ansell Centre, Market Place, Hadleigh every Thursday between 11am and 3pm. Sylvia Martin collects her MBE It was time to don smart hats and head to Buckingham Palace…Prince Charles was awaiting Sylvia Martin’s arrival to be awarded her MBE. Sylvia was awarded her MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) at the beginning of April for public and political service. She held senior roles in local government in East Sussex and has since moved to Raven Way, Hadleigh. Accompanied by her two daughters Alison, who lives in Assington and Lucinda who flew across for the occasion from Calgary, Canada, Sylvia had a wonderful day at the Palace followed by a celebration tea at The Ritz. It was the perfect day for wearing her new hat, which Sylvia bought from Threadneedles in the High Street. “I had a very memorable day,” Sylvia comments. “I told Prince Charles that I originally joined the Conservatives as a teenager to meet boys!” That early decision has led to a distinguished career in local government and politics and now her MBE. Suffolk Villages Festival Last two concerts of Spring programme We take great pleasure in presenting the next two concerts in the Suffolk Villages Festival 2019 Spring series. Venetian Splendour will be a rare chance to hear some of the grand ceremonial motets and instrumental pieces for divided choirs written by Giovanni Gabrielli, along with works by Schutz, Praetorius and Scheidt. Psalmody and The John Jenkins Consort will be performing the works, under the direction of Peter Holman. The concert is on Monday, 27 May at 6pm, at St Peter's, Sudbury, CO10 2EH. Reserved tickets are £18. The Third SVF Musical Tea Party will include a lavish tea accompanied by delicous seventeenth century music by Corelli, Purcell and their contemporaries. Kersey Mill Newsletter Directory of Suffolk Mills by Eileen D Blyth has recently been published by History Research. Index and Introduction to a Directory of Suffolk Millers 1086-1986 Eileen says “ I have collected a list of Suffolk Millers from many different sources including Apprentice Bonds, Census, Deeds, Directories. Leases. Members of SFHS own research. Newspapers. Parish Records, rental books, Settlement Orders, Suffolk Record Office and Wills. Then I have arranged the 56 pages into 5 sections, 1 & 2 are arranged in town order, 3 & 4 by surname and 5 & 5a are Millwrights. All this information includes a reference to the source so more research can be continued on the family or Mill you are looking for. This book came about because while researching my family tree and having found a Miller in my family in 1580 in Godalming, Surrey, and then another in 1671 in Layham Suffolk, and again in Framfield Sussex in 1576, my interest in Watermills was born. Copyright is with Eileen Blythe. It is very noticeable how many Mills were present in Suffolk prior to the turn of the 1900’s. Most villages and towns had at least one mill and several in the larger towns such as Hadleigh. What is also equally noticeable is how very few survive today and even fewer that are in working order or open to the public as a mill powered either by wind or water. Suffolk Mills Open Weekend is May 12th to 13th when most of the mills that have not been converted to residential accommodation or lost over the years are open for public viewing. No problems at all? Some people think when you become a Christian and follow Jesus, life becomes easy, you don't have problems anymore. Well, I'm sorry but that's just not how it goes! If you think Jesus is like a knight in shining armour on a white stallion who gallops in when you face struggles and the baddies just turn around and run away, then I'm sorry but that's not how things go. The Christian life isn't like that. If you're a Christian, you're not exempt from cancer, you could break your leg, lose your job or be in a car crash, you're not exempt. The good thing is Jesus left us with something to help us through the hard times. He left us His peace, He called it His shalom, so when faced with difficulties, we aren't helpless. In the Bible in John 14 v 27 Jesus tells His disciples “Peace I leave you, My peace I give you; but not as the world gives! don't let your heart be troubled or afraid” Sometimes people see Christians in times of trouble and can't understand why they aren't tearing their hair out or weeping. The answer is they have what Paul called in Philippians 4 v 7 “a peace that passes all understanding” Once you accept Christ as your Saviour and follow His teachings you will be given this, and you can face the things that distress many people with a peace in your heart. It has been a busy winter behind the scenes at the Meadow – but then, isn’t it always? The refurbishment of the pavilion is nearly complete – over the winter we have added a new heating system, refitted the bar area and bought a complete new set of tables and chairs. The only thing that remains are new windows and main door, but these should be in very soon. We also have a pull down screen, ideal for business meetings and social events. It has been a great effort by our ‘changing rooms’ team of Pete and Roger! On the pitch we also feel we are in good order – the 1st XI have made some key additions to their squad, none more so than the return of Dominic Manthorpe to the club after three seasons in the East Anglian Premier League with Bury. We also welcome our overseas player coach Kudzai Maunze, a top order batsman and off spinner who plays 1st class cricket in Zimbabwe. Allrounder Sunil Shrestha also joins the club from Camberley CC. The 2nd team will also be looking for a better season, after only surviving relegation from Division 5 because of a technicality (Brightlingsea’s withdrawal). They have a new captain in Russell Tampion, who will hope all his competitiveness and will to win will rub off on his team-mates, but it will be a tough season. One of the side’s stalwarts of the last couple of years – in fact there has probably been no greater stalwart of Suffolk and Essex cricket – has been forced to hang up his bat. But at the age of 75, and with over 200 centuries to his name, John Stuck can certainly look back on his career with pride and we wish him well. What this also means is that the team’s average age now dips from a vintage of ‘pensionable’ to that of merely ‘seen better days, aren’t crocs comfortable?’ Our Ladies team are looking forward to their third season and have been training hard at St Joes over the winter. Their first game is not until May 19th but once again I am sure their availability and their capacity to socialise will shame the Men’s sides. It will be a big day for Ladies cricket at the club on Sunday June 9th when we host a triangular T20 tournament featuring Suffolk, Northants and Norfolk. The games start at 10.30am. First Team Round Up The last four first team matches have seen us complete a tour of East Anglia - March 23rd saw a long trip to second place Godmanchester Rovers a round trip of 160 miles saw us return home defeated by five goals without reply. 30th March saw us visit Gorleston where a late goal by Mehki McKenzie saw us return home with three points in the bag. Wroxham was the next trip on 6th April and despite taking an early lead through an own goal and Kyron Andrews scoring on 25 minutes, Wroxham got on level terms at half time and won the match mid-way through the second half. Our last long trip was back to Cambridgeshire to play league leaders Histon, we unfortunately lost this one 2-1 with Romario Dunne scoring a late goal with Histon beginning present with the League Trophy after the match. Reserves Team Round Up A visit to Walsham le-Willows on 23rd March saw a narrow 3-2 defeat with George Crowe and Max Tate scoring, next up a trip to Mildenhall where again a 3-1 defeat put pay to our chances of a top two finish, Sean Liggett our scorer. The last match of the season on 6th April was Wivenhoe Reserves our visitors, we ran 7-2 winners with Sean Liggett (4) and one each by Chris Warren, Jack Benee and Shane Murphy our final league placing can be confirmed next month Under 18's Round Up A hard fought match at Felixstowe on 28th March was a deserved 2-1 win with Curtis Harvey and Ryan Chidlow our scorers, our next match was a 5-1 defeat at home to Needham Market with George Crowe getting our solitary goal. 11th April saw a 3-1 win at Stowmarket with Ryan Chidlow, Shane Murphy and Curtis Harvey on the score sheet. 15th April saw probably their best match of the season as we went goal crazy against a hard working Ipswich Wanderers outfit as we ran out winning 10-0 with a Regan Partridge hat-trick, a brace by Felix Vardon Barber and Curtis Harvey and one each for Ryan Chidlow and Dan Leggett. With two matches left to play after these notes there is an outside chance they could win their league. Veterans Round Up The Vets secured the Division 4 League Title with an emphatic win at home against Kesgrave Kestrels winning 7-0, Paul Dodsworth getting a hat-trick and Gary Bignell, Ben Dixon, Ben Goodchild and David Spraggons chipping in with a goal each. Suffolk Police were next up but we came back down with a bump as they beat us 3-0. The last match of the season was a trip to Diss Heywood where we ran out winners 4-3 in a hard fought match, the ever youthful Greg Hills scoring a hat-trick with the equally youthful Ben Goodchild scoring the other so another successful season for the Vets with back to back League Titles. On the Social Front Friday 17th May sees our Annual Presentation Evening in the Clubhouse from 7.30 pm all Supporters are welcome to attend with admission on the night Friday May 24th & Saturday May 25th with have a Beer Festival with Music from 3 pm on the Saturday Afternoon. Friday night is from 7.30 pm until 11 pm Saturday The Bar opens at Mid Day with as stated music from various acts from 3.00 pm. ‘Lavenham Airfield Walks’ Interested in the US Army Air Force’s presence in East Anglia in WWII? Then spend a morning walking in the steps of the Mighty Eighth’s 487th Bomb Group on Lavenham Airfield. You will be accompanied by guides who will take you to areas not usually accessible to the public, whilst painting a picture of operational life on the base in WWII and how the airfield will forever be associated with the creation of the film ‘Twelve O’Clock High’. The walks take place on the second Sunday of May, July and September from 10.00 – 1.30. Places are limited so booking is essential. Adult tickets cost £10, under 16s £5 (sorry no dogs) and can be booked in person at Lavenham Blue Vintage Tea Rooms in Lavenham or by telephone on 01787-248295. All proceeds go towards the construction of a memorial to those 487th Bomb Group personnel who lost their lives whilst serving at Lavenham Airfield.

Spring is just about here, and that means marathon season. With London to come later in the month, two Hares have already taken on the iconic 26.2 mile distance. First up was Paul Ballard who broke the magic four hour barrier at Manchester, running 3 hours, 56 minutes. The following week, Dean Wright scored a new personal best time of 3 hours 25 minutes at Brighton. Well done to both of them, and good luck to those yet to run. Marathon running takes a lot of training and March’s Colchester Half Marathon is used by many as a ‘tester’ to see how they are progressing. This year’s event saw eight Hares toe the line at the Community Stadium on 24th March. First to return after the 13.1 mile route was Scott Ramsey in stunning form as usual, in a time of just 72 minutes. John and Scott celebrate Aden Bell was second Hare at 1 hour 25 with their PBs at Bromley 10k Simon Fenn third in at 1hour 33. Karl Fagen wasn’t far behind at 1 hour 39, followed by Steve Hunt, Kitty Rigby, Tim Ryder and Zara Davis. Finally, Scott showed his current form again at the Bromley 10k coming second overall with a new personal best time of 32 minutes, 49 seconds. Another great run from him, but not to be outdone, the legendary John Scaife also managed a new personal best coming home in fourteenth place just two minutes later on 34:49. Also running strongly, Laura Shewbridge finished 4th female in 38:21, and Alison Hoskins completed the Hares contingent with a solid performance of her own.
Stoke by Nayland Seniors On Monday 1st April Stoke by Nayland took on Stock Brook Manor in the first round of this year’s John Day Trophy competition. This county team competition is competed for by golfers with handicaps between 13 and 28, 9 in a team playing singles match play. A very tight game ensued with both teams off similar handicaps. After 9 holes the match was level with both teams up in four and level in one. However the home team piled on the pressure on the second nine and came home with a 5 ½ to 3 ½ victory. The whole match was played in a very good spirit with excellent wins going to Dick Lumsden 7 & 5, Bob Filer 6 & 5 and Tony Denmead 6 & 5. Our next opponents are Stapleford Abbotts, with the match to be played before the May 10th.
Edwardstone Cricket Club The cricket season is fast approaching. Edwardstone Cricket Club will be playing in the Hunts county division 1 league and T20 plate tournament. We are a small village team, with a developing mixed youth section and are always on the lookout for new players of all ages and abilities. Youth training commences on the 27th April and runs until the end of July. More details are available from the website. Adults training commences from Thursday 25th April 18:30 until dusk. We have equipment and a bowling machine to aid with training and development. Training is held at Boxford Playing field along with our home games. The Nayland 10k The Nayland 10k starts at 9.30am on Sunday 30th June, at Nayland Village Hall. Families, children, amateur runners and experienced club runners take part in this annual event which supports local charities. Tickets for the fun but challenging route start at £5. Waste reducing Ooho water capsules made from seaweed will be available and runners will be awarded a unique Finisher's medal made from sustainable wood. Volunteers are needed to help on the day. Suffolk Rockets Netball Club Most of our Junior Teams have come to the end of their Winter League Season in the Colchester League, Congratulations to Celestial Rockets (school years 5,6,7) who played in the year 7 division and finished 4th, a great achievement as most players had not played netball prior to this season, Well done to Cosmic Rockets (year 7/8) who played in the year 8 division for finishing 7th, this team improved so much during the season, Apollo Rockets (year 7/8) played in the year 8 division and finished with a fantastic result of 2nd place, and a massive well done to Saturn Rockets (year 8) who played in the year 9 division for finishing 1st place with only losing 1 game all season by 1 goal a new team who were not fazed by playing older teams and kept their cool at all times. Galaxy Rockets our year 9/10 team still have 2 games left but are currently sitting in 4th place of the year 11 division. Our two Adult Teams have 1 game left in division 5 of the Adult Colchester League, this game is a Rockets V Rockets match a great way to end their first season! On April 3rd the club held its annual fundraising event 'Silly Socks' to raise money for Autism Anglia, our training was filled by players and coaches wearing their most outrageous and funny socks, the club raised £61 for the charity which supports children and adults with Autism Spectrum Condition, and their families in East Anglia. Our Walking Netball continues every fortnight at Hadleigh High Leisure Centre Saturday Mornings 910.30am, this is such a fun and welcoming session for over 16yrs, females and males, the session also provides refreshments and cake at the end. Our next sessions are 4th May, 18th May, 1st June, 15th June and 29th June.
