Save St. Mary’s - The Past is Our Future How do you keep our many cold and deteriorating churches alive and relevant to everyday living? Several easy options spring to mind; ignore the spiritual implications and change their use to suit small businesses or allow them to be converted into quirky accommodation for those with sufficient funds to make the changes. However, there is another way which would keep both religious and non-religious citizens happy. Turn back the clock and return the church to a multi-purpose community hub with a place for worship too. There are several churches that have successfully reverted to this historical use of their building; St Mary’s in Ely being one. Recently, I was fortunate enough to visit and tour this church with one of its members who was instrumental in seeing their vision come to fruition. Of course, they have taken advantage of the very latest technology and building materials to effect the change. Under floor heating and radiators economically powered by air source heat pumps ensure that the cavernous space is comfortably warm at all times without breaking the bank in the process. The pews have been replaced by upright chairs giving greater seating flexibility for worship or social events and happenings. Kitchen facilities can provide light beverages or full meals as appropriate. As a lapsed Methodist, living in Hadleigh, why would I be interested in the future of any historical church? Readers familiar with Hadleigh will know that their St Mary’s is an iconic landmark in the middle of the town. For hundreds of years it has served the local population as place of worship and provided an enormous space capable of hosting any community activities or gatherings requiring plenty of room.
