The YOUNG FARMERS’ PERPETUAL CHALLENGE SHIELD presented by the Burwarton Show Young Farmers’ Club will be awarded to THE MEMBER OF THE SOCIETY gaining the highest number of points in Classes 8-226, (Cattle & Sheep).
GRAND PARADE
All Champion, Reserve Champion, first, second and third placed cattle and sheep are expected to join the Grand Parade at an appointed time (approx. 3.40pm). Any exhibitor refusing to comply with this rule, or with the instructions of the Stewards, may forfeit their prize money.

Cattle exhibitors have the opportunity to collect points at three Midlands agricultural shows. The exhibitor accumulating the greatest number of points will win the THREE SHIRES CATTLE TROPHY and £1,000, with 2nd and 3rd receiving £350 and £150 respectively. The Dairy exhibitor with the highest number of points will be awarded

Cows or heifers calving at the Show before the time of judging WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO COMPETE. Cows or heifers which appear about to calve will be placed in isolation and after calving returned home as soon as possible. Cows or heifers showing any abnormal discharge or which appear to be about to abort or which do abort WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO COMPETE and will be placed in isolation at once. As soon as samples have been taken the animals together with all other Show animals from the same registered premises MUST be returned home and will not be allowed to compete.

Owners of the cattle must ensure that the young handler is capable of controlling the animal being shown. The animal must be used to being handled and an experienced adult must be present ringside during judging. The judge has the authority to ask any exhibitor not having sufficient control of their animal to leave the ring.

All valid MV/CAE certificates and completed Movement Licences must be produced at entrance to the Livestock area. Anyone not in possession of valid documentation will be asked to leave the Showground immediately.
Exhibitors of sheep must be either Fully Accredited Members of The Maedi Visna Accredited Flock Scheme or Non-Members of the Scheme. This MUST be indicated on your entry form.
Accredited breeds at Burwarton Show include: Texel, Beltex, Suffolk, British Charollais, Lleyn, British Berrichon, Shropshire, Blue Texel, Zwartbles and Dutch Spotted.
NOTE:
A. Accredited sheep must be transported separately to and from the Show.
B. Separate unloading areas will be allocated and must be used, as directed by the Stewards.
C. Accredited sheep will be penned in a separate area which is separated by two metres from non-accredited sheep.
D. Please bring a valid accreditation certificate of status.
E. All sheep classes, Accredited and Non-Accredited, may be shown in the same ring. Two metres separation MUST be kept between sheep of the two categories.

CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIERS
Oxford Sandy & Black - Burwarton is a qualifier for the Oxford Sandy & Black Pig Society Champion of Champions competition, the final of which is to be held at Moreton Show on Saturday 5 September 2026.The OSBPS will provide a rosette for the highest placed OSB pig and a Champion of Champions qualifying rosette for the best pig to put forward at the final. If the Best of Breed has already qualified at another show then the second placed pig may be awarded the rosette to qualify. This competition is for Society members only.
Tamworth - The Champion Tamworth pig will be eligible for entry into the Tamworth Champion of Champions competition to be held at the Dorset County Show on 5 & 6 September 2026. The owner must be a member of the Tamworth Breeders’ Club.
Saddleback - The highest placed Saddleback born in 2026 of either sex will be eligible for the final of the Junior Saddleback Championship at Malvern Autumn Show on 26 & 27 September 2026. The Champion Saddleback at the show will be eligible for the Champion of Champions competition also held at the Malvern Autumn Show. Qualification is open to BSBC members only.
Middle White – The Champion Middle White pig will qualify for the MWPBC Champion of Champions competition to be held at the The Middle White Pig Breeders Club will be holding the Champion of Champions compeition at the Dorset County Show on 5 & 6 September 2026. A MWPBC rosette is presented to the Champion Middle White. Berkshire – Burwarton is a qualifier for the Berkshire Pig Breeders Club Champion of Champions competition to be held at Newbury Show on Sunday 20 September 2026. If the winner has already qualified, the reserve may go forward.
Kunekune - The Champion Kunekune pig will be eligible for entry into the Kunekune Champion of Champions competition to be held at the Edenbridge & Oxted Show on 30 & 31 August 2026.
Welsh - The Pedigree Welsh Pig Society will offer a rosette to the highest placed pedigree Welsh pig. The winner will be eligible for the Welsh Champion of Champions competition to be held at Newbury Show on Sunday 20 September 2026. If the winner has already qualified, the reserve may go forward.
Modern and Traditional Breeds
It is important that exhibitors of female pigs (all breeds) born before 1 January 2025 shall be eligible to compete only if, in the six calendar months prior to the Show they have farrowed, suckled and reared to four weeks of age, a birth notified litter of pigs. Female pigs born on or after 1 January and before 1 July in the year before the Show must within 18 months of their date of birth have farrowed, suckled and reared to four weeks of age, a birth notified litter of pigs.
BRITISH PIG ASSOCIATION
YOUNG PIG OF THE YEAR COMPETITION 2026
The BPA Young Pig of the Year competition aims to select the best young pig born in the year of the show. The final will be held at the Malvern Autumn Show 26 & 27 September 2026. The rules of the competition are similar to that of the existing Pig of the Year competition, except that there is no division between Modern and Traditional. At the heats, all the eligible male pigs will parade in the ring to be judged and then all female pigs will parade for judging. The Best Young Male and Best Young Female from each qualifying show will go forward to the Final. The winners of each qualifying round will receive a rosette.
1. Burwarton Show is hosting a qualifying round, leading to the Final at The Malvern Autumn Show.
2. At each qualifying round the judge will select the Best Young Male and Best Young Female.
3. The Best Young Male and Best Young Female from each of the qualifying rounds will enter the Final. Prizes for preliminary rounds will be a glass trophy for the best young pig of each sex. Note: Rosettes only will be presented at each preliminary round. Glass trophies for preliminary rounds will be presented at the Final.
4. The Final will be to judge the Best Modern Male and Female with Reserves and the Best Traditional Male and Female with Reserves; the Best Pig (i.e. Young Pig of the Year) and Reserve.
5. In the Final at The Malvern Autumn Show, the Modern and Traditional Male and Female Champions will each receive £60, Reserve Champions £30. Overall Champion £200 and The Jack Howlett Memorial Trophy, and Reserve £150.
6. A condition of entering the competition is that prize winners at preliminary rounds MUST intend to exhibit at the Final. Any pig not forward will need to be reviewed by a panel of three individuals, and monetary fine may be applied should the panel not feel the reason justified. £25 first offence, increased for repeat offences or withdrawals. This could also lead to a ban from this competition
7. The award is open to all breeds of Pedigree pigs entered at Burwarton Show. The object is to determine the best young pig born in the year of the show as an example of their respective breeds.
8. All animals entered in this Competition must be the property of a member of the British Pig Association and must be registered in BPA’s herd books or the herd book of the British Lop Society.
9. Judges must be chosen from the BPA “Interbreeds” Judges List. They may only act for one qualifying round. The judge of the Final will not have acted for a qualifying round.
10. Classes from which pigs are chosen, and therefore eligible for qualifying rounds, must be judged by a BPA approved judge.
11. To be eligible for a qualifying round, a pig (male or female) must be born on or after 1st January of the year of the Show (see 9 below).
12. A pig judged Best Young Male or Best Young Female in a qualifying round cannot compete in any subsequent round. If a pig having qualified at an earlier show again qualifies at a later show the judge for that breed shall select an alternative pig of the same breed and sex from any class covering the required age group.
13. Where a single breed has more than one class covering the required age group for either sex, so permitting more than one 1st prize animal, the judge must nominate one of these for the qualifying round.
14. Where there are multi-breed classes, i.e. any other modern/any other traditional breed or a similar classification, the judge must nominate the best male and best female of the qualifying age of each breed represented (regardless of class prizes). These pigs will compete in the qualifying round with eligible entries from individual breed classes.

The Burwarton and District Agricultural Society Limited has limited funds available to make grants to assist in the furtherance of any of the following objects of the Society:—
1. The improvement of livestock, the advancement of breeding and the prevention and eradication of animal diseases.
2. The advancement of science and research in connection with agriculture and rural industries.
3. The development and improvement of crops and prevention and eradication of plant diseases and pests.
4. The development and improvement of agricultural machinery and equipment.
5. The holding of demonstrations and lectures on modern agricultural methods and processes.
6. The promotion of agricultural education and training.
7. The encouragement of Young Farmers Clubs and of activities related to agriculture by other youth organisations.
8. The encouragement of rural crafts and industries of interest to the farming community.
9. The promotion of co-operation between farmers and other land users with special reference to conservation.
10. The promotion of co-operation between rural and urban communities.

LIVESTOCK
DOGS
ALL dogs are strictly prohibited from the Livestock Field, the Member’s Pavilion and the WI Marquee. Under any circumstances, DO NOT leave your dog in your vehicle. If you do bring your dog, it must be kept on a lead at all times. In the interests of Health and Safety this rule will be strictly enforced on Show Day.
• It is the responsibility of all Exhibitors to ensure that all their staff are fully briefed on safety standards.
• Exhibitor’s attention is drawn to the following points:
- Exhibitors must ensure that leaders are sufficiently experienced and that animals wear suitable restraining harness.
- All exhibitors must use the official walkways for movement of livestock to and from their judging rings.
- All exhibitors must follow designated traffic routes.
- Animals must not be left unattended whilst the Show is open to the public.
- No animal may enter the Showground if its place of origin is under health restriction.
- Animal Health legislation will be enforced by the Shropshire Council, and all exhibitors will be expected to comply with this legislation.
- Junior Handlers: All young handlers must be capable of controlling the animal being shown. The animals must be used to being handled and an experienced adult must be present ringside during judging in case of an emergency. Animals must be suitable for the age and ability of the handler. The judge has the authority to ask any exhibitor not having sufficient control of their animal to leave the ring.
Specific Guidance Notes:
Cattle:
• There MUST be two experienced handlers with each BULL exhibit.
• As milking practices fall under the dairy hygiene regulations there must be no machine milking in the lines.
Sheep:
• Maedi Visna Accredited Flock Scheme exhibitors should ensure that if their sheep are in the scheme, they do not come into contact with non-scheme sheep.
Fire:
• In the event of a fire occurring, the following action must be taken: Immediately notify the Show Manager, giving exact details of the location. Follow Steward’s instructions. In the absence of a Steward ensure that everyone retreats to a safe area away from the fire and clear the approach roads. If it is safe to do so, tackle the fire with extinguishers until the Fire Service arrives. Any directive given by the Fire Service or Police must be followed.
Veterinary presence:
• The on-site duty vet can be contacted via the Livestock commentators, Chief Stewards or Stewards. Evacuation of Livestock:
• Should it be necessary to evacuate livestock, exhibitors must comply with Steward’s instructions. Remember to keep accredited stock separate.
Gazebos:
• Gazebos are welcome to shelter your animals. However, they should not obstruct the view from the Commentary boxes and MUST be erected over animal pens only and NOT cause obstruction by extending into walkways.
LIVESTOCK RULES & BY-LAWS
DOGS

• Exhibitors are responsible for the correctness of their entries, which must be lodged with the Entries Secretary on or before the dates fixed and published. No entry will be accepted unless accompanied by the appropriate fees. The Society cannot be held responsible for any incorrect information supplied by Exhibitors and reproduced in the catalogue.
• The Society is required to retain a list of registration numbers of all vehicles transporting livestock to/from the show. Please ensure you include this on your entry form(s).
• All exhibits in the Livestock classes must be the bona fide property of the exhibitor and must have been their property and on their premises for at least three months prior to the Show.
• Judges and Stewards have the authority to disqualify any unruly animal from the show if, in their opinion, it is behaving in such a way likely to cause accident and/or injury to other animals, competitors, their associates or any member of the public.
• The Committee reserves the right to refuse any entry and also to accept any entry provisionally.
• The Committee reserves the right to withhold any of the prizes offered: - if in the opinion of the Judges, the exhibits do not possess sufficient merit, or - from any competitor or exhibitor whose entry does not appear in the Catalogue under the appropriate class unless specifically stated otherwise in the Schedule.
• The Committee reserves the right to cancel or amalgamate any class of insufficient entries. Exhibitors will be notified of any cancellation or amalgamation prior to Show Day.
• Any breed Champion from Classes 8-63 and 71-80 not forward in the Interbreed Championships will automatically forfeit the £25.00 Champion award.
• All animals will be considered as being in the sole charge of the exhibitor and every exhibitor shall be responsible for any loss or damage caused by such exhibits.
• The Committee, or officials appointed by them, shall be empowered to disqualify and demand the removal from the Showground of any animal which, in their opinion, is suffering from or infected with a contagious or infectious disease. All entrance fees for such animals shall be forfeited.
• The Society expects all exhibitors to comply with Breed Society rules for showing of animals whilst on the showground.
• The Committee, or officials appointed by them, shall be empowered to disqualify any exhibitor found to be contravening welfare regulations.
• The Society, its Officers and servants, shall not be responsible to any person whatsoever whilst entering, visiting or leaving the Showground, for any damage or loss, however caused to the property of such person, or for any injury, fatal or otherwise, to any such person.
• The Society, its Officers and volunteers shall not be responsible for any accident, damage or loss, however caused, that may occur to any exhibitor or their employee or to any animal, article or property brought into the Showground, or whilst entering, visiting or leaving, or being carried into or out of the said Showground.
• The exhibitor shall be solely responsible for any loss, injury or damage that may be done to, or occasioned by, or arising from any animal, article or property exhibited or brought into the Showground by him/her and he/she shall indemnify and hold harmless the Society from all action, suits, expenses and claims on account of, or in respect of any such damage or injury which may be so caused or occasioned.
• All livestock exhibits must be in place on the Showground not later than 8.30am on the morning of the Show, in the charge of an attendant, who will be required to conform with the Rules and Regulations of the Society or instructions from Stewards. Exhibit may not be removed before 4.30pm.
• No exhibitor shall act as Steward in the class in which they exhibit. No person will be allowed in the Judging Ring except Judges, Officials, authorised Stewards and Competitors.
• The Grand Parade of all Champion, Reserve Champion, first, second and third placed cattle and sheep will take place at an appointed time. All animals present in the Grand Parade will be entered into a raffle to win one of two £100 cash prizes. These will be presented in the Main Ring.
• Any objections must be made in writing to the Show Manager within one hour of the finish of the event, together with a deposit of £25.00 for each objection, which will be forfeited if the objection is considered trivial. Objections will be considered by the Committee, and their decision shall be final.
• The Committee reserves the right to alter the timing of events, but the order of the Schedule will be adhered to as much as possible.
• CHALLENGE CUPS. With the exception of the Perpetual Challenge Cups, all Challenge Cups are to become the property of exhibitors winning them three times in succession or four times in all. All Breed Champions must parade for judging for the Supreme Championship Challenge Cups. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of all prize money and other awards gained by the animal concerned. Winners must undertake to return all Challenge Cups not later than 30 June 2027.
• The decision of the Committee, or anyone appointed by them, in all cases of dispute and on all questions as to the conduct of the Show, shall be absolutely final.
• All prize money will be paid by BACS by 31 August. Please enter your bank details with your entry to enable this method of payment. Officers will not chase for bank details and any prize money not claimed will be treated as a donation to the Society. No prize money or refunds will be paid after 30 September in the year of the Show.
• Exhibitors are required to abide by the Safety Standards listed on page 31.
The organisers of this show have taken reasonable precautions to ensure the health and safety of everyone present. For these measures to be effective, everyone must take all reasonable precautions to avoid and prevent accidents occurring and must obey the instructions of society officials and stewards at all times. Vehicles are not allowed to leave the livestock lorry/car park either before or whilst the grand parade entry and exit is in progress.
