President & VP must face the independent press

T

he government is playing hide-andseek with the media. It has demonstrated an extreme reluctance to host press conferences. The President has developed a preference to speak from the sidelines of events where the press has limited opportunities and scope to question him on important issues. His Vice President, the point-man on the oil and gas s e c t o r, h a s n o t b e e n forthcoming with the media. He is more disposed towards granting selective interviews to social media commentators rather than facing the mainstream press corps. In this game of dodging and hiding from the media, the public is being denied information which is of vital importance to their future. The government has taken a sudden and surprising decision to reserve oil blocks for government-to-government deals. The mainstream media has not been provided with the opportunity to grill the

government on its rationale for this decision. The review of the US$9B Payara development plan is believed to be completed. Yet, nothing is being said as to the outcome of this review. The President has taken to social media to announce local government elections. No press conference has been held with the mainstream media on this important issue. The promise to restore the post-Cabinet Press Conferences is being honoured in the breach. Members of the media have complained of the difficulties in eliciting information and comments from Ministers. The media is the public's watchdog. If the media is being shut out from the opportunity of questioning the government, it means that the public is being deprived of the right to information. We demand that the government fulfills its obligation of hosting regular press conferences. The President should set an example.
