Hadleigh DAA named Chairman’s Charity Hadleigh District Councillor is elected Babergh Chairman and names Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance as her Charity for 2019-20. Cllr Grandon was first elected to Babergh District Council in 2011 and had served as Cabinet Member for Communications before being nominated as Chairman. Kathryn is the Independent Member for Hadleigh South. Cllr Grandon has chosen the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance (DAA) as her charity. Hadleigh DAA is a local charity affiliated with the national Dementia Action Alliance, which works to transform health and social care outcomes for people affected by dementia. The Hadleigh branch, founded in 2014, the Hadleigh DAA has already trained 1,800 Dementia Friends, enabled 39 businesses to become Dementia Friendly and supports 3 weekly Dementia-inclusive social activities. Cllr Kathryn Grandon, Babergh District Council’s new Chairman, said: “I am pleased to nominate Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance as my charity. I first became involved when the organisation started, in 2014, during which time I, and many others, have learnt about the impact of dementia and the number of people it may affect. The charity is very active in Hadleigh and surrounding villages; I have attended the regular social events the charity holds for people living with dementia and their carers – they are a lifeline for many and they are fun occasions. I think the work the organisation does to make Hadleigh dementia friendly and raise awareness is very important too, so I am delighted to give Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance my support.” Tracey Loynds of the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance said “Cllr Grandon has been a supporter of the HDAA since we were formally recognised as working to become a dementia friendly community in 2014. Selecting us for her year of fundraising will support our work in making Hadleigh a dementia friendly town which we are immensely grateful.”

Moving in 2019? Don’t pay twice for conveyancing When you move home, selling and buying property, you will need to employ the services of a conveyancing solicitor to deal with the legal aspects of the transaction, for which there is a legal fee. Paying twice when transactions fall-through What many home movers don’t realise is that if your transaction falls-through, which happens for many reasons and with increasing frequency, you will still be charged by your conveyancing solicitor for the legal work undertaken up to the point the transaction fell-through. This means, you pay legal fees to your conveyancing solicitor for the transaction that fell-through and then have to pay them again for the legal work on the next transaction, which will hopefully be a successful one that goes through to ‘completion’. You essentially pay for your conveyancing twice. How common is it for property transactions to fall-through? Rightmove reports that nearly 30% of property transactions fell-through in 2018, which is significantly more common than most people realise. Some commentators also believe the current economic uncertainty and slow property market may cause this percentage to increase as buyers and sellers become more cautious and risk-averse, making them more likely to pull-out of a deal. How to avoid paying twice for conveyancing The only way to protect yourself from the risk of paying twice for your conveyancing is to instruct a no sale, no fee conveyancing solicitor. Hadleigh Walkers July’s walk on Saturday 13th will start and finish at Polstead and is a very pleasant 7 miles. We will meet at 0930 at the Polstead Cock and then walk to Mark Wood, Round House Farm, Bobwright’s Farm, Nether Hall Farm, Thorington Street, Valley Farm, Scotland place, Frog Hall then past Polstead Church and back to the start. We should be finished around 1230. If anyone is in need of transport please let us know and we will see if there is any opportunity for car sharing. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy or rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. Looking further out to August, we are planning a longish walk from Hadleigh going out to the Wenhams, Holton St Mary, Shelley and back to Hadleigh via Layham. More details next month. Mavis Gordon (front left) with some of the Country Threads Group and the finished quilt. What a labour of love the quilt has been. Without the help of a sewing machine, the Country Threads Group has patiently united over 1,000 pieces of fabric to create the most beautiful double sized patchwork quilt. The cream background shows the carefully selected cotton prints to advantage. The quilt, which was started in March, was completed at a group workshop three months later. Team leader, Mavis Gordon is no stranger to a project of this magnitude having worked with the ladies on a similar quilt several years ago. Apart from the pleasure derived from this kind of group activity, there is another motive; to raise money for the invaluable work of the St Elizabeth Hospice, Ipswich. Mavis is currently working with the Hospice fund raisers to explore the best way to make the most money from their wonderful creation. More news in future editions of HCN. Veterans with 1,173 years of Living History In recent years the Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project has taken local children to the battlefields of France and Belgium to learn about history. This year the project took local veterans to the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. Rather than learning about history, this small group with the collective age of 1,173 years old have played a part in creating our recent history.

Come along to support our primary school at our fun-filled Summer fete! On Saturday 6 July between 12-3pm, Bildeston Primary School will be providing a great range of activities, food and entertainment for all ages. It’s free to attend, so why not pop by to sample some refreshments while you check out the creative entries for this year’s scarecrow competition? You can enjoy some hot food freshly-cooked on the BBQ, complemented by a cold drink (a selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will be on sale). Teas and coffees and a selection of delicious cakes will also be available. There will be plenty to entertain the children, with: face-painting, toybola, fossilfinding lucky dip, panning for gold, pick-a-lolly, nail bar, and a craft corner where children can design and decorate wooden keyrings, ceramic flower pots and pencil cases! This year the children have been asked to use their imagination to design their own scarecrow; the winning entry of this completion will be announced by our headmistress Ms Golding during the fete. If there is any energy left to spare, the children can let off some steam on the giant inflatable assault course or take part in the water warriors activity. A real digger will also be visiting the school! Don’t forget to purchase your raffle tickets before you leave to be in with a chance to win some fantastic prizes. Fidelis Activity News AGM & Summer Supper: In spite of the lousy weather, Fidelis members continued with their summery theme for the evening and sported colourful flowery outfits. The welcome drink was even more welcome as ladies came in from the rain. AGM business started with Chairwoman, Liz Wilson, proposing a toast to Fidelis while glasses were still full. This was followed by a vote of thanks to retiring members Lin Slaughter and Eve Denegri. Sadly, Lin was unable to attend and receive her farewell gift, a beautiful rose. Liz then reviewed the past year’s activities and Treasurer, Carole Burne, reported on the current state of finances. Publicity and the forthcoming programme was considered Gillian Grinham by Jan Devey who has rounded up a wide Stately As A Galleon variety of speakers for 2019/20. Once the formalities had been dispensed with, Helen Golland and her daughter Charlotte, of Angel Delights’ fame, served a delicious summer buffet. The after - dinner speaker, Gillian Grinham, joined the Committee for supper before performing an entertaining and convincing “Tribute to Joyce Grenfell”. Familiar pieces like Old Tyme Dancing (Stately as a Galleon) and Nursery School were remembered fondly and very much enjoyed. The forthcoming club year will be the group’s 15th . Cakes: Several Fidelis’ ladies baked for the Hadleigh Hidden Gardens event. Refreshment organiser and club member, Louise Chambury, took the opportunity at the AGM to thank the ladies and report that their efforts had helped raise well over £100.00 for the St Mary’s Church refurbishment fund. Forget Me Nots Initiative: Working with the Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre members are busy knitting bright blue Forget Me Nots. These will form part of a larger future display, on the railings at the High Street Car Park, for Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance (HDDA). JD
Hadleigh Nursing Home turned National Carers Week into a celebration for both staff and residents Residents at the Kingsley Healthcare run home in Friars Road were keen to show their appreciation of the care they receive and made up pots and bags of sweets to present to members of staff. And on the Friday, home manager Tracey Burt treated all the staff and residents to a fabulous pamper day. Tracey said: “Our staff do an amazing job and Carers Week was a great way to show appreciation for their efforts. Suffolk-Based Care Homes Group ensures it is a bright year for Butterflies across East Anglia One of the sponsors of this year’s Flight for Youth campaign, Kingsley Healthcare, has taken their support to a whole new level, with residents at all 30 of its homes, including Hadleigh Nursing Home, in Hadleigh, painting ceramic butterflies to help celebrate this very special year for The Benjamin Foundation. 2019 marks the 25th anniversary since the charity was established to help people across Norfolk and Suffolk deal with some of the challenges that life throws at them. Whether it’s the prevention of youth homelessness, helping families to build stronger relationships or providing positive activities for young people with limited opportunities in life, their work brings hope, opportunity, stability and independence to the people it supports. As part of the celebrations to observe this milestone The Benjamin Foundation is busy creating a high-profile, visually appealing art installations called Flight for Youth which will feature up to 25,000 glazed pottery butterflies glazed in the charity’s four distinct colours – pink, purple, orange or red. The public are being invited to purchase a butterfly but before taking receipt of their commemorative piece the butterflies are being used to create two dramatic installations, at The Assembly House and Holkham Hall. In addition, the public are being invited to buy a plain butterfly and decorate it themselves; an idea Kingsley Healthcare has embraced. Tracey Burt, manager of Hadleigh Nursing Home, in Friars Road, said: “It’s been a really fun art project for our residents. “We have been decorating our garden with the brightly coloured butterflies before they are sent off for the art project.” The Suffolk based company is also celebrating a very special milestone year in 2019 and, as such, Kingsley has agreed a major sponsorship deal with The Benjamin Foundation to mark its 20th anniversary year. As well as supporting the art project, Kingsley’s CEO Daya Thayan has made a significant donation to the charity’s £100,000 appeal. As if this wasn’t enough, staff at its care homes and head office – Kingsley House in Lowestoft – will also be organising fundraising events for The Benjamin Foundation throughout the year. Mr Thayan said: “Kingsley started in East Anglia when we bought our first care home in Lowestoft so we thought it was fitting to support a local charity in our anniversary year. We are delighted to be supporting the Benjamin Foundation; we see in it the same values and a similar vision to our own charity, the Lotus Foundation.” Colin Lang MBE, Special Projects Manager who has created the appeal explains: “When planning how to mark our anniversary we decided that it must be something that anyone could be a part of and we couldn’t be more thrilled to see the residents at Kingsley Healthcare getting so involved. ‘The Miss Lesley's School of Performing Arts Story' With over 35 years of experience as both a professional performer and qualified teacher Miss Lesley has brought her own style of teaching performing arts to rural Suffolk. Her first school opened in Bildeston in May 2011, and her second in Boxford in May 2013, and the schools have gone from strength to strength with many talented students already working in the performing arts industry. Lesley started her theatrical training at the age of just 4 and at 11 years old won a scholarship to attend 'The Italia Conti Stage School' in London, where she trained in all aspects of musical theatre till she was 18 and graduated as a qualified teacher in modern dance and tap, as well as gaining a diploma in Performing Arts. She was trained by the best teachers in ballet, tap, singing, drama and musical theatre. During her successful ‘show business’ career as an actress, dancer and TV presenter, Lesley taught at the main 'Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts' in London and also ran several of her own associate Italia Conti part time schools too, and this is where her love of teaching began! She moved to Suffolk in 2009 and is now very proud to run two successful branches of her school, along with her fantastic professional team of teachers, who are also fully qualified with vast knowledge and experience of Performing Arts and have had successful professional careers in ‘show business’ working in West End Shows, TV and touring Theatre Shows. MLSPA classes are taught in a friendly and enjoyable environment whilst giving students a chance to get an all round training, gain confidence through dance and musical theatre but most of all to have FUN! Hadleigh Community Choir The forecast wasn’t good when we sang at Somersham Wheelie Fun Day in May but we were under cover and the only person risking a drenching was our Musical Director, Sarah Gallop, undaunted as ever! We even tempted fate by including Skyfall from the Bond film, but it didn’t rain and the crowds even got some sunshine. Singing out doors is fun but very different because the sound gets carried off across the fields instead of reverberating as it does indoors, so some rabbits and birds round Somersham must have been puzzled with the unexpected concert. Our big summer concert is Movie Magic on 13 July at 7.30 at the United Reformed Church (URC) in Hadleigh when we’ll be singing film tunes such as Mrs Robinson, Shadowland, a James Bond medley and Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire. I know you want to ask so I’ll tell you - Jai Ho means ‘Let there be victory’ in Hindi and if you’ve seen the film it is a great rousing song. Tickets are available from Keith Avis and The Idler. We’ll also be singing again at St Andrew’s Church, Layham at 7.30 on 27 July as a charity event for the church. Hadleigh’s 5th Annual Cycling Sportive Sunday 15th September Hadleigh Cycling Club will be running the fifth annual Gayford Flyer on Sunday, 15th September 2019. The Gayford Flyer is a non-competitive cycle sportive. There are two signed rides of 62 miles (100km) and 31 miles (50km). Full details and the story of Oswald Gayford can be found at www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk Entry is via the British Cycling website (www.britishcycling.org.uk) and the last day is Sunday, 8th September. There is no entry on the day. Riders pay £12.50 to enter and helmets are compulsory. “Last year’s sportive was fantastic”, said Mike Motteram, Chairman of Hadleigh Cycling Club. “Most of the riders and their families stayed around and enjoyed refreshments and live music at The George.” British Cycling said that the Flyer “was a super event - well thought through, well executed and very enjoyable to be part of.” One of the entrants emailed afterwards,”Completed the Spitfire route. Thought it was one of the best sportives I've done, friendly marshals, riders, superb route and great atmosphere, mind you the weather couldn't have been better. I'll be signing up next year.” Our Cycling Club is anxious to offer the broadest range of opportunities for local folk to enjoy cycling. We want to attract the “super fit” and the “less than super fit”. During the summer we have rides on Mondays, Fridays, some Saturdays and Sunday. Why not try our Sunday morning social rides from the George starting at 8am, with a guaranteed café stop, weather permitting. Adults and “capable children accompanied by an adult” are all welcome. A Guide to Natural Feeding: Part 2 Give a dog a bone In the wild up to a third of a dog’s nutrition may come from bones. Bones keep teeth and gums clean and exercise their upper bodies and jaw. Providing the bones are RAW (cooked bones can splinter), they are safe for dogs to eat. It is easy to understand why the dog wants the meat and marrow, but what makes the bone itself so desirable? Bones contain a huge number of nutrients that are vital to your dog’s health. These include: • minerals, including calcium, magnesium and phosphorous • protein-containing essential amino acids, including lysine • essential fatty acids • fat-soluble vitamins (A, D and E) • blood-forming nutrients (these are in the marrow), including copper and iron. Meaty bones are nature’s toothbrushes. They keep your dog’s teeth clean and gums healthy. Plaque can’t build up and decay is prevented. As a result your dog shouldn’t develop any of the nasty oral diseases to which many of those on processed food are prone. It has been proven that dogs with healthy teeth live longer. It will also mean he or she has sweeter breath. Two further benefits of giving your dog raw meaty bones should be mentioned: 1 - They provide your dog with exercise, strengthening their jaws and upper body, and 2 - They keep your dog occupied. Dogs that have a bone to chew are happier and calmer. What is wrong with processed dog food? It doesn’t matter which brand of processed dog food you use or how much it costs, it is never going to be as good for your dog as raw, fresh meat, bone and vegetable. The key problems are: • It is cooked. Cooking destroys the vast majority of the nutritional value of the food from a dog’s perspective and makes it exceedingly difficult to digest. • It can contain inappropriate and damaging chemicals (binders, colouring, preservatives and other additives). • The quality of the ingredients is usually poor. Even expensive processed dog food often has very low-quality ingredients. That generally means animal by-products, derivatives and low-quality grain. • Most dog foods contain a high percentage of grain (including rice), which is unsuitable for the canine digestive system and is one of the main causes of skin allergies, diabetes and flatulence. • It generally fails to clean the dog’s teeth and gums, allowing plaque to build up. This gives rise to periodontal disease and worse. Dog waste! Natural feeders talk a lot about dog waste. The waste of a raw fed dog is usually much firmer, smaller, less smelly and generally easier to pick up as a result. The reason why is simple: because the dog hasn’t eaten anything it cannot process or the body cannot use, there is very little wasted, resulting in very little waste! One of the main reasons why dogs fed on processed food produce so much waste matter is because of the grain. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk It is hard to think of a more positive experience as an MP than visiting one of the 39 primary schools in my constituency to talk about the future with my youngest constituents. There is usually one dominant subject of conversation - and it’s not Britain’s departure from the European Union. No, the subject primary pupils are keenest to chat about is the environment. In fact, at the time of writing my last two primary school visits – to Glemsford and Pot Kiln (Great Cornard) – were both dominated by discussions on litter, dealing with plastic waste and climate change. But if we can be confident that our future will be in safe hands, what about the present? Readers will rightly argue that the ‘climate emergency’ requires action today, or the next generation may find it is too late on the scene to deal with its consequences. Fortunately, though there is much more progress to be made, there is a great deal to celebrate. Earlier this month the country went for two full weeks without burning any coal for wholesale energy production. This was the first time a fortnight has passed without any emissions from our most polluting power source since the industrial revolution. It is particularly significant to reflect that this milestone was passed within weeks of the ‘Extinction Rebellion’ protests. At the heart of this shift away from CO2 belching coal-power has been a huge acceleration in the amount of electricity we generate from renewable sources. Renewables generated close to 40% of the UK’s electricity in the final quarter of 2018, up from barely 6% in 2010. We should be proud of delivering in practice the shift away from polluting energy that politicians on all sides want to see. Perhaps most significantly, the Government recently committed to ‘net zero’ CO2 emissions by 2050. This is hugely ambitious and will require unprecedented change in every aspect of our daily life. Nevertheless, if achieved it means that when our primary school children reach the age I am today Britain we will have delivered for them a healthier, cleaner, greener and more confident future.

Music We had an exciting start after the half term break with 135 children from Key Stage 2 taking part in our Summer Music Concert. There were two evening performances with a variety of musical instruments including woodwind instruments, two large recorder groups, a ukulele orchestra, a hand bell group and even a French Horn. There were also several talented vocal and instrumental soloists. The concert finished with our large choir of 90 children singing a variety of songs including those performed in March at Snape Maltings. We are very proud of all the children for their hard work and dedication leading up to their performances. We would also like to thank the audience for their generous donations towards our musical instrument fund. Gymnastics Our school was successful recently in getting two teams (one in Key Stage 1 and one in Key Stage 2) to the Key Steps Gymnastic County Final at Gainsborough Sports Centre. Both teams did really well with our KS2 team missing out on a place in the next round. The KS1 team with pupils from Year 1 and 2 were very successful and came first, they are now off to Huntingdon on 16th July for the Regional Finals. Well done everyone. Sport On Friday 7th June 2019, the children in Nursery took part in their own fun sports day. Some of the activities were the obstacle race, the pancake race, the space hopper race and lots of sprint races. In true Nursery fashion, the event concluded with a mummies and daddies race. Much fun was had by all the children, parents, staff and not forgetting PE Penguin!

Year 7 Student Leadership Conference On Friday 24th May our twelve recently appointed Year 7 Transition Coaches went to The University of Suffolk to a Student Leadership Conference held for seven local schools. The day included a welcome speech, a communication activity for students from different schools to get to know each other and a range of workshops designed to support the development of leadership skills. Our student Abigail Woodend said: ‘The day at The University of Suffolk was brilliant. Throughout the day there were activities teaching you how to be a good responsible leader. It was a great idea to put everyone with people that they had never met before, so that we build confidence. The first activity for some of us was about empathy; this was about putting yourself in someone else’s shoes and seeing how they feel. It was a really fun idea; great for getting to know each other! The other activities included working on cooperation, collaboration and constructive criticism. It was a brilliant day and we also got free food which was delicious! We really enjoyed our day learning about being a good responsible leader.’ The Transition Coaches will continue to develop these skills as they undertake their roles with the Year 6 primary students moving up to high school.
German Exchange to Mannheim In May, nine students seized the opportunity of taking part in a cultural exchange and spent a week staying with a German family in Mannheim. The group of Year 9 and 10 students were accompanied by Ms Kitchingham and Miss Moore. They travelled by plane to Stuttgart and then by bus to Mannheim. On arrival, they were met by their host families and then went their separate ways to their new homes for the week. The following day they were welcomed to ‘Geschwister Scholl Gymnasium’ school where the students had prepared a welcome poster. After meeting the headteacher, the students went into some English and Science lessons and then spent the afternoon at the beautiful Luisenpark. Students spent the weekend with their host families and were able to take part in lots of activities including visiting Heidelberg, summer tobogganing, neon crazy golf, visiting beautiful castles, horse-riding, shopping, BBQs and much more. The rest of the week flew by with visits to Frankfurt Zoo and the Main Tower, Tübingen and the Ritter Sport chocolate factory. Our students really got to experience the life of a German teenager; attending school, trying different food and drink and speaking German. We are very much looking forward to welcoming the German group back to visit us on 5th July.
Fundraising A fundraising cake sale was held at the Spring Showcase to raise money and awareness about the harmful production of palm oil. All of the cakes and cupcakes were made without using palm oil. The fundraiser was organized by Lola Hinton-Barnett and Megan Russell in Year 9 who are concerned about the plight of the orangutans and their loss of habitat. £110 was raised and will be donated to Greenpeace who campaign for the protection of orangutans and other global environmental problems.

Parkside pre-school have been up to lots this month! We had a very successful Attenbourgh Awareness week where we completed lots of eco friendly activities. We have planted lots more fruits, veg and salads for the children to look after and then enjoy for their lunches and snacks. We have also pledged to use biodegradable wipes, nappy bags and gloves within the setting. This is something we are very proud to offer. That is a MINIMUM saving of.....100 gloves a week; 200 wipes a week; 50 nappy bags a week...Over term time that's a WHOPPING 3800 gloves, 7600 wipes and 1900 nappy bags. We have been very busy with lots of new exciting activities as we begin to adopt the curiosity approach to the childrens learning. We at Parkside have always offered a child led, free flow approach to learning and we are building on this to keep current and exemplary in our offering of early education. Is it really the summer term? The big tree on our school field has seen more use as an emergency umbrella than as a sunshade! Of course, the weather will brighten up in time for Sports’ Day and the summer fete. Meanwhile, everyone’s been very busy. Years 5 and 6 are in the middle of learning lines and songs, prop and costume making, and lighting and stage management techniques for their joint production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. It promises to be a fantastic show! Year 4 enjoyed their trip to Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich, which reinforced their topic work on the Victorians. They looked at the contrast in the lives of rich and poor Victorians. During the morning, they explored the lives of the servants, trying out various jobs, such as being a butler, a maid and a cook. Also, they investigated the equipment people used for their jobs. However, in the afternoon, the children found out about what it would have been like to be the rich family living in the mansion. They looked at toys and inventions, matching modern items to their Victorian equivalents. The children were really interested in learning about deportment and they practised walking while balancing books on their heads and used backboards to help them sit up straight. Many thanks to everyone at Christchurch Mansion for a fabulous experience! Back in class, the Year 4 children have been studying the digestive system in science and took part with great enthusiasm in a digestion experiment to demonstrate how the digestive process works, using tights, gravy browning, white bread, strawberry jam, butter and coca cola! Children from Year 5 participated in a Multi-Skills Sports Festival at Hadleigh High School. They enjoyed playing in mixed teams with children from other schools. There were a range of sporting activities, including hurdles and egg and spoon, to help the children practise various skills, such as balancing. The children really enjoyed the session! Many thanks to all the people at Hadleigh High School who helped the children. It was great to see the children in year 1 so engaged with the Castle Hedingham experience, participating in all the role play situations and showing off their knowledge. Rain didn’t spoil the day – in fact, it meant they could eat their lunch in the Great Hall, rather than outside on the grass like the peasants! Whole school activities have included outdoor maths – year 3, for example, made sundials in a cross-curricular link to their science topic on light, and year 5 linked maths and PE by measuring distances and times in various sports events on the field. During our Careers Day, we were pleased to welcome a banker, a film director, an IT technician, and a lifeguard and swimming teacher to school, who talked to the children about their career path and work experience. Collective Worship - The Christian value we are focussing on this half term is Respect: Sue Wells, Jackie Cork and Brian Hempstead have all led assemblies to help the children understand how to put this into practice. Other visitors to our assemblies have included Sian Bendall from Hollow Trees Farm, who talked about the harvesting of crops and how they’re used, One Life Suffolk who spoke about the importance of good sleeping habits, and Mrs Sparkes, one of our parents, introduced the children to the concept of mindfulness.

Our speaker in June was David Webb, whose talk was about, ‘Life as a Hi De Hi’ Yellow Coat.However, his talk was as much about the varied career, (interspersed with some good jokes and film clips) that led him to that point. Brought up in Mistley, he joined the Ipswich Operatic & Drama Society where he remembered playing in, ‘West Side Story’, ‘Oklahoma’ and the romantic lead in, ‘South Pacific’. In 1967 he and his twin brother, David turned professional and became a singing duo called, The Webb Twins. They did summer shows and toured the working men's clubs in the North. They did several weeks of professional cabaret with a clever comedian called Michael Barrymore! A number of pantomimes followed including, ‘Aladdin’ with the late Roy Castle as the star. Photo Shoots were another venture, one of which was with a young Joanna Lumley and they were all friends with someone they knew as, ‘Quiet Gordon’ who later was known as STING! They did T.V. commercials and had slots on several shows, such as, ‘The Harry Secombe Show’, ‘Harry Worth’, ‘The Dick Emery Show’ and others. While doing T.V. they heard that Evan King had written a Sit Com set in a holiday camp and they were looking for the cast. The Webb Twins became Yellow Coats! Warners at Dovercourt became MAPLINS. Among the cast were Paul Shane, Ruth Maddoc and Sue Pollard. As well as the T.V. series, the cast of ‘Hi De Hi’ was included in some live shows. They did Bournemouth in 1983, The Royal Variety Show in 1984 when the compare was Gene Kelly. They played the Opera House in Blackpool and afterwards the cast jointly switched on the Illuminations. They had a guest appearance on, ‘Jim'll Fix It’ and Terry Wogan's ‘Children in Need’ when they raised money for it. Paul Shane,Sue Pollard and Ruth maddoc were each the subject of, ‘This is Your Life’. ‘HI De HI’ won a BAFTA award. From 1979 to1987, it ran for 8 years and 58 episodes watched by 21,000,000 people per night. Afterwards the Webb Twins split up. Tony taught the classical guitar and David makes documentaries. What a varied career they had and such an entertaining evening. Our W.I. are having our annual garden Party on Monday, 1st July and we will meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month, as usual. Above the Parapet County Council Report - Cllr Mick Fraser Suffolk Rockets Locality Budget Grant I was delighted to help grant fund new netball goalposts equipment for our Suffolk Rockets Netball Team. These replace older posts which were unsafe and no longer fit for purpose. I am incredibly impressed by the progress that the teams have made in attracting new members of all abilities and ages, and believe it vital to encourage physical activity and wellbeing for all our residents. Also, I am most keen to assist with the development of our younger people through organized groups and teams such as the Rockets. This is a good example of how Locality Budget is used to prime start projects or, as shown in this case, procure equipment or tangible items which will have continual and lasting use. Hadleigh Traffic Management Working Group (HTMWG) On Tuesday 4th June the HTWG hosted both our local Suffolk Highways Community Engineer, Paul Gant, and Cllr Mary Evans, the Cabinet member for Highways and Suffolk County Council Deputy Leader. The topics discussed for action, included: Benton Street The traffic management options produced for me by Suffolk Highways, which could be trialled to improve footpath safety, were shown and described to Cllr Evans. A resident of BS gave a report on the results of a pedestrian safety survey she had conducted. One factor showed that inconsiderate parking on double-yellow lines has a significant impact on the traffic flow, and contributes greatly to vehicle incursions on pavements. This issue should be addressed next year with the decriminalizing of parking in Suffolk and its enforcement responsibility passing to the District Council. Pedestrian safety and crossing points – The state of the town’s pavements

and lack of adequate crossing points, particularly for the disabled, was raised. I will be showing all the areas of concern identified to our Community Engineer so that they might be addressed to improve our footpaths. A1071/Aldham Mill Hill Junction Speed safety along the by-pass and the increase in HGV traffic from the quarry were highlighted as being increasingly hazardous at this junction. Various measures such as roundabouts and speed restrictions were debated. High St/Magdalen Rd one-way system As part of the town’s ‘Vision for Prosperity’, the current design and traffic management of the High St should be considered for change. Felixstowe’s main shopping street, Hamilton Rd, was shown as an example of what changes could be carried to enhance the visitor experience to the town. Community Self Help Scheme I hope to encourage the Town Council to sign up to this scheme as there are established volunteer organizations in the town that might be able and willing to carry out minor highways maintenance tasks. (More below) Suffolk Highways Community Self-Help Scheme is designed to support and empower town and parish councils to carry out minor maintenance tasks in their area. This scheme allows SCC to work with town and parish councils who have a great sense of community spirit and pride. It will empower them to undertake minor maintenance tasks on their public spaces about which they care so deeply. Highways has committed £100k to the scheme in its first year and this investment will help fund training; personal protective; and any necessary tools. The types of works that some town and parish councils are keen to undertake include: sign cleaning; fingerpost cleaning/painting/repair; tree/hedge pruning/branch removal; grass verge cutting; and weed removal. Towns and parishes will be able to carry out these tasks through one or more of the following four options: buying in services from contractors; using their own trained employee(s); using volunteers to undertake work; buying additional services from Suffolk Highways. Suffolk County Council’s Children’s Services graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted On 21st May, it was announced that Ofsted inspectors have awarded Children’s Services at Suffolk County Council the top grade of ‘Outstanding' following their visit in April 2019. Only eight other Local Authorities, out of 152, have been judged to be ‘Outstanding’ overall. Ofsted’s inspection report stated that, Services for children are of an exceptionally high standard. They are child-focused and make a positive difference to children’s lives. Inspectors were impressed with improvements made across the service since it was rated ‘Good’ in 2015. The report commended the stable and aspirational leadership, strong political and financial support that had created sustainable high-quality services. Inspectors also praised the staff for the impressive work they are doing with children and young people. The way that they are doing it is making a real difference to young lives. They also praised the ethos within the council’s children’s services, saying the authority consistently demonstrates its commitment to supporting parents to bring up their children safely and successfully. This is an amazing and well-deserved achievement and everyone who delivers outstanding services to support young people in Suffolk a should be proud. We’ve been competition crazy since the Easter break. Five children competed at the Club grade 5 competition at Pipers Vale. They all passed and Brecon Bamsey did extremely well to move on to the Regional final. Our seven qualifiers Y M NASTIC from the County general gymnastics competition in March competed in their respective Regional rounds and all performed well.

Our new “Baby stars” class has started for 18 months - 3 year olds. Playstation Pre-School Wow, what a busy Summer term we have had. Sports week was fantastic and the children really enjoyed watching the nursery in their sports day races and having a PE lesson with Mr Peters. We raised some much-needed funds with our stalls at the school fete and are looking forward to having fun at Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics Club later this month. A Fundraiser for Jude... My son Jude who is 16 months old has been recently been diagnosed with a very rare muscle disease called Nemaline Rod Myopathy and needs constant physio for his mobility and to help his chest in the colder months to stop infection, the physio on the NHS can only come every 6 weeks due to goverment funding so we have to go private to give Jude the best start in life. He was admitted a couple of times to hospital last year with breathing issues each time being put on air flow and having a feeding tube but in January this year whilst being in Ipswich Hospital with Jude having Bronchiolitis, he unfortunately caught the flu which very quickly turned into pneumonia and his body wasnt fighting it like it should. Jude was having 70% help with breathing so the doctors decided to put him in a coma to give his body a rest, so he was moved by the Cats Team to PICU in Addenbrookes where he stayed for a month. So it is very important to us to raise a good amount to get him to those milestones as most people with Nemaline Rod Myopathy find it difficult to walk. Jude at the minute is only just started to roll over, he cannot lift his head whilst on his front, cannot crawl, sit up or walk/stand. Why have massage during Pregnancy? Your body will be going through some major changes during your pregnancy and massage can be used to support these. It can be helpful with issues such as back ache and pain, stiffness in the neck and shoulders, leg cramps, swollen feet and ankles, general areas of muscle tension, as well as supporting you emotionally by aiding relaxation. Massage is only carried out in the second and third Trimester and with agreement from your midwife. The Treatment The session will begin with a chat about your pregnancy and completion of a thorough consultation form covering your medical history. You will need to have discussed massage with your midwife, obstetrician or GP and have the all clear from them to proceed with the treatment. The actual treatment is like a normal Swedish massage, but positions are adapted to allow for your changing shape. Most of the treatment will be carried out in side lying, supported with pillows to enable you to feel entirely relaxed and at ease. Recipe for Success by Sarah Thompson I recently had the pleasure and privilege of working in the massive tomato plant in Bramford. I use both words deliberately, because although I had to admit defeat in the end (the sheer physicality of harvesting potentially delicate vegetables at speed is not easy) I was grateful to be given the opportunity to give it a go. It was also lovely to see row upon row of tomatoes on vines, and to work in such an amazing place with a wide variety of international colleagues. So my recipe this month is in recognition of the humble tomato, and is dedicated with grateful thanks to Helen from Adnams, for suggesting tomato harvesting in the first place, and to my incredibly kind and supportive boss, Anelia, who gave me the courage and determination to plough on when my confidence dipped. Such patience! Authentic Gazpacho Total Time: 15 Mins Prep Time: 15 Mins Cook Time: 0 Mins Ingredients: 2 llbs ripe tomatoes, halved and cored, 1 small cucumber, peeled and seeded, 1 medium green bell pepper, cored, ½ small red onion, peeled, 2 small garlic cloves (or 1 large clove), peeled, 3 tablespoons olive oil, 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar, 1 teaspoon fine sea salt, ½ teaspoon freshlycracked black pepper, ½ teaspoon ground cumin, 1 thick slice of white bread, soaked with crusts removed (see below). Optional garnishes: chopped fresh herbs,croutons, a drizzle of olive oil, or any leftover chopped gazpacho ingredients. Method 1. Combine all ingredients together in a blender or food processor. Puree for 1 minute, or until the soup reaches your desired consistency. 2. Taste and season with extra salt, pepper and/or cumin if needed. 3. Refrigerate in a sealed container for 4 hours, or until completely chilled. 4. Serve cold, topped with optional garnishes.

Hurrah! It’s our Open Day and Fun Dog Show on the 28th July when old friends and new join us for an afternoon of fun, food and furries! Stalls, games, gifts, pet supplies, BBQ, refreshments, homemade cake, ice cream and music from the Hadleigh Ukulele Group. Pooches can try the Scurry or enter many classes including SESAW Dog of the Year for those homed by us. Most important of all, visitors can meet the animals including Sky, a Whippet/Lurcher and her companion Biscuit, a Chihuahua/Jack Russell cross. This inseparable pair arrived in January. Biscuit is not keen on other dogs but both are very friendly and love a fuss. They will stay with us until the right person comes along. Could it be you? The paw prints in the wet cement incident is forgotten, in fact I suspect Mum quite liked a four-footed autograph in the new path. Now she is mystified over the sudden appearance of her missing spectacles at her feet on the kitchen floor, having search high and low for two weeks! All I can say is, don’t look at me, just because Chihuahuas have a reputation for stashing trinkets! It’s cold and wet but I must pop outside to thank the friendly team of volunteers from Waitrose. They spent two days sprucing up the Sanctuary ready for our big day. Please visit us on the 28th, gate opens at midday. We will be ready to greet you, whatever the weather. Dear Sir, Driving along the A1071, the Hadleigh bypass, I noticed a large white sign almost obstructed by branches and greenery from trees at the side of the road. The directions were almost impossible to read. Upon investigation by my walking along the side of the road having parked on the industrial estate and armed with a handsaw I carried out some severe pruning. In an hour or two the sign revealed the way to the domestic waste tip and also a side road to Elmsett. l will spend more time pruning shortly so that the sign can clearly be observed by drivers travelling westward along the A1071 from at least 1000 meters distance. Whatfield Players Farewell Party
The Players have been ‘on stage’ for over 24 years. At first they were frequently, ‘on the road’, helping villages, local churches and clubs to raise funds as well as ‘treading the boards’ in Whatfield Village Hall with Pantomimes, Musicals, Music Hall, Plays, Murder Mysteries, Harvest Horkey Shows, and entertainment for Christmas Parties. On Saturday 1st June, members, past and recent present were invited to a party to mark our farewell, and to recall memories together. As guests arrived, the words ‘it is a sad occasion’ were often heard. We hope that our audiences will remember us positively. We always attempted to stage our shows with a view to limiting costs, and making everything home grown where possible. In recent years the expertise of H.A.D.S members helped us tremendously on technical matters. During the party, a display of posters, production files, programmes, photos, costumes, and props, helped to jog memories, and of all the fun we’d had. Whatfield Community Council provided bar facilities and a Buffet Supper was supplied by Angel Delights. During the evening a rolling picture show, organised by David Dray was screened and guests Simon and Rebecca Welham entertained us with music for singing. Sad as it may be, we take pride in the amounts we have raised for local Suffolk Charities. Since our start in 1995 we have donated over £12,000. The committee take this opportunity to thank all our members, and audiences for their support, hoping that we have ‘done well’, and justified the hope placed in us by our founder members and joint past presidents, Mona Bruce and Robert James. Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday June 10th 2019: A change of plans in June meant that we met as usual in the town hall for a talk from Brian, one of our club members, on the subject of alpines. Brian has been interested in growing alpines since childhood and is a member of The South Suffolk Alpine Club. These beautiful plants can be found in many parts of the world and they usually, but not always, grow above the tree line. In his own garden Brian has tried to replicate the environments where these plants can be found by creating a layered rock formation, to give them the best possible growing conditions. I was pleased to discover that some of the choice examples he talked about could also be found in my own garden. I created an alpine tower at the beginning of the year, with pots of graduated sizes filled with gritty soil stacked one on top of the other which helps with good drainage. I got the idea from an article in the RHS magazine, and they seem to be doing well. Brian showed us lovely examples of miniature daffodils, dianthus, aquilegias, orchids and many more. All little gems of perfection and all with the most vibrant colours - what a treat! Saturday June 10th saw a very soggy and windy start to The Hadleigh Hidden Gardens event, during which the wind blew over a huge gazebo and we lost our umbrella - which we had brought to protect us from the sun! However a lot of keen gardeners braved the weather and we made the best of it and had a very enjoyable day. We were kept busy at our stall at Toppesfield Mill House and as well as giving visitors information about the club we were also able to make a donation to the Friends of St Mary's, so a great success all round. Monday July 8th 2019: Some of you may remember the club's version of the popular radio programme Gardener's Question Time which we held a few years ago. Back then we had three very entertaining speakers from Radio Suffolk, and one of them - Karen Kenny - is returning this month to give a talk on the theme of 'Companion Planting'. The meeting starts at 7.30pm in Hadleigh Town Hall. The entrance is £4 for visitors and £2 for members to include refreshments, there will be a raffle and plants for sale. Down to Earth ...with Dave Not a weekend goes by without an open garden event of some sort being publicised, every village in the area has some sort of event trying to get us to visit their numerous and well loved gardens. Boxford, Shelley, Chelsworth, Flowton and Hadleigh, to name a few, were all asking us to visit them. This year due to some problems with driving, my efforts were confined to just one garden, this was Toppesfield Mill House garden which was taking part in the Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh event. The garden club was very generously given some space to set up a plant stall in this lovely garden and for several weeks the club had been collecting plants to sell. On the day it was as wet and windy as possible, but we struggled on and were rewarded by meeting some cheerful stalwart gardeners not put off by a bit of rain. At the end of the day nearly all of the donated plants had been sold and, with luck, we could well do it again next year. At home in the garden all of the numerous pots have saucers under them, this is fine until we have loads of rain, then what seemed a good idea to save on watering becomes a bit of a nuisance as no plant likes sitting in water, so all saucers have to be emptied. One trick I use is to blow the water away using an electric leaf blower, this is very handy where, for instance, the large and very heavy hostas in pots are concerned. The slugs and snails are having a bit of a holiday this year as my nightly patrol with a torch is on hold until I get my eyes properly sorted. Though, saying that, there does not seem to be much damage being done, this is possibly due to the numerous birds we attract to the garden and a very large toad on patrol recently. To tell the difference between a frog and a toad frogs hop and toads walk. Everything is growing at a pace now and it is surprising how quickly a side shoot on a cordon grown tomato plant can grow and try to take over the plant, regular pinching out of any side shoot is needed. After about five trusses have formed then the top of the main stem should be stopped as any fruits formed above this will not ripen, the bush plants grown in the basket are just left to tumble. After the first fruits have formed regular feeding with a tomato feed is advised, and never let the compost dry out. The fuchsia gall mite that was showing on the over wintered standard plants seems to have been beaten and they are putting on a good show of foliage and flowers. Some of them are like old friends and it would be very sad to lose them. We do have replacements but it will take several years for them to reach maturity. That's all for this time, Dave

Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group Getting hay fever help and advice from the pharmacist Patients who suffer from hay fever are being encouraged to visit their local pharmacy for help and advice. With an estimated one in five suffering from hay fever, the next few months could be an uncomfortable time, with symptoms including a runny, itchy or blocked nose, sneezing and itchy, red and watery eyes. You can help protect yourself from hay fever symptoms by wearing wraparound sunglasses, whilst showering and changing your clothes after being outdoors helps prevent pollen spreading around your home. Staying indoors when the pollen count is high and smearing a small amount of Vaseline inside your nose helps to prevent pollen settling on the inside of your nose. One of the best ways to control hay fever is with antihistamines, which you can buy without prescription. Start taking them now so they can get into your system. Taking antihistamines regularly is more effective than taking them only when your symptoms are bad. Eye drops or nasal sprays can also be purchased from your local pharmacy or supermarket. Make your pharmacy the first place you go for help and advice with hay fever. You don’t need an appointment to speak with the pharmacist and you’ll be saving yourself time, freeing up GP appointments for people with more urgent needs. Relatives visiting or students coming home for the holidays? Before all the bags are packed, please ensure your guests check their prescription medication and some just-in-case medications before they leave home. They needn’t prepare for every illness imaginable, just a small bag with the most necessary pills and medicine. It’s easy enough to pick up a domestic remedy over the counter, but some medicines may be limited to prescription only. The same goes for allergy meds and asthma remedies, pack them too! If your guests need to travel with prescription medication, suggest using a pill organizer. Keeping the medicine they need well stocked and ready means they won’t interrupt their holiday with a trip to the doctor or the pharmacy. Guidance for patients travelling abroad for three months or less: • Pre-existing condition Take with you sufficient medication to cover the journey and to allow you to obtain medical attention abroad. A 28 day prescription is sufficient. If additional medication is required, you are advised to register with a local doctor once abroad. A prescription cannot be issued for patients who are already abroad. • Just-in-case Treatments GPs may not prescribe on the NHS any medication which is requested solely in anticipation of the onset of an ailment whilst outside the UK, but for which treatment is not required at the time of prescribing (e.g. travel sickness, altitude sickness, antibiotics or rehydration sachets for diarrhoea). • Taking controlled drugs abroad Patients travelling abroad with controlled drugs, irrespective of the duration of travel, are advised to carry a letter, issued by the prescribing doctor or drug worker. Travellers are advised to contact the embassy, consulate or high commission of the country of destination (or any country through which they may travel) regarding the legal status and local policy on the importation of controlled drugs. • Malaria prophylaxis Patients are advised to purchase prophylaxis over the counter where possible. GPs will NOT prescribe medicines to prevent malaria on the NHS.

You may have heard about the idea of a Good Neighbour scheme in Hadleigh; a small group of us have been establishing whether there is a need - and whether there are volunteers to support it. The responses from the questionnaires which were distributed have shown that many local residents would benefit from such a scheme. Some would like help with shopping, minor household repairs or a one-off garden tidy, form-filling, lifts and friendship/company. And, just as important, there are a good number of potential Good Neighbour volunteers if we can get the scheme up and running! Sally Connick, the GNS Scheme development officer at Community Action Suffolk, has been advising the group, who now number 6, all of whom will be on the committee, with one offering to be the Secretary. However, essential before the Scheme can go forward is the appointment of a Chairman and Treasurer. When these officers are in place, we can set about finding the startup funding of about £600 for insurance, DBS checks, a mobile phone and training. We are hopeful that local funding can be found, but we cannot proceed until we have the other two officers in place. Hadleigh Steering Group Monday 10 June 2019 All are welcome at the Steering Group meetings which re usually held on the second Monday of the month. It is an opportunity for you to share your views and concerns with other members of the community. The meetings are attended by members of the Town Council, local groups and organisations and a representative from the Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils. A summary of the meeting held on 10 June 2019 chaired, by Rickaby ShearlySanders:The Report of the meeting in May was approved. Guest Speaker – Peter Hall, Advisor, Sudbury & District Citizens Advice – “The Community Connector Scheme – Hadleigh”. Supported by Sudbury & District Citizens Advice. They are looking to employ a Community Connector. This service can be accessed by, inter alia, GPs, mental health and social care teams, housing services, the police and neighbourhood teams and, of course, self-referrals. This service will be run from a mobile “office” which will visit towns on specified dates offering drop in sessions. Information / appointments can be made by calling 01473 835 445. The scheme aims to connect individuals with social opportunities, activities, clubs, groups etc. to encourage improved mental and physical health and alleviate isolation and loneliness as well as deal with problems both great and small. Hadleigh Town Council A full council will be held on Thursday 20 June and since election, the council members have been busy engaging with the public, communicating regularly on social media and joining in many community activities. Babergh & Mid Suffolk District Council Clare Free reported on town visioning work. Following work in Sudbury last year, this is being rolled out to smaller market towns and there is a VISION for HADLEIGH meeting, to be led by Thinking Place, at the Dining Room in the Guildhall Complex at 4.30pm – 6pm and again at 6.30 – 8pm on Tuesday 25 June. It is concerned with understanding and developing what is considered important to a particular town. It is not part of The Neighbourhood Plan. Hadleigh In Bloom has, this year, some 70 baskets and planters. It is hoped to develop and expand this programme year on year. Hadleigh Hidden Gardens was the victim of exceptionally wet and windy weather but despite this, many gardens reported excellent numbers of visitors. Tidy Town / Community Gardeners The team have undertaken some street weeding. Jointly with Footpath Volunteers Queen Street has been weeded; businesses and residents have been asked to keep the small area outside their premises as weed free as possible. They plan to start a “Love Your Street” campaign Suffolk County Council is running a self-help scheme whereby volunteers will be registered, insured and trained to undertake local jobs which the councils can no longer deal with. Locally, requests for Street signs to be cleaned should be sent to ourtidytown@gmail.com. The state of the River Brett was discussed as the Tidy Town Team has recently removed some dangerous metal and glass on the river bank and intend to continue to do so. Agreed to ask a representative from the Environment Agency to come to speak at a future meeting so this topic can be fully discussed and issues understood. Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group The practice has commissioned a new website which, after review, is hoped to go live by end June. Text reminders of appointments started on 1 June and this has brought about a decline in missed appointments –there is still a long way to go. 50% of home visits are considered unnecessary by GPs. Ideas are requested for dealing with / improving this situation. The practice is pleased to have attracted three new nurses and new doctors, two of whom are partners. Hadleigh On Show Sat 5 October in the Guildhall Complex 10am – 4pm. Closing date for applications is 31 July. There is a Just Giving page as well as sponsorship forms. The knitted/crocheted forget-me-not brooches are still required and will be sold for the foreseeable future to raise further funds. • The TSB is running a coffee and cakes morning on Friday 14 June between 9am & 12 noon. • Sarah Thompson reported the Hadleigh Community Choir is holding their summer concert, Movie Magic, on Saturday 13 July at the URC. The DIY Deli Pastrami This highly flavoursome form of cured beef is generally associated with America but its origin stems from Romania. Typically, the cut of beef used is brisket, but we have chosen silverside as it is more forgiving if you don’t get the cooking quite right. The cure involves the use of sodium nitrite which is widely used to protect the meat from the effects of harmful bacteria in cured meat; it also fixes the red colouring matter in the cured meat to give it that attractive pink colouration. Some schools recommend the use of celery salt instead; this has a naturally produced amount of sodium nitrite, but there is no way of knowing how much; for this reason, we don’t subscribe to that “au naturelle” idealism. The synthesised product Prague powder is table salt with 6.25% sodium nitrite (Prague powder #1) or a long term version 6.25% sodium nitrite & 4% sodium nitrate; the latter breaks down very slowly to produce a trickle of nitrite for the protection of air-dried products (Prague powder #2) Shopping Look for a joint with a fairly flat profile; if you opt for brisket this comes as standard but it is quite normal to find a similar cut of silverside; you will need 1-2 kg. Essential equipment 1. A purpose built hot smoker equipped with a water bath 2. A charcoal starter funnel 3. A container ceramic, glass or food grade plastic that can be set aside for a week or so, just big enough to hold the meat without touching the sides and at least 50mm deeper than the height of the joint 4. A pointed knife with a keen (not serrated) edge 5. A pestle and mortar 6. A stainless steel container with a perforated lid for the wood chips 7. Scales: accurate to 0.1 gm &capable of weighing less than 1gm 8. A glass paperweight 9. A meat thermometer 10. A sharp carving knife or (ideally) meat slicer Ingredients based on 1 kg (trimmed weight) of beef; pro rata according to size For the cure Sea salt 100g, Prague powder #1 2.5g, Soft brown sugar 25g Ground coriander 6g, Freshly ground black pepper 10g Sweet paprika 4g, Garlic granules 1g, Water 0.5 litre, Star anise 1 For the surface dressing Coriander seed 5g, Black pepper 5g Garlic granules 1.5g, Smoked paprika 1.5g For the cooking Cherry or oak wood chips; 100g fresh sage. Method 1. Trim the meat of all excess fat and any sinew that might be on the surface; Weigh the trimmed joint to determine the amount of each ingredient in the cure; while the others are not critical the Prague powder is – 2.5 g per kilo. Don’t waste the fat; it will make perfectly good beef dripping next time your oven is on. 2. Dissolve the salt, sugar and Prague powder in the water, stirring vigorously; you might need to warm it a little to speed up the process; cool in the fridge to 4-5℃ 3. Mix the remaining 4 ground ingredients of the cure in the pestle and mortar 4. Place the meat on a board with both cut ends visible; using a vertical motion parallel to the grain pierce the meat until the point of the knife contacts the board, at one-inch intervals; turn over and repeat on the other side; this will ensure even penetration of the cure 5. Rub the dry ingredients of the cure into the meat 6. Place the meat into the selected container and add the (now cold) wet ingredients of the cure and the star anise; the meat will be slightly buoyant; weigh it down with the paperweight; if it is not covered add enough cold water to cover by ¼ inch 7. Cure in the fridge for 7-10 days depending on size, turning daily 8. Once cured remove the meat and rinse under cold running water to remove all traces of the cure from the surface; soak in cold water for 1 hour; remove and pat dry; meanwhile light the charcoal in the starter funnel & place your chosen wood chips (it will stand up to oak) in the container to soak for 5 minutes; when up to speed transfer the charcoal to the smoker, drain the wood chip container & place onto the hot coals 9. Introduce the water bath at the mezzanine level between the charcoal basket and the top grill rack; fill with boiling water to around 30 mm below the rim, adding the sage – no need to remove the leaves from the stalks 10. Add the top cylinder of the smoker & griddle rack 11. Adjust the air intake to achieve an operating temperature of 80℃ 12. Pat the meat dry with a kitchen towel; Grind the coriander seeds & pepper to achieve a coarse granular texture; mix with the garlic & paprika & rub into the surface of the meat 13. Smoke for around 4-6 hours at 80º; check at hourly intervals as you will need to recharge the smoke generator from time to time: check the temperature of the inside of the meat at the thickest point; you need to achieve an absolute minimum of 60℃ - 72℃ if you like it well done. 14. Remove the meat & allow to rest before placing in the fridge overnight. 15. Slice all of it very thinly at right angles to the grain, & wrap tightly in convenient packs using cling film, or ideally, vacuum pack it. Storage The product will keep in the fridge for several days; in its sliced form it will keep in the freezer for 6 months, provided it is tightly wrapped; loosely wrapped it will tend to dry out in the freezer. To serve Use it in sandwiches or with salad as a starter; 1 kg uncooked weight serves 12 as a starter.
News from Kersey School Squirrels (Reception) Squirrels are enjoying learning about plants and mini beasts. They have been busy planted seeds kindly donated by Thompson and Morgan. During the topic they have read The Enormous Turnip and then created their own story based on it, we’ve had the enormous carrot and even the enormous strawberry! They are very much looking forward to their trip to Bridges Farm to learn more about crops and animals. Squirrels outdoor area Recently we were extremely lucky to receive a Lottery grant of nearly £10,000 to update and improve our Early Years outdoor area, the work is now complete and the children are enjoying using the new play house, climbing frame and dig pit with pulley system. The whole area looks fantastic. Badgers (Years 3 and 4) In Badger's class we started this half term off with a movie themed day. All of the children came dressed as their favourite movie character and throughout the day we learnt about the Hollywood walk of fame and made our own trailers and movies using both the I Pads and laptops. During our Arts Festival this year we performed Happy on the recorders and sang the song 'Reach' by S Club 7. This linked to our topic of what we wanted to be when we grew up. We had a huge range of jobs in our class from gymnasts and miners to zoologist and international cake tasters! Owls (Years 5 and 6) Owls class have enjoyed a rather soggy start to their new topic on Water Worlds! We went to Flatford Mill to begin our topic- we investigated the water voles and learned a lot about them, their habitats and their prey. We hoped to see one (we were especially quiet too!) but no luck! This links rather well with our end of year play, which is The Wind In The Willows. We are already busy practising for this as well as continuing our usual learning. At Flatford, we also did some pond dipping- we found a variety of creatures including pond snails and beetle larvae. We had a soggy lunch under the trees by the lock and then wandered to Willy Lott's Cottage. We are focusing on John Constable as an artist this term and we enjoyed seeing the famous house. In Science, we are reviewing our learning of the Water Cycle and also finding out more about water habitats. Parish Council These are the main matters dealt with at the AGM of the Parish Council on 21 May 2019. • Election of Chairman and Officers It was agreed unanimously that Charlotte Britton be elected Chairman for 2019/20. She confirmed she was happy to accept the nomination and took the chair. It was further agreed that Michael Woods be elected Vice-Chairman; he accepted the nomination. Cllr Roberts proposed a vote of thanks to him; he had been Chairman for the past eight years. • Co-options The Clerk explained that, following the elections, councils with fewer members than seats had until 24 June to co-opt without giving formal notice and the potential for a by-election to be demanded. It was agreed that she should contact parishioners who had put themselves forward for co-option during 2018 to see if they were still interested. • District Council report The Chairman congratulated Councillor John Ward on his re-election as councillor for the new Brett Vale ward. Babergh had now reverted to ‘no overall control’ and Cllr Ward, who had support to remain as Leader, said he hoped to be able to put together a cross-party administration, effective from the Annual Council Meeting on 22 May. In response to a question, JW said Brexit would not affect the Local Plan or services generally; however, there could be an impact on housing and Babergh would be monitoring the situation closely. • County Council report Following an Ofsted inspection in April, Children’s Services had been rated ‘outstanding’, one of only 6 local authorities out of 152. Cllr Woods commented that he was pleased to see the search continuing for ‘Suffolk’s environmental superstars’, as part of the Creating the Greenest County Awards. The Chairman said she welcomed the initiative to recruit a network of Champions to help spread the message of support for those experiencing domestic abuse. • Speeding It was agreed that the Parish Plan working group would discuss this issue at its next meeting, and speeding would be an agenda item for the June PC meeting. • Removal of tree on Brett Green A Christmas tree planted by a parishioner some years ago had been removed by residents as it was unsightly; however, this had left a large bare patch which the residents proposed to re-seed. It was agreed that the Parish Council would pay for the grass seed. • Water Lane A contractor appointed by Anglian Water had visited on 11 May to high pressure jet-wash the sewers. Although the driver said this had been long pre-arranged, no notification had been received by the PC or the residents of Water Lane; in addition, the road had been closed – again, without notification. The lorry had reversed down Water Lane and became stuck. The Clerk would follow this up, and the PC would continue to monitor issues with HGVs using Water Lane. An Extraordinary Meeting An extraordinary meeting was held on Thursday 13 June in order to confirm the co-option of two further members of the council Tony Stenning and Bill Paton had both attended an interview in 2018 when a casual vacancy had arisen, and had confirmed they remained willing to be coopted. Both had experience of strategic development and planning, and finance. Tony Stenning - Tony had been CEO of an investment company in London before taking a career break to spend more time with his family. Over the years he had undertaken a wide range of voluntary work, including mentoring school children; other strengths included fund raising and IT. It was proposed by MW, seconded by JDC and agreed unanimously that he should be coopted. Bill Paton - With a successful career in insurance over many years, Bill had a good knowledge of committees and how they worked. He was keen to work as part of a team and make the best use of people skills for the good of the community. It was proposed by DP, seconded by SR and agreed unanimously that he should be co-opted. Kersey Mill Newsletter Kersey Mill welcomed a number of new visitors to the site over the recent Bank Holiday weekend. This included The Kersey Tuesday Club, a local organisation which meets on the first Tuesday of the month from March to December at Kersey Village Hall. One of the Club’s programme of events includes a visit to a place of interest. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their visit and were impressed to see the work that had been carried out to date. It was surprising to find that a large proportion of the group had not yet been inside the Mill, as until recent years the building had not open to the general public. Kersey Mill also played host to the Suffolk Outdoor Learning Group for the “Bugs & Fairies Workshops� held on 27th May. Children from ages 3-12 were invited to dress up as their favourite bug or fairy, and there were some impressive costumes on display including a very hungry caterpillar and Snow White! The children were able to explore the river banks and the beautiful natural environment surrounding the Mill, hunting for bugs, insects and wildlife. Their recordings revealed a wide variety of species including stag beetles, shield bugs, grass snakes, blue tits, squirrels, tree creepers, ducklings, swans with their signets, and much more! The resident kestrels were also busy flying backwards and forwards from their nest at the top of the Mill, feeding their young. It was a great way for the children to learn about nature, and combined with the arts and crafts sessions, enjoy a fun day out. The proceeds from these events were kindly donated to the restoration fund. Work is continuing with the restoration of the Mill and the three glut boxes to the water-driven stones have now been repaired and reinstated. Reinstatement of the stone furniture is also proceeding well. Up until June, the lack of water had reduced the ability of the wheel to run for any length of time, however with the recent and persistent spells of heavy rain, water levels are now back to normal for the time of year.
One page for a child, one giant leap for their wellbeing Summer is upon us again, and with it comes The Summer Reading Challenge. Since its inception twenty years ago, the Summer Reading Challenge has been a great opportunity for children to have fun maintaining and increasing their reading levels throughout the school holiday. Reading for pleasure is such an important part of development and the benefits vary from increasing literacy to giving a child higher levels of empathy, confidence and wellbeing. The aim is for each participant to choose and read six books over the summer and visiting their local library to have relaxed chat with a staff member or volunteer about their choices. The best bit is that there is so much to choose from: novels, joke books, fact books; and in different formats too: braille, audio and e-books. There are stickers and rewards to collect along the way and a certificate at the end. But, we believe that any child who participates, whether they finish six books, four, one, or just a couple of pages more than they would normally, has achieved and we acknowledge their efforts as equally important. Why not have a go as well? Set yourself the challenge to read a book alongside your child over the summer. In celebration of 50 years since the first moon landing, there will be a fun Space Chase theme and Hadleigh Library, along with all Suffolk Libraries, are over the moon to be hosting the Summer Reading Challenge, 2019 and are looking forward to seeing you all join in. Registration begins 13th July, challenge starts 20th July ending 7th September. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Double hoorays for the team of employees from Zurich in Ipswich! They chose us as their firm’s Charity Day for 2019. They arrived in force on 24th May and worked from dawn till dusk on the land and many of the maintenance jobs. Look at the photo of this amazing team. Not only have they given us the physical help we needed, they have been sponsored most generously by their firm to do so. The Centre was looking perfect, just like the National Stud at Newmarket when they finished. When the grass grows again, and the weeds creep back, we shall be hoping to have some fresh help. Our regular maintenance volunteers need a boost: some extra bods willing to come over and work here for a couple of hours a week, mending things, mowing, watering and ‘sweeping’. All our lovely volunteers need to take time off for family things from time to time so the more people on the maintenance team, the merrier. Could you consider joining us? (If you are only free in the holidays that’s OK with us.) Our trustees will have held the AGM by the time you read this. I thought it was some kind of meeting, but from what I hear behind my shut door, it’s a party and takes up the whole yard; there is a smell of cooking, a lot of chatter, and a tinkle of glasses. What you humans will get up to in the interests of keeping us going never ceases to amaze me. Our Shelley Show brought June to a close, and the results will soon be up on the web page for you to see. However much the riders achieve for themselves, and we are very proud that they do, they couldn’t really do it without help from Jo Public, in the form of volunteers. I have heard that we need more helpers for the Tuesday rides (5 adult riders, then 4 children, then another 4 children) a pony leader for the Thursday morning boys’ ride at 10.00, and two more side walkers for our Thursday ladies at 11.00, and again for the Thursday afternoon very special needs children who come over from their school during lunch time. A very clever lady called Margaret will allocate help where it is most needed if you just contact her to say when you could commit to working here. I’ll continue with my 30th birthday project of sharing 30 good reasons with my readers as to how people connected with the Shelley Centre feel about their being here: 9) (Is she joking ?) “To get away from my husband!” 10) “ Its nice meeting new people and making friends here. I like helping our riders, and seeing them smile.” 11) “I find it very interesting to encounter so many and various disabilities.” 12) Ruth, who is one of our adult riders: “In short a reason to come to Shelley...........It is a truly special place where miracles happen. There are excellent equine friends along with wonderful people who all contribute to the enrichment of so many lives. A chance too, to get to know EBONY.” Well, I like that Ruth, thank you for mentioning ME. After all the rain of the last month, here’s to everyone enjoying a bit of sun and blue sky as the school holidays loom for our younger riders. To those riders not governed by school term dates, we apologise that we’ll be closed for August, and hope you find a way to take exercise without us! All our Juniors have now started their summer league games in Colchester. We have 6 teams entered and so far everyone is doing great and having so much fun! On 19th May we entered 6 teams into the Colchester Youth Rally, it was a fantastic day, Celestial Blue finished 4th place in the youngest division, Celestial Pink finished 7th in the year 7 group, Cosmic finished 3rd in the year 8 group, Apollo finished 5th in year 8 division, Saturn finished 3rd in the year 9 division and Galaxy finished 2nd in the year 11 group. Well done to all the players! We also entered 3 teams into the Suffolk Junior u16 tournament, our u13 team was the youngest team entered, they finished the morning in 1st place beating 3 u16 teams, they went into the final playing Thetford u16, unfortunately they couldn't grab the win but finished 2nd from 10 teams. Our two Adult Teams played in the Suffolk B2N tournament in May, they had a fantastic time and Suffolk Solar won the tournament winning all their games, fantastic ladies! Our Walking Netball continues every fortnight at Hadleigh High Leisure Centre Saturday Mornings 9-10.30am, this is such a fun and welcoming session for over 14yrs, females and males, the session is ideal for anyone looking to get back into sport/exercise but in a comfortable environment, non pressured environment, the session also provides refreshments and cake at the end. Saturday June 8th and our 3rd cake and plant sale was a great success again (despite the weather). We raised an amazing £1200, £100 more than last year. A number of significant changes are in the pipeline for Newton Green Golf Club’s highly successful annual golf week – including a new main trophy and sponsor. Three of the six days of non-stop golf from August 5 – 10 will feature important changes to re-inforce the week’s desire to provide inclusive golf for members across the club. This year’s event will open on the Monday with an 18-hole, par three tournament organised by advanced coach Tim Cooper, who is celebrating his 25th anniversary with the club as professional. There will also be a new look to the Wednesday, 18-hole Stableford, which is incorporating a yellow peril golf ball wildcard to the proceedings. A different section organises each event at the festival, and this day is now in the hands of the Saturday Morning Ultimate Golf Society, which has made a number of donations to the club over the years. Finally, the 18-hole Saturday proceedings, which traditionally attract around 130 players for Stableford golf and a stroke play element for single handicappers, will have new features. Prizes for the best nine holes will be introduced. Brewers Greene King are the new sponsor of the week, and will be supplying prizes on various days. Additionally, a donor has presented the Golf Festival Trophy for the main Saturday event, which will be handed to the winner at the evening festival party being staged in the club’s marquee. The marquee has been re-roofed at a cost of £3,000 with money mainly raised from festival activities. Entry forms for all events are now on display in the club house.
Hadleigh Cricket Club It’s been a bit of a topsy-turvy kind of month for the 1st XI. They were unfortunate to meet Coggeshall on the day that the Essex side’s overseas player made his debut – not just any old overseas either, just someone who plays in the Big Bash for Adelaide Strikers! Cue for some of the biggest hitting ever seen at our little old ground, which could comfortably fit within the inner ring of the MCG. Perhaps the best result of the month was the away win at Haverhill, and then a 41-run win at home to Suffolk’s Ladies T20 team pictured in Woolpit in a rain-affected front of the Hadleigh pavilion in June game. That took Ben Wallis’s side up to 2nd in the table, but the top half of Division 1 is so congested that by the following week they had sunk back to 6th after a disappointing defeat to previously winless Ipswich. It is a very open league this year so anything is possible as we approach the second half of the season. The same could be said for the 2nd XI, who finally remembered not how to win but how to lose! There is no disgrace that those three defeats have come against the top three teams in the table, and in all three Buster Tampion’s side could conceivably have won. We got within 24 of Stowupland’s 248, while the 107 we scrambled on a ‘sticky dog’ at Harwich looked like being enough when the home side were 64-7. Isaac Toombs almost carried his bat with 93 against St Margarets – I am sure it won’t be long before we are hailing our youngest ever centurion. At the other end of the age scale bodies are starting to creak. Emergency stocks of Deep Heat and Ibuprofen are on order. Simon Gladwell takes the honours for Individual performance of the month with a spell of 7-29 against Ipswich 2nds. We believe these are career-best figures for our bar manager, who banged the shutters down on Ipswich’s run chase. It is turning out to be an excellent season for Simon who also took 620 against Battisford in May. The games have been coming thick and fast for the Ladies team, for whom Nia Evans is in fine form with both bat and ball, consistently scoring in the high 20s and early 30s. Charlotte Stenning is also performing well and against Bardwell the two combined to dominate the game, opening both the bowling and the batting, as the Ladies passed Bardwell’s 120 for the loss of just one wicket. The Ladies have won two and lost three at the halfway stage of their season. On Sunday June 9th we hosted three matches in the regional T20 Women’s County Competition, with Northants winning both their matches against Suffolk and Norfolk, and Norfolk beating Suffolk. It was a great day and we have been delighted to receive favourable comments from the teams about the way we hosted the event. Stoke by Nayland Golf Club On Wednesday the 5th of June 39 SBN members competed for the 2019 Veterans Cup, members having to be over the age of 60 on the day of the competition. The weather was particularly kind to all and the course in excellent condition - well done to the Stoke-byNayland green staff who are doing a great job with both courses, sometimes with reduced staffing. New staff have now been recruited and both courses are already benefitting. Congratulations this year to Peter Jay, with an excellent 43 Peter Jay receiving a “wellpoints, shading out John Williams on done” handshake from the countback. Both clearly had outstanding captain, John Sandford rounds. Leading positions: 1st Peter Jay 43 points on countback; 2nd John Williams 43 points on c/b; 3rd Roger Fleuty 40 points on c/b; 4th Eric Fisher 40 points on c/b. On Saturday the 8th of June the captain held his charity to raise money for his chosen charity ”Action Duchenne”. 34 pairs supported this and was won by Jason Hoggarth and Brian Roloff with 47 points, 5 clear of second place. 2nd place on countback was Matt Thompson & Thomas Hatton and 3rd Dave Holland & Tim Dickens. The players were invited to try to hit a floating green from the 18th tee. 13 members hit the island, but no one got it in a hole so a draw is to be made for the winner of the 4 ball voucher. Thanks also to Miles Collins for his support on the day, raising £250 by driving for the members on the 4th. Estimated just over £1,000 was raised on the day. On Sunday the 9th of June, the Gainsborough Championship was played for. The best gross round was by Andrew Tokley, newly returned to the amateur ranks, with a score of level par 71. 3 Birdies and 3 bogeys gave him the best score and his name on the board as Gainsborough champion. Best net score of 62 was recorded by James Kendrick (15) which was 2 better than Byron Long (12). Both players have now been cut by 2 shots. The previous week the 4th round of the Laird was played on the Gainsborough course. After 4 rounds the leader board is very close with Robert Gilfillan in first with a 3 score total of 117 stableford points. In second place are Mark Theobald and Glen Jackson on 116 points. Glen moved up from 8th place to level with the 3rd round leader, Mark, who was a non-mover but the biggest change was Robert who scored 42 points in round 4 to take him into the lead.

Well, let’s start with the new members! Twenty people came to the open days in May and 11 have joined up so far. Each new member is given an experienced mentor to support them and explain everything they need to know. As you can see from the photo, some need more help than others....like it’s usually better to play on the green rather than the clubhouse roof, but never mind, they’ll get there in the end. The recent weather hasn’t been very friendly though the drainage on our green is so well constructed that we can easily play when it’s raining. Other clubs have more problems and so quite a few away games have been postponed or cancelled. Not so our undaunted Ladies team led by Christine Woollard who played here in the rain in the Suffolk Top Team competition and beat Sparrows Nest from Lowestoft a convincing 5-1 to progress to the next round. Elsewhere club teams are doing well in the league programmes, and in the county competitions where they’ve won three games out of three. Go Hadleigh! In less stressful games, unless you’re far too competitive and need to get back on medication, we’ve played a friendly against Holywells and in the internal one-day 3 wood pairs Peggy Hogsden and David Kemp came out winners against a lot of good players. Well done them. Our regular links with the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance continue and if you’re interested please contact HDAA.
