Karpowership, the
Tu r k i s h p o w e r company that was hired by Guyana to provide additionalelectricitytothenational grid, pending the startup of the delayed Gas-to-Energy (GTE) project,isdemandinganadditional $3.4M daily from the Government of Guyana (GoG) to continue its service.
The company’s contract with theGoGendedon21stMay,2026. Recognising the crisis they are in, the GoG desperately wrote to the company on May 22, begging for an additional 30-day extension to hashoutanewcontract.
The powership operators however flatly rejected the government’s plea, informing that itcouldnotfacilitatesuchalengthy extension, granting instead a limited one-week window which closedonMonday,1stJune,2026.
Former Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson who held responsibility for power generationbetween2015and2020, on Monday revealed that the company originally agreed to supplyGuyanawith36-megawatts (MW) of electricity at US$0.076 perKilowatt(KW).
It is now demanding US$0 095/KW- the same rate Guyana is currently paying for the secondpowership,stationedinthe Demerara River That vessel
provides 60-MW of electricity to thenationalgrid.
As such, Patterson told this newspaper, “This means that they are demanding a US$0.019/KW –inmoneytermstheywillbegetting an additional US$15,760 (G$3 4M) per day from this increasedrentalfees.”

The new yearly rental of US$28,760,832 at an average exchange rate of G$215 means Guyana will be losing a whopping G$6.2B due to incompetence, as pointed out by the former Member ofParliament.

Guyanesehavebeentoldthatthecountryisexperiencing unprecedentedgrowth.Theoiland gas sectorhas attracted billionsofdollarsininvestment.Newinfrastructureprojects areunderway Hotelsarerising.Roadsarebeingexpanded. Newindustriesarebeingpromoted.Thenarrativeisoneof prosperityandopportunity
Yet many local businesses continue to voice concerns abouttheirplaceinthisboom.
Across multiple sectors, foreign companies have emergedasdominantplayers.Theypossessgreateraccessto capital, larger workforces, more advanced technology and extensive international networks. These advantages often place local firms at a competitive disadvantage from the outset. The result is that many of the largest contracts and most lucrative opportunities frequently end up in foreign hands.
Thisrealityhasfuelledfrustrationwithinsectionsofthe local private sector Business owners have repeatedly complained about barriers to entry, difficulties accessing financing,procurementsystemsthatappeartofavourlarger external firms and competition that is anything but equal. Whethereverycomplaintisjustifiedisbesidethepoint.The persistenceoftheseconcernssuggeststhattheissuecannot simplybedismissed.
Government officials often point to local content policies as evidence of their commitment to Guyanese participation. Those measures have undoubtedly created opportunitiesforsomebusinessesandhavehelpedincrease local involvement in key sectors. But the question remains whethertheseinitiativesaresufficienttobuildabroadand resilient domestic business class capable of competing on equalterms.
Acountrycanexperiencetremendouseconomicgrowth whileitslocalbusinesscommunityremainslargelyconfined to the margins of that growth. Foreign investment is important. It brings capital, expertise and jobs. No serious observer would argue otherwise. But foreign investment shouldcomplementlocalenterprise,notovershadowit.
The concern is that Guyana may be drifting toward a modelwhereinternationalfirmsdominatethecommanding heights of the economy while local businesses are encouraged to settle for secondary roles. If that perception takeshold,callsforoverseasexpansionmayringhollow

Inoneofitslatestrulings,(May21, 2026)theICJreaffirmedthattherightto strike remains a fundamental right and must be respected not only by governmentsbutalsobyemployersand all stakeholders This position reinforces what trades unions around the world have argued for generations and what the International Labour Organisation(ILO)haslongrecognised as a cornerstone of industrial relations. Thesignificanceofthisrulingcannotbe overstated.
The ILO, established in 1919, remains the only international institution where governments, employers, and workers' organisations (trades union) come together as equal partners in determining labour standards and principles. It is the only body where decisions affecting the world of work are made with the full participation and support of governments, employers, and workers alike. The rights and standards that emerge from that process command
respect because they represent a consensus among all three social partners.

In April 2024, Justice Sandil Kissoon delivered a ruling that upheld the principles of collective bargaining andrecognisedtherightsofworkersand their union Nevertheless, the Government of Guyana-through Ministry of Education- which often describes itself as a workers' government,hascontinuedalongapath that denies teachers the automatic deduction of union dues and refuses to fully honour the principles underpinningcollectivebargaining.
This matter goes to the heart of whether workers' rights, collective agreements, judicial decisions, and established labour principles will be respected It raises a fundamental question:Canworkershaveconfidence
emerged because they achieved success in their domestic marketsandusedthatsuccessasaplatformforexpansion. WhyshouldGuyanabeanydifferent?
If government genuinely wants Guyanese businesses to becomeregionalchampions,thenitmustfirstensurethatthey haveafairopportunitytobecomenationalchampions.Itmust examine whether procurement practices adequately support local participation. It must address financing constraints. It must ensure that local content policies are not merely symbolicbuttransformative.
EncouragingbusinessestoexpandbeyondGuyanaisnota bad objective. In fact, it is a necessary one. The domestic market is small and long-term sustainability will require regional and international engagement. But such expansion should be the next step in a logical progression, not a

The Guyana Teachers Union now finds itself forced to operate under circumstances that should never have arisen.Rightsthathavebeenrecognised by law, affirmed through collective bargaining, and supported by international labour standards must not betreatedasoptional.
What is happening today should concerneveryGuyanesecitizen.
The parties who govern this nation were elected by the people. Their decisions ought therefore to reflect respectforthepeopleandrespectforthe rights they possess. However, there remains a troubling tendency in some quarters to undermine fundamental labourrightswhileexpectingworkersto quietlyaccepttheerosionofprotections that generations before them fought to secure.
Aroundtheworld,governmentsand employershavesoughttodenyworkers the right to strike while insisting that employers retain the right to lock out workers. Such an imbalance cannot be justified. Rights cannot be applied selectively Fairness cannot operate onlyinonedirection.
The right to strike remains a fundamental democratic safeguard. It givesworkersameaningfulvoicewhen all other avenues have been exhausted. Without it, collective bargaining (Continuedonpage6)
substituteforunresolveddomesticshortcomings.
The government cannot simultaneously celebrate the influxofforeigncompaniesandthentelllocalbusinessesthat their future lies elsewhere. That message risks being interpreted as an admission that the most attractive opportunitiesathomearealreadyspokenfor Guyaneseentrepreneursdonotlackambition.Theydonot lack vision. What many seek is a level playing field in the country whose growth they have helped sustain through difficultdecades.
Before urging them to conquer regional markets, government should ensure that they are not strangers to opportunityintheirownland.

Many men have learned that defending themselves carriesenormousrisks.They know that if they attempt to push away an attacker or
attempt to restrain someone who is attacking them, they may still end up being portrayed as the aggressor Consequently, some simply absorbthepunishment.They allow themselves to be slapped, shoved, scratched andhumiliatedbecausethey fearwhatwillhappenifthey respond.
No society should place itscitizensinsuchaposition. Calling for fairness does not diminish the seriousness of violence against women. Nor does it deny the reality that women remain disproportionately affected by domestic violence. Both thingscanbetrueatthesame time. Women can require protection,andmencanalso be victims deserving of protection.
The principle should be simple.Whatappliestomen shouldapplytowomen.
If a man must answer before the courts for assaulting a woman, then a woman who assaults a man should also answer before the courts. If police officers are expected to take complaints from women seriously, they should also take complaints from men seriously Equality before thelawcannotbeselective.

Yet,justwhenthenationwasbeginning tothinkthatthepolicetelephonesystemhad collapsedentirely,arecentvideoprovideda remarkable breakthrough. It turns out the policephonesdowork.
Not only do they work, but some membersofthepublicappeartopossessthe personal cellphone numbers of multiple ranks. Better still, they seem to know everybodybyname.
While ordinary citizens are engaged in anarchaeologicalexpeditiontryingtolocate a functioning police line, others apparently havethepoliceonspeeddial.
Imaginethecontrast.
One citizen spends forty-five minutes callingthestation. Ring. Ring. Ring. Noanswer Meanwhile, another individual casually
nine months' imprisonment after assaulting a 76-yearoldmanatStabroekMarket. According to court reports, she kicked and stomped the elderly victim after an altercation. The magistrate citedboththeseriousnessof the attack and the victim's age in imposing the sentence.
Beyond Guyana, courts in other countries have also convicted women for assaulting men. Such cases remindusthatviolenceisnot exclusively a male behaviour Women, too, can beperpetrators.
Perhaps one reason the issue remains underdiscussed is that many male victimsarereluctanttocome
embarrassment. Others fear they will not be believed. Still others worry that reporting an abusive female partner could somehow lead toaccusationsagainstthem.
That silence allows the problemtoremainhidden.
Amodernsocietyshould reject all forms of violence, regardless of who commits it.
We cannot condemn violencewhenitflowsinone directionandexcuseitwhen
foundationofjustice.

GPL said the incident occurred when heavy-duty equipment operated by Raju S i n g h o f Av i n a s h Contracting and Scrapmetal Inc. came into contact with the L4 transmission line, which interconnects the Golden Grove and Sophia substations.
The impact damaged critical infrastructure and disrupted electricity supply to customers in affected areas.
According to GPL, technical teams responded immediately to assess the damage and restore service as quickly and safely as possible.

She further disclosed that work is also advancing on a PreliminaryEconomicAssessment(PEA),whichisexpected withinsixtoeightweeks.ThePEAwillincorporateboththe Wenot and Gilt deposits into a new mine plan. Ellingham notedthattheApril2026,MineralResourceEstimate(MRE) willformthebasisfortheupcomingPEA.
InApril,thecompanyannouncedanupdatedMREforthe overallgoldprojectshowing400,000ouncesincreaseabove the August 2025, MRE – bringing the project’s indicated MREto2.5millionounces.

“The younger the age of initiation,thestrongertheaddiction. Protecting children and adolescents must remain at the core of tobacco control efforts,” added Anselm Hennis, Director of PAHO’s DepartmentofNoncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health.

adolescence can have lasting consequences. As the brain continues to develop into early adulthood, nicotine can impaircognitivedevelopment and increase the risk of lifelong dependence. Even low levelsofexposurecanleadto addiction, underscoring the importanceofprevention.All products, including cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, nicotine pouches, and heated tobacco products, carry risks and can lead to dependence.

PAHO is calling on governments, civil society, and communitiestoaccelerateactionbyimplementingcomprehensive,evidence-basedpolicies. These include banning
