Coronavirus - not just a Foodbank The Coronavirus Crisis has seen Hadleigh Foodbank diversifying to meet unprecedented food need among people, and in places, we haven’t been to before. We had to consider whether we could apply the principles of the Foodbank to the food shortages that members of our community were facing, not just because of financial insecurity, although that was a factor for many of our clients, but because they were shielding, self-isolating, frightened and alone. We were able to respond straight away, and we found that there was huge interest in reasonably priced, High Street food. We approached our colleagues at the Jet Lounge, Dynasty Oriental Cuisine and Tudor Fish and Chips with a plan to deliver food to Hadleigh and the villages, and the rest is history. We have delivered a lot of food on behalf of these well loved High Street businesses who don’t have their own delivery arrangements. The Foodbank benefits from the delivery costs. Dynasty offer the Foodbank free meals which have cheered up Care Home staff and postal workers over the past few weeks. May Ng at Dynasty is delighted to be part of this community initiative, and we are grateful to her for her support. During this crisis we are providing food for children who receive free school meals. If children in your family receive free school meals please do get in touch to arrange to receive meals for them too. PPE - we have received some PPE equipment kindly donated by two residence who wish to remain anonymous. I would like to publicly applaud and thank them for such a generous and much needed donation. If you are a key worker, work in hospitals, doctors, vets, care homes and are short or need more PPE masks and gloves please get in touch. Life in GP surgeries after Covid-19 The global pandemic, COVID-19, is resulting in significant changes worldwide and will no doubt join the list of previous viruses which have shaken the nation and left devastation in their path. Many people have had to make adaptions to their routine, and ways of working, whether these relate to childcare or working from home, but for the NHS this has been a complete learning curve not just a few adaptations. For an organisation which is built on the human interactions of experts and their patients, restrictions on face to face contact mean significant change is required. The problem faced GP surgeries are the first point of call for our nation when it comes to medical care, and appointments have been, and largely remained until the current outbreak, traditional face to face sessions. In addition to in person contact with the healthcare professional this also means time spent in a waiting room with other patients prior to being seen. In response, the NHS sought to come up with new ideas to try and help prevent physical contact when not strictly required. NHS 111 was introduced in England in 2013 and has been rolled out across the UK. This was followed by patients being able to access both their medical records and book appointments online. However, in spite of these developments the majority of interactions continued to follow the traditional format. How has Covid-19 changed the status quo? The highly contagious nature of Covid-19 and the speed at which this pandemic has developed has pushed surgeries to look at remote systems in a much bigger way, quickly. Surgeries have had to take drastic action and largely close their doors in order to help prevent the spread of infection. This change in working practices has taken many forms: • delaying non-essential and non-urgent tasks to focus resources on the current crisis • offering telephone triaging to patients wherever possible • on-line consultations or video calling patients where necessary to avoid people having to leave the house. Looking forward The question is what does this mean for the future of GP surgeries? • will people feel safe going back to traditional appointments or will Covid-19 leave behind a sense of vulnerability? • will people grow to appreciate the benefits and possibilities of embracing technology, and therefore not want things to return to the ‘old’ status quo? These past weeks we have seen the NHS take fast action in order to keep clinicians safe while still offering patients appointments. Technology offers surgeries the ability to hold a mixture of non-contact appointments and advice whether through telephone or video call. The pace at which this has had to happen means that the focus has been on arranging virtual appointments but if this new norm continues post covid-19 then what does this mean for the patient? Ultimately the stark memory of COVID -19 will fade, and many will return to the normal ways of life, but undoubtedly there will be things which change forever. We will become a nation who has witnessed how technology can be used to provide and enhance healthcare provision, and that may mean that GP surgeries will need to take a new approach to how they deliver their services. Growing numbers of people are turning to online banking and shopping, as well as to medical apps. These serve a wide variety of needs, including booking NHS GP appointments, ordering repeat prescriptions and receiving healthcare advice on their mobile phones. With the undoubted advantages of online access come some disadvantages: as far as banking and shopping are concerned, the drawbacks – such as widespread closure of our local branches and favourite department stores – are perhaps more irritating than crucial. However, the stakes are higher for health, and while on-line access can provide a useful service and help prevent patients seeking unnecessary GP appointments, they can sometimes mislead them into thinking they do not need to see a doctor. Hadleigh Foodbank but NOT just a Foodbank... Food for all - supported by our community, for our community We continue to receive donations of food and money from every corner of Hadleigh and the Villages and we thank you for every single one of them. We have over 30 regular clients and have responded to one off emergency requests as well. Some people have lost their jobs and/or regular income, others are waiting for issues with school meals vouchers to be resolved. Some clients are shielding around vulnerable family members, others are isolated and frightened and can’t make their way into town. We have delivered prescriptions and pizzas, cream teas and cod and chips. We were recently approached by The Crown, Giving Tree in Stoke by Nayland with more free meals and have been able to liaise with community based voluntary organisations to get them delivered to isolated people in those communities. We are very proud to be involved with companies which provide such fantastic, delicious food. We are grateful to the Co-op and Morrison’s for their ongoing support and to everyone who puts an item in the collections which these supermarkets support. If you would like to donate to Hadleigh foodbank please contact hadleighfoodbank@gmail.com Emotional support - not just a foodbank: Mental Health Awareness Angela Gregg was particularly keen to provide emotional support for anyone who is struggling to cope with the challenges of Coronavirus and the Foodbank will fund 4 sessions of psychological support with their own psychotherapist via Skype sessions. These are very frightening and stressful times for people trying to cope with reduced income, isolation, illness and loss. If you, or someone you know, could do with talking things through, in confidence, with someone, solution focussed or goal orientated short term counselling is proven to help. Hadleigh Food Bikes - not just a foodbank

It’s been so heart warming and a real joy to see so many people cycling with (and without) children on our quieter roads. This confirms research which says that one of the main obstacles to cycling is fear of traffic. Hadleigh Foodbank are looking into how we can support the community to start cycling or carry on using bikes to get back to their essential jobs, saving money and the planet. This is part of our coronavirus crisis response. We have already been supporting our local keyworkers with PPE, hand cream and sanitiser. Some of our keyworkers in and around Hadleigh have no choice but to work, taking risks with their own health to provide essential services for us and we thank them for that. Val has been busy baking cakes and they have been delivered along with the newsletters by Sue and the trustees. For the VE Day celebrations each member was given a template to decorate a piece of bunting at home. You can see the result in the photograph. It was a special way for us all to be working together even though in isolation. The Lavenham Sinfonia The Lavenham Sinfonia are very sorry to have to inform you that the next concert on June 14th has been cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation. The Orchestra very much hope to be able to perform the concert in September, but as things stand there is a great deal of uncertainty concerning the advisability of mass gatherings and public performances. The Sinfonia is therefore not sure about the possibility of putting on a concert in the autumn but, with time, there should be some clarity on this. The Sinfonia hope very much that you and your families are staying well in these difficult circumstances. When we meet again it will truly be a cause for celebration!

Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South COVID-19 Update from Suffolk County Council The fantastic effort being provided by officers at both the Suffolk and Babergh councils continues, with both organizations reporting record low numbers of staff sickness absenteeism. Nearly all support staff are working from home or have been redeployed to other essential service areas. I have found that officers in all departments are easily contactable and send their responses incredibly swiftly. I have even had replies to emails late in the evening and at weekends! Brilliant effort all staff at both Suffolk and Babergh Councils; well done! Some examples of the great work done include: Suffolk Highways, who have made significant use of this time where traffic levels have been much lower. During March and April, they completed 6,334 repairs to the county’s roads compared to 5,345 during the same period last year, an increase of more than 18%. I have continued to discuss various roads issues in Hadleigh with them and hope to see some refurbished road markings painted on Station Rd, Friars Road/Coram Street over June and July, as well as new drop kerbs on the High Street and Lady Lane. Babergh’s waste collection contractor has restarted collecting Brown Bin garden waste and the SCC’s Household Waste Recycling Centres have reopened, including the one in Hadleigh. For this latter service there is an easy to use online booking system so that you can arrange a time to safely dispose of your items.

COVID-19 Testing 1 in 600 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Suffolk which is sits favourably with the nation average and to those of Essex and Norfolk. The Copdock test centre opened last month and offers testing on a pre-booked basis for: • All those working on the frontline in health and social care (with or without symptoms) • Patients in the NHS and residents in care homes (with or without symptoms) • All other essential workers with symptoms • Anyone over 65 with symptoms • Anyone who goes into work because they cannot work from home (for example, construction workers) and has symptoms • Anyone who has symptoms and lives with someone who meets any of the above criteria. Collaborative Communities Covid-19 Board I detailed in last month’s edition the purpose this board and how it is set up to support the most vulnerable. Since the Coronavirus pandemic, the work of the Collaborative Communities Covid-19 Board has: • Helped nearly 6,000 people through the ‘Home, But Not Alone’ emergency phoneline. Most of these calls are for food support and collection of medication. Other enquiries involve isolation and loneliness, finance, social care and mental health. • Mapped, and continue to support, more than 1,500 community groups across Suffolk who help vulnerable people. These groups deliver thousands of tasks each week across Suffolk. • Had more than 1,800 willing volunteers sign up to the Tribe Volunteer App. These volunteers also help with caller requests through Home, But Not Alone, either as an individual or linked to a community group. • Distributed £177,500 across Suffolk’s 42 foodbanks via the Suffolk Community Foundation’s Coronavirus Community Fund. • Delivered 4,100kgs of food to foodbanks across Suffolk through Fareshare. This equates to 1,230 individual food parcels.

Found temporary homes for more than 175 people who urgently needed help because of Covid-19. Distributed nearly 500 emergency food parcels to those in urgent need of food supplies. Handed-out £1,802,139 grants to voluntary and community sector organisations from members of the Collaborative Communities Covid-19 Board. This includes £636, 398 from the Suffolk Community Foundation’s Emergency Fund.
Schools Update Following on from the latest government announcement, schools and early years settings across Suffolk remain open for vulnerable children and children of critical workers only. From Monday 1st June 2020 at the earliest schools and early years settings will also open to children in early years, nursery classes, reception, year 1 and year 6. If a child’s usual school or setting is not open or has been unable to make alternate arrangements for pupils, parents can call SCC’s helpline on 01473 263985 and we will help them find a school place. For parents needing an early years placement they can contact the Family Information Service on 0345 60 800 33. Record life in lockdown for the Archives Suffolk Archives is calling on people across the county to record snapshots of their life whilst they stay at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. ‘Life in Lockdown' is a brand-new archive collection, which will preserve the history of today and help future generations better understand the lives we lead and the environment we live in. You can upload digital content such as scans of documents, emails, social media screenshots, photographs, artwork, posters or diary entries, that capture life during lockdown. Being in lockdown has changed much for many people. From our outlook on the world we live in, to the way we actually live our lives, and in spite of the negative impact of Covid-19, there are many positives for us to focus our energy on. What we at Orchard Barn are really enjoying is the move from ingrained consumerism to a mindset of self sustainability. Many people, us included, are finding joy in growing their own food and spending far more time than ever connecting with nature, whether it’s a walk in the countryside or just relaxing in our gardens, being aware of the beauty that surrounds us is a massive positive of lockdown. With the shops being largely closed, and having more time than ever to focus on our passions, we are also becoming far more creative, it’s been amazing to see everybody’s wonderful creations on social media, from the use of nettles and dandelions in food, to beautiful art, home ware and gifts created from natural materials such as wood and willow. Here at Orchard barn, this is giving us inspiration for future courses and open days for when we are once again allowed to join together as a community. We are looking forward to being able to see our old volunteers, and welcome new ones too. In the meantime, we’re sharing our lockdown activities on social media. Hello friends, welcome to my blog, and thank you for your visit. As I write there is talk of a gradual easing of the lock down, and a slow return to the new ‘normal’. You humans have had it tough this last month and we horses don’t have any idea of what you are going through but we can pick up on humans’ anxieties. Its something to do with our flight mechanism, if anyone in the herd has a fright we all catch on and want to run! It’s a wonder we can be taught to behave at all, really, and it goes to show how trust between a horse and its owner can make all the difference. So we here, at the Centre, have infinite trust in Lyn and her team to keep us safe. It’s not all about filling our bellies, despite how it looks. Behind the very important matter of food and water is the backroom team, the ground maintenance people, the able bodied riders, and of course the volunteer help for the rides. Which brings me to what I’ve heard about you people out there. Unlike horses, you have a choice in how you operate. Despite the fact that you feel worried for your safety, and that of your own herd, you do your work. You may not wake up feeling brave but none the less you go to work to keep your fellow men safe, healthy, fed and watered, and maintained in as normal a way as possible. You have something much more important than the mantle of heroism: a sense of duty, a sense of loyalty to your role, a sense of compassion and a sense of determination. I think that’s splendid. So many of our volunteers at Shelley are retired and of a certain age, confined to barracks. So they are missing out on family and friends, and all the activities that kept them young in heart. I do hope most of them can get out and walk around, enjoy the sun and wind, and keep their courage up. The live herd here just keep on eating, strolling around our lovely fields, creating work for the human team and waiting for things to get back to normal. No worries, as they say.
Churches in Hadleigh Praying for Hadleigh Despite our buildings being closed, the people of the churches in Hadleigh are still committed to praying for our town. Over the course of each year we plan to pray for every street in Hadleigh. During June we will be praying for the following streets: Week commencing 1st June - Bradfield Avenue and Bradfield Crescent; Week commencing 8th June - Brett Avenue, Delf Close, Newhaven Way, Ramsey Road and Grays Close; Week commencing Sunday 15th June – Calais Street and Meadows Way; Week commencing 22nd June – Castle Road and Castle Rise; Week commencing – 29th June – Castle Lane and Woodlands. If you know people who live in these streets, we would be very pleased if you also would pray for them. If you live on one of the streets being covered during a particular week and would welcome prayer, please get in touch. £17m COVID-19 grant funding unclaimed by small businesses in Babergh and Mid Suffolk Over £28m has been awarded to eligible small businesses, shop owners and leisure organisations in Babergh and Mid Suffolk since the launch of the Government’s Small Business Grant and Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grants at the end of March. The aim of the grants is to support businesses with ongoing costs though the COVID-19 crisis, and so far, over 2,500 business have received their grants of either £10k or £25k. Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils estimate that approximately 1,300 businesses and organisations have yet to claim the grants that they are entitled too and are urging small businesses and shop owners, those in the hospitality industry and leisure sector, as well as organisations such as sports clubs, community buildings and village hall committees who pay business rates to find out if they are eligible for the grant. Cllr Michael Holt, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Growth said: “The Government’s business grant scheme has provided much needed financial support to many of our small businesses, but we are concerned that a proportion of our qualifying businesses have not yet completed the online application form and supplied us with their details to claim their grant.” Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils are responsible for payment of these grants and have written to all eligible businesses and are in the process of contacting the remaining businesses by telephone to encourage them to apply for the grant. Cllr Gerard Brewster, Mid Suffolk Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth said: “These grants are there to help businesses with ongoing costs through the coronavirus crisis and will not need to be repaid. I urge small businesses, community building and village hall committees, and those in retail, hospitality and leisure to apply for these grants. All businesses should also seek advice about the financial support that may be available to them.” The Small Business Grant and Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grants are available to those businesses who receive small business rate relief, rural rate relief or have a business premises with a rateable value of less that £51,000. To access the grants, businesses must complete an online form to confirm their eligibility and payment details. It appears that a significant number of businesses located on industrial estates and business parks have not yet applied; possibly because they have not received the direct communications to these premises. Additional funding and financial support packages are available for businesses who cannot claim the small business grants. These include a new scheme from New Anglia LEP totalling over £10m to support businesses and economic growth in Suffolk and Norfolk, while the Government has announced a Bounce Back Loan scheme for small businesses which will provide loans of up to £50,000 which are interest free for 12 months. Businesses can search use the Government’s Business Support Finder tool for a breakdown of all the financial support available while trained advisers at the New Anglia Growth Hub can provide advice and guidance on a range of matters. The committee regret this decision but it was felt that with all the uncertainty resulting from the Coronavirus situation we could not put club members at risk. Bychoice Business Update As of 13th May, estate agents in England have been given the green light to start selling and letting homes again. Like many other businesses we are itching to get out there and get back to business as usual however, we have spent the last few weeks working on a plan for when we can do that, and how we can do it in a safe way. With many agents already talking about opening their doors to the public, we feel that this is too early for the safety of our staff and clients. We will work, as normal, behind closed doors to facilitate moves for buyers, sellers, tenants and landlords alike. We are speaking to all our clients about arranging video tours, so a property can be “viewed” before a physical appointment. For valuations, we are having detailed telephone or video conversations before arranging a physical visit. If a visit is needed, we will be prepared for the appointment with all the relevant PPE. With lettings, move in and move outs, contact will be kept to a minimum with online signing of paperwork and visiting properties as often as possible when already vacant. £250,000 Emergency Fund support awarded to Suffolk Sports Clubs The Covid-19 pandemic has created a lot of uncertainty for local Sports Clubs across the country, however, an announcement made by Sport England on the 31st March offered some hope for the sport and physical activity sector and our county is now beginning to benefit. In response to the Government’s advice and lockdown rules implemented mid-March, Sport England publicised its Community Emergency Funding opportunity, designed to support clubs and physical activity organisations to survive these unprecedented circumstances. The Community Emergency Fund is a combination of National Lottery and government funding, administered by Sport England. Grants of £300 - £10,000 were available to help cover such things as club utility costs, rent, core staffing costs and any losses since 1st March 2020. In response to the opening of this fund, Active Suffolk, the county’s Active Partnership publicised the opportunity and encouraged local sports clubs and physical activity providers to apply. Support and guidance was provided by the Active Suffolk team to identify need and help clubs submit applications to the fund. They were pleased to receive the news this week highlighting that clubs in Suffolk have already been successful in collectively receiving £250,000 of funding support. John Clough, Director of Active Suffolk, responded to the news: “We are delighted to have been able to help so many organisations across Suffolk access this much needed funding support. This funding will help clubs with their immediate needs but we must not underestimate the challenges many clubs and organisations will face as the sport and physical activity sector emerges from the current restrictions. Sport and physical activity organisations are vital to the physical and mental wellbeing of individuals and communities across Suffolk and will need to be supported in the months ahead to ensure the sector continues to thrive.” Ipswich Sports Club is one of the fortunate clubs to have been successful with its application. Andy Yorke, General Club Manager said: ‘I was delighted when Sport England confirmed our grant award. On behalf of the Club and our members we would like to pass on our huge thanks to Sport England for its recognition and support. The grant will help to cover some of our on-going staffing costs, utilities, regular costs and loan commitments and we will be back serving our members and the community as soon as it is safe to do so’. In total, 67 clubs across Suffolk have now been successful in their bid for funding from Sport England. The opportunity to apply for funding support has been welcomed by many clubs across the country, particularly those at grassroots level who may have struggled to bounce back from such challenging times. Lakenheath Football club was another to be successful in its bid. Ben Cowling Club Manager said: “The award is fantastic news for the club and its volunteers. We know that our base costs are covered until July which takes an enormous amount of pressure off the volunteers who run the club. These are unprecedented times and the response from Sport England will help ensure that we have Grassroots sport to return to in the coming months.” Along with the support from organisations such as Active Suffolk, successful sports clubs across Suffolk are also giving their thanks to the volunteers and staff that have worked tirelessly during this time to adapt and apply for funding. Nick Drane from Ipswich Basketball Club also shared his thanks to Sport England and the club’s incredible team of volunteers who put in the time to work on their successful bid, “Ipswich Basketball Club is incredibly thankful for this financial boost in what is an unprecedented time for all of us. Had we not been in such a strong financial position as a club, this could have really damaged us long term. Thankfully we have an amazing team of volunteers that work tirelessly to ensure that didn’t happen and it was those volunteers who put in the time to ensure that we were successful in our bid to Sport England.” Sport England has now paused new applications to the Community Emergency Fund to ensure that all existing applications can be assessed promptly and the much needed funds distributed to those in need. Hadleigh Community Primary School Peace Garden This Year HCPS School Council decided to overhaul an area in our grounds that had become overgrown and decided to create a Peace Garden. The idea was to have a grass area where a class could all sit to listen to a story, an area for planting as part of science learning, as well as an area for wildlife, or a quiet place to talk through difficulties. We enlisted the help of the British Legion and many members of the community have helped to transform the space – donating time, plants, plaques, bird boxes and feeders! The intention was to open the garden as part of the commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of VE Day. Due to the current Covid 19 situation this was unable to happen, but we all look forward to a postponed grand opening at a later date. For now the grass and hedging continues to grow, a family of blue tits has moved in to one of the bird boxes and plenty of creatures now live in their luxury bug hotel. Many thanks to all who have helped with this project and we all look forward to enjoying this new space.

We have been able to assess their writing and maths from afar, and the children have been given a full programme of activities to complete each day. We’re rooting for new parents during COVID-19 and beyond A Tree for Life scheme in Babergh and Mid Suffolk which offers a free tree for new parents, is now open for 2020 applications allowing families to apply from home during the coronavirus outbreak. Recognising that new parents may be feeling more isolated than usual, and looking for something to look forward to with their new arrival, Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have now opened their Tree for Life applications. It is open to all families in the districts who welcome a new arrival between 1 January and 31 December 2020, in addition to parents who may have lost a child during the same period to apply for a remembrance tree. The initiative offers parents with a new born or newly adopted child the chance to mark their arrival by planting a tree. It aims to benefit families, communities and the environment by boosting tree coverage across the district. This year’s relaunch follows a bumper 2019 scheme with over 400 trees given away earlier in the year, ahead of the coronavirus outbreak. Tree collection events were held in Stowmarket and Hitcham, where expert help was on hand to advise families on their tree choice and aftercare at home. Open to all including those without a garden, a selection of trees were also planted with families at key locations in the districts including Needham Lake, Shotley Golden Wood, Broom Hill in Hadleigh, Gallowsfield Wood in Haughley and Sproughton Millennium Green. In Babergh, where the Tree for Life scheme launched for the first time in November last year, there were 196 applicants. According to the Office for National Statistics, that means around 30% of families with newborns in our districts applied for the scheme, but now the councils are encouraging even more people to claim their free tree this year. Cllr Elisabeth Malvisi, Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “While we are in uncertain times, I hope that by opening applications now we can give our new families something to look forward to over coming months. “I’m proud that in just a matter of months, Tree for Life in Babergh has blossomed beyond expectation providing a unique opportunity to benefit our environment and support the county-wide climate ambitions, while also giving families a reason to spend time in the garden planting and nurturing their tree for the years to come. Families can apply for their tree on the councils' website with 2020 applications closing on 17 January 2021

Grayson Perry’s Grayson’s Art Club on Channel 4 has drawn a huge audience from all sectors of society. Members of the public, who submit their lockdown artwork to the programme, show how they hunger for the space and permission to be more creative in their lives. The aim of the programme is to support everyone to ‘have a go’ at being creative in any form, whether drawing, painting, cartooning, calligraphy, pottery, collage, textile work, installations, glass work, film, cake-making, song etc. Clearly the show demonstrates that art can help us understand not just ourselves but the difficult times we live in. Art can be a total escape from the worry of our current situation, but also a way to make sense of the world around us, and connect with others. The ‘Hadleigh Gets Creative’ project, launched at the start of the lockdown period, is preparing its 4th exhibition at the moment. It aims to revive Hadleigh’s High street shop windows with community artwork, but it also hopes to get us away from addictive technology, so that we don’t miss out on the very human pleasure of making something by hand ourselves. Creativity is in us all – and it’s good for our minds, our emotions and for our community. It also helps us solve problems: it is essential in the invention of a vaccine for Coronavirus, just as much as it helps us cope with adversity and glue us together. Suffolk Bereavement Support – Letting you know that we are here to help We hope all readers are well and coping with this difficult pandemic situation. A few weeks ago, who could possibly have imagined that we were about to face such a huge challenge and one which requires us to draw on all our resources. This is especially difficult when we are already experiencing the loss of a loved one. Here at Suffolk Bereavement Support we feel a little powerless in not being able to run our groups and bring together the bereaved to try to understand the range of emotions experienced and to learn and gain support from each other. Although we have explored electronic possibilities, we don't feel that these would be appropriate for the sort of groups that we offer. We want to let you know however, that we continue to be at the end of the telephone or email should anyone who has lost a loved one, and is finding adjusting difficult, wish to get in touch. We are here to offer telephone and email support and look forward to the time when we can resume meeting in groups. Stour Valley U3A Stour Valley U3A has set up a number of support systems for its members during the coronavirus pandemic. These include dedicated helplines for those self isolating in East Bergholt and Manningtree/Mistley/Lawford to help with basic needs such as food shopping and prescription collections. A general support group for members is also available for those living in East Bergholt. Lectures for April, May and June have been postponed until July, August and September, pending government advice. Wills and the NHS The virus has proved one thing – the importance of making a Will. It has highlighted the need for people to have up-to-date Wills and lasting powers of attorney (LPAs). Since changing the way we work under the new restrictions we have helped clients including front liners and elderly clients to make new Wills and LPAs. By working within the self isolation and self distancing rules we have been able to create for them a sense of being prepared for the future – in modern terms, an important box ticked. Generally, our Wills stand the test of time very well, but there are always life changing events which may prompt the need for change. These include births, deaths, marriages, children attaining 18 (end of guardianship) and families ‘fallling out’. Other key points include the fact that executors can get too old (or may be deceased). Is there a younger person who can step up? Also, gifts to family and friends may need to be looked at. Have these gifts kept up with inflation, or are they too generous in today’s recessionary times? There have been some changes to the tax laws (such as those introducing the residential nil rate band) which may need to be considered. Also, some highly regarded charities have emerged in recent years which may challenge those appointed in the old Wills. Most of these changes can be dealt with economically by an alteration to the Wills. LPAs have become very popular in recent years as people tend to live longer lives with the need for children (usually) to take recognised care for them. The areas covered are Property & Finance and Health & Care. We are happy to explain the benefits of LPAs and our role is to draft the documents, act as ‘Certificate Provider’ and obtain their validation by the Office of the Public Guardian. The validation process is taking longer because of the effects of the pandemic, and we expect further delays once this is over. For this reason, we are advising elderly clients to go ahead with making and registering their LPAs without further delay. The new NHS ‘opt out’ system for organ donation took effect on 20 May. This is a matter which we consider when advising older clients, and it is our practice to prepare an Advance Decision’ (setting out their medical treatment preferences) for the client to sign. We then send this to their GP asking for the information to be placed with their medical records. Dear Sir, I have read Lindsay Panton’s letter and wonder what enquiries were made before buying The Folly and the land down to the river. A research of the old records would have revealed that the course of the River Brett used to run though The Folly grounds and through the adjoining old orchard and grass field below Tinkers Cottage, before re-joining the river somewhere further downstream, alongside the rugger ground. I also wonder if she realises that the owner of The Folly is responsible for the river bank running alongside the property, which in this case is the brick wall, which at some stage will need major repair, if not replacement. Not something even worth thinking about! I believe the Town Council, as owners of the Football Ground, are responsible for clearing the river blockage adjoining their land. This is a major exercise following the recent flooding and uprooting of trees. Clare Dawson
Dear Sir, I am writing to say thanks to the army of volunteers at Hadleigh Cares who have come to Hadleigh's aid during the Corvid 19 outbreak. The lockdown occurred 8 weeks ago and it is time to acknowledge the work of these unsung heroes. So why say thank you now? For many who volunteered delivering support has become a full time job, in brief it is exhausting and a couple have now had to self isolate. So this support has not been risk free to the persons who has given up their time. Many of these people do not want to be glorified so I have just provided their first names, to maintain their privacy. However, I hope that many of you will recognise them and this simple roll call shows what a community effort has taken place. Firstly, there are the area coordinators, Carolyn, Liz, Jo, Helen, John, Kate, Jeanine, Hannah and Caroline. These people have organised the rota, linked with the providers of hot food, the pharmacy for prescriptions, local councils, doctors' surgeries, and the local vicar ‘network’. Second, there are the marvellous people who have shopped, acted as drivers, delivering prescriptions (daily), vegetable boxes, hot meals and pre-cooked meals 4 times a week. In addition, thank you to the numerous people who have sorted out the many problems to make it all work. Also thanks to the following, Mike and his team at Battleburys (King's Head), along with Mark (Cooking Experience), for cooking meals throughout the week. To give you an idea of the scale of the support provided. Last week 300 were delivered and since the beginning 1300 meals. Thanks to the people at Mill House, and the two Boots for making the ordering and the picking up of prescriptions as easy

Lastly, Jess who has linked into the network of local Vicars so a response can be provided outside of Hadleigh in the local villages. Communities benefit from Coronavirus funding boost totalling over £100,000 Communities have received more than £100,000 in vital funding from Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils – helping them to respond to Covid-19 and paving the way for a stronger society. Both councils acknowledge the key role of community groups, along with town and parish councils, in easing the challenges faced by residents at this time. In recognition of this and the financial hardships arising from the pandemic, a new Covid-19 Emerging Needs Grant was set up last month, ensuring muchneeded funding could be provided to new and existing groups across both districts. Grants of up to £2,500 can be applied for to cover increased costs incurred as a result of the Coronavirus. The grant has a straightforward applications process, allowing applicants to receive funding within weeks and resulting in almost 80 applications being submitted to date. This figure is set to increase, with grants continuing to be made available. The councils’ Grants team has responded to 98% of applicants so far and grants totalling more than £101,250 have already been approved. Included within this figure is over £15,000 of funding for local foodbanks. Grants have also been offered to organisations providing meals on wheels, community information services and mental health outreach programmes. Grant recipient Mencap said: “This grant will ensure that we will be able to provide the helpline service in Babergh and Mid Suffolk to people with a learning disability and their families and carers. In this challenging and unprecedented time, the impact of this will be vital.” The crucial work of community groups has been complemented by the Home, But Not Alone service, set up the county-wide Collaborative Communities Board - providing emergency assistance by linking TRIBE volunteers to vulnerable residents with care needs or loneliness. Since its launch at the end of March, the helpline has received over 8,500 calls. Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have managed referrals for its districts, including the distribution of vital medication and urgent requests for food. One caller said: “A lady very kindly gave me her direct line number and arranged an emergency food parcel. Although we'd only spoken in the afternoon, the food parcel arrived by 6pm that night, which was absolutely marvellous.” This invaluable support continuing, as the virus and its aftermath remains, is a priority for both councils. Plans are being put in place to cement the community groups and good neighbour schemes created in response to Covid-19, with localities officers from the councils’ Communities team aiding with this. Cllr Derek Davis, Cabinet Member for Communities for Babergh District Council said: “I’d like to thank communities in Babergh who have demonstrated immense strength and resilience at a time of national emergency. They are doing an amazing job and we will continue to do all we can to support their efforts.”

Owls Under Lockdown Established in 2001, the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary in Stonham Aspal is dedicated to the conservation of Britain’s wild owls and other birds of prey. Activities include the rescue and rehabilitation of injured wild raptors, maintaining a network of wild own nest boxes to replace the diminishing number of natural nesting sites throughout the county, and providing information & advice on wildlife conservation to the general public plus a variety of education services to local schools. As a charity, S.O.S. largely depends on donations from the visiting public for its revenue. However, whilst this vital funding stream has temporarily disappeared as a result of the coronavirus ‘lockdown’, life is being maintained behind closed doors in order to keep the dedicated bird of prey hospital running as it receives new cases and prepares existing ones for release back to the wild, fit & flying free. During lockdown our dedicated team of falconers are working in reduced teams whilst some are on furlough, spending time looking after the husbandry of the 80 birds resident at S.O.S. Besides making sure they are cleaned, fed and cared for, many of the flying team who give the spectacular demonstrations through the summer are being exercised daily, relishing their return to the skies after a winter generally resting and moulting through a new set of feathers. Meanwhile breeding season is upon us and many of the birds in aviaries at S.O.S. are sitting on eggs, hopefully to produce youngsters who will be transferred to other conservation-minded centres like ours in order to maintain and provide fresh bloodlines of these native species for the future, many of whom are under threat. Sad to say, self-isolation circumstances prevent volunteers Roger & Kevin of the Thornham Owl Project from touring the network of wild owl nest boxes for the time being, but they hope to be able to re-commence visits once the lockdown is eased. Boxes will then be inspected for occupation and fledgling birds ringed, weighed and measured for information which is passed to The Barn Owl Trust as part of national ornithological surveys. Where nest boxes are vacant, the opportunity is taken to clean, repair or replace them. We hope the many supporters of S.O.S. throughout East Anglia and beyond will be interested to hear about ‘owls under lockdown’ and we look forward to seeing them again once the epidemic has been crushed and normality returns.

Fidelis Activity News Members are doing their best to keep busy during the lockdown period. Many are taking advantage of the good weather to complete their ‘to do’ list of jobs inside and outside the house. Gardens have been a boon for our sanity and well-being. Unless in total lockdown, most manage a walk each day often at the crack of dawn or late afternoon when there are less people around. Connecting via the phone or WhatsApp has provided an essential link to friends, family and topical humour. The lack of available hairdressers was also on everyone’s lips. Not something that would concern Boris. Fidelis Committee gathered this feedback in the course of telephone chats with members during the past restrictive weeks. Many of their views on social isolation are on display on the High Street as part of the Hadleigh Gets Creative initiative. Sadly, since March all the group’s activities have been postponed to a later, unknown date. The next challenge is to secure monetary refunds on Empire cinema tickets bought for streaming in performances before the pandemic. We are eternally grateful for our amazing Health Centre, and all the local businesses which have soldiered on taking risks so that we can shop locally and safely. Many members, in total isolation, have also been pleased to use all or some of the services provided by Liz and the Hadleigh Care team of volunteers and Angela’s Hadleigh Assist group. Hadleigh Branch Royal British Legion marks VE Day 75 Peace Garden at the Community Primary School Work on VE Day commemorations started back in November 2019 when the Branch started work on creating a Peace Garden at the Community Primary School. The youngsters of the school council came up with the design and the RBL rallied the volunteer workforce. Over a number of weekends the site was converted from an overgrown wasteland to a fantastic useable space. Thankfully most of the work was completed before lockdown. The finished garden has some key features. For example; a replica WW1 trench and a memorial planting bed for reflection of past toils and sacrifice. A bug super-highway with its own hotel to generate interest in local wildlife and the environment. Raised planting beds for science lessons where the children can see for themselves the plant growing process. And of course a fantastic outdoor space for reading and listening to stories. The original plan was to open the garden on Thursday 7 May 20. Sadly, with lockdown this did not happen, but it is hoped to have an official opening event later in the year.
The Mural on the Ipswich Building Society wall Following the success of the Great War mural that was painted on Partridges wall in 2018, it was decided to create another mural. This time depicting an iconic WW2 scene and to be painted on the side wall of the Ipswich Building Society on Angel Street. Huge thanks to IBS for their support. The mural is from a photograph taken on D Day, 6 June 1944. While this was almost a year before VE Day, it was one of the most significant events of WW2 and an iconic WW2 scene. It shows 48 (Royal Marines) Commando landing at JUNO Beach. The beach was opposite the approaches to Saint-Aubin, where there was a significant threat from 50mm guns. They landed at high tide over the beach obstacles. The Unit losses for the day were 50%, with three quarters of them on the beach. Many of those who fell are buried in Bayeux War Cemetery.
A key principle of the RBL is Remembrance and honouring those who sacrificed so much and who helped us through the challenging times, whether its the older generation who got us through WW2 or the current generation of NHS, carers and key workers who are helping to keep us safe today. The work being done locally by dozens of volunteers who have stepped up under the banner of Hadleigh Cares to help those in need is admirable and we thank them all. Included on the mural is a small rainbow tribute to our present day key workers.
Care Home Gang Show The Branch were also planning to hold a very special tea party for 75 special guests all aged 75 years or over, to be held in the Town Hall. This would have included a 1940’s fashion show and a wartime singalong. Sadly this event had to be cancelled. Undeterred, the Branch took the gang show on the road and visited six care homes to entertain the residents. Careful planning was needed to ensure ‘social distancing’ guidelines were met, but at each home, residents enjoyed a 30 minute trip down memory lane with a collection of WW2 classic songs. This was a particularly poignant event as many of the residents had lived during the war years, including a number of veterans. Each show finished with a huge thank you for the carers and key workers and of course the final song was ‘We’ll meet again’.
VE Day Home Displays With formal VE Day plans cancelled everyone was asked to mark VE Day by decorating their home and holding a tea party in their garden. As the weather was particularly nice on the day, everyone get involved. The Branch arranged a competition for the best home display, with cash prizes for the best. Thanks go out to the supporters who put forward the prize money. 1st prize, £50 went to Angel Street address, 2nd prize, £30 went to Duke Street address and 3rd prize, £10 went to Aldham Road address.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club This is the second article I am writing for the online version of the Community News and already this is the June edition. The garden has been thoroughly weeded, plants have been staked and gaps have been filled with one or two of the plants that I either took cuttings from, or divided in readiness last autumn for a couple of plant sales that unfortunately never happened. I am still manfully watering them and repotting where necessary, they are growing so well I shan't be able lift them on to a sales table at this rate! Last year I took pity on a large pot of delphiniums that were in a sale at the end of the season outside Asda in Stowmarket, I think it was £1.50 and when I got them home and took them out of the pot there were in fact five plants that had been crammed in together, no wonder they looked desperate. I potted them on individually and four of them rallied, I planted them in the garden in the autumn, three in one border and the other I grew on over the winter in a pot. Of the three planted together two made it through the soggy winter but just as new shoots appeared they were munched by slugs or snails, the hot dry weather in April helped and they put on some more growth. Tidying up the shed I found two bags of wool pellets I had bought last year which act as a slug and snail deterrent, I had used them around the vegetables and, apart from a smell of wet sheep when it rains, they seemed to be quite effective. So I have put a little pile of them around each delphinium plant in hopes of keeping the slugs and snails away - my own little form of social distancing! The futures we can choose During lockdown many of us have taken comfort in natural surroundings, walking, exercising, cycling, sitting in gardens, or tending to plants. We’re also taking stock of what’s important in life, such as the security and sense of connection we can get from friends, family and being a closer community. People everywhere are talking about how to seize this Covid moment to change the world we live in for the better of all. Undoubtedly we need to get our economy running again. However, if we’re to avoid a crisis more severe and unstoppable than the present one, we need to balance a more sustainable relationship with the planet with the benefits of an advanced economy. One amazing and unplanned outcome from the global lockdown is the improvement in fresh air and lower output of CO2 into the atmosphere, due to reduction in transport, food waste and industry. All of this will be lost unless politicians act globally to ensure 'green growth economies', allowing us to live better lives but with less environmental cost. Our contributions as voters, consumers, workers, employers and neighbours are also crucial. One simple thing we can all do is reduce our fuel consumption, including use of cars, airplanes, and food waste. Additionally, is your electricity generated from coal, gas and nuclear, or from renewables such as wind and sunshine? Lots of energy companies offer 'green tariffs', but some are much greener than others. As the amount of green energy grows, it’s easy for energy companies to buy some of their supply from green sources and offer it as a niche product to their customers. But until enough of their customers go green, they won't buy more. Award winning restaurant The Crown, Stoke by Nayland, delivers free meals to local care workers The team at The Crown in Stoke by Nayland, Suffolk, are volunteering to cook and deliver free meals to care workers in the local community. The Good Food awarded Gastro Pub 2020 and Good Pub Guide’s Best Pub in Suffolk had to close temporarily in line with lockdown restrictions, but since then have decided to use their kitchens to cook meals for local key workers. Over 1000 meals per week are now being provided to local hospices, care homes and a local food bank. The Crown, recently acquired by Chestnut, is one of their eleven pubs and restaurants involved in the ‘free meals’ initiative. Funded entirely by the goodwill of the local community and businesses, Chestnut launched ‘The Giving Tree’ which is dedicated entirely to supporting its local communities with ‘not for profit’ initiatives. The ambition is to raise over £50,000, which means 20,000 free meals for key workers across the East Region. Nicole Barrett, General Manager at the Crown says “Being able to actively give back to our community has given us all a tremendous boost during this difficult time. Our chefs were eager to volunteer and cook, while our bar and hotel team have been supporting by packaging, labelling and delivering,” “I’ve personally contacted local care providers and it’s clear their staff desperately need a decent meal, while working a busy shift. They work long hours and can’t get out to buy food because of lockdown. What they are dealing with is hard; so we are doing what we can to give them a lift when they need it most and we have received some lovely feedback. Small businesses to benefit from new innovation and growth fund Councillors have agreed a £300,000 funding programme for small businesses in towns and villages across Babergh and Mid Suffolk to be allocated over the next three years. With many businesses currently facing uncertain and difficult times, the new fund scheme from Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils will provide a much needed boost to businesses after the coronavirus crisis to help sustain and create jobs, provide opportunities to grow and innovate as well as react to the changing business landscape. Small businesses from start-ups to those looking to expand, will be able to apply for a grant from one of four different funding streams: Growth and increased Productivity Fund Enterprise and Innovation Fund High Street Premises Enhancement Fund Environmental Sustainability Fund The grants can be used in a variety of ways from improving environmental outcomes and sustainability, accessing professional advice and training, improving disabled access and business frontage or for the development of technology-based business solutions. The grant value will be up to £2.5k for each of the funds except the Enterprise and Innovation Fund which will have a maximum limit of £5k. The criteria, eligibility and application process will be confirmed once the business grant fund programme is launched later this year. Cllr Michael Holt, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Growth said: “This new business fund demonstrates our commitment to driving growth and innovation whilst also recognising our High Streets needs and encouraging sustainability and reducing energy costs in our districts, which will be exceedingly important following the impact of COVID-19 on our business landscape.” Cllr Gerard Brewster, Mid Suffolk Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth said: “We understand that small businesses are at the heart of our communities and this funding scheme can enable enterprise and economic growth to help businesses grow and diversify as well as increasing employable skills and aspirations to support the needs of the wider community.” This new funding programme is entirely separate to the emergency help given to support individuals and businesses as part of the council’s immediate response to COVID-19 and instead looks to help businesses plan and deliver their future growth. The business grant programme reflects Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council’s commitment to supporting small and medium sized businesses, which make up 99.6% of the registered businesses in the Districts, as was outlined in the Joint Open for Business Strategy adopted in February 2018. Our family of swans Oblivious of the Covid19 epidemic our ‘resident’ pair of swans built their nest on raised mud near the mill and provided a great deal of interest and entertainment during March, April and May. First came the nest platform, then 10 eggs, over a month of keeping them warm and eventually five healthy cygnets. The nest became a bit of a tourist attraction as the Hadleigh Layham circuit has become a regular exercise route for walkers, runners and cyclists in recent weeks.
There was a bit of drama when two cygnets were swept through the overflow channel followed by a worried parent. It was the prompt action of Clair and Guy Lawrence and their son Harry who took some risk to rescue the birds and return them to the river. Thank you all.

Support for our council tenants Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have introduced measures to prevent the future eviction of any council tenant who cannot pay their housing rent as a direct result of COVID-19. In addition to a range of measures announced yesterday to protect the council’s workforce, residents and services over coming weeks, the councils have now moved to reassure council tenants that they will not lose their homes due to loss of income because of coronavirus. While the Prime Minister today announced emergency legislation to protect private renters from eviction, the councils pledged to work with tenants too, in order to protect them and relieve current anxieties around the impact of the virus. Mid Suffolk District Council’s cabinet member for housing and communities Cllr Julie Flatman said: “We understand how anxious people are and want to work with our tenants to ensure they can still cover their bills as a result of coronavirus. We always encourage tenants to get in touch as soon as possible if they are struggling to pay their rent as we can offer a range of support and advice.” Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for housing Cllr Jan Osborne said: “We don’t want anyone having the additional worry of losing their homes if they are unable to work as a result of coronavirus and are facing financial hardship as a result. We will always support people who are experiencing difficulties – but now more than ever. No one will face eviction if they cannot pay their rent as a direct result of coronavirus.” Tenants who feel they may need support should contact the income management team at hraincometeam@baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk and there is further advice for tenants on the councils’ webpage.

New grant scheme opens for small businesses A new Discretionary Grant is now open for businesses based in shared offices or other flexible workspaces, market traders, bed and breakfasts and small charity properties. As part of the Government’s extended package of COVID19 support, the grant is for businesses who are not eligible for either the Small Business or Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant Funds but still have ongoing fixed property-related costs such as rent, license fees, hire or mortgage payments. To qualify for the Discretionary Grant, businesses must be permanently operating out of either: a share of a larger business premises which is rated for business rates purposes (of £15,000 or less or £51,000 or less in the retail, hospitality and leisure sector) a regular market stall on the weekly markets in Hadleigh, Stowmarket and Sudbury a bed and breakfast premises in a residential property that is subject to council tax and holds a current food safety licence a charity premises which is rated for business rates purposes and has a rateable value of £15,000 or less. To access the Discretionary Grant, eligible businesses must complete an online application form and provide evidence they operate from a single premises, were trading at the premises on 11 March 2020 and demonstrate a significant fall in income due to COVID-19. The first phase of applications is open until Friday 19th June. The value of the grants in Babergh and Mid Suffolk range between £2,500 £5,000 and can only be claimed by businesses who have been unable to access any other grants (excluding the Self-Employed Income Support Scheme). The grant allowance has been set individually by each local authority depending on the level of funding they have received from Government while also aiming to support as many small businesses as possible. Unlike the Small Business Grant Fund and Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant Fund, which allocated grants automatically to certain businesses based on their rateable business rates, the Discretionary Grant will take into account certain factors when determining the grant allocation. These factors include fixed costs, number of employees, ability to trade online, whether a business has had to close completely and the scale of losses due to COVID-19. Cllr Michael Holt, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Growth said: “We understand the challenges that our small businesses have faced due to the coronavirus crisis and we welcome the introduction of the Discretionary Grant that will help smaller businesses in shared spaces, market traders as well as B&Bs and charities who have been unable to access any other financial support.” Cllr Gerard Brewster, Mid Suffolk Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth said: “I urge small businesses with property costs to find out whether they qualify for the Discretionary Grant and apply as soon as possible. There are a huge number of ongoing challenges for our smaller businesses and charities and this fund could make a huge difference to those that are struggling in the current economic climate.” Once the first phase of the Discretionary Grant funding has closed, the Council will review the remaining budgets and hope to open the grant to other types of small businesses in the districts. The Small Business Grant and Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant Funds are both still open for new applications. Travelling during a global pandemic After finishing University, I only had one plan for 2020: travelling. After months of working and saving hard, it was finally time to begin my world travel adventure along with my boyfriend. Leaving dos were had, goodbyes and farewells were said, and finally we were boarding our 13-hour flight to Buenos Aires, the first stop on our world tour. We certainly were not expecting to see home soil for at least 10 months. At this point, ‘coronavirus’ was but a news item; something we should be thinking about, but by no means worrying about. After waiting for what felt like days in the stuffy security line and hoisting on our fresh-out-the-packaging backpacks that we were so sure we would need for all the miles we were to embark upon, we set off out of the airport towards the city we were planning to stay in for at least three months. On first appearances, it looked great. I couldn’t help but remark on the ‘Europeanness’ of the city with tree lined avenues and gothic style buildings – indeed, it could’ve been mistaken for a sprawling European metropolis but my tiredness from the long flight quickly reminded me of the distance from home. Although on first arrival the mention of ‘coronavirus’ was still uncommon, its entrance into everyday vocabulary was noticeable by the latter half of the week. Whilst the English friends we had met remained defiant as to the virus’ ability to stop us on our travels, I had read the news from home – the virus had hit and talks of social restrictions were imminent. But I had to admit, the atmosphere in Buenos Aires was still very relaxed. It was tricky to predict the path that the Argentinian government were going to take but so far, tourist sites and tours remained open and the city was bustling. The atmosphere changed very quickly over the weekend (14-15th Mar). We could sense that the city was becoming tense. Larger gatherings of people were being cancelled, however, advice for tourists was hard to come by. At this point, we (like many others) believed these measures to be simply precautionary to prevent more long-term disruption to Argentina's already fragile economy. Whilst out for dinner with friends, we were told the last direct flight to the UK would depart on Monday 16th. Our optimism (or naivety, perhaps) meant we were determined to hold out, plus tickets were selling for over £1000. By Tuesday, internal travel within Argentina was suspended and the city’s lively neighbourhood of Palermo, where we were staying, went quiet. Police roamed the streets, bars were closed and restaurants empty – it was the definition of a ‘ghost town’. We became obsessed with checking the gov.uk website for concrete travel advice, but to little avail. We took the difficult decision to book a flight back to the UK for the following Monday via Brazil (whose border with Argentina remained open) and kept our fingers crossed that it would not be cancelled, though our worries quickly mounted. Our anxieties, and information from home, led us to look for flights departing sooner. We stayed up until 2am, phoning to cancel our initial flight in order to use the money to book the new one, only to find that the flights were no longer available once directed to the payment screen. Panic began to set in. We scrambled to re-book our initial flight in order to retain some security. Suddenly, late on Wednesday evening, the stream of advice from on the gov.uk website changed again. Now, they were claiming the Argentinian authorities were planning to ban all international travel by the weekend. Naturally, the panic levels rocketed once more. Back online, we scoured the internet for a new flight and finally secured one leaving on for the UK on the Friday, via Brazil and Spain. We just needed to wait and hope for a smooth journey. Of course, it couldn’t be as easy as that. On Friday morning, after the Argentinian government had announced official national lockdown the night before, with breaches incurring fines and even custodial sentences, our preorganised lift to the airport cancelled. With very little competence in speaking Spanish, we resorted to hunting for a taxi on ride-hailing apps; afraid of how strict the police were enforcing the government’s proposal if we ventured outside to hail a cab. After several cancellations, we found a driver, Miguel, who accepted our trip to the airport. The streets were eerily quiet and the absence of staff at the tolls, as well as Miguel’s dodging of police checkpoints, meant the journey on the motorway was quicker than expected. We bid our farewells to the driver and, after showing our passports and boarding passes, were granted access into the
airport. Finally, with the plane journey in sight, we could relax (a little). The departures hall was quiet but for a small assortment of travellers and backpackers anxiously waiting to return home. The confusion regarding travel advice was highlighted when the airline check in desk employee questioned a UK national on the status of the border between Argentina and Brazil. Thankfully, after returning from the back room, she confirmed that it was only the land border that had closed and flights were still permitted. After over 25 hours of gruelling travel; from Buenos Aires to Sao Paolo, Sao Paolo to Madrid and Madrid to London, we had finally made it to Heathrow. Without any sort of checks or screening, we were whisked through security and customs without any instruction regarding infection prevention measures we should take, just 2 days before the UK lockdown started. Amazingly, this has also been the case for over 100,000 others entering the UK from overseas since the lockdown here began. Whilst bitterly disappointed my 2020 will not be what I had imagined, with still so many UK nationals stranded abroad, I feel incredibly lucky to be home and healthy with my family after such a lengthy and confusing ordeal. Rotary Review This is a short update on Club activity (or should it be inactivity!) during these strange times. Most members are self isolating due to health or age concerns but one or two are getting around, working from home or carrying out charitable work in the community. Efforts are being made to arrange club meetings via Zoom and when this is up and running it is hoped that maybe half the members will join in. Many local clubs are already using the system as are the District officers, Rotary in Britain and Rotary International. Although fundraising is severely curtailed many clubs are using reserves and other ways to maintain donations to charitable organisations. Hadleigh Club is among these and members are donating the amount they would pay for a lunch meeting to the charitable fund. In this way help has already been given to Hadleigh Food Bank and funds are due to go to St Elizabeth Hospice and the Childrens Hospice (EACH). The Club will dispense further funds over the next few weeks to local charities whose funding has been seriously affected by the shutdown. After an enforced break of far too many weeks the 2 courses at Stoke by Nayland are once again open for play but, at least for the time being, restricted to 2 balls with social distancing a priority. Really this is a small price to pay to enable us to get back to a game we love. The government has only in the last few days announced that 4 balls can now be allowed, and the club are looking at ways in which they can make this change whilst still respecting the essential social distancing. Both courses are looking in superb condition and much credit must go the green staff who have been very restricted in what they have been allowed to do during the time that the courses were closed down. During the weeks that the courses were closed to play the proprietors very kindly allowed local residents to use the course for essential exercise. Many took up this opportunity and enjoyed watching the wildlife, who had never had the benefit of the area to themselves before - birds spotted included kingfishers, buzzards, cormorants, heron, oyster catchers, jays and red kites. Many congratulations to Richard Allen, the Stoke by Nayland men’s Captain on holing his tee shot on the Gainsborough 9thHole on the 23rd May. Playing with fellow member, Brian May, into a slight wind, Richard hit a lofted hybrid well, with a gentle draw and it bounced a couple of times before rolling into the hole. This was Richard’s 2nd Hole In One, coincidently the other was on exactly the same hole but described by Richard as “a scuffy shot that bounced down through the light rough. Didn’t see the ball go in and was about to abandon searching for it when a playing partner found it in the hole!” We wonder when was the last time that a current SbN Captain got a hole in one?

What’s a chatty Chihuahua like me to do now? Visitors cannot come in to see our animals and we cannot hold any fundraising events - my two main subjects of conversation gone. Fortunately our volunteers are always coming up with interesting ideas, like Sharon, a professional seamstress who is sewing washable, pleated face masks in triple layered dense cotton. Jayne is busy knitting ‘Rainbow of Hope’ car hangings and both items are selling well. The ladies suggest a minimum donation of £2 per item. We may only be a small local charity but we have homed many animals over the past twenty seven years and although life has changed beyond belief, we are still here to help or advise regarding any animal in need. Our hard working ladies and gentlemen exercise and care for the animals every day, with maybe a few extra cuddles. Thank you to all the shops that host our food collection bins or donate food and vegetables from their own stock. More than ever, we are grateful to them and the Public for their continued support. Given a choice, we would ask for kitten food because it is that time of the year again!
