The President of Guyana's decision to finally host a press conference yesterday was welcomed and long overdue. Since his accession to the highest office of the land, President Irfaan Ali has held only a handful of press conferences. As such, his decision to engage with the full media corps was greeted with anticipation and with optimism. It was hoped that yesterday's press conference would mark a departure from the hostility and agitation exhibited by the Vice President during his weekly interactions with reporters from this newspaper. Unfortunately, yesterday's event proved otherwise. When questioned by reporters of this newspaper, President Ali mirrored the Vice President's antagonistic approach to Kaieteur News. In a particularly disheartening exchange, he responded to a question from one of our young reporters with undue hostility, going as far as to insult the reporter's personal decision concerning home ownership. He also gave a dismissive answer to another reporter who asked about perceptions about the management of the oil and gas sector. This newspaper expresses its profound disappointment, though not surprise, at the President's histrionics. Such conduct reflects poorly on his office and aligns him perfectly with his Vice President's combative stance towards the press.
