Gun violence in Guyana has become an increasingly urgentissue,onethatthreatensnotonlylives,butthefabric of communities and the nation’s overall sense of security Once considered sporadic and isolated, firearm-related crimes have grown more frequent, more brazen, and more devastating.
Overthepastfewyears,Guyanahaswitnessedanuptick in armed robberies, gang-related shootings, and even domesticincidentsthatescalatetofatalviolenceduetothe ready availability of guns. Each report, whether from Georgetown, rural villages, or border towns reveals a troubling trend: illegal firearms are far too accessible, and enforcementmeasuresarestrugglingtokeepup.
There are multiple root causes fueling this crisis. First andforemostistheporousnessofGuyana’sborders,which allows the smuggling of illegal weapons from neighboring countries. Weak enforcement infrastructure and limited resourcesinruralareasmakeiteasierfortheseweaponsto circulatewithoutconsequence.
Secondly, poverty and youth unemployment remain pressing concerns. For many young people, crime, often facilitatedbyaccesstofirearmsoffersafalsesenseofpower and a dangerous path to economic survival. The rise of organized gangs and criminal networks, some with transnational ties, further exacerbates the issue, dragging youngpeopleintocyclesofviolenceandretaliation.
While legislation exists to penalise gun crimes harshly, enforcementoftenfallshort,allowingperpetratorstoescape accountability Corruption and inefficiencies in the justice system can undermine even the most well-intentioned policies.
To effectively tackle gun violence, Guyana needs a multi-prongedapproach:
1. Stronger Border Control: Greater investment in border security and surveillance technology is essential. International partnerships with Brazil, Suriname, and Venezuelamustbestrengthenedtocurbarmstrafficking.

As a child protection advocate working with ChildLink Inc , I have witnessed first-hand the silent struggles carried by many boys who have experienced sexual abuse or other forms of harm. This is why the development of boys as advocates is not only important; it is essential; however, boys do not automatically become advocates; they are shaped into them through safe spaces, consistent guidance, and environments where their voices are respected ratherthandismissedorseen asaweakness.
Whenaboyistaughtthat his experiences matter, that his emotions are valid, and that his story can create change,hebeginsapowerful journey from silence to strength- we've seen it, we'veheardit-theimpactof real stories coming from boyswithrealexperiences.
Advocacy begins with being heard It grows through trust And it is sustained through empowerment.
For boys who have experienced sexual abuse or any form of violence, advocacy can become a pathway to healing, an outlet, or a discovery of purpose. It allows them to reclaim control over narratives that were once defined by fear, shame, or secrecy When a boy speaks out, he not only begins to
heal himself but also becomesabeaconforothers who are still suffering in silence. His voice becomes evidence that survival is possibleandthatdignitycan be restored regardless of one's circumstances, experiences or story It becomes proof that the endings of stories can changemid-way-inreallife too.
However, it is important to recognize that boys must never be forced into advocacy before they are ready. Healing must always comefirst.Supportsystems, counselors, caregivers, educators, and child protection organizations, mustworktogethertoensure that boys are emotionally preparedandfullysupported before they are encouraged to share their experiences publicly or even within structuredadvocacyspaces. The importance of boys as advocates also extends beyond personal healing

Boys' Voices Matter in this continued fight against sexual violence and abuse, this isn't a "they problem" "not our problem," "only girls problem," or "boys don't experience abuse problem".
Unfortunately, the reality, is that this is a very real problem that deserves the same urgency, understanding and listening ear as any other national issue.
