Yet the public is expected to accept reassurances while basic questions remain unanswered: Who benefits? Andthisisnotanisolatedcase.Wehaveseenpatterns before, contracts awarded without transparency, state resourcestreatedasprivatespoilsandofficialsbehavingas thoughpublicofficeisalicensetoaccumulate.Thedetails maydiffer,buttheunderlyingscriptremainsthesame.The watchdogs bark, the evidence mounts, and yet the system lumberson,largelyunmoved.
But let us not pretend this is only about those in high office.Corruptionsurvivesbecauseitisfed—notjustfrom above,butfrombelow Thetrafficpolicemanstopsadriver and before a word is spoken, a folded bill appears. No receipt,norecord,noconsequence.Ashortcuttaken,alaw bypassed.Wegrumbleaboutthesystem,yetwegreaseits wheelseveryday
There is a convenient fiction that corruption is something done to us by “them”—the politicians, the officials, the faceless bureaucrats. But corruption is a transaction. It requires two willing participants: one to demand, another to comply The bribe offered is just as corrosive as the bribe accepted. In that sense, the moral erosioniscollective.
Thisisnottoequatethepettywiththegrand.Thereisa vast difference between slipping a note to avoid a traffic ticket and orchestrating multimillion-dollar schemes that drainthepublictreasury Butthepsychologyisconnected. Thetoolsforresistancearealreadyinourhands.Inan ageofubiquitoussmartphones,everycitizenisapotential whistleblower. Why are there not more recordings, more images, more exposures of everyday corruption? Why do social media platforms overflow with gossip and trivialities, yet fall strangely silent when it comes to documenting wrongdoing? Fear may play a role, but so doesapathyand,insomecases,self-interest.
There is also the question of consequences.Too often, allegations surface, headlines are made, and then… nothing. No resignations, no prosecutions, no meaningful reforms The message this sends is unmistakable: corruption pays, and accountability is optional. It is this perception, more than anything else that entrenches the problem.
Anoldepitaphtellsofamanwhospenthislifetryingto changetheworld,thenhiscountry,thenhisfamily,onlyto realiseattheendthatheshouldhavestartedwithhimself.It is a lesson we would do well to heed. National transformation does not begin in Parliament; it begins in personalconduct.

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha on Monday said he will engage rice millers again this week as concerns persist among farmers over the current paddy price, which remains at $2,700 per bag at the start of the harvestingseason.
The minister confirmed that harvesting for the first crop has commenced across major rice-producing regions and noted that he met with several farmers to hear their concerns firsthand. He acknowledged that complaints about low prices persist, particularly as input costs remain a major issue for producers, but maintained that discussionswithmillersareongoing.

Town Clerk of the GeorgetownMayorandCity Council, Candace Nelson has publicly disassociated herself from legal proceedings filed by the municipality against Attorney General Anil Nandlall, stating that she neitherauthorisednorsigned any documents connected to thecase.

Agriculture Minister ZulfikarMustaphayesterday announcedearlysuccessina pilot onion cultivation project in Region Nine (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo) as the governmentmovestoreduce long-standingrelianceonthe importation of onions and boostlocalproduction.
Mustapha spoke to reporters about the initiative atLot19SandyBabbStreet, Kitty – the residence of distributor Abdul Wahab –where he revealed that approximately2,000bagsof onions, each weighing 20 kilograms, were harvested from a four-acre pilot farm operated by Region Nine farmer Chris Moses with supportfromtheMinistryof Agriculture.
The minister said the project has already attracted widespread interest, with several regions expressing readiness to join the effort. He noted that Regions Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Five (Mahaica/Berbice) and Six (East Berbice/Corentyne) havesignalledtheirintention to begin onion cultivation, prompting directives for the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) to collaborate with interested farmers.
“Thisisapilotprojectof four acres. The next crop, I am hoping we can go into about 200 acres of onion cultivation,” Mustapha said, noting that such expansion could position Guyana to meet its domestic demand.
“If we can cultivate 200 acres, we can be selfsufficient in producing all our needs in Guyana,” he added, expressing optimism that production could eventually surpass that target. He shared that the initiative is in keeping with efforts to diversify agriculture and promote high-valuecrops,pointingto ongoing work in crops such as broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, lettuce, corn and soya, and noting that additional crops include beetsanddragonfruit.

The Guyana BoxingAssociation (GBA) is celebrating a significant milestone after rising talent Ken Harvey secured a bronze medal at the fourth edition of the South AmericanYouthGamesinPanamaCity
Harvey, who represents the Andrew Lewis Gym in Albouystown, delivered a string of impressive performances to earn Guyana’s first, and so far, only medal at the prestigiousregionalevent.
Infact,itisGuyana’sfirstmedalsincethe 2017GamesinChile,afterthecountryfailed to reach the podium at the 2022 edition in Argentina.
Competing in the highly competitive 60kg division, the young Caribbean champion announced his arrival on the continentalstagewithauthority
