Canadian-based G Mining Ventures (GMIN) has
issued an Expression of Interest (EOI) inviting transportation service providers to support its ongoing Oko West gold project in Region Seven, Guyana. GMIN recently announced that it will be acquiring another fellowCanadianfirmthatoperatesinGuyana Thatdealcansee thecompanyearningoverUS$30billionbasedonacombined resourceof7-millionounces,andgoldpricesremainingabove US$4,500perouncewhenproductionbegins.
GMIN is currently the 100% owner of the 4.64 million ounces Oko West Gold Project located in Cuyuni mining district.This project was added to GMIN’s portfolio back in 2024followingabusinesscombinationwithfellowCanadian firm,ReunionGoldCorp.valuedatUS$638million(C$875 million).Inasimilarmove,GMINlastweekannouncedthatit entered into a definitive agreement with another Canadian company, G2 Goldfields for approximately US$2.2 billion (C$3billion).Theprojectislocatedabout95kilometreswest ofGeorgetown,isanewgolddiscoverysituatedsouthofthe historic Oko district and accessible via the Puruni road networkandriverroutesfromBarticaandItaballi.
As construction advances, the company issued the EOI seekingreliabletransportproviderstomovepersonnelalong keyroutesincludingGeorgetowntoParika,OgleandTimehri. The services will cover the supply of transportation such as SUVsandcoasterbusesforaperiodof18months.
According to the EOI, interested parties must meet compliance requirements, including valid business registration, National Insurance Scheme (NIS) and Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) compliance, along with a tax identification certificate. Notably, submissions are due by May3,2026,afterwhichshortlisted,applicantswillbeinvited toparticipateinarequestforquotationprocess.
With the latest acquisition, the two neighbouring properties will be merged into a single mining hub with a combined 7-million-ounce gold resource base, including 2.3 million ounces in measured and indicated resources and inferredresources. Thecombineddevelopmentisexpectedto produce more than 500,000 ounces of gold annually over its life, with Oko West contributing approximately 350,000 ouncesperyearandOko-Ghanieaddinganestimated228,000 ounces annually This level of output is expected to create a large-scale,low-costtier-1goldmininghubinoneofthemost prospectiveemerginggolddistrictsintheworld.
GMIN’sacquisitionofG2andbusinesscombinationwith Reunion to secure and combine the assets is pegged at US$2.838 billion. Acquiring G2 will expand GMIN’s footprintinGuyanaby293km²(squarekilometres),creatinga combinedcontiguouslandpackageofover362km².

The anticipated Life of Mine (LOM) average gold productionofapproximately350,000ouncesofgoldannually from GMIN’s OkoWest Project and 228,000 ounces of gold annuallyfromG2’sOko-GhanieProjectintoasingleproject brings the potential to produce over 500,000 ounces of gold annuallyonaLOMaveragebasis.

If Guyanese were already struggling when global conditionswererelativelystable,whathappensnowwhen thoseexternalpressuresintensify?Whatcushionexistsfor the average citizen? What buffers have been built, not in speeches or policy papers, but in real, tangible relief for families?

The deeper issue is not simply external shocks, but internalpreparedness.
What has been done over the past three years of booming revenues to build resilience among the most vulnerable?Wherearetheaggressiveinterventionsinfood production, storage, and distribution that could soften the blow of imported inflation? Why does a country experiencing an oil windfall still find itself so exposed to basicsupplydisruptions?
These are not academic questions. They are questions rootedinsurvival.

Saturday April 11 on the Aurora Gold Mines (AGM) solar farm displays current evidence of my advocacy of solar power instead of the expensive Gas-to-Energy (GtE) project, which enriches foreign investors andcontractors.
12 years ago, I set up a small home solar power system, which still supplies my needs. It cost US$5 per watt then with almost no maintenance, except that I changed my original leadacidbatteries,whichlasted4 years,forLiFePO4batteries, which are still going strong. In 2021, when the GtE was
said to cost US$900M, I advised friends and they installed solar power at US$2 per watt1. This same US$900M could have bought 5 kW solar power systems, each costing US$10,000 for 90,000 householdsacrossGuyana!
Each of such a system could power the usual household appliances
Currentsolarpowersystems are8kWforUS$1.8perwatt withbatteriesandcanpower fridge, freezer, washing machine, microwave, water pump,ACs,deliverpuresine wave electricity to sensitive appliances like computing equipment, and even export to the GPLgrid, as I see the
GEAistryingtoencourage.
The significance of the AGM solar farm is that it is buying 49 4 MW for US$100millionwithbattery power
Thisstilltranslatestojust over US$2 per watt with battery power and minimal maintenance. Compare this with the GtE for 300 MW, which will cost at least US$2.1 billion, and more likely,US$3billion.
This translates to US$710 per watt not even counting operation, maintenance and emissions.
My hydropower estimate in 2021ofUS$15perwattwas justified when the 150 kW Kato hydropower was
reported to have cost the government US$2 3 million2, which is just over US$15perwatt.
We can all agree that AGM is here to profit as muchastheycan. They will not invest foolishly in powering their operations, or wait for the GtEtogiveenergy;andnow they won’t have to import fossil fuel in these times of shortage. Whereas, we have a Government that stubbornly and consistently loses money, and that plans to import and contribute to fossil fuel use in the long term.

The President is right about one thing: this is not a simplistic issue. It requires serious thinking and constant engagement. But seriousness must also be measured by outcomes,notintentions.

very popular among Guyanese as I discovered engaging them in multiple trips in Suriname when he wasPolicehead,Opposition Leader, and President Guyanese who I engaged in Guyanathismonth,manyin the greater Skeldon area, as well as many in NY spoke well of Santokhi Many
Indo-Guyanese with Surinamese nationality voted for him although they expresseddisappointmentin t h e s l o w p a c e o f development during his tenure.
Itwasanhonourtoknow Chan and to exchange ideas fromthemultipleencounters we had including several one-on-one engagements when he was OL and President. We met multiple timesinSurinameatofficial functions and at social gatherings. And we met several times in Delhi, Indore (Madya Pradesh for
PBD), Georgetown, and New York. Friends in Delhi and in Guyana and NY rememberhimfondly They, like Guyanese, mourn his passing as he developed close ties with India. Chan has maintained a long relationship with Guyana and was very supportive of PresidentAli.Hefocusedon regional cooperation. President Ali engaged him and his successor to strengthen trade and other ties especially on the border issue.
I engaged Chan for articles I was researching. But he was not easily persuaded on strategies I enunciated even when they were in his favour And like several other Guyanese, I helped to organise and or contributed financially to receptions hosted in NY when he was President Guyanese were on the planning and organising committee that hosted receptions for Chan in NY everyyearhewasPresident. ThereisasmallSurinamese community in NY, most settled in Queens and Long Island and the Brooklyn borderofQueens. Thus,not surprisingly,moreGuyanese than Surinamese patronized his events in Queens. They contributedtohisre-election campaignasdidsomeIndoTrinidadians. He thanked us all at all of the fundraising

Chan’s tenure as
President,onefive-yearterm (2020-25), left an indelible mark on political discourse and national development. He became President at a time when the treasury was bankrupt and the country faced huge debts. He had to
payments on outstanding debts while balancing the annual budgets; revenue intakesweretight. And foreign aid was limited. Nevertheless, Chan managed the economy well though the public was dissatisfied with tight government spending. He was generally viewed as trans
charismatic, and often he
was recognized as a champion for the working class, promoter of national unity He loved to sing Indian songs and chutney
Many refer to him as the country’s first Indian President under the new constitution, marking a significant shift in the nation’s political landscape. His election was celebrated by Indo-Surinamese and Indo-Guyanese in USA; his defeatwasadisappointment. He was admired among Guyanese for his simplicity anddowntoearthdemeanor He was also viewed as a sharppoliticalstrategistwho navigated intense racialised political dynamics in Suriname.
Santokhi has made rich contributions to national progress. And he has left a legacy that is highly regardedbysupporters.

National Unity (APNU) on FridaywarnedthatGuyana’s democracy is at risk should the Government of Guyana f a i l t o h e e d t h e recommendations made by theEuropeanUnionElection Observer Mission (EU EOM)onthe2025elections.

on Friday that the observationsmadebytheEU EOM are deeply concerning
while noting that its recommendations ought to be implemented well ahead of the next elections which areduein2030.
“The European Union Election Observer Mission reportmakesitclearthatour electoral environment is affectedbyseriousstructural weaknesses that, if left unaddressed, will continue to erode public trust and weaken democracy in Guyana This is not something that can be

The 21-member CRC was legislated in 2022 and formed in 2024 to engage in public consultations including on electoral matters.Notwithstanding,its work was delayed due to logistical and financial challenges.
On Friday, Dr Todd reminded that among the issues identified was the use of State resources and the unfair advantage it presents. He reminded that the lines b e t w e e n p o l i t i c a l c a m p a i g n i n g a n d government have been blurreddangerouslyasState platforms, public projects and government influence are being used in ways to benefittherulingparty
Dr Todd reminded that themisuseofStateresources is wrong since the public purse belongs to the citizens of Guyana and not to any political organisation. As a result, APNU is calling on the government to implement the EU EOM recommendations with specific attention to the use of State assets for campaign purposes.
“The issue of campaign finance is equally alarming. The current system is outdated, ineffective, and lacks any meaningful enforcement Spending limits are unrealistic, oversight is weak, and transparency is virtually non-existent.Thiscreatesan environment where influence can be bought, where accountability is avoided, and where the playingfieldistilted.
APNU is calling for the urgent establishment of an independentbodytooversee campaign financing, along with modern legislation that ensures full disclosure of political funding and spending The Guyanese peopledeservetoknowwho is financing political power and how that power is being sustained, ” Dr Todd stressed.
The attorney noted too that immediate attention should be paid to the media environment, noting that all political parties ought to have access to the State media which is funded by taxpayers’dollars.
HesaidtoothattheState media have been operating unfairly and unbalanced adding that instead of being used to serve all citizens, it h a s b e e n u s e d disproportionatelytobenefit the ruling party while limiting the visibility of others.
APNU posited that by restricting access to balanced information, the democratic process is undermined.As a result, the party is calling for binding rules that will guarantee equitable airtime and fair accessforallpoliticalparties on the State-owned platforms.
Further, relative to electoral reform Dr Todd said that the need for meaningful constitutional and electoral reform cannot be overstated. He reminded t h e m e d i a t h a t a Constitutional Reform Commissionexists,butthere hasbeenslowprogress.

Yet, in our society, particularly in Guyana, we appear to be losing the traditionsofshowingrespect forthedead.Andthislossof reverence for the dead, and sensitivity toward grieving families, is also translating into a dangerous disregard fortheliving.
Butthereisalsoareverse sidetotheproblem.Atsome funerals, it is not passing motorists who are inconsiderate, but mourners themselves Roads are blocked for long periods while vehicles are parked haphazardly across lanes, loudgatheringsspillintothe streets,andconfusionreigns as other road users are left stranded. Respect for the dead should never mean contempt for everyone else tryingtopass.
There are also occasions whendrinkingbecomespart of the funeral atmosphere and judgment quickly disappears. Some mourners becomeloud,disorderlyand wholly unconcerned that their behaviour is impeding traffic and creating danger forpedestriansandmotorists alike Grief should not become an excuse for recklessness or public disorder
Nowhere is this more evident than on our roadways.
Hardly a week passes without reports of fatal crashes,recklessovertaking, speeding, drunken driving andpedestriansstruckdown. Families are shattered in an instant. Lives are cut short because too many treat the road as a battlefield and drivingasacontest.
The death toll on our highways and streets continues to mount. Each statisticrepresentsamother, father,child,siblingorfriend whose absence leaves pain thatcannotbemeasured.
Yet too often, there is little public outrage We shake our heads for a moment, read the headlines, and move on until the next t r a g e d y o c c u r s Recklessness has become normalised. Impatience has b e c o m e a c c e p t e d Carelessness has become routine.
What is the country coming to? How do we explain this indifference to the daily carnage taking placeonourroads?
Perhapsithassomething to do with the decline in respect for the dead. That lossofrespecttranslatesinto alossofrespectforlifeitself.
Therecklessnesssooften displayed on our roads is closely linked to this growing disrespect for the dead.
A society that cannot pause for a funeral procession, lower its music, slow its speed or show
simple courtesy to those in mourning is a society that is alsolosingregardforhuman life itself. When patience, restraint and consideration disappear in moments of death,theyareunlikelytobe present in moments of driving The same selfishness that leads a motoristtoovertakeahearse or a mourner to block a roadway without concern is the selfishness that fuels speeding, dangerous overtaking and careless driving that continue to claiminnocentlives.
When haste is more important than safety, when arriving a few minutes earlier matters more than another person’s life, this is theresult.
When selfishness outweighs responsibility, thisindifferencewillfollow
The failure to show reverence for life can often betracedbacktothedecline inrespectforthedead.
And this may be one of thereasonswhysofewseem genuinely troubled by the fact that so many are being killedonourroadways.

Why can’t Guyana have commissions of inquiry of such quality; men and women of that independent and fearless disposition? No country should be this handicapped. Fewarethemenandwomen here who could be proud of theproductsofinquiriesthat havebeenseenhere.
A key finding of the Southport’s CoI was that therewas“anabsenceofrisk ownership.” Translations: those who failed to step up,
report or speak out or act on what was pending, then becamearealtragedy,made sure that their fingerprints were scrubbed clean of any association. All I do is urge my fellow citizens to look back in time and recall what wasaragingfurnaceandthat is now imprinted in the memory (and history of Guyana) as the Madhia School Dormitory Inferno. Judge, Nicholas Hing joined 16 other World Archery International Judges and World Archery Americas Continental Judges for the First Stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup in the city of Puebla, Mexico, which ran from April7to12.
The Archery World Cup is an Olympic qualifier which will be held in 5 stages, with the first one being completed in Puebla, Mexico. The others will be held in Shanghai, China in May; Antalya, Turkiye in June; Madrid, Spain in July and finally in Saltillo, MexicoinSeptember
This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the Hyundai Archery World Cup, which featured archers
fromover30countries.
Mr Hing was the first Guyanesetohavejudgedata World Cup Qualifier event, along with a few other judges, under the leadership of International Judge and WAA Secretary General Sergio Font Milian, and his Deputy Chair Shannon Russel-Cowan.

Moresecurityandpizzazz stop that from happening nowadays. Ihavegonetoten Formula1GrandPrixracesin all,sofar,asIhavegonetoa few outside of England since s t o p p i n g p l a y i n g internationalcrickettoo.
Formula 1 Grand Prix races back-in-the-day were almost numbing, bodytrembling even, especially back in the 1970s and 1980s, even1990s,sincethenoiseof about 20 roaring and highrevving engines had to be
experiencedtobeunderstood andappreciated. Sometimes, even in the VIP suites, one had to wear noice-cancelling headphones.
Butwhatexperiences.
Nowadays,theFormula1 Grand Prix cars are much more quiet, noise-abatement friendly, but obviously way fastertoo.
