Letter from the President

As I reflect on the past academic year, I am filled with pride and gratitude for a community that fosters confident, compassionate leaders. At Gwynedd Mercy, our mission—to educate, inspire, and empower young women—extends far beyond graduation. Each year, our alumnae demonstrate the lasting impact of a Mercy education, advancing communities and professions worldwide while giving back to the school that shaped them.

This year, we celebrate alumnae who are truly making their mark. From seasoned professionals leading in their fields to recent graduates stepping confidently into significant roles early in their careers, our graduates embody the courage, service, and leadership that define a Gwynedd Mercy woman. Many return to campus to share their expertise through panels, volunteer work, and mentoring, creating a powerful cycle of inspiration that strengthens our entire community and advances our strategic vision, She is the Future

Today, our 471 Monarchs, the largest student body in our history, are thriving. Their success is fueled by opportunities made possible through the Mercy Fund, financial aid supported by the EITC Program, our new Monarch Wing, and the strategic direction of our academic plan, The Flight Plan. Together, these initiatives elevate classroom excellence, nurture each student’s whole-person development, and open specialized learning pathways led by our exceptional faculty.

THE CLASS OF 2025 Honoring at Commencement

On June 7, the 96 women of the Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School Class of 2025 processed in white into the School’s Performing Arts Center carrying bouquets of red roses to celebrate the School’s 164th Commencement.

During her invocation, Camille Campbell gave thanks for the gift of a Gwynedd education rooted in mercy and sisterhood. She prayed that the Class of 2025 would carry the spirit of compassion, courage, and service into the world, continuing the legacy of Mercy Girls past and present.

Salutatorian Sarah Giordano explored the idea of “inscape”—the unique, felt essence of a place—and how it captures the spirit of Gwynedd. Through personal reflection, she described how Gwynedd became more than just a school; it became a home filled with steady care, lasting connections, and the presence of God and mercy. Each member of the class was then presented to President Denise Corkery Marbach ’72 and Board of Trustees Chair Melva Exner ’77 to receive her graduation medal and diploma. Additional medals were awarded to graduates in recognition of outstanding school spirit, honor, service, leadership, and academic performance.

President Marbach introduced the 2025 Commencement Speaker, Kathleen Kirk Bellwoar ’81, Immediate Past Chair of the Academy’s Board of Trustees. A Partner and Head of the Philadelphia Office at Sia Partners, a global management consulting firm, she also leads the firm’s CIO Advisory Team.

In her address, Kathy offered heartfelt advice rooted in resilience, failure, and the power of persistence. Drawing from her own life and career, she shared personal stories and four key lessons: believe in yourself, embrace challenges, never give up on those you love, and make time for service.

She reminded the Class of 2025 that the world needs their voices, their brilliance, and their Mercy spirit, urging them to lead with compassion and courage. Her final message: “You are ready. You are not alone. You are part of something bigger now—a legacy of strong, smart, purposeful women who lift others as they lead. And when life knocks you down—get back up. And begin again.”

President Marbach then celebrated National Merit Scholarship Winner Lauren Ryan, along with Commended Students Calliope Beatty and Sarah Giordano, for their exemplary academic achievements.

In her closing remarks, Valedictorian Calliope Beatty reflected on how the Class of 2025 transformed from strangers into sisters through the shared experiences of their Gwynedd Mercy journey. Using the metaphor of transubstantiation, she illustrated how their bonds, though not always visible, are deeply real and lasting.

Finally, the graduates, alumnae, faculty, and staff sang the Alma Mater, just before the Class of 2025 processed to the Chapel for the crowning of the Blessed Mother by Calliope Beatty with her mother Maria by her side.

ELEVATING BUSINESS AS A MERCY-FULL LEADER

With leadership, courage, and compassion as her guiding principles, Kathleen Kirk Bellwoar ’81—the Commencement Speaker and recipient of the 2024–25 Margaret Beirn Barger ’35 Distinguished Alumnae Award—truly embodies Mercy in action.

A former student body president, Kathy went on to earn a business degree from Villanova University and a master’s in organizational dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania. She launched her career at Arthur Andersen before founding PPT Consulting in 2003—a management and IT consulting firm focused on People, Process, and Technology.

With Kathy’s leadership as founder and president, PPT grew into a nationally recognized firm, repeatedly named among the fastestgrowing businesses by INC5000, Philly100, and Soaring 76. It was also honored as a top WomanOwned Business by DiversityBusiness.com. In 2021, PPT was acquired by global consultancy Sia Partners, where Kathy now leads the Philadelphia office and the firm’s global CIO Advisory Team.

Kathy has earned numerous accolades, including Consulting Magazine’s Women Leaders in Technology (2020), Philly Biz’s Women to Watch (2017), and awards recognizing her leadership and entrepreneurial success. Recently, she devoted nine years to the Academy’s Board of Trustees, serving seven as Chair, where she helped guide the school through transformative efforts such as the She is the Future strategic plan and the A Place to Soar capital campaign, which funded a new wing designed for community, counseling, and learning spaces.

Kathy’s leadership is inspired by a rich Gwynedd Mercy family tradition and her role as a wife and mother of three. These personal ties fuel her passion for nurturing communities and fostering growth—both in her professional career and within the school she proudly serves.

Kathleen Roeder, MD ’60, a retired emergency physician, completed her third term on the Academy’s Board of Trustees in June and is the first Trustee Emerita of the Alumnae Association Board. Her daughter, Amy Roeder Wolfe ’92, is an entrepreneur who supports Gwynedd events with her staffing company. And her granddaughter, Charlotte Wolfe ’25, just started her first year as a student at Princeton University where she plays on the women’s rugby team.

At press time, our dedicated friend, Melva Exner, entered eternal rest with our Lord. We share this tribute with loving hearts and deep gratitude for her devotion and leadership.

GWYNEDD GIRL A Lifelong

Melva Exner, Esq. ’77, P’11 became a Mercy Girl and entered Gwynedd Mercy Academy in first grade, when the school was still an elementary school and high school combined. Now, after a successful career as an attorney, she leads the Academy as the Chair of the Board of Trustees, ensuring its legacy for many years to come.

create a class and taught the pair during their lunch period. “There was a focus on education and widening our view of the world,” she says.

Melva’s classmates chose a few key words to sum up their friend in her senior yearbook caption. First on their list: “leader.” This word encompasses the roles Melva has taken on throughout her life as a lawyer, a mother, and an alumna of Gwynedd Mercy—from her current position as the Board of Trustees Chair, to her years as part of the Alumnae Association Board, acting as President, Vice President, and Committee Chair. Melva always answers the call and lends her talent, expertise, and feedback when she’s needed. She has worked tirelessly to ensure the legacy and longevity of Gwynedd Mercy, as a parent, a volunteer, and an advocate.

As a student and member of Student Council, Melva was encouraged to help shape the school she wanted to see. "There was an open-mindedness here,” she shares. “If you wanted to change something, then you were encouraged to go do it." And the school provided the resources—like when Melva and her friend Mary Higgins Fletcher ’77 were interested in learning about Middle Eastern affairs. They discussed this with the principal, Margaret Donohue, R.S.M. ’56, who went on to

After her time in the red and gold corridors, Melva went on to Saint Joesph’s University to earn her undergraduate degree, then Temple University’s Beasley School of Law. She worked as a lawyer for an Italian aircraft manufacturer and often found herself as the only woman in many of the rooms she worked in. Eventually, she started her own law firm, which she ran until 2024.

Today, Melva leads the governing body of Gwynedd Mercy and has seen it grow physically with the addition of the new Monarch Wing and the enrollment of the school’s largest student body. She has also seen the school evolve academically and programmatically, continuously innovating to prepare students for life outside the red and gold corridors. “I’m blown away by educators. They never say ‘that’s it’—they are always coming up with something new to give the girls better opportunities,” she says. “I often leave my meetings feeling so impressed.”

ELIZABETH ARNOLD ’77

University of Alaska Professor and former NPR Correspondent

Elizabeth is a journalism professor and producer. For twenty years, she was a familiar voice on NPR’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered and PBS Washington Week, covering Congress, the White House, and the American West.

Elizabeth has received a duPont Columbia Silver Baton and the Dirksen Award for Distinguished Reporting of Congress. She has reported on the ecological and human impacts of global warming from the Arctic and authored the paper “Gloom and Doom: The Role of the Media in the Public’s Disengagement on Climate Change.” She has twice trekked to the North Pole to cover stories of the people who live and work in the Arctic. Now, Elizabeth teaches and continues to tell stories through Arctic Profiles, a series of intimate multimedia portraits aimed at putting a face on the Arctic as extraordinary change unfolds.

Karen is a dynamic media leader whose three-decade rise from MTV media planner to a top strategist at Paramount places her at the center of one of the industry’s most powerful advertising organizations, driving billions across a portfolio spanning CBS and Paramount+ originals to sports and live events. Known for people-first leadership, she champions women, mentors emerging talent, and is widely recognized for her impact.

Feature Producer, ESPN

After working with the NFL, Eagles, Phillies, 76ers, and Sports Illustrated, Alex now produces features for ESPN, where she tells inspiring stories and mentors women in sports TV. Her work has earned her six Emmys, a Clio, and a Gracie Grand Award. Notably, Alex directed a documentary feature about a coach battling ALS—this was especially meaningful as her mother passed from the disease. Alex credits GMA TV with sparking her passion for storytelling through video.

THERESA REGLI ’92

Director & Chief Strategist at Vox Veritas Digital

Theresa is a global expert in Digital Media Management and has more than 30 years of experience in digital technology. Originally a journalist, she profiled new technologies and Internet startups, then wrote code that would become one of the world’s first newspaper websites.

Theresa eventually worked with many early-stage internet companies in Boston and Silicon Valley before becoming a partner in a technology analysis and consulting firm. In 2016, she started her own business and opened a UK subsidiary in 2017.

Today, she and her team advise executives and investors for many organizations around the world, focusing on digital sustainability and artificial intelligence. Theresa is the author of the definitive book on managing digital media and marketing assets, Digital & Marketing Asset Management, and has presented keynotes at conferences in 18 countries over the last decade.

Avalon Kohler’s Bakery Owner

Christina spent her summers at the shore and felt honored to help purchase Avalon’s beloved Kohler’s Bakery, where she now delights loyal customers with their famous cream donuts. She also serves as Executive Director of Shady Grove Fertility, overseeing strategic operations for its U.S. division. Christina credits Gwynedd with building her confidence, drive, and teamwork mindset. “The environment, religion, and teachers helped shape who I am,” she says.

CORINNE PERSICHETTI ’15

While studying at Fairfield University, Corinne turned her passion for nutrition into a business— opening Goodness Bowls in Avalon just days after graduation with support from her mom, Sue Persichetti P’15. The health-focused café has grown to multiple locations, including Spring House, owned and run by fellow Gwynedd alum Jenna Pasceri Godburn ’02 and her family. “I always wanted healthy options as an athlete,” Corinne says, “so I created them myself.”

Humanitarian Specialist and Technical Advisor

Julie works in global health and humanitarian affairs, leading projects that center dignity and inclusion for refugees and migrants. She currently advises the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration and has published 30+ reports on displacement and disability inclusion. “Gwynedd instilled in me a deep commitment to justice and service,” the 2017 Trocaire Awardee says. “Those values still guide my work—especially my belief in health as a human right.”

the first female public defender and Superior Court judge in St. Joseph County, MI

Jeanne’s legal career included many “first woman” steps: starting an allwomen firm in South Bend, IN, serving as a public defender, deputy prosecutor, judge in Saint Joseph County, IN, and being the first “shortlisted” woman for the Indiana Supreme Court.

She started This is My Neighborhood, a program for K-12 students designed to teach peaceful resolutions as a reponse to gun violence. Jeanne also served on the judicial committee that established Indiana’s rules for parental support of children of divorced parents.

Jeanne taught trial skills at Notre Dame Law School, teaches for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, and has been honored by the Indiana Judicial Center for her contributions to judicial education and for her pro bono efforts on behalf of people with developmental disabilities.

Since retiring, Jeanne moved to Cassopolis, MI and founded St. Francis Outreach in Cass County, she served on the local community mental health board, and is currently on the Cass Family Clinic Network Board.

LT. COL. DIANNA DITORO, D.P.T., U.S.M.C.R. ’97 Reserve Policy Board Member for the United States Marine Corps

A decorated officer with 20+ years of service, Dianna made history as the first woman to lead a U.S. Africa Command space integration team. Her work with the Marines and U.S. Space Command earned her the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. “At Gwynedd, I saw women excel in academics, athletics, and service,” she says. “That environment shaped my values and gave me the drive to lead—even as a department of one.” Dianna was awarded a Trocaire Award in 2022 for her work.

TRACEY DANELLA SPAUSE ’02 CVI Advocate and Founder of Seeing Sadie and CVI

Tracey founded the website “Seeing Sadie and CVI” with the goal to support families who have children diagnosed with Cortical/Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI), a complex and largely unknown condition. Inspired by her daughter, Sadie Jo, who was born with a brain injury resulting in CVI, Tracey wanted to provide families and educators with much-needed resources.

What began as a personal journey has evolved into a global resource, with Tracey’s work recognized internationally. She continues to provide ongoing resources to parents, teachers, and doctors throughout the world by attending conferences and offering support.

Tracey is proud of the growing awareness of CVI in medical and educational communities. Thanks to partnerships with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and continued advancements in learning adaptations, more families are receiving the support they need. Tracey has developed a comprehensive toolbox of adaptive strategies to assist families and educators in addressing diverse needs.

Corinne leads with a bold vision: housing justice for all. A 2019 “Most Admired CEO” and 2017 Valentine Leadership Fund awardee, she was appointed to Mayor Parker’s 2024 Transition Team with the goal to make Philly safer, greener, and more equitable. In 2012, she received a Trocaire Award for her philanthropic work. “Possibility is in the air at Gwynedd,” Corinne shared during her 2021 GMAHS Commencement Address. “It’s been harnessed by faculty who challenge you… and sparked by coaches and advisors who empower you to believe in your own possibility.”

KATE DANIELS IMBESI, ESQ. ’92 President and Volunteer Attorney Advocate, The Montgomery Child Advocacy Project (MCAP)

Kate, who was honored with a Trocaire Award in 2021, advocates for Montgomery County’s most vulnerable youth, providing free legal services to abused, neglected, and trafficked children. A former Assistant District Attorney, she has helped MCAP serve nearly 8,000 children since its founding.

“Gwynedd instilled in me compassion and service,” she says. “It’s where I found my passion for family and advocacy.” Kate brings that spirit to every child she represents—ensuring they are heard, protected, and given a path to healing.

JENNIFER PATTERSON, PH.D. ’94

Head of the Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine Research Group at Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies Materials Institute

Jennifer has over 25 years of experience in biomaterials and tissue engineering. In addition to developing innovative hydrogelbased systems for tissue regeneration, her independent research has led to advances in the development of bioinks for 3D printing and the use of micro- and nanoparticles as controlled delivery systems. She contributed to the Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Medicine special issue on “Emerging Group Leaders: Research and Reflections on Career Goals.”

Jennifer has acted as principal investigator and co-investigator on funded grants totaling over €13 million from international and national sources. Jennifer aims to train and inspire the next generation of researchers. In the last 13 years, she has supervised postdoctoral fellows, Ph.D. students, predoctoral students/research assistants, master students, and bachelor students. She is also an active member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society; the Society of Women Engineers; and the Society for Biomaterials.

Margaret Beirn Barger ’35 Distinguished Alumna Award: Service to the School

A passionate Sister of Mercy who has spent her life educating and inspiring young people and always steps up to support her beloved alma mater.

Sheila played a critical role during the COVID-19 pandemic—caring for patients and developing safety guidelines for providers, families, and children while overseeing infection control at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and more than 60 outpatient practice locations. She also helped lead a multi-specialty team to identify and treat children with multisystem inflammatory syndrome. In 2021, Sheila was named a Healthcare Hero by Westchester County and a Trocaaire Awardee. Sheila says, “At Gwynedd, we were taught to strive for excellence with compassion—lessons I carry into every patient interaction.”

Every October, alumnae gather to celebrate at the annual Reunion, reminiscing about memories from their days as students, touring the school, and catching up.

Gwynedd’s Flag Football Team made history, WINNING THE PA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP and receiving the trophy from Eagles quarterback, Jalen Hurts.

Natalie Pisch ’14 received the 2024 ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME AWARD for her success in volleyball. As a student, Natalie accumulated over 1,000 kills, was recognized at the ACAA, District 1, and State levels, and was a two-time captain for the team. She also received the 2014 Scholar Athlete Award. Now, Natalie works for Disney Vacation Club as a Marketing & Sales Strategy Manager.

To celebrate NATIONAL GIRLS & WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY during a schoolwide assembly, President Denise Marbach ’72 made a surprise appearance, proudly wearing one of her own Gwynedd athletics uniforms from her days as a studentathlete.

Our students are already earning college credits through the ENTREX LAB COURSE, an innovative academic offering with optional dual enrollment through the University of Delaware’s Horn Entrepreneurship program.

The Class of 1974 marked its 50-Year Reunion with a morning tea served on china from the Academy’s Broad Street and Columbia campus, a warm ovation from students, faculty, and staff as the graduates proudly walked the red and gold corridors, and the Circle of Mercy Luncheon at the William Penn Inn. They capped the weekend off with Saturday evening festivities at GMAHS.

ENDOWED & INVESTED FUNDS

The Office of Advancement is proud to oversee endowed and invested funds established by individuals or organizations in support of Gwynedd Mercy and our students. Each fund below is invested as part of Gwynedd’s quasi-endowment, and a percentage of the investment income is used each year to support the fund’s scholarship or program initiative. The Joan McDermott Bellwoar ’51 Scholarship Fund, established in 2020 through a generous gift from the Estates of Joan ’51 and Harry Bellwoar III, provides a partial tuition scholarship every four years to an incoming student with demonstrated financial need.

The Drs. William and Yvonne Brendley Alchemists Scholarship Fund, established in 2006 by Drs. William and Yvonne Brendley, a retired member of the Gwynedd Faculty, recognizes a rising senior who has achieved the highest general average in the highest level of junior science courses offered, is enrolled in the highest level of senior science courses offered, and demonstrates the charism of Mercy.

The Dr. Audrey D. Castellano ’77 Memorial Scholarship Fund, established in 2013 in memory of Dr. Audrey D. Castellano ’77 by her parents, Dr. Patrick Castellano and Mrs. Marlene Castellano, provides tuition assistance for one-year to a rising sophomore with financial need who has demonstrated a commitment to biology, chemistry, or math.

The Carol A. Chiodo ’75 Paduan Scholarship Fund, established in 1999 by Carol A. Chiodo ’75, provides four years of tuition assistance to an incoming freshman from Our Lady of Mercy Regional Catholic School, with priority given to parishioners from St. Anthony of Padua Parish of Ambler.

The Sr. Maureen Christi, R.S.M. Scholarship Fund, established in honor of Sister Maureen Christi, R.S.M. upon her retirement from teaching by her nieces and nephews, honors a rising senior who has exemplified a passion for excellence in English and an authentic commitment to community service and Mercy values throughout her threeyear journey at Gwynedd Mercy.

The Sr. Gail deMacedo, R.S.M. ’55 Scholarship Fund, established in memory of Sr. Gail deMacedo, R.S.M. ’55 who served as Vice Principal at Gwynedd Mercy, provides tuition assistance to students who demonstrate financial need, work to the best of their ability, participate in activities, and exhibit a desire for learning and all around goodness.

The Mary Ann Harron Haley ’50 Music Scholarship Fund, established in 2014 in memory of Mary Ann Harron Haley ’50 by her family, provides tuition assistance for oneyear to a prospective sophomore, junior or senior who demonstrates financial need and exhibits interest and commitment to music, with a particular emphasis on vocal music. These characteristics reflect Mary Ann’s life-long joy, passion, and gift to her family and community.

The Iorio Family Scholarship Award for Engineering, established in 2025 by faculty member Kimberly Hrnciar Naucodie in honor of her mother’s family, recognizes a rising sophomore, junior, or senior engineering student who exemplifies integrity, a strong work ethic, and determination.

The Carolyn Keen ’10 Memorial Scholarship Fund, established in 2011 in memory of Carolyn Keen ’10 by the Keen Family and funded through individual donations and the annual Carolyn Keen ’10 Memorial 5K/1M Walk (CK5K), provides tuition assistance for two-years to a rising junior who demonstrates a commitment to service and Mercy Spirit, provides leadership, exhibits good character, and is academically motivated.

The Legacy Scholarship Fund, established in 1997 by the Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School Alumnae Association and funded through individual donations and some Alumnae Association event proceeds, provides a four-year tuition assistance scholarship to an incoming student with financial need who has a familial relationship to one or more graduates or current students of Gwynedd.

The Margaret Cunningham Murray ’45 Scholarship Fund, established in 1995 in memory of Margaret Cunningham Murray ’45 by her husband Kevin N. Murray, Sr. and family, provides tuition assistance to an incoming or current student with financial need.

The Rose J. Romano P’69 Scholarship Fund, established in 1991 in memory of Rose J. Romano P’69 by her brother Joseph C. Romano, provides tuition assistance over a fouryear period to a student matriculating to Gwynedd from Our Lady of Mercy Regional Catholic School.

The Sisters of Mercy Scholarship Fund, established in 2005 by the Sisters of Mercy Regional Community of Merion, provides tuition assistance for students enrolled in Gwynedd, with special attention given to enhance the racial, cultural, and economic diversity of the student body.

The Eileen Ferrick Whiteside ’45 Award Fund, established in 2008 by Mr. Robert McNeil in honor of Eileen Ferrick Whiteside ’45, recognizes the best all-around senior, selected by the Principal.
