Hadleigh Swimming Club enters new era! After two years of uncertainty and setbacks, swimming is just one of the sports and activities which has suffered as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Pools up and down the country have been forced to close, resulting in swimming clubs with nowhere to train. We are all aware that children and young people who participate in extracurricular activities enjoy better physical and mental health and clubs such as Hadleigh Swimming Club help build and strengthen communities. Things have turned out a little differently for Hadleigh Swimming Club as we have been excited to get back to a full training schedule in our town’s beautiful new facility. In fact, the good news does not stop there. During December 2021, Sudbury Storms reluctantly held its final training session but Hadleigh SC have been delighted to welcome swimmers from the club, along with some of the Sudbury volunteer and coaching team to become Dolphins. This has also meant that our swimmers have been able to benefit from additional pool time at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre. This is great news for competitive swimming in the Brett Valley area. More pool time means improved fitness and we are thrilled by the numbers of Hadleigh Dolphins, both old and new, who have made it to the Suffolk County Championships 2022, despite a very limited competition schedule to achieve ambitious qualification times. Access to a second, larger facility means we can look forward to hosting our own competitive events in the not-too-distant future. Commonly with married couples or those in a long-term relationship they each have assets in their own name and in joint names (e.g. bank accounts and the family home). This often leads people to think that they can manage the financial affairs of their spouse or partner, or could do if the need arose; however, this is not the case. Unfortunately, should your spouse or partner become unable to manage their affairs themselves, their individual bank accounts are likely to be effectively frozen and you will not be able to deal with organisations on their behalf. What is needed to be able to help To assist with your spouse or partner’s affairs during their lifetime you will need to have been appointed as an Attorney. This means your spouse or partner will need to have made Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) with a specialist solicitor. What happens if I do not have LPAs? Many people need to assist with these matters because their spouse or partner has become unable to manage their affairs themselves. This may be due to physical or mental incapacity, perhaps due to illness or an accident. If you want to help your partner with financial decisions and they did not have Powers of Attorney in place, you would need to make a costly application to the Court to obtain the necessary authority. The Court application takes several months and can be stressful and frustrating for those involved. Two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney LPAs are important documents that allow someone to give people (often close relatives or friends) the authority to make certain decisions on their behalf. There are two types of LPA: Property and Financial Affairs LPA – which allows an attorney to manage and deal with finances and property related matters (such as selling a home). Health and welfare LPA – which allows an attorney to make decisions regarding health and personal welfare. This type of LPA only comes into effect when a person no longer has the capacity to make such decisions themselves. People often think that if necessary, they would be able to make decisions about where their spouse or partner receives care, what type of care they receive and whether or not they should receive life-sustaining treatment. Without an LPA in place, relatives are not able to make these decisions. With the signs of Spring breaking through planning is well under way for our return in 2022, after a break of 2 years. The show team have been busy planning and preparing to be able to bring the show back in its wonderfully traditional agricultural show format with all of the long standing elements including the flower show, rural crafts, livestock and equine programme, art show, tradestands offering a huge variety of shopping, food hall with producers from the local area set to tempt you with delicious treats alongside our rings full of activities, horses, driving classes, heavy horses and in the main ring the incredible Bolddog Lings FMX display team to wow you with their bravery. This year’s Show Director is Luke Burdall-Goodchild. Luke has been show director for 3 years but due to the pandemic he has had the horrible time of having to make the decision to cancel the show twice. Third time lucky! Look for Luke’s two lovely boys on the advertising materials. The cookery demo is back this year with Mark David of The Cooking Experience at the helm. As a Hadleigh based business Mark will have a team local chefs and food producers with him throughout the day. A chance to sit and watch them making mouth-watering food and perhaps taste it as well! There are more than 150 classes of cattle, sheep, donkeys and horses on show; over 160 trade stands; the Poultry Tent; the Art Exhibition and Sale; Rural Crafts and the Flower Tent. The Flower Tent theme this year is “2022 Floral Calendar” which will be a fantastic show. Stocks Fairground will also be in Hadleigh for the weekend of the Show. They are open Friday evening until 10pm, during the Show on Saturday and on Sunday afternoon to midday to 5pm. Our ever-popular Food Hall will once again showcase local food and drink producers with new local businesses on show as well as long standing exhibitors. 2 Food Court areas will provide lunch for all the family with a huge range of food on offer. For the 2022 show the main change is that ALL TICKETS MUST BE PURCHASED IN ADVANCE. There will be no tickets available to buy on the gates. This is to give us a show that can be planned to accommodate any changes needed should there be any covid restrictions reintroduced and to ensure that we can plan our travel management as much as is possible prior to the day. Parking is FREE; gates open at 8.00am. HFAA is a registered Charity and has been in existence since 1839. We run a Schools Project for local Primary schools as well as supporting many local and farming charities. We hope to see many of you at the show, to bring our local communities back together, to celebrate all that is great about the local area and british agriculture and to finally be able to meet again. Chestnuts Woodturning Club Chestnuts Woodturning Club meets on the third Thursday of every month throughout the year and we meet in the community room of the United Reform Church in Hadleigh. We are a small, friendly club that provides our members with the opportunity to share ideas on all things woodturning and other associated subjects. Approximately every other month we have expert demonstrators come along to show us techniques and projects and to answer any questions that the members may have. The Hadleigh Archive Hadleigh’s History on your doorstep The mediaeval spire of St. Mary’s Church is the finest in Suffolk. Such spires are rare in this county, with only Wickham Market of some significance. The masonry tower of St. Mary’s was built during the 1200s, and reached a height of 64 feet, then, during the next century, the massive timberwork for a lead covered spire was constructed adding another 71 feet to make an overall height of 135 feet. The timber baulks over the centuries have warped and its effects can be clearly seen. The base of the spire has been altered at least three times. During the 18th century there was a wood ‘cradle’ feature, then during the mid 19th century a masonry parapet surrounding the spire base was built, but this was not successful, and during 1926 this was removed and replaced by a broach type base to the spire. At this same time, the spire was re-leaded. The photograph shows the work in progress of re-leading the spire, and the many raised ribs were incorporated to help prevent the expanding and contraction properties of lead. Hadleigh Womens Institute You have the opportunity to belong to the same organisation as the Queen and members of the Royal Family, i.e. the Women's Institute (WI)! We meet in the seminar room (there is a lift) of Hadleigh Library in the High Street at 7.30pm on the third Tuesday of the month. In January Charles Garland, a former TV producer talked about the actors in Dad's Army; in February Ann Day introduced us to 'Remarkable Women of Ipswich; titles coming up 'The Suffolk Gypsy' (this March); Fingerprints and Crime Scene Examination'; It Shouldn't Happen to a Vicar; Being a Butler' to name the next few. I recently saw some footage of a small brightly coloured bird perched on a low branch overhanging a slow running river. I recognised it straight away with its very distinctive and unmistakeable plumage. Its back was bright metallic blue and its breast was a coppery-brown. Its beak was long and black and it stared intently into the river below. Seconds later it plunged head first into the water, then returned to its perch. It was then that I spotted that the small bird had just caught a snack. It was of course a kingfisher. As if the site of the kingfisher in action was not enough, in the background was a magnificent heron on its own fishing expedition. Now you might think that I witnessed this wildlife drama on one of Sir David Attenborough’s fantastic documentaries, or even on the BBC’s recent Winterwatch programme that benefits from professionals using the latest in high definition, high tech cameras. But actually the footage was taken by a local wildlife enthusiast, Peter Cutts, and the action was captured at the Toppesfield Mill pool and this footage is by no means a one-off. We have seen clips of otters, badgers, foxes, voles, stoats, deer, not to mention a multitude of birds, reptiles and insects. We really are blessed to have some amazing wildlife living alongside us. However, for many, these creatures go unnoticed and so HEAT have launched a new project for 2022; Hadleigh Wildlife Watch is inviting the people of Hadleigh to look out for the wild visitors that share their neighbourhood and post any photos or clips to HEAT’s FB group, HEAT ECO Hadleigh. We will archive any clips and photos to our new website and hopefully over the year we will build a comprehensive picture of what wildlife is living alongside us. Since starting in 1984, Hadleigh Rugby Club has been through many highs and lows. From a few players with no matching kit trying to coach others during the games who hadn't played before to being promoted out of Eastern Counties and up the London Leagues. From 6 kids in the youth section to hosting on of the biggest Mini and Youth tournaments in South East England with over 1000 attendees. From beating local rivals Ipswich, Sudbury, Bury St Edmunds, Romford, Shelford and North Walsham to being taken out of Eastern Counties Div 1 and allowed to re-apply to join Eastern Counties Div 6 due to matches not being fulfilled. We now need help again in 2022. Unfortunately, the pandemic and a recent fire at the club have seen personnel (coaches/helpers) and players leave for various reasons. We would like to put an official call out to 'HELP HADLEIGH RUGBY CLUB'. We need helpers for the kitchen, bar, coaching and anywhere else you feel you could contribute. We also need players, both senior, youth and mini's. Now the pandemic is slowly being controlled people are looking to get back to being involved in their community, to go out, to meet new people and to have fun. The Cock Inn, Hadleigh As we enter March there is growing optimism that the worst of the Covid pandemic is behind us. The Omicron variant, while highly transmissible, seems to be less severe as many of us have experienced over the past few months. Nonetheless, the hospitality industry is in for a tough time and long recovery. While trading at Christmas was rather flat, new year was more or less cancelled while January and February were the quietest for many years. To add fuel to the fire, prices for almost everything is on the increase and I mean increase. I have been alarmed at the price rises in supermarkets, at the gas pumps and of course utility costs too. The latter is a big concern for hospitality. All our suppliers have increased their prices, some by considerable margins and all this at a time when pubs are trying to encourage customers back to their businesses. The challenge for the hospitality sector is to keep prices down while trying to survive. It’s not going to be easy. Now that the government, for the very first time, have recognised that there is a link between excessive drinking and the cheaper alcohol prices available in the supermarkets, we may see some future policies that may help pubs to compete on a level playing field. Pub closures have been on the increase since the start of the pandemic and the fear is that this will continue over the next few years. Let’s hope Hadleigh can keep all their watering holes trading successfully and with the support of the community, we should all weather the storm. As we return to normal trading, March sees the return of our full program of monthly events starting with our interesting Buskers Night on the first Tuesday of each month followed by our Pub Quiz night on the second Tuesday, with both events starting at 8pm. Wednesday night @Novice Darts’ is a popular evening and encourages non-league players to improve their game or indeed non dart players to learn the game. Live Music is back, including our all new Saturday Night Live music nights, with The Blaggers having kicked off the new music night in February. Coming soon is SKA band The Kicks and the Irish music band Great Craic. The fun starts at 9pm. Our Sunday afternoon Soiree continues with the wonderful LPT Duo on February 27th, followed by our stalwarts, 3 Steps to Heaven on the 13th March and the beautiful Jaz Lorna on the 27th March. All Sunday music starts at 3pm. Plenty of live televised sport to wet the whistle throughout March with the Premiership, Champions and Europa League football plus of course the closing stages of the rugby union Six Nations Championship. As I write it’s all to play for. Any one of five nations can still win it though France look likely favorites. My money is on Wales again and it may well all come down to the final day, Saturday 19th March when Wales take on Italy, Ireland play Scotland and England have a tough encounter with France in Paris. The People’s Project The People’s Project is Hadleigh Town Council’s new initiative to create a project or event for the community that stems from what you want, chosen by Hadleigh’s residents and delivered with and for the people of Hadleigh. Initiatives or projects that could improve or entertain the town will be called for, shortlisted by a panel made up of 2 town councillors, a town council officer and 3 public members, then through a public vote identify a preferred project that would then be delivered. The Town Council has a budget of £5k for this initiative to begin from April. So, please start thinking and look out for the call for ideas in the coming weeks! We’re also on the search for 3 members of the public to join the shortlisting panel. If you are interested in joining the panel, please send a couple of sentences why you want to be involved to projects@hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk.

Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) Hopefully, the PPG had its last Zoom meeting in January. We are looking forward to a face 2 face gathering in March. We now have two sub groups to work on two new initiatives; one to update our terms of reference which haven’t been done for quite some time and the other to improve patient access to the online appointment booking facilities. The Practice is undertaking the vaccination of vulnerable 5 to 11 year olds but the uptake has been poor. So far there has been no further news on the vaccination of healthy 5 to 11 year olds. The Health Centre’s Medical Team GP’s no longer work alone. There are many other specialists supporting their efforts to give the best possible service to their patients but who are they and what is their function? The following titles and job descriptions should help you better understand their role within the Practice. General Practitioner (GPs): General Practitioners (GP’s) are Doctors who look after patients within the communities where they live. They are often the first point of contact for anyone with a physical or mental health problem. They treat all common medical conditions and refer patients to hospitals and other medical services for urgent and specialist treatment. They focus on the health of the whole person combining physical, psychological and social aspects of care. GP’s are part of a much wider team whose role includes promoting, preventing and initiating treatment. They look after patients with chronic illness and do their best to ensure that they are as well as they can be so that they can continue living in their own home. Advanced Nurse Practitioners: Advanced Nurse Practitioners are registered nurses who have completed extra training and academic qualifications. They are able to clinically assess, diagnose, refer and treat patients who come with undiagnosed or undifferentiated problems. Advanced Nurse Practitioners are highly-trained health professionals that can undertake complex reviews of patients, similar to GPs. They can assess symptoms and build a picture of a patient’s condition, treat minor health problems, infections, minor injuries and prescribe medication where necessary. Practice Nurses: Much of their work involves managing the care of patients with long-term conditions and running a wide range of extended service clinics in the Practice including monitoring of long-term conditions such as asthma, diabetes and hypertension, cytology services, smoking cessation and childhood & travel vaccinations. Clinical Pharmacist: Clinical pharmacists are increasingly working as part of general practice teams. They are highly qualified experts in medicines and can help people in a range of ways. This includes carrying out structured medication reviews for patients with ongoing health problems and improving patient safety, outcomes and value through a person-centred approach. Health Care Assistants: The role of the Health Care Assistant can vary. They often provide assistance to the GPs and Nurses, as well as undertaking routine tasks such as phlebotomy, blood pressure, weight measurements for long-term conditions clinics, ECGs, suture removal and some injections. Phlebotomists: The role of the Phlebotomist is to take blood samples from patients which is then sent to the laboratory for testing. Blood tests have a wide range of uses and are one of the most common types of medical test.

The Future of St Mary’s Church I’m sure that most people in Hadleigh have had the experience many times of returning home and seeing the 135 ft spire of St Mary’s at some distance – across the fields coming from Layham or from the top of the hill on the way back from Whatfield. For a church even to have a spire is unusual in windy Suffolk, and it gives our parish church a distinction even the grandeur of Lavenham or Long Melford cannot claim. It is a symbol of the central place the church has in our town’s history. For seven centuries, this church has marked all the great events of Hadleigh’s past. Its doorsteps are worn down by generations of worshippers and visitors, its door handles polished by countless thousands of hands. Its registers have recorded births, marriages and deaths here for hundreds of years, and its walls and floors are lined with memorials to people significant in Hadleigh’s history. It may no longer have the monopoly on religious worship it had for centuries, but it is still the largest indoor space in our town, and it is used for many more things beside Church of England services. It is in this light that we should look at its future. As a Grade 1 listed building it always needs a lot of maintenance and as a place of worship and of public events like concerts, plays and exhibitions, it needs work to make it fully accessible as all such buildings should be. So it is that a plan has been developed to do all of these things, and it all starts with that most basic of needs, heating. The church is perishingly cold in the winter and the existing system, put in as a temporary measure some 40 years ago, is not only a waste of gas, it is also damaging the ancient roof. From this follow all kinds of consequences – a place to house an air pump boiler for a start. The need for more modern facilities entails work to replace the existing primitive toilet (currently just one eac !) and to equip the building with a proper kitchen for public events. These things do not belong inside a church, they need to be accommodated elsewhere. From this has come the plan to build an extension on the north side of the church to house these various services. So even if you do not worship at St Mary’s, please take an interest in its future as one of the most important and symbolic buildings in Hadleigh: the grandest public building we have. There will be a public exhibition before too long to show you what the plans are – though there’s a lot of work still to do – so please watch this space, and put any questions you may have to the Dean and churchwardens. Together Tuesday Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre, Tuesdays 2-4pm Together Tuesday group has been serving the Hadleigh community and surrounding areas for nearly 7 years and continues to offer this opportunity to meet on a weekly basis. What is the group’s purpose? Well, it is a form of friendship group. It’s a place where people can meet with friends, either familiar ones or make new ones, but also a place where people are sympathetic to others’ needs and respect each person’s individual situation. We have various activities you can take part in including indoor bowls and table tennis. We offer other activities each week which are optional. We have a short but fun quiz and raffle. The raffle helps subsidise activities and special one-off events such as visiting the theatre, a fish and chip lunch or pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. There is no pressure to take part in the activities mentioned; if you just fancy some company, that’s fine too. Prior to Covid, around 30 people attended the group each week, and up to 80 at our special Community Events. During lockdown Together Tuesday continued. We met twice a week as an online zoom group. After logging on, up to 14 people would meet with a cup of tea in hand, do a quiz and maybe an activity but, most importantly, engage in conversation and support. It reinforced how important it is to see others, chat and support each other. In May, Together Tuesday returned to live sessions and we have continued to meet every week since. Our venue is Covid secure, and all our volunteers are there to help you feel as safe as possible and lend a listening ear. During the last 2 years we have sadly lost many of our dear friends. Many of us have also found out just how fragile our mental health and well-being is, and how debilitating loneliness can be. So, why not just come along and join us? We know sometimes it’s hard to go to a new place or group, but a friendly welcome awaits you and we’d love to meet you. French’s Care Haven Hello to our readers, we had two people come forward that may possibly help with putting our shed up for us. At the moment nothing has come of that, but I am hoping in next month’s issue I will be able to show you a photo of some progress being made, or that it is up. Please if there is anyone out there who could help us, give me a call on the number below, because help putting it up along with some fencing is still needed. I keep saying to myself, surely with all the folk in this area there must be a man who knows what he is doing and can spare us some of his time?? Next month keep a look out on our Facebook page or on our website for the date of our next quiz night that we are planning for the spring. Sorry I cannot give the date in this edition, as our meeting for future events is after deadline day. Our last quiz in November was a huge success and enjoyed by all. Essex University have come back on board with us again and are sending students over once a week. I keep saying you must wear wellies because of all the mud, but half come in their shoes, which is not a good look for them when they leave the farm, oh dear washing machine needed! It is lovely to see the students working with the animals and doing the physical jobs that you cannot avoid, when working on a farm with large animals. It is a good experience for them to experience what it entails running an animal rescue. French's beautiful boy Hercules our cat has sadly lost his fight with a brain tumour. The tumour was diagnosed last Autumn, but was inoperable. Hercs was 18 years old and has spent 16 years with our charity at French's and 4 years ago he retired and come home with me. I loved him so very much and Lucy my therapy dog for French’s was his best friend and companion. I have been overcome by emotion and heartbroken at the loss of my beautiful boy, who was a fighter until the end. Tears are streaming down my face as I write this, it was only 2 days ago he died. God be with you my big handsome beautiful boy. I need to pull myself together....On a happier note, I would like to give a thank you to Boxford Drama Group for their donation of £150. Every penny donated to us goes straight towards the daily upkeep of the care and management of our animals. Donations keep us going, without them we would not be here. Farewell to Terry It is with a very heavy heart that we have said farewell to a larger-than-life character and past Hadleigh Rugby Club hooker, Terry (Smiffy) Smith. Terry’s wife Caroline and his boys will have a massive whole in their lives now he’s gone but will also have a deep mine of great memories to draw from. As will we at the club. I went to Hadleigh High School with Terry and he always said after leaving school, if he hadn’t found rugby he would probably have been in prison. He said that rugby saved him and coincidently Hadleigh Rugby Club were the beneficiaries of a personality that created brotherhood, laughter and an endless supply of anecdotes.

To quote former team captain Kev Parker, he was “Tough as teak” and “it was always a pleasure to cross the whitewash with T by your side and go to war for 80 minutes”. In times of intense battle on the pitch he used to break the tension when he did his infamous ‘Goose Step’ to try and fool the opposition as to which way he was going to sprint yet everyone knowing that he would simply smash into the nearest guy anyway! Apart from his rugby exploits he was a gifted bricklayer and worked for a while in Germany just like the “Aufwiedersehen Pet” characters we used to know. When he wasn’t building houses, Terry being Terry, he also helped me and a lot of team mates and friends with brickwork around our homes as well. That’s the sort of guy he was. Terry was widely known around town and in his youth, he was a keen fisherman. He got to know a lot of the local farmers by regularly being caught on their land ‘trying out a pond’! Also like an old fisherman, Terry liked a good yarn. You could always find him, and hear his gruff voice, in a local hostelry entertaining a group around him for a beer or two. Towns, schools and clubs need characters like Terry. Without the ‘Terrys’ in this world it would be a very dull place. Life at The Shelley Centre At last we are all back at work. It’s so great to see the riders again, and their families, we just long for the very last restriction to be lifted. We shouldn’t have people in the yard who are not volunteers. This stops many of our riders from untacking, grooming or just cuddling the ponies. The ponies tell me they really miss this face to face experience. However, in Lyn’s lovely photo you can see Amelia is having a chat with Squidgy before her ride. Omicron has swept through our school pupil riders and their families so each day brings cancellations and disappointments, and the Coaches have a time of it re-arranging the lesson plans. It must be like trying to run an actual school? Our thoughts are with you Teachers! When people apply to ride with us I get to meet them first. This makes my job very interesting. Since no two people are the same (like us horses) great care is taken to fit the new arrival into a group that has space for them. Not only that, but there has to be a pony of suitable size to carry them. New-comers are assessed by two of our volunteers who invite the rider to try me out! That way they are not being asked to brave a live animal straight away, and our volunteers can assess the person’s capabilities and needs. Win, win! The only trouble is that sometimes people have to wait quite a time for the chosen space or pony to become available. Once the weather gets warmer the offer of coming up to the yard for tea with a pony will be made, and we hope this will alleviate the frustration of being in such a long queue. See how good it was to have the afternoon sun shining on a Monday ride one cold day last month. We really are so grateful to our volunteers for coming up on their chosen day come rain or shine. I think they must love it here, I hope they don’t just come for the cake?

How would you like to be a guide for the sumptuous brick 15th century Deanery Tower in Hadleigh? An informal guide training session for volunteers is planned for Saturday 26th March from 10am until 12 noon. We will meet in the Dean’s Library on the first floor of the tower, entry by the main front doors, then up a spiral stairway. An enthusiasm to tell the story of the tower and to ascend and then descend the stairway safely with the visitors is the necessary requirements. From A to Z, Glenn reports... My virtual walk through Africa is improving my geographic knowledge of the Continent. Having trekked through Botswana, with a brief wander through Namibia, and a few days in Angola on the west, I am just on the outskirts of Zambia on the east, which in a straight line, will be about 250 miles walking before another foray into Angola - as the border meanders between A and Z. After three months on the road, as it were, I am still only 14% of the way. Barring any untoward incidents, by the time of the St Edmund Way walk I should be approaching the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Glenn Abbassi

A response is expected by Spring. Over £7,000 grants funding remains available, with new awards allocated on 24th February. Any unused funding will be ‘lost’. The next scheme starts in April with £20,000. Grants from CIL and S106 monies are available for community infrastructure. If any organisation is planning an event, or would like to, please contact the Town Council to ensure joined-up thinking. There will be opportunities to tag local events onto national ones. Street closures will be free but must be applied for before 27th March. At present there are only 11 councillors – either a bi-election, if requested by the deadline, or co-opting will ensure the vacancies are filled. The Neighbourhood Plan is underway. Professional consultants, Navigus Planning, have been engaged. It was requested that regular updates on progress be provided to the HCF. Working Group meetings can be attended by the public and information is available on the website. 3.3 BABERGH & MID SUFFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL The Women’s Tour (cycling) is due to return to Suffolk for the first stage on 6th June The route not yet finalised but hopefully it will include Hadleigh. Armed Forces Day is 25th June. Discussions to link up with Wattisham are in the offing. Jan Devey met with a representative to try to find a solution to barriers in Magdalen Road car park. The Virtual High Street campaign is being evaluated, having received mixed feedback. Feedback has been positive. After the success of the pilot scheme BDC is extending this for a further 8 months so more start-up/entrepreneurs can bring their businesses to new audiences and add variety to the market scene on a changing basis. Everyone agreed the team does an amazing job for Hadleigh and is very much appreciated. 3.5 HADLEIGH & BOXFORD PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP The group is pleased to be meeting face-to-face in March. There are two sub-groups (i) to update the Terms of Reference, and (ii) improving patient access to online booking. The majority of Covid booster jabs are completed. Vaccinations of vulnerable 5–11-year-olds are offered but uptake is poor. To date, there is no further news on vaccinating healthy 5–11 year-olds. Face-to-face meetings with doctors are always available. 3.6 St MARY’S CHURCH New windows have been installed. Decorative bars and safety rails are expected to be installed soon. Work on the church tower is complete and scaffolding has been removed, showing renovations to glass and stone work as well as new bat and swift boxes. The cost, paid for from the sale of the Marieschi painting, is around £160k. Elaine Root and Frank Minns have joined the team. Two events: a Murder Mystery evening, ‘Who Killed the Vicar?’ (with buffet supper) on 23rd April and a Midsummer Flowers & Music Festival on 25th- 26th June which is hoped will be supported by the wider Hadleigh Community. The Deanery Tower is owned financially by the Diocese, temporarily by Father Jo, and emotionally by the residents of Hadleigh. A full spec for refurbishing the historic Dean’s Library and plan to ask local tradesmen to tender for the work is in place. There will be a Deanery Tower Volunteer Tour Guides training event on 26th March 10am – 12 noon

James Cartlidge met with HEAT to understand ways in which he could help, and how the group works with other organisations. Plans are underway to improve the whole of the River Brett’s water quality. A website will be available with more information. 4 KING GUTHRUM GROUP Huw Roberts gave a presentation of how this fledgling group, a Charitable Incorporated Organisation wishes to use the fascinating history of this king, believed to have been buried in Hadleigh in 890, to benefit tourism, heritage, education and culture within Hadleigh. There will be a variety of events covering all aspects to engage the community. A public launch with celebrity endorsement was supported by local media. Many ideas for taking this exciting project forward were raised at the meeting. Funding will be needed and BDC may be able to assist with this. Suffolk County Council on Heritage and Arts Department may be able to assist should a statue/memorial be considered. A further link with the church (where King Guthrum’s tomb is noted) could be made when any planned archaeological dig is next made. Links are currently being established with Denmark and the Netherlands. A newsletter and website will be available soon, while talks with the Hadleigh Historian and local media are underway. Sue Andrews gave a very interesting talk about the history of King Guthrum which can be found in the current issue (Number 68) of The Hadleigh Historian, available from Avis and The Idler in the High Street. If anyone is interested in helping in any way, or wants to receive regular updates, please email the group. 5 CHAIRS FOR REST OF 2022 Chairs for the rest of 2022 were agreed. Three chairs – hip hip hooray! etc 6 HADLEIGH –OPPORTUNITIES & CHALLENGES REVISITED The work being undertaken by HEAT, King Guthrum Group and Virtual High Street/Market consultations covers a major amount of the points raised, so it was thought prudent to keep a close eye on the issues raised but not take any forward as a separate project at this time. 7 AOB 7.1 Bank Hub A question was raised about having a Bank Hub in Hadleigh, but since the Post Office is available for paying in/out for all banks it was not thought viable. The hub would be to assist those residents who do not have computer access but need to speak in person with a banking representative. There are premises that could be shared by different Banks. A councillor agreed to take the matter back to BDC. It seems the TSB left Hadleigh because not enough people wanted to borrow money: they only wanted to save or pay bills. 7.2 Defibrillators Abbeycroft Leisure happy to be involved with training. Town Council’s site location map could be circulated via Hadleigh Community News and is on Town Council website. An area near Lady Lane by the new estate is in need of externally fixed defibrillator. 7.3 Trees in the old Barclays Bank car park Proposed development of the area is affecting healthy, mature trees. There is an appeal to revoke the planning permission and save them, particularly in Jubilee Year and when climate change is so high on the agenda. 7.4 Hadleigh Community Choir The choir is 10 years old and has received a grant from the Town Council to produce a CD to be distributed free of charge to anyone in Hadleigh who would benefit from music as therapy or for health – care homes, community groups, the health centre etc 7.5 Together Tuesday Jill Mason confirmed this established group (at Hadleigh Pool & Leisure Tuesdays 2-4pm is not just for people living with dementia, but for anyone who feels isolated or likes meeting others. There is table tennis, indoor bowls, painting and other activities. With an event planned on Sunday 3rd April at St Mary’s, with music and refreshments any ideas, practical help or donations can be made to Jill. Meeting for the first time in 2022, the members enjoyed a demonstration and talk by David Wright from Norfolk. His foliage and flowers were a delight. He found himself without work during the Covid lockdown but managed to enjoy cycle rides around his local area, wildlife watching, making containers, learning to demonstrate on Zoom, teaching himself and others how to make animals out of chicken wire. And once having completed his 6th arrangement, we were treated to a hare and some dragonflies. Next month we have Pat Barton demonstrating. If you would like to join us, we meet on the second Tuesday of each month at The Hadleigh United Reformed Church, Market Place, Hadleigh 7:00 for 7:30 start, all welcome.

Hadleigh Walkers We had 23 join us for our February walk on a beautiful crisp day and it was a pleasure to welcome lots of new faces. Our March walk on Saturday 12th will again be a circular walk, this time taking a route to the East and North of Hadleigh. Starting in Hadleigh, we will leave Stonehouse Road car park at 0930 and take the Railway walk to Woodlands, then Green Fields, Vauxhall Cottages, White Ladies, Ramsey Wood, Old House, Shooting Box, Wolves Wood and back into Hadleigh along George Street. The walk is about 10.5 miles along moderate terrain but with little in the way of shortening options for anyone wanting a reduced distance. We will have 2 refreshment stops along the way and should arrive back around 1330 – 1400. As usual, we aim to maintain a not-too-demanding 2.5 mph (4 km/hr). Walkers should be aware that in March any weather is possible so strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground will be muddy or rough in places. Hadleigh & District Garden Club For our February meeting we were pleased to welcome Paula Baker from Suffolk Prickles Hedgehog Rescue. Her vast knowledge was so informative, going back to the age of Dinosaurs. The sad fact is that modern day life is pushing this cute creature towards extinction. The rescue centre deals with horrible injuries and sadly deaths from hazardous waste in the environment to busy roads. Hedgehogs do no harm but a lot of good…eating our garden pests. Let’s try and welcome these charming characters into our gardens by leaving a few untidy corners. Over the past few years there have been many changes in the way we garden. For instance when I first grew runner beans on the allotment, a trench was dug, large amounts of compost were put in then filled in and runner bean plants grown on top. Now the compost is piled in and beans planted in this. It does not seem to affect the size of the crop and is a lot less work. Likewise no dig is the buzz word. Copious amounts of compost is added to the ground and left for the worms to integrate into the soil. Gardening magazines praise this method and I find it works. When I first had my allotment my neighbour was a massive fan of double digging. This involved digging a trench two spits deep, barrowing the soil to the other end of the plot, adding manure to bottom of the trench, then turning the next row into the first. Continuing this process until the row of saved soil is reached. Very hard work and now considered unnecessary. It is all about leaving the soil undisturbed and allowing soil life to do the work for you. Fungi, worms and other organisms thrive leaving the soil well aerated. When you stop digging you stop exposing weed seed from the light and air so fewer weeds germinate. Another change has been widespread use of mycorrhizal fungi when planting shrubs etc whether pot grown or bare rooted. Sprinkle around roots when planting and this spurs plant to produce more roots quickly. It’s not cheap, but it works. It is our AGM on March 14 at 7.30 in the Guildhall..but I promise this will be kept as brief as possible. We will be taking annual membership of £12. Following this we have an amusing speaker entitled “I wish I’d known before I started” - various gardening tales which will be light hearted. The competition is a vase of daffodils with foliage , plus the raffle and refreshments. Happy gardening.

Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South Suffolk County Council Budget 2022-23 I sometimes reflect whether working as a full-time employee is commensurate with the demands of being Hadleigh’s representative on Suffolk County Council (SCC). This role easily absorbs a couple of days’ commitment from me every week and, like many of you, I find balancing these responsibilities with necessary family time very challenging. In fact, I am one of very few full-time workers of the 75 councillors on SCC, but I believe that I give an important viewpoint on how policy decisions affect the county’s hard working families. A recent example of this was last Thursday 17th February 2022 when the council approved its Budget for 2022-23, which includes an increase of 2.99% to council tax. This tax rise is divided into 1.99% for general services and 1.00% for the Adult Care Precept (ACP). Many councillors argued that our adult care services needed more additional funding than this and called for a greater increase for the ACP. On taking my turn to speak, I was alone in pointing out that workers and their families are facing a huge rise in class 1 NI Contributions on their payslips from April this year. This fact was clearly overlooked by the other council members, probably as they are not in this employment bracket. I argued that further tax increases were unnecessary and unfair given the overall cost of living increases we will all soon be facing. The overall 2022-23 budget comprises a net revenue budget of £625.4m, an increase of 4.5% from 2021-22, and a capital programme amounting to £104.6m. Alongside this, the Council also approved its first-ever full Net Zero carbon budget. This latter element will allow the council to measure its carbon emissions and monitor and evaluate the impact of decisions it makes. The council can report each year on its progress tracking its ambitions towards Net Zero by 2030.

It’s Serendipity Back in 2002 Serendipity, Hadleigh Choral Society’s smaller choir, performed at its first event, a wedding at Little Glemham church. Since then, the choir has gone from strength to strength and this year celebrates its 20th anniversary. Nansi Browne leads Serendipity and is very proud of its achievements. “In addition to performing our own concerts, we are also invited to sing at weddings, funerals, memorials and other special services. We feel very privileged to be part of such occasions. When a family contact us they often need a little help with the choice of music and its suitability. We can chat over coffee and come up with some ideas. Serendipity is essentially a chamber choir, but we tackle the whole musical range, from Take That to the works of John Rutter or Handel’s Zadok the Priest.” Speaking to Nansi, it is very clear that the heart of Serendipity and its purpose is community and supporting families, particularly when it comes to planning funerals. “With any funeral our primary aim is to swell the singing in church so that bereaved families can get some comfort from hearing their chosen hymns filling every corner of the church and engaging with the congregation. We are happy to be the back-up if a family needs us for the hymns but also perform songs that have a special meaning or evoke happy memories for the family. I remember one particular performance of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. It was very moving and gave everyone in the church a few moments to reflect.” Another part of Serendipity’s real purpose relates to working with the Dementia Action Alliance Group. Prior to the pandemic the choir would join the local group for a sing along which was hugely beneficial for both dementia sufferers and their carers, and very rewarding for the singers as well. “Working with Dementia Action Alliance in Hadleigh was really worthwhile and we hope to pick this up again as the COVID restrictions are lifted. Musical memories stay with us for much longer than other memories. A familiar tune can light up a dementia sufferer and trigger really positive responses.” I chatted with Nansi whilst we both enjoyed a cuppa. Our dogs were becoming restless wanting their dinner as we moved the conversation from the choir to our own musical talents, or lack of them in my case! We said goodbye promising to chat again as we agreed the power of music and its impact on us all, particularly at certain milestones in our lives, was far too big a topic for just one cup of tea. Hadleigh North Ward and Cabinet Member for Environment Council Tax increase: The Conservative Cabinet Member for Finance has proposed £3.48 per month, equivalent to 29p per month for a Band D householder. Independent Members believe had parking charges been introduced, we would not have to increase the Council tax. However, I am sure most residents would rather have 29p per month increase rather than £1 per week visiting the car parks! It is a minimal increase and parking will remain free for the first 3 hours and I shall not be implementing any parking charges. Sheltered housing charges and garage rents also remain frozen at 2021/22 levels, but Babergh District Council tenants face a proposed increase of 4.1% to their rents, to cover inflation and allow investment in improving the quality of council homes. Barriers in Magdalen Road Car Park: I will be able to update you next month on the options currently being considered with regards to removing parking bays so that we can retain trees and reduce trip hazards for users of the car park due to roots penetraing and lifting the surface. I am keen to ensure all trees are retained and there is minimal disruption, but this will require removal of bays. Hadleigh’s Missing Ghost Train: The Town Council have removed for safety reasons the children’s play train at the Corks Lane play park area. I have asked the Town Clerk to make a request to me for funding from my Locality Budget to replace train or commission a local artist to build another, as this is such a popular and important part of a child’s learning and seems to have become an iconic little reminder of many people’s childhood. If anyone knows a local tradesman, joiner or carpenter who maybe interested in being involved with this project, please contact me. Parking Machines - Good news: I promised to update you on progress in respect of the new pay & display parking machines. The old machines were outdated and outlived their usage and the proposed timeline is set out below: • Installation & commissioning of the machine was expected w/c 14th February for a two-week period • Machines expected to be fully operational week ending 25th February My team meet with the supplier each week, to ensure the programme remains on track. If there are any problems, I will of course keep you updated. We are also working with the supplier to produce a ‘user journey’ guide for the new machines, which we are hoping to promote ahead of the installation to show users how easy the machines are to use. Hadleigh Art Club Activities We meet from 2.00 until 4.00 pm on Tuesday afternoons during term time in the Seminar Room above the Library. For those that ask, we try to give advice/guidance/constructive criticism but there is no 'teacher'. We all do art because we enjoy it, not necessarily because we are good at it, we all have pieces that turn out well and others that don't, so please don't worry about your ability, just come along and join in, we're a friendly group. We charge £3 per session to cover cost of room hire and tea/coffee. You only pay for the sessions you attend and the first one is free so you are welcome to drop in and see us on a Tuesday afternoon. This festival runs from May until October and there will many events happening all over Suffolk during this period. The Town Council want to team up with other organisations within the town to run events during this time and also for events on the Jubilee Bank Holiday Weekend. The Black Death in Suffolk Professor Mark Bailey to speak at Hadleigh Society Meeting, 8pm, Wednesday 23rd March Interested in history and in learning more about the Black Death in Suffolk? Then do come along to the next meeting of the Hadleigh Society when Professor Mark Bailey will be talking about this major pandemic of the 14th century. It reached Hadleigh and the rest of Suffolk in 1349 and was responsible for killing almost half the population; it also impacted dramatically on many aspects of society and transformed the lives of the people – whether rich or poor. Mark Bailey is one of the foremost medieval historians in the country and Professor of Late Medieval History at the University of East Anglia. He is the author of numerous publications; the latest entitled After the Black Death. The Hadleigh Society is delighted to host such a prestigious speaker and looks forward to welcoming Hadleigh’s history enthusiasts to this special meeting. The talk, at 8pm on Wednesday 23rd March, will be in the Guildroom of the Guildhall – accessible via the door opening onto the churchyard (across from St Mary’s church). Parish Council The following were the main matters discussed during the meeting of 26 January 2022 • County Council report It had been proposed that the council’s budget for 2022-23 should be increased by 2.99%; the proposals would be put forward for approval by full council in February. An additional £20m over the next three years towards improving Suffolk’s highway drainage systems and footpaths had been approved; Cllr Hall said the additional funding for footpaths was mainly for areas where none currently existed, but clarification of how the money would be spent was expected in February. SCC’s Head of Highways was leaving and would be replaced in March. • Charity donations Donations to EAAA, SARS and Hadleigh First Responders had already been approved in the 2022-23 budget; additional requests for support had been received from several charities. It was agreed unanimously to donate £50 to Sudbury & District Citizens’ Advice in the coming financial year as the organisation’s workload had increased considerably during the pandemic. All donations would be reviewed annually. • Speeding 30mph wheelie bin stickers had been distributed, mostly to households in Upper Layham (it was noted that they were not appropriate for part of Stoke Road, Lower Layham, where the speed limit was currently 60mph). The possibility of an additional SID device on Stoke Road had been discussed; however, this would not be possible unless the 30mph speed limit could be extended. This would cost several thousand pounds and a ‘history of collision’ report would also be required by SCC. It was agreed to take no further action at the moment, but to ask Stoke Road residents to inform the PC of any accidents or incidents caused due to speeding. The SID device in Upper Street was being moved regularly between the two locations; the PC was very grateful to the volunteers for their help. • Additional defibrillator for Lower Layham Councillors had carried out a site visit and a suitable location had been identified in Stoke Road. However, before taking the matter any further it was necessary to confirm ownership of the land, and discuss feasibility and costs with UK Power Networks. • Quiet Lanes Minor adjustments had been made to some of the post locations, due to changes in road verges since the original plans were submitted. Once the posts had been put in place by SCC, the PC would be responsible for attaching the signs.National Grid - Bramford to Twinstead upgrade The PC was unhappy with the consultation process, which included webinars, but no face-to-face meetings with the public; SCC shared this concern. The Clerk would write to National Grid, with copies to SCC and James Cartlidge MP. In the meantime, she would send out a community email with details of the webinars and where information could be accessed (eg Hadleigh Library), as it appeared not all residents had received a pack from National Grid through the post. • Spring Clean This would be held on Saturday 12 March. • Damaged tree in Mill Lane Cllr Woods had reported that SCC contractors cutting the hedge in Mill Lane had lopped a healthy tree in two by mistake. The Clerk had emailed SCC Highways as the PC was anxious that the tree be replaced urgently, before the end of the planting season; this had now been done. • AGM It was agreed to change the date of the AGM from 25 May to 18 May 2022. Village Spring Clean 12 March 2022 Please join our Village Spring Clean and help to make Layham cleaner, safer and more attractive for all our residents. The Defibrillator at the Marquis As part of the building works at the Marquis, scaffolding has been erected along the side of the building where the defibrillator was sited. The contractors have taken it down to avoid it being damaged, and it is currently located in the office - they will relocate it outside once the building works are completed. Although the defibrillator is currently inside the building, it is still available 24/7 as there is a night porter on site. You may like to familiarise yourself with the way into the building just in case you have reason to use the device. Exercise Classes Layham Village Hall In response to the village survey over 20 people expressed an interest in walking/exercise classes. We might be able to obtain funding from Community Action Suffolk. To apply we need to identify what activities people would like and what time of day. Other nearby villages have classes in Nordic walking, Pilates, yoga, Zumba and carpet bowls as suggestions. We would need a minimum of 10 people to run a class. If you are interested in a class or classes for exercising, can you please email me at suekeeuk@yahoo.co.uk or drop me a line and post in the village hall letterbox by the end of March. Please supply name, contact details, what exercises you would be interested in and whether you prefer evening or afternoon classes. I will then forward our preferences and apply for funding that could subsidise classes and purchase equipment. The children have had lots of fun exploring how ice is made this month and how it melts. They helped to make the ice and chose some toys to freeze in the ice cubes. They carefully poured in the water. We had to wait until the next day before the water had frozen! We then had lots of fun pouring on warm water to help the ice to melt and free the trapped toys. We are holding a clothing collection in aid of playgroup, please bring any bags of clothing to playgroup before Wednesday 2nd March. Thank you. News from Layham Village Hall Last month our treasurer Judith applied to Babergh District Council for an Omicron Hospitality and Leisure Grant and if successful this will help offset the loss of income to the Village Hall due to Covid restrictions. Jan continues to receive books either left in the Church or delivered to her home. She is very grateful to those people who have donated. The sale is on Sunday May 15th. We have received many special interest books - several over a century old - so collectors out there, please note the date! The Committee would like to say a special thank you to Lesley Garnett who has generously donated a music centre for use in the Village Hall. This will be a useful community asset. Playstation Pre-School This half term we have explored lots of different themes, looking at animals and vehicles, building balance beams, practising our ball skills and enjoying parachute games. We have also had great fun with: Healthy eating week - we learnt about different foods and how to look after our teeth, the children made pizza wraps and soup. Science week - we were kept busy all morning on the dinosaur dig, finding ways to get the dinosaurs out of the ice. We had a small social get together this term after a parent pointed out that she knew very few of the parents due to covid restrictions. The night was warmly received and you will be able to catch up again at our fundraiser event at Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics Club in March. Next half term our themes are shapes, numbers and exploring spring which will involve some planting. We will be sharing our love of stories celebrating world book day by asking the children to bring in their favourite stories to share and the children will receive a book token. Our annual Easter bonnet competition to fundraise will also happen at the end of term so get your creative heads on! Sadly we have said goodbye to our cleaner Janet this term. She has been part of the staff for seven years and the committee would like to say thankyou and enjoy your well-earned retirement. News from St Mary’s School It’s been a busy half term at St Mary’s as we all settle back into a more normal routine. Thrive The pandemic, as we know, has had a serious impact on children’s health and wellbeing. In September we introduced the Thrive approach, with its own dedicated space, and it has been successfully established in the school. Our 2 fully qualified practitioners are working to build children’s resilience and emotional and mental health. They work with targeted pupils as well as children with problems at key moments. This is in addition to the continuing, valuable interventions of our Pastoral Support worker, and our lunchtime nurture groups. Suffolk Children’s University This term we have launched an exciting new venture with the Suffolk Children’s University. We had a visit from Debbie Bennett who spoke to individual year groups, to promote out of school activities to enrich children’s learning and enhance their life experiences. Participating children will have passports to record their achievements, working towards a graduation day at Suffolk One, resplendent in gowns and mortar boards! Police visit Other visitors to the school have included 2 police officers who came to talk to years 5 and 6 about staying safe, especially when out and about in the community. Road safety Our Junior Road Safety officers in year 5 organised a poster competition for the whole school. Children produced some great posters about keeping safe when crossing the road. The winning posters are on display on the information board. Number day To raise funds for the NSPCC children and staff came to school dressed as a number! Year groups across the school took part in a range of number-based activities, for example, making calculations using dice, exercising and recording pulse and heart rates, and a number scavenger hunt! Sport Year 6 had a very exciting morning at Hadleigh High school, learning lots of trampolining skills. They all showed masses of enthusiasm and keenness to join Miss Clark’s trampolining club in due course. Everyone is enjoying the new netball posts on the playground, as well as the always popular gym equipment and the trim trail. Spirituality We have become adept at worship gatherings by zoom, but it is lovely being back together in the hall. Father Jo has entertained the children with his wacky stories, and they are becoming experts at working out the meanings!

Back in Competition! On Sunday 13th February 35 of our squad gymnasts performed at Pipers Vale in the County Grades Competition. This involved performing routines on vault, bars, beam, floor and range and conditioning. There is a pass mark for each piece and distinctions are awarded for total scores of 57.00 or above. All of our gymnasts passed their respective grades and 30 achieved a distinction, which was amazing. A special congratulations must go to Olivia Bartholomew, Phoebe Chew and Nicole Peddelty who got the highest marks of the day in grade 1, 4 and 5 respectively. Cycling seems to be linked everywhere with maintaining good physical health (as well as saving the planet) but there is plenty of evidence that it helps with brain health and wellbeing. Your brain relies on the flow of oxygen and the more efficient the blood supply to your brain through improved circulation the healthier it is. Exercise also helps the process of building new nerve cells in the brain which protects against memory loss with age. There are also important psychological benefits. Outdoor exercise is a terrific mood enhancer. Endorphins are released and this can stimulate feelings of pleasure. Added to the fact that sunlight helps to release another brain hormone, serotonin; cycling can definitely lift your spirits. Cycling, like most forms of vigorous exercise helps you to sleep and rejuvenate the brain. And good sleep is fundamental to good health. Cycling helps you to maintain your coordination. Just think of all the activities that you perform as you ride a bike: muscle control, concentration, visual awareness and balance. For many, cycling is a social activity. The Hadleigh Cycling Club offers social rides for those who want to spend time with others. The Club rides are usually at a speed that allows members to hold a conversation and most involve a café stop. Hopefully, the experience of riding also helps you to reduce stress levels, relax and clear the mind. The Club runs a social ride on Sundays in the winter which usually begin at 9.00am from The George and there is a café stop. Fidelis update We are very pleased to announce that Fidelis has now restarted back after 2 years. The Hidden Gardens Of Hadleigh are opening again! – 11th June 2022 This year over 30 gardens will be open to look round on Saturday 11 June 2022. Last year it was gardens in autumn, this year it’s summer and sunshine (well, we can dream…). After a busy 2021 we’re looking forward to a more relaxed 2022 when hopefully we can welcome more runners back to training. If you’re new and fancy a go, then we’re offering a free trial month with access to our training sessions via our app! We meet weekly at Hadleigh Leisure Centre and are currently running improvers sessions on Monday and Thursday evenings, Beginners session on a Tuesday evening and a monthly Track Session at Northgate Sports Centre in Ipswich. Hadleigh Hares Beginners Group meets on Tuesday Evenings at 7.00pm. It is for runners who have either just completed a Couch 2 5K course or can run for about 30 minutes nonstop. It’s a friendly, inclusive, and sociable group and we would love to welcome some new members. Sessions are a mixture of runs out and about the Hadleigh area and some trainings sessions to help improve your running technique. If you have wondered what it might be like to join a running club but been a bit unsure if it is for you do come along - you can have up to three sessions before deciding whether you want to become a member. Hadleigh Hares 2022 Couch 2 5K course will be starting on Tuesday 19th April at 7.00pm. The course is suitable for anyone who would like to start running from scratch or return to it after a period out of running. It really doesn’t matter what age you are, your current fitness levels, size, or gender you will all be welcome. All the course leaders have undertaken the C25K course themselves so know what it is like to take those first steps into running. Cost is £15.00 for the 9-week course. If you would like to find out more about either the beginners’ group or apply for a place on the Couch 2 5K course, then please email Julia Bilotta on julia.bilotta@yahoo.co.uk Hadleigh Hares Road Races - Sunday 21st November 2021 Following cancellation of our annual road races in November 2020, Hadleigh Hares were delighted to be able to host the John Chisnall Hadleigh 5, the Turners Blinds and Shutters Hadleigh 10, and the 2km Junior Fun Run sponsored by Plant Parts. Mindful of the impact of the global pandemic, huge consideration was given to ensuring safety when planning the event, as a result the races were quite different to our usual offering; despite this and the extremely chilly conditions 400 senior runners and 51 Juniors ran on the day, with all competitors successfully completing their respective races. Fantastic music from Clarke Entertainments and commentary from Rob Grimsey at the start & finish of the races made for a vibrant atmosphere, it was truly great to be back to racing! Competitors came from as far afield as Manchester, but as always, we had very healthy representation from across our region, with both established club and unaffiliated runners taking part in the event. 145 competitors completed the John Chisnall Hadleigh 5 which was won by Scott Ramsey of Hadleigh Hares in a time of 26:36. John Scaife of Hadleigh Hares finished in second place (28:43), and Jake Hayward of Stowmarket Striders in third (30:12). First female was Kaye Branton of Felixstowe RRC with a time of 35:53, Holly Taylor, also of Felixstowe RRC finished second (37:07), and third place went to Sophie Cronin (38:16). Continuing the winning streak, 5 mile male and female team prizes were awarded to Hadleigh Hares. Congratulations to Scott Ramsey, John Scaife, Karl Feagan, Kay Oxford, Victoria Tapp, and Nathalie Hooper. 255 competitors completed the Turners Blinds and Shutters Hadleigh 10 which was won by David Green of Rugby and Northampton Athletic Club in a time of 53:16. Danny Rock of Felixstowe RRC secured second place (53:46), and third place was awarded to Patrick Hannah (55:23). First female was Hayley Munn of Rugby and Northampton Athletic Club in a time of 1:01:07, Katie King of St Edmunds Pacers finished second (1:03:25), and Natasha Dunnage of Ipswich Jaffa finished third (1:04:33). Female team prize was awarded to St Edmund’s Pacers, and the male prize to Felixstowe RRC. Congratulations to Katie King, Jenny Morgan, Kirsty Weavers, Danny Rock,

Aidan Coughlan, and Henry Catling. 51 Juniors took part in the 2km Fun Run which was won by Isla Widdowson, with Harry Read finishing in second place, and Darcy Bowen third. Happiness is a Blanket On a freezing cold Sunday morning in February Jan Devey met Phillippa Knight, from the charity Project Linus, at a car park in Martlesham. The purpose of the rendezvous was to hand over Hadleigh’s most recent contribution to the charity’s Suffolk collection. While the rest of the world rushed round buying Valentine’s cards and bunches of roses, Phillippa and Jan loaded 45 brightly coloured knitted and crocheted blankets into the local rep’s car. Phillippa was delighted with both the quantity and quality of the wraps which have all been painstakingly created by several ladies in Hadleigh including a number of Sydney Brown Court residents. Hilary Crisp made sure their latest creations reached Jan in time for the Martlesham drop. As blankets are destined for many different venues and uses; from neonatal clinics to adult care homes, they can be any size. The Semer Airgun Society The Semer Airgun Society (SAS) meet every Tuesday evening from 5.30 – 8.30pm at Semer Village Hall. We are a friendly group of people who enjoy both air pistol and rifle target shooting. The indoor range is set up with five 10mtr lanes and one 6mtr. During the summer months it is also possible to shoot outside, light and weather permitting. Membership is open to anyone 9 years of age and over. Those under 18 years need to be accompanied by a responsible adult. Anyone taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme or casual shooters are also welcome as are wheelchair users as the hall is fully accessible. We have a selection of club rifles/pistols for anyone wanting to try the sport. The Golden Pellet is our annual competition open to all members but there is no obligation to take part. The 2021 winner was Fred Gregory from Lavenham and in 2019/20 Elizabeth Hood from Lindsey. If you would like to come along or want more information, please contact Bill Dewick 01473 658009.
