A novel about how our upbringing shapes who we are, and about shame and forgiveness. Theis lives alone and doesn’t really have any contact with anyone other than his dog Snuppa. But Snuppa is getting old and has to be put down, so, after several years of silence, Theis gets in touch with his daughter Ruby. Ruby is reluctant to have anything to do with her occasionally alcoholic father. She and her partner have also long been trying to have children together, without success, and a fresh encounter with her father only reminds her of everything that they haven’t achieved – any of them. Dad Almost Went to Woodstock is a novel about how our upbringing shapes who we are, and about shame and forgiveness. It’s a story about a problematic father-daughter relationship, written with both bite and compassion, and with cutting and poignant observations about the motivations behind parenting and charity – which are not always selfless.

Geir Tangen Geir Tangen (b. 1970) is from Øystese in Hardanger but has lived in Haugesund since 1996. He trained as a general education teacher and has worked in lower secondary schools since 1996. He has also worked as a freelance journalist for radio, TV and newspapers since 1990, and writes short stories in addition to his crime novels. The trilogy about Viljar Ravn Gudmundsson and Lotte Skeisvoll has been translated into several languages. He has written a number of crime stories for both young people and adults in recent years that have been published in various anthologies. In the summer of 2019, he started work on a brand new crime series. The first book, Hour of the Wolf, is expected to be published in 2021. 12

Agnes Lovise Matre Agnes Lovise Matre (1966) is an adjunct professor and author from Haugesund. Matre teaches Norwegian, social subjects and English at Hauge Middle School, in Haugesund. As well as being a teacher, she previously worked as a freelance journalist. She was also a member of the interim board who started Forfatterforbundet, the Norwegian Authors Union. She debuted with her novel Stroke My Hair in 2012. In Autumn 2016, her novel Naked Truth was published by Gyldendal Litteratur. 15

The Hagen Case

Magnus Braaten and Kenneth Fossheim 31 October 2018. Anne-Elisabeth Hagen disappears from her home in Lørenskog in the Oslo suburbs. Her husband, billionaire Tom Hagen, arrives home to a ransom note demanding nine million euros paid in a cryptocurrency. According to the letter, if he contacts the police or press his wife will be killed. Hagen defies the threat and police investigate the case in secret. They don’t ask for the public’s help until ten weeks after Anne-Elisabeth’s disappearance. 28 April 2020. Tom Hagen is arrested by the tactical unit of the Norwegian Police. The police believe he is guilty and that he has been misleading them the entire time. However, the Court of Appeal refuses the police’s application to hold Hagen in custody, believing the evidence against him to be too weak. Since then we have heard no more from the police.

Nancy Herz Award-winning campaigner on social issues. Nancy Herz (born 1996) is a Norwegian-Lebanese writer, public speaker, and human rights activist. Herz grew up in Haugesund, but lives in Oslo and is currently studying for a master’s degree in sociology at the University of Oslo. Alongside Amina Bile and Sofia Srour, Herz started the movement known in the media as “the Shameless Girls”, which set about putting negative social control and the fight against shame and cultures of honour on the agenda. In August 2020, General Eirik Kristoffersen became the new Chief of Defence in Norway. For most of his previous career he served in the Armed Forces’ Special Operations Command (FSK) – a legendary military unit with a famously tough selection process. Eirik Kristoffersen Eirik Johan Kristoffersen (b. 1969) is a general who took over as Norway’s Chief of Defence in August 2020. As a young man, he served in the UN force in Lebanon and in the Long Range Reconnaissance and Patrol (LRRP) Squadron. Most of his career has been in the Norwegian Armed Forces’ Special Command (FSK), where he began his specialist training in 1999 and ended as its Commander in 2014.

Kristoffersen has also been Chief of the Norwegian Home Guard and Chief of the Norwegian Army. He was awarded the War Cross with Sword for his leadership during operations in Afghanistan. In 2014 Eirik Kristoffersen was presented with the Defence Gender Equality Award, partly in recognition of his work in establishing an all-female force within FSK. 21

Svein Nyhus Svein Nyhus (b. 1962) was educated at Oslo National Academy of the Arts and has worked as an illustrator of newspapers and magazines. His mixture of easily accessible texts, caricature, curiosity and gravity appeals to adults as much as to children. In recent years, Svein Nyhus has made some of Norway’s best picture books, and has carved out a new genre. His philosophical texts and his bold, beautiful illustrations have reached out to a large and enthusiastic audience. Svein Nyhus has won several awards, among them The Ministry of Culture and Church Affairs’ Prize three times.

Hans Jørgen Sandnes Hans Jørgen Sandnes (born 1979) is a Norwegian illustrator and animator. He has made several animated films based on the children’s songs by Alf Prøysen, all of which have been shown regularly by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation. He has also worked with illustration and animation in a number of other projects focusing on the promotion of culture to children.
