The murder of women

Yesterday'schillingmurderofawomanatthehandsof her estrange husband, the maiming of their son and the ending of his own life evoked the usual outrage from citizens.

ItgoeswithoutsayingthatdomesticviolenceinGuyana has reached an alarming and heartbreaking level, with far toomanywomenlosingtheirlivesatthehandsofthevery men who once vowed to love and protect them. Hardly a month passes without headlines of yet another woman brutally murdered by her partner These killings are not isolated“domesticdisputes”theyarethetragicoutcomesof a deep-rooted culture of gender inequality, silence, and insufficientstateresponse.

Behind every case is a story of warning signs ignored: threatsdismissedas“relationshipproblems,”bruiseshidden behind closed doors, pleas for protection that were inadequately addressed. Too often, women remain trapped incyclesofabuseduetofear, economicdependence, orlack of confidence in the system. The results are devastating, families destroyed, children orphaned, communities traumatised.

Guyana cannot afford to normalise these tragedies. Domestic violence is not a private matter; it is a national crisis.Lawsexist,butenforcementremainsuneven.Shelters andsupportservicesaretoofew, underfunded, anddifficult to access, especially in rural areas. Police and judicial systemsmustbemoreproactive, notwaitingforviolenceto escalatetomurderbeforeintervening.Equallyimportantis cultural change. As a society, we must challenge the toxic notions of masculinity that fuel control and violence. Men must be engaged as allies in prevention, not just cast as perpetrators.Schools, religiousinstitutions, andcommunity leadersallhavearoleinshapingattitudesthatrejectabuse andpromoterespect, equality, andhealthyrelationships.

Friends, neighboursandcommunitiesmustbeeducated abouttheredflagsofdomesticproblems.Whentheseflags appear, there should be a response. It is unfortunate when neighbours and friends wait too late before they intervene. However, individual responses are never going to be good enough to make a difference. What is needed is a truly national effort to educate the Guyanese people about the dangers of domestic abuse. A simple quarrel can easily escalate into murder Thus, interventions need to be made, especially in troubled relationships. In this regard, we feel there is an important role for religious and community organisations. These organisations should be pro-active in seeking out troubled relationships since very often frustration builds up when there is no resort to someone to talk to or someone whose help can be sought to resolve a problem.Counselingisalsoneeded.

Poll results from a scientific poll

DearEditor,

I wish to extend my sinceregratitudeto Stabroek News for its article dated August 25, 2025, titled “Analysis: Three-way race seen for elections.” Itwasa timely and comprehensive assessment of Guyana's political landscape before the September general elections.

Inconnectionwiththis,I was privileged to review the results of a poll conducted across all ten regions of Guyana by a group of University of Guyana students, with funding support from a private New York–based organization currently exploring investment opportunities in thecountry

The purpose of the poll was to capture a truly representative snapshot of the electorate, ensuring the voices of all segments of society irrespective of wealth, age, education, ethnicity, or political experience—were heard. A total of 4,900 individuals were interviewed, with demographic weighting guided by data from the Bureau of Statistics. The aggregated responses are summarized in the table provided.

KeyFindings

Ÿ isprojectedto PPPC secure victory with 212,411 votes (44%),positioningit t o r e t a i n t h e Presidency but not the majority in the NationalAssembly

Ÿ isexpectedto APNU receive 164,878 votes(34%),thereby maintaining its role a s t h e m a i n opposition and securing the spot as the Leader of the Opposition.

Ÿ , the newest WIN entrantintoGuyana's

political sphere, is projected to achieve animpressive99,724 votes (21%) a remarkable outcome forafirst-timeparty

Ÿ AFC and smaller p a r t i e s a r e collectively expected tosecure7,395votes (justover1%)

If translated into seats, these results suggest a new National Assembly configured broadly along theselines.

P r e l i m i n a r y

Interpretation of the Results

1 Valid votes are expected to rise by 5% from 2020, mainly in the hinterland.

Region 6 (Corentyne) shows minimal growth, likely due to migration to NorthAmerica over the past fiveyears.

2.APNUisprojectedto lose about 53,000 votes to WIN; PPPC about 19,000. WIN also draws primarily from first-time voters in 2025.

3 . H i s t o r i c a l significance: WIN's projected near-100,000 votes represent an unprecedentedbreakthrough for a new party in Guyana. By comparison, only the United Force (TUF) in 1964

(≈28,000votes)andtheAFC in 2011 (≈33,333 votes) previously achieved significant disruption of the two-partydominance.

4. Youthandpoverty factors: WIN's momentum surpasses the AFC's 2011 peak largely due to strong support among voters aged 18–34 and amid high national poverty levels (≈40%). Many respondents e x p r e s s e d d e e p dissatisfaction with both APNU(criticizedforsigning the Exxon oil contract) and thePPPC(accusedoffailing torenegotiateterms).

WIN's appeal, they reported, is driven by its philanthropic record and the credibility of its leadership, particularly Mr Mohamed,

whom they view as a leader whodeliversonpromises.

Voters'MainConcerns Respondents highlighted threepressingissuesshaping theirchoicesin2025:

Ÿ Persistent and high foodinflationandthe escalating cost-ofliving.

Ÿ Weaknesses within the police force and risingcrime.

Ÿ Endemic corruption within the public service, where too f e w b e n e f i t disproportionately from national resources.

PPP/C

has outdone what the PNC

and AFC have done in all their years in governance

DearEditor, Guyanese are familiar with the saying, “Time and Tide wait for None.” The ancient proverb originated from St Marher's 1225 work, "And te tide and te time... schal beon iblescet". This phrase was later used around 1395 in Geoffrey Chaucer's “Prologue to the Clerk's Tale.” President Dr IrfaanAli did not hesitate to announce the 2025 election date when it was officially due.Whoready, ready, aswe say in Guyana. Like the proverbialscout'smotto, the PPP/Cis“alwaysready”and leaves no room to be caught in any unguarded moment.

President Irfaan Ali and the PPP/C always do the right thing. Guyanese are assured ofthat.

Unlike the APNU/AFC, the PPP/C did not stall for any right time to come for any favourable tide. The PNC's “band of cabals” had to“pussyfoot”anddragtheir feet through mud, misery and many misgivings for some eighteen months before settling on a 2020 election date Former President Granger and his

team of political malingers refused to demit office after losing to the PPP/C vote of no-confidence motion in December 2018. His merry men and women included thelikesofTrotman,Hughes and Williams who are all brilliant attorneys! History has shown that you cannot dependontheAPNUnorthe AFC to do anything legally right!

The PNC, AFC and all their lawful luminaries who are acclaimed experts and professionals in the proficiency of legal affairs, had more than their mouths shut when the Caribbean CourtofJustice(CCJ)slamdunked their frivolous, vexatious and ludicrous arguments that 33 is not the absolute majority of 65 Theyridiculouslycontended alsothat, formerMemberof Parliament Charrandas Persaud's ability to legally cast his dissenting vote on December 21, 2018 was not valid Of course, the honourable CCJ chastised their rancorous case and revoked their venomous argument. How can you trust these parties to ever

make any legitimate decisions?

BLUNT BLUNT

Theexecutionof TeekadaiSolomon

The murder of Teekadai Solomon by her husband is not an isolated tragedy, it is part of a bloody epidemic that is ripping through Guyana.

Let's be blunt: women are being slaughtered by the men who they share their homes and lives with, and the country is failing to stop it.

Teekadai was not the first and unless something changes, she will not be the last. Domestic violence has spiraled beyond control, yet the national response remains timid. Police routinely ignore threats until it's too late. Courts grant restraining orders that abusers laugh at. Shelters are few, underfunded and inaccessible and communities stay silent until a woman is buried.

This is murder in slow motion, the warning signs are always there. The violence builds, the threats escalate and then another life is snuffed out.

Calling it “domestic” softens the reality: these are executions of women, carried out by men who believe that they own them.

Teekadai Solomon's death must shake this country awake. We can no longer pretend this is private business or bad luck. It is a national emergency. Until Guyana confronts domestic violence with the seriousness it demands, more women will die and their blood will stain all of us.

The Old and the New

Guyana is changing Everyone says so. You see the roads, the high-rises, the bright paint of new businesses, and you cannot deny it. A certain kind of developmentistakingplace. But when you pause, you must ask: development for whom? And for how long will there be a Guyana that belongstoitspeople, andnot only to those who already possess?

It has always been believed that Guyana was a largeplace, avastemptiness in which each man might have his share. But this was belief, nothing more In reality, it is the old story: a small group, clever with friendship and with the use of names, takes more and more. What was once wide and abundant begins to shrink into private holdings. And you see again what history has always taught: that a country is not shared, butconsumed.

This consuming has its peculiarity In a normal capitalist society, one expects that competition decides who survives. In Guyana, it is not competition It is connection.Amanisrichnot because he has outworked

another, but because he has shaken the right hands, whispered to the right ears. Heisclosetopower.Thatis enough.

It is striking, too, that many of these new rich are not of the ruling party. They are not men formed in the party's struggles. They are outsiders who have learned that influence lies not in party loyalty but in proximity to those who govern.Bythismethod, they have inserted themselves into the centre. From there, wealthhasflowed.

Guyana has always had itsoligarchs.Underthelong PNC rule, even with the language of socialism, there was a handful of families who controlled trade, property, and the very possibility of commerce They flourished when the country sank And they flourishstill.

But today they are no longeralone.Anewclasshas risen—moreaggressive, less burdened by history, less polite about where their fortunes come from. They are not content to exist beside the old oligarchs They mean to replace them. The old oligarchy now discovers what the poor had

always known: that power, onceturnedagainstyou, has no memory of your usefulness.

History, again, provides its lesson. These groups, whether old or new, do not only am

changedthepoliticalculture in Guyana. 'Me, I stayin faar, ahdoanhaveaheadfuh heights.'

One thing is for sure, though: Mohamed has contributed to the whole local political playbook being rewritten. It was always PPP and PNC. For the first time, three other letters in the alphabet are now making the rounds, disturbing the atmosphere. WIN! WIN! WIN! 'Jagdeo sehdathegatalldevotesdat he need in haan ' For someonewhohaseverything undercontrol, heshouldgive hismouthaneededrest. His lips tremble more visibly, and he can't control the spittle anymore. There was a word that enjoyed much use in political circles until Rev Jim Jones sent it underground, made it unchic. Itwascharisma. If itisn'tcharismathatsticksto Azruddin Mohamed, then what is it? The scent of walking magnolia? Atouch of human drama? The arrival of a political supernova?

A feeling of irresistible euphoria? I don't know which one it is; haven't the faintest idea if it's all those rushedthroughawasherand dryer

I still don't get it, am struggling. There must be something to explain the mystery and magnetism of the man Mohamed. The ordinary folk of Guyana don't come out in their numbers to hear a visiting thinktank swathed in blue.

All the poor people of Guyana know is that their tank is empty, and that the PPP kicked them on their fannywhentheypleadedfor a little help in the last five years. Now from leader to minister run coming with buckets of cash and baskets of promises. From the PPP and Jagdeo's perspective, it's: 'Let's kiss up and mek up.' Too late, too late, shall be the cry As a kindness to the people who love to hate Mohamed (the PPP), I left out too little. Aw shucks, whypileiton?

Now there is Mohamed sitting in one community after another wreathed in self-confidence. He should get a pipe to complete the picture of total contempt for his former friends on Robb Street,VlissingenRoad, and StateHouse.

Legal showdown over GECOM’s ballot symbol decision

TheHighCourtcaseover the constitutionality of the decision by the Guyana Election Commission (GECOM) to exclude Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) party got underway before Chief Justice (Ag) NavindraSinghonTuesday

The Fixed Date

Application filed on behalf ofKrystalHadassahFisher,a national candidate of the Forward Guyana Movement (FMG) contends that GECOM's exclusion of her partyfromballotsinRegions Seven, Eight, and Nine

v i o l a t e s m u l t i p l e constitutionalrights.

According to Fisher, guarantees including the right to vote, equal suffrage, non-discrimination, and proportional representation.

Lawyers representing the party and GECOM

presented arguments Attorney for FGM, Dr VivianWilliams, arguedthat GECOM's exclusionary practice violates both the Constitution and the RepresentationofthePeople Act.

Accordingtothelawyer, GECOM has violated the fundamental right of Guyanese to vote. He noted that the procedure adopted by GECOM that omits the Lists of Candidates contesting the National Elections from ballots in certain regions “What GECOMisdoingiscreating a situation where some regions of the country, just have basic access, not the premium access that some otherregionshavethatgives them greater access, that allows for greater and more robust participation in the democraticprocess, andthat created unequal citizens,” Dr Williamssaid.

While Article 160(2) of Guyana's Constitution says that Parliament may make provision for geographical constituencies, Dr Williams said such a provision would not truly override the national right to vote which must be consistent with international conventions “The Constitution contemplatesvotingwithout g e o g r a p h i c a l constituencies…the framers were not mad men,” he added.

Appearing on behalf of the state was Attorney General Anil Nandlall SC whileAttorney,Arudranauth

Gossai represented GECOM. They told the court that GECOM was not at fault. The lawyers noted

SC

that it was FGM and Assembly of Liberty and Prosperity(ALP)thatdidnot submit geographical constituency candidates for several regions “If you chose not to field a candidate, how are you blamingGECOMforthat,it was not GECOM that excluded…?Itwasyouwho excluded yourself because youdidnothavealist.”

For his part, by tracing the historical evolution of our electoral system, from First Past The Post, before independence, then Proportional Representation (PR), then in 1980 when the country introduced the regional election process, Gossai explained that between 1999 and 2001 when the Constitution was amended again, they produced the geographic componentofthePRsystem.

Nandlall noted that the argumentthatalargepartof G u y a n a i s b e i n g disenfranchised is misplaced “The lawyer (Williams) made a lot of emotive arguments about deprivation of Amerindian right to vote, and two thirds of the country will not be allowed to vote, nonsense. And I detailed also the various cases that examined our electoral system in recenttimes.”

“Thesystemensuresthat every elector is allowed to exercise their respective franchise. But obviously, if you want to exercise your franchise for a particular party; that party must be participatingintheelections and the system is structured in such a way that the geographic constituencies are 10 in number across Guyana,” Nandlall told reporters outside the courtroom.

Hestressedthatcontrary to claims of discrimination against the indigenous people; they will be able to cast their ballots. “Those Amerindianswillvote. They will just not vote for a party thatisnotcontestinginthose regions and it is the party, strangely and ironically that chose not to contest in regions, seven, eight and nine. So it's the party, in my view, that is discriminating against two thirds of Guyana. It's not the other wayaround,”hesaid.

Leading transparency organisations in the Caribbeanhaveofferedstrongsupport for Guyana’s civil society’s Access to Information campaign, with the Trinidad and Tobago Transparency Institute (TTTI) and Jamaica’s National Integrity Action (NIA) commending “the sustained, principled, and peaceful actions undertaken by journalists, civil society actors, members of parliament, trade unions, and concerned citizens in Guyana, who have collectively brought to light systemic non-compliance by the [Guyana] Office of the CommissionerofInformation.”

Thetransparencyinternational chapters expressed “grave concern” about the failureoftheexecutivetoengage meaningfully with civil society on this constitutional matter. The organisations noted “with particular concernthedocumentedabsence of public reporting, operational transparency, and meaningful responsiveness by the Commissioner’s Office,” stating these deficiencies “contravene the letter and spirit of the Access to Information Act but also undermine the rule of law and citizens’confidenceinpublic

institutions.”

Guyana’scampaigncoordinator,ChristopherRamsaid theorganisationssharedtheir “grave concern over the failure of the office of the president to acknowledge formal communicationfromcivilsocietyactors-despiterepeated outreach and well-substantiated documentation, signals aworryingerosionofparticipatory governance and civic engagement.”

Ram has welcomed the support.“Thisvalidateswhat we’ve been saying - the government is failing in its constitutional and statutory obligations. When regional transparency experts note thatoursituationundermines ‘the rule of law and citizens’ confidence,’ that should be a wake-up call.”The organisations described the situation as “a profound test - not only of Guyana’s commitment to constitutional governance, but of the region’scollectiveresolveto defend democratic rights in the face of institutional opacity.”The regional organisations pledged to “fully support” judicial remedies and international accountability mechanisms, “urge the government of Guyana to respond to the

concernsraisedimmediately,” andcalledonCARICOMand regionalinstitutionstomonitor the situation.

This backing strengthens the local campaign’s documentation that despite government claims to the UN HumanRightsCommitteethat the Act “continues to be utilised by the public,” the reality is complete dysfunction.TheUNCommitteeitself recommended in May 2024 that Guyana “ensure that the rightofaccesstoinformation canbeeffectivelyexercisedin practice.”

Reiterating the local group’s demands that the government immediately establish functional independence and capacity to the commissioner’s office, Ram pledged that there will be no letupuntilcitizens’rightsare respected, requests for information are processed in a timely manner and the governmentengagescivilsociety on improving the legislation.

Civil society has been up in arms against government and the commissioner of information, Justice (ret’d) CharlesRamsonsnr.,whohas been preventing the release ofcriticalinformationtomembers of the public.

Since March of this year,

chartered accountant and attorney, Christopher Ram, along with civil society and even journalists have been protesting against the reluctance of Ramson to release key information on several matters, includingdocuments that can provide some clarity to the signing of the lopsided 2016oildealwithExxonMobil Guyana for the lucrative Stabroek oil block. At a recent protest, Ram had noted theinformationisnotcritical for transparency only, but could help shape policies for Guyana that can benefit the citizens. The protesters had started their demonstration outside of Ramson’s office but later moved to the Office of President. The protestors argued that the president has the power to not only release theinformationtheyareseeking but also take action against Ramson since he is collecting a salary for doing nothing. To date, the government is yet to release the information or take any action. The government has promised to address the issue after the elections. Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo said that there will be some improvements to the Act once the administration retains government.

Govt.deniesunderminingworkofGYEITI

The Ministry of Natural Resources has denied accusationsthatitisattemptingto displace Policy Forum Guyana (PFG) from its longstanding responsibility for coordinating the selection of civil society representatives to the Multi-Stakeholder Group (MSG) of the Guyana Extractive Industries TransparencyInitiative(GYEITI).

InapressreleaseonMonday, PFG said it had become aware of this development in August2025throughtheEITI International Secretariat.According to the Ministry of Natural Resources website, thetaskofmanagingthecivic selection process was entrustedtoKomalSingh,President of the Private Sector Commission, and the Ministry’sreleaseclaimsthis processcommencedonJanuary29,2025.

However, in a statement onTuesday, the ministry said

while the statement by PFG is profoundly incorrect and undermines the confidence and trust that have been built onallsidesintheEITIimplementation process since 2017, “we must outline the grossviolationanddisregard for the established process by Policy Forum Guyana, which has led to the current situation.”

Accordingtotheministry whenthegovernmentinitially signedontotheEITIin2017, theauthorityresponsiblefor appointing a convenor for each of the three constituencies in the Multi-Stakeholder Group—government, civilsociety, andindustry—was the Minister of Natural Resources, who is also the Champion of EITI Guyana.“Forthosewhomay notbeaware, whencountries sign onto the EITI, they are requiredtoappointa“Champion” to ensure that all pro-

cesses are properly establishedandthattheEITIStandard is complied with at all levels.

Guyana’s current EITI ChampionisMinisterVickram Bharrat,” the statement read. Guyana’s previous EITI Champion appointed Policy Forum Guyana as the ConvenoroftheCivilSociety Constituency for the 2017 Multi-Stakeholder Group.

“This was not a permanent role. It should be noted that the ministry bore all costs related to advertisements to facilitate the process overseen by the Convenor

In 2021, when the tenure ofthefirstMulti-Stakeholder Group (Steering Committee) expired, the process was repeated, with the Champion appointing Policy Forum Guyana’s role as Civil Society’s Convenor, and again, covering costs related to advertisements.”

This critical step, the Champion initiating the process and appointing the Convenor was ignored in 2025, when Policy Forum Guyana appointed itself as the Civil Society Convenor without following other crucial recommendations to ensure that the EITI implementation process is strengthened in Guyana.

“Notwithstanding these shortcomings, theChampion for EITI Guyana, in support of the full participation of all voices, has selected a facilitator or mediator to help ensure a workable solution is foundintheshortestpossible time.

Theministryreiteratesits commitment to the implementationofEITI,particularly the right of each constituency to appoint its representatives in accordance with the requirements of the standard.

The first is an effort “to eliminate and annihilate the Palestinian people by

“At this moment, they have already invaded big parts of Syria and Lebanon, and the proposals they are making, with the help of the American administration, areaboutrippingawayfrom Syria any form of sovereignty,” Barghouti said. And the third process, he explained, is creating Israeli dominance in the region, which includes “economic hegemony, political hegemony [and] intelligence hegemony over thewholeMiddleEast”.

Isak's desire to leave Newcastle, with Liverpool his destination of choice, guaranteed a boisterous St James' Park atmosphere and itseemedArneSlot'svisitors had buckled as they threw away a flattering 2-0 lead against a side reduced to 10 men by Anthony Gordon's red card in first-half stoppagetime.

But 16-year-old NgumohabrokeNewcastle's hearts shortly after coming

off the bench, thrashing in the winner with a first-time right-foot shot in the 10th minute of stoppage time to become Liverpool's youngesteverscorerandthe fourth youngest in Premier Leaguehistory

It was a sickening blow for Newcastle who were againwithoutoutcaststriker Isak, but who began the gameinsuperbfashion.

Even when the red mist and fate had dealt them multiple blows they still showed great resilience to fight back but it all counted fornothingintheend.

It was a curiously lethargic display by Liverpool though with Mohamed Salah unusually quiet and when Bruno Guimaraes headed past Alisson in the 57th minute the noise levels rose and Newcastle were reenergised.
