One- Guyana’s first petroleum project has fallen from the approved 120,000 barrels a day to under 100,000, according to the latest data published by the Ministry of Natural Resources for the month of June.
This amounts to 20,000 barrels less, which carry an economic value of about US$1.6millionatcurrentoil prices of approximately $80 perbarrel.
According to the production data seen by this newspaper,oilextractionhas been on a steady decline since the latter end of 2025.

TheyseebillionsflowingintotheNaturalResourceFund while government simultaneously racks up billions more in loans. They see a budget exceeding G$1.5 trillion, record withdrawals from the oil fund, and now another US$2.6 billioninborrowingthisyearalone.Itisnotunreasonablefor taxpayerstoaskwhyanoil-richnationmustcontinuepiling debtupondebt.TheIMFitselfofferedanimportantwarning that should not be overlooked. power in 2020 and probably recognised the need for a new vessel to replace the aging MV Barima, which plied the 149-mile, one-way Region One (Barima-Waini) route.
A US$12 7M line of credit offered by the Indian government was secured to buildthenewwatercraft,the MV Ma Lisha, but after arriving in Guyana in April 2023, it could not be used because the Port Kaituma wharf being built since J a n u a r y 2 0 2 3 t o accommodate its mooring, was delayed due to shifting foundational soil, so government ended up pumping millions of dollars to keep the aging Barima plyingtheroute.
In the interest of full disclosure,theMVMaLisha reportedlyahistoric86-mile one-way maiden voyage from Port Georgetown to Kumaka in Region One on 10th August, 2023, arriving after 18 hours, on 11th
August, 2023. After being docked at the KMC Bond in Kumaka, it reportedly departed on 15th August, 2023 for Georgetown. MV Ma Lisha, for all intents and purposes, was rearing and ready to replace the aging MVBarimaoverthreeyears ago, and this is where the element of accountability hasitsgenesis.
At 87 years old, the Barima was like an octogenarian slave who was working in the hot sun since he was fifteen years old and being told by his slave masters that he could not stop working, so he was worked to death. Literally collapsing on the job and nevertoberevived.
Thereisagrowingbelief among some Guyanese that delay in completing construction of the Port Kaituma wharf may have been a major contributing factorbecausetheUS$6.7M (GY$1 4b) construction contract was awarded on
30th December, 2022 to International Import and Supplies – owned by ParmeshwarJagmohan–and construction started on 17th January,2023.Thedesignof thewharfwasdonebyalocal companyCEMCO. Theoriginalconstruction completion date was set for 17th April, 2024, but when structural design flaws e m e rg e d w i t h t h e foundation, it prompted an independent review and plans for a redesign. The completion date was extended to 2026. Linden deserves engagement, not endless political confrontation

The right to peaceful protest is one of the cornerstones of every democratic society It is a constitutionalrightthatmust always be respected, protected and exercised responsibly Those who choose to demonstrate peacefully are entitled to do so, and their voices deserve tobeheardwithdignity
Equally, democracy provides another avenue through which citizens can pursue solutions: direct engagement with those entrustedwithgoverning.
As the people of Region Ten prepare for two significant events on the same day a peaceful demonstration and the Government's Region Ten Public Day we should ask ourselves a question that risesabovepolitics: Whichcourseofactionis more likely to produce tangible benefits for the peopleofLindentoday?
My own view is that whenever national leaders come directly into our community to listen, answer questions, and engage with residents, Linden should
seize that opportunity Communities advance not only by expressing dissatisfaction, but also by placing their concerns directlybeforethosewiththe authoritytomakedecisions.
Throughout my own political life, I have never hesitated to criticise where criticism was warranted Neither have I hesitated to support initiatives that I believe serve the public interest My political decisions have never been about personalities; they have been about what I believe best advances the welfareofourpeople.

Cricket fan urges fair scheduling, better stadium upkeep

Iamacricketfanatheart. I first fell in love with the gameattheageofnineorten while watching matches on television with my
grandmother Since then, I have followed the sport passionately, attended matches locally and even travelled overseas to watch live cricket. I was therefore delightedtoseeGuyanahost the 2026 Global Super League. While I commend the opportunity to bring another tournament to our shores, my experiences as a spectatorhighlightedseveral issues that I believe deserve publicattention.
I wish to share these concerns in the hope that theycanbeaddressedbefore future tournaments. I also wish to make it clear that I am not a supporter of the Guyana Amazon Warriors, but I firmly believe every individual has the right to support whichever franchise theychoose.
My first concern relates totheschedulingofmatches throughouttheGlobalSuper League. Over the course of the10-daytournament,each
team was required to play fourmatches.
However, while the four visiting teams each had to play a combination of day and night fixtures, the Guyana Amazon Warriors played exclusively under lights. In my opinion, this gave the home team the advantage of competing in the same playing conditions throughout the tournament, while every other team had toadapttobothdaytimeand nighttime conditions
Although I understand the desire to maximise attendance and television viewership by scheduling Guyana's matchesatnight,I question whether this createdalevelplayingfield. The scheduling also affected supporters of the visitingteams.

Truetoform,oneoffendingvendormakesthispointas they park their wares 24/7 on the absolute corner of the northern side of America and Water Streets, a living, abhorrentandcompletenuisancedriversoflargevehicles andpedestriansalike,asthisvendoralongwiththemany others continue to thumb their noses at the law Any vehicle parked on any corner in the manner shown in the attached picture is liable for a $5,000 fine. How much moneydoesthisvendoroweinfines?Hasthisvendorpaid offthesefinesinbribestotheConstabulary?Theyseemto have made this spot their transported or titled property What is worse is that any driver jamming any of the encumbrances of the vendors is likely to get tied up in a showdown and liable for property damage which should nothavebeenthereinthefirstplace.
Could the relevant authorities kindly see about clearing the America and Water Streets corner permanentlyandalsoreigninvendorswhobullytheirway onto the roads making it more difficult and next to impossible for the free passage of vehicles and pedestrians,andformealsofortheremainingtwoweeks of my vacation. In addition to the damaged seating, I also noticedthatmanyseatsinthe RedStandwerebadlyfaded, giving the facility a neglected appearance. With the Caribbean Premier League approaching, including the consistently well-attended fixtures against the Trinbago Knight Riders, I believe spectators deserve a venue that is prop

Beyond the condition of the seating, I also noticed a decline in the overall spectator experience when compared with previous international tournaments hosted at Providence Having attended two ICC Men's T20 World Cup matches at the venue in 2024, I witnessed firsthand the high standard that Guyana is capable of achieving. While the Global Super League has successfully attracted teams from the United States, Australia, Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates, I believe several features that enhancedthefanexperience during the World Cup were noticeablyabsent.
During the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, the electronicadvertisingboards around the boundary were used not only for
commercial advertisements butalsotodisplaythenames and photographs of the incoming batsman and the bowler currently in operation.
This greatly enhanced the viewing experience, particularly for spectators who may not have been familiarwitheveryplayeron the field. Unfortunately, this featurewasabsentduringthe GlobalSuperLeague.
With teams representing the United States,Australia, PakistanandtheUnitedArab Emirates, many of the participating players were unfamiliar to sections of the local audience. As someone who follows cricket closely andenjoyswatchingleagues from around the world, I recognised most of the players.
However, I overheard spectators referring to Ashton Agar simply as "the bald-headed man" and another supporter asking when "the tall white fast bowler" would return to bowl, a comment I believe referred to Brody Couch. (I have quoted these remarks only to illustrate the difficulty some spectators experienced in identifying unfamiliar players.) Simple enhancements, such as displaying players' names and photographs on the electronic boundary boards, would make the matches

attending international cricket for the first time. In addition, the

Sourcescloselyconnectedto theGoGtoldthisnewspaperthat the administration quietly “invited” a Dutch firm, Koole Onshore and Koole Offshore (KMS), headquartered in the Netherlands to send a proposal to retrieve the sunken ferry KaieteurNewsunderstandsthat KMS established a base in Suriname where it can easily mobilise staff and resources to Guyana.
The proposal leaked to this publicationisclearlydated28th July, 2026, days before government publicly opened a competitive bidding process This raises questions as to whether the government has already selected a company to salvage the vessel and has merely launched a bidding processtosatisfythepublicand assure family members and victims of the dreaded incident ofa“transparentprocess”.

The GoG on 2nd August issued a Request For Proposals to salvage the MV Barima, abandoningitspreviousplansto establish a memorial site to
honour the lives of those who drowned when the ferry capsizedandsank.
The vessel is currently sitting in soft mud, in water depths of about 13-15 meters (42-49feet).
The RFP stated, “Visibility at the wreck site is poor and strongcurrentsandtidalstreams may be encountered at times, necessitating suitably robust procedures and equipment for saleoperations.”
TheMaritimeAdministration Department (MARAD) and the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation in its RFP stated that interested companies should submit the (1) corporate profile, including ownership, principal place of business and years of operation in marine salvage; (2) evidence of relevant experience overthelast5-10years,including a track record of successful salvage operations in the region with a brief description of location, depth, vessel type and size, method used, and client references;(3)descriptionofthe proposed technical approach for the MV Barima salvage with emphasis on the measures to protect and document forensic evidence for use by the Commission of Inquiry and identify measures for protection oftheenvironment Companiesarealsorequired to(4)outlinekeypersonneland equipment to be deployed; (5) estimatedtimelinetocommence and complete operations; (6) be abletostowthesalvagedvessel upright on a barge for several weeks; confirm capacity to operateunder“nocure,nopay” orothercommercialagreements and finally submit statements regarding insurance coverage, h e a l t h , s a f e t y a n d environmental management systems and compliance with G u y a n a ’s m a r i t i m e , procurement and occupational safetyregulations.

The opposition wants mass protests, but Guyana is not ready
The sinking of the M.V Barima has understandably produced anger, grief and frustration across Guyana, and in any functioning democracy a credible opposition would be expectedtoseizeuponsucha nationaltragedyanduseitto
hold the government accountable. That is what politics is about, after all: whenanopportunitypresents itself,youdonotpolitelyask ittocomebackanotherday.
So, nobody should be
surprised that the parliamentaryoppositionand other groups hostile to the PPP/C government have soughttoturnthetragedyinto a p o l i t i c a l i s s u e Governmentsareexpectedto answer difficult questions when tragedy strikes, and opposition parties are expected to ask those questions loudly, repeatedly and, if necessary, in parliament,onthestreetsand whereverelsepublicopinion isformed.
The problem for the oppositionisnotthatthereis no public anger, because there certainly is The problem is that public anger does not automatically translate into mass political action, and at present neither the objective nor the subjective conditions exist for the sort of sustained protest movement that could seriously shake the government.
The 2025 elections should have taught the opposition something about the political mood of the
country Guyana remains deeply divided along ethnic and political lines, and although the PPP/C experienced voter apathy within its own base, it nevertheless succeeded in holding that base together sufficientlytoretainpower
That is an important fact which cannot simply be wished away A government can be unpopular with many people and still remain politically secure if its opponents cannot transform that dissatisfaction into a broad movement capable of crossing traditional political boundaries.
There is another little problem confronting those hoping for a great uprising, and that is the Guyanese economy This is the season of economic hustling, with peopletryingtomakeadollar wherevertheycan,andmany are far more interested in securingtheirowneconomic future than in spending days marchingbehindpoliticians.
People know that the oil boom will not last forever, even if nobody knows preciselywhenthepartywill end. There is money to be made now, contracts to be secured, businesses to be built and opportunities to be grabbed, so telling people to abandonthehustleandspend their days protesting is not necessari
proposition.
Then there is the opposition itself, which is perhaps the biggest obstacle to the protest movement it
wantstocreate.Thepolitical forces that would have to mobilise a mass movement are themselves divided, suspiciousofoneanotherand competing for the same politicalspace.
APNU and WIN are hardlyoperatingasmembers ofonehappypoliticalfamily APNU is watching WIN carefully because WIN has made inroads into constituencies that APNU once regarded as its natural political territory, and nobody in politics likes discovering that the fellow standing beside him at the rally is actually measuring thesizeofhispoliticalshoes.
APNU also has a leadership problem, not necessarilybecauseithasno capable people, but because manyofitsnewerleadersare still finding their political feet. Leadership has to be earnedovertime,andpeople have to become sufficiently convinced in a leader's courage, judgment and ability before they are prepared to follow that personintothestreets.
The opposition therefore finds itself unable to rise above its own divisions Mass movements require organisation, leadership, trustandacommonpurpose, and none of these can be manufactured overnight becauseatragedyhascreated a convenient political opening.
Thereisalsothequestion of the demand that ministers responsible should resign The opposition has made
resignationacentralpolitical principle, but the inconvenient truth is that ministerial resignation following national tragedy has never been a settled tradition in Guyanese politics.
Indeed, the opposition's moral authority on this question is weakened by its own political history When t h e A P N U - A F C administration was in office and the Camp Street Prison uprising resulted in destruction and deaths, there was no comparable insistence that a responsible Minister must resign as a matterofprinciple.
That makes the present demand look less like an established constitutional convention and more like a political weapon being deployed against an opponent. If resignation is genuinely a principle, then it mustbeappliedconsistently, whether the government involved is the PPP/C, APNU-AFC or any other
politicaladministration.
None of this means that the government should be protected from criticism
Quite the opposite: the circumstances surrounding theBarimatragedydemanda thorough investigation, accountability where responsibility is established, and reforms to ensure that such a disaster does not happenagain.
But there is a difference between demanding accountabilityandimagining that the country is on the verge of mass political protests.
TheBarimatragedymay have triggered genuine public outrage, but outrage by itself is not a mass movement, and political opportunitybyitselfdoesnot p r o d u c e p o l i t i c a l momentum.
The opposition would therefore do well to understand the difference between the objective and subjective conditions. The objective conditions the
broader social and economic circumstances are not sufficiently favourable, while the subjective conditions leadership, organisation, unity and public confidence in those leadingtheprotest—areeven lessfavourable.
For now, Guyanese people appear more interested in mourning the dead, demanding answers andgettingonwiththeirlives than in becoming foot soldiers in somebody else's politicalandpersonalbattles. The Opposition may have foundanissue,butfindingan issue is one thing; finding a country ready to march behindyouissomethingelse entirely

Awoman was robbed on Saturday night shortly after leaving the national stadium at Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD), where she had attended the Global Super League (GSL) Final between the Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) and the San FranciscoUnicorns(SFU).

Preliminary investigations revealed that motorcar PJJ94,drivenby42-year-old CarltonPluckofNo.8Village, WestCoastBerbice,wastravellingeastalongthenorthern carriageway at fast rate. While negotiating a right bend, Pluck reportedly attempted to overtake a line of traffic and collided head-on with motorcar PAP 2877, which was travelling west along the southern carriageway
Motorcar PAP 2877 was being driven by 33-year-old Andre Stephen of Bermine Scheme, New Amsterdam. Also in the vehicle were 37-
year-old Sean Codagan of Glasgow Housing Scheme, New Amsterdam, and 33year-oldDelonCodagan,also ofNewAmsterdam.
The impact left both vehicles extensively damaged, and all four men sustained injuries.

T h e G u y a n a Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA) has mounted a strong challenge to government's decision to invest almost half a billion dollars in a state-owned water bottling plant, noting that the move could crush privateinvestmentandplace government in direct competition with local manufacturers that have spent years building the industry
In a statement released on Tuesday, GMSA which r e p r e s e n t s l o c a l manufacturers,calledonthe government to review the proposed water bottling facility, a venture that will fallunderthepurviewofthe GuyanaWaterInc.(GWI).

country's first state-owned water bottling plant, a move which furthers President IrfaanAli's push for 100 per centlocallyproducedbottled water
The money, allocated under Guyana Water Inc.'s coastal water supply services, will finance a facilityaimedatreducingthe country's reliance on importedbottledwater
In its statement, GMSA said together with local bottledwatermanufacturers, the association met with the Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar, andtheleadershipofGWIto discuss opportunities and challenges facing Guyana's bottledwaterindustry
It said during that engagement, the association welcomed the government's vision of achieving 100%
locally produced bottled w a t e r ( H S 2 2 0 1 ) , recognising it as a strategic opportunity to strengthen local manufacturing, create jobs, and enhance Guyana's economicresilience.

Demonstrating the Force's continued commitment to youth development and sports, Deputy CommissionerRavindradatBudhram, last Thursday, July 30, 2026, at the Police Sports Club Ground, recognized and rewarded several players for their outstanding commitmentandperformancesonthe cricket field throughout the tournament.
Among those recognized were Richard Ramdeholl, who claimed an impressive 19 wickets, and Mickel Sharma, who scored the most runs (219) for his team during the
