Govt. would receive global support for pushing Exxon to renegotiate lopsided deal ...it has the opportunity to be a champion of the people instead of a shield for oil giant - New York-based lawyer A press conference is warranted!
These imported 4x4 hallow section steel frames could have been fabricated right here in Guyana as part of local content, giving our Guyanese brothers and sisters a bite of the pie. Instead, the government is allowing the oil companies to import these steel frames by the hundreds at exorbitant prices and Guyana will ultimately repay as cost oil. The freight and transportation costs alone for each frame, Guyanese could have built, delivered and still made a profit. This is how our leaders are managing our oil sector in a 50/50 profit sharing business.

We are managing a US trillion-dollar oil and gas sector. Little is being heard from Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo who is spearheading this sector. Guyana signed a Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) in 2016 which the PPP/C condemned and promised to renegotiate in order to get more benefits. Jagdeo, however, approved the 3rd and 4th projects for ExxonMobil’s affiliate, Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL) without correcting the mistakes made in Liza 1 and Liza 2. More importantly, he did not eke out an additional blind cent from those two projects to help the majority of people starving in this nation. Nor did he secure full liability coverage to protect the country in the event of an oil spill disaster. He failed, also, to obtain ring-fencing provisions, environmental
protection, taxes, etc. Now Jagdeo is moving to approve the 5th project – the largest thus far. In addition, he is utilising a World Bank loan to pay for a review of this project. Guyana learnt about this through a statement issued by the government. No press conference was held to update the nation as to what they can expect to gain from this project. Jagdeo is also embarking on a US$2 billion gas-to-energy project without an updated financial feasibility study. Again, neither he nor Winston Brassington has hosted a press conference to address the nation on this project. Taking all of this into consideration, we believe another day should not elapse without President Irfaan Ali hosting a press conference to let the Guyanese people know just where he is taking this country and its non-renewable wealth.
