Beautification initiatives are improving Guyana’s visual appeal and the overall quality of the environment in Guyana
AS Guyana observed the 200th anniversary of the 1823 Demerara Revolt, President Dr Irfaan Ali said that Guyanese must honour the spirit of those who forged the path to freedom.
The Head of State was at the time speaking at a commemorative ceremony for the bicentennial anniversary of the 1823 revolt.
The history of this significant event, he said is part of Guyana’s history and part of all Guyanese.
“The history of a free and independent Guyana, the sacrifices of those who fell during the revolt contributed to our eventual liberation first from slavers and then from colonial rule,” President Ali said.
As he gave a recap of the events that led to the 1823 Revolt, he said that he wants young people of the country who often congregate at the monument located along Seawall Road to recognise the significance of the revolt.
Dr Ali indicated that the monument must not be misused and abused by the activities that take place around it as it stands as a memorial for those who gave their lives
for freedom. For this reason, such the grounds should be considered hallowed, he added.
Against this backdrop, he indicated that as part of the observance, the indomitable spirit of those who dared to lift the forbidden banner of freedom must be saluted.
He noted that freedom should not be taken for granted and must be zealously guarded from enemies within and outside Guyana’s borders.
To this end, he stated that the protection and preservation of democracy must be a shield to safeguard the nation’s freedom.
“As we commemorate the bicentennial [anniversary] of one of the darkest and bloodiest events in our people's quest for freedom, let us be resolute in ensuring that we strengthen our democracy and our nation's development so that our people's freedom can never in our lifetime or beyond, be ever again threat-
ened,” the Head of State said. He added that the legacy and sacrifice of those who passed can only be protected through the preservation of freedom, which can only occur through a unified approach.
Meanwhile, as several activities were launched as part of the observances, he said that these events might not only serve as a reminder of the revolt but also reignite the spirit of oneness.
Along with the list of activities set to take place over the next year, a commemorative stamp and coin

Luncheon who was 74 years old and last served as presidential adviser passed away on August 2.
He was remembered as a devout public servant, patriot and national icon who was completely committed to the development of the country.
AS members of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) reflected on the life of Dr Roger Luncheon on Friday evening, it was revealed that he spent his life dedicated to the service of the people and stood as a pillar of the political party. This was disclosed by several members of the party at a night of reflection which was held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, where family members and members of the party came together to share
their memories of him.
According to PPP/C General Secretary, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, the late executive member of the party and former presidential secretary had done quite a lot for Guyana and had the capacity and drive to do much more.
However, he said that in the last years of his life, he struggled and many persons stood by his side and helped him manage the difficulties he was facing.
As he reflected on his com-
rade’s life, he indicated that Luncheon had been central to almost everything that has happened under most of the PPP/C governments and has been an important person for the party.
While he noted that the party had to make changes over the years to remain relevant, he said that Luncheon would be proud to see how far the party has come in pushing the bounds and forging ahead.
“We had to make changes, over the years. A party remains relevant if it sticks to its core principles but it constantly re-
freshes itself… and Roger has had a serious role in ensuring that the party kept to its core principles which is respect for people, working class of Guyana in the priority for our party, remaining a multiethnic party,” he said.
These, he said, were the core principles of the party that Luncheon, over the years, helped to preserve.
Added to this, Dr Jagdeo remarked that every minute of his day was spent in service to the people of the country, which is something the PPP/C
Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, has announced that the sale of the Marriott Hotel is “ wrapping up ” and his government already selected the bid of US$90 million , which was tendered by American businessman , Ramy El - Batrawi
“… It ’ s basically to wrap up, you know they’re negotiating with the bid -
der ,” Dr Jagdeo said during a press conference at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC), on Thursday
The Vice-President said that his government has already accepted the highest bid, which is US$90 million; this means El-Batrawi could be the next owner of the Marriott Hotel
Six companies were competing to acquire the
However , only two of them resubmitted their bids, and met the minimum price of US$85 million set by National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL).
Initially, the highest of those six bids then was US$65 million, tendered by El - Batrawi The second highest bid tendered was US $ 55.5 million from local businessman and owner of the Pegasus Hotel, Robert Badal
However, because this did not meet the government’s expectations, both were invited to resubmit their bids to which El-Batrawi’s company X, LLC then submitted the US$90 million bid while the Integrated Group Guyana Inc submitted a US$86.1 million bid
The Guyana Marriott, situated in Kingston, was established in 2015 with a total investment of US$52 million The funding for the project was secured through a combination of public investments and a syndicated loan worth
US $ 27 million , provided by Republic Bank Ltd
The government contributed US $ 30 million to support the venture through NICIL The government initially owned the hotel through the Atlantic Hotel Inc. (AHI).
However , in 2017 , AHI faced challenges meeting its loan obligations, prompting the government to intervene . Consequently , the government assumed control of the loan by acquiring all shares in AHI.

Sase Gunraj has written
Opposition Chief Whip , Christopher Jones , and Trade Unionist Norris Witter, demanding payment of $ 1,250,000 each in court costs following their unsuccessful challenge to the passage of the Natural Resource Fund (NRF) Bill.
Justice Navindra Singh dismissed the challenge on June 19, stating that the absence of the Mace in the National Assembly during the bill’s passage did not make it unconstitutional or unlawful
The court subsequently ordered Jones and Witter to separately pay $250,000 in costs to each of the respondents by July 19, 2023 However , no payment has been made yet.
Gunraj, representing several respondents including the Attorney-General, Minister of Finance, the Speaker, and Clerk of the National Assembly, sent a letter urg-
ing payment within 14 days
Otherwise legal action will be taken
“ The presence of the Mace in the National Assembly is not mandated by the Constitution or the Laws of Guyana and therefore its absence cannot result in the passage of the Bill being unconstitutional or unlawful,”
Justice Singh had said in his ruling
Attorney - General and Minister of Legal Affairs , Anil Nandlall, had previously announced his chambers’ intention to enforce the payment of costs owed by the Opposition as a result of multiple unsuccessful court cases
“ We will now have to enforce these cost orders I now have a pile of them because it’s a series of cases that have been filed by the Opposition.”
Nandlall further stressed that when the court imposes costs as a consequence of the Opposition filing “frivolous
and vexatious” matters, they must be paid
In January 2023, eight opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) were ordered to pay 350,000 each to the State after losing a court case over their suspension To date, the MPs have not paid any monies, the AG pointed out
Some of the other failed court cases span from the Caribbean Court of Justice
(CCJ) elections petition ruling to the most recent judgment delivered by Justice Singh
Further , Chief Justice (CJ) Roxane George had dismissed two court challenges filed by the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R)/A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) aimed at blocking Local Government Elections which were held earlier this
year The Opposition’s chief scrutineer Carol Smith-Joseph had been ordered to pay GECOM costs amounting to $250,000 on or before June 30, 2023
Nandlall indicated that his staff has already begun the process of accumulating the necessary information to initiate the enforcement proceedings
Elaborating on the avail-
able options to enforce the judgments , the Attorney General mentioned several approaches
“The process can seize their personal assets You can go after their movable and immovable assets; you can go to imprison them,” Nandlall explained
He expressed confidence in establishing that the individuals in question possess the means to pay the outstanding amounts.
Additionally , Nandlall suggested the possibility of garnishing their monthly earnings through their employers as another means of collecting the owed sums
Nandlall revealed that his office had previously sent letters of demand to the Opposition members who are now required to pay the costs
With the mounting number of cost orders against them, the Attorney General signalled his intention to swiftly explore these enforcement options
THE term “Dutch Disease”, which refers to the economic phenomenon associated with the currency appreciation of a resource-rich country and the subsequent adverse effects on other sectors, has been the focus of much debate and discussion in Guyana
However, recent statements by Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton and his allies have drawn criticism for their claim that the Dutch Disease is merely “a hoax”.
It is vital to analyse this topic with clarity and factual honesty
Vice - President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo ’ s response to this controversial stance is a resounding call for responsible dialogue and informed policymaking In his public rebuke, he criticised Norton’s attempt to mislead the Guyanese public by labeling the Dutch Disease a “bogeyman” concocted by the current administration to sow fear among citizens This claim, Jagdeo aptly highlighted, stands in stark contradiction
to the Opposition’s prior acknowledgment of the Dutch Disease’s existence
What is most concerning is not the difference in opinion, but rather the motive behind the shift Dr Jagdeo astutely pointed out that the Opposition’s stance seems motivated by a personal agenda rather than a genuine concern for the nation’s economic well-being The credibility of their arguments is further challenged by their lack of experience in complex financial matters, a deficiency that undermines their authority to comment on such crucial issues
The Vice - President emphasised the need for a comprehensive understanding of the complexities of economic management in an evolving global landscape The government’s dedication to avoiding the pitfalls of the Dutch Disease is not unfounded, but is rooted in a prudent fiscal policy that ensures diversified economic growth Dr Jagdeo reiterated that Guyana’s path is different; one that draws lessons
from the experiences of other oil-producing nations to safeguard its economic stability and prosperity
The government’s commitment to steering the country away from single-sector dependency is evident through strategic budget allocations , which prioritise not only infrastructural development, but also social welfare Dr Jagdeo underlined the importance of this balanced approach , where oil revenues are channeled towards building a resilient economy while addressing the immediate needs of the population
In the midst of these deliberations, it’s imperative to recognise that the Dutch Disease isn’t an abstract concept, but rather a tangible economic challenge that many nations have grappled with It would be irresponsible to disregard its potential impacts on Guyana’s economic trajectory An informed debate, based on concrete facts and evidence, is crucial for the nation’s growth and prosperity.
In a democracy, differing viewpoints are essential for a healthy debate that drives progress However, when those viewpoints veer into the territory of misinformation, it becomes a disservice to the nation and its citizens. While the Opposition has a rightful place in scrutinising the government’s policies , this role must be carried out responsibly, grounded in accurate information, and a commitment to the nation’s best interests
In conclusion, the claim that the Dutch Disease is “a hoax” is not only a departure from established economic understanding, but also a reflection of the need for vigilant discourse The Guyanese public deserves accurate information, robust debates, and policymakers who prioritise the nation’s welfare above all else
It is time for informed conversations that lead to informed decisions, enabling the country to navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead
Dear Editor,
WHEN I read Mr. Hamilton’s Green reply to me captioned, “Mr. Yusuf’s banalities are a cover for possible corruptions, mismanagement, and incompetence at GuySuCo,” the first thought that came to mind is: “Look who’s talking.”
I was surprised that Mr Green does not read the Kaieteur News, or it would seem that he only reads his own letters therein
If he had read the Kaieteur News, an independent media as he claimed, dated August 14, captioned, “Green as an Elder should do the honourable thing and apologise to this nation,” a couple of days after his own letter appeared, he would have had no need to refer to the state-owned Guyana Chronicle which he claimed he does not read
The implication is clear and his subtle attack is duly noted as well as his other racial undertones contained in his letter regarding the “massive injustice” to the taxpayers he named
I would also like to quote Ralph Waldo Emerson, who said: “The soul is the perceiver and revealer of truth We know truth when we see it, let skeptic and scoffer say what they choose Foolish people ask you, when you have spoken what they do not wish to hear, “How do you know it is truth, and not an error of your own?” We know truth when we see it, from opinion, as we know when we are awake that we are awake.”
Every Guyanese knows the truth and what Mr Green wants is for us to believe that what the PNC did to our country from 1964 to 1992, when he was an integral part of the government, was an illusion which is spun by the PPP/C to hide the “truth” and that he is now attempting to “unmask” that
“illusion.”
This is not only grossly deceitful but pathetic as well Green is creating his own illusion by attempting to rewrite the sordid past of the PNC Green should explain the bankruptcy of our country, the gross mismanagement and thievery of his government, the “sale” of the nation’s assets to friends and cronies for peanuts, the sugar levy which crippled GuySuCo, the days when putting food on the table was a crime, the massive rigging of the elections and the horrors and sufferings of each and every Guyanese during the PNC’s reign of terror
You were the Vice President and the Prime Minister of this country and an active player in all which I have mentioned and many more atrocities committed on the Guyanese populace. Don’t you think an apology would be the least you could do since the “moving finger writes” and moves on?
Conveniently, Mr Green claimed that he was not a member of the coalition when changes were effected in 2015-2020, but as a “concerned citizen” he felt that “the Granger Administration was trying to correct the historical flaws which characterised the previous management of the sugar industry.”
Mr. Green, may I ask what “historical flaws?” The reality is that his PNC Government imposed the sugar levy on the sugar industry, milked it dry and crippled it The sugar industry was paying the wages and salaries of the same taxpayers he claimed but was blind to the “massive injustice” done at that time
Moreover, the coalition spent millions to conduct a Commission of Inquiry into GuySuCo and Mr Green should read the recommendations stated therein This report was submitted in October 2015 by
Professor Clive Thomas, but space does not permit me to elaborate further
But there was to be no closure and there was a plan to make the sugar industry viable It must be recalled that this same gentleman was the Chairman of GuySuCo’s Board
Subsequently, the coalition submitted a White Paper which “downsized” and “right sized” the sugar industry and crippled it
It was a master plan to commence the closure of the entire industry, since there was little or no capital investment and billions just dissipated as I had written in my previous letters
Mr Green questioned the decline of sugar production from 88,868 tonnes in 2020 to 47,000 tonnes in 2022, and claimed that this was due to “poor management, incompetence and likely corruption.”
The hard truth is that there was little or no capital investment and thousands of hectares of cultivation were abandoned; factories and infrastructures were falling apart which this government is trying to resuscitate ; there was the flood in 2021 which decimated the cultivation, and then the closure of four sugar estates
Mr Green should also be cognisant of the havoc the weather pattern can cause to the industry.
The CoI provided the plan to make GuySuCo viable but was intentionally ignored The coalition wanted revenge on the sugar workers In 2014, Mr Green, the industry produced over 216,000 tonnes sugar with the four closed estates producing 117,651 tonnes (Skeldon 35,890, Rose Hall 31,931, Enmore 30,932 and Wales 18,898).
Regarding the Skeldon Estate, the coalition deliberately allowed it to deteriorate to justify closure The Kaieteur News reported in November 1, 2015, that the Chairman of
the Board of GuySuCo said: “I am pleased with the way the Skeldon factory seems to be improving And I know that it can do more But this is a good sign for the industry.”
Then the Corporation’s 2015 Annual Report, at page 12, stated that, “Skeldon’s sugar production of 39,158 tonnes surpassed 2014’s actual and is now the highest production since the new factory was commissioned in 2009 The factory performance has improved considerably (15 per cent improvement in the sugar recoveries).”
This is no illusion, Mr Green What “historical flaws?” The coalition ensured the demise of Skeldon to use it as a weapon against the PPP/C Government
The coalition’s Prime Minister in November 2015 had said at the National Cane Farmers conference that, “there should be no discussion or debate regarding the importance of the sugar industry to Guyana’s economy in fact, we have said this on a number of occasions, that this government sees sugar as too big to fail it has been our position in opposition, and this continues to be our position as government The industry and workers remain important to us, and we are working to ensure that we have a modern industry.”
But this was just empty rhetoric and in the heat of the 2015 election campaign, his comrade Mr Ramjattan made similar utterings This is what a lie is and this is no illusion They ensured the fall of the sugar industry
In conclusion, I could go on ad infinitum, but all Guyanese know the truth because they know they are awake when they are awake.
Yours sincerely, Haseef Yusuf
MR. CHRIS PERSAUD is the brother of the editor of the Stabroek News.
I never met the gentleman Never saw him I know absolutely nothing about Mr Chris Persaud. But I assume as a rich man who runs a successful hardware business, he must know what is Google and how to use Google
As a businessman, Mr Persaud has to use Google Using Google has become commonsense in today’s world Mr Persaud has reacted to one of my columns His attitude was carried in a letter in Stabroek News of August 16, 2023 titled: “For historical accuracy.”
I quote from his publication: “Correction to Frederick Kissoon’s Column on August 9, 2023, in Guyana Chronicle Mr Kissoon stated that Khemraj Ramjattan was the Chairperson of the Gandhi Youth Organization, please note this is incorrect Mr Khemraj Ramjattan was once President of the Gandhi Youth Cricket Club which operates separately from the temple (parent body) normally referred to as the Gandhi Youth Organization or the Mahatma Gandhi Organization However, Khemraj Ramjattan’s uncle Naubat Ramjattan once served as President of the Gandhi Youth Organization.”
If Mr Persaud had used Google he would have seen that Mr Khemraj Ramjattan was elected President of the GYO in April 2008 at the GYO’s annual meeting Elected as Mr Ramjattan’s deputy was Mr Michael Goolsarran Now where did I get this information from? The very newspaper that carried Mr Persaud ’ s missive that sought to correct me The date is April 7, 2008
Now here is the interesting part Mr Persaud signed his correspondence indicating his status at GYO – former senior Vice –President So, if he did not want to use Google, couldn’t Persaud call one of his past colleagues and inquire if Ramjattan was ever president of GYO?
But there is more strangeness about how the mind of Mr Persaud works
Apparently he did his research and found out that Ramjattan’s uncle once served as President of GYO
This causes one to question how Mr Persaud goes about pursuing research
He knows Ramjattan’s uncle was once GYO ’ s president but not Ramjattan himself What do you make of what Mr Persaud did? Before we answer that; one thing is absolutely clear Mr Persaud who set about to achieve historical accuracy as boldly stated in his headline, ended up planting historical inaccuracy
So what do you make of what Mr Persaud did ? I can only think of one thing Mr Persaud simply wanted to say something about me I have been in the public eye decades now I know what comes with the territory I can tell Red Thread that they are chasing publicity by claiming twice they have been threatened
I have been threatened literally dozens and dozens of times in my public, political life Never once have I alerted the public to even one action You just know that there are clowns, jokers and wasted minds out there and you just don’t bother with them So, I know what comes with the territory
You have to expect these things But Mr Persaud’s letter on me, seeking to correct me, is odd and maybe irrational He read a column of mine and just decided that Kissoon is wrong Just like that! What went through his mind to say Kissoon is wrong and I will correct him?
It is now obvious from the April 7, 2008, publication of the Stabroek News that I was right and Persaud is wrong
No hard feelings on my part I thank Mr Persaud for reading my columns I hope he continues to do so I would welcome his thoughts on the myriad things that I write that interest him both as a Guyanese and a Hindu
As a Hindu, I don’t know how he feels about Prime Minister Modi of India I believe Modi has gone in an authoritarian direction which I feel India will reject I believe Modi has subterranean anti-Muslim feelings
I never liked Modi after I read what he did when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat. Reports are, he let those Hindu rioters massacre large numbers of Muslims before he called in the security forces What do you say to that Mr Persaud?
Feel free to criticise me but do it with logic, rationality and research.

THE first two matches in this year’s 2023 Republic
Bank /Caribbean Premier League tournament, is indeed a revelation. Further, it is clear that the batsmen are enjoying themselves on the slow pitches and poor fielding.
In the first match, Brandon King, the new captain of the Jamaica Tallawahs, benefitted from drop catches and poor fielding to score a half century, enabling his team to win their first match against the first-round host team, St Lucia Kings
Jamaica Tallawahs was able to score a challeng -
ing 187 off their allotted 20 overs However , the host team wobbled at the beginning of their chase, as they were quickly reduced to 104 for five wickets
The Kings was able to put up a useful resistance, as Chase hammered a surprising half century Eventually the St Lucia Kings lost the match by 11 runs
In the second match, St Lucia Kings took first strike and enjoyed a quick and solid half-century start
Their foreign players Faf du Plessis and Sean Williams with scores of 46 and 47 respectfully enabled the home team to reach a winning total of 201 runs. Chasing a fright-
ening total of over 200 runs, the Tallawahs were in serious trouble in the very first over when they lost two wickets
The defending champion’s poor batting was indeed very worrying, as they were reeling on 89 for eight wickets However, a useful piece of hitting by Nyeem Young enabled them to reach 147 runs
It is clear that some of the players in this tournament are selected only on the basis of friends and nepotism Rahkeem Cornwall was a total disaster in the Barbados team The movement of the defending Captain Rovman Powell from the Jamaica Tallawahs to the Barbados
The Royals team includes experienced players such as Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers who are former captains of the team The quality of cricket is far below standard
The Republic Bank /Caribbean Premier League must produce young players and provide the West Indies with players who must be vying for selection at the highest level
The fitness of the players is most distressing Some of them are not only overweight, but they cannot move
between the wickets and their movement on the field is allowing easy second runs
All eyes will be on our team , the Guyana Amazon Warriors Skipper Imran
Tahir is a friendly person
However , all eyes will be on the master batsman and electrifying fielder, Shimron Hetmyer
His place in the team will be manifolds This genuine cricketer must lead by example He is capable of scoring runs and playing winning innings However, he must be consistent The Guyana team
will also be looking at Shai Hope to get runs consistently
The genuine all - rounders in the team are match winners with the bat The bowling looks very good on paper Dwaine Pretorius will be our strike bowler Odean Smith , Romario Shepherd and Keemo Paul must bowl a good line and length While Gudakesh Motie and the skipper can receive support form Kevin Sinclair
The Guyanese crowd are over anxious and waiting to rally behind the Warriors
ALTHOUGH the Caribbean Community ( CARICOM) has made significant progress in achieving its food production goals, much more investments would be required for the region to meet its ambitious 2025 targets
That was according to Agriculture Minister , Zulfikar Mustapha, during his address at the launch of the third regional Agri-Investment Forum and Expo at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre at Liliendaal , Georgetown, on Friday
This year ’ s expo will be held under the theme
“ Accelerating Investment in Vision 25 by 2025,” and Mustapha , who chairs the special ministerial task force for food production and food security at CARICOM, said that this year’s agenda will see officials from both the government and private technologies intensify the region’s efforts to reduce its food-import bill by 25 per cent in the next two years
“It is the expectation that
together we will explore innovative financing models , harness cutting - edge technologies and amplify the impact of our collective efforts to propel us forward,”
Mustapha said during his address
He related that some US $ 7.5 billion in investments is needed for the region to achieve its goals
“Agri Investment Forum and Expo 2023 will provide a platform to deliberate, discuss, strategise and measure the outcome of our progress since the establishment of the ministerial task force to drive food production and reduce the food-import bill in CARICOM ,” Mustapha said
Prime Minister , Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, acknowledged the efforts thus far to address the region’s food security needs
“The actions of the regional leaders have sent a very clear message,” Prime Minister Phillips said adding: “Transforming the agrifood system of the region will take the effort of each and every stakeholder in
our region This goal is not merely a financial consideration . By nurturing our regional agriculture sector, we empower our economies, strengthen our food security, promote sustainable practices, and preserve our cultural heritage.”
Continued collaborations, he said, will be pursued at this year ’ s forum to strengthen international trade and domestic self-sufficiency for the region
Meanwhile , Minister Mustapha said: “There must be increased bilateral co-operation between countries; there must be increased public-private partnerships, and there must be an enabling environment for large-scale investments.”
According to the minister , several international organisations have already signalled their interest to participate in this year ’ s forum
“ We will discuss vital topics, ensuring that our actions are not only impactful today but also sustainable for generations to come ,” Mustapha said
Further, acknowledging the need for more investments, the Chairman of the Private Sector Commission, Komal Singh, said that key players will now have to establish concrete logistic approaches to address the remaining gaps in the region
Singh said : “ It is critical at this point in time that the private sector take the initiative to work on a more aggressive regional logistics approach , where we can move our products and services easily around

the region.”
He drew attention to the remaining non-tariff barriers that restrict trade in some nations across the region
“We must also not neglect the opportunity to address the regional trade barriers which currently cause limitations to market growth,” Singh said
At the 33rd Inter - Ses -
sional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM held in Belize back in 2022 , it was announced that Guyana would host the region’s first agriculture Regional Agri-Investment Forum and Expo The second was held in Trinidad & Tobago later that same year

Bill was hailed as one that is modern and comparable to laws in other countries across the world, according to Vice - President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo
The VP addressed the issue on Thursday during his press conference, where he added that the opposition APNU+AFC had ample time to suggest amendments to the bill while it was in its draft stage
He was at the time responding to questions asked about opposition Member of Parliament, David Patterson’s proposed amendments which were published in some daily newspapers
In his response , he explained that the government is a progressive one that made a promise to modernise the country’s petroleum laws and expand it and they have stuck to that promise
“Patterson did some halfbaked amendments and then he gets all the publicity as though he’s the conscience of the oil and gas industry,” he said.
Against this backdrop, he added that the same persons who made a mess of the oil
Dr Bharrat Jagdeo (Japheth Savory photo)and gas sector like Patterson and former natural resources minister, Raphael Trotman, have now become “stars” in the sector
Meanwhile , Dr Jagdeo revealed that Patterson approached the National Assembly the night before the bill was brought to the house to be passed and sprung their amendments
The VP said : “ He had all the time before to submit these amendments So, they had the public consultation, he wants to do it in Parliament, it goes the same way They want to manage the
oil and gas sector from the Parliament.”
Further , he went on to rubbish the half - baked amendments which he noted some of the news entities have gotten excited about.
“We passed a new law Now we have a modern framework for managing the oil and gas sector The law is comparable to laws around the world, modern laws and in most countries the authority rests with the minister In most countries it’s a comparable law that is modern, not 1986 law,” he said
The Vice-President added that while the government is not looking for a pat on the back, it should be commended for modernising the legislation in the rapidly growing sector and elevating it to something that will change the industry
Just last week, the National Assembly passed the landmark Petroleum Activities Bill 2023 which repeals and replaces the outdated Petroleum Exploration and Production Act of 1986 thus positioning the country on the path towards responsible, accountable and modern management of the petroleum industry.

JUST over a month after his visit to the communities of Enterprise and Foulis on the East Bank of Demerara, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, accompanied by the Minister of Legal Affairs, and Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, and the Minister Within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, delivered on their commitment to rebuilding the dilapidated roads so that residents can have better access to and from their homes.
The goal, according to Deodat Indar in an interview with the Guyana Chronicle, is to visit all communities throughout the country and hear from the residents to determine their specific requirements. According to Minister Indar, “yes, we are doing the general work, but we are also listening to the people who live in these communities. We are taking the government to the people, and they are telling us what is bothering them or what they need to benefit their lives as a village.”
He further stated that “most of these visits are impromptu by our Vice President (Bharrat Jagdeo). We visited Enterprise and Foulis, and we listened to
the residents’ concerns; some had some personal issues that we addressed on the spot, while we are following up with some others. Of course, we saw and heard about the roads, and Dr. Jagdeo made a commitment that they would be fixed, and they were. These two communities are not the only ones, but we are fixing the infrastructure of all communities across Guyana. As a government, we are working to develop people’s lives in every way.” This publication reached out to some of the residents of the two communities, who ex-
pressed their gratitude to Vice President Jagdeo, Minister Indar, and Attorney General Anil Nandlall for their “swift” and almost immediate action.
Ms. Samantha Sheopra -
cannot do it alone, but we can help them. I would love to see all the communities look and feel the way Enterprise does. It’s refreshing; we are thankful and want the same for other
well,” she related.
A labourer, Patrick (only name given), said that he and the community were “very happy” and “upbeat” about getting the new roads in the village of Foulis. According to Paul, “Listen, let us don’t fool ourselves, we know with the opposition, no one was getting anything from them. Not even the people who voted for them weren’t getting
anything, so yes, we are happy. We are very happy that, rain or sun, we can walk now without getting our shoes muddy or our clothes dirty. Young, old, and in between are happy; we thank President Ali and Dr. Jagdeo. The big man said he would give us the road and clean the trench, and he did it. The new roads have people cleaning the roadside and surroundings too.”
shad, from the community of Enterprise, said, “I am speaking on behalf of all the residents of Enterprise when I say we are grateful for what this government has done for our community. After Dr. Jagdeo’s visit, everyone was happy to know that we would finally get better roads. The main road leading to the school, clinic, and our homes had been in a terrible state for over 20 years. Like many others, I grew up walking on the roads with potholes, but now that we are in a position as a country to develop our infrastructure, I know that all communities will benefit in this country.”
Sheoprashad further added, “these roads are contributing to the development of people’s lives, and looking around at the streets in the village, many are saying that it seems like we are living in Florida. The children can now safely walk the roads without fearing that they may fall. As a community and as a people, I would like to encourage all Guyanese to let us work together to develop ourselves and help develop our country. The government
villages too.”
Finally, Samantha also thanked the government for the work that was done at Enterprise Primary School. “They did some work on the building of the school, and we would like to say thanks for that as

Seeram, during an award ceremony for the scholarship awardees, said that the Government of Guyana is proud that the two countries have maintained a strong and long-standing partnership over the past decades , particularly in the public and education sectors
In subsequent remarks to the Guyana Chronicle, she said: “We at the Ministry of Public Service and the government are proud of the students that will be representing us as a country, and not just themselves and their families Apart from their parents and family, we are always in contact with them to ensure that they are transiting okay, and we are also there to assist them in whatever way that we can We also
cater for them in the case of an emergency, and they have to return home; we will guide them and get them here.”
Seeram added that the Government of Guyana is also providing them with a monthly allowance to assist with their daily expenses
According to her, the objective is to assist students with their studies so
that they can become qualified internationally and be able to return to Guyana to make a difference and fill the “existing gaps” in the public sector
“ Like I told the students , this is not only a financial commitment but also a privilege for them I would also like to remind them to be good ambassadors for Guyana, knowing that all eyes are
on our country now This is your chance to tell people and show them who we are as Guyanese, through our culture and values ,” Seeram said
Also speaking at the ceremony was the Chinese Ambassador to Guyana , Guo Haiyan , who congratulated the students and wished them well during their time in China
Ambassador Haiyan explained that every year the Chinese Embassy gets the opportunity to give scholarships to deserving students who wish to further their studies in China.
“This year we are giving nine students scholarships congratulations to the winners of the scholarships , and I welcome you to China You should be proud of yourself, and I would like to also thank the Ministry of Public Service and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their support in the scholarship programme.”
Ambassador Haiyan also stated that the Chinese Government values the importance of education
“ Education is the foundation of national development...we should always give strategic priority to education...” she said before mentioning that during President
Dr Irfaan Ali ’ s recent visit to China , he and the Chinese Government had said in a joint statement that they would work together to expand cultural and educational co-operation between the two countries
One of the recipients is Region Two resident Ansel Campbell.
He expressed how ecstatic and humbled he was when he learnt that he was one of the chosen students.
“ I am very lucky to be chosen There were a number of us who applied, but only a few of us got through I would like to thank the Government of Guyana and the Chinese Government for giving us this opportunity to accomplish my goal of studying civil engineering,” he said.
Being the first in his family to be given the opportunity to study abroad, Campbell said that his relatives are very proud of him, and words cannot express how grateful they are for the opportunity he has been given
According to Campbell, their respective programmes will commence with the study of the Chinese language for a year This will be followed by four years of study in pur-
suit of their degree
Meanwhile, Shameeza Baksh told this publication that she and her family are very grateful for the opportunity that has been provided by the two governments
Baksh , a resident of Region Four said : “ This opportunity is very important to me because the degree that I am going for isn’t being offered in Guyana This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me I am studying veterinary medicine, and it is something that I’ve wanted for a really long time.”
Baksh used the opportunity to encourage young people, especially girls, to set goals and not be afraid to accomplish them
“ I am following my dreams to a different country , and I would like to encourage and say to my peers to be smart , take precautions, and find out about the place or country that you are going to before you get there Do not limit yourself ; we have such a broad horizon ahead , and gone are the days when girls are limited,” she added
China has awarded 222 scholarships to Guyanese students since the two governments signed the cultural pact in 1984
LOCAL company, GAICO has partnered with FERSAN, a leading company in the
agro-industrial sector in the Dominican Republic, to develop a US$12 million fertiliser blending plant in Guyana, on the West Bank of Demerara.
The two companies, last week, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to
region. The horizon is bright, and this plant stands as a symbol of progress, partnership, and promise for all of Guyana and our Caribbean neighbours,” she added.
Once completed, it will bolster Guyana's expertise in this do -
this effect during bilateral discussions in the Dominican Republic.
“We are on the cusp of a transformative era not just for Guyana, but for the entire Caribbean. The establishment of this state-of-the-art fertiliser blending plant is not merely a testament to our commitment to innovation, but also a beacon of hope for our agricultural future,” Director of GAICO, Chandini Singh said.
The project promises to not only enhance Guyana’s agricultural sector, but to also introduce a more scientific and reliable approach to farming.
“It's an initiative that will drive scientific advancements in farming, boost our nation's agricultural prowess, and position Guyana as a leader in sustainable agriculture within the
main, equipping the country’s workforce with incredibly valuable skills. It also positions the nation to capitalise on export opportunities within the agricultural sector.
The state-of-theart project is slated to be operational by late 2024. It aims to amplify productivity per acre for farmers, and will be a linchpin in the ongoing transformation observed along the West Bank of Demerara.
The plant will be in close proximity to the upcoming gas-to-energy power plant.
Representatives of the company also met with Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfaan Ali and committed to working with the country to improve the agriculture sector through scientific fertilisation.

Answers in tomorrow’s issue
(ESPNCRICINFO) - Rain had the final say but not before adding to a dramatic finish in Malahide, where India got over the line with a two-run win over Ireland.
Craig Young's back-toback wickets moments before rain had stopped play loosened India's grip, but, in the end, the powerplay hits from India's openers
and the bowling effort, led by Jasprit Bumrah on his return, proved just enough for the No.1 T20I side to finish ahead of Ireland.
Bumrah's double-wicket blow in the first over put India ahead for most of the game, but Ireland's lower order, led by Barry McCarthy and Curtis Campher, resisted the early collapse. From 59 for 6, they helped drag
Ireland to 139 for 7. McCarthy made a career-best unbeaten 51 off 33 balls while Campher contributed 39 off 33 balls.
The tense finish
There was always a sense that rain could be a factor in the game, but despite a drizzle through the afternoon, the umpires didn't stop play until it became heavier. When five overs of India's chase were completed, a result was guaranteed.
At that stage, India were favourites with both Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal finding their groove after a sedate start to the chase. They had finished the powerplay with a six apiece in the last two overs of that phase, lifting India to 45 for 0 in six overs.
Young then had Jaiswal caught at midwicket on 24 with a short ball. The chase tightened when Young had Tilak Varma gloving down the leg side to the wicket-keeper for a duck. At that point, India were only three runs ahead of the DLS par score, and another dismissal would've put Ireland ahead in the game.
Sanju Samson, though, survived the hat-trick ball and guided a single to backward point. Ruturaj defended the next delivery before rain ended the game.
McCarthy's new high McCarthy had scored just fifty - and one centuryin his career before Friday. He came in to bat 59 for 6 and scored four fours and as many sixes. He had the solid Campher for company, but both batters found it tough to score off of spinners, Ravi Bishnoi and Washington Sundar, early on. However, when Bishnoi bowled one googly too many, McCarthy hit the game's first six by hammering one over long-on, and from thereon, both batters scored the occasional boundary to push the team's total.
Though Campher ruined Bumrah's spell with a four and six off consecutive balls in the 16th over, it was McCarthy who was causing more damage consistently. He gave debutant Prasidh Krishna a teaser of his power when he pulled him for four in the 15th over, and
then he crunched two fours and a six off him in the 17th. The bowlers tried to vary their pace against both McCarthy and Campher and though they were successful to some extent, both batters gave Ireland late impetus.
An Arshdeep Singh yorker eventually ended Campher's stay and suggested that India would finish the bowling innings strong, but it wasn't to be. McCarthy tore into Arshdeep in the 20th over with a four and two sixes - including one off a free-hit - to give the home fans something to cheer about.
India bowling blows hot and cold
Bumrah, India's captain for the series, started the day on the right note by winning the toss. After choosing to bowl, he made the best use of conditions by blazing through the Ireland top order. In his first over, he recovered from a first-ball four to knock Andy Balbirnie over with an inswinger and in the same over he had Lorcan Tucker paddling one behind to wicketkeeper Samson.
Harry Tector then joined Tucker in the dugout following another failed ramp, this time off Prasidh. Bishnoi then struck with his second ball to deceive Paul Stirling with a googly and flatten his stumps. The pair soon added to their tally when Prasidh had George Dockrell hitting a short ball to cover and Bishnoi had Mark Adair adjudged lbw in the 11th over on review.
However, India would've been disappointed at letting the seventh-wicket stand to last for 7.2 overs. Arshdeep changed his pace and often bamboozled McCarthy and Campher, but both batters managed to find the occasional boundary. It wasn't until the 18th over that Campher was dismissed, and by then Ireland were already on course for a respectable total. Campher's 22-run final over off Arshdeep indicated that there were still some concerns for India in the bowling department.
(BBC) - Chris Wood headed home the winner for Nottingham Forest in the 89th minute against Sheffield United for their first Premier League win of the season.
Wood, who had come on as a substitute, flicked
The home form of Nottingham Forest was a huge factor in Steve Cooper's side remaining in the league last season.
It may be key again this time around. A dominant first half showing in front of a raucous crowd should
Paul Heckingbottom's side managed to stay in the game - and responded well after half-time.
United were on the attack as soon as the second half began, with Anel Ahmedhodzic having a shot deflected out for a corner.
a header past United keeper, Wes Foderingham, to send the City Ground crowd wild.
Gustavo Hamer scored a stunner on his Sheffield United debut to give the newly promoted side hope early in the second half.
Hamer, who signed from Coventry City last Friday, struck into the top corner from the edge of the box for his first goal for his new club.
United were significantly improved after going 1-0 down early on and equalized just two minutes and eight seconds after the restart.
Taiwo Awoniyi had opened the scoring for Forest with two minutes and 23 seconds on the clock.
Awoniyi headed home from Serge Aurier's cross to give Forest an early lead.
Home comforts for Forest as Awoniyi proves his worth
have produced more than one goal with Brennan Johnson looking particularly lively on the counter-attack.
Awoniyi's headed goal meant he became only the second Forest player to score in six consecutive league games, following Stan Collymore, who did so in 1995.
But it was the player replacing him who gave Forest the win.
Wood came on in the 83rd minute and scored six minutes later to keep up Forest's fine form at the City Ground. Taking in the end of last season, this was their fourth successive home league win - the first time they have managed that in the top flight since 1996.
Sheffield United unlucky not to draw
Going a goal down after just two minutes certainly wasn't ideal for United but
Another corner followed and was not properly cleared, allowing Hamer to unleash a superb strike from the edge of the area to draw United level.
Benie Traore had a golden opportunity when through on goal but was denied by the glove of Forest keeper Matt Turner.
The American positioned himself well to narrow the angle and stop United going in front in what proved to be a vital moment. Traore went off injured with less than 10 minutes remaining but was a bright spark throughout for the Blades.
Despite conceding late on, United's second-half performance was much improved and gives them something to build on when they host defending champions Manchester City next weekend.
Meten-Meer-Zorg Warriors crushed Zeeburg Sports Club by eight wickets at Zeeburg to take the Odyssey Tours 50-over trophy.
The one-sided final was marred by an incident involving Zeeburg’s and Senior Essequibo Inter-County all-rounder, Malcom Hubbard.
Hubbard, who, with nine runs to win, chose to bowl ‘under arm’ --an illegal delivery -- much to the disappointment of fans in the stands.
Winning the toss, The Warriors asked the host to bat and skittled them out for a paltry 88 in just 21
overs before galloping to victory in 16.1 overs, scoring 90-2.
Mark Jeffers and Vishal Persaud put on 19 for the first wicket before the tournament’s leading wicket-taker and captain, Anil Sookdeo, bowled Persaud (1). Zeeburg never recovered as they struggled to reach a hundred; eventually falling 12 short of a three-figure total.
Zeeburg started the game with 10 players and Jeffers’ 18 was the top score while only Jamal Gomes 16 and George Jeffers 13 reached double figures
Damuka Junior, bowling with good pace and control, grabbed 3-28 from seven overs with support from off-spinner, Ameer Mohamed (3-31) and Jermaine Scott 2-21.
Adrian Hinds, who struck four boundaries in his unfinished 26, and Jamal Hinds who made 20 not out, saw Warriors home with an unbroken 45-run stand.
The Warriors collected a Cheque worth $ 200,000 while Zeeburg took home $50,000
Damuka Junior was Awarded $10,000 and a trophy after being adjudged the Man of the
Match. Warriors’ captain Anil Sookdeo was awarded for being the bowler with the most wickets. West Demerara
police and national batter, Kemol Savory, was named the tournament’s best batter after making two centuries while Re-
naldo Renee, who missed the final, was adjudged the tournament’s best wicket-keeper. (Sean Devers)

Following the battle to find a suitable ground and the challenges clubs in Linden face in preparation for it, the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) will, on Sunday, kick start its senior football tournament dubbed ‘the Road to Elite Championships.’
The tournament is aimed at arriving at
a representative club to play in the Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF) Elite League later this year.
Sunday’s tournament will commence with a double-header at the Wisburg Secondary School ground.
In the opening match which starts at 15.00hrs, Amelia’s Ward Panthers collide with Net Rockers while
at 17.00hrs, the Blueberry Hill United side faces Eagles United.
President of the UDFA, Wainwright Bethune, told Chronicle Sport that this is an unprecedented situation facing the regional organiser GFF Member Association, where the main football playing facility in Linden is not available and other grounds are general -
ly not up to standard.
The Mackenzie Sports Club, where football is normally held, is currently under modernization and is not available.
In light of this, the organisers decided on a four-group round robin format involving three clubs each, with the top club advancing to the semi-finals and then a final.
Two more matches will be played next Friday when Silver Shattas meet Aroiama in game one and Capital FC matches skills with Botafago in the second at the Wisburg Secondary School ground also.
All the matches in the round robin play will have a straight penalty shootout format after regulation play to determine a winner, if a
stalemate result occurs after 90 minutes.
Group A has Hi Stars, Silver Shattas and Aroiama; Group B Eagles United, Coomacka and Blueberry Hill United; Group C comprises Amelia’s Ward, Net Rockers and Topp XX and Group D has Capital FC, Winners Connection and Botafago.
Saint Lucia Kings bounced back from their opening-day defeat to get their tournament underway with a comprehensive 54 run victory over the Barbados Royals in the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
The Kings won the toss and opted to bat first and they filled their boots with a barn-storming innings that saw them post the highest total of the sea-
son thus far with a fantastic 201/6.
Healthy contributions from all members of the batting order negated a brilliant spell of bowling from Jason Holder and ensured the Royals would have to produce something very special to win.
The Royals failed to get going in their reply, losing five wickets in the PowerPlay to all but end the chase but a spirited 48 from Nyeem Young ensured the
Royals added some late respectability to proceedings.
Earlier on, the Kings had posted 201/6, led by a blistering show by the opening pair of Johnson Charles and Faf Du Plessis. The Kings raced to 61 but two wickets in Jason Holder’s first over brought things back. Charles and Shadrack Descarte falling in quick succession to give the Royals something to work with.
However, that joy proved to be short-lived as first Sean Williams and Du Plessis, then Williams and Sikandar Raza made light work of the Royals bowling to put the Kings into a commanding position heading into the final five overs.
But that platform failed to be fully exploited as Qais Ahmad and Jason Holder pulled the momentum back by dismissing Williams and Raza respectively.
Holder was to finish the match with 4/38 adding Roston Chase to his list of scalps but the lack of consistent support elsewhere ensured the Kings were still able to post an imposing total for the Royals to chase.
202 to win was always a tall order for the Royals to chase but the reply was over before it began, following a run out for Rahkeem Cornwall, Matthew Forde was destructor in chief,
removing the Royals top order to leave the innings in trouble at 21/4.
Kyle Mayers briefly threatened to counter attack before Alzarri Joseph had him caught on the third man boundary for 16.
From there the Kings took the game away with wickets falling at regular intervals to dismiss the Royals for 147 to chalk up their first win of the tournament.
