The Hadleigh Thrift Shop is 20 years old! ‘Helping Us help Hadleigh’ has been The Hadleigh Thrift Shop’s philosophy since it started; 20 years on and this motto is as vibrant as ever. Barbara Boyd and her team would very much like all its supporters, groups and partners to come to the celebratory Birthday Party on Saturday 10th August (10am to 2 pm). This provides an opportunity to share memories of successes over the two decades (and perhaps some of the challenges!). In August 1999, Barbara Boyd (then a newcomer to Hadleigh) opened the Thrift Shop in the High Street and was overwhelmed with how the Town opened its heart to her. Over the years, well over 30 people have been highly committed, valuable volunteers at the shop, which quickly became a hub for meeting and sharing conversations as well as fund-raising for causes important to Hadleigh. With so many organisations supported it is hard to pick out highlights but worth mentioning is the Thrift Shop helping save the Day Centre at Magdalen House and its on-going support. The move of the Shop to the current premises four years ago helped grow the support that both donors and volunteers could make. Barbara says, “Our volunteers are a vital to our work - without them we wouldn’t exist. By the same token we’d be nothing without the donors and customers. Many, many thanks go to this wonderful community of Hadleigh. We have a series of activities over the day to say thank you: Boudicca Border Morris, The Summer Smarties Challenge, Balloon Launch, Face Paints, Cakes, Barbara’s Banter, HFT’s History Photoslide and The infamous Mario Gellatti’s Special Ice-Cream demonstrations”. So, come and join Hadleigh Thrift Shop’s party on 10th August to raise a glass to at least another 20 years of The Thrift Shop.

Come to Hadleigh Nursing Home’s Grand Summer Fete and win a helicopter trip! Families are invited to a summer fete in the garden of Hadleigh Nursing Home, in Friars Road, Hadleigh, on Saturday, August 10, from 2pm to 4.30pm. Manager Tracey Burt said: “We are planning the sort of fete you will remember from your childhood with entertaining games the whole family will want to take part in.� Among the attractions will be target football, target bowls and the ever popular coconut shy. There will be a range of stalls, including craft stalls, a tombola and refreshments. A raffle will include the fabulous prize of a helicopter ride for two people – the chance to see your home from the air! – with other prizes kindly donated by local businesses.
Rotary Review As the new Rotary Year started on July 1 it is appropriate to remember the achievements of the past 12 months. There have been a number of successful and enjoyable social events including the Christmas Party, New Year Champagne Brunch and Charter Celebration Lunch. Some ÂŁ3000 has been distributed to local and international charities with about 80% going to local causes. Most of the funds were collected during a very successful Christmas Collection and a raffle at Charter Lunch. Internationally the Club has supported Shelter Box for disaster relief, Mercy Ships and Rotary's own End Polio Now. Mercy Ships is a superb charity providing medical aid to mainly West African countries. Its ship visits various ports during the year and people travel many miles often on foot to get treatment . The ship is manned by volunteer doctors,surgeons,opticians, dentists and nurses etc and all manner of operations are carried out free of charge giving new life to thousands of people. Whilst in port the staff also train local doctors in many procedures to enable better care to continue when the ship leaves. With regard to End Polio Now, Rotary together with its partners World Health Organisation and Bill Gates Foundation continue to raise millions to eradicate polio from earth.In the last 12 months only Pakistan and Afghanistan have recorded new polio cases where conflict and tribal resistance has hampered the vaccination programme. The good news is that India has been free of wild polio virus for 5 years and Nigeria for 3 years. Of course the vaccination programmes must continue for more years and hence funds are still urgently needed. So members say goodbye to outgoing President Linda Humphries thanking her very much indeed for her hard work and dedication during her year of office and now welcome Richard Whiting as their New President wishing him a very successful year to come. Richard is hoping that all members will be able to participate in some way in the usual varied social and fundraising programmes. He would very much like the Club to become more involved with the younger members of Hadleigh society and therefore seeks new younger members who may connect more easily with the youngsters. To this end the Club will be represented at the Hadleigh on Show event in the Autumn and invite anyone who maybe interested in learning more about Rotary and perhaps seeking to help in some way to visit the stand where Rotarians will be ready to talk to you. Hadleigh Cycling Club
Enjoy a challenge? Get out on your bike Hadleigh Cycling Club will be running the fifth annual Gayford Flyer on Sunday, 15th September 2019. The Gayford Flyer is a noncompetitive cycle sportive. There are two signed rides of 62 miles (100km) and 31 miles (50km). Full details and the story of Oswald Gayford can be found at www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk. Entry is via the British Cycling website (www.britishcycling.org.uk) and the last day is Sunday, 8th September. There is no entry on the day. Riders pay ÂŁ12.50 to enter and helmets are compulsory. “Last year’s sportive was fantasticâ€?, said Mike Motteram, Chairman of Hadleigh Cycling Club. “Most of the riders and their families stayed around and enjoyed refreshments and live music at The George.â€? British Cycling said that the Flyer “was a super event – well thought through, well executed and very enjoyable to be part of.â€? One of the entrants emailed afterwards,â€?Completed the Spitfire route. Thought it was one of the best sportives I've done, friendly marshals, riders, superb route and great atmosphere, mind you the weather couldn't have been better. I'll be signing up next year.â€? Our Cycling Club is anxious to offer the broadest range of opportunities for local folk to enjoy cycling. We want to attract the “super fitâ€? and the “less than super fitâ€?. During the summer we have rides on Mondays, Fridays, some Saturdays and Sunday. Why not try our Sunday morning social rides from the George starting at 8am, with a guaranteed cafĂŠ stop, weather permitting. Adults and “capable children accompanied by an adultâ€? are all welcome. There continues to be significant pedestrian safety issues in Benton Street caused by vehicles frequently driving on pavements, as well as traffic flow and congestion issues. Following on from data gathering and analysis, officers from Suffolk Highways have designed several traffic management options which could be trialled and installed permanently if proven successful. Before Suffolk County Councillor, Mick Fraser, can consult with Suffolk Highways to consider a preferred option, or options, it is important to have a consensus from Hadleigh’s residents and support of the Town Council. In order that the new Council has appreciation of these options, Mick Fraser will present and describe them to the Council on Monday 19th August at 7pm in the Dining Room at the Town Hall/Guildhall Complex. Work to build a new swimming pool at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre is set to begin at the end of this month. Babergh District Council is investing ÂŁ2.4m, with ÂŁ200,000 of funds provided by Hadleigh Town Council and a Sports England grant (ÂŁ150k), to build a new swimming pool at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre which will replace the existing pool once complete. Local firm, Rose Builders has been appointed to carry out the works which are expected to begin late July. The existing pool will remain open during construction. Hadleigh Pool & Leisure’s other facilities including the gym, group exercise classes and the community and social rooms will also be open and unaffected. The new pool is expected to be opened to the public in late May 2020. The existing pool will then be demolished, and the area will then be relandscaped into park land, resulting in no net loss of open space. The works will include; New pool with five 25 metre lanes, Disabled access to the pool via easy access steps and handrail or via lift, Changing Places toilet and shower facility, Sauna, Spectator seating & Access through to the existing changing facilities, refurbished in 2010. A local artist has been invited to create a design for the brise soleil which will be located at the front of the new pool. Tracey Loynds, Development Director for Abbeycroft Leisure, said: “This is a huge investment for Abbeycroft Leisure and Hadleigh, and builds on the work which has already begun to develop the Kingfisher Leisure Centre in Sudbury. The new pool, sauna and facilities will go a long way to supporting our community to get more active and relax too. Inspiring a healthier you. This modern facility will improve the customer experience for those swimming and spectating. Our non-user research suggests that those put off by the ageing facilities will return to the pool, which is great news for everyone.â€? Cllr Derek Davis, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “We’re excited to start work on a new pool for the people of Hadleigh. This will allow us to offer up to date and modern facilities while also providing new community facilities such as the Changing Places toilet and shower. We recognise that to support our residents to remain healthy and active, we need to be investing in and improving our leisure facilities and infrastructure. This work takes an important step towards achieving the aims set out in our Leisure, Sport & Physical Activity Strategy.â€? Cllr Steve Allman, Hadleigh Town Council’s Mayor, said: “We’re very fortunate to have our own public swimming pool in Hadleigh and I’m delighted with the plans to invest in its future by creating a brand new pool. Did you know that we treat vertigo (BPPV) at Hadleigh Physiotherapy? Vertigo, also known as Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) causes brief episodes of mild to intense dizziness. BPPV is usually triggered by specific changes in the position of your head. This might occur when you tip your head up or down, when you lie down, or when you turn over or sit up in bed. Symptoms may include; dizziness, vomiting, loss of balance, room spinning sensations, nausea, and stiffness of the neck. BPPV is often associated with a minor to severe blow to your head. Less common causes of BPPV include disorders that damage your inner ear or, rarely, damage that occurs during ear surgery or during prolonged positioning on your back. BPPV also has been associated with migraines. Vertigo occurs most often in people age 50 and older but can occur at any age. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is also more common in women than in men. At Hadleigh Physio we assess and treat vertigo with specific evidence-based techniques shown to reduce and stop the symptoms. Howzat.....? This summer brings the Ashes Test series with England playing Australia, T20 games and a successful World Cup for England. As long as the sunshines and the rain stays away, there are plenty of matches to keep all cricket fans busy. Whether you are a test match special fan, or prefer to follow the games live or on the television, spare a thought for the players and the physical toll it takes on their bodies. Here at Hadleigh and Sudbury osteopaths we treat all sorts of cricketers, both male and female. We see junior and senior club and county players and even an international player, as well as enthusiastic amateurs (some of whom have racked up their best score several seasons ago!). Perhaps the most common cricketing injuries we see are shoulder problems, such as rotator cuff tears and sprains, where any of the four muscles that stabilise the shoulder can be involved. These injuries can affect both batsmen and bowlers. We also see a lot of ankle sprains, as like knees, the ankles an be injured as a result of jumping or sprinting, particularly if there is a sudden change in direction. Fielders who repetitively throw in can be at risk of injury to their elbows, either on the inside aspect of the joint where the flexor tendons attach to the bone, or on the outside where the extensor muscles attach. Low back injuries are also common, especially in the promising players who may play for several teams, and spend a lot of time in the nets. The forces going through the lumbar spine and sacroiliac joints can be quite substantial, when you consider that the ball is released with enough power to enable it to travel at up to160 km/hour. The forces going through the lumbar spine are significant enough to cause vertebral fractures in up to 15% of elite fast bowlers. Then there are the poor wicket keepers’ hips and knees to consider.... We can help to address problems in any of these areas, (whether you are a cricketer or not,) as well as giving exercises and advice about injury prevention and rehabilitation. The Ashbocking Herd comes to Hadleigh Market On the first Friday of every month, you’ll be able to meet Jo Henderson, proud owner of the Ashbocking Herd and buy her delicious, traditional cuts of pork when she becomes our newest addition at Hadleigh Market. Two years ago Jo decided to hang up her hat as a Social Worker in Child Protection, a decision that was shortly followed by the arrival of seven pigs in April 2017. By September of that year her seven pigs had become seventeen, in October, twenty three! She now has a herd of around fifty, some of which are small black pigs with prick ears & snub noses, similar to the Suffolk Small Black (now extinct). As the herd grew, Jo decided to work full time at growing the business, with a little help from a PPI pay out and Andrew, her partner. She learnt how to butcher a pig and took on-line courses in catering and in March 2018 was given a 5 * rating for butchery. Jo started trading in June 2018 and you can now find her at three Farmers Markets across Suffolk in Bury St Edmunds, Sudbury & Ipswich. Jo is a real traditionalist at heart and she has developed her butchery to reflect this. When the pig is butchered, half goes fresh to the market & the other half is either cured or made into sausages & faggots. Her stall is always really busy at all the farmers markets she attends and we are absolutely delighted that she will be joining us at Hadleigh Market, on the first Friday of every month with her traditional cuts of pork. Please make sure you come along and meet Jo and learn about her pigs; it is an inspiring story and the people of Hadleigh are very lucky that Jo is going to be a part of their weekly market. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk Like many readers of this column I was very concerned when I heard that a number of bus routes in South Suffolk would lose their subsidy, potentially threatening their viability. As such, as soon as possible after hearing the news I met with officials from Suffolk County Council to highlight the extent to which my constituents will be affected by these changes. A number of the parish councils, and local residents, have already written to me to set out their concerns. I do sympathise, given that we are often talking about a very rare local service and one serving remote and potentially more vulnerable constituents. This is also happening at a time when school bus services are being reconfigured in ways that have plainly presented significant challenges to many parents. Having said all that, we cannot ignore the fact that some local bus services are very far from being economic. I have spent time with Cllr Mary Evans, Suffolk’s cabinet member for transport, going through the detail of specific routes and their long-term viability. Some services that are threatened receive subsidies as high as £25 per ticket and I am not a supporter of largely empty diesel double-deckers driving around the countryside at taxpayers’ expense. So, what can we do? On some of these routes, where the subsidy is not enormous, the bus service providers will be encouraged to run the route without Council funding. On the less popular routes, it may be that community transport providers, or taxi-buses, could take over the service on a commercial basis. Fundamentally, I am keen to see these routes maintained where possible and so want to use this opportunity to look at potential innovation. I have already organised a meeting of local taxi firms with SCC transport officials to explore how they could set up as taxi-bus operators, and will also be engaging with community transport providers. Finally, I will be encouraging all operators to secure the Government funding available to upgrade their buses and taxis to electric vehicles. With some forward-thinking it may be possible to provide more versatile, financially sustainable and environmentally-friendly services.

Year 11 Prom This term we said goodbye to the Class of 2019! Year 11 students worked hard through their exams and celebrated in style at their Prom which took place at ‘The Venue’ at Kersey Mill. Congratulations to the prom committee who helped organise the event. Students arrived for the event in a wide range of spectacular cars, horse drawn carriages and even tractors (with one driven by a student who recently passed his test). Dressed in their finest suits and ball gowns the students had a welcome drink and a two course meal served by Jamie Lee Catering. Once the speeches had finished it was time to party into the night! While some students elected for the photo booth, others took the opportunity to have a professional photo taken with their peers by Crown Photography. It was a fantastic night of dancing, laughing and celebrating their time at Hadleigh High School. We wish all of our Year 11 students the very best in their future endeavours.
Physixfactor Physixfactor is a competition organised by the Ogden Trust to promote Physics engagement with KS3 pupils. This year the trust kindly decided to name the trophy after our inspiring physics teacher, the late Daniel Greenwood. We had lots of entries from individuals and teams in Year 8 and it was genuinely difficult to choose who to take to the regional final hosted at Northgate High School. After much deliberation the science team decided the best entries were as follows: 1st Place Bethany Herron for her excellent model showing energy transfers, 2nd Place Charlie Miller for his model demonstrating electromagnetism and joint 3rd place was for the team of Ollie Knuckey and Jamie Parker showing what happens to an astronaut without a suit in space. The students took their models to Northgate High School and had to explain the theory and practice to a panel of expert physics judges and interested parents and students. Although we didn’t win the Greenwood trophy this year our students represented the school superbly and should be rightly proud of their efforts. We will return next year to try and win the cup!
World Day On Thursday 4th July Year 8 took part in ‘World Day’ organized by Mrs Miller. The purpose of the day was to broaden students' horizons both culturally and linguistically and to encourage their interest in languages. In today’s global society it has never been more important to be open-minded, tolerant and supportive of other people and cultures. Following an introductory assembly, students spent the day visiting workshops and learning about 6 different countries: Japan, Zimbabwe, Spain, China, Cameroon and Romania. In each workshop students were also given samples of authentic food to taste. We are very grateful to The Thrift Shop in Hadleigh who were generous enough to make a donation for this day, allowing us to buy samples of typical food from the countries for students to taste. The day finished with a reflection session, during which students were asked, ‘Has today changed the way you think about other countries or languages at all?’ Answers included: ‘Yes, because there is so much more to the world than just Britain,’ ‘Yes I have a lot more respect for people from some countries as it must be extremely hard to survive,’ and ‘Other cultures are just different from each other, not wrong.’ The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and felt that they had learnt considerably more about the world they live in. 20

By Karen Finch - Managing Director & Senior Audiologist at The Hearing Care Centre One of the biggest challenges facing us at The Hearing Care Centre is the patient who explains they are having problems understanding what’s being said, yet when we carry out a test, the results suggest they don’t have a hearing loss. Puzzled when we report that their hearing is within the normal limits, the patient describes they while they can hear noises, but they are having increasing difficulties making sense of the noise in noisy places such as restaurants. When they go on an outing to, say, the cinema they don’t enjoy it because they feel they are constantly battling with accents, background sounds and music. Watching the TV at home is the same. The patient often also complains of tinnitus which is a condition defined by strange background noises in the ears which cannot be explained. And believe me, telling someone they don’t have a problem, when clearly, they believe they do, is even more stressful for them than if we had found a reason for their difficulties. Here are two ways to help the situation: • Simply monitor the situation and that they come back each year for a further test • Turn to some of the excellent advanced hearing aids that are now available for us to prescribe, such as a low-amplification hearing aid, perhaps with a remote microphone for use in restaurants or maybe meetings. After a trial we might have expected the patient to return the hearing aids with thanks, but more often they report that things have improved immeasurably, that they’re coping much better, feeling less stressed when talking (or listening to others) and that their tinnitus has improved. These experiences remind us that principally we are NOT treating hearing loss. We are here to help people communicate and it is the loss of communication ability through hearing loss that causes our patients most stress. It also reminds us of the importance of holistic care, listening to what our patients tell us rather than slavishly sticking to the results of our tests, and then providing solutions that solve their communications issues. Hadleigh Walkers Our August walk on Saturday 10th will start and finish in Hadleigh and is one we haven’t done for quite some time. It is around 11 miles and takes us via the Railway Walk to Little Wenham, Great Wenham, Holton St Mary, Sodom & Gomorrah, Shelley, Lower Layham and then back to Hadleigh. We will meet at 0930 at St Mary’s School on Stonehouse Road. The walk is not strenuous and we will probably stop for 2 snack breaks along the way. We should be back in Hadleigh around 1430. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy or rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. Looking further out to September, we are planning a shortish walk along the River Stour. We will catch a train from Manningtree to Wrabness and walk back to Manningtree. The train journey takes about 9 minutes and will cost around £2.50 each. More details next month. On Friday 5th July 2019 at 7.30pm, 22 of our Hadleigh United football club veterans took part in our 30 Mile Drop fundraiser for Addenbrooke’s hospital. We were raising funds for the ward who looked after and treated our Isabelle Kossick - daughter of player Richard Kossick and his wife Laura (and big sister to Henry) who was diagnosed with Leukaemia last year aged just 4. The boys were put into 5 teams picked by Isabelle, blindfolded, put into cars and a host of volunteer drivers ‘dropped’ them 30 miles away from home (aka Hadleigh United Football club)The aim was to get back within 24 hours raising the most money on their way. They also had to walk the entire distance (no hitching a ride) and had no mobile phones, maps or cash to use on the way back. We were able to set up a tracking website so family and friends were able to see who was going where and who was in the lead throughout the challenge. The boys were monitored overnight by our dedicated fundraising team of Carl Beer and Linzi Hills who were also on standby to pick up anyone if the need arose. We didn’t need to wait long, our first team of Stuart Kellett, Matty Baalham, David Spraggons, Stewy Right and Steve Barton arrived back at the club at around 4.50am. Closely followed by the next team - Ben Wilkins, John Chinnery, Rowan Pritchard, and Dean Skinner. The third team back was Gary Bignall, Ali Carter, Mick Ashmore, Simon Laird, and Paul Sheldrake. The fourth team home was ‘Captain’ Ben Dixon, Matt Edwards, Richard Kossick, and Ben Goodchild. Our final team back who were eventually crowned the winning team consisted of Greg Hills, Ross Parker, Matt Patrick, and Dan Mackenzie. After the boys were washed and rested we completed our fundraising weekend with a Raffle and Auction held at Hadleigh United football club. We had some great prizes up for grabs... A Garmin watch, a signed England Rugby ball, cupcake bouquets, Glider Flight, Private chef at home, Cocktail master class at the Shard in London, Signed VETs shirt by legends Alan Brazil, Dean Saunders, Terry Butcher, Ali McCoist, and Ray Parlour....the list went on. We were all completely blown away by the support we had for this fantastic cause and we are pleased to announce that our total funds raised for Addenbrookes hospital currently stands at...£11,048.32!! We have so many people to thank, (so sorry if I miss anyone) firstly thank you to the Kossick family for letting us raise money in Isabelle’s name, to all the HUFC vets who took part in the ‘drop’ and worked hard behind the scenes, to the ‘drivers’ who dropped the boys to their destinations, to anyone who donated a prize, bought or sold a ticket and who came and supported us on the night, to Hadleigh United football club for letting us use the venue and for all your support, to Michaela and Gary Chisnall for helping us promote the event, to Captain Ben Dixon - the team wouldn’t be here without you, and lastly to Carl Beer and Linzi Hills who have lived, breathed and hardly slept through the last few months but organised a truly fantastic event and raised a phenomenal amount of money. Isabelle is currently in remission from her Leukaemia and has been since October 2018, she finally finished her treatment in March this year and has been given the all clear. This event has shown the true spirit of our community which we are so pleased to be a part of...now for some football!! Cheryl Beer

Hadleigh Town Council Minutes of the meeting of the Council held on 20th June 2019 at 7.30pm Present: Cllrs; Steve Allman (Mayor) Helen Allan, Vic Faccini, Lisa Gordon, Andrew Knock, Gavin Talbot, Emma Wilson-Downes, Mrs S Frankis, Locum Town Clerk & RFO Mrs S Munson, Administration Assistant Suffolk County Cllr, Mick Fraser, District Cllr, Kathryn Grandon, Carolyn Cammack (Deputy Mayor) James Bayliss, Angela Gregg, Richard Hinton, Carol Schleip, Paul Twyman, Emily Wright, 18 members of the public. The Mayor read aloud a statement, indicating that, in accordance with the changes in legislation, the public and Cllrs were allowed to film, record, photograph and use social media to report on the proceedings of the meeting. A full transcript is available from the Clerk. No one identified themselves as filming or recording the meeting. To Receive Apologies For Absence The Council resolved to receive the apologies received from Cllr Rolf Beggerow, for his absence due to personal commitments. To Accept Members Declarations Of Interest Cllr Gordon declared an interest relating to agenda item no: 9(i). Consideration For Dispensations For Pecuniary Interest None were received. To Confirm And Sign The Minutes Of The Annual Town Council Meetng Held On 16th May 2019 The minutes should record that District Cllr Grandon had been present at the meeting. Public Forum: min. no: 8 – the minutes should record the answers to the questions raised by a member of the public on 9th May 2019, relating to Cemetery Lodge. The answers were as follows: 1. HTC engaged the services of a suitably qualified professional to undertake a Valuation of Cemetery Lodge; the inspection was undertaken on 16th December 2017. 2. The open market value as at 16th December 2017 was set at £325,000. 3. The Periodic Tenancy Agreement (to cover the period 1st March 2018 to 28th February 2024) of 1st March 2018 set the rent at £730p/calendar month. HTC, through the services of a suitably qualified professional undertakes a rent review exercise every 2 years; such revised rent shall come into force on 1st March 2020 and 1st March 2022. 4. It would be for the current Council, at any given time, to decide why the Lodge should not be sold. Cllr Knock asked if copies of all agenda associated documents could be made available for members of the public attending the meeting. The Council unanimously resolved to publish meeting related papers on the Town Council website, prior to the meeting and to make available a couple of hard copies at the meeting. Action: the clerk shall publish meeting related papers on the town council website, prior to the meeting and shall arrange for hard copies to be made available at the meeting. The minutes were then signed as a true and accurate record of the meeting. 28. Review Of Actions Arising From The Annual Town Council Meeting Held On 16th May 2019 Public Forum: min. no. 8 – The Mayor advised that the Royal British Legion representative had recently approached him, asking to talk with him. The Mayor confirmed that he will accept the request and will report back to the Council. Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity (HMFC): min. no. 10 – Cllr Gregg asked if an explanation had been received regarding the query of the miscellaneous fee of over £1,000. Cllr Allan advised that all accounting documents are currently with the auditor and that she will report back once the accounts have been returned. The Mayor confirmed that Trustee Liability Insurance was in place. Following the Council’s resolution to suspend the HMFC AGM, the Mayor advised that he has been assured that no wrong doing had occurred by the Council when they suspended the Town Council Committee Structure, as the Charity isn’t a committee. Cllr Gordon asked if the Market House damp inspection report had been made available to Cllr Beggerow, as requested. Mrs Munson advised that the report was in the ‘Charity Box’ for viewing. ‘New Council’ Meeting with SALC: min. no: 14 – The Mayor advised that there had been a misunderstanding as the Council weren’t being asked to set a date for a Council meeting but rather a meeting of cllrs. Matters Raised by Members: min. no: 20 – Mrs Munson advised that all cost figures associated with the cemetery extension works will be reported on a spreadsheet, still to be finalised. 29. To Receive Reports From The Police, County & District Cllrs A report had been received from County Cllr Fraser and circulated to the Council. Cllr Fraser advised that on 4th June, the Hadleigh Traffic Management Working Group had met with the Suffolk Highways Engineer, Mr Gant and Cllr Evans, the Cabinet member for Highways and SCC Deputy Leader to discuss Benton Street, Pedestrian & Disabled Safety and crossing points, the A1071/Aldham Mill Hill Junction, High Street/Magdalen Road one-way system and the Community Self Help Scheme. Cllr Knock referred to the New Highways Self Help scheme, designed to support and empower town and parish councils in Suffolk to carry out minor maintenance tasks in their area, previously undertaken by Suffolk County 26

Council (SCC). He asked if funding would be made available for the town and parish councils from SCC. Cllr Fraser advised that SCC will support town and parish councils by providing training, personal PPE and any necessary tools. Cllr Schleip asked if Cllr Fraser had been able to find out the purpose of the compulsory purchase order relating to land adjacent to the fire station. He had recalled that it could be related to drainage works but was waiting for clarification from SCC. Cllr Grandon advised the purchase was related to drainage infrastructure from Oxford Drive, enabling Anglian Water to take control of the matter. A report had been received from District Cllr Grandon and circulated to the Council, prior to the meeting. Cllr Grandon is Babergh’s newly elected Chair and has named Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance as her charity for 2019-20. She advised that following the success of the Vision for Sudbury, Hadleigh residents will have the opportunity to take part in workshops on 25th June at Hadleigh Town Hall, where they can give their views on the direction they want for Hadleigh in the future; she urged people to attend. She advised that the Babergh Joint Local Plan (JLP) will be going forward to Babergh Full Council on 25th June, before going out for Public Consultation. The Mayor reminded the Council that the Clerk had circulated an email notification regarding the JLP that afternoon. Cllr Grandon reminded the meeting that in her election leaflet, she had promised to get the Railway Walk car park improved. She will be putting together a simple questionnaire to be circulated. It is intended that the car park will remain free to use but that a time limited ticket system will be introduced. Cllr Knock expressed concerns that the primary school staff who currently use the car park, will be forced to park on the road instead. Action: Cllr Knock Offered To Contact The Primary School For Their Views Regarding The Proposal. Cllr Grandon advised that the no: 90 bus service is unlikely to continue due to the lack of use. 30. To Decide The Structure, Powers And Appointment Of Town Council Committees Cllr Talbot had drafted a summary report and context based on research he had undertaken regarding alternative committee structures and the way committees work in order to improve the way that Hadleigh Town Council undertakes its business in an effective and transparent manner; the draft report had been circulated to the Council, prior to the meeting. It was proposed that Hadleigh Town Council adopt the Frome Town Council structure of Full Council, Town Matters Committee, Council Matters Committee, a Planning Advisory Group and to form Working Groups as and when necessary. It was proposed that the Committees would have delegated powers, which could evolve over time. The Feoffment Charity would be a Council committee. The Council voted 10 in favour and 4 against the proposal. The Mayor advised that the Council would resolve to have the committees in place asap. It was proposed that a Feoffment Committee be formed. The Council voted 13 in favour and 1 against the proposal. Cllr Allan volunteered to undertake the role of Chair of the Feoffment Committee. There being no other nominations, the Council voted unanimously in favour of Cllr Allan being appointed Chair of the Feoffment Committee. Cllrs Gregg, Talbot, Cammack, Schleip, Twyman and Wright put themselves forward to be members of the Feoffment Committee. Cllr Allan advised that Cllr Beggerow had also expressed an interest in being a Feoffment Committee member. 31.To Review The List Of Local Groups Requesting Town Council Representation And To Appoint Representatives To Those Groups The following appointments were agreed: The Mayor SALC Representive, The Mayor Hadleigh Twinning Representative (by default), Cllr WilsonDownes Wattisham Liaison Officer, Cllr Wright Footpath Warden, Cllr Cammack Hadleigh Steering Group, Cllr Schleip & Cllr Bayliss Hadleigh Elderly Peoples Welfare Committee, Cllr Bayliss & Cllr Faccini Hadleigh Traffic Managenent Working Group. It was agreed that further information about the role of tree warden, the Woollen Towns Association representative and the Ann Beaumont Charity Town Council nominative trustees, was needed before agreeing appointments to these roles. Action: The Clerk Is To Seek Further Information About The Role Of The Tree Warden, The Woollen Towns Association Representative And The Ann Beaumont Charity Town Council Nominative Trustees. Cllr Wright advised that Hadleigh Library would appreciate Town Council involvement. It was agreed the library should contact the Clerk to details of their request. 32. FINANCE: (i) Authorise o/s payments for May 2019 and to authorise payments for June 2019 Payments below £500 had been approved and authorised by the Mayor and Clerk, prior to the meeting, in accordance with Hadleigh Town Council’s Financial Regulation 4.1. At the last meeting of the Council, Cllr Gregg had raised a question relating to the payment for Guildhall energy and how a split should be apportioned to the Council and the Guildhall, rather than the Council paying the bill in its entirety; she asked if the bill had since been split. Cllr Allan advised that she has begun searching through Minute Books looking to determine how the Council has found itself paying for all energy costs. It was proposed that the monthly Occupational Fees, paid by the Council to the Hadleigh Feoffment Market Charity be deferred and to ask the newly formed Charity Committee to put forward a proposal for an alternative ongoing
commitment from the Council. The Council voted unanimously in favour of the proposal. Cllrs raised concerns regarding the ongoing payments associated with the cemetery extension works. Action: Mrs Munson Agreed To Forward A Copy Of The Monthly Update Reports Received Cllr Knock expressed concerns that the Council was being asked to authorise payments for the cemetery works when, in his opinion, members didn’t have sufficient information to do so. The Council was reminded that under Financial Regulation 12, the payments would be authorised by the RFO. Action: Monthly Update Reports, As Received From The Project Manager, Shall Be Circulated To The Council. Action: Copies Of The Certificates For Payment, As Received From The Project Manager, Shall Be Circulated To The Council. 9.00pm Cllr G Talbot left the meeting. Cllr P Twyman left the meeting. 9.05pm Cllr G Talbot returned to the meeting. 9.08pm Cllr L Gordon left the meeting. Cllr Knock asked for details of the payment to Quantrills. The Mayor advised that this was a payment related to legal advice in relation to a confidential matter. 9.13pm Cllr L Gordon returned to the meeting. It was proposed to authorise all payments over £500, as listed on the schedule, with the exception of the two payments of £1,430.75 due for the Occupational Fee for May and June 2019, payable to the Hadleigh Feoffment Market Charity. The Council voted 11 in favour and 1 against the proposal. Cllr Gordon abstained from the vote. (ii) To verify reconciliation of accounts against bank statements. The Clerk advised that the information was unavailable at this time to undertake the reconciliation. (iii) To consider renewal of Local Council Public Advisory Service Subscription. The Council voted 11 in favour and 2 against the proposal not to renew the subscription. (iv) To decide the Mayor’s and Deputy Mayor’s allowance. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor advised that they are both keen not to inherit a mayoral allowance but to be able to claim out of pocket expenses. The Mayor advised that he has decided not to have a Civic Service but would prefer to arrange a community event. The Council voted 12 in favour and 1 against the proposal. The Clerk advised that a total of £5,580 had been budgeted in 2091/20 for Mayoral Expenses; she suggested that the budget heading remain as is but with the option to vire funds to a different heading later on, if needed. 33. To Receive The Town Council Internal Audit Report For The Year Ending 31st March 2019 And To Consider The Recommendations Therein The Clerk had circulated a copy of the Internal Audit Report to the Council prior to the meeting. The Council received the report and agreed that the new Committee would look at the recommendations therein. The Clerk agreed that a copy of the Internal Report could be published on the website. Action: The Clerk Is To Arrange For A Copy Of The Internal Report To Be Published On The Website. 34. To Approve The Annual Accounts As At 31st March 2019 A copy of the accounts as at 31st March 2019 had been circulated to the Council prior to the meeting. The Council voted 12 in favour and 1 against of approving the accounts. Action: The Clerk Is To Provide Details Of The Unpresented Cheques, As Reported In The Accounts, And To Provide A Detailed Breakdown Of The Administration Income And Expenditure Costs, As Presented In The Income And Expenditure Accounts. 35. To Approve The 2019 Annual Governance And Accountability Return A copy of the 2019 Annual Governance and Accountability Return had been circulated to the Council, prior to the meeting. The Council unanimously agreed to approve Section 1 and then Section 2 of the Return. 36. General Power Of Competence – To Consider The Council’s Eligibility The Council resolved that it meets the eligibility criteria to use the Power of Competence by meeting the electoral mandate requirements and by having a fully trained Clerk. 37. To Adopt New And Revised Policies & Procedures – (i) Complaints Procedure (ii) Data Breach Policy (iii) Data Protection & Information Management Policy (iv) Dignity at Work Policy (v) Employee Disciplinary Policy (vi) Grievance Policy (vii) Equality & Diversity Policy (viii) Financial Reserves Policy (ix) Freedom of Information Policy The Clerk had circulated draft copies of the policies to the Council prior to the meeting. The Council decided to defer this item. The Council resolved that the time limitations in Standing Order 25 and in Standing Order 48 shall be suspended for this meeting only which shall finish by 10.15pm. 38. Public Forum/Participation – This Agenda Item Shall Not Exceed 15mins. A member of the public advised the Council that there are presently 2 volunteer footpath wardens. A member of the public asked if the Feoffment Charity Committee meetings will be open to the public; the Mayor advised that the Committee meetings will be open to the public. A member of the public invited the Council to attend the next Hadleigh Steering Group meeting to be held on 12th August 2019 at 4.15pm. A member of the public expressed concerns regarding the gradients of the land at the cemetery extension and
was of the belief that the land will be too steep to use. They urged the Council to speak with the insurers without delay. Mrs Munson advised that the insurers had been contacted a while ago who had confirmed there they had no issues of concern. A member of the public thanked the Council for putting the agenda of the meeting and the draft minutes of the last meeting on the website. 39. Community Matters (i) To note the recent communication received from the Hadleigh Twinning Ass. The Mayor advised that the Hadleigh Twinning Association has booked rooms at the Guildhall on Saturday, 30th May 2020; this happens every 2 years when they entertain the French during their visit to Hadleigh. (ii) To consider continued partnership with the Hadleigh Society in relation to compiling a list of non-designated heritage assets. The Council confirmed its intention to continue the partnership with The Hadleigh Society. Action: The Clerk Is To Confirm The Council’s Continued Partnership With The Hadleigh Society. (iii) ‘Hadleigh Vision’ – to agree a vision of intent The Council unanimously agreed to support the ‘Hadleigh Vision’ programme. (iv) Request by Cllr Talbot to consider PCSO funding Cllr Talbot advised that the previous Council had received a request for PCSO funding but that due to the short timeframe in which to respond, the matter had not been taken forward for consideration. The Council voted unanimously in favour of Cllr Talbot & Cllr Faccini looking at funding a PCSO for Hadleigh. Action: Cllr Talbot & Cllr Faccini Are To Look At Pcso Funding. (v) Lady Lane / Aldham Road proposed development – to consider a request to meet with the planning agent The Mayor advised that the Council had received a request from Artisan Planning & Property Services to meet with Hadleigh Town Council, with regards to bringing forward a scheme/application for residential re- development (probably for around 50 dwellings). The Council agreed to pass the request to the Planning Advisory Group. (vi) Request by Cllr Hinton to declare a Climate Change emergency. A draft proposal had been circulated to the Council, prior to the meeting. The Council unanimously agreed to declare a Climate Change emergency and to set up a Council and public working party to investigate ways to cut Hadleigh Town Council’s carbon and harmful emissions. The Council agreed to work towards making Suffolk carbon neutral by 2030, by working with Suffolk County Council and its partners. (vii) Request by Cllr Knock for the Council to agree to obtain a full market appraisal for the Cemetery Lodge. Cllr Knock is of the belief that Cemetery Lodge could bring in more income than at present and believes it is not reaching its full market potential. He asked that a full value appraisal be sought. The Clerk advised that when Cllr Knock had asked for the matter to be included on the agenda, she had contacted Lacy Scott & Knight, the agents who had undertaken the last appraisal on 16th December 2017. They were of the mind that it would not be necessary to carry out an appraisal at this time as there have been no substantial changes in property values since then. For accuracy, the Nationwide House Price Index (as quoted by Lacy Scott & Knight on 12th June 2019) shows as increase from the 4th 1⁄4 2017 to 1st 1⁄4 2019 of 1.04%. The Council voted 9 in favour, 2 against and 2 abstentions to obtaining a full market appraisal of Cemetery Lodge. Action: The Clerk Is To Seek A Full Market Appraisal Of Cemetery Lodge. (viii) Request by Cllr Bayliss to ask the Council to commit to asking Suffolk County Council to go ahead with a trial of the suggested Benton St. traffic management proposal. The Council voted unanimously in favour of supporting the Hadleigh Traffic Management Working Group to take this matter forward with Suffolk County Council. Cllr Fraser has offered to present the trialling options for traffic management in Benton Street. 40. Matters Raised By Members Cllr Knock asked who the beneficiary of the sand being excavated from the cemetery works was. 41. To Agree The Date, Time And Place Of The Next Town Council Meeting The next meeting of the Town Council will be held at The Dining Room, The Guildhall, Hadleigh on 18th July 2019. The meeting closed at 10.15pm

Extra fun with Sledges, Barrel Train, Maze and Tractor Ted too! Schools out and it’s time for some summer fun! Cool off with a free summer holiday swim Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils, in partnership with Abbeycroft Leisure and Everyone Active, are encouraging younger residents to get active over the summer holidays by offering free swims at their leisure centres. Children aged 16 and under across the districts, can cool off in the pool during the summer holidays for free during public swimming sessions at Abbeycroft Leisure and Everyone Active centres. The offer will be available at Abbeycroft Leisure centres from 20 July to 1 September inclusive, at: Kingfisher Leisure Centre, Sudbury Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre Users will need to sign up for an Abbeycroft Leisure Free Swimming Membership first in order to claim their free swim. Customers are advised to check the pool programme on their centre’s website for the times of free swimming sessions and terms and conditions. Cllr Derek Davis, Cabinet Member for Communities for Babergh District Council, said: “I’m pleased that we’re able to offer these free swims across Babergh, through our partner Abbeycroft Leisure. It’s important that children are given the opportunity to get active over the summer holidays and what better way to cool off from the summer heat than taking a dip in the pool. I hope the younger members of our community take this opportunity to have some fun while remaining active and healthy too.” Cllr Julie Flatman, Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing for Mid Suffolk District Council, said: “Swimming is great way for youngsters to unwind after the school term finishes, so it’s great that we’re able to give them the opportunity to swim for free at one of our two Everyone Active swimming pools in Mid Suffolk. Not only does this help to keep children in the district active over the holidays, but also enables families to swim together with the benefit of saving money too.” Tracey Loynds, Development Director at Abbeycroft Leisure, said: “We’re delighted to support Babergh with the free swimming initiatives, which encourages young people to be more active. We want to inspire a healthy you, so as part of this offer, you’ll need to sign up for our Free Swimming Membership. Bildeston Primary School Sport at Bildeston Primary We have been very busy with sporting events this month. We entered a year 3/4 and a year 5/6 team in the Elmsett Small Schools Football tournament and also went to the U11 Multi Skills event at Hadleigh High School. Other sporting events included the U11 cricket tournament at Hadleigh Cricket Club and we attended the U9 & U11 Quad kid’s festivals. Brazil was our chosen country for the parade as this is featured in our curriculum at the moment. Our U9 children attended a Dodgeball final this week held at the athletics arena in Bury St Edmunds. Our A team came second and for both teams there were many comments about their sportsmanship and attitude. Chance to Shine The Chance2Shine cricket team are visiting us weekly coaching our Year 3 & 4 children to improve their cricketing skills! Able Maths Two of our pupils were fortunate enough to be able to attend an able maths day at Chilton Community Primary School on Wednesday 19 June. During the workshop pupils were encouraged to work as investigators working together to solve interesting and meaningful problems. Father Day Lunches Our Father’s day lunches were held on Wednesday 20th & 21st June and were once again very successful! Over 180 meals were served across the two days and we would like to say a special thank you to our hardworking kitchen staff, and to our parents, who always help to support them. James Bond Day Our Year 5 children attended a James Bond day at Hadleigh High School where they conducted a series of investigations around the school in various departments, including Science Music and English, to determine what happened to James Bond!! The Goose Who Flew As part of the Doorstep Arts theatre programme, our KS1 children were lucky to be able to watch a performance of 'The Goose Who Flew' by leading children's theatre company, Half Moon Theatre. Hadleigh Steering Group The Hadleigh Steering Group met on Monday 8th July in the Social Room at the Hadleigh Pool & Leisure Centre. Having received apologies from some absent members the report of the previous meeting was approved. The Guest Speaker was Penny Cook, Chair of the Hadleigh Grand Feoffment. Penny explained the history of the Grand Feoffment from its early mediaeval beginnings through to the present day, including how today the Feoffment runs its 31 alms houses (a full report of Penny’s speech will be available at the next Steering group meeting). Hadleigh Town council. Cllr Cammack reported that the first full council had taken place on 20th June reviewing the formation of Committees and discussing inherited issues. A Climate Emergency was formally declared and a meeting was held on 3rd July to discuss the matter. Rather than a Civic Service the Mayor has decided to host other Town Mayors at the Hadleigh On Show event. The question on the lack of Planning Committee meetings was aired and it was confirmed that these would shortly recommence. Babergh District Council. Kathryn Grandon, Chair of Babergh District Council reported on the Draft Joint Local Plan. It will be open from July 22nd until the end of September, online, for public consultation. This is a working document for the next 18 years and will be updated on a regular basis. Infrastructure to cope with the rising population has been taken into account. Kathryn updated the meeting on the car park area at Station Road and the access to the Railway Walk. There is to be general improvement to the area making it more welcoming and user friendly. High Street flower baskets and containers are looking lovely. The Hadleigh May Show video has been well received and will be used to help promote next years event. The Town Guides thank the Corn Exchange Business Centre for enabling them to display the Cedric Morris Exhibition. Weekly Town tours are offered on Saturdays at 11a.m. from Magdalen Road Car Park. Hadleigh Legacy/Community Gardeners Jane Snowden has requested Babergh District Council to provide railings to discourage people from walking over the Cedric Morris garden. Tidy Town. In addition to litter picking sessions twice weekly, the volunteers have undertaken weeding streets and gutters, and spent considerable time clearing weeds from the High Street car park. From 1st January to 30th June this year, we have collected 95 sacks of rubbish, 39 sacks of recycling and 42 bags of green waste. We have been finding bags of bottles and other items left around the bottle bank in Magdalen Road car park when the bins are not full. If the bins are full there is a number to call and advise and even if the bins are full it is not acceptable to leave bottles etc. on the ground around the containers as this is classed as fly-tipping, as it is as if bags of rubbish are left beside waste bins. Perhaps people should be aware of this. Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group. SMS reminders are now being used by the G.P’s which has resulted in at 25% drop in missed appointments, however missed appointments to Nurses Clinics has increased. The PPG’S next main focus in line with the national initiative will be drug wastage and an ‘order only what you need’ drive. Hadleigh on Show to be held on Saturday 5th October in the Guildhall Complex, 10am to 4pm. Closing date for applications is 31th July but already the event is heavily booked. Participants will be contacted during August with further details. The next meeting will be held on Monday 12 August 2019, 4.15pm at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday July 8th 2019: Do you remember being at primary school doing music and movement? I was reminded of this at our July meeting when Karen Kenny got some of us flapping our arms like butterfly wings, while others were being tomatoes wafting their chemicals to protect a group of cabbages! Her very entertaining and knowledgeable talk was all about companion planting a traditional and organic way to control pests. There was a great deal of scientific information packed into the session, and I'll just highlight some which would be easy for everyone to adopt. Grow tomatoes in with brassicas to deter cabbage white butterflies, plant tagetes minuta - their roots have a chemical which seeks out ground elder, tansy discourages ants and nasturtiums have a high nectar content which attracts blackfly. We know that it is important to attract pollinators to the garden, hoverflies, lacewings, ladybirds and blue tits all eat aphids, plants like nettles and poached egg plant, sweet peas, lemon balm and buddleia are all good for attracting these creatures. Try also find a way of providing water in the garden, even in a small way for the same reason, and hopefully, you will encourage a little army of garden helpers! So this morning when I found whitefly on one of my pepper plants in the greenhouse, instead of a quick spray with a soapy solution I have moved it outside hoping that when I look again something will have dealt with them...........! It was nice also to welcome some new visitors to the club this month, and we hope we will see them again soon. The plant stall was heaving with bargains, most of which had disappeared by the end of the evening, and congratulations to our chairman Dave for winning the rose competition! Monday August 13th 2019: This month our speaker will be Dan Wheals who is coming to talk about growing and using medicinal herbs for health - a subject high on the agenda at the moment. The meeting starts at 7.30pm in Hadleigh Town Hall. The entrance is £4 for visitors and £2 for members to include refreshments, there will be a raffle and plants for sale. The Brett Valley Collective The Brett Valley Collective were overjoyed recently to finally share their self penned show “Office Clippings,” with the local community. The show, set in the fictitious Hadleigh Paperclip Company, was the culmination of a number of social get togethers, collaborative writing and improvisation workshops. Both nights at Layham Village Hall were sold out and audience members were encouraging and even a bit raucous! (Yes, we mean you Julie Philips!). The performance raised 700.00 for Suffolk Artlink, who are a participatory arts charity set up to support marginalised groups to have access to creativity in various forms. The Collective are hugely grateful to everyone who supported the event in every way by donating raffle prizes, giving their time, making delicious cakes and by supporting the show itself. Special thanks to Barbara and the team at The Thrift Shop for box office duties and to Stuart Service for being our biggest champion. It was a real team effort and the collective are hugely encouraged by the all the lovely feedback they received. Using drama and creativity to fundraise has been a hugely positive experience Watch this space for further events. Down to Earth ...with Dave Our visit to Chelsworth open gardens was, as usual, a very enjoyable day, this is surely one of the most attractive little villages in Suffolk. There were twenty six gardens open this year which is the most ever. Luckily the gardens are quite near to each other so we did manage to visit most of them but returned home rather weary. No two years are the same on the allotment, last year the onions were the best ever but this year they have been very poor. Yet, on neighbouring plots, there are rows of prize winning onions, so it can't be blamed on the weather. The garlic planted right next to them have done really well and we have enough to last us right through the winter. There has been plenty of soft fruit this year with gooseberry fool and raspberry jam just some of the delicious items coming out of the kitchen, alas the jam has too much sugar in it for me. Now is a good time to give any hedges a bit of a trim as they can begin to look a little untidy. On a recent visit to a friend's garden we much admired an hydrangea called 'Annabelle', this has a most delicate creamy white flower. No sooner had we shown an interest than out came the secateurs, some non flowering shoots were found and snipped off. These were promptly taken home, trimmed to a couple of inches, placed in small pots with some gritty compost, watered and covered over. With luck we shall have some new plants of our own to go with the more common pink ones that we have. The same can be done at this time of year with fuchsias, pelargoniums, salvias etc. The sweet pea flowers must be picked daily or else they will set seed, thinking that their work is done. If the weather is dry it pays to raise the height of the mower blades a little, any mowings should be left on the grass as a mulch, over time they will be absorbed into the lawn, this will improve the quality of the grass and, of course, you don't have the problem of disposing of the cuttings. If you get any worm casts on the lawn just brush them about with a broom, if you have the patience these worm casts are excellent potting compost, as are mole hills. Incidentally don't waste precious water on the lawn , it may go brown in the sun but it will soon green up. Keep dead heading every day if possible, this helps keep the borders tidy, prevents the plants wasting energy producing seed and encourages them to flower again. Try to spend ten minutes a day doing this, it is surprising what you see when going round the garden with the secateurs and a little pot. That's all for this time, Dave

Hadleigh & District Flower Club The Charity chosen by the Club this year was The Motor Neurone Disease Association. Chris the Chairman is shown in the picture presenting a cheque for £500.00 to Andrew Diss, who was accompanied by his daughter Amy and son Adam. Andrew gave a short talk about the sad and heartbreaking time they had when his wife Diane was diagnosed with MND and the support they received from MNDA. He thanked the club. Chris then introduced and welcomed our Demonstrator for the night, Lionel Clarke from Braintree. His title was “Swan Song”. As the chairman of Eastern England, he is a demonstrator of great experience and it showed in his lovely flowers and great knowledge of garden plants and materials. He is now winding down to retire from demonstrating and will then just enjoy arranging and judging flowers. We wish you all the best Lionel. Please come and join us at Hadleigh United Reformed Church at 7.30pm for our next meeting on September 10th when Alan Smith from Ipswich will be our Demonstrator.

Even if you never open them, once you leave a pharmacy your medicines cannot be recycled or used by anyone else. This means that any you return are destroyed. Before heading to the pharmacy, take a look in your medicine cabinet to see what you actually need. You may have ordered extra on a repeat prescription last time and have forgotten. If your GP prescribes medication for you, make sure you are taking it correctly. Unused or misused medications such as antibiotics can lead to worsening health conditions and more treatments. By doing your part and only ordering what you need you are helping to reduce the cost of wasted medicines, which means these savings could be put towards other health services. Only order the medicines that you need • When re-ordering your medication, please allow 2 working days for your prescription to be processed before you come to collect or expect delivery. Don’t run out by leaving it too late! • Please let your GP know if you’ve stopped taking any of your medicines • Check what medicines you still have at home before re-ordering • Discuss your medication with your GP or Pharmacist on a regular basis • Think carefully before ticking all the boxes on your repeat prescription forms and only tick those that you really need. It happens every year: WHAT? ONLY 12 WEEKS TO CHRISTMAS? WHY OH WHY DID I BATHE IN PROSECCO ALL SUMMER LONG? HOW WILL I FIT INTO MY PARTY DRESS? I AM GOING ON A DIET! Panic not everybody. Issue 53 (August-September 2019) Jeff Ward of Colchester begins a new series entitled ‘Stories from the War Memorials’. As one of the contributors to the monthly reports in Hadleigh Community News concerning events from the First World War (1914-1918), Jeff’s research uncovered so much information concerning combatants that he is now writing more-detailed biographies of those who died in the conflict, starting with the Driver brothers of George Street. The series ‘When Hadleigh was a borough 400 years ago’ come to an end with the of the character in 1685. Briefly, the mayor and alderman as governors of the town became confused as to whom they were supposed to pay the profits of the markets. Apparently, both the church and the poor were meant to benefit from this charity (which was incorrectly explained in matters arising from Hadleigh Town Council’s meeting reported in Hadleigh Community News, June 2019). This confusion and poor record keeping would seem to have been the corporation’s downfall. ‘On the edge’ looks at five landscape features along Hadleigh’s northern parish boundary, which stretches for ten miles from Hadleigh Heath in the west to Wolves Wood in the east. The first area is the Herst, where there was once charity land. Moving eastwards, Cosford was an important crossing point on the river Brett in Anglo-Saxon times when it gave its name to the administrative district between parish and county in which Hadleigh lay until 1894. The former glebe farmlands of Hadleigh’s rector are identified, the naming of Lady Lane is discussed and finally, Wolves Wood is shown to be two ancient woodlands, with the part in Hadleigh called Southall Wood. From The Times cones the story of the man who did not want to be rector of Hadleigh; the phot feature ‘Round the back’ has East House as its subject; and there are ;’Two views of High Street’ to compare in the first half of the 20th century. If you live in an older property and the title deeds do not go back that far, do not give up searching for the answers to the question ‘Who’s been living in my house?’ Peter Preston of Angle Street knew that his relations were owners back into the 19th century and has a wonderful picture of the Suttle family about 1900 (which appears on the back cover) but that was all. Census returns, rate books, newspapers, wills, parish registers and manorial records have allowed a chronology to be created starting in 1661. However, the building itself has to be considered: its architectural style and decoration takes the story as far back as the year 1500! Come And Sing With Hadleigh Choral Society – Open Rehearsal! Hadleigh Choral Society is a Choir of about 90 enthusiastic voices who love performing great choral works in traditional form, accompanied by a full orchestra and with young professional soloists. This autumn we will be presenting Mendelssohn’s Elijah in St Mary’s Church on Saturday 23 November. To do justice to this great Oratorio we would like extra singers to join us, so we are planning an OPEN REHEARSAL AFTERNOON on Saturday 7 September in the Ansell Centre in Hadleigh, beginning at 2.15pm. If you’ve been a singer in the past and would like to experience the joy of singing again, or if you sing in another choir and would like to join us for a ‘one-off’ season, or if you’ve heard us perform and would like to ‘give it a go’ come along on the 7th and try us out! Some ability to read music is preferable, but we are an un-auditioned choir and commitment and practise are as important to our performance as technical ability! We will explore the Work through listening to CDs, some historical background, and plenty of lusty singing of the amazing choruses for which Elijah is famous. The rehearsal will be led by our musical director, Chris Phelps. The session is completely free and we will break for tea and cake half-way through the afternoon. The new term for Hadleigh Choral Society starts on Tuesday 3 September at 7.30 pm in the Ansell Centre. July’s good Samaritan This is by way of a BIG thank you to the lady parked outside the Co-op on the evening of the 1st July at 6.00pm, who assisted me in retrieving my parcel that had spilled onto the pavement outside Avis’s. In trying to collect the items, then found I was unable to gain my feet again. While trying to sort the problem out ‘A Shining Angel Appeared’. The 2019 Parish Council The two newly co-opted councillors, Bill Paton and Tony Stenning joined the council for their first meeting on Wednesday 26 June and Charlotte Britton has taken over as Chair.

Parish Council The main matters discussed during the meeting of Wednesday 26 June were: The Chair (Charlotte Brotton) welcomed Bill Paton and Tony Stenning to their first meeting, having been co-opted at the Extraordinary Meeting held on 13 June 2019. The Clerk confirmed that thank-you cards had been sent to Ron Gunn and Steve Laing, as proposed by the outgoing Chairman, Michael Woods – Ron and Steve had retired at the last election. • District Council report Councillor Ward said he was grateful for the Government’s support to help rough sleepers. The numbers were relatively low in Babergh’s urban areas, but the funding would enable early intervention. Babergh and Mid Suffolk had commissioned a comprehensive housing satisfaction survey, the first such in five years. The new draft Local Plan wold be out for consultation from 22 July until 30 September. In response to a question about the new Cabinet, JW explained that the role of Chairman was largely ceremonial, although the Chairman controlled the Council meetings; Leader was a political role. All meetings were now live streamed on YouTube and recordings were available after meetings. • County Council report Cllr Jones said work had just started on a boundary review. In response to a question, he said SCC was the third largest landowner in the county mainly because it owned county farmlands, which provided a way for young farmers to enter the farming industry; in addition, some land could potentially be made available for housing. • Financial matters The internal audit had been completed and the Clerk had circulated the report to councillors; SALC’s recommendations would be noted at the July meeting. Sections 1 (Governance Statement) and 2 (Accounting Statements) of the Annual Return were approved and signed by the Chairman and Clerk/RFO. • Village Review update The guiding principles for the Village Review working group were noted. The main issue arising from the review was speeding. It was agreed that CB agreed that that a working group should be set up to prepare an options paper and bring this to the next full Council meeting; all options should be considered, along with costs. • SCC Community Self-Help Scheme The scheme had been developed in partnership with town and parishes across Suffolk. Highways had committed £100,000 in its first year to help fund training, personal protective clothing and tools. Councillors had several concerns, including: • Insurance • Funding • Health & Safety • What could be done as in the past (eg litter picks) and what would change There would be a full discussion about the scheme at the July meeting and a list of queries and concerns would be sent to SCC. • Footpath A parishioner had emailed the Clerk about the current state of a footpath in the village, which was heavily overgrown and almost impassable. The PC would contact the landowner. • Bin collection days The Clerk had received an email from Babergh to say the collection day for some households would be changing in July. However, this would not apply to all households – those who would be affected would receive a letter in early July. It’s all change at Layham Parish Council Two long-serving members of Layham Parish Council stood down in May. Ron Gunn and Steve Laing have both served as counsellors since 2011 with Ron taking responsibility for publically owned land and property and Steve taking a special interest in highways and footpaths. Many of you will have seen Ron about the village giving his time readily to, for example, cut hedges back; repair notice boards and seats; repaint telephone boxes; clean the war memorial; look after the re-cycling site...his contributions have been invaluable and the members of the Parish Council will miss his readiness to volunteer for so many practical tasks. He will continue to help out by looking after the allotments. Steve has been an enthusiastic campaigner for road improvements – his persistence has helped us to achieve, amongst other things, improved signage including the 30 and 40mph signs on the B1070. His greatest asset to the council has been the many contacts he has developed over the years – in his business life he gets to know a lot of ‘useful’ people and he has often, through such contacts, helped us to get things done. A recent example has been the financial support for the fourth defibrillator. Thank you both for the time and effort you have given. 38

Layham’s fourth defibrillator It has taken a long time to be completed but, at last, Layham Parish Council’s fourth defibrillator is installed and available for use. It is mounted on a purpose-built oak frame and is beside the walk way between numbers 29 and 30 Brett Green. Unlike the other three defibrillators this one did not have an obvious home, nor a ready supply of electricity – thus costs have been much higher. We are grateful for financial donations, totalling £2,900, from Layham Queen’s Head Sports and Social Club, Brett Valley Freemasons’ Lodge No 9479, our County Councillor’s (Gordon Jones) Locality Fund, Hadleigh Health Centre and Hadleigh Thrift Shop. We are also grateful to volunteers Robert Keeble who designed the frame, Neil Riches who built it and Robert Sargeant (R.M.Sargeant Landscaping and Fencing) who put it in place. Make sure you know exactly where all four defibrillators are sited – just in case you are called upon to help someone with cardiac arrest. A reminder – the other three defibrillators are in the telephone box outside the Queen’s Head; on the car park side wall of the Marquis main building; in the telephone box in front of 6 Upper Street. We must be one of the leading providers of this service in Suffolk per head of population i.e. one per 60 homes. We should be very proud. Put it in your diary and get used to calling round.
Above the Parapet County Council Report - Cllr Mick Fraser Suffolk County Council to reduce Bus Subsidies Why is this happening? - Due to the continual reduction of the Central Government grant, a decision was taken by Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet in February 2019 to save a further ÂŁ13m from the Council’s budget. This will include ÂŁ340,000 from the authority’s passenger transport budget. Therefore, of the 61 bus routes subsidised by public money, 23 of these will have their public funding removed. This does not mean that these services will necessarily end, just that public funding is no longer affordable. How will this affect Hadleigh? - This will have a significant effect on Hadleigh’s bus services, where 6 routes will have their subsidies removed. It will also impact on the operations of Hadleigh Community Transport Group (HCTGp) who operate the routes 90, 796, and 461 as well as the once-weekly No120 route connecting Wattfield to Ipswich. The other routes to lose funding, operated by other bus companies, are: the 971, 94, and 112. A full list of the affected routes has been published on Suffolk County Council’s website www.suffolkonboard.com How did Suffolk County Council formulate their decision? - To identify and agree how these savings should be made to funding services, SCC set up a cross-party policy development panel. A fair and thorough set of criteria was adopted, which included: passenger numbers; subsidy per single ticket; integration with other services; the number of entitled students using a service; and the percentage of journeys made by concessionary pass holders. By these criteria, the routes 90 and 796 were the lowest two scoring routes I’m afraid. What next - SCC Transport officers have met with representatives from Suffolk’s bus operators to see whether they can run a number of bus services without public subsidy. Following conversations with bus operators and partners, SCC will review the situation at the end of July 2019 before determining next steps. The council aims to have operators taking on these services on a commercial basis from the end of October 2019. I very much hope that many of our routes can continue and I will do what I can to secure ongoing support for them. I had previously persuaded SCC to continue funding our services when they were last threatened in 2018. Councillor Mary Evans, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Rural Issues said: “We need to ensure we spend public money effectively. In reviewing these services against our new funding criteria, we have had to make tough decisions. However, the implementation of the new criteria has enabled these decisions to be made in a robust and transparent way and ensures we consider key measures before making tough calls. We are committed to working with bus operators and partners to explore other sources of funding to support these services once SCC funding ceases. We are also open to conversations with community groups and partners to see if local solutions can be developed. I recognise the importance of passenger transport and I remain committed to ensuring that Suffolk’s residents have access to it.â€? Ipswich Northern Route Consultation In order to support long term growth in Suffolk, whilst supporting existing communities, residents and businesses, consideration must be given to the infrastructure that may be needed. Hence why this project for a new Ipswich Northern Route is necessary. It sets out to improve existing journeys, support the local economy, and provide capacity for future growth. The project will enhance Suffolk as a great place to do business and an attractive place for people to live. In 2016 an initial study was undertaken to look at transport conditions across the wider Ipswich area, both now and in the future. This work showed that the road network suffers from frequent and severe delays constraining growth and reducing productivity. The work highlighted issues of congestion on the A14, problems relating to the Orwell Bridge crossing and traffic in Ipswich. These issues impact on nationally important assets such as the Port of Felixstowe. SCC is working together with the county’s District Councils and Ipswich Borough Council to explore options to create a new road to the north of Ipswich. Such a road would enable better journeys across Suffolk as well as enable future economic growth. Three potential routes have been identified for a new east/west link between the A12 and A14 corridors: an inner corridor from Martlesham to Claydon; a middle corridor from Woodbridge to Claydon; and an outer corridor from Melton to the A140 near Needham Market. A public consultation has started and will run until 13th September 2019. This first step in the process to present the emerging options will allow members of the community to comment on the project. Local men from Hadleigh complete UK Coast to Coast walk for charity Four local men from Hadleigh, affectionately known as the Four Old Men of Hadleigh, were welcomed home after completing the gruelling 192 mile Coast to Coast walk across England, in aid of Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance. Jim Sephton, Jimmy Wilding, Anthony Foster and Richard Groom, embarked on an epic walk on 17 June which took them just 12 days. The Coast to Coast walk is normally started from St Bees on the Cumbrian coast and finishes at Robin Hood's Bay on the North Yorkshire coast, passing through the National Parks of the Lake District, Pennines, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors. Jimmy is very well known in Hadleigh and many people told him they would sponsor the group - so it was a natural decision to raise funds for Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance, as Jimmy’s wife is living with dementia. The group set off and kept local people informed of their progress via daily updates on social media, which many people in Hadleigh and beyond looked forward to. Back home in Hadleigh, Patricia Simmonds and friends started knitting forget me nots, which many local residents now proudly wear as a sign of support for the walkers. Jimmy said “We drove up to Kirby Stephens, left the car there and on Fathers day we were driven to St Bees to start the walk. Imagine Jim’s surprise when he was greeted by his son Ian and wife Sam, who had driven up from Manchester to see us off.” “We started the walk in pouring rain but the weather cleared to sunshine and we arrived at our Bed & Breakfast about 6pm. #Day1Done. Anthony, #I can sleep anywhere continues “The next day we stopped at the Black Sail Youth Hostel and were greeted by “You must be the four old men from Hadleigh” the power of Facebook! We then had the steepest ascent of the whole walk up Loft Beck. The wind was gusting Gale Force and it was really difficult to keep our balance. The paths are steep and very rough under foot and every footstep had to be measured.” Richard continued the traveller's tails “On day three Anthony slipped on a scramble up to Greenup Edge and was lucky not to have been killed! He was very badly bruised and showed amazing courage and determination to carry on. We were now in a routine walking from 8.15 to 18.30 each day and completed the Lake District part of the walk without further incident. We were having dinner in Shap when I collapsed. The ambulance people were brilliant and took me to hospital in Carlise. I am pleased to report that I have made a good recovery. But with a very heavy heart I set off home, not on foot I may add! My Coast 2 Coast dream being fulfilled by my amazing buddies.” Jimmy continues “with just two glorious days to finish our adventures we were delighted to be welcomed by Anthony’s cousin and Jimmy’s cousin as we entered Robn Hood Bay, a welcome site at the end of our epic journey." Jimmy, Jim, Richard and Anthony met some amazing people along the way, including a team of Sunderland supports that went wild when they spotted Jimmy’s Ipswich Town Football Shirt. To date thanks to the generosity of so many people Our Four Old Men from Hadleigh have raised around £4,000. The original target was £1,000! The Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance is working with the community to raise awareness and understanding to dementia, making our wonderful town of Hadleigh a dementia friendly community. Tracey Loynds, HDAA said “Four old Men from Hadleigh realised a dream to walk the Coast 2 Coast in just 12 days the funds so kindly donated will go towards funding our activities facilitator for another year” Cllr Kathryn Grandon, Chairman of Babergh District Council, said: “It’s amazing to hear about the journey, generosity and selflessness of these special members of our community and I’d encourage anyone who can to come and hear their story on 6 September at St Mary’s Church. “The money raised for the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance will go a really long way in continuing to make Hadleigh a dementia friendly community.” The four old men from Hadleigh invite you to join them for an Evening to hear their story, enjoy a glass of wine an to celebrate the amazing community that we live in. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Did I mention we’d been going 30 years here at Shelley? The Chairman and Trustees decided to have a party (am I surprised?) to celebrate this milestone, and tried to invite as many past supporters and workers as could be found. Two of our founder members, Mike and Jane Crowe, very kindly offered their garden for the venue at the end of term. The rain held off, the garden looked amazing, and the food and drink flowed. For once, I’m told, this was not a fundraiser! No raffle, no hassle, just a wonderful opportunity to come together and enjoy themselves for the price of a ticket. Kizzy and Sarah played beautiful music to enhance the atmosphere. As usual the relaxed ambience wasn’t achieved without a massive amount of work by a very few people, all of whom deserve a huge round of applause. The real ‘piece de la resistance’ was the system of ramps created especially for our wheel chair users to access the garden up two flights of steps. My photos show Margaret inspecting the work before guests arrived, and then supervising their ascent! I wasn’t installed when the Centre first opened, and the site was quite bare when it all began. Scrapbook photos show how the place has evolved and settled in to the lovely venue it is now. I do sometimes wish I could get outside and see more than just the yard, then I realise how lucky I am to do the job I do with the riders who come to me. The DIY Deli Salt Beef Salt beef is a great favourite in sandwiches. Typically, the cut of beef used commercially is brisket, but we have chosen silverside as it is more forgiving if you don’t get the cooking quite right and produces a nicer product. Like pastrami the cure involves the use of sodium nitrite which is widely used to protect the meat from the effects of harmful bacteria; it also fixes the red colouring matter in the cured meat to give it that attractive pink colouration. The dosage of this is critical: too little and you run the risk of bacterial infection; too much is poisonous. Some schools recommend the use of celery salt instead; this has a naturally produced amount of sodium nitrite, but there is no way of knowing how much; for this reason, we don’t subscribe to that “au naturelle” idealism. The synthesised product Prague powder # 1 is table salt with 6.25% sodium nitrite; it is also marketed as pink salt or Instacure. They are all chemically the same. Shopping Look for a joint with a fairly flat profile; if you opt for brisket this comes as standard, but it is quite normal to find a similar cut of silverside; you will need around 1 Kg Essential equipment 1. A ceramic, glass or food grade plastic container that can be set aside for a week or so, just big enough to hold the meat without touching the sides and at least 50mm deeper than the height of the joint 2. A pointed knife with a keen (not serrated) edge 3. A pestle and mortar 4. Scales: a set accurate to 0.1 gm &capable of weighing less than 1gm and an everyday set 5. A glass paperweight 6. A sharp carving knife or (ideally) meat slicer Ingredients, based on 1 kg (trimmed weight) of beef; pro rata according to size For the cure: 300g Sea salt, 2.5g Prague powder #1, 200g Soft brown sugar, 2g Juniper berries, 2g Freshly ground black pepper, 2 Bay leaves, 2 cloves Garlic, 1 Star anise, 2 litres Water. For the stock: 1 Carrot, 2 Shallots, 1 stick Celery, 1 clove Garlic, 1 Star anise, 1 Bay leaf, 2 tips, around 6” long Sage, Around 1 litre Water. Method 1. Trim the meat of all excess fat and any sinew that might be on the surface; Weigh the trimmed joint to determine the amount of each ingredient in the cure; while the others are not critical the Prague powder is – 2.5 g per kilo. Don’t waste the fat; it will make perfectly good beef dripping next time your oven is on. 2. Dissolve the salt, sugar and Prague powder in the water, stirring vigorously; you will need to heat (not boil) it to speed up the process; add the crushed garlic and bay leaves. 3. Grind the juniper berries, pepper and star anise in the pestle & mortar & add to the hot brine; allow to cool to room temperature before transferring to the fridge to cool to 4-5℃. 4. Place the meat on a board with the cut end topmost; using a vertical motion parallel to the grain pierce the meat until the point of the knife contacts the board, at one-inch intervals; turn over and repeat on the other side; this will ensure even penetration of the cure 5. Place the meat into the selected container and add the (now cold) brine; the meat will be slightly buoyant; weigh it down with the paperweight, placed on a plate or saucer if necessary; if it is not covered add enough cold water to cover by ¼ inch; it is critical that none is exposed to the air. 6. Cure in the fridge for around 5-10 days depending on size, turning daily; the cure is complete when the pink colouration runs through to the centre of the meat; stretching it laterally will expose the centre where it has been slit. 7. Once cured remove the meat & rinse under cold running water to remove the dry ingredients of the cure from the surface; soak in cold water for 3 hours; remove, pat dry & place in the fridge. 8. To make the stock chop the carrots celery and garlic, halve the shallots lengthwise. Add to the water together with the remaining ingredients (left whole); bring to the boil & simmer for around 10 minutes. 9. Add the cured meat & continue to simmer gently for 1-3 hours, testing frequently with a skewer to ensure that the meat is moist and tender; top up with warm water if the meat is in danger of becoming exposed. To serve Serve hot with boiled new potatoes & sauerkraut or French beans; or use it cold in sandwiches or with salad as a starter; 1 kg uncooked weight serves 12 as a starter. If serving cold, cover the meat, once cooked, with crumpled greaseproof paper weighed down with a plate, ensuring that the whole is under the surface; if necessary, weigh the plate down with the glass paperweight. Allow to cool to room temperature; take out the meat & pat dry with a kitchen towel. Slice all of it thinly at right angles to the grain, & wrap tightly in convenient packs using cling film, or ideally, vacuum pack it. Storage The sliced product will keep in the fridge for up to a week; in its sliced form it will keep in the freezer for 6 months, provided it is tightly wrapped; loosely wrapped it will tend to dry out in the freezer. 42

Dear Sir, Trespassing at Hadleigh Hall, Pound Lane. Unfortunately since the new McCarthy and stone development is being built, a number of the public have been naive and ignored our one of many private property signs. Consequently because of this we feel as though we have lost all privacy in our own garden. On several of occasions when politely asked to leave the grounds we have had verbal abuse as a response. A little tip... summer is coming, so if you would like to see the new development go take a nice stroll down the river walk where it’s open to the general public but don’t invade someone’s space and privacy. After all, what you need is to question yourself ‘would you like strangers in your garden’?! Gary Cutt
Dear Sir, As a woman who is unable to have children, I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to two lovely mums who allowed me to share the joy of their little ones. In today’s often scary and cynical world, it would be easy for parents to be overly protective of their children when it comes to social interaction with strangers, but in the Hadleigh Health Centre, a lovely mum allowed her small infant to curl its tiny hand around my finger. And then there was the equally lovely lady who smiled when I tickled her baby’s toes at the till as she packed her shopping. Neither of you may ever get to read this letter, but if you do, I really want you to appreciate how much joy you brought into my life. Sarah Thompson
Hadleigh and District Probus Club Hadleigh and District Probus’s Summer Outing this year was a trip down the lower reaches of the River Stour from Dedham to Flatford and back, meandering down the river on two silent electric boats owned by the River Stour Trust. The party was limited to 18 people, the maximum allowed on the two boats. On a beautiful sunny day, Tuesday 2nd July, we departed at 11.00am drifting silently along the river at a maximum of 5mph between green open fields, passing swans with their signets and cows watching us from the banks, while the boat captains guided the crafts round the sandbanks of the shallow river. We arrived at Flatford half an hour later, stopping there for 30 minutes, just time for some to walk down to the mill and Willy Lot’s Cottage, or to look at the John Constable exhibition, or have a cup of tea or something called coffee in the Bridge Cottage tea room which overlooks the river, before boarding the boats for the return trip back long the river alive with blue dragonflies darting across the surface to an excellent lunch at the Boathouse Restaurant in Dedham. Our thanks to the River Stour Trust and their volunteer staff for an excellent river trip. Apart from outings like this and a couple of other events to which ladies and friends are invited, Hadleigh and District Probus mens’ club meets for lunch on the third Wednesday of each month in the rear bar of ‘The George’ in Hadleigh. If you are a retired professional or businessman, why not come along and join us and meet other retired members living in and around Hadleigh? By the time you read this Bowza and Bondi the jackdaw will have been in a national magazine “Real People”. The story of Bowza finding a baby jackdaw in the road outside Huffers Café in High Street, Hadleigh has been in the East Anglian and national news papers including The Sun, The Mail, The Metro and more, adding to the story of him saving a oap's life, being one of a special few to be awarded a PDSA Commendation, then making history by being the first ever dog to walk out Ipswich Town football team. Now Bowza and his best friend Kaz (A Bedlington / Lercher) have a new friend, Bondi the Jackdaw. Bondi flies free in the house and in the garden, comes back when I call. Bondi keeps Bowza and Kaz in order by giving them a peck on the nose. Bondi will pull at their tails - Bowza does not mind but Kaz does not like her tail being pulled too much! Bowza was also on the channel five TV show “Do The Right Thing” with Eammon Holmes and Ruth Langsford and awarded Dog Of The Year trophy by Eammon. If you see Bowza, Kaz or even Bondi sitting on my shoulder, please say Hello.
Pause For Thought Who would not love to live in such a property? Very spacious, set in rolling countryside, with a heated pool. The owners searched for years before finally buying their dream property. The renovations were carried out expertly. To offer a family a free holiday while they themselves were away was kind and generous. No doubt the owners relaxed in the knowledge their home was in safe hands. Imagine their thoughts as they returned home to find the oven left on; and the front door wide open. Clearly, the housesitting holiday makers were not as careful with the executive home as was hoped. The guests had actually left days before the owners returned. The guests were careless with all that had been entrusted to their care, and made light of the generosity shown them. I think that is often how we treat God. After all, He made this beautiful world that we so easily spoil and take for granted. Even worse, we can ignore the incredibly generous and selfless sacrifice Jesus completed for us by dying on the Cross. He chose to die not for Himself, but for us, in order to make it possible for us to be forgiven and free in this life and especially in the next. We just need to admit our need of God’s amazing gift of forgiveness and eternal life. “For God so loved the world, He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3.16 (Bible)

Big news for our Musical Director, Sarah Gallop, who won an international teacher of the week award. The submission described her as ‘an inspirational musician’ as well as being ‘cheeky, chirpy and full of infectious enthusiasm’. Sorry Sarah, what can I say but I think we can all recognise you in there! Now be honest, when was the last time Batman, James Bond, the Proclaimers, Dustin Hoffman, Take That, Michael Caine, Meryl Streep, PT Barnum, and the Lion King all turned up in Hadleigh on a Saturday evening? Well, they did and the 150 people who came to hear us at the United Reformed Church said you missed a great concert of moving, emotional and rousing movie songs. The audience saved the world (again) with James Bond, loved Graham Holmes’ amazing piano solo, walked 500 miles with the Proclaimers, prowled through Shadowland with the Lion King, and fought off 4000 Zulu warriors with the Men of Harlech which I thought was very brave of them considering. And all generously helped to raise money for the Bumblebee Charity in support of their valuable work with children who have a range of brain and neurological issues. Before you read this we’ll have finished our summer concerts, singing at Layham to help raise money for St Andrew’s Church. Our next big concert will be on 7 December 2019 at the United Reformed Church in Hadleigh. Where does that dog get his airs and graces? Kenny asked me to write this month’s news because he is “indisposed” with a bad leg. Anyone would think he had run the Nayland10K! Over 900 people did take part and we send them and the organisers a a great big THANK YOU. By mid July over £1600 was raised for SESAW via JustGiving to help care for the many animals at the Sanctuary. We are also grateful to employees from local companies who helped prepare for our July Open Day. We welcome volunteers thoughout the year, to help care for the animals or fundraise. If you would like to join our fantastic team please leave a message on the answerphone. Everyone has something to offer, no special skills required except, perhaps, a sense of humour! The hedgehogs that Mother nursed through the winter have been safely released. Dubbed the Gardener’s friend, they eat lots of pesky bugs but many die crossing the road in their search for food. Providing cat or dog food (WITHOUT fish) or dry hedgehog food from pet shops plus water each day may encourage them to stay put. Cover ponds or create a means of escape from the water, check bonfires before lighting and avoid using slug pellets, It’s dinner time so I’m off to the kitchen to see if Kenny has found his feet. Learning to resolve guilt and regret Guilt and regret often preoccupy the bereaved and can result in feelings of inner conflict, sadness, anger, shame, selfblame and depression. General wellbeing may even be compromised if we do not find a way of resolving such feelings. How can we help? For us the key is through understanding and forgiveness. In our groups we try to help our members recognise and understand that much of the guilt experienced is based on how we think we should behave and is often quite judgemental and self-punishing. Our reactions can also be laden with overly high expectations which do not take into account the emotional and distressful situation we may have been in at the time. Regret may not be so harsh but is nonetheless bothersome if it eats away at us. If this blog is of interest to you in connection with a bereavement, be it recent or further back in time then why not come and join a Suffolk Bereavement Support group? We are here to help! Our afternoon group is held in central Hadleigh on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 1.30pm-3.00pm and our Capel St. Mary group meets in the early evening on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 6.30pm-8.00pm. Each meeting finishes with refreshments and informal chat. Hadleigh Bowling Club Congratulations to Christine Woollard and Di Miller for winning the Suffolk Ladies County Pairs competition! Di Miller also won her first game in the Suffolk Champion of Champions. And the success continues as Hadleigh ladies are progressing well in their county games. So where are the men, you rightly ask? Well thank you for asking – Mick Barrand and Doug Doust have won through to the semifinals of the Federation Senior Pairs, and Bob Fletcher plus Mick Barrand are both in the finals of the Federation Veterans Singles. In the Samford Mixed Pairs, Peggy Hogsden and David Kemp won their first round match and David Kemp has won his first round in the Samford two-wood singles. Our teams in the various Suffolk leagues are having a more mixed time so moving quickly on..... In the internal competitions the Walter Wright Cup was won by Paul Ashton, Lorna Finch and Maria Barrand, while Mel and Clive Joseph won the three wood pairs. A lot of new members have joined this year and the club has enhanced the advice and support for them with individual mentors and expert coaching. Socially the club is as busy as ever, with monthly lunches, pie and quiz nights with some very specialist questions about dog breeds and suchlike (yes, obviously I was robbed again), and buffets and BBQs lined up through to September. They say New York never sleeps but they should really try Hadleigh Bowling Club which was established in 1754 so also 22 years older than American independence. I think we win!

Lady Captain’s Day at Stoke International Travel was the theme that Diana Harris chose for her Captain’s Day last week at Stoke by Nayland GC and her Lady Members certainly rose to the occasion. They turned out to greet her arrival in her decorated buggy in a variety of outfits from Grass Skirts and Leis through Airport Ground Staff to Bears from Peru! A relaxed game of fourball stableford, best two scores to count, was played in glorious sunshine interrupted only by Pimms and snacks served at the half-way hut by Diana and her husband, David. The winning team of Sue Gregory, Debbie Howlett, Petra Byatt and Corinne Jackson took the Captain’s prize with a score of 87 points but win or lose everyone enjoyed a grand day including Diana herself!
Ansell Memories CafĂŠ This month we would like to say a big “THANK YOUâ€? to Jackie Bateman, who has made us some beautiful aprons for us to wear when doing painting and craft work. Each apron is individual with different animals appliqued on to the pockets. They even have extra long ties so we can tie them at the front instead of struggling to tie at the back. Without people like Jackie and all our wonderful volunteers, the Memories CafĂŠ would not be able to run. Do come and join us on a Thursday for companionship, laughter and support as well as the opportunity to take part in various activities and enjoy a tasty lunch. Joining the already signed Matt Paine, Josh Cheetham & Wayne Blackman are Kye Ruel who has vast experience at higher league levels having played at Felixstowe & Walton last season he is joined by striker Joel Glover who was with Great Yarmouth last season also signing is 17 year old ex Needham Market Academy player Dan Hayes who will be eligible to play for our Under 18's , Reserves and First Team and lastly after leaving the club in March Charlie Howlett returns from Ipswich Wanderers Pre-season Friendlies have seen a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Essex Senior League outfit Saffron Walden Town Kyron Andrews our scorer, this match was followed by an way trip to Debenham L.C who like Saffron Walden were strong opponents we ran out 3-0 winners with goals from two Joel Glover the other by Kieran Turner. Hadleigh CC 1st XI 2019 What a staggering, unbelievable game it was. It had everything – cliffhanging drama, run-outs, and THAT over. It was a real “where were you?” moment. But enough about the 1st XI’s win over Worlington. The World Cup Final was pretty good too the day after. All day long a few hardy HCC souls watched the drama unfold on the big screen in the pavilion, with lots of juniors from two games at the ground that day popping in to watch from time to time. Hopefully what they saw will inspire them to follow in the footsteps of Roy, Stokes, Buttler etc. It has been a much better month for the 1st XI, with three wins on the bounce against Maldon, Worlington and Wivenhoe. This despite plenty of availability and injury issues. Our overseas player Kudzai Maunze has scored two matchwinning centuries in those games – all the more remarkable since it has become apparent that he has been playing with a fractured thumb. Dom Manthorpe has also been chipping in with valuable contributions with both bat and ball, especially his 79 in the aforementioned Worlington game when he helped rescue the side from 88-6. With a tilt at the title now looking doubtful, to finish as the leading Suffolk club would be a realistic target. What’s up with the Twos? We seem to have lost that winning feeling. Two close-ish games chasing against Nowton and Earl Stonham were followed by two heavy defeats in which we only bowled a handful of overs and took one solitary wicket. A couple more wins are needed from somewhere to keep us safe from any relegation fears, but with a tough August ahead that won’t be easy. There is no doubt about performance of the month – that goes to Ben Daniels for his 117 not out in the Sunday side’s game at Vitec. While others were suffering from the previous night’s excesses at the cocktail evening and feeling decidedly Rougham, Ben rocked up, fresh as a daisy, for his first game of the season. But that is only half the story, as when he was joined by Martin Grayling at the crease the score was 91-8. They proceeded to put on 130 unbroken runs – a new club record for the 9th wicket. The Suffolk T20 Plate competition has gone well for us, with four wins out of four meaning that we have qualified – we think – for the Finals Day for the first time in September. Justin Toombs, Arran Tampion and Ryan Phillips have all made 50s in these games. The Ladies have had a midsummer break but resume at the end of July with their last four fixtures. August will be another massive month for cricket, with three Ashes Tests and lots of important games at the Meadow. The Under-19s take centre stage with five matches in their T20 competition. After finishing runners up last year they will have the chance to play in the Finals day on home soil, as we are delighted to have been chosen to host this event on Sunday September 1st. Gary Wiles
