They complained about the political/race division, the limited amenities and infrastructural work. They complained about inadequate jobs, not enough social facilities and economic avenues for growth, among many other things. At age 50, Guyana continues to thrive, regardless of some believing the country has made baby steps since its independence, while others are of the opinion that the country has advanced tremendously — like many other former colonies — Guyana continues to endure.

Its people on the other hand, are to be viewed differently, especially now under new political leadership and a new direction, it is a matter to ponder as to how Guyanese will accept this change. Currently the word

To now enforce certain laws and prevent persons from engaging in illegal activities they have been conducting for several years, may look like the government is creating new laws, while they are just enforcing existing ones. It is however the job of citizens to endure, to ride out the storm. Every Guyanese must speak up and speak out against whatever is affecting them, but at the same time, one must look for the good in every situation. For one thing, a life style review can help. Everyone has the right to live as they please but it would be unwise to ignore your environment. For example, Guyana grows delicious fresh fruits and vegetables but many prefer processed foods, many yearn for name brand clothes from overseas instead of contributing and supporting the local industry. An overview will show that many of the consumer habits of the average Guyanese are not conscious. In essence, as Guyana develops and things seem to be getting worse before it gets better, finding acceptable ways to endure might be the best solution.

THE Mayor and City Council continues to encourage all motorists to use the metered parking system installed in a section of the central business district of Georgetown. It is public knowledge that Council is responsible for a raft of activities, including the construction and maintenance of roads and allied facilities in the nation's capital. An estimate from the City Engineer's Department suggests that the construction of one (1) mile of road cost twelve million dollars ($12m). Metered parking allows citizens to participate in the way the netw ork of roads in the city is financed, ordered and managed. It influences the fluidity of vehicular traffic, the progress, growth and development of the municipality. It is known that, whenever a new technology or medium is introduced in a society it creates a new environment and stimulates various reactions to it. It is clear, too. that individuals tend to see the old way of doing things in the new innovation or technology introduced into the community. This, sometimes.

causes them to miss the importance and utility of the new path created by the medium, and the economic and other values of it to the city. The Council is aware that citizens have gotten use to taking the collectively owned spaces of the city for granted and some feel no obligation to assist the council to manage these spaces. The effects of metered parking in Georgetown include rearranging the way citizens do business, in the city.

AS GUYANA ushered in the celebrations in honour of its Golden Jubilee last year, the country's Mashramani parade was shifted from its usual date on February 23 to May 26. With this change, came the introduction of a different route that would see the revelers moving from the Stabroek Market Square, along Brickdam and into D'Urban Park. Minister within the Ministry of Education, Nicolette Henry, said that the route held historic significance, given that Brickdam is the first street to have been built in Georgetown, and that the revelers would pass by the Independence Arch. While Mashramani has returned to its regular date this year however, the route has not. and the change- though met with concerns from the public- is said to have been a strategic one made by government; one that will allow for greater safety and security for the revelers and onlookers. The new route, which is also shorter, will now make room for a joint parade for both the adults and children, while its points of assembly and culmination will allow for more floats, more revelers and more people. These are the main selling points for Government's decision, and attractive though they are. the question arises as to what the disadvantages are and how or if they will be remedied. For starters, consideration must go into whether there ever was a need for both the children and adult parades to be merged. Many may argue that a separation is necessary in order to give freedom to certain behaviours that are likely to occur among the older age groups, while preserving the behaviours that are still affiliated with the younger ones. Persons have also argued as to whether the children- many of whom fall among the youngest of our student population-be able to endure the enlarged crowd, intense heat and prolonged judging period? A shorter route could also mean less space for vendors and these stakeholders have been among the lot to raise arms in objection to the change. Certainly. D'Urban Park has the space, but as opposed to the placement they have enjoyed for years along the Church StreetATissengenRoad route, the vendors don't seem to like this idea much at all. The minds behind this initiative are of some concern to me since, there is always some agenda hidden behind political status, so one has to sit and think of whether the current system was introduced as a means to an end or just another tactic to continue political corruption. With all that being said. I believe the parking meter system is a great initiative. However, $58.00 per every 15 minutes (vat inclusive) is blatantly harsh and does not support our nation's motto (One People. One Nation. One Destiny). The main task of any

government is to minimise poverty and boost prosperity. Adding another bill to people's monthly expenses is contrary to what I think governance is about. Very often Guyanese people will compare Guyana to 'America' (North America) saying things like: "If them went in America them wouldda had to pay." That is besides the concerns of the people as it relates to the parking meters. What people fail to acknowledge is that 'America' is economically stable and strong. The economic status of Guyana and North America are vastly different and the comparison is simply not fair. There is so much to be taken into consideration if Guyanese are going to compare Guyana to the North America. Guyanese people please stop it. Another way that the government can curb the traffic situation and discipline road users is by introducing the

I think if we take it one day at a time and make some change in high places we will see lasting progress in this nation and our economic trees will flourish. After all, a new route could signify new direction with new opportunities. And with the Government's thrust of the 'Good Life', perhaps "Celebration with dignity, liberty and greater unity" may best be honoured by traversing along a brand new path.

The Ministry of Agriculture is currently engaged with its counterparts in Mexico and Brazil to acquire elite planting materials to sustain the growth in the local industry. Coconut and coconut based food and by products gained prominence in Guyana during 2016. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute, Dr. Oudho Homenauth, said that coconut is a major non-traditional export crop which brought in approximately $5M US in revenue over the past five years. Dr. Homenauth said one way to grow the industry is through the acquisition of coconut planting materials in its tissue form. He said the tissues will go through a series of laboratory tests before they are transferred to the nursery for actual

The introduction of these meters has been met with staunch resistance from drivers, who are refusing to park on the streets. On Tuesday, when it was believed the meters were introduced, streets around Georgetown, where payment is needed for parking, were visibly clear.

It also has authority to prosecute persons for offences such as assault, disorderly behaviour, urinating in public places, using indecent language, encumbering the pavements and so forth. The department also provides security for municipal markets, day-care centres, koker pumps and City Hall buildings, among others. Providing security alone takes up much of the department's resources. Foo had once told the Chronicle. The Enforcement Unit, which deals with itinerant vending and other breaches of the laws, is also very small and short of its full complement of staff.

I If or should I say when President Donald Trump's Tax Plan hecomes law, the rules for individual taxpayers will change dramatically next year. Of course, the details could be tweeted umpteen times, before any changes would take effect. But if they do, the adjustments will be the outcry of the nation. His tax plan will have a more devastating effect than the recent Executive Order on immigration. The biggest change with the Trump plan would be a reduction in the top tax bracket, from 39.6 percent to 33 percent — a 6.6-point tax cut. Here are some of Tramp's tax visions. • Reduce taxes across-the-board, especially for working and middle-income Americans who will receive a massive tax reduction. • Ensure the rich will pay their fair share, but no one will pay so much that it destroys jobs or undermines the ability to compete. • Eliminate special interest loopholes, make the business tax rate more competitive to keep jobs in America, create new opportunities and revitalize our economy. • Reduce the cost of childcare by allowing families to fully deduct the average cost of childcare from their taxes, including stay-at-home parents. Some taxpayers' situations will remain unchanged. For instance, if you are already at the 33-percent bracket, barring any other changes to underlying factors in calculation such as the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT), you will pay the same tax under Trump's plan as you do now. • Despite increased taxes for some taxpayers, the Trump plan would reduce taxes, on average, leaving at least 0.8 per-

MONEY garnered from the Kara Kara toll booth that kicked into operation last October has been of assistance to the Linden Mayor and Town Council, according to Mayor Carwyn Holland, but he continues to be concerned about alleged theft and will be moving soon to install Closed Circuit Television cameras to catch the culprits. Though an estimated figure was not given, Holland posited that the Council has been benefiting from the funds, as since then the Council has progressed in several ways ~ the most noted is the increase in workers' salaries by 15%. Holland however is contending that more could be done and the Council can earn more from the booth, if securi-

He disclosed that some vigilant drivers and employees would have realised that the employees who have been fired, were involved in skulduggery and revealed same to the Council. One employee revealed to this publication that the toll booth employees would charge lumber tracks and heavy-duty machineiy their correct toll, but would give the drivers a fake receipt, while documenting a toll received for a smaller vehicle which would incur a lesser amount. "They would collect money from a track or so. but would write like if a bus or a car and then split up the money." the employee said. The source also claimed that several employees may be working together to "get a draw back."
